Caregiver Maverick W/ Regressor Rooster.

Summary: An injured Maverick causes Rooster to regress, what happens from that.. well Mav's not sure how to handle it.. — based on this ramble

Warnings: injuries (nothing in detail), hospitals, brief mention of using threats to get into a hospital room 😶 (but again, no details are given!!!), IV and I think that's it!!!

A/N: well this was absolutely devastating to write, 😭👍🏻 I wrote this whilst listening to my topgun playlist an this was originally just gonna be a drabble but I turned it into a full fic by accident lol 😌 I'm a little sorry about the subtle Goose cameo.. 😶 I hope y'all like this tho cos m really quite proud of how this came out!!! (⁠≧⁠▽⁠≦⁠)!!!

Missions went wrong. That's something all the daggers knew, hell every aviator knew it. It was a risk that if you were in the air, you might get hurt or you might not come back, it's something that was accepted as just part of the job. Realistically it could happen to any one of them.. but things like that didn't happen to Maverick, they just didn't. He got shot down? He'd find a way to keep going, so when the mission went to shit and Maverick went down, sure everyone was worried, panicked voices yelled through the radio back and forth on if they'd seen his parachute. But they'd been here before, on the uranium mission no-one had seen his parachute or heard from him.. they assumed he was dead but Rooster had retrieved him.. he was alive and with limited injuries...

But that was a high risk mission.. Maverick couldn't afford to send flares and risk anyone finding his position, finding the dagger squad.. However this was just supposed to just be a training exercise. There was no reason why Maverick shouldn't have sent up flares for his location, unless he couldn't.

The exercise was quickly put to a stop as the daggers flew back to base and a higher ranked member went to check on and retrieve Maverick.

It had been half an hour before the daggers were made aware that Maverick was alive however unconscious and in hospital, despite all of their tough personas they had all been terrified.. Pete looked after them and they hadn't been able to do that for him in that moment..

Cyclone sent the daggers home and said that they'd be updated when and if anything about his condition changed. If looks could kill Cyclone would be gone with the look that Rooster was glaring his way. There wasn't an if in this situation. He had to be okay, he was Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. He was the best.. he was Bradley's Godfather and Rooster be damned if he lost him.

The other daggers relented and went home for the night however Rooster went straight to the hospital. It wasn't long before he'd been allowed into Maverick's hospital room, only a little coaxing and small threats being needed. He sat at Mavericks bedside, tears lining his eyes as he saw the man who helped raise him, his godfather, in hospital.. An IV in his arm.. He looked dead.. that's all Rooster could think as he stared. But he wasn't and that's what he needed to remember, unfortunately that was hard considering the pure stress of the situation and Mav's injury had caused Rooster to regress.

Sitting at Maverick's bedside Rooster subconsciously sucked his thumb, staring at the wall, completely zoned out. He had been so unfocused that he hadn't realised that Maverick's eyes had opened. Maverick gently moved Roo's thumb away from his mouth. "Bradley? It's late.. what are you doing here?" Maverick spoke quietly, making quick work of figuring out what was happening with the younger pilot.

"you okay bud..?" He asked tilting his head before Rooster let out a sob.

"thought I lost you- ..only jus' got you back-! Can't lose you 'gain Mav-" He spluttered out in-between tears.

"Brad- Bradley, Breathe.. You're not going to lose me- ... I'm okay.. it's okay Kid.."

Maverick shuffles on the hospital bed with a small pained grunt making some space. "C'mon up"

Bradley scoffs a little under his breathe.

"you think I'm joking? C'mon."

"there's not enough space" Roo counters.

"nonsense, there's plenty of room" Maverick says, finally convincing a very regressed Rooster to stop going back and forth about it, shifting far more than he really should have to make space for Bradley but he didn't care as the boy rested his head against him, clearly exhausted.

"you been here the whole time Brad?"

"mhmm" a muffled hum can be heard from against him.

"get some sleep Kid.. you must be exhausted and I can't imagine that chair was particularly comfy"

It didn't take long at all for Rooster to settle and close his eyes. "Night Dad" He mumbles as he lets sleep take over.

Mav stayed perfectly still, almost in shock, he didn't know what to do. He knew that Brad was upset and regressed and that he knew Maverick wasn't his dad.. that didn't take away from the fact that it was said though..

Pete gently brushed his fingers through Bradleys hair.

"night kid.." He spoke quietly in return to the sleeping boy, and if in the morning the doctors, the daggers or Cyclone saw the younger Bradshaw practically cuddled against Maverick, dried tear tracks run down Maverick cheeks no-one said anything.. and if Maverick had felt a random ice cold, yet almost comforting squeeze against his shoulder in the night he also didn't say anything.. but he had a feeling..

You know how ice has like, one of the the highest ranks you can get in the navy without being SECNAV by the events of TGM while maverick stayed a captain because he didn’t want to give up flying?

I bet ice felt the same in a way, but he was more attached to the plane he was flying rather than the concept of flying in general

I was doing some research and the last F-14 Tomcat was retired from service in 2006 from VF-213. Now this next bit doesn’t entirely comply with fact, but in the topgun universe VF-213 is Fist of the fleet, ice and sliders canon squadron. (In actual fact fist of the fleet is actually VF-25 but let’s ignore that)

So I hc that ice stayed at Commander (since captains oversee the general command of a ship instead of flying the missions) until the tomcat was retired, had one go on the new f/a-18 superhornet on a flight sim and upon deciding it wasn’t the same as the tomcat, he accepted a promotion to captain the same day. Also if we take into account that it usually takes 20-25 years for an officer to get promoted to captain and safely assume ice joined the navy somewhere around the late 70s early 80s, (flight school = 4years so pilots are immediately an Lt when they join the fleet and say it took ice somewhere between 3-4 years so get selected for topgun after that) it also fits the service timeline for getting promoted to captain.

And then after being promoted to captain, ice just gained promotion after promotion and ended up being promoted to COMPACFLT about 1-2 years before the events of TGM. (I hc ice was only on his first term during tgm and that since HE DOESNT DIE YALL, he would take office a second time to keep all maverick baby daggers out of trouble before becoming SECNAV after that.)

Headcanon that Slider and Ice love how smol pocket sized Maverick is. They do every thing they can to make sure they can always lift him up and plop him on their... hip 😏. So even when they have a full desk job, they are still the fittest of admirals around because y'know. And Maverick gets hot for how they can manhandle him whenever but he likes to give them a challenge sometimes so he gets really good at squiriming out of their hold.

I have my own HC that Slider eventually becomes a commercial airline pilot, but even then…Just six foot something buff ex-navy commercial pilot and his maverick backpack- I mean personal carry on.

Slider is taller than Ice so he’s got more leverage for some more creative ways of carting Maverick around, though Ice still gets his entertainment in.

Maybe a year or so after TOPGUN and they’re bored on a carrier, they figure out they can play helicopter with Maverick because the guy just doesn’t get motion sick. They take turns spinning around whilst holding Maverick by his ankles and for some reason they guy finds it fun. There’s also no gym onboard so after a while the running gets boring and they figure out Mavericks around the same length as a barbell. And whilst he’s no where near the weight any of them lift on the regular, they all have great core because he moves around. It becomes normal to see Maverick sitting cross legged on Slider’s back as he does push ups or for him to be clinging to Merlin’s torso as the RIO does squats. Ice of course is the only one who’s allowed to bench him because of the…hand holds he has to use.

Eventually Maverick gets bored of being the equipment all the time so he decides to start getting his own back. Merlin is his own personal climbing gym, that guy is enormous. But he gets Ice to support his legs as he tries to learn to do near verticals push ups and hand stands.

And when they’re back on shore and all alone, there’s other less innocent ways of making use of their size difference…

you getting your laundry mixed up with bob's while you two are on the navy carrier together, not noticing you have a couple shirts of his until you wear one for pajamas and they're quite large on you. he doesn't realise he's missing some items until he happens to pass by you in the hall and notices you in his clothes but he's too shy to tell you and instead tells phoenix, your roommate. she laughs at the situation and the next day lets you know whose shirt you were wearing. later on, you knock on the door to his shared room and try to give him back his clothes but he just politely declines and stutters out, "i- it's fine you can keep them. i-if you want of course! frankly, i think it looks better on you than me-" and then he realises he's said too much and you chuckle and give him a kiss on the cheek simply thanking him for the shirts and letting him know to meet you for dinner at the cafeteria later.

As soon as the single seat variant of the F-18 became an option, Maverick made the switch. Because no matter what people told him, he still felt guilty about Goose and as much as he enjoyed flying with Merlin, it was a relief to no longer have to worry about another person while flying.

Hiya! Sorry, this is not really a headcanon, or idea for one, or anything like that, but I had this idea and there isn't anyone I know that I could share it with. Feel free to ignore x

Anyways. So I was watching a lot of interviews with Top Gun: Maverick cast and they were asked about a sequel so many times, that I actually went over to god ol' Wikipedia, which said Miles Teller pitched a sequel "referred to as Top Gun: Rooster" and it got me thinking. They should do either a film or TV series, where each film/episode would focus on the life and career of one of the pilots before they were called back to TOPGUN, the film/episode titled 'Top Gun: Phoenix', 'Top Gun: Bob', etc. The next round of films/second season would show their lives after the uranium mission.

Calm and Chaos. They balance each other out, Ice is a calm Caregiver. He has a rough idea of what he's doing and can follow through relatively well with limited issues. Mav is pure chaos, he does not have a plan, he does not want a plan he's completely winging it.

I see Maverick as a flip (specifically regressor in topgun and caregiver in topgun maverick). Whilst I see Ice solely as a caregiver!!!

^ (Personally) Mav is dada (or Baba if he's also regressed) & Ice is Papa or Daddy.

Maverick cannot cook to save his life, he can be trusted to get snacks and maybe like a sandwich or microwave meal but that's about it lol. Ice is fussy with what you eat wanting you to eat well as to keep you healthy and in his words "I love him but let's not put that in your body, yea?" He'd say as he's making pasta or something instead- Realistically I can't see him being great at cooking either but y'know, it's better than Mav's cooking so 😂 (Ice does make brilliant baby bottles tho!!! If you drink warm milk he is a master at getting the temperature just right for you!!!)

Mav would sneak you snacks whilst Ice is making dinner-

When Ice is in charge of cleaning and stuff the house/room is military levels of clean, he is absolutely dedicated. You've finished playing with a toy? If you are old enough then he will prompt you to tidy it up, if you're not he'll do it with you (hand over hand type help). Mav could be the exact same level of clean as Ice if he wanted to.. but he doesn't want to. He likes a little bit of mess, in his opinion he likes that it "makes it looks lived in" and "feels like home". This isn't to say he'd let the space get dirty, however messy is a yes. It's also partially out of spite, he's in charge and he doesn't have to be super military level of clean.

Plane themed everything!!! This was started by Mav as he found it entertaining and Ice encouraged and joined in. paci's, paci clips, toys, blankets.

Slider or Penny would babysit you :3

Ice is the type of caregiver that would dress you super nice when going out whilst Mav would debate (and has) taken you out in pajamas (both you and him wearing them 😌)

Maverick can get a little reckless but he would never put you in serious danger- if you ever got accidentally hurt he'd freak out, especially if it was caused because of something he did or encouraged!!!

The two of them got you a goose stuffie!!!

They love telling you stories!!! Ice prefers traditional story books whilst Mav prefers telling you stories about being in the air. Mav would absolutely tell you stories about Goose and all the trouble the two of them would get into!!! 😭

Mav and Ice would love taking you to the beach, you guys would play volleyball!!! They'd take you together and individually, whenever Mav takes you on his own he normally forgets sunscreen and you pretty much always end up with sunburn because you guys just got too distracted- Ice ends up scolding him constantly for it. (This was based on a conversation I had with @agerefandomrambles 🙏🏻)

They'd babysit Rooster and he'd basically become your big brother!!! <333 (you to get into all sorts of chaos)

They would absolutely spoil you!!!

What do you think about mav actually being super hypercompetent in his every day life? Growing up in foster care forced him to figure out how to make really delicious meals, budget tightly, and be really handy about repairs early on. Whereas slider and ice are not...useless, but def inexperienced. like before they are able to figure it out, mav will swoop in and finish up whatever they are doing or demonstrate his expertise in some way. Not in a on purpose way to make them feel bad but in a hypercompetent way. Also goose and carole are in the same position as slider and ice, but a few years wiser. Bradley has caught on too and doesnt know why his parents wont just ask uncle mav to do it instead of wasting time fucking around trying to figure it out themselves.

I think Maverick is hypercompetent but i think it stems from more than just his childhood (although that would have a big impact) (and if we’re really going further afield, rejection sensitivity could be an influence) I think after his dad died he became financially aware very young. As an adult he simply looks at his water bill and can think of ways to decrease it by what ever % right off the top of his head. He’s also the type of guy to look at something and just…figure it out. Busted oven? Give him a manual and twenty minutes and it’ll be fixed.

It’s not that everyone else is incompetent, but regardless of salary, a dual income household changes things a lot. I HC that Slider’s parents divorced messily when he was in college and got a lot closer with his aunt. He saw the strain a on his parents after they split and how they had to adapt to being on a single income, where as his aunt (and Maverick) have had it down to a fine art for a long time. So that is to say, broken fridge? Get a repair man. They’ve got busy lives and the spare change.

So in the domestic world Maverick is highly competent because he’s been doing this sort of thing for years already. He can sew which Carol loves. But he’s also impatient so he doesn’t like teaching these skills. More often than not, instead of telling Ice that he needs to more the wrench another quarter turn, he just reached over and does it himself.

Later on in life it’s why he ends up with the P-51. To some it’s a massive project where they don’t know where to start, nor does Maverick. He just starts.

Carole’s a bit better than the other boys but feminist and traditional gender roles etc etc. Maverick gets Bradley a mechano set for his eighth birthday and teaches him about moving parts and it sets bradley on the trajectory to be a mechanic for a solid two months.

Ice has a competency kink so he really doesn’t mind when Maverick is like, really good at everything he does. At the end of it all though, there’s still a certain guilt Maverick carries. There’s no root cause, he just feels bad asking for help and is highly uncomfortable when he’s not good at something. And being the best is the exact reason he’s so arsey at TOPGUN. What do you mean “figured out who the best is” it’s obviously him.

So yes, maverick is highly competent for lots of reasons :D

i like to think rooster and phoenix have that same relationship that goose and mav had, where they would call each other pet names, look out for each other, consider each other their sibling, and def be each other's wingman date-wise

like i can totally see rooster just "alright you look good, go get em honey" while fixing nat's fit or hair before she goes to the bar to try and flirt with her crush

or nat tying rooster's tie while they get ready for the navy ball and nat gives him some pointers on how to hit on people while making sure he looks spiffy
