TASK #1: 20 Questions
cw: alcohol mention
If your character’s in a bad mood, do they prefer to be left alone or have someone try to cheer them up?
Natalia definitely prefers to be left alone. When she was growing up, it was hard to find alone time in a house so full of kids. But she would always find a place to be alone, even if it was sitting in the closet for a few minutes.
How do they deal/have they dealt with conflict in their relationships with others, past or present?
She has never been in a relationship. They’re not her thing. Natalia is aromantic and asexual, and she has never felt the desire to be romantically attached to anyone.
Who or what is your character currently proudest of? Why?
She is proudest of her siblings. Anything they do to be successful makes her happy and proud. It really doesn’t take much.
Explain why your character has moved to/stayed in NYC?
Natalia initially moved to NYC for interior design school. In her senior year, she was part of an apprenticeship and got a full-time job with the firm when she graduated. She hasn’t left since. NYC is too wonderful to leave anyway.
If your character was having a bad day, which of these would they prefer as a means to cheer them up? Their favorite dish, a massage, or some space?
Probably both a favorite dish and some space. Whenever she has a bad day at work, she comes home and puts on one of her comfort films or TV shows, then she makes herself a giant bowl of pasta. Maybe she’ll also pour herself one drink.
What usually jump starts their day? Coffee? Exercise? A Shower? Breakfast? Or something else entirely?
A shower and coffee! Lots of coffee. Sometimes that is her breakfast.
Does your character thrive in order or chaos?
Order. 100%.
Would your character say that their parents were/are good at being parents?
She would call her parents amazing, loving, and extremely supportive. She loves them and is grateful for them.
What scares your character the most?
She is scared of heights. You won’t catch Natalia going on a tour of the top of the Empire State Building or any other skyscraper in Manhattan.
What did the last relationship your character was in teach them?
She hasn’t been in a relationship, but her friendships have taught her love and patience, and taught her how to let loose a bit.
If your character could choose 1 superpower, what would it be and why?
The power to stop time. Sometimes there aren’t enough hours in the day to work, sleep, and relax. Stopping time just for an hour every so often would be enough to help her get caught up.
What’s something people often misunderstand about your character?
A lot of people at work think of her as aloof, but she is just focused. She wants to be taken seriously and let her work speak for itself. In truth, she knows if she is a bit more friendly she may get more praise and perhaps a raise. But opening up to people she worked with is a bit daunting. What if they don’t like her? Then any hope of climbing the ladder in her firm would be dashed.
What is something your character tends to procrastinate on?
Doing chores. She will wait until the sink is full to do dishes and wait until her hampers are full to do laundry.
Where does your character like to go/what does your character like to do for inspiration?
The museum! There is so much to see in museums that it just inspires her. She also reads a lot of magazines, books, and she gets inspiration from some of her peers. Natalia loves improving vague ideas from other people.
Does your character usually follow their head or their heart?
During work, she follows her head. But in life, she often follows her heart. Some jerks in her life told her that she was a robot because she was never romantically involved, but she loves deeply. Just not romantically. She loves her family. She loves her friends.
Who or what brings your character the most joy in their life today?
Talking to her family on FaceTime and going for long walks in the park (during the day.) As far as her family chats go, they are often chaotic. There are so many people who pop in and out, there is a lot of noise, and there is a lot of talking over each other. That’s all perfectly normal to her. She grew up in a big family and expects chaos most of the time. It just makes her happy to see everyone doing well.
Does your character have a hero or someone they admire or look up to? If so, who and why?
It’s a bit cliché, but she looks up to her parents. They are just good people who give an abundance of love to everyone they meet. She really admires them for it, and she always tries to give the same amount of love they’ve given back into the world.
Is your character much of a reader? If so, what author(s) do they like?
Natalia always says she wants to read more, but when she gets into reading, she really gets into it. But reading comes and goes. She loves reading about some interior designers and their processes, and also loves Jane Austen novels. And she loves reading new adult fiction by queer authors - though sometimes those books are a bit too ~spicy~ for her taste.
Does your character like surprises? How do they tend to react to surprises?
She absolutely hates surprises. When people tease about surprise presents, she just wants to know what they are right away.
Is there anything that your character collects? If so, what is it/what are they?
Natalia doesn’t collect anything. She doesn’t like having a lot of stuff around the house that she never uses.

For its July 21 issue in 1952, LIFE Magazine devoted a multi-page spread to the then-brand new American superliner, the SS United States, which had made its maiden voyage only earlier that month. The United States had departed NYC on July 3, 1952, at 12:07 PM EST (UTC -5), passing Ambrose Light (the official starting point for all Blue Riband attempts) at 2:36 PM. On July 7, at 5:16 AM GMT (UTC 0), the United States passed Bishop’s Rock off Cornwall, England, crossing the Atlantic in 3 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes. The ship had averaged the unprecedented speed of 35.59 knots, shaving 10 hours 2 minutes off the previous speed record and stealing the Blue Riband title from the prewar British liner RMS Queen Mary.
The United States was a technological marvel of its day, modern and futuristic in every possible way. The interiors were done entirely in polished metals, fabrics and glass. Clothes hangers in cabin closets were aluminum. The ship’s twin funnels towered fifty-five feet above their bases, as tall as a five-story building. The ship was 990 feet long by 101.5 feet wide (301.75 x 30.94 meters), able to fit in the Panama Canal’s locks with only inches to spare. The ship was the brain-child of William Francis Gibbs, a brilliant self-taught marine architect who had dreamed of designing a superliner for his country since his childhood over half a century earlier. The design firm Gibbs & Cox, which he had formed in 1922 alongside his brother Frederick Gibbs and Daniel H. Cox (joined 1929), was one of the foremost naval design firms in the country by the end of the interwar period, and roughly 70% of American tonnage launched during WWII was built either to blueprints or working plans drawn up by Gibbs and Cox. There were few people anywhere in the world with as sterling a reputation as William Gibbs.
There were several high-profile incidents in the 1930s of ships going up in flames, including the French L’Atlantique in 1933, the American Morro Castle in 1934, and the French Paris in 1939. Although neither of those French ships resulted in loss of life (the L’Atlantique caught fire in the English Channel between voyages, and the crew were rescued quickly; the Paris caught fire while docked in Le Havre, France, with the small few on board disembarking quickly) the Morro Castle disaster resulted in the deaths of 137 passengers and crew (total capacity was 729 crew and passengers). The disaster was splashed across American headlines for days afterward and recounted in lurid detail, and had a large effect on national consciousness for some time. Additionally, the French liner Normandie was lost also to fire in 1942 while at dock in New York City, while being converted into a troopship; Navy carelessness had led to a conflagration that cost two lives, and fireboats putting out the blaze poured so much water into the ship’s tops it became unstable, and rolled over in the night, becoming a total loss. Gibbs was determined that a fiery death would never befall his own ship.
To that end, he designed the ship to be completely fireproof: not a single flammable material was used anywhere on board the ship. All interior decorations were constructed out of metal, and all fabrics and paints used were completely non-flammable. The only wood used on the entire ship were the butcher blocks in the kitchens, and the grand piano in the First Class ballroom, built by Steinway and Sons out of a special fire-resistant species of wood (the company having refused to build for Gibbs a piano out of aluminum at his request) which had been tested and approved. The interiors were stark, sleek, and ultramodern (though were seen as antiseptic by some, who preferred the warm homeyness of ships like the Queen Mary).
Gibbs oversaw every aspect of the ship’s construction and fitting out, from the details of the hull’s shape to the propulsion plant. Built to U.S. Naval standards for possible use as a wartime troop transport if need be, in return for the Navy subsidizing $50 million of the total $78 million cost of constructing the ship, the vessel was highly compartmentalized, and possessed redundancy in every aspect of its propulsion plant: watertight bulkheads went several decks higher than other civilian ships of the time, allowing for the ship to remain afloat with any four compartments breached; there were separate forward and aft engine plants, one beneath each of its two funnels, subdivided into boiler and engine rooms, and each could drive the ship on its own if the other was compromised. The ship’s top decks were constructed of aluminum rather than steel to save weight; the hull was highly streamlined, its bow tapered like an arrowhead to cut optimally through the water, and it possessed four specially-designed, five-bladed propellers for increased efficiency.
But the biggest aspect of the ship’s design, the trait that remained top secret for over a decade, was its speed: the ship had a top speed of 40 knots, and could reach 20 knots sailing backward. These astonishing figures were made possible by the ship’s equally top-secret engine configuration: inside its streamlined greyhound’s body, the United States had the same propulsion plant as an Essex-Class aircraft carrier—four Westinghouse steam turbines powered by eight Babcock & Wilcox boilers operating at 1,000 psi. Each of these eight boilers was as tall as a two-story brownstone house. In fact, though the ship made its maiden voyage across the Atlantic in a breathless three and a half days, all subsequent voyages of its career were planned with a then-average crossing time of five days—allowing the ship to operate with only six of its eight boilers active at any one time, alternating through them and allowing for maintenance on whichever remaining two were not active at the time mid-voyage, cutting down on maintenance times in port. And, even operating at 75% power, the United States still held so much reserve speed that, no matter what delays it experienced, in its first five years of service it was never once late on arrivals.
The United States was the largest civilian ship built in the U.S. at the time, and is still the largest American-built ocean liner to this day. It retains the record for the fastest ocean liner ever built before or since, and no civilian ship of its size has ever come close to matching its speed.

Steinway tower
Tumblr media
Appearing like a softly breaking wave, these patterns are staggered across the facade to create distinctive moire that changes dramatically when seen in different lights or from various distances. This approach unifies the massing of 111 West 57th Street in the tradition of classic towers such as One Wall Street, 30 Rockefeller Center or the Empire State Building without mimicking the historic precedent.īlocks of sequentially varying profiles had been modeled, extruded, glazed, and then stacked into an involuted pattern for 111 West 57th Street. The setbacks serve as sites for a finial at the top of each column of the terracotta ornament that rises on the east and west facades. Mandated setbacks were multiplied where the building form contacts the sky-exposure plane, resulting in a feathered rather than a stepped profile. According to the New York-based firm, “We achieved that goal by carefully shaping the tower’s profile and by developing an innovative approach to using an authentic material from the golden age of the Manhattan skyscraper: terracotta.”Īn interpretation of the tower resonates with what is possible within the requirements of the Midtown Manhattan zoning envelope. The residential tower is not only one of the tallest buildings in New York City but is also a prominent new local and regional landmark that will be responsibly contributing to the city’s elegant skyline. Located on Billionaires’ Row in Midtown Manhattan, 111 West 57th Street reached its supertall height in 2018 and has a height-to-width ratio of 24:1, thereby making it the world’s skinniest skyscraper. According to their report, the unit followed an open-concept design. With a total height of 1,428 ft, SHoP Architects completed its work last week while its developers announced that it is ready for residents to move in. Studio Sofield has taken care of the skyscraper’s interior which tried to make the building even more attractive.Īs revealed by Business Insider which has taken a tour of a 3-bedroom unit on the 43rd floor, there is a private elevator entrance for each unit which is spread across a huge area of 4,500 square feet of living space. #architecture #aerialphotography #nyc #newyork #manhattan #centralpark #architecturephotography #urbanphotography #cool /LxlUSTPKlH The 1428-foot-tall 111 West 57th Street (New York City) seen from the sky. There are luxury amenities as well like a 25-meter swimming pool and a private dining room. This beautiful building took its inspiration from New York’s Art Deco era and it has terracotta tiles coupled with glass walls facing either Central Park or Lower Manhattan. The price of a studio unit at the Steinway Tower starts from $7.75 million whereas a penthouse apartment is priced at $66 million. Gregg Pasquarelli, principal at SHoP Architects, speaking about the tower to CNN referred to the skyscraper as a project of “extraordinary proportions and epic grandeur”. The Top Interior Designer NY Trends Taking Over
New York City is a hub for innovation and cutting-edge design in everything from fashion to food to visual arts. It should come as no surprise that interior design follows suit, with some of the most progressive and unique trends leading the way. From boutique firms to individual interior designer NY has no shortage of creative talent pushing boundaries in residential and commercial spaces.
Tumblr media
We’re breaking down the top interior design trends making waves in NYC right now. Whether you’re looking to refresh your home or want inspiration for a commercial project, understanding these trends is key to capturing the essence of New York’s dynamic design scene.
Organic Shapes and Forms
Nature is having a major moment in interior designNYC. Look for organic, irregular shapes and forms that bring the outdoors in. These biophilic elements have both aesthetic and functional benefits, connecting people more closely to nature while also providing visual interest.
NYC designers are incorporating organic shapes and forms in various ways, including custom millwork and built-ins with asymmetric shapes, curved walls and ceilings, kidney-shaped coffee tables or oval dining sets, and abstract art or lighting fixtures inspired by natural elements. The overall feel is fluid yet grounded.
Warm, Moody Hues
Gone are the days of all-white, stark interiors. Rich, moody hues are taking over in their place for a cozier, enveloping feel. Deep greens, navy blues, charcoal grays, and warm metallics like bronze and brass are some of the most popular paint colors and materials right now. Often used on cabinetry, walls, and even ceilings, these colors provide a dramatic backdrop for decor and artwork.
By balancing moodier hues with plenty of natural light and lighter accent colors and decor items, NYC designers are creating spaces that feel glamorous but still livable in real life. This trend effortlessly walks the line between stylized and comfortable.
Sleek Minimalism
At the other end of the spectrum, sleek, minimal interiors devoid of clutter continue to gain traction. This aesthetic highlights quality over quantity, with a tightly edited mix of furniture and decor that makes intentional statements.
Expect to see lots of neutral colors and materials, like white oak and marble, coupled with modern silhouettes. Clean lines, ample negative space, and an absence of overly personal clutter characterize this trend. High-end lighting fixtures and artwork take center stage. NYC designers often apply this minimal treatment to open-concept spaces, making them appear even more spacious and airy.
Maximum Texture Mixing
Forget playing it safe by sticking to one texture—mix and match for true depth and visual appeal. Smooth glass, nubby wool, glossy lacquer finishes, natural stone—you name it-is, fair game. The key is to incorporate these varied textures strategically so that there is plenty for the eye to discover without crossing over into cluttered territory.
In addition to using a range of textiles like wool area rugs, silk pillows, cotton throws, and velvet upholstery, creative shelving, and object styling make the most of contrasting materials. Matte ceramics combined with sleek metal bookends, a wooden bowl holding apples and oranges, and rough linen napkins on a smooth marble dining table bring this playful approach a new dimension.
Custom Built-In Storage
As real estate prices continue to rise in NYC, so does the need to maximize square footage through smart storage solutions. Custom built-ins offer tons of hidden storage capacity while also personalizing a space. From floor-to-ceiling bookshelves to window seats or bench seating with storage compartments underneath, built-ins are tailored to exact room dimensions and needs.
In addition to anchoring a room, built-ins add architectural detail suited precisely to each home. They also reduce visual clutter by containing items that would otherwise crowd surfaces. For these reasons, custom built-in cabinetry, shelving, and storage reign top NYC interior designers and their clients.
Statement Lighting Takes Center Stage
Lighting serves both practical and aesthetic purposes, making it a focal point rather than an afterthought in interior design. From sculptural pendant lights to vertical sconces and custom chandeliers, statement-making fixtures elevate rooms beyond basic overhead can lighting.
In addition to striking stand-alone fixtures, creative arrangements like staggered wall sconces or clustered pendants make ordinary lighting extraordinary. By mixing different shapes, sizes, and styles, lighting becomes an artistic element unto itself. Statement lighting pulls together an interior design concept while also injecting personality. For maximum versatility down the road, smart NYC designers opt for fixtures that allow customizable shades and bulbs.
Final Thoughts
Interior design trends come and go, but some standouts like these take hold beyond passing fads. Both residential and commercial spaces in NYC benefit from focusing on quality over quantity, clean lines, creative built-ins and lighting, edited decor, and bringing nature’s beauty indoors through organic shapes and forms. Rich colors and varied textures also add much-needed depth and dimension when balanced thoughtfully. Keep these key trends on your radar for interior design inspiration that captures the innovation and livability that makes New York City spaces so special. Their influence extends far beyond the five boroughs while retaining a quintessentially NYC point of view.

Olson Kundig Expands to New York City
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, April 28, 2022— Olson Kundig is pleased to announce the opening of their new office in New York City, underscoring the firm’s ongoing commitment to and investment in urban spaces. Located in Midtown Manhattan, near Bryant Park, the Morgan Library and the Empire State Building, the office creates a new hub from which the firm will nimbly support clients and projects, while fostering cultural exchange and design dialogue between New York and Seattle.
The new office occupies the 10th floor of a mid-rise tower built in 1923, with views of the busy urban streetscape to the north and the rich architectural interest of surrounding buildings to the south. The office is anchored by a signature gathering and event space known as the Living Room, where an oversized, 144-square-foot table, designed by Tom Kundig and fabricated by Spearhead, evokes a conceptual cityscape rising from the landscape.
Created from a tapestry of raw timber offcuts, representing both Olson Kundig projects and the work of other architects, the table introduces a physical embodiment of Pacific Northwest design culture within the new office space. An integrated turntable and record collection curated by Seattle’s Sub Pop Records further underscores connections to Olson Kundig’s home in Washington State and the wider culture of the firm. To support a range of different configurations, the table is mounted on wheels and divided into quarters—each measuring six feet by six feet and weighing 800 pounds.
“Opening a New York office space allows us to share a bit of the Pacific Rim and our ‘unstable edge’ mentality with the East Coast, forging new relationships and opportunities for collaboration,” shares Alan Maskin, principal/owner of Olson Kundig and design lead for the new office. “That influence goes both ways, of course—shared cultural events and firm culture creates a river that flows between the two cities, exchanging ideas and energy back and forth.”
Curated artwork will feature heavily in the new office, continuing the firm’s longstanding tradition of making art a part of everyday life and integrating diverse forms of creative expression into its workspace. A raised platform between workstations frames a small display area that extends the vision of The Ledge, a gallery founded within Olson Kundig’s Seattle office in 2011, to New York. Dedicated wall space throughout the office will host paintings and other works, while a wide “runway” between workstations and the kitchen can host sculptures and free- standing pieces.
“While Olson Kundig previously occupied a small workspace in New York, this new office represents a more significant investment in office space and participation with the design culture of the city.” says Hemanshu Parwani (HP), principal/owner and CEO of Olson Kundig, as well as Maskin’s collaborator. “From a business perspective, it will improve client relations and project delivery throughout the East Coast and international markets, while allowing us to recruit top design talent.”
