Chick Lit

I define Chick Lit as books that may include a romance, but it’s rather light--the comedy or dramedy is more center stage, and the friendships or complex female relationships often take precedence over the romantic relationships.  Chick Lit may also be a bit frothier than a romance novel--less death and destruction.  While a romance novel can be Chick Lit, it does not HAVE to be, if that makes sense.  A romance novel may not have a super sad or bittersweet ending, but I prefer for my Chick Lit to end happily.

Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend, and Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan.  If you don’t know already, these books follow Rachel Chu (and her acquaintances) as she navigates the reality of her boyfriend’s ridiculously wealthy, over the top family in Singapore.  These are some of my favorite books ever, and I think that the satirical edge makes them the definition of smart Chick Lit.  These are NOT romance novels in my opinion (Rachel and Nick’s relationship takes a backseat after the first book; Astrid’s romantic struggles are good, but never a main plot) and the books are quite a bit more biting and absurd than the move.  Though I also love the movie.  

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaura Jaswal.  After dropping out of law school, Nikki takes up teaching a creative writing class at the community center in her area.  Most of her students are, you guessed it, Punjabi widows who often have a difficult time speaking English, let alone writing it--but when they do start telling stories, they are about FUCKING.  Because Jaswal is a master at threading in socially relevant issues, the book also tackles some darker topics--but it’s fun and sexy and you really feel these women as people.  I also just read Jaswal’s second book, The Unlikely Adventures of the Chergill Sisters, and that’s also quite good.

The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot.  An oldie but a goodie--and YA, yes, but this is Meg Cabot in her prime I do think that the Prime Meg Cabot is one of the definitive Chick Lit voices.  Also, The Mediator is her best shit.  Essentially, Suze sees ghosts, and has always seen ghosts.  She kicks malevolent spirit ass on the regular.  When her mom remarries, she moves to California and ends up living in a house occupied by the restless spirit of Jesse de Silva, a hot ghost.  Adventures ensue.  It is MAGICAL.  

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  I have to put this in there because I think it is?  But it’s like.... kinda devastating tbh.  But SO GOOD.  It essentially takes an interview transcript style narration to tell the story of a 70s rock band and why they broke up.  You’ve probably seen me recommend this already.  It’s INTENSE and one of my favorite books of the year so far.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  Another bittersweet novel about fake famous people!  This one takes on Evelyn Hugo, an actress who was married seven times.  And it tackles her life story HUSBAND BY HUSBAND.  Love it.  But what’s sadder?  This or Daisy Jones?  I’m not sure.  Daisy Jones is probably my favorite of the two because the core romance at its center (though I wouldn’t call it a romance novel) ruined me.  But Evelyn Hugo is also quite good.

Romance/Erotica

Because the lines are OH so blurred these days.  I’d say that erotica is slightly more like pornography, but frankly many of the romance novels I read today are super on the borderline.  

Pestilence by Laura Thalassa.  I JUST wrote about this, so I won’t repeat myself too much...  But it’s a must-read.  So You Want To Fuck The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: A Series.  It’s an apocalyptic fantasy novel, I suppose, but the fantasy is quite light.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang.  Essentially, this tells the story of Stella, who is on the Autism Spectrum and believes that she’s bad at sex.  She hires Michael, an escort, to teach her how to be better.  Can you guess if they fall in love?  The author also has ASD, like Stella, and like Michael she is of Vietnamese descent, which adds authenticity to the novel.  It’s very sweet and very sexy, and I love it.  The Bride Test just came out, which is a sort of sequel spin off, and it’s also quite good!

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne.  Lucy and Joshua are coworkers who have long hated each other, and are in a constant game of one-upsmanship.  When a promotion is up for grabs, they go toe to toe--and may or may not end up realizing that their angry tension is actually sexual tension.  Kind of a new classic, very much a rom com, with great chemistry between the leads. Very fun.

From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata.  Jasmine Santos is a down-on-her luck figure skater--and she’s long hated Ivan Lukov, a skating star she’s known for years.  But when Ivan offers her the opportunity to become his pairs partner, she can’t turn him down.... even if she hates him.  (AGAIN, THE HATRED IS ACTUALLY SEXUAL TENSION.)  Yoooo this shit is so fucking good.  It’s like, super cheesy and yes many references are made to The Cutting Edge, but I don’t caaaare.  It’s the figure skating romance novel of my dreams.  They hate each other.  She notices his dick a lot.  Zapata’s novels are hit or miss for me, but I also REALLY enjoy her soccer romance novel, Kulti.  (Girl is a soccer player.  Girl ends up being coached by the German soccer star she used to idolize.  Girl thinks about his dick a lot.)

The Girl in 6E by A.R. Torre.  Due to a traumatic event in her past, Deanna finds herself compelled to hurt people--ideally, to kill them.  To suppress the urge, she stays locked up in her apartment, and makes money as a cam girl.  Of course, the nice guy who delivers her packages doesn’t know that.  And as she gets wrapped up in the pursuit of a dangerous man, she may have to break her own rules.  This is hardcore more of an erotica novel than a romance (though it’s the beginning of a series and the romance becomes part of the story as it goes on.  It’s definitely a thriller, it’s definitely super explicit, and it’s very engrossing.

Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn.  Let’s throw in some historical romance!  This is the kick off to one of my favorite series, which is multi-generational and focuses on ancient Rome.  Thea is a slave, and falls in love with fellow slave and gladiator Arias.  As they’re torn apart by fate, they struggle to find a way back to each other--and Thea ends up becoming the mistress of the emperor.  This is a super smart, super woman-centric series full of morally ambiguous characters.  I love it to death.

Thrillers

Yeah, I mean.  Thrillers can be kind of erotic sometimes.  But mostly I read straight up thrillers.  They MAY be domestic thrillers too!  I can’t say as much about these, because Twists.

Final Girls by Riley Sager.  Essentially, this novel takes on the slasher-centric “final girl” trope, focusing on a girl who survived a massacre at a cabin with her friends and became heavily associated with two other famous “final girls” in the press.  Years later, one of the final girls is murdered, leaving the remaining two with targets on their backs.  Riley Sager also wrote a novel which does a similar spin on the “campground slasher” trope (The Last Time I Lied), and I just really love his spin on thrillers.  They’re perfect summer reads, in my opinion.

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman.  A pair of honeymooners find a mysterious “something” in the water.  And because it’s a thriller, I can’t go beyond that.  Another great summer read--very much a frothy story with great tropical vibes.  Kind of ominous throughout, I loved it.

The Other Woman by Sandie Jones.  A classic “psycho mother-in-law” thriller.  Super pulpy. The mother-in-law’s name is PAMMIE.  And it actually all has a bit of a twist to it as well, which I found super delightful.  This one is borderline funny?  Anyway, I was cracking up throughout it.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing.  A husband and wife do really fucked up shit together to keep the spark alive.  This is one of those books wherein I loved it loved it loved it and then I was mad and then THE LAST SENTENCE HAPPENED.  Highly recommend.

My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.  A super unique, funny and also heartbreaking story about a Nigerian nurse whose beloved sister happens to have a bad habit of murdering guys.  What happens when said sister starts dating our main character’s crush?  Very well-done.

Dare Me by Megan Abbott.  A creeping, sinister story about cheerleaders and the coach they are kind of obsessed with.  Megan Abbott does literary domestic thrillers very well.  Something about the way she writes makes even mundane things seem SO disturbing.

The Au Pair by Emma Rous.  Seraphine and her brother, Danny, were born on a clifftop at their family manor.  Hours later, their mother threw herself to her death.  Years later, the death of their father prompts Seraphine to look into what really happened--and it may all lead back to the family au pair.  A very V.C. Andrews feeling novel, full of rich people and servants and affairs.  Good shit.

I hope this helps!  These just spring to mind immediately.  I’d read them at the beach (and I have read some at the beach).
