between garth killing the tooth fairy and Oz being a thing i’m honestly surprised supernatural didn’t do a reveal that gabriel of trickster fame was actually willy wonka or some shit. i don’t think his story was dumb enough, i need him in a silly top hat

I would like to introduce you to one of the universe’s strangest life forms: mushrooms. These little (or not so little) fellows come in many shapes and forms, some of them in colors that are reminiscent of a Judith Clarke illustration of Pixie Hollow or setting in the Lord of the Rings, while others seem to belong more to the macabre side of imagination, like witches spells and assassin’s poisons. I have a deep love for fungus of all sorts, and think it would be fantastic to see more in fantasy books. Here are a few of my favorites.

1. Wood Ear Mushroom (Auricularia auricula-judae)

Let’s start with the Wood Ear Mushroom. This lovely little fellow is often shaped remarkably like a human’s ear--who ever said walls had ears? Trees have actually got them. Imagine a forest filled with these mushrooms, listening to everything from the sound of elk bellowing in the distance to the breathing of a toad. It is an edible fungus, though I’d avoid it if I were you...you might find yourself hearing strange voices in the middle of the night, and whispers where there is only silence.

2.  Parrot Toadstool (Gliophorus psittacinus)

These parrots toadstools look like they’ve come right out of Willy Wonka’s factory, though you don’t want to take a taste, not unless you want a gastrointestinal disorder. I imagine these green-capped lads would belong nicely in a fantasy setting. They really should glow.

3. Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus)

A personal favorite, this shroom goes by the name of shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane (for obvious reasons). It isn't uncommon, often found on lawns, along gravel roads, and in waste areas. The fun (and slightly creepy) thing about them is that they dissolve soon after being picked, turning black and falling apart, precisely the sort of thing you’d expect a protagonist to get poisoned by during their impossible journey to save the world. Only, these won't kill you. They are edible, but NEVER EAT WILD MUSHROOMS, as these are often mistaken for the magpie ink cap, which WILL kill you.

4.  Frost's Bolete (Exsudoporus frostii)

Apparently one day a mushroom decided it needed to look like a piece of meat, and this monstrosity appeared. Are those veins? Tendons? Does the Frost’s Bolete consume carrion and take on the look of its meal? Unfortunately, no. This meaty-looking man is just an impersonator, but would be a great addition to the aftermath of a battle...maybe they grow from corpses?

5. Phellodon sinclairii

No, this is not a delicious fairy-tart with whipped cream and syrup. No wonder it is called strawberries and cream, bleeding Hydnellum, red-juice tooth, and Devil's tooth. If I ran across this in the woods I don’t know if I’d be able to keep from taking a bite, but the beautiful red droplets are not syrup, but guttation droplets that contain a red pigment.

this one is also hard. i don’t think i could pick a favorite, but recently i’ve been listening to belle and sebastian’s album “if you’re feeling sinister” a lot (“like dylan in the movies”, “get me away from here i’m dying”, and “mayfly” are my favorites on the album)!!

i thought griffins were really cool growing up! (also, i had a phase in elementary school where i was convinced i was going to go to college to become a tooth fairy. not sure if that counts?)

i’m not super educated on newer musicals, but growing up i loved watching classic ones with my mom — mary poppins, sound of music, wizard of oz, willy wonka, annie, little shop of horrors — so i have lots of good memories from those. i did have a big lin-manuel miranda phase in high school though, so hamilton and in the heights were also favorites of mine at one point. ooh and since it’s been in the news a lot this week, i can’t forget phantom of the opera!!

4. Floss Properly

For many people who clean their teeth on a regular basis, flossing is a strange concept. Flossing, like brushing, should be done once a day to remove any leftover food from your teeth and plaque buildup between them.
