Here’s Why Having Underground Wine Cellars Just Makes Sense!
Do you have a basement at your home waiting to be turned into something incredible? Then why not consider investing in custom underground wine cellars?
Cool basements make the perfect place for wine cellars. They have the correct temperature, environment, lack of light and enough security to keep your costly drinks safe. On top of that, the rising popularity of wine cellars has made underground cellars way more affordable than before.
Still, if you are not sure about turning the empty basement into a wine heaven, continue reading, and the following section will help you make up your mind!
Here’s Why Having Underground Wine Cellars Just Makes Sense!
If you are a wine enthusiast with an empty space under the floor, then there’s no sense in wasting it on pests and spiderwebs.
So, here are five reasons why you should definitely turn your basement space into a wine cellar.
1. It’s nice and cool
Wines don’t enjoy warm temperatures like us. In fact, heat is one of the most common reasons for wines going bad prematurely. The ideal temperature for white wines is generally between 7-12°C, while for red wines, it is between 12-18°C. Temperatures higher than 21°C can cook up your wine, ruining its flavours and aromas. And custom underground wine cellars are perfect for creating the ideal temperature for wine.
2. And it also provides the perfect amount of moisture
There’s a reason why experts often advise against storing your wine in the refrigerator if you intend to cellar them. If you keep the drinks at freezing temperature for too long, it will cause the corks to dry out. As a consequence, air will seep into the bottles, tainting the wine. Also, if the liquid freezes, it can expand and push out the cork. Hence, most wine collectors prefer investing in underground cellar construction.
3. Always consistent
With our moody climate, it can be challenging to maintain a consistent climate in your wine room. Wines crave consistency in temperature and humidity. And when they don’t receive it, the quality starts to degrade. And the rapid contraction and expansion of the liquid leaves the cork loose and lets oxygen in. It can oxidise the liquid and spoil all your cellaring dreams. Luckily, you can avoid this with a simple DIY underground wine cellar with a temperature-controlling system and well-insulated walls and doors.
4. Away from light and vibration
Natural light and harsh modern lights can degrade the quality of wine and lead to premature ageing of the drink. It is one of the reasons people use coloured glasses for wine cellars. However, with your basement walls preventing much of the natural light, you can go easier on doors and enclosures. And for visibility, you can install any high-quality white LED lights.
5. It’s a no-sweat project
Turning your basement space into a cellar is the easiest way to make your wine-collecting dreams come true. It offers the perfect humidity level, temperature and light for your wines to rest and age. On top of that, by utilising the basement, you will not have to sacrifice your living space for the cellar. An already well-built basement will also reduce your cost and hassle of building a wine cellar separately.
Bottom Line
Underground wine cellars are not just affordable, but the dedicated space makes it easier to build custom cellars. Creating a cellar in your hallway or kitchen can expose the drinks to the dangers of light, temperature fluctuations and vibration. You will not have to stress about any of that with underground spiral cellars.

She enjoys looking at the little humans who come to visit, especially a floofy haired boy who comes every week with his father….” An injured Belle is captured and brought to Gold and Milah’s aquarium. Gold is a marine biologist dedicated to protecting the creatures there, Milah wants to turn a profit, and their son has his own ideas about how to befriend a mermaid.

Current Chapter: 21/? Chapter Summary: Milah is having a - well, she is having a day™.
Chapter 21: Bullet
Well, she thought, fingers drumming on the steering wheel of her MB. That was unexpected. He had finally managed to impress her – and Milah wasn’t sure how she felt about that.
Had she chosen to play this by his rules? Yes. Had she expected him to fall for it? Absolutely.
But this? This hadn’t been part of the plan.
Some brainless idiot honked and she started, putting her turn signal on and making a right before the traffic light turned red again.
This wasn’t how she’d pictured it. This had come out of nowhere. And trouble was, it had her second guessing – him, herself, and most inconveniently, the plan. And really, Milah thought, what did that say about her?
Perhaps Mother was right.
Just what Mother would say about this though, Milah didn’t have to guess. Mother would have a fit (a deadly cold and silent one). She could picture it now. And the picture made something stir inside of her, rear its sleepy head, and scream at the top of its lungs: defiance.
So what?!
So what if she had slept with her husband? So what if she had enjoyed it?
That wasn’t a crime, was it? And it was none of Mother’s business anyway. She could still carry on as planned, couldn’t she? One surprise shag in the middle of the night didn't change a single thing.
Or did it?
Milah shifted into 5th and hit the gas pedal. She heard the transmission purr as the speedometer quickly registered just slightly over the limit. Whatever. On top of everything, she was on the verge of being late, and she still had quite a bit of ground to cover and an important errand to run before her lunch meeting.
She’d make it work. Just like she always did.
Milah played with the gas and felt the power of the twin turbo engine. Over four thousand pounds worth of German engineering yielded to her touch and leapt forwards. This was a car built to sneer at speed limits and she welcomed the familiar tug at her middle as she leaned back against soft leather.
Her jet black Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG sped past the town sign and the deep green of the fir trees swallowed them whole as it shot down the highway, travelling north.
***
Sitting at the table she’d been shown to by one of the Château’s waiters, Milah glanced down at the silver cutlery, checking her own reflection in the back of a spoon. She had touched up her lipstick in the car, and couldn’t detect so much as a single curl out of place. Good. She was ready and had come prepared. And, miraculously, she was a couple minutes early, which meant she was just on time.
Her business date, however, was not.
After maybe ten more minutes of catching her breath and tight-lipped smiling at waiting staff, the woman she was supposed to meet finally appeared, strolling in behind a young waitress who was making a beeline for her table.
Milah got to her feet with a cool smile.
“Mrs. Montgomery-Gold. How do you do?” The head of the Mills Foundation said, holding out her hand with a smile like she wasn’t late.
“How do you do?”
The two of them sat down, and Cora Mills took the liberty of ordering sparkling water, wine, grilled octopus with bell pepper-compote and olive tapenade, and a mixed salad for the both of them. Like it was 1950.
If it were 1950, Milah mused, she would be the woman in this scenario. While she had no qualms with her gender, she understood the power move perfectly well.
“The Foundation hopes you are satisfied with our product?”
Milah felt her cheeks color.
“Yes, thank you. It met all expectations,” she gave back in what she hoped was a similar no-nonsense tone. The expression ‘exceeded all expectations’ still rolled around on her tongue, but she swallowed it back forcefully. Milah Montgomery would not roll over that easily.
“Wonderful.” Cora Mills signaled a passing waitress and quietly spoke to the young girl in a hushed voice. The poor thing promptly turned beet-red and scurried off to remedy whatever complaint the older woman had whispered in her mortified ear. “We can see from your reports that the mermaid’s health is improving, is that correct?”
Milah thought about the files in her bag under the table. Decided against it. “Yes. Medical is confident the mermaid is responding well to treatment and care.”
“She’s ready for Phase Two then, I presume.”
“Yes.”
“Excellent.”
Their drinks arrived. Milah could almost smell the fear on the waiter who poured their water. Cora Mills had to be a regular here.
“The mermaid is physically ready for Phase Two,” She took a sip of her sparkling water. In the back of her mind, a small part of her wondered about Murchadh’s reaction – once she broke the news to him. Perhaps she shouldn’t? “However, our knowledge of her species’ reproductive system is still limited. To commence Phase Two immediately seems unwise.”
Cora Mills fixed her with a stern look. “Since I don’t have any of my people on the ground –”
Milah had made damn sure of that. No Foundation reps would get to meddle in affairs at her aquarium. She had drawn a hard line in the sand, so to speak. A necessary precaution.
“I have to trust your judgement and recommendation on the matter.” Her smile was steel; no warmth in her brown eyes as she leaned a little closer. “However, I do trust a Montgomery’s word.”
Milah bowed her head, taking the thinly veiled threat as a compliment.
The food arrived and both women reached for their napkins at the exact same moment.
Silence fell.
This wasn’t the last Milah would be hearing about granting the Foundation more – unrestricted – access, oh no, but she was ready for that fight when it came knocking again.
Grilled octopus wasn’t as bad as it sounded.
A thought best kept to herself and not shared with either husband or son. Swallowing, Milah lowered her fork and knife and discreetly pushed the remainder of the dead sea-creature towards a piece of blackened bread on her plate. She turned her attention to her salad instead.
She was certain, Cora Mills wouldn’t have connived an imperfection such as a slightly burned slice of Ciabatta. Neither would her mother. But Milah was her own woman, and burnt bread was the least of her problems right now.
“It’s a shame. Montgomery born and bred were the best we ever had.” Cora Mills swirled her Cabernet Sauvignon. Her lips were the same color as her drink: bold red.
The damn dogs.
Milah finished chewing her food in silence before dabbing at the corners of her mouth with her napkin. She was no stranger to proper manners. She had been raised to never forget them after all.
“Thank you.” She reached for her own wine and inclined her head, before taking a calculated sip.
“I was very sorry to hear about your father’s passing.”
Milah crossed and uncrossed her legs under the table. “He was a good man and will be missed.”
“Give your mother my best,” Cora Mills said with an expression that made Milah straighten her shoulders. “How is Ethel?”
“Very well, thank you.”
Sitting ramrod-straight, Milah bit the inside of her cheek. Going into this meeting she had been prepared for a lot of things, but discussing her late father or her mother – her private life, her family – with a perfect stranger, a business partner, a person like Cora Mills, left an unpleasant aftertaste in her mouth.
What was the woman playing at?
Cora Mills’ lips curved into a smile. It wasn’t a good one.
“I’ve had our specialists draw up a list of all data still required,” she said, her tone no longer fake-cordial, but all business again. “To determine the right course of action for Phase Two.” She cleared her throat. “Once we have your ‘go ahead’ for the venture, of course.”
Milah nodded, eying the folders sliding towards her side of the table.
“Highly confidential,” Cora Mill’s voice was lowered unnecessarily. The closest tables were empty and staff seemed to be giving a wide berth to theirs. “You understand, I’m sure.”
“Of course.” Milah put a hand on the papers.
“Lovely.” With a glance at her watch, Cora Mills got to her feet and Milah hastened to do the same. “If you’ll excuse me. Other pressing matters to attend to.” They shook hands again. “Pleasure working with you.”
“We’ll be in touch.”
Without so much as a glance back at Milah or their table, Cora Mills turned on her heels to leave.
After a moment’s hesitation, Milah sat back down. She felt strangely dissatisfied, an unpleasant feeling creeping up her spine. She wasn’t used to being made to feel small and inadequate. Those days were long behind her and she had no desire to relive them.
With a small sigh, she looked at her own watch and deduced she had time to satisfy her curiosity at least, and take a look at what was inside those folders on the table, before heading back home.
Once plates and drinks had been cleared, she poured over the new materials – while the young waitress kept refilling the coffee she had ordered. Black, two sugars.
***
It had gotten later. Later than planned, anyway.
Main Street was busier now than when she’d left it. People carrying shopping bags up and down the street, greeting friends, sitting down for a post-work coffee or an early dinner.
As she unlocked the car, the sun had sunk low enough to tint the rooftops a soft orange and red; the wet cobblestone glistened a damp golden yellow. It was still warm enough, she supposed, but you could already feel a fall night coming in the air.
She eased open the driver’s-side door and, unceremoniously, threw her bag into the back.
Time to go home.
Milah shivered as she sank onto cold leather and removed the sunglasses from her hair to shove them in the glove compartment. She rubbed the bridge of her nose and leaned back in her seat, her hands coming up to pull the pins from her updo and let her curls fall loose.
Dropping the hair pins onto the dashboard, her eyes flickered to the small paper bag on the passenger seat, and she sighed, hand resting on the keys in the ignition.
One more thing.
Feeling a heavy tiredness wash over her, she ran her fingers through her hair and rested her forehead against the smooth steering wheel, linking her hands behind her head.
What had she gotten herself into?
If the people of Storybrooke could see her now, she’d be the talk of the town come morning. Discretion and privacy were non-existent in the town’s collective vocabulary.
Just one of the reasons, Milah was glad to have swapped small-town-gossip for big-city-anonymity for the day. Out here, no one cared who she was or what she was doing with her life. In the city, she could simply walk into a drug store, any drug store, and get what she needed to do what she had to.
The damn day had filled her with a strange mix of nostalgia, regret, and guilt.
Throat closing up and chest tight, she turned in her seat and emptied the contents of the inconspicuous paper bag out onto the passenger seat: a small water bottle, Advil, paracetamol, some Pepto-Bismol, a pack of tissues, glow-in-the-dark band-aids with Star Wars insignia for Bae, Plan B, and a pack of gum – cherry flavored, the kind that made the largest bubbles without popping and didn’t taste like old tire 15 seconds in.
Milah let out a breath.
Here went nothing.
Popping the small white pill into her mouth, she waited for a few seconds, then swallowed, and reached for the water bottle to wash it down properly.
She tossed the packaging into the footwell and turned the keys.
The engine caught, she put the car in gear, hit the gas, and the engine flooded and died on her.
“Arghhh, fuck.” She swore under her breath, her neck prickling as the expletive rolled off her tongue like a boulder.
“Come on!”
She turned the key again; the engine caught. She made a gentler attempt on the gas pedal this time and coaxed a steady purring sound from the engine. Good car. She reversed and smoothed into traffic.
They rolled past storefronts and restaurants at crawling speed.
Oh, the joys of evening rush hour. Bullshit on the radio and morons on the road. Milah fiddled with the buttons on the radio, flipping through five or six different channels, before calling it quits and feeding it a CD.
Tracy Chapman’s deep and charismatic vocals filled the small space, and Milah found herself humming along, mouthing her favorite parts.
Traffic stopped at a red light and she opened the window slightly. A burst of cold air pushed inside. Drops of water splattered onto the windshield. The red light changed colors and Milah hit the gas pedal, dirt and pebbles kicking up behind the rear tires.
She already felt the migraine coming on, pressure building behind her eyes and temples, and clenched her jaw, gripping the wheel a little tighter.
9 and 3 o'clock. Hands at 9 and 3 o'clock.

21 Things To Do in Santiago: Chile’s Cool Capital
Surrounded by the Andes mountains, Santiago has to be one of the most beautiful capital cities on the planet. It’s also a very fun place to visit, with a rich history, vibrant culture, and great tourism infrastructure.
If you’re ready to plan a big trip to Chile for hiking in Patagonia or exploring the Atacama Desert, be sure you dedicate at least a few days to taking in all that the capital city has to offer.
With a few days in Santiago, you can enjoy the sights, go trekking in the Andes, cycle to vineyards for wine tastings, explore local markets, partake in the city’s fun nightlife, and much more. These are just some of the many awesome things to do in Santiago Chile.
Read on for recommendations on what to do in Santiago, including plenty of useful info to help you plan the perfect trip there.
1. Explore the Plaza de Armas
The best place to begin your exploration of the Chilean capital is the Plaza de Armas. As is the case with most major cities in South America, this “Square of Weapons” was designed to be the city centre. Santiago’s main plaza has been just that since the city was founded back in 1541.
Back in colonial times, you would find the gallows at the heart of the Plaza de Armas. Thankfully, those have been replaced by a fountain celebrating Simon Bolivar. The plaza is full of Chilean palm trees and benches, making it a popular place to relax and socialize during the day.
Walking around the plaza, you might find people engaged in a heated game of chess, busting a move with some group dancing, or just laughing hysterically at a clown show. Exploring the Plaza de Armas is definitely one of the most entertaining things to do in Santiago!
Surrounding the square are several historical and cultural landmarks, such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, Royal Court Palace, and the Central Post Office. You could easily spend an entire day just taking in all the sights in and around the plaza. Get directions to the Plaza de Armas by checking the map here.
2. Take a Free Walking Tour
When you’re new in a city, it’s a great idea to take advantage of the free walking tours on offer. Not only do you get to learn something about the place from a local, but you’ll also make new friends in the process. This is the best thing to do when you first arrive in Santiago.
In Santiago, the best free walking tours are run by Tours 4 Tips. They run two different tours every day of the week. Their 10AM Santiago offbeat tour checks out a market and the cemetery, while their 3PM tour covers some of the highlights of the Chilean capital. Both tours last around 3 hours and cover a few kilometers.
The guides are super friendly and knowledgable, and they’re always happy to point you in the right direction with recommendations on where to eat, shop, and party. They’re also really easy to find, as they all dress like Waldo from the popular children’s books.
3. Climb Santa Lucia Hill
Climbing Santa Lucia Hill is definitely one of the best things to do in Santiago Chile. This large park is located in the city centre just a few blocks away from the Plaza de Armas and is a great place to spend an afternoon.
There’s actually quite a bit of history behind this park. First of all, this hill is the remnant of a 15 million-year-old volcano. It was also here that the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia founded the city of Santiago in 1541.
Upon entering the park, you’ll be greeted by the gorgeous Neptune Fountain. From here you can follow the system of trails and stone staircases to the top of the hill. Along the way, you’ll pass by the Castillo Hidalgo, which was built in 1816 to protect the city.
Keep on going until you reach the stunning viewpoint at the very top of the hill. If you visit on a clear day, you’ll get some fantastic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. The park is free to visit and is open every day from 9AM to 7PM. You can find it on the map here.
4. Go Museum Hopping
As the capital city of Chile, it should come as no surprise that Santiago is full of excellent museums. You’ll definitely want to make sure you carve out some time to visit a few while you’re in town.
A great place to start on your museum-hopping journey is the Museum of National History. It’s located in the historic Royal Court Palace, which once served as the seat of government. After checking out the beautiful exterior, head inside to explore the many exhibits.
While you’re there, be sure to climb the clock tower for an unbeatable view of the Plaza de Armas. The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 9AM to 6PM and is free to visit.
Another can’t-miss museum in Santiago is the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. This museum commemorates the many victims of human rights violations during the brutal regime of Augusto Pinochet between 1973 and 1990.
It opened in 2010 to mark the bicentennial of Chile’s independence and serves as an important reminder of the country’s recent dark past. It’s open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10AM to 7PM and is also free to visit. You can find the museum here on the map.
5. Eat Seafood in the Central Market
Without a doubt, one of the tastiest things to do in Santiago is eating seafood in Mercado Central. This bustling market has been in business since way back in 1872 and continues to be a popular place to shop and eat.
Thanks to its long coastline and booming fishing industry, Chile is home to a vast array of delicious seafood. Santiago’s Central Market is a bustling place every day of the week. Locals come in the morning to do their shopping, while tourists frequent the market in the afternoon to dine in the many restaurants.
The seafood here is all super fresh and delicious, whether you order a plate of ceviche, king crab, or clams au gratin. It’s a bit touristy, sure, but it’s a nice place to experience at least once on your visit.
The Central Market is open every day, but the vendors and restaurants keep different hours. You’ll want to get there early in the morning if you want to see the market at its busiest and be sure to get there before 5 if you hope to get a table and eat. You can find the market on the map here.
6. Take a Bicycle Tour
Santiago may be a sprawling capital city, but it’s still a very bike-friendly place. There are dedicated bike lanes everywhere and it’s very easy to find a bike for rent. Exploring the city by bike is easily one of the top things to do in Santiago Chile.
While you could just rent a bike and go off on your own, you’ll get a lot more out of it and have way more fun on a tour. The folks at Huaso Bike Tours have several excellent options for you to explore Santiago on two wheels.
They have half-day tours where you take in the highlights of Santiago and visit several markets. You can also choose to do a cultural bike tour, or evening tour.
Their 3-hour tour in the city costs $56 per person, with a guide and equipment included. Click here to learn more about the bike tours in Santiago.
7. Drink Pisco
Pisco is a high-proof brandy that’s made from fermented grape juice. It’s definitely the most popular booze in Chile and Peru as well, so you know that trying some of it has to make our list of the best things to do in Santiago.
There’s an ongoing debate between Chile and Peru about who created pisco and who does it the best, but we’re not going to get into that heated argument here. I will instead point you in the direction of an excellent establishment that celebrates the pisco of both countries!
This awesome Santiago bar-restaurant has to have one of the coolest names and concepts ever. It’s called Chipe Libre – Républica Independiente del Pisco. The “Chipe” is a combination of Chile and Peru, and the name translates to the Independent Republic of Pisco.
Rather than argue over who made it first and who does it better, this place serves up pisco from both countries. What an awesome idea! Go ahead and order a flight to sample the best of both Chilean and Peruvian pisco, or just stick with the classic Pisco Sour cocktail. You can find Chipe Libre on the map and get directions here.
8. Explore the Art Scene
Art lovers will definitely want to pay a visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts. The beautiful building it’s housed in dates back to 1910 and was a commemoration of the centennial of Chilean independence. It’s also free and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10AM to 6:45PM. You can find the museum and get directions here.
If galleries are more your scene than museums, you’ve got plenty of options for those as well. A popular place to visit is the Centro Cultural Matucana 100, an art centre housed in an old government warehouse. In addition to the spacious art gallery, they also show films and have concerts here. Find them on the map here.
Finally, you’ll want to be sure to check out some street art in Santiago as well. While it may not be as much of a street art haven as nearby Valparaiso, there are still plenty of awesome murals in Santiago. Speaking of Valpo, it’s one of the best places to ring in the New Year in all of South America. We started our year-long party with New Year’s Eve in Valparaiso and had an absolute blast!
You can go off in search of street art on your own, or sign up for a tour with Urban Adventure. Their tour visits the Open Sky Museum in the San Miguel district of Santiago. Tours last 3.5 hours and cost about $60 per person, including transportation and a typical Chilean tea time snack.
9. See a Show
Santiago is a very cultured city, so you’ve got lots of great options when it comes to the performing arts. Seeing a show at one of the city’s many venues is one of the top things to do in Santiago Chile.
Certainly, the classiest place to see a show in Santiago is the Teatro Municipal (Municipal Theatre). This beautiful neo-classical theatre was built in 1857 and hosts performances of opera, choir, and ballet.
You can check their website to see showtimes and ticket prices, but be warned that it’s only in Spanish. Alternatively, just drop by the box office and see what’s playing while you’re in town. Tickets are as cheap as $3, so why not? You can get directions and find the theatre on the map here.
10. Spend a Day on San Cristobal Hill
San Cristobal Hill makes just about every list of the top things to do in Santiago, and for good reason. From high up here, you’re treated to some incredible panoramic views of the city.
There’s an easy way and a hard way to get to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. The easy way is hopping in the cable car, which is a nice scenic ride across the park. It’s open on Mondays from 1:30-5:30PM and Tuesday-Sunday from 11:30AM-5:30PM. Tickets cost about $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.
Of course, you can always just hoof it! The hike takes about an hour depending on how fast you move. However you decide to get there, your ultimate goal is to reach the sanctuary dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Outside, you’ll find a 22-meter statue of the Virgin Mary.
The hill is a part of the larger Metropolitan Park, which is the largest in the city. In addition to the sanctuary, there’s also a Japanese Garden, and even a few pools that are open in the summertime.

11. Tour the Home of Pablo Neruda
In the Bellavista neighborhood of Santiago, you’ll find La Chascona. Once home to the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, it’s now a museum that’s open to the public.
Neruda had this home built for his third wife, Matilde Urrutia. Actually, she was his secret lover when he started work on the house. He called her La Chascona (tangle-haired woman) for her wavy red hair.
Inside the museum, you’ll find a wide variety of quirky artifacts that Neruda collected. Of course, there’s plenty of artwork as well, including a famous portrait of the house’s namesake created by Neruda’s friend Diego Rivera.
One tricky thing about visiting La Chascona is that it’s only open on a first-come, first-serve basis. They open at 10AM from Tuesday to Sunday, so it’s best to get there early to guarantee your spot. Tickets cost about $10 and include an audio guide. Check the location on the map here. Another option is to join a day tour which includes a winery visit and the home of Pablo Neruda.
12. Head to the Top of Sky Costanera
If you want to take in the views of Santiago from above, don’t miss out on a trip to Sky Costanera. At 300 meters, their observatory is the highest in all of Latin America.
In just two minutes, the elevator takes you to the 360-degree observatory. Try to time your visit so you can watch the sunset and see the city light up. It’s definitely one of the coolest things to do in Santiago Chile. Don’t miss this attraction! Get your tickets here.
It’s open every day from 10AM-10PM with the last elevator rides going up at 9. Tickets cost $22 for adults ($18 when booked online here) and $15 for kids ages 4-12. It’s located right on the Mapocoho River, which you can see on the map here.
13. Eat a Completo With a View
I realize not everyone is going to want to fork over $20+ to head to the top of the Sky Costanera tower. It’s alright – I totally understand. I rarely buy those tickets but feel like they’re still good items to include on a list like this.
If you’re on a budget, you can just head to the food court in the Costanera Centre Mall. They have an outdoor seating area that still has a great view, even if it isn’t the tallest in Latin America.
While you’re here, you may as well try a local favourite – a completo. This Chilean hot dog comes loaded with chopped tomatoes, avocado, sauerkraut, and a big ole’ glob of mayonnaise. One of these and some fries will fill you up for a while and only cost you a couple of bucks!
14. Check Out La Moneda
Washington D.C. has the White House, London has Buckingham Palace, and Santiago has La Moneda. Currently the office of Chile’s president, it was once the official mint of the country. Hence the name, which means “the coin” in Spanish.
This beautiful neoclassical building was designed by Italian architect Joaquín Toesca and completed in 1805. It was badly damaged in 1973 during the military coup.
The Chilean air force bombed the palace when then-president Salvador Allende refused to leave. He died later that day, which remains controversial to this day. Some believe it was an assassination and not a suicide, as the official story goes.
You can take a tour of La Moneda but you need to sign up at least seven days in advance. You can find the form that you need to fill out in English here. If you can’t get on a tour, you should still come to check out the changing of the guard ceremony. It happens every other day (odd-numbered days in odd-numbered months, even in even) at 10AM or 11AM on Saturdays.
15. Get Out in the Mountains
Santiago is surrounded by the Andes Mountains, so why not plan for a day trip out there while you’re in town? In the warmer months, you can head out to the mountains to go enjoy a nice day of hiking, biking, or even horseback riding.
Some of the most popular spots near Santiago for hiking include Provincia, Manquehue, and Pochoco. If you want to do a little bit of hiking, with a side of hot springs, check out this awesome tour of the Maipo Canyon and Volcano. For a stunning 8 kilometer hike in the canyon, click here. It can be tricky trying to get yourself to trailheads on public transportation, so if you don’t plan on renting a car you’re better off just signing up for a tour.
Once winter rolls around, the snow-capped Andes are the place to be if you enjoy skiing. There are several ski resorts within a 60-90 minute drive. Many of the resorts run shuttles that leave between 8-9AM and return between 4-5PM. Check out El Colorado, La Parva, Valle Nevado or Portillo.
If you made it all the way to Chile, chances are you’re planning on heading to Patagonia. Be sure to read this huge guide to trekking and camping on the famous “O” circuit in Torres del Paine. If you’re not sure what to pack, we’ve got you covered with that as well!
16. Ice Cream at Emporio La Rosa
I’m really not a huge fan of sweets, so you know a place has got to be good if I’m recommending ice cream as one of the top things to do in Santiago! Emporio La Rosa is a local favourite, which you’ll notice right away from the long queue out the door. Don’t worry, it moves fast and is well worth the short wait.
My amiga from the city took us to this place when we first got to town, and we liked it so much we came back for my wife’s birthday a few weeks later. They have a bunch of different ice cream flavours as well as several different cakes and various sweets. I also tried their empanadas and they were fantastic!
There’s an outdoor seating area and there are often wandering musicians who stop to serenade the crowd. It’s a nice place to go for a snack, a coffee, and some people watching. You can find them on the map here.
17. Tour a Vineyard
Chile is known for making excellent wine, as the climate here is perfect for harvesting grapes. Visiting a vineyard easily makes the cut on this list of the best things to do in Santiago.
The great news is you don’t even have to travel very far out of the city centre to visit a vineyard. Cousiño Macul is located about 15km from the central part of Santiago and can be easily reached by cab or even a local bus.
This vineyard has been operating since way back in 1856. It’s still run by the Cousiño family and is currently run by the sixth generation. They definitely know what they’re doing when it comes to making wine here!
They have a few options for tours at the vineyard, with the regular tour costing about $22 and the premium version going for $38. This gets you the tour, a tasting of six wines, a souvenir glass and corkscrew, and even a cheese & fruit plate. They have four tours a day during the week, two on Saturday, and are closed on Sunday. You can find them on the map here.
For those of you who want to learn more about the popular Concha y Toro (the main exporter of wines from South America) and Unduragga brands of wine, don’t miss a visit to their vineyards. From $22 for a visit with tastings.
18. Experience a Local Festival
There are all sorts of festivals going on in Santiago throughout the year. The Chilean capital has festivals for literature, film, music, dance, food, and more. Here’s just a taste of what’s on tap for festivals in Santiago.
In January, Santiago a Mil is a performing-arts festival where over 1,000 shows take place across the city. Best of all, many of them are in parks and plazas and totally free to attend!
Another great choice is the Providencia Jazz Festival. It takes place over a weekend in January in the Parque de las Esculturas and is free, but you’ll have to grab tickets in advance as it’s very popular.
Movie lovers may want to come to Santiago in August for the International Film Festival. Several different cinemas across the city show independent films from Chile and beyond and has grown into one of the most prestigious film festivals in the region.
19. Day Trip to Cajon del Maipo
While there are plenty of excellent things to do in Santiago, you definitely need to carve out some time for day trips out to the natural wonders that surround the city. A trip to Cajon del Maipo is a great choice for spending a day out in nature.
This canyon in the Andes is a beautiful place to visit with captivating scenery all around. There are some great trekking opportunities here of varying difficulty, including one that brings you to a high-altitude reservoir 2,500 meters above sea level.
After a tough hike, there’s nothing better than soaking in some natural hot springs, and that’s exactly what you can do out here! Other activities available include horseback riding, ziplining, and whitewater rafting.
Your best bet for exploring all that Cajon del Maipo has to offer is hopping on a tour out of Santiago. There are plenty of options, including a tour that includes a bit of trekking and a visit to the hot springs from around $55 per person.
20. Take a Cooking Class
Since you’re going to eat plenty of delicious Chilean food in Santiago, why not learn how to cook some of it yourself? There are plenty of cooking classes available in Santiago, so get in the kitchen and get cooking!
Uncorked is a popular choice for a cooking class in Santiago. It starts with visits to some of the city’s markets to pick up some fresh ingredients, and you’ll then head into the kitchen to whip up some Chilean classics. Classes cost $95 per person and include some Chilean wines.
Another option is Chile Cooks, which runs tours every day at 10AM. You’ll cook dishes such as pastel de choclo, empanadas, or cazuela while enjoying a Pisco Sour and some Chilean wines. Their classes are a bit cheaper as well, at $80 per person.
21. Hang Out in Bellavista
Located between the Mapocho River and San Cristobal Hill, Bellavista is Santiago’s bohemian quarter and a fun place to hang out day or night. You can combine a visit here with a trip to the hill and Neruda’s house to make for one exciting day in the capital.
During the day, you can enjoy a stroll around the area taking in the street art, perusing the markets, and stopping to relax in one of the many cafes. Once night falls, Bellavista really comes to life as locals and tourists flock to the countless restaurants, bars, and clubs.
Now You Know What To Do in Santiago, Chile!
That’s a wrap for this list of the top things to do in Santiago Chile. As you can see, the Chilean capital really packs a punch when it comes to activities on offer. Here you can hike in the Andes one day and cycle through a historic vineyard the next. How cool is that?!
Santiago is definitely one of the best cities to visit in South America, and it’s the perfect jumping-off point for adventures to places like Patagonia and the Atacama Desert. With its wealth of activities and big-city amenities, Santiago is a solid choice for a home base while exploring the region.

2019 Porsche Cayenne First Test: How Much Audi Can a Porsche Take?
The first-generation Porsche Cayenne—you remember, the vehicle that purists said would be the death knell for Stuttgart—rode on a platform engineered by Porsche, and it was incredible. Honest-to-goodness sporty handling and mountain goat–like off-road-ability. The similar-vintage first-gen Volkswagen Touareg was built on the same platform, and I can’t remember driving a machine that felt more overengineered. Like, the parking brake pedal had a damper on it! Porsche also built the platform for the second-generation Cayenne, an SUV we liked so much that we named it our 2012 SUV of the Year.
However, the third-generation Porsche Cayenne arriving this year is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform, same as the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, and Q8, as well as the VW Touareg (and China-only Phideon sedan), Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus. My question then: What’s so Porsche about it?
Certainly not the powertrain. Audi’s 3.0-liter single-turbo V-6, good for 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, powers the base Cayenne. What’s more, that motor is mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic, curiously the only traditional torque-converter automatic Porsche sells. The 911, Boxster, Cayman, Panamera, and even the Audi MLB-platformed Macan all use a version of Porsche’s own PDK dual-clutch transmissions (though the Macan uses an Audi DSG box).
Porsche states that it decided to go with a “real” automatic because it’s better for towing. I’ll call BS on that; the new Cayenne uses the eight-speed auto because all the other SUVs built on MLB Evo use the ZF eight-speed. In other words, there’s no dual-clutch transmission that would fit. Case closed. A “hang-on transfer case” shuttles power to the front axle, but don’t let that nomenclature lead you to expect low-range gearing.
The new Cayenne features grille shutters that close for increased fuel economy and open when extra cooling is needed. All Cayennes now have staggered wheels; this base SUV has 285-section fronts and fatty-fat 315 rears. I find that impressive.
Porsche claims the body-in-white is 47 percent aluminum and that the third-gen Cayenne should weigh 4,377 pounds, less than the vehicle it replaces. Well, we weighed one, and it clocked in at 4,676, just about 300 pounds more than Porsche claims. We never weighed a second-generation base Cayenne; we did weigh a second-gen Cayenne S, though (4,876 pounds), and the previous S had a V-8. The new Cayenne S features another Audi engine, the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6, the same as in the most excellent RS 5. Point being, despite Porsche’s weight-saving efforts (like a lithium-ion starter battery that’s 22 pounds lighter than before) the Cayenne is big-boned.
Big-priced, too. The Moonlight Blue Metallic ($800, please and thank you) Cayenne we tested has a base price of $66,750. Not crazy but certainly on the high end of the price spectrum. The Volkswagen Group will probably mark me for death (or at least overcook my next rib-eye) for pointing this out, but the Audi Q7 3.0T—which is, again, the same platform—starts at $60,945. But the Audi has a third row and essentially the same power (329 hp versus the Porsche’s 335; 325 lb-ft of torque versus 332), plus what I consider to be a nicer interior. As this Cayenne is optioned—and there are seven options—the price swells to $81,650.
One of those options is the $4,160 adaptive air suspension, which includes Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). I initially assumed this would be a must-have feature, as Porsche’s three-chamber air springs promise a plusher ride in Comfort and a sportier ride in Sport; PASM even gives you a second sporty mode, Sport Plus, which makes things even stiffer and racier.
That may all be true, but I drove a Cayenne with the standard steel springs and dampers, and I thought that version had a sweeter ride. I even liked the handling better over the damp, twisting, climbing, plunging, and redwood-lined roads of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Counties—the location in the heart of Northern California wine country Porsche picked to launch the new Cayenne. I found the air suspenders to be a bit vague in Comfort and a bit artificial feeling in the aggressive modes. The other problem for Porsche is that Mercedes just launched the new GLE—a direct competitor—and that SUV’s fast-acting hydraulic E-Active Body Control damping system is a game changer.
However, I do recommend taking the money you would have spent on the air springs and spending it instead on Porsche’s new PSCB brakes (Porsche Surface Coated Brakes). Porsche takes the massive (16.3 inches up front) rotors from the PCCBs (the carbon-ceramic stoppers) and makes them from steel but coats them with tungsten carbide. This not only helps with stopping power but—working with special new pads—also keeps the wheels clean.
A little-known fact in the car biz is that on all those initial quality surveys, German carmakers are routinely dinged for brake dust. (They also used to be hit for their single, central door-lock button, but they “fixed” that.) Porsche claims the PSCBs cut down on brake dust by 90 percent.
I don’t care about that (wash your car, slob), but I do care about how the 10-piston calipers feel grabbing those big, fat stoppers: in a word, excellent. In a couple more: Compared to the standard brakes, the PSCBs feel three times as effective, and the majority of the stopping action is concentrated in the top of the pedal, just how I like it. Too racy for parking at the mall? Probably, but hey, it’s a Porsche, ain’t it? At $3,490, the PSCBs are cheaper than the air suspension, as well as the (gulp) $9,080 carbon brakes. Cheaper to replace, too.
At this point you might be wondering what I was thinking after I drove the 2019 Cayenne down to Los Angeles. There’s no fatal flaw, but I’m having an awful hard time understanding what’s so Porsche about it. Why not just call it the Audi Q6?
Then we took the Cayenne to the test track, and, well, now I get it. After several laps around our figure eight, MotorTrend ride and handling guru Kim Reynolds recorded a best time of 25 seconds flat. To give you some perspective, that’s as quick as a current Volkswagen GTI, a 2011 Cayenne Turbo, a 2009 911 Carrera S, and a 2007 Cayman. Impressive, no?
Porsche claims that with the Sport Chrono package, the 2019 Cayenne will hit 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Our hot shoe Chris Walton did the deed in 5.1 seconds before running through the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds at 100.7 mph, the same as both a Honda Civic Type R and Subaru WRX. That’s good company for a heavy crossover. Stopping from 60 mph happened in 105 feet, which is outstanding. And we tested the stock brakes! Oh yeah, that platform-sharing Audi Q7? It does 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, the quarter mile in 14.0 seconds, 60 to 0 mph in 121 feet, and our figure eight in 26.4 seconds. The Porsche dusts it.
No, these are not crazy numbers, but they’re quite good for a base midsize SUV. Need more oomph? Porsche’s model line has you much more than covered.
In the “final” summary, Porsche may have just nailed its target audience by building a nice-looking, comfy-riding, practical, spacious SUV with a seriously desirable badge. Plus, when your know-it-all car guy or gal friend says, “It’s just an Audi,” you can rest assured in the knowledge that, as Han Solo so prophetically said, “She’s got it where it counts.” Or you can just floor it and crank the wheel.

10 Extraordinary Superyachts Unveiled in 2017
Home » Luxury Lists » 10 Extraordinary Superyachts Unveiled in 2017
Before you start gawking at these mesmerizing superyachts, you should head over to Youtube and hit that play button on one of Rod Steward’s most famous songs, Sailing. It always relaxes me, it puts me in a calm state of mind and in the mood for another hard day at work.
We all have our favorite songs, that’s for sure, but I’m pretty sure that sailing aboard one of these incredible yachts is far more enjoyable. The top 10 list below should provide everyone with some very interesting choices. Here we go!
The Italian masters from Tankoa Yachts have teamed up earlier this year with the Rome-based luxury design company Exclusiva Design, to work on a mind-blowing 72-meter superyacht dubbed as the Progetto Bolide Concept. Inspired by the 20th-century movement of futurism, this sleek vessel features a high-tech wine cellar with its own integrated wi-fi system that even helps passengers locate their favorite bottle.
That’s an unusual feature, but we’re pretty sure it might prove it handy; the massive owner’s suite is also worth a mention, spreading across two decks, with a drawing room, gym and spa, and a master bedroom featuring a skylight. Fully customizable, this vessel is powered by twin CAT engines that propel it through the waters at 18 knots or allow it to cruise at 12.5 knots.
Unveiled by Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts, this blacked-out beauty was appropriately dubbed as the Gotham Project. The ravishing superyacht concept before you shows off a menacing, yet seductive, Batman-inspired exterior design, with an intelligent deck layout and all kinds of luxurious amenities inside-out.
If you thought the exterior is really impressive, things become even more alluring on the inside, thanks to opulent materials, luxurious fabrics and a welcoming color theme. Dark woods and onyx tones, contrasting with crisp beige and white colors, will get anyone smiling. Up to ten guests may enjoy the cool entertainment areas aboard, while twin 2,000 hp MTU engines take them on the journey of a lifetime.
The renowned Italian design company Pininfarina announced its first collaboration with the brilliant yacht builders at Rossinavi, and this is the result of their joint effort. The breathtaking AUREA superyacht was inspired by the lavish lifestyle of her owner, which is why it shows off three stunning exterior decks and the largest beach club in its class.
You’re charmed, I’m sure, but this elegant vessel also packs two generous swimming pools – among many other things. If you have enough money in your bank account, you might also get Rossinavi and Pininfarina to work together on your very own, personalized superyacht.
London-based design studio Squared MK is the name behind this eye catching vessel. Concept NYX measures 75 meters and shows off unique proportions and a drool-inducing color theme. Able to accommodate as many as 14 guests onboard, this vessel comes with a private deck for its lucky owner, with a balcony, Jacuzzi, a folding terrace and a bar, all set to make any day aboard unforgettable.
Concept NYX will also boast a spa with a magical underwater view, generous exterior areas, as well as a large enclosed swimming pool. The 12-meter performance powerboat, a 9.5-metre tender, two 3.85-metre tenders, four jet skis and a two-person submarine explorer are nothing but delicious cherries on top of this great concept.
Trust us, the jaw dropping MESD 100 superyacht is even more incredible than you see it in this photo. Designed to show off a super skeek and very elegant profile, MESD 100 manages to blend comfortable interiors with generous exterior entertainment areas – did we mention the 7-meter pool and an exposed beach club?
This lovely beach club benefits from several social areas, with a cool bar, sea-view lounges, as well as a fully equipped fitness center all set to spoil the passengers. The sundeck can be used in multiple ways, but relaxation on board is a priority. An awesome concept from Norwegian designer Marius Skjolde.
Imagined by the renowned Italian yacht designer Federico Fiorentino for Rossinavi, the 180-foot Project Zephyr was actually inspired by those timeless 1960s automotive designs.
It’s built around a Fast Displacement hull from Van Oossanen Naval Architects and packs 16V 4000 MTU engines that allow it to achieve a top speed of 32 knots, although a cruising speed of 12 knots promises a transatlantic range of 3,540 nautical miles.
One of the best features of this yacht is the 990-square-foot beach area, covering the entire aft deck, with a 300-square-foot raised terrace and an 18-foot swimming pool, with transparent edges and exceptional views included. Have I said too much?
Unveiled earlier this year, the wonderful Wally 93 promises to be an incredible cruiser-racer – the ideal vessel for someone who’s already a keen racing yachtsman. Thanks to its ultra light construction, with high modulus uni directional carbon fiber, and CNC female carbon fiber, this sailing yacht is able to brag about some amazing performances and beautiful looks, of course.
The Wally 93 Racer also benefits from plenty of living areas too, although everything on board is performance-oriented. It will sail with up to 16 knots of wind, and easily exceed the true wind speed. One thing’s for sure: this yacht is a whole new experience.
If you don’t know this yet, the Dynamiq GTT 115 was designed by Porsche, which is why it is able to sail at 21 knots, while showing off incredible details inside-out – feel free to configure and order your very own right now. The all-aluminum wonder before you features an exclusive stabilization system and a round-bilge hull, with a price tag to match.
Boasting with Porsche DNA, such as the signature Targa-style mullions and transom styling, this superyacht also displays Saddle brown and Luxor beige leather, with carbon fiber detailing, Macassar ebony and Sahara Noir marble throughout its interiors. Two 1,650-hp MAN V12 diesel engines promise a maximum cruising range of 3,400 nautical miles.
Nature is a futuristic 120 meter-long yacht concept, imagined by Sinot Yacht Design for people who dream about enjoying luxury on the open seas, without feeling the guilt or remorse of damaging our planet.
Featuring lush garden and observatory decks, with state-of-the-art climate control technology, this stunning vessel will provide passengers with memorable views and experiences on the open waters.
Amenities aboard include eight luxurious state and VIP rooms and a spectacular owner’s suite, plus many other bespoke features, like a cool spa deck, with a lovely gym and swimming pool. We’re sold!
The future is here, and it looks absolutely incredible with Se77antasette. Designed by the renowned Italian shipyard Benetti, this breathtaking yacht concept was described as an innovative and revolutionary vessel, inspired by the natural marine environment. It’s an outrageous example of what a superyacht should look like in the near future and we totally love it!
Featuring adaptable spaces, open balconies, and terraces, with an observatory deck promising 360-degree views over the horizon, this ravishing vessel has plenty going for it. There’s also an eco friendly diesel-electric propulsion system, with five variable speed generators and a single C18 CAT engine, that will take this beauty to top speeds of 19 knots. But you could always go 5,000 nm if you slow down at 12 knots.

Best Tech Gifts 2017
It’s that time again! That’s right, time to frantically search for the perfect, high-tech and downright impressive tech gifts for the loved ones in your life. Don’t let shopping get you down this year. 2017 has been an excellent year for product launches, making your holiday shopping easier than ever before. Here are the best tech gifts you should be giving this year:
Apple Watch 3 GPS + Cellular, $399+
The newly-released Apple Watch 3 may look like the first and second models, but this little device packs a punch. Now, those with cellular enabled watches can leave their phones at home. The Apple Watch 3 with GPS and cellular enables users to track their workouts, text message, make and accept calls, and stream music from any location with a cellular connection – no phones attached.
Wemo Mini Smart Plugs, $29.99
Do you know someone who’s too lazy to get out of bed and turn off the lamp downstairs? Or someone who hates coming home to a dark house but doesn’t want to leave lights on all day? Smart outlets are the perfect solution for a multitude of electronic-related inconveniences. Simply plug them into the wall, plug in your appliance and have Alexa, Google Assistant or the Wemo app handle the rest.
Anti-theft Laptop Backpack, $38.99
A new era of backpacks has arrived, and for high-school and college students, as well as traveling business professionals, they’re a lifesaver. This backpack from Mark Ryden is water resistant, carries up to a 15.6” laptop, and contains multiple pockets and straps for optimal organization. It even comes with a USB charging port for charging mobile devices on the run.
Apple AirPods, $159
The Apple AirPods are finally available for purchase, and users apparently love them. They boast a 4.5 out of 5-star rating with more than 700 reviews on the Apple website. With AirPods, there are no wires, making them the most discreet, quality earbud option available. When using AirPods, audio automatically plays when they’re placed in your ears and pauses when they’re taken out. Thanks to Siri, a double tap on one earbud allows users to adjust the volume, change the song, make a call, and even get directions.
19 Crimes Wine, $9.99 – $33.99
Although this wine is inexpensive, it is insanely cool. 19 Crimes Wine bottles feature a photo of a real English convict sentenced to live on the uninhabited continent we now call Australia. As if that wasn’t interesting enough, the 19 Crimes team created an augmented reality app to accompany their bottles. This app allows you to point your phone’s camera toward the convicts to watch them move about as they tell you about their crime.
Moon Lamp, $29
These 3D printed moon lamps make beautiful night lights and talking pieces for amateur astronomers. The lunar globe can be set to one of three different colors and features a realistic design sprinkled with craters. These lamps are portable, rechargeable and mesmerizing.
Lego Boost Creative Toolbox, $159
Want to be sure your kid stays at the top of his technological game? The Lego Creative Toolbox allows kids to build their very own interactive robot from the ground up. Once the robot is built, kids then learn how to code certain actions into the robot’s capabilities by using a tablet and the robot’s color, distance and tilt sensors.
Nintendo Super NES Game System, $79
Last year, the Super NES was nearly impossible to track down. This year, you can scoop one up from your local Best Buy for only $79. This gift is great for kids and nostalgic adults, alike. While it looks exactly like the original Nintendo Super NES, it’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. The system comes with two classic controllers and 21 pre-loaded games, including Mario Kart, Super Mario World, the Legend of Zelda and the first release of Star Fox 2.
Furbo Treat-Tossing Dog Camera, $249
The Furbo dog camera is an unbeatable gift for the dog-lover in your life. Furbo offers a full HD camera, two-way audio for talking to pets from anywhere, bark-sensing and treat tossing. Furbo can also be controlled by Amazon Alexa. For example, users can say things like, “Alexa, have Furbo toss a treat to Murphy every hour.”
Skullcandy Bluetooth Wireless Earbuds, $33
These Skullcandy wireless headphones are some of the most reasonably-priced Bluetooth headphones on the market. While they may not sound as nice as the Apple Beats X, they certainly get the job done! These earbuds feature 6 hours of rechargeable battery life and the ability to take phone calls – no strings attached. Awesome for people who tend to lose things and kids who can’t be trusted with expensive gadgets.
Apple iPhone X, $999+
If you want to be the most cutting-edge gift-giver around, surprise your loved one with the newly released iPhone X. The iPhone X features an edge-to-edge display, facial recognition unlocking, wireless charging, an impressively capable dual-lens camera and a beautiful UI. For the iOS user in your life, this is definitely the best tech gift 2017!
Google Pixel 2, $649
The Google Pixel 2 is a stunning phone for Android users, featuring a 12.2 mp camera, 6” pOLED screen and enhanced security to protect users from malware attacks. It can be purchased unlocked or for use with Verizon.
Amazon Echo Show, $229
For those who already use previous Amazon Echo devices, the Echo Show is a great home addition. With the Echo Show, users can enjoy videos, browse Audible audiobooks, view weather forecasts and monitor video cameras, all hands-free. The Echo Show also features Dolby room-filling speakers for excellent sound quality.

Funky Town—Sunday Chats (2-19-17)
Bleh.
I’m in a Funk.
Funk-Junk-Dunk
I don’t know what’s going on exactly but I’ve found myself in a total funk this week. I have been known to see some gaming ruts before where games just don’t bring me that much joy anymore. This is the opposite of that. I’m playing so many goddamn video games you guys. You have no idea. I played like, 45 hours of Tales of Berseria this week. It was crazy. And unhealthy.
But creatively I’ve been falling behind. Maybe it’s the stress of planning stuff that’s coming. To give you an idea, we just finally got everything booked for PAX East. Flights, hotel rooms: everything is booked and ready. Also, there is a new site launch coming from Irrational Passions. Redesigning the site, which has been a long time coming, for sure. I think our current Wordpress theme is totally fine, but it’s a bit outdated at this point. But hey, that’s fine, it’s definitely gotten the job done. As a simple blog with mainly written articles and podcast posts, it’s been a great theme for us. But it’s a bit restricted, and it doesn’t give us too much room to highlight big, sweeping articles across the site, like guest columns and features.
In conjunction with that, we have a new logo coming, which I’m proud to give you all a preview of today. A massive thank you to Roger Pokorny for doing the base design for this.
This is not final, not yet, but it’s gonna be real close to this, so I’m happy to share it out.
But I have been falling behind on all my creative ventures. I’ve been writing everyday, of course, but I have this Alex Talks I have been sitting on for weeks and weeks now, and I still haven’t edited it. I just can’t get myself to bring it together. On top of that, I need to really start figuring out how I am going to frame this new version of Alex Talks, Case Study, but I haven’t built the digital set or logo for that yet either.
Ugh.
I’m sorry to everyone who follows me. I’ve been off playing games and planning for PAX, but since I left school I’ve been in a weird emotional place. I need to get to work and get stuff done, I just haven’t been in the right place to do that yet. I’m sorry for that, and I promise new, cool stuff is coming soon.
PAX East 2017
Happy to remind everyone that we’re gonna be at PAX East. Everyone everywhere should be excited for this, because we are going to take PAX East by STORM. I will be there, alongside Tony Horvath, Danny Juarez, Logan Wilkinson, and Jarrett Green, all representing IrrationalPassions.com. You should be excited for the content we’ll be posting there, because it’s gonna be killer.
A new design is coming to IrrationalPassions.com to coincide with that, so look forward to that sometime in early March, please god hopefully.
What’s on Tap
Nioh
I’ve been playing a good chunk more of Nioh, and I continue to dig it.
There seem to be a lot more situations where you just get caught in an enemy or boss’ too-long-combo that kills you instantly without fail. That sucks? Like, is that fun? I personally don’t think so. It happens a lot in this game.
Otherwise, I’ve found the built-in loot sorting systems and they work super great. Very happy to finally have that under my belt.
Game good.
Tales of Berseria
THIS GAME IS SO GOOD.
I’ve run into at least some problems with it, which is probably a good thing.
It has some pacing issues. I think the payoff for why they have these longer, drawn out parts is more than worth it, but there are some heavy combat sections in the second act of the game, with some really slow story parts, that are intentionally slow to kind of bring some real dark topics out of the woodwork.
Like I said, they are totally worth it for the payoffs, but it just felt a bit wonky when they were going on. For the most part, the entire first two thirds of the game are paced really well as far as story-to-combat-ratio is concerned.
The side quests are pretty back-loaded on the game, but they are kind of like mini stories that are told throughout the game as the world progresses, and they’re very good.
I fucking adore this game. So happy Tales has hit a big one out of the park again.
Questions
Y’all better tune into Episode 21 of The BrOC where Harold Price joins us to discuss such topics as:
Teens fucking adults
Adults fucking teens
Teens fucking other teens
Pregnancy Scares
Probably some super racist shit that Tyler will say and Jon will edit out
This is cute. Adorable.
Are Robot Dinosaurs cars? I think so. Equal in metal-count, so they count, right?
Wow Joey.
You have time to send me tweets asking me what I’ll miss, but you don’t have time to figure out how to go to PAX East with us?
How about the fact that you’re hanging out in Universal Studios today, having fun at Harry Potter world and fuck-all and whatever, which could probably definitely for sure inmyhumbleopinion paid for a trip to Boston.
Huh.
HUH.
But for real like everything and wine. That’s what I’ll miss.
I’ve been on record as stating I am a proud-as-fuck Ravenclaw. Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.
But I think all the houses are great. People give shit to Gryffindors but like, why? Because your insecure in your shit you assholes?
I was always hesitant about Slytherin but one of my best friends, Jazz Foster, is a total Slytherin, and she’s great. So like, everyone chill.
But Ravenclaw for sure.
I’m not a piece of meat. No one calls “dibs” on my “booty” for “PAX East”.
But seriously, I’ve gotten three separate private messages from all the men staying in my room at PAX East saying they were going to
(1) sleep in the same bed with me,
(2) fuck my ass
(3) “claim” me, whatever the hell that means?
Jesus Christ guys.
Jesus Christ.
I honestly don’t see it changing too much. Last year, and the multiple years leading up to it, I discussed on IrrationalPod the need for E3 to be more relevant, because really it hasn’t been as relevant as it used to be. Now, it’s still a massively important show and the show of most developer’s choice to reveal or announce their games, but there are so many other shows for that now. With E3 going public, they can reinvigorate that and speak directly to the public again, instead of this kind of press only, kind of not event that everyone who cared about games paid attention to anyway.
Now, with consumers actually attending the event, I think it’ll encourage the big companies to still participate in E3, because they can really sell their things there again. Before the PAXes and the PSXes, there was no way for consumers to come and preview games early. Now E3 has to open up to the idea of that too.
This doesn’t necessarily mean E3 will be that, nor does it mean everyone will be able to attend the pressers and whatnot, but it makes things a bit more interesting again. That’s a big plus for an event that’s been struggling for quite a bit now.
Dude, Persona. For sure.
Just directly spew that anime right into my body. I need it.
That or Zelda, because no matter what you think of any given Zelda game, it’s good vibes. It’s an adventure game that is at its worst comfort food.
This is a tricky question. There are usually redeeming qualities in all the games I play, or sink any amount of time into, and I think I’ve gotten pretty good at knowing when a thing isn’t for me, so I’d just avoid it.
I think Tales of Graces f was a rough one for me. The end of Tales of Zestiria couldn’t come fast enough when I was playing it. But for the most part I enjoyed that game.
Omega Quintet is garbage but I was playing that for a Let’s Play with Tony so I guess that was *kind of* worth it.
I was not into Battlefield 1 when I played it. I know, I know, I have to legitimately sit down and play it, not tired out of my mind in the middle of ExtraLife.
Past that, it’d probably be some free PS+ game that just didn’t jive with me. Lords of the Fallen was free with Gold and I wasn’t very into it when I gave it a shot.
Shoutouts
I wanna give a shout out to Dustin Furman and Brandon Duncan for inviting me on their show Adventure Mode. Was listening to it on my lunch break earlier today, and you should definitely check it out if you haven’t already. We were originally going to record tonight but it sounds like we’ll be doing that on Tuesday instead, but those guys put on a good show and you should check them out.
http://www.handsomephantom.com
Alright, I have to go watch two episodes of the OC and then probably go to bed early because it was someone’s bright idea to have me on a podcast at 11 in the fucking morning on my day off. I’m not very happy about it, but the creative wheel never stops turning.
Until next Sunday: keep it real...
