public view and physical facilities of the Andromeda Initiative in MEA: Initiation, Discovery, and Nexus Uprising
Lore compilation on the above, with one additional Andromeda Initiative data point unrelated to either topic that I couldn't find a place for in another post. Canon sources listed in order of most to fewest datapoints. The physical facilities are two locations which are not seen in the game, which is to say, not the Nexus nor Arks.
This post has direct quotes removed from wider context. No plot spoilers, but one humor spoiler (by humor spoiler, I mean it made me lose my shit laughing when I read it) which I've put at the end so you can stop reading if you like.
Unrelated to everything, but Sidera Nyx is not the only child on the Initiative: "every last one of the people still in stasis, every man, woman, and child who had registered with the Andromeda Intiative"
Public view of the Andromeda Initiative
The Initiative airs video recruitment ads across the extranet in 2184; these are made by the Central Nairobi Advertising Agency.
Their first ad, with an initial airdate of January 1st 2184, has a voiceover encouraging exploration, with "stills of ark Hyperion superimposed with shots of the Andromeda Galaxy" and "something inspiring" for the soundtrack which is notably not from Vaenia ("adjust style for local market tastes per extranet IP address").
Another ad airing later in the year (developmental notes are dated June 1st 2184) features a "helmeted figure in body armor" (whom the director would like to be "an actor who looks like Shepard", though they do also wonder, "Will Shepard's estate sue us?") observing an unfamiliar galaxy map:
"The Cluster. That’s our target site. By best estimates there should be more than half a dozen garden worlds in this region which are habitable or readily terraformable. The conditions are right. The suns are in the main sequence. The atmospheric compositions are exactly what we need. What are you waiting for? It's only the unknown."
A commercial for a human news item in late December 2184 calls the Initiative the "pet venture of the eccentric wealthy inventor Jien Garson" as an opening line, and goes on to question whether it's "a thrilling, romantic scientific project" (unclear whether this is a commonly held perspective on top of its own self portrayal), aiming to uncover "graft, corruption, and questionable ethics which threaten your investment, and galactic civilization's future".
The Initiative was subject to "gossip, the media coverage, even threats", and the threats are "Constantly. Mostly just the usual alien-conspiracy kooks. The asari are controlling everyone's mind, the turians are doing this to - somehow - wipe us out in vengeance for the war, the whole thing is a hoax done on an STG-run holovid stage... But a few of the threats have been credible."
Homeward Sol protestors harass a known associate of the Initiative on the basis of a commercial for the above news item.
There's a protest about the rigid selection process, with signs including "the Initiative is rigged" and "free travel for everyone". Though this protest was partially caused by paid agitators, "resentments and anti-Initiative attitudes" were already there to stir.
By contrast, the asari (Thessia) perspective on the Initiative:
"... the Initiative is seen as... A vanity project. A way for a baby spacefaring species to score a few popularity points, in a galaxy that isn't easily impressed. A few asari are going along because it's interesting, and you can always find matriarchs looking for a fulfilling way to end their lives — or maidens in the 'young and idealistic' category. But really, most of the galaxy has better things to do than pay attention to the Initiative. What's newsworthy here [in the Sol system]... isn't, out there."
Physical facilities
Some prelaunch research offices are on Theia Station, an old, "ancient quarian low-orbit [space] station" which is within the Sol System. Facilities include a lab, a small gym on level 5 "supposed to be only for senior staff of the Initiative - science team leads, Pathfinder team members, investors when they visited" which is "not used as often as it should have been", and a "small medbay".
The Initiative also has another office in a skyscraper on Earth in an unnamed city, where Jien Garson has an office up high. (The view of the surrounding skyscrapers shows it's not the tallest building around.) This is publicly known to be the Initiative's, as this is where the protest mentioned above takes place. Also mentioned or seen are a medical center and a rooftop shuttle landing pad, though it's unknown whether these are in the same building.

That first recruitment ad uses basically the voiceover of the 2015 N7 Day "you are that explorer now" video, right down to suggesting that the voiceover should be a "tough-sounding" "woman's voice, alto-sounding":
"We are travelers, constantly moving forward—and looking back. Alone and as one, we have no choice but to try. For our insatiable curiosity. For our fear of what should happen if we don't. You can be that explorer. We will say goodbye, and you will look back one last time—and know that wherever you go, we will be with you."

Kiamaiko slaughterhouse runs on the sweat of young boys, trafficked from Ethiopia. Abdi Youssef is one of them. He came to Kenya when he was 7. He is now 27

It is 4.30am. As the rest of the city drags itself from sleep, Kiamaiko Market in Nairobi is abuzz with activity.
At an open field, business is booming and around 20 trucks are parked. On one side, women with makeshift eateries are busy making tea, chopping vegetables and preparing for the long day.  On the other side, the bleating of goats rents the air. A group of about 20 people cluster the goats into groups under the cover of darkness.  
Behind the veneer of normalcy lurks a little dirty secret: the market, situated around eight kilometres from the capital, runs on the sweat of young boys, aged between seven and 15 years old, trafficked from Ethiopia.
Abdi Youssef is one of them. He came to Kenya when he was seven. He is now 27.
“My uncle brought me to Nairobi when I was seven. He told my parents that he would take me to Kenya to educate me.
I saw how other people who came to Kenya returned to build homes for their parents and I convinced them to let me go. Life here was completely different. My uncle brought me to Kiamaiko and sent me to work at the slaughterhouses.
Every day he would demand the money I made and give me just enough for food. At the end of the month, he would send my parents Sh1,000,” he says.
On average Youssef made Sh1,000 a day and his employer took Sh800 and gave him Sh200 for food and other expenses.
Youssef says he was brought in together with other 10 boys, smuggled in trucks with the goats. The trucks have two compartments; the goats are kept on top, and on the lower compartment, separated by thick sticks, the boys huddled together.
Once they arrived, their job was to receive goats, take them to Kiamaiko Slaughterhouse as early as 3.00am and clean the market for Sh10. As they grew older, they slaughtered goats for Sh20 per head.

Master & Slave
At first, they slept in the same sheds as the goats, with the doors securely locked to keep them from escaping.
Over time, they made enough money to rent rooms where they lived as many as five boys.
Despite this tough life, they don’t want to leave the area at all:  they have become addicted to working in the slaughterhouses.  
 “Life here is difficult. When I was younger, our master used to beat us up if we attempted to hide money from him.
We could hardly afford to buy food or clothes. The masters sodomised some of the boys and beat them up. They had no choice but to bear it,” said Youssef.
He is now married to a Kenyan and does not know any other home other than the market. He rarely ventures out of the area because he does not have papers.
Khamed Negasi was brought into Kiamaiko when he was just 11, lured with the promise of a better life, only to endure untold suffering at the hands of his master.
“One of the traffickers came to our home in Ethiopia and promised me a better life in Kenya. What I found here was completely different. At one point I tried to run away but my master had me arrested and put in jail until I agreed to go back and work for him.
With time, I was able to make my way around and find a new employer. Now I cannot go back home because I have made a life for myself here. I’m now 30 years old and married to a Kenyan girl. We have two children,” he said.
Like Negasi, some survivors learn Swahili and adapt to the lifestyle, and even negotiate and work with new employers on their own terms. Others get into the trafficking business, creating a vicious circle of abuse and exploitation.
Francis Mutuku from the Counter Human Trafficking Trust East Africa says trafficking is rife on all porous border points around Kenya and since 1990, thousands of Ethiopian boys and girls have been trafficked through Moyale Border to Nairobi.  
“It involves a complex web of actors, mainly communities living on both sides of the border, brokers who identify final destinations, transporters, security agencies for protection and the end clients who victims are delivered to.
The problem is more pronounced on the Ethiopian side due to ‘structured’ recruitment, transportation, disposal of victims and the attendant abuse,” he said.
Investigations by The People Daily reveal the travails of the trafficked boys such as Youssef and Negasi. At the slaughterhouses, the boys do backbreaking work: slaughtering animals, cleaning the market and calling out to customers.
Some of them are hardly seven years old and cannot even speak Swahili. Sometimes they herd animals as far as Kasarani in Nairobi.
The slaughterhouse and the human trafficking trade have spawned an economy in the area, where several flats have sprouted. Traffickers use the money from the boys to build houses and later rent them out to older boys who are able to make their way around.
The Trafficking in Persons Report 2019 by the US Department of State states that traffickers often deceive parents living in rural areas in Ethiopia to send their children to major cities to work as domestic workers.
“The trafficker promise families that the children will go to school and receive wages for their work, thereby enabling them to send money home,” it says.
 Kenya, being a source, destination and transit point for victims of human trafficking, is one of the cities many of these young boys come to eke out a living.
Mariam Habiba, the Kenyan-Ethiopian human rights activist, has tried to fight the vice in Kiamaiko for years. 
Her grandmother was one of the women given land in Kiamaiko by President Jomo Kenyatta in 1966 and as an inhabitant, she has witnessed the suffering the boys and girls trafficked from Ethiopia go through. 
Untouchables
The trafficked girls some as young as eight years are often married off to the trafficker or one of his relatives or forced to work as domestic workers. The trucks are also a conduit to bring in bhang from Sheshemani and small arms.
Habiba’s attempts have all failed, as she is often confronted with the harsh reality of a well-connected network of traffickers willing to go to any lengths to bring the boys to Kenya.
In 2012, she tried to trace the trafficking route from Ethiopia, Moyale Isiolo, Nyeri or  Nyanyuki to Nairobi. She boarded one of the trucks carrying the boys, girls and the weapons. 
“The boys were put in trucks with two compartments. The first was carrying sacks of beans while the boys were hidden in the same compartment. They were crying throughout the trip begging to be let out.
Some were unable to breathe because of the heat and when we reached Marsabit, I alerted police at one of the checkpoints. The truck was driven into a police station. To my surprise, I was the one who was arrested and the truck was allowed to proceed,” she said.
Habiba was freed a day later without any charges. In 2009, she alerted police and a major swoop was conducted in Kiamaiko.
A day later, she went to the police station to inquire what would happen to the boys, only to be told they were set free. She claims that their masters walked into the station and “bribed” to get their slaves back.
“I was told the cell did not have enough room to hold the boys and their masters had come for them. They paid a thousand for each and on that day, the police officers made more than Sh200,000,” she claimed. 
Contacted for a comment, Police spokesperson Charles Owino said he could not discuss the issue until they conduct independent investigations. “We will first have to carry out preliminary investigations before I can give you an official statement. Give me some time,” he said.
Kenya is placed at Tier Two in the Trafficking in-person report 2019, which means that although it still does not meet the minimum standards for the elimination of the vice, it has made significant efforts to fight to traffic.
“Traffickers sometimes fraudulently obtained identity documents from complicit officers and police often took bribes to warn traffickers of impending operations and investigations,” the report said. *Names of the victims have been changed to protect the identity of the victims

If the English market is tough for serious players in Indian journalism, keeping the head above the water in the languages is a humongous challenge. So immense, so expensive, and so impossible is the task of attracting readers and viewers, and keeping them engaged with quality content, that nearly nobody is attempting to do it.
The British Broadcasting Corporation is a stand-out exception.
In an arena filled with itsy-bitsy, tits-and-ass, click-bait majors—madly chasing eyeballs with the fake, frothy and frivolous; and conning agencies, advertisers (and themselves) with eye-popping numbers of “uniques”—BBC is an isle of calm. Quietly doing what it does best—journalism—and leaving audiences informed and empowered.
Rupa Jha is head of BBC Languages in India, responsible for content in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi. Her mandate: to enhance the “strength, depth, range and quality” of all BBC multimedia output, words mostly alien to bottomline-obsessed managers, in a mad race to the bottom.

Q: How does BBC as an international broadcaster view the Indian language market?
Rupa Jha: The BBC has been working in Hindi, Tamil, Urdu and Bengali for more than seven decades. It recently decided to expand its portfolio to realise the potential of a wider language market. Hence, the creation of BBC news services in Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati and Marathi.
Obviously, the language market in India is extremely crowded, with more than 900 TV channels, thousands of websites and hundreds of radio stations, but it struck us that there was a place for a brand known for credibility, trust and a world view; a brand that could challenge the status quo and be a strong counterweight to the rising challenge of fake news and the “echo chamber” effect.
The four new languages services were launched in 2017, following a “digital-first” strategy supported by a partner-based TV presence. It was the biggest expansion of the BBC in India, since the 1940s.  We hired around 150 new staff and created a state-of-the-art production hub, making Delhi the second biggest BBC bureau after Nairobi.
The bureau also houses two new, ultra-modern TV studios, giving our new TV programmes a fresh look and presentation that stands out for high production values and distinctive story telling. We also have five satellite offices where small teams shoot, edit and produce local content at the state level.

BBC’s “news needs wheel”
Q: What does the Indian language viewer, listener, surfer look for from BBC’s various language services that she doesn’t get from established legacy players?
Rupa Jha: The regional market is dominated by hyper-local content. So the content strategy of the BBC in this market of languages is to make a differentiated offer and become a trusted window for people to understand the place of India in the world.
Original content is at the centre of this strategy with a special focus on serving underserved audiences such as the young and women.
We aim to drive audience growth by expanding our traditional appeal amongst “news connoisseurs” into a wider group of “news nibblers”.
Our research told us that local players tend to focus their news coverage mainly on the “what” and “when” but there is little effort being made to explain the “why”.  This helped us to develop a model we call our “news needs wheel”.
This showed that audiences wanted the BBC to provide perspective and context, together with stories that educate, inspire and offer solutions. We use this model not only to tell international stories but also to help develop narratives on the local by stepping back and looking at the big picture.
Based on our understanding of “news needs”, our content strategy is to decode national/regional stories for all language audiences and help generate an interest in news that is beyond hyperlocal.

We acknowledge that the BBC in India is not the first port of call for people. Our assumption is that what they do want from us is analysis and explanation of an event.
We have a huge loyal audience in rural India and we ensure that we cater to that segment of society through our editorial agenda. Because of this we have a specific focus on marginalised communities, women, farmers and stories of human rights, development and justice.
A good example is presented by this current election period. We have been running a month of special output called “Reality Check” where the promises made by the political class and those in power is being assessed. We do regular fact-check stories, busting the fake news.
# We have also had special coverage around Muslims in India called “Being Muslim in India” and we cover stories around caste identity regularly.
# We had a season in Marathi called Ambedkar and Me, showcasing stories of successful Dalit entrepreneurs.
# We have featured stories of women from across the country, under the banner “BBCShe”, stories of choices men and women made called “His choice” and “Her choice”.
# We have also committed ourselves to deliver strong contextual coverage of Kashmir—for example, we had a series of stories from the region based around looking at violence through the eyes of children.
# We also have a special focus on tribal issues. Our recent coverage of Pulwama and aftermath is a case in point where we worked hard to ensure neutrality and balance in coverage based on facts.

Q: It used to be said that Indians looked at and listened to BBC for its credibility. Is that still the case after the growth of homegrown media? How do you achieve this? What are the tell-tale signs of a fake story for you?
Rupa Jha: Yes, of course. Credibility is the tag that has helped us grow in the market. We work hard on the training of all our full-time journalists and stringers to ensure they fully understand our editorial guidelines so that they understand the BBC way of reporting. This training is a continuous process and takes up a significant part of our budget.
We also have a very strong system of editorial checks and balances. All our language services cross-check and triangulate their stories, and also liaise with the London headquarters through a central planning desk which also ensures that there is a flow of news that is checked and verified. We have standing instructions not to run stories unless there are two independent sources or if we have our own direct sources.
On top of all the above principles and practices, we fact-check stories daily, mostly viral stories. We have also invested resources in a lot of “on-the-ground, eye-witness reporting” at a time when other Indian media have been reducing the amount they do.

Q: As the head of BBC languages in India, what does your work entail, how many people do you lead, how do you go about spotting and farming out stories, what kind of stories do you like, etc?
Rupa Jha: My job is to coordinate and oversee the whole of the BBC languages operation in India and to be a vital link to BBC HQ in London. I directly manage ten Service Leads and make sure staff across services in Delhi are properly managed, recruited and developed. As head, it is my task to ensure that there is a strong, creative culture across the bureau, that every member of staff understands clearly what we are doing and who we are doing it for.
My aim is to ensure all services provide a distinctive offering to the Indian market, with a focus on original and solutions-based journalism, mobile-first content, social media engagement and a mixture of news and near news content. I also have to make sure we are optimising our content on every platform and in each language.
We leverage our strength in international news to report Indian news with a global context, i.e. stories that will compare Indian issues to those in the rest of the world and global stories that are made relevant to an Indian audience. To attract new audiences to the BBC, the new services address diverse content needs of the youth and female audiences and deliver the quality, independent journalism that is lacking in this market.

Q: There are thousands studying journalism especially in the languages. What would you advise them about the way forward? How can they equip themselves to work for the BBC some day? Can they freelance for you?
Rupa Jha: I feel the language scene in journalism is flourishing. Digital is the way forward, so take the plunge. Whatever format you work in, understand that a good story is a good story. Understanding the eco-system where we operate is vital.
We don’t ONLY look for those who have a degree in journalism. For the BBC that’s not the only consideration because we feel if you are curious and passionate and can tell a good story, you can become a journalist.
It’s a fantastic profession which needs people with courage, imagination and conviction. They can surely freelance for us by sending their CV and work sample to us.

Kenya Arrests at Least 11 Following Hotel Attack
Kenyan authorities have made more arrests in connection with last Tuesday's terrorist attack in Nairobi. Meanwhile, Kenyan officials are vowing to prevent further attacks. Kenya's top security agencies met in the coastal city of Mombasa to discuss ways to improve security and prevent attacks by militant group al-Shabab. The Islamist extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack on the Dusit D2 hotel and office complex that killed at least 21 civilians. Speaking at the conference, Interior Minister Fred Matiangi said Kenyan forces are ready to repulse any attack. "We are alert, and we remain alert 24/7. We are on duty 24/7 to serve our people to ensure that our country remains secure and safe.  And anyone who bets on attempting to disrupting our peace got some answers last week, and they will get many answers if they try as we get along." Kenyan officials say police and army troops killed all five gunmen who attacked the Dusit complex. Since then, authorities have arrested at least 11 people in connection with the attack, including four suspects who surrendered to police Monday in the eastern town of Isiolo. Dozens more have been brought in for questioning. Authorities acknowledge that al-Shabab continues to pose a threat. A sub-county police commander Garissa County, Aaron Ombeo, said security officers stopped a suspected terrorist attack on a construction site. "Unfortunately, as they were attempting to get to the premises they shot at a female. She is stable, she is undergoing treatment at Garissa. Security officers were guarding the facility, they had to respond to the extent the attackers fled to an unknown destination. We are still out there looking for the attackers," said Ombeo. Nairobi based security expert Richard Tuta said al-Shabab is taking advantage of Kenya's political freedoms to operate. He said the country needs to strike a balance between freedom and national security. "The moment you hear a country being an open political system, it is a fact that some aspect of fundamental human rights are so much respected, including but not limited to the fact that [there is] a right to privacy. And the moment there is aspect of privacy, freedom of media, they serve as a conducive enabling environment for the operation of a terrorist organization," he said.
