Top Dozen cdramas - 2024

This can obviously change but nothing truly exciting looks to air for the rest of the year so that's unlikely. My Top Dozen for the year are likely be set in stone.

It's a very idiosyncratic list which has two mini dramas, three moderns (!!! for me that's insane) and a lot of vibes dramas.

12 Hard to Find - all vibes all the times. A tragic romance that feels like a Gothic fairytale, this is what minidramas could be.

11 Love In the Desert - out of all the dramas on this list, this is the one that screams most "a good time." It's a romance and visual feast and webnovel madness and sexy good time and it made me cry.

10 Fortune Writer - a mini that is so smart and meta and fun about narratives and fate and villainy and fighting the story itself. So clever.

9 Derailment - a puzzle and a love story, telling most anything about it would be a spoiler but this story about a rich girl from 2025 who seemingly wakes up in a parallel universe in 2023 in body of a poor doppelganger, and the young man who was in love with the original has everything including addressing what it must feel to people to have a transmigrator possess a loved one.

8 Tender Light - the ending was just - it's the reason it's not n1. But the rest of this drama about an abused wife and an idealistic young man refusing to bow to societal pressure was just exquisite. It addresses morality and loneliness and complicity and sacrifice. Just incredible. Poetry in motion.

7 Will Love In Spring - a modern romance cdrama? In my list? Is the world ending? But seriously, this is such a gorgeous, realistic yet intense exploration of love and loss and trauma. It made me utterly reevaluate Li Xian to boot.

6 Snowfall - this is such a fever dream of a mood piece of a vampire romance, with seriously BDSM and gay vibes, as well as utterly incredible canon age gap ride or die OTP with Ouyang Nana bothering to act for the first time in her life and Vengo Gao embodying a gentleman vampire to perfection. Li Muge remains one of my favorite directors for a reason.

5 Heroes - the story of three very different men all consigned to the dustheap of history by changing times (the best swordsman in the era of guns, a former imperial guard of a regime about to be overthrown, a constable obedient to obsolete code who studied for imperial exams which got abolished) as the Qing dynasty is about to fall, this has fights, humor, three (!) separate love stories, philosophy and utter and complete heartbreak. The performances, the ideas, the filming and the writing all combine to make a bleak masterpiece with a 99% death rate (I am not kidding, only tertiaries make it out.) If I were in charge, it would get all the awards.

4 The Legend of Shen Li - the one truly mainstream idol costume hit on the list. It's an adult, passionate xianxia that reunites Zhao Liying and Lin Gengxin as deities and battle powerhouses in a love story that is so full of yearning and passion and intensity I feel like peeking through my fingers. This is everything xianxia romance tries to be and almost never is. This just might be my favorite xianxia of all time, tbh.

3 Eternal Brotherhood - a dark horse whose existence I didn't even know about before it aired. Visually stunning despite its tiny budget, this narrative about three sworn brothers in a kingdom and world in crisis, is pitch perfect in its humor, its intensity, its tragedy and its themes (also THREE!!!! amazing love stories despite not being a romance-centric show.) The battles, the friendships, the traumas, the darkness at the heart of it all!

2 Fangs of Fortune - the sole drama that can rival JoL2 for me (only caveat is it's still airing), this is visually the most jaw dropping drama I've ever seen, but it's also high fantasy the way it should be - making me feel so immersed that stopping feels like coming up from a deep dive or waking up from a hypervivid dream. It has impeccable performances (many from actors who I don't normally even like), and its plot and relationships and themes - fate and sacrifice and choice and found family bonds and trauma and so many other things - make it feel as if it was made just for me.

1 Joy of Life 2 - THE drama of 2024 for me. It's somehow better than the incredible first installment. It's funny, it's heartbreaking, it has insane performances, a narrative that hits all my personally favorite themes (a person trying to remain human in an inhuman world, righteousness not being weak), a large cast of fascinating characters who feel like they live in front of me (there are no throwaway roles in this), my favorite ship of the year (though it's not even a ship-centric show) and above all, Zhang Ruoyun's live wire of a performance as Fan Xian, arguably my favorite cdrama character of all time. It should not work yet it does. Brilliantly.

Well it's a contentious field and there has been a lot, so I'll narrow it further and give you 2024 so far, from my personal favorites but specifically ones that I believe added to the zeitgeist in some significant way.

This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it. Was it a crazy unhinged mess +1 roll for damage? Yes. Yes it was. Did it manage to hold all those tangled threads together? No it did not. Was it also a charming, sexy, engaging, non-stop piece of entertainment? Sure thing. I think this show is basically my KinnPorsche, and frankly I’ve been chasing that dragon naga since KP aired. Is it perfect? No. But it was balls to the wall FUN.

Cherry Magic (Thai remake)

A soft charming warm hug of a show about crushes and mind reading and self worth that really worked for me. With no-fuss execution from a consummate team (at GMMTV) and an OG lead pair (proving why they remain eternal and deserve to grow up). Look, here’s the thing, Cherry Magic is a great Thai BL in its own right - not comparing it to any other iteration. But even when I do compare (and I've seen all the Cherries and read the manga) it stands strong. I, personally, like the Thai BL slightly better than the Japanese live action yaoi, but I think that’s because I just really enjoy Thai BL's style and I LOVE TayNew. Also all the kissing was both present and better in this version. As it should be from Thailand.

Century of Love

This is a very pretty drama about a young man who fell in love with a nice girl 100 years ago, and when she died in his arms, he was cursed to live until he could meet her reborn self. Only this time around, she’s reborn into the body of a man. Or is she? I love it when Thailand gets all up in its own historical business and reincarnation and shizz. I like this pair (it’s not DaouOffroad’s fault I didn’t enjoy their first series.) Daou’s wushu is snazzy and we got a unique meet cute. (Erm… Remeet cute? Meet cute 2.0?) Ultimately, this is I Feel You Linger in the Air + First Love Again, rather than (as one might expect) Until We Meet Again or The Director Who Buys Me Dinner. The leads turned in great performances, although Daou outclassed everybody else on that screen. It’s a good story and a great BL and I can’t find any major faults with it beyond a certain level of camp that is sadly endemic to lakorns. It was, to put it succinctly, a VERY ENJOYABLE show.

This is the only "typical" BL I'll be recommending on this list and that's because this is such a FUN show. A charming quintessentially modern Thai BL about a doctor and a boxer who start as a one night stand and then fall in love. Great rep for everything from Muay Thai, to safe sex, to FUN sex, to ace, to bisexuality, to smiley kisses, to the first legal gay wedding in a Thai BL. It’s a delight and I enjoyed (almost) every single moment of it. With out question it's best traits are active positive representations of green flag boys, communication, and grown-up relationships but the chemistry is on point too. Highly recommended as one of 2024's best pick-me-ups. (We need it, been a bit of a downer year.)

We Are

If Wandee Goodday is your happy pill, We Are is the warmest hug on the planet. Of the ones on this list, this is the only one I've already rewatched. 2x (High praise!) I loved show. It was slow to find its stride (I didn’t get into it until ep 6) but I’m so glad I gave it a chance. It’s a soft ensemble piece with multiple couples and very little plot, but I didn’t care because it’s not trying to be anything more substantial. Essentially this was a series of vignettes covering one year of uni for a queer friendship group finding love, new friends, and laughter. It’s not being harsh with us or it’s characters the way some offerings of this ilk have been (side eyes Friend Zone and Only Friends) nor did it tumble into Gen Y chaos. In fact, this reminded me more than anything of a refined and elevated Love Sick - just with older characters and occurring within a genre that has matured too. In it's own quiet way, it was groundbreaking. It has that close queer friendship group meets earnest gentleness that made me adore Love Sick and Make It Right so much. In other words, this was Thai BL at its finest, finding it roots again 10 years on, but also stretching upwards and showing us what it could do with that original seed. So? I adored it. Did it blow my mind? No. But it left me smiling and made me belly laugh quite a bit.

I hope you give these 5 a chance.

What would you say are the top 3 (or 5) strongest clues that say Elucien/Gwynriel are gonna happen? The ones that really feel so solid to you.

Ooooh, this is a good question.

For Gwynriel:

That Gwyn is the only character to treat Az's shadows as being separate from himself. It' like a guy who begins dating a girl who has children but he never pays attention to them versus the guy who goes out of his way to get to know the children, proving that he understands the girl and her children are a packaged deal.

That Az is not looking as Gwyn as someone in need of his protection. I'm sure there will be some of that in their book, mates always look out for one another, but there is a big difference between "we can do this together" versus, "I'll do it for you so you don't get hurt".

That Gwyn seems to have a bloodthirsty side to her personality, just as Az does. He can torture in a symphony of pain which means he has chosen to finesse his craft. He's not "let's get this over as quick as possible because I don't like it," it's, "I'm going to draw this out nice and slow and make it hurt in ways you never dreamed." I think he feels guilty about his enjoyment of it afterward because he thinks it makes him a bad person but I think he gets satisfaction from the actual act. Someone like Gwyn who was excited over the thought of the Valkyries cracking skulls and skewering their enemies is well matched for his brutality.

That Gwyn and Az seem to prefer a smaller group of friends over being extremely social, the life of the party. Neither seems to mind their alone time.

For Elucien, there are so many:

That Elain and Lucien share important core values. They are quick to apologize for failing others, they both prefer to avoid violence, they both enjoy being social and engaging with others. There will never be a time where they have to check up on one another, "I'm sorry, is this too overwhelming for you? We can head home if you need".

That Lucien has been loyal to Elain and only Elain ever since he found out who she was to him. No, he did not instantly love her but he chose to respect their bond while he took the time to learn about her whereas he could have easily continued his rakish ways especially after learning she was engaged to someone else. Loyalty to the FMC is sexy.

That Lucien was the one to meet Elain's father and live in the human lands. These are two enormous parts of Elain's past, things that mattered a great deal to her and it will only ever be Lucien who has insider knowledge of who her father was and what being human is about.

That SJM retconned Lucien's father so he'd have the power of the sun in his veins and had Elain constantly by the sunniest windows, as if any bit of darkness was abhorrent, claiming that she needs Sunshine.

That Elain has not yet touched or truly gotten to know Lucien. If the author wanted us to see why they were poorly matched, she would have shown them interacting. She would have shown that despite their best efforts to acknowledge their bond, they were just not fitting. Instead, she has Elain keeping Lucien at a distance book after book and I will never believe the answer to that puzzle is because "she doesn't like him," "she's clearly not interested." An author would more likely prevent two mates from interacting in a major way because she knows there is something there. She knows characters like Elain and Lucien need to remain apart because their chemistry will be obvious the second they start really talking.

Because Elain can hear Lucien's heart and because she is the most beautiful female he'd ever seen. Because he knew she needed fresh air when every single other person in the IC just accepted her being cooped up in her room for weeks. There is a connection between Elucien that is never going away and it would ruin any other romance for either character. No matter what Elain might share with someone else, Lucien is always going to hold a piece of her that the other cannot touch.

Forgive me, this'll be a bit off the top of my head, so I may make adjustments at some later date, but I absolutely MUST do my best to answer this RIGHT NOW. (I'm vibrating I'm so delighted by this \lol/)

0 The Fool/Luffy - The Fool isn't an idiot, as some people assume based on the name of the card, he's on a journey - as a matter of fact, it's a journey he takes *through* the major arcana. He learns about the world, and himself - about injustices and his own morals and limits. The Fool is about the journey.

1 The Magician/Shanks - The Magician is effectively the Fool's first teacher. The Magician card is as above, so below. He's all the major suits, he's magic and power. Good or Evil isn't relevant (though generally it's always positive to see this card).

2 The High Priestess/Nami - The Priestess is strong girl power - well, strong "things we often associate with feminine energy". She doesn't back down, she knows her strengths, and her weaknesses. There's a bluntness here too, and a fierceness. It's very "That look Nami gave Sanji on Whole Cake Island."

3 The Empress/Nico Robin - The Empress is more a motherly vibe and less a Strong Boss Lady vibes. She's caring, nurturing, protective, but not restrictive. There's a caring vibe that resonates with this that isn't really found in the Priestess.

4 The Emperor/Jinbei - I'm just name some moments - Making Luffy remember his nakama, giving him his blood, not joining when he wanted too - joining when he could do it right. Supporting Luffy even from a distance. Stern, strong, wise, educated, Supportive. Big Good Masculine Vibes.

5 The Hierophant/Monkey D. Garp - The hierophant is a teacher of sorts, kind of a societal vibe vs what The Magician teaches. Here to show you the path you "should" travel. Not necessarily the path you're going to want to travel - just know the road's probably going to be bumpier if you don't listen to him, but contextually, it could be more rewarding.

6 The Lovers/Roronoa Zoro - The Lovers Does NOT MEAN JUST ROMANTIC LOVE or sexy love or whatever. The Lovers is a card about dedication, devotion - being there for someone completely, and that person being there for you completely. Partners. This is a good Kid x Killer vibe card too.

7 The Chariot/Thousand Sunny - The Chariot is about motion, but controlled motion. There's generally no reins being depicted for this card (sometimes there is), but the person is still in control. The crew didn't have much direction when the Merry Go was their ship, but comparatively, they did with Sunny.

8 Strength/Usopp - Strength isn't usually talking about physical strength. It's strength of will. Why Usopp? Facing off against Luffy was an immense show of strength, and his growth after that was even more so. It's very much inline with the card.

9 The Hermit/Sanji - The Hermit doesn't *want* to be alone, but the Hermit often needs it. Not the kind of alone that means shoving everyone away, the kind of alone that sits on the bow of the ship and contemplates their sense of self. Sanji has a lot of work to do in this, but I also think he's a character who has done a LOT of it long before he met Zeff.

10 Wheel of Fortune/The whole bloody series honestly - The Wheel Turns, and things change. This card means whatever is going on now, isn't going to be going on tomorrow. The good times will end, the bad times won't last forever. Everything changes. Appreciate the good while you can, and weather the hard times knowing they won't last.

11 Justice/ - Hrm.

12 The Hanged Man/Trafalgar Law - Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing at all. Sometimes you need to just Stop and Think about things. Maybe Law over thinks sometimes (he certainly has the whole "sacrifice oneself for the greater good" vibe going one, which can also be a thing for this card.)

13 Death/The Going Merry - Change is inevitable, and while the Wheel is about day to day changes, Death is about BIG changes. Changes that don't leave you the same as they found you. Changes that can break you if you don't roll with them - Changes you CANNOT outrun.

14 Temperance/Several Characters- Temperance is about balance, a lot like Justice, but with Temperance there is emotion that you don't find in Justice. My knee jerky reaction places several characters here - Robin's mom, Nami's mom, and Rosinante (my apologies for being bad with names and not wanting to break from this to look them up.) These people all had a strong connection to temperance - doing what needed done, not because of logic or justice, but because of love.

15 The Devil/Doflamingo - The Devil is about choice. Generally it's about negative choices and not positive ones, because it's about the chains that bind us to the things that pull us down. It's about crumbling and failing because we chose to do things the way we did. I liken Doffy to this, since we often don't see what it is we're doing wrong, and with the wrong people around us, well, we just keep going headlong into the wrong path. (Doffy isn't the devil in this card, Trebol could be, but Doffy is definitely the one in chains).

16 The Tower/Marine ford - I don't know that I really need to say anything else ^^;

17 The Star/Silvers Rayleigh - Thinking back to how this is story of journey for the Fool, Rayleigh is the perfect character to follow Marine Ford. He didn't heal Luffy like Law did, he didn't heal him like how Jinbei did. He just offered hope - a chance to recover from the rough and harsh lessons that came before him, and make sure Luffy could continue forward on his own.

18 The Moon/Momonosuke - Wary, anxious - the moon is about intuition, but not "oh I knew they were gonna kiss" kinds of intuition. It's about knowing something is wrong, something is looming, something is unavoidable and you don't know WHY you're nervous and afraid (or maybe you have an inkling) you just are. The moon is fear of the unknown, and it's not a card that has any answers most of the time - you just have to get through it.

19 The Sun/Sabo - It's his memories coming back, him meeting Luffy in the Coliseum, eating the fruit, holding that newspaper to his chest and smiling like a DOOF when he sees his little brother is doing well. It wasn't necessarily all rainbows, but there's clarity there - everything is illuminated, no shadows. Shit hurt for a while, but he can see the good in it all.

20 Judgement/Portgas D. Ace - This card isn't so much about wiping the slate clean, as it is realizing that all your flaws, scars, mistakes, etc. have helped make you who you are. It's about accepting your flaws and either incorporating them, or improving yourself to lessen them. Honestly the most heart breaking thing about Ace is how he was doing this, he just never got the chance to see it through.

21 The World/Joy Boy - I'll just leave this as this for now. ^_^

To me Debbie will always be the little girl who never got that princess party she dreamt of, hence a pink smokey cat-eye, finished with pink glitter highlights.

MANDY

I am leaning into Season 6 Mandy, with a classic black liquid liner cat-eye and a matt grey smokey eyeshadow. Understated and classy, while still being playful and sexy.

KEVIN

There is nothing more durable than a smokey eye in brown, blended out to skin colour - one of my favourite make ups for a rainy day at the farm, because it will still look pretty decent by the end. Solid and dependable, just like Kevin!

IAN

I’m normally a big fan of contrast colours, but if you’re a redhead with pretty green eyes then you lean into that green as hard as you can!! We’ve got two shades of green (light on the lid, dark in the crease), blended out into a shimmery gold, green eyeliner on the lower lid, and black eyeliner & mascara on the upper.

MICKEY

And finally we have the OG black kohl smokey eye - perfect for our little trash panda! You want your black eyeshadow to be highly pigmented, and don’t be afraid to get a bit messy with it. You’re a Milkovich, not a Chanel model! On top of the black eyeshadow we have some black glitter, for depth. And of course it wouldn’t be a Mickey look without some characterful brows and chewed pink lips!!

And then of course post Season 4 we get Mickey ‘I Just Want Everyone Here To Know I’m Fucking Gay’ Milkovich, the bravest little thug muffin on the South Side, deserving a special rainbow smokey eye look in his honour!

Some make up ramblings behind the cut, for anyone interested :)

I get most of my make up from the cheap counter at whatever pharmacy I'm in - teen brands are great for cheap yet decent quality items! However I do have some preference in terms of performance for certain things. I love my EcoTools make up brushes. You can pick up a pack of 5 brushes for a tenner, but if you can find the set of 2 double headed brushes - Eye Enhancing Duo Brush Set - you've got all you need for a smokey eye look in two handy brushes! I've been using mine for years with no bristle loss or decrease in quality. Very very happy with those! Eyeshadow - I'm a slut for a MAC pallet. They're not all as good as each other, and occasionally you get an eyeshadow that barely leaves any pigment on your skin and it's infuriating! But 80% of their colours are great. And you can buy colours individually on their website / at a MAC make up counter, and then you can fit them into a non branded make up pallet you pick up at amazon or your local pharmacy for a couple of quid, allowing you to put together you're perfect personal pallet! Barry M does little pots of loose pigment in ALL the colours of the rainbow, called Dazzle Dust, and they are amazing!! Please do take a few days of experimenting if you are not used to working with loose pigment, as it can get MESSY lol A good trick is to go heavy on powder foundation under your eye prior to starting your eye make up, so any loose pigment catches on a layer of powder that you can then just brush off with a big powder brush.

I also have little pots of glitter (purchased from a craft store) in all the colours of the rainbow and a small bottle of stage make up adhesive. You will find there's a million different glitter adhesive gels and fix it sprays, some of them may be amazing, however many of them are going to work the exact same way as a simple application of some vaseline would. Depending on the effect I want I either use a small paint brush to very precisely apply glue and glitter pieces (glitter eyeliner, cut brows with glitter lines, individual glitter dots), or alternatively I use a lip gloss or similar sticky clear substance and sprinkle the glitter (for glitter blush, glitter temples etc.)

I have bought many a mascara promising many a thing (longer, thicker, fuller, rounder, magic in some way or other) and honestly, I have never been able to tell the difference between their performances. As long as it doesn't clump and go tacky after a week of use, it's fine by me.

For eyeliners - I have a few choice colours in MAC, but for the essentials I love essence cosmetics, which are one of the teen brands I mentioned above. Their liquid liner pens (24ever ink liner for example) are some of the best I've ever used, and they're like £2.50 each. Otherwise, I like eye pencils you can sharpen for the exact precision I desire, not the waxy sticks inside a plastic case that you operate like a mechanical pencil. Those are a big no no.

Arranging new sheets and pillows on the bed made you feel so refreshed and clean, almost resetting the bedroom to how it was before. You let out a small sigh of relief and fell back onto the bed, opening your eyes just a little. The bandaged body you saw in the mirrors above, struck you otherwise. Things could never go back to “normal” after this, as if any of it was normal to begin with. Now, you knew how Ren felt, and he had permanently altered your flesh in a way that hurt to even look at. Tying on a robe, you sat on the edge of the bed, deep in thought and recounting the previous days. Subtly, a familiar pain crept up your back and settled below your stomach. Shit… you thought, your head perking up and your feet moving you towards the restroom. Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit! You flung open the door and sat down on the toilet, dreading what you knew would come next. “Owww, fuck!!” A familiar burning sensation settled in as you relieved yourself, making you scream in pain. Really, with how much Ren was fucking you, and how much you held it in the past week, you shouldn’t be surprised you had come down with another uti. “Oh God, why? Why now when Ren’s go-" You reached up and touched your neck. Ren had forgotten to put your collar back on, and with your phone smashed, you had no way of contacting him. The pain was already too great for you to even think about leaving the toilet, but you needed to look for antibiotics.

Ren’s day was full of running around and cleaning up other people’s messes. Someone had left some product alone too long among spare supplies, including loose ropes. Surprisingly, they had used the rope on themselves instead of trying to escape. This wouldn’t have been an issue for Ren to deal with, if it wasn’t for the fact someone had already bought them. This client also wasn’t one for understanding mistakes, and would only talk to Ren. Even though they had a strong and professional relationship, it still took a massive amount of ass kissing to get his client to not have an absolute meltdown. After the situation was handled, Ren figured he would make his way home, but decided he had some other unfinished business to attend to. He walked through the halls of the bunker till he found who he was looking for. “Kangaroo!” He stood at the doorway to the streaming room, catching his employee off guard. Kangaroo turned to face him, standing firm and preparing himself for what was about to come. Fox walked towards him, keeping a straight face while eyeing him down. “You’re back early, Fox! Welcome baaack, how are thiiings?” Kangaroo tried keeping a calm, pleasant face, but he was a nervous wreck behind his facade. He remembered what had happened to an employee previously in his shoes, and he got only more anxious. Fox noticed this, but didn’t comment. “I’m glad I caught you today, Kangaroo, I wanted to discuss what happened at my apartment a few days ago.” Kangaroo gulped, his composure slipping from him. “No, you’re not fired, and no, you’re not even in trouble, I’m…” Fox took a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose and running his fingers through his hair. “...I’m sorry for how I behaved a few days ago. You did exactly as you were told, and had it not been for my mania, maybe things this week would have turned out differently.” He had a far off look in his eyes, and Kangaroo noticed. “How is…is she-” “She’s fine. Though damaged inside and out, but she’ll recover.” Kangaroo let out a sigh of relief, knowing that if you didn’t make it, he likely wouldn’t have either. He was put in charge of making sure you were alright while Fox was in his rut, but clearly didn’t succeed. He avoided asking more questions, as generosity like this was rare from his boss. Fox was also eager to leave and get back to his Pet, as although his rut was over, he still craved being by your side.

“Honey, I’m home!” Ren sang as he walked through the front door, expecting his Pet to come running to him. His Pet never came, so he walked through the apartment, looking for her. The kitchen was still a mess, but empty, making him upset. So I leave for work, feeling like shit, and she can’t even clean the kitchen? Ren was getting angry as he reached the living room, which again was still empty. Finally, the bedroom. The bed was made, which he was pleased to see, but still no you. He finally opened the bathroom door and found you hunched over, still on the toilet. You slowly raised your head to greet him, hugging the robe closer around yourself. “Hi, Honey, I-I couldn’t get the kitchen cleaned today, I’m so sorry, I just-” Ren quickly knelt beside you, placing a hand on your lower back. ”What’s wrong, Pet? Why are you in here like this, have you been here all day?" You looked down again, gently nodding your head. “Almost, I got the bed clean, but I think I have an…infection…” It had been years since you had to explain yourself like this to anyone other than a doctor, and the shame was already setting in. Not to mention, the drain of being in pain all day had wiped you out mentally. It didn’t take long for Ren to put together what you were saying, and wrapped his arms around you. “I’m sorry you’re sick, Pet. I figured something like this would happen...” He reached into his pocket and pulled out an orange bottle full of antibiotics. He started explaining how much to take, but you had tuned him out. You could only stare at him, tears welling up in your eyes. “I also got some birth control pills, and a PlanB. Cause you know, I don’t want any…Pet? Are you in there?” A tear fell down your cheek and you brought Ren into a hug. You sobbed into his shoulder, hysterically ranting about missing and appreciating him. “I-I missed you, I missed you all w-week! I missed this and h-how thoughtful you a-a-always are. You’re always th-thiking of me, and I love it, and I love you! And-" You sobbing cut you off as you finally said what you had been thinking for months at that point. You held him tighter, and Ren only matched you grip, although trying to gently shush your now incoherent blubbering. 

After you had calmed down, Ren got you to take an antibiotic. You finally admitted to inserting your nexplanon bar back into your shoulder two days before. Ren wasn’t thrilled to hear about how easily you disobeyed him, but was relieved to know there was one less thing to worry about. He got you cup after cup of water, and when you were finally feeling better, he ordered some takeout. Sushi, one of your favorites, and something that reminded you of your first time meeting. Cuddling on the couch, eating and watching an anime Ren picked out. You were all too happy to be snuggled up with Ren again, despite thinking you would be sick of him by now. As you bit into your tuna roll, you rested your head against Ren’s shoulder. “You know I meant it, right? The thing I said earlier?” Ren smiled, turned to you, and planted a kiss on your forehead. “I know, Pet, I know.”

It’s 2 am and I have a fucking 8 am class. Let me kms cause I dunno why it was such a great idea to sign up for an early class and tell me why it’s almost a full class?? I actually cannot relate to the lecture thing (sorry lol) bc I’m online and thankfully we don’t have lectures, just modules. But I do remember when I did go on campus for a week I could not for the life of me keep myself awake during lectures (I also decided to be studious and booked the 8AM classes like a fool). But uni is a struggle no matter what, like I JUST did an exam where it just randomly submitted in the middle of me taking it and now I’m waiting for my prof to email me back about the issue while praying that he’s merciful enough not to just fail me immediately 🤠 so yeah, here’s to self-inflicted suffering ✨

Ongoing Series - Thai

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 12fin - Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun in the fight sequences. I’m very happy for them. I’m not surprised they shot Khem and Chart. A little shocked it wasn’t also Yai, TBH.

I found this final episode rushed. According to rumors, The Sign was originally slated to be 14 eps, and it probably should’ve been. And I don’t say that often about Thai BL. But we all knew it was getting too bloated for its britches, so I'm not surprised they fumbled the ending. For me personally, it just wasn't that bad. It was fine and I was fine with it.

Tho, Billy does not look good with facial fur, messes up those gorgeous angles.

I was ultimately amused that the solution to the mythology thread was simply to talk to the river god and persuaded him to give up... off screen. It felt very old school wuxia. Or like Aeschylus or something. I did adore the stinger, Saint was basically like “I want wings too”. 

FINAL THOUGHTS

This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it. Was it a crazy unhinged mess +1 roll for damage? Yes. Yes it was. Did it manage to hold all those tangled threads together? No it did not. Was it also a charming, sexy, engaging, non-stop piece of entertainment? Sure thing. I think this show is basically my KinnPorsche, and frankly I’ve been chasing that dragon naga since KP aired. Is it perfect? No. But it was balls to the wall FUN and that gets a 9/10 from me.

I'm thinking of doing a full recap review (partly because I have so many great screen shots.)

Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube grey) ep 10-11 of 12 - Since this series is following the yaoi so closely, I knew these were the separation eps. (Also I knew with would be a soft non-doom ep 11, Japan rarerly does these.) I like that they used it to show improve communication and development in all relationships, but, frankly, TayNew are just best when they are TayNew together on screen. So yeah. Let’s keep them back together, please?

Meanwhile, TayNew gifted us a gorgeous loving sweet sex scene. Thanks OG for doing us a solid. 

I wanna add, it sure is fun to see New play as soft and vulnerable character, I feel like he hasn’t done that since SOTUS.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 12fin - 1/3 of this is a sweet romance about a student doctor falling in love with a student chef, and the rest of it is utter dross. Look the OffGun bits were GREAT.. In fact, I think they’re better AS A PAIR in this show than in any of their other BLS. And I'm a hard sell on any OffGun being better than PickRome. Saying that, how can I review a show where I could only tolerate 1/3 of it? Because I didn’t like any other aspect of this show, no other pairs and no other plots. That gives me: 9/10 for the OffGun bits, 5/10 for everything else. Frankly it probably should be an 8 but I gotta go with my gut and it's upset about this so 7/10. Sorry boys. It’s GMMTV’s fault. Your heart was in this show, mine wasn’t. 

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 4 of 12 - These two are so good at making heart eyes at each other. It’s ridiculous. They don’t need any cartoon images or noises. Moot crush but "I wanna flirt and court more" is so flipping awesome. I love this for them… and us. 

1000 Years Old ep 2 of 12 - It’s very silly and we have been gifted with the dorkiest vampire ever. But... the smell thing makes me so happy. And I like that the vamp uses chan/nai or tan = v old fashioned. Nahlak. I love our ghost girl. Did you notice she wasn’t in the room with them but they left an empty chair for her? Also nahlak.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Perfect Propose (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - Kai was pretty much just “you're a workaholic but I basically married you whether you like it or not.” SMOOCH. What can I say? I'm a sucker for this dynamic.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - How is this show so cute? How do they both love and hurt each other so much. They are both just scared of loosing each other. Gah.

Unknown (Taiwan Sat Youku YouTube) 1 of 12 eps - Youku dropped the first ep to their YouTube channel but I doubt we can expect that to continue. Still, it was nice to be able to watch it in a convenient way. I enjoyed it. But I am cautious about it. Of course this is possibly two of my favorite tropes of all time (stepbrothers or a variation + hyung romance). So I’m looking forward to the romantic thread, but from the gritty style, it feels a lot more like a Taiwanese short. Which means it could go very dark and may not end happy. 

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 7 of 10 - I just don’t know if the main couple should be a couple. But when they finally get around to talking to each other, they sure are lovely. Also how great is it to see a uke initiate a kiss? Even if it’s not a very good kiss. 

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 2 of 8 - I am still not sure about this one. I am not contesting its quality, just saying it’s not for me. Also I’m not wild about what amounts to basically a redo of everything that already happened in the first episode from a different perspective. I know it’s a tall order with Japan, but I would like (when it’s a short series) for each new installment to actually move the plot (such as it is) along in someway. Am I asking too much?

You're woken up by the sweet scent of freshly made pancakes drenched in syrupy and a touch of butter right on the top, just the way you like it coming your way closer and closer salivating your mouth wet, heavily desiring for those pancakes to fill in your rumbling morning tummy, you slowly open your eyes awake with a smile stay put on your lips only to find your boyfriend Cedric shirtless wearing one of his favorite grey sweatpants resting low on his hips showing off just how well he's taken care of his body. His defined abs that look to be shaped by the Greek Gods themselves and his sharp-cut Adonis belt sticking out caught your eyes right away, leaving them glued down there as he made his way to your side of the bed with a breakfast tray floating itself up in front of him.

"Happy Birthday to you" Cedric begins to sing in a cheerful tone, "Happy birthday to you...Happy birthday dear Y/N... Happy birthday my love" he finished the song, setting the breakfast tray right by the nightstand with his wand leaving you to giggle away at his adorable singing voice. Cedric placed himself on the edge of the bed right by your foot tucking a loose piece of hair behind your messy yet sexy bedhead, "Happy birthday my love, I hope you like your breakfast in bed, mom taught me how to make homemade pancakes the other day so I could surprise you" He explained softly traveling his hand once form your ear down to caressing your cheek, his hands were warm and gentle how could you be so lucky you thought.

You gave him your best, most happiest smile at his efforts before saying "Thank you so much for all this love, you didn't need to do any of this at all... a good morning kiss would have sufficed" you giggle quietly once more, "Now come here and give me my kiss before I dive into those delicious looking pancakes" you demanded and just like that Cedric charming yet toothy smile appears as he scoots closer to your face and leaned in to place his soft silky lips into yours. The kiss was fiery and needy even after 5 month of dating Cedric passion for you has never run our of fuel, he's willing to do anything to make you happy and although the both of you haven't actually announce the L words to each other Cedric feels that he's ready and it's the perfect time to do so.

After what felt like hours Cedric managed to get up from the bed, grab onto your waist, and pick your small frame off the bed and into his arm all without breaking the kiss walking off into another space inside your shared bedroom, finally, he stops walking, he's take you out to the balcony of your shared bedroom. The cold morning air slithers in over the both of you, cooling down the burning and passionate make-out that both of you have been doing for the last 5 minutes. You break the kiss slowly only to find Cedric smiling happily, you haven't seen this smile since you agreed to be his girlfriend or when you agreed to move in with him, it was indeed a special smile, you smile sweetly back at him, as he stares into your eyes getting lost in their beautiful color before he finally said "I love you" you eyes opened wide at his words, and he managed to skip your heartbeat about 3 times faster he said, he finally said it, you couldn't imagine being happier then you are at this moment.

"I love you too Cedric" you blurted before you giggle leaving him to smile and spin your around in his arm, joyful that the both of you have finally reached yet another chapter in your relationship journey, and after a while of giggling and him spinning you around, he lands you down on the balcony making sure you're safe and sound before he reached for his pocket. "I've got a surprise for you princess, you're going to love it... close your eyes" he blurted out before pulling out a red velvet box while you did as you were told to close your eyes. Cedric opened the box gently and take out its content which was an elegant Ruby necklace laced into a gold chain, he close the box and puts it back into his pocket before unclasping the necklace and walking right behind you to put it on.

He placed the necklace gently on your neck and clasp it closed before telling you to slowly open your eyes, you did as you were told giggling in the process only to find a shining red stone sitting on your neck. You've always talked about how you wanted a ruby necklace such as this because it reminds you of your grandmother who possesses the same looking one that she would wear all the time before she passed away not that long ago. You couldn't contain your happiness and even your eyes started to well up with happy tears but you turned around to face him, got up on your tippy toes, and placed your arms behind his neck to pull him down for yet another thank you and passionate a kiss, as he rests both his hand on your waist leaving a great start to your birthday.

Knights and Pawns seems to be both a safe place and a dangerous place for omegas at the same time. There's omega-only schools where Alphas are not allowed to attend, and societal rules that claim omegas should not be harmed, as it is deeply frowned upon to do so. Many omegas live sheltered, and dare I say, spoiled lives (like Daniel). They're petted and adored, and allowed to indulge in non-traditional gender norms.

And yet...

On the flip side, there's omegas, immigrant ones, sold so easily into the sex trade. Omegas seem to be a way of barter in situations like Daniel's. "Kitties" are lusted over and Alphas seem to barely contain themselves around them. Even married omegas, like Daniel, aren't always safe from either their spouses, or even rogue Alphas who hit on them (and might do more if they could get away with it).

Overall it seems like a deeply sensual, sexy little world, and omegas are both treated as the madonna and the whore all at once.

Omegas are super rare, and physically vastly less powerful than Alphas and a lot of betas, when the omega is female moreso than males, but still. And though generally 20% of the polulation is born omega, only 5 to 10% are omegas born to non rich parents. (Usually because somehow Alphas with a recessive omega gene mated a beta with a recessive omega gene, or two betas with an omega gene mated, or a young unmated Alpha knocked up a poor omega sex worker). So that's only 10% poorer omegas for 40% Alphas straight through all layers of society. Which means only one in four Alphas can even meet an omega in their social circle when they're not at the very top, and even 10% of the elite Alphas cannot mate an omega in their circle. Now as we know in our world when the male female ratio gets seriously out of whack, men go to pretty extreme lengths to find a wife. Mail order brides? Totally a thing. The Alpha omega ratio is definitely unbalanced in my world. So poor omegas may get sold away to rich Alphas, or simply sold! Young poor omega sex workers are a goldmine, especially prostituted to young Alphas with no prospect of mating one ever. And what happens to those pups, hm? Does someone intervene? Do they get adopted out? Can a kitty keep their puppies and do the omega ones get prostituted out like their mothers? Wherever he came from, Johnny made a run for it. Which is not to say that all poorer parents sell their omega pups. Far from it. And some marry regular Alpha or beta partners from their circle of life. But parents will try to marry them 'up', which decreases the already scarce dating pool even further. It's really ugly, there's whole mob schemes to get families from all over the world to the US with an omega pup and then to pressure them into bartering their child away. That's what Daniel is fighting: to get to those omegas and pretty girls - Alphas are not immune to beta pretty girls - and set him up in his mob. Yes, still mob, but with Church backing. These kitties are properly mated and certainly not only to gangsters, but simply to decent Alphas and if anyone comes for their pups looking to make them into sex workers they can expect a visit from the likes of Louie LaRusso, John Kreese, Mike Barnes or Dutch, who we all know is feral. Or indeed Sister George who has a very mean right hook.

So on the one hand, you have omegas who come from generations of rich Alpha/omega parents, Daniel, who wasn't born quite there but has money and would be very attractive to the 10% rich Alphas who couldn't marry an omega acquaintance, and Johnny, who fled his sex worker mother after presenting rather late and was taken under the wing of John and Betsy Kreese.

Finishing school omegas? Set for life. Working class omegas mating their childhood sweetheart? Poor, but very cherished. Kitties that got bartered away or kidnapped? Yeah, that's ugly. Remember Anna, Terry's drunken revenge side piece? Got caught up in a shootout, the Alpha cop involved took her home, and that was that. ok i have a 10 image limit and some of these are multi-image jokes so i’ll try to distill these as best i can. also these jokes are all from i think chapter 4 and later, where i really flourished my sense of humor more

1. marina’s high school crush/bff sharkwanda being a highly contentious contestant on a spoof of top model

this is specifically a spoof of the early seasons, which usually had an assessment within the first 2 or 3 episodes, including a weigh in. as much as i loved trashy tv, i always hated these moments so i thought it would be funny to have a literal shark and to have her be weighed against mostly average-sized humanoids because it would be ridiculous for anyone to expect a healthy shark to weigh the same amount as a human.

there were a couple other layers to this: george idolizing her as a strong, independent woman. george’s brother freaking out because sharkwanda just ate a man on camera and no one’s overly bothered by this. george chastising him for not realizing it was obviously fake/over dramatized for the ratings (and not examining that then this moment of “self empowerment” would also be fake). and then also i named her after a fish named wanda. except she’s a shark named wanda. she’s also the most beautiful and popular girl in the world and she wins her season and becomes a very successful model.

2. the tinsley family thanksgiving outfits. actually their themed outfits in general. i think shit like this is super cute and funny. i also just enjoy writing siblings who rib each other lovingly.

also the part of this where george’s mom has three eyes (she’s psychic) and her dad has no eyes, so her brother has two eyes and for all intents and purposes looks human, but he is a full blooded monster. early on i had some ideas for an off shoot chapter about eli and his struggles with his identity (being a monster but not looking like one and not feeling at home in either community), but it got scrapped for time and also because it felt like too close a parallel to mixed race people who pass as white and that’s not my story to tell.

3. sharkwanda’s cover (up) girl ad campaign during the superb owl half time show. some of this stuff was a bit on the nose, but there’s a line about sharkwanda finally having makeup that doesn’t melt off her face like hot cheese that i still like

4. this multi-strip joke where franny’s dad pulls a turkey out of a hat. just read it there’s nothing to explain lol

5. basically every part of the magic shop scene, but especially the part where percy meets franny’s dad for the first time during a very tense situation and franny’s dad is wearing a skeleton (this is a reference to ranma 1/2). and then also percy sits and there’s a whoopee cushion. it’s incredibly awkward and not exactly haha funny, but it simultaneously cuts and adds to the tension in a way that is very monsterpop.

6. human!franny getting ben a dog toy as his secret santa gift (he doesn’t own a dog) and then dropping it and then it making a horrific, shrill squeak when it bounces

7. the whole situation with chadler, his horrible christmas outfit, the marshmallow gun, and him taking sexy santa ben as prisoner.

8. ben, killed by glitter, soon to be avenged by his crush comrade (or not)

9. george being gifted a framed painting of a photo of herself, asleep during class, which she later carries into an actual museum and gets in trouble for because a guard thinks she stole a piece of art

10. the brotebook

this has been very long but i hope u enjoyed it
