Toothless and Malik Al-Sayf head cannon Part 3:

One more than one occasion, after watching Malik draw maps, Toothless himself feels inspired and begins to draw around the bureau. Having never used ink before, he is fascinated by it and ends up using the last of Maliks ink, causing him to need to run out to buy more on an almost daily basis.

Altair: you use a lot of ink for a single man.

Malik: I am not the only one who uses it novice.

Altair: who’s the other person who uses it?

Toothless: *grinning proudly at his latest drawing as ink drips from his prosthetic tail fin*
