800 Phone Pod: The Next Gen Meeting Spaces
Companies and their employees must adapt to emerging technologies and new corporate settings as the nature of work rapidly changes. While coworking spaces are becoming the new address for most offices, the most practical response to typical problems in such coworking spaces is a phone booth.
Tumblr media
Enjoy privacy even in open workspaces
Absolute silence is not what we would advocate because it is artificial and undesirable. With the perfect acoustic environment to contain sounds so that those outsides won’t be disturbed, phone pods are an ideal option.  Phone pods are a wonderful addition for both the users and any modern office setting. Acoustic soundproof pods offer a space-saving alternative to conventional construction methods that don’t need a building permit because they are floor-standing.
Phone booths can be used for more than just private calls. In the midst of a busy coworking environment, workspace booths or meeting pods provide members with solitude and isolation to complete various tasks.
Here’s a quick guide on how to choose your private meeting spaces –
While there are a bunch of phone pods and acoustic booths available, what is important is the key features that make the difference.
Ventilation
A ventilation system is necessary for soundproof phone booths. The booth must ensure comfort and a cool temperature despite being used by multiple employees.
Lighting
Choose frontal lighting to brighten members’ faces for the best appearance on video calls. Some booths have skylights, and the majority have a full-length door or at least some glass walls to let in natural light. If visual privacy is not a need, having clear walls on all sides keeps the feeling of uninterrupted open space.
Design
Client conversations can seem more polished and sophisticated with clever, elegant designs. Find a comfortable medium between a booth that stands out on its own and one that blends in with the overall design of your area.
The Next-Gen Meeting Spaces with Phone Pods
Phone pods or silent booths offer plenty of benefits that give you a reason to invest in them for your workplace – providing employee welfare and productivity. Here are some reasons why phone pods are fast becoming the most ideal meeting space
Privacy – In order to provide employees with the seclusion they desire, phone pods are just perfect.  Working in a one-person phone booth can help to keep staff meetings, personal talks, and work-related information discreet.
Noise cancellation – Phone booths are able to peacefully kill with any background noise and chaos, thanks to their acoustic qualities.
Cut distraction – Less distractions are made possible by the confined spaces’ optimization. Whether it is work or it is taking a break, these pods allow for distraction-free spaces.
Increased control – Your staff members could feel as though they are lacking control on their work and concentration when they feel stuck in a noisy workplace. Employees can take a little break and enjoy a quieter environment in phone booths and meeting pods, which gives them a sense of control. As a result, workers are happier, more effective, and more motivated at work.
Ideal spaces for meetings – Yes, these give you the privacy, concentration, and confidentiality required for meetings with clients and colleagues, as against open floor spaces that lack these elements.
800 Phone Pod is a leading manufacturer of phone pods and silent acoustic booths. Make the workplace fun as well as a productive place with phone booths that act as meeting spaces, spots for personal calls, a space to get work done, or even to take breaks for unwinding – just a little me-time! With various sizes, designs, and furnishings, it is easy to amp up your office without the heavy infrastructure construction required in a traditional setup.

New University Campus in Milan building design
Design: CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota
Location: MIND-Milano Innovation District, Milan, Italy
A University Campus, Reimagined
International design and innovation practice CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and a team led by Australian real estate group Lendlease have won the international competition to design the University of Milan’s new science campus. Located in the MIND-Milano Innovation District, a 1-million-square-meter (10 million square feet) innovation park whose masterplan was also developed by CRA, the new campus is set to open in 2025.
The campus will extend over 190,000 square meters (2 million square feet) and will serve approximately 23,000 researchers and students specializing in natural and formal sciences at the University of Milan. The design, developed by CRA in collaboration with architect Italo Rota, revolves around a network of green courtyards, a series of uninterrupted walking paths (“common ground”) at different heights, and five brick buildings. It also features a large central square with an adjacent lake.
The buildings pay tribute to the Ca’ Granda, the 15th-century brick building designed by the Renaissance architect Filarete, which today hosts the central seat of the University of Milan. The facades have been designed with an innovative construction technique, with each brick individually positioned by a robotic arm and treated as a pixel within a large-scale bas-relief. The result will be a three-dimensional tapestry with textual and visual content.
The project’s main typological features – the courtyards and the “common ground” – are also inspired by the Ca’ Granda, which was the closest realization of Filarete’s vision for a utopian city that he called Sforzinda. The “Campus 2.0” reinterprets Filarete’s design principles, albeit with 21st-century digital technologies and new approaches to teaching and learning.
“Recent data analyses of human interaction on academic campuses have shown that there is a direct correlation between the physical proximity of researchers and scientific output,” says Carlo Ratti, founding partner of CRA and director of the Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: “In other words, human interaction is an essential component of the discovery process. The recent pandemic, which forced scholars to live and work for months on end in isolation, only reinforced the importance of physical space. Our ‘Campus 2.0’ design elaborates on Filarete’s thinking from almost 500 years ago to create a testing ground that will promote interaction among diverse communities.”
“Filarete’s utopia is often visualized with the eight-pointed star shape of Sforzinda, his ideal city. However, if you zoom in and take a closer look at the design, you can appreciate other compelling features,” says architect Italo Rota, the project’s creative consultant. “Filarete thought that architecture should focus on durability, simplicity, and affordable technical sophistication.
He wanted his buildings to become the backdrop of a new humanism, blurring the boundaries between private and public spaces. At the new Campus in Milan, we strive to realize Filarete’s utopia, on the very site where six years ago, millions of people from all over the world met for the World Expo.”
One of the project’s defining features is the “Common Ground”, a public space that winds its way across the Campus. This uninterrupted set of walkways and crossings connect the buildings and meanders across courtyards. The “Common Ground” allows people to walk outdoors all year long – under a canopy or portico – over a length of more than 1,200 meters (4,000 feet).
The path continues inside the buildings, with an additional 800 meters (2,700 feet) of accessible walkways at the mezzanine level. The “Common Ground” serves to reinforce the connection between the Campus and the surrounding MIND neighborhood, fostering interaction between the academic community, and the companies and R&D centers that operate in the innovation district.
The campus also features almost 100,000 square meters (1 million square feet) of greenery, including terraces and hypogeum gardens located below the ground level. Each of the five courtyards will showcase a different landscape from Northern Italy, while the central square and lake can accommodate large events.
UNIMI Design – Building Information
The project of the new campus for the science faculties of the University of Milan is located within the MIND-Milan Innovation District in the site where Expo 2015 was held. CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati produced the overall architectural concept for the real estate group Lendlease, and a task force whose member companies include:-
Starching S.r.l. (Architectural Project), Manens-Tifs S.p.A. (Gardening Project), Redesco Progetti S.r.l (Structural Project), Emilio Pizzi Team Architects S.r.l. (Space Planning), Dr. Geol. Pietro Simone (Geological Report). The hyperloop and why you should be a little excited
I needed to make my own post because just leaving a comment on that other post was just burning my buns.
Above is the CNN video of one of the many Hyperloops in production. Korea and Dubai are just two of the other locations working on this technology. As I said before this isn’t just a speed train. It is a speed train 2.0. It uses the technology of the speed train in a vacuum which increases the speed and makes it more dangerous. That’s why development has been slow and people actually travelling in one is big news.
Some companies are looking to put this below ground, but I think above graound would actually be safer. This technology also eliminates the need for airplanes which are damaging the environment.
Here is an article from CNN that gives a good explination of this technology and some of the trouble it may have.
Hyperloop wants to change the world. Not everyone's convinced By Matt McFarland, CNN Business
Hyperloops burst onto the scene in 2013. Elon Musk detailed a new type of train service in a low-pressure tube that would reach speeds up to 760 mph. The train would float on a cushion of air and be powered down the tracks by magnets.
Like many of Musk's endeavors, including electric cars and rockets, it didn't involve inventing everything from scratch. Musk took existing ideas, re-packaged and rethought them, in hopes of carrying humanity towards a brighter future. But critics aren't yet entirely convinced the new hyperloop thinking can solve old issues.Magnetic levitation was already used on high-speed trains in Japan and Germany, and low-pressure pneumatic tubes have been used to move objects since the early 19th century. Combining the two would make higher speeds possible, Musk said. Trips between the county lines of Los Angeles to San Francisco would take 35 minutes, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said. It would be much cheaper and faster than high-speed rail, he said.
Hyperloop is novel and interesting, and at the same time a very old idea," Molly Wright Steenson, a Carnegie Mellon University professor who studies technology, communications and design, told CNN Business. "We still face a lot of the problems we faced in 19th century. We're trying to get people very quickly across time and space, and we still have to contend with traffic."
Pneumatic tubes were popularized in the 1800s, scholars say, as an alternative to ground transportation. Capsules containing letters were pushed and sucked through tubes at speeds of about 20 or 30 mph, generally in tunnels under big cities. Telegraphs were much faster than pneumatic tubes, but the final steps of their deliveries were inefficient and expensive, as telegraphs needed to be hand delivered from telegraph offices to their final destinations. So pneumatic tubes were often used between telegraph offices and key destinations such as stock exchanges, the scholars say.The Paris pneumatic tube system peaked in 1945, with 450 kilometers of tubes and 12 million objects being moved that year, Steenson said. The system shut down in 1984 amid stiff competition from the telephone and fax, she said. US cities generally gave up on pneumatic tubes decades earlier, as the truck emerged for delivery in the early 20th century.Pneumatic tubes generally weren't built outside big cities, or to individual homes, because the cost of doing so wasn't practical, according to Holly Kruse, a Rogers State University professor who has researched pneumatic tubes.
Hyperloop companies won't be the first to try an underground transportation system in a sealed tube. In 1867, the inventor Alfred Ely Beach wanted to build an underground train system in New York City that relied on pneumatic tubes. But he abandoned the system and instead focused on the easier task of moving mail rather than people, because New York politician Boss Tweed opposed the plan according to a paper by former US Postal Service inspector Robert A Cohen.
Musk's talk of a better high-speed train triggered a worldwide race to revolutionize transportation in the 21st century. Hyperloop projects have announced progress in Nevada and Korea this month, including Virgin Hyperloop's first test with actual passengers. (The test did not come close to reaching 760 mph and was run on a 500-meter track.) A Korean research institute reportedly reached speeds over 600mph on a 1/17th-scale model. The institute did not respond to inquiries from CNN Business.
For all the excitement, hyperloops remain an unproven technology that attempts to modernize the idea of marrying trains to pneumatic tubes, and that idea was abandoned long ago for rail travel due to its limitations, among them speed and cost.Roger Goodall, a Loughborough University professor who studies rail, told CNN Business that's he's been surprised at recent investments in hyperloops given drawbacks he sees, including its cost and its ridership capacity."Hyperloop seems to be a step too far," Goodall said.
Contrary to Musk's projections, Goodall views Hyperloop as a more expensive version of magnetic levitation trains, which he said already struggle to prove that they're as affordable as traditional high-speed rail trains. On top of the costs of magnetic levitation, hyperloop companies will also have to pay for an enclosed tube that's keep at low pressure, even though at least one company, Virgin Hyperloop, maintains that operating costs can be kept low.
Hyperloop tracks will also have to be of higher quality than traditional high-speed rail or magnetic levitation, Goodall said, to ensure a smooth ride quality. The faster a train goes the higher quality the tracks needs to be, to ensure imperfections don't lead to a train that shakes, which could make it difficult to work or read on a train.
Virgin Hyperloop declined to comment on how its overall costs of construction and operation compared to traditional high-speed rail and maglev projects, but said it offered cost savings in certain situations, such as tunneling under a busy street and making tight turns. The company said its tunnels are about half the surface area of high-speed rail tunnels, reducing costs. Virgin Hyperloop also expects cost savings as it can meet real-time demand rather than rely on traditional timetables. The company said it won't pay to transport empty seats, as can happen with trains.
And Virgin Hyperloop says that the company will see significant cost savings over traditional rail systems when it comes to building in hilly areas.Virgin Hyperloop will be capable of climbing 10% grades at speeds of 224 mph, which co-founder Josh Giegel described in an email as a more than 6x improvement over high-speed rail."A train would be forced to go around the obstacle, adding kilometers of track to the alignment. Hyperloop could simply go straight over, saving substantial material costs," Giegel said.
Another challenge Goodall sees is how few people Hyperloops will carry. Hyperloops have been described as having smaller train cars than existing trains. With fewer people on board, Goodall said, it could be more challenging to sell enough tickets to cover a system's costs.
But Virgin Hyperloop told CNN Business that its system will carry more passengers per hour per direction than trains because it will bunch its smaller pods into convoys that are separated from each other by microseconds.
Rail projects tend to be done in by financial troubles and a failure to obtain right of way, however, Goodall said. Hyperloops won't be immune from these issues, he said, but they may have an easier time getting funding from politicians, who are drawn to new and exciting technologies.
Regulators appear more welcoming today. This summer Elaine Chao, secretary of the Department of Transportation, announced an emerging technology council to make sure that the department didn't impede the deployment of new technologies such as Hyperloop."We welcome the visionaries, the doers, the stakeholders with solutions to today's transportation problems," Chao said.

Business Leaders Look to Leverage Aitheon Technology
Enabling business to incorporate the use of machine robots, autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles and a wide range of sensors within its solutions is proving to be an attractive offer for many companies. Aitheon executives believe that connecting with the broadest array of devices, from many manufacturers, improves the flexibility and value of the platform and helps drive adoption for the end customer.
Disclosure: This is a Sponsored Article
This idea has caught the attention of the global marketplace. Aitheon founder and CEO Andrew Archer are very pleased with the global interest that the Aitheon platform is attracting. These early and positive signs are good for the confidence of the CEO, who firmly believes that the future of business solutions lies with the complete integration of artificial intelligence with humans and robots working in unison for a common goal.
India
India-based Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited(IL&FS) is one of the world’s leading infrastructure development and finance companies. IL&FS and Aitheon recently met to discuss the implementation of automated systems for a variety of applications. With operations in the USA, Middle East, and Asia, the cooperation looks to be mutually beneficial to all involved. Aitheon and IL&FS will look to jointly service clients with fully automated robotic material handling and storage solutions. This partnership could also allow for businesses running on the platform to be financed by IL&FS. Also in India, Aitheon has entered into agreements with Kaynes Technology for manufacturing services, where Aitheon has co-located its offices.
USA
Aitheon recently met with executives from the Washington D.C. based World Bank, regarding possible uses of the Aitheon token and integration of payments using the AIC cryptocurrency. Leaders at SAP, one of the world’s top suppliers of business software solutions, discussed a possible partnership that would see the two platforms communicating and sharing data. Integrating with established high-profile companies is a modus operandi that is sure to raise the profile of Aitheon in North America.
Profile and awareness raising is very important, particularly at this stage along the roadmap, however, Aitheon also recognizes the importance of partnering with smaller perhaps more dynamic ventures. Their executives also in talks with California based, Next Future Transportation, Inc.Next Future is a pioneering new transportation solution with autonomous transportation pods. The two companies are discussing the integration of Next’s driverless vehicles within the Aitheon platform to leverage the flexibility of human command and control to boost their technology.
Netherlands
Remaining in the technology breakthrough arena, Aitheon is exploring the integration of Decibel.LIVE’s devices on the Aitheon platform. This will make the technology available to Aitheon users and continue to widen the awareness of the Decibel.LIVE’s array of noise-based instruments. Decible.Live has created a cutting-edge noise monitoring program that joins real-time sensor data with blockchain-based smart contracts to produce open, provable results and instant payment direct to impacted parties.
Dubai
The Microsoft Technology Center in Dubai is keen to discuss possible synergies between the Aitheon platform and Microsoft back-office solutions. The Value of Soundproof Pods & Booths:
In today’s fast-paced business world, disruptions can have a significant impact on productivity and focus. Soundproof pods and booths offer a sanctuary within the workplace, providing employees with a quiet space to concentrate, collaborate, and recharge. By minimizing distractions and reducing noise pollution, these innovative solutions contribute to a more conducive work environment, ultimately leading to increased efficiency and higher employee satisfaction.
Improved Productivity:
Numerous studies have demonstrated the correlation between workplace environment and employee productivity. According to research conducted by the University of Sydney, a quiet office environment can lead to a 48% increase in productivity. By investing in soundproof pods and booths, businesses can create the ideal conditions for focused work, leading to tangible improvements in output and performance.
Enhanced Collaboration:
While privacy and focus are essential, so too is collaboration. Soundproof pods and booths strike the perfect balance between solitude and teamwork, providing employees with a space where they can collaborate without disrupting others. Whether it’s a brainstorming session or a confidential meeting, these versatile solutions enable seamless communication and idea sharing, fostering innovation and creativity within the workplace.
Employee Well-being:
Employee well-being is a top priority for businesses seeking to attract and retain top talent. Soundproof pods and booths contribute to a positive work environment by offering employees a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the open office layout. Dedicated space for quiet work or relaxation helps reduce stress levels. It promotes overall mental health, leading to happier, more engaged employees.
Understanding the Financial Benefits:
The upfront cost of investing in soundproof pods and booths may seem daunting. However, it’s essential to consider the long-term financial benefits they offer. By improving productivity, enhancing collaboration, and boosting employee well-being, these solutions deliver a significant return on investment over time. Additionally, the versatility and durability of soundproof pods and booths ensure that they remain valuable assets for years to come.
Reduced Real Estate Costs:
One of the most significant financial benefits of soundproof pods and booths is their ability to optimize space utilization. Businesses can create designated areas for focused work and collaboration within the existing office layout. This helps maximize the use of their square footage. This may reduce the need for additional office space and save on real estate costs.
Lower Turnover Rates:
Investing in employee well-being pays dividends in the form of reduced turnover rates. Providing employees with a comfortable and productive work environment is key. It can increase job satisfaction and loyalty, thereby reducing recruitment and training costs linked to employee turnover.
Energy Efficiency:
Many soundproof pods and booths are equipped with energy-efficient features such as LED lighting and climate control systems. Minimizing energy consumption helps businesses lower utility bills. It also reduces their carbon footprint, resulting in long-term cost savings and environmental benefits.
Conclusion:

BIG designs Virgin Hyperloop Certification Center for West Virginia
Virgin Hyperloop is building a centre for testing and certifying its high-speed transportation system in West Virginia, designed by architecture firm BIG.
The Hyperloop Certification Center (HCC) facility will include a six-mile-long tube for testing Virgin Hyperloop for mass transportation use. The aim is to achieve safety certification for the new mode of transport – intended to be ultra-fast, with zero direct emissions – by 2025 and for it to be in operation by 2030.
The Virgin Hyperloop Certification Center will be built in West Virginia
"Today is one of the most exciting days in Virgin Hyperloop's history," said Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Hyperloop parent company Virgin Group.
"The Hyperloop Certification Center is the start of the hyperloop journey for West Virginia, for the United States, and for the world," he added. "We're one step closer to making hyperloop travel a reality for people everywhere."
Virgin Hyperloop released visuals of the BIG-designed HCC this month with the announcement that it will be built in Charleston, West Virginia. The state was among 17 states vying for the project following a request for proposals from Virgin Hyperloop.
Renderings show a pill-shaped building attached to a six-mile tube
Renderings show a large, pill-shaped building that extends to the tube, through which the hyperloop pod travels, on one side.
An open-air space is carved into the middle of the building. Here, a hoist is attached to a steel structure that runs along the top, so the pod can be lifted into place in the tube.
Indoor workspaces wrap around the outdoor space in a ring shape, with glazed walls offering views in between them. Large expanses of glass also feature inside, with the motif of curved openings featured throughout.
There will be an open-air space in the middle
HCC will be where the company tests and certifies the global safety and industry standards of the system. According to Virgin Hyperloop, it will provide a boost for the industry of West Virginia, with 150-200 engineering and technician jobs, and 13,000 local jobs in construction, manufacturing, operation and maintenance.
Hyperloop was first conceived by Tesla and Space X founder Elon Musk in 2013 as a system of partially depressurised tubes that pods travel through at near-supersonic speeds.
Virgin Hyperloop is among a number of companies vying to develop the technology after Musk open-sourced it. First established as Hyperloop One in 2014, the company was renamed Virgin Hyperloop One when Virgin made a major investment in 2017. The name has since been shortened.
Pods can be hoisted into the outdoor area
HCC marks the latest advancement in creating a commercial Virgin Hyperloop in the US, which is expected to be 10 times faster than traditional rail.
Earlier this year, the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Elaine Chao and the Non-Traditional and Emerging Transportation Technology (NETT) Council created guidance for a regulatory framework for hyperloop in the United States.
The company's DevLoop test site in Nevada, which BIG also designed, marked the world's first hyperloop test track. Virgin Hyperloop has recorded "historic speeds" of 387 kilometres per hour on the 500-metre test track.
Testing facilities and offices will be arranged in a loop
BIG, which was founded by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, and Virgin Hyperloop also revealed videos in 2018 to show how hyperloop passengers will have the illusion they are travelling in a transparent tube.
Virgin Hyperloop has also made advancements outside of the US. Last year, the government of the Indian state of Maharashtra approved plans to develop a high-speed line between Mumbai and Pune, which could become the world's first hyperloop.
Working with BIG, Virgin also developed the infrastructure design for a Hyperloop in the United Arab Emirates. In 2018, Virgin Hyperloop revealed a prototype design of the pods that will be used on network, which is expected to transport passengers between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in just 12 minutes.

New world news from Time: Dubai Decrees Itself the A.I. City-State of the Future
There’s no direct flight from Dubai to Detroit. So when the three co-founders of Dubai-based Derq, a traffic-safety startup, need to get to the carmaking capital of the U.S., they take a connecting flight on Air France through Paris or on Emirates through Boston. That typically means a four-leg, 32-hour round-trip for at least one of them once a month.
It would be unthinkable for the startup, which uses artificial intelligence to predict and prevent car accidents, not to have a presence in the Motor City. So after securing a $1.5 million round of funding in October, the company opened a satellite office in Detroit. But although two of Derq’s three co-founders were educated in the U.S., they aren’t interested in basing their whole operation there. After all, Dubai’s government is offering perks to startups that are just too good to give up. Co-founder Georges Aoude, who earned a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from MIT in 2011, reels off the reasons: government support, access to roads to test Derq’s technology and “an affordable place to launch and incubate.”
Derq is on the receiving end of a deliberate push by the Dubai government in recent years to turn the emirate into a living laboratory for nascent technology. In 2016, its hereditary leader Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, also Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, set a goal that 25% of all transportation in the UAE be autonomous by 2030. In 2017, Dubai—one of seven emirates that make up the UAE—vowed that within three years it would have the world’s first government powered by blockchain, the technology underlying cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. And at the World Government Summit in Dubai in February, Sheik Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, Dubai’s crown prince, launched 26 government-led projects under the 10x initiative, which aims to make its eponymous capital city the world’s most innovative within a decade.
The strategy reflects the emirate’s desire for soft power as it seeks to turn itself into a hub for global innovation. But it’s also a test of whether a benign autocracy like Dubai can usher in the next wave of technology—AI—by decree, and if so, what that means for more open, democratic countries that are also trying to incubate technologies intended to reshape the world.
It can feel as if Dubai is constructing the set of a science-fiction movie. Based on the prototypes it has unveiled in recent months, autonomous robocops may someday patrol the Dubai Mall as flying taxis whisk passengers above the gridlock-prone Sheikh Zayed Road. Self-driving buslike pods might drop commuters directly at their doorsteps. At the main airport, a system of hidden cameras disguised as a virtual aquarium tunnel may in the near future scan passengers’ faces and irises as they gawk at digital fish.
These aren’t just futuristic follies intended to look good on press releases. There’s real money behind such ideas. In 2016, Sheik Mohammed put up $270 million for the Dubai-based -Future Endowment Fund, which invests in -innovation. Its Accelerators program accepts startups on the basis of their proposed solutions to government concerns. The Dubai police department, for instance, asked Accelerator applicants to “utilize artificial intelligence … to provide statistics that may support the decision-making process or allow for faster response to emergency situations.”
A leadership reshuffle in October reinforced the government’s commitment as Sheik Mohammed appointed 27-year-old Omar bin Sultan al-Olama as the UAE’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence, creating what is thought to be the world’s first such Cabinet position. “With AI, we cannot afford to be reactive. We must be proactive,” al-Olama tells TIME. “That’s the goal of government: to be proactive and do something about it today.”
The push to attract tech startups and investors to Dubai is consistent with Sheik Mohammed’s reorienting of the emirate’s economy away from dependence on oil revenue after taking over in 2006. The early years of that effort resulted in what Dubai is best known for today: fantastical skyscrapers, ultra-luxury tourist accommodations and global trade. It seems to have paid off; while the price of oil has dropped 37% since 2013, the Dubai stock market is up 155%, according to Bloomberg data from January. Oil once made up about 50% of Dubai’s gross domestic product. Now it accounts for less than 1% of it.
The initial stage changed the face of Dubai as vast infrastructure and commercial projects were built. Now the next stage aims to create an urban environment where flying cabs and robot cops are everyday sights. If the govern-ment intends to construct a thriving playpen for technological guinea pigs, the people who live there are—by one measure—receptive to it. An Accenture study last year found that three-fourths of UAE residents are ready to adopt AI-powered devices and services, compared with a world average of 62%.
It’s not as if they have much choice. The UAE’s leadership may be benevolent, but it is authoritarian. The state ranks 147th out of 167 countries on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index. Political parties are outlawed, and the rulers’ word is absolute. And democracy matters when it comes to technological advancement, argues Loren Graham, an MIT professor emeritus in the history of science. Innovation has historically flourished in open, democratic societies not least because they have legal systems that are not subject to political whims, he says. Disruptive technology can ignite courtroom squabbles, and more repressive societies can’t always guarantee a level legal playing field—plus there’s the risk that a sitting ruler could see an entrepreneur with enough success and wealth as “an implicit, if not explicit, challenge,” Graham says.
Officials in Dubai brush off any suggestion that their type of government has any effect on how the gadgets and AI tested on its roadways and in its airspace are developed and deployed. Dubai is investing in technology that serves the people, says al-Olama. “His Highness Sheik Mohammed says the main goal of government is happiness,” he says. “He made my mandate that, yes, we need to be AI-ready, but in a way that makes people happier.”
Dubai is at least attempting to attract firms and investors from around the world—unlike China, whose autocratic leadership has pursued AI dominance through homegrown technology while laying down hurdles for foreign entrants like Silicon Valley giants Facebook and Google. “Dubai is in an amazing position to welcome great ideas from all over the world,” says Khalfan Juma Belhoul, CEO of the Dubai Future Foundation, touting its proposed “country in residence” program that will help other nations develop new technologies. The type of government behind the initiatives “absolutely” does not matter, he says.
Christopher Davidson, a Middle East politics professor at the U.K.’s Durham University, says Sheik Mohammed’s ability to get his plans “done fast” has been instrumental in diversifying Dubai’s economy. The biggest risk factor is long-term stability, he says. “If we have a ruling family, the weak element is who comes next,” says Davidson. “Can we be sure the next man on top is as good at this as the current one?”
Derq co-founder Amer Abufadel states his view more bluntly. “Probably not being a democracy sometimes helps,” he says. “There’s one decision-maker who says, ‘We want to push forward,’ and everybody follows. There’s little room for debate. Once the leader says it, it needs to happen.”
That top-down approach sounds very much like a corporation, but a lack of democratic oversight can lead to corruption and cronyism. While the UAE ranks relatively high on countries that successfully resist graft—it’s No. 21 on Transparency International’s ranking of 180 nations—its model of governance may at some point turn into a hindrance. In Saudi Arabia, for example, questions about transparency have slowed the initial public offering of a 5% stake in state-controlled Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer. Although the unprecedented IPO is key to the kingdom’s economic diversification plan, it has yet to happen two years after being unveiled.
And there’s another question for creators themselves: If the unelected rulers of the UAE do gain dominance in AI, are entrepreneurs confident that these world-altering technological advances will be used for fair and egalitarian purposes? Right now, Derq’s co-founders are focused on more immediate issues, like the best route from Dubai to Detroit. They joke that if they get enough business in Detroit, maybe airlines will start flying there directly. They laugh at the suggestion, but who knows? The Dubai government is, after all, the owner of the airline Emirates.
