okay second time I'm typing this so not as excited after the window closed unexpectedly 😒but still
scrollin through tiktak and this video slapped me in the face and catapulted me back into deeeeep nostalgia
like I used to go to Sam goodys to buy anime merch and manga cause it was the only place close by that sold it back in the early 00s and I used to get this anime magazine that Google is making me think may have been NEWTYPE, from a vague memory of the one cover with the "Ah! My Goddess" (and damn another memory of drawing that main character cause I just loved how all their hair looked and wanted to do that style)
Anywho, the magazines had these dvds that only had multiple anime intros on them??? I think it was just intros and not whole episodes?? cause I have no idea what this anime is about but I remember rewinding this intro so often cause the song was a bop and I'd freeze frame on my clunky TV to try and draw the purple haired guy
man what a time. damn.
And I still remember having a tape recorder for sounds and would record the intros and outros of my fave animes and the kingdom hearts opening so I could listen to them while eaiting/on the bus and try to sing them phonetically from what I could understand and memorize since I didn't have a computer yet to look up the correct lyrics and who knows if animelyrics.com was a thing then --I mean it was only a few years later so probs.
but anywho I think the first song I recorded were the ones for Inuyasha when it was on toonami and I remember asking my mom to listen and tell me what language it was cause I didn't know and neither did she cause I distinctly remember her saying it was Spanish 😂😂😂😂😂

Why couldn’t Toonami get good rap music, like DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince?

5 and 6?
5. worst ending of an anime you’ve watched
Oh heck I don’t know?
I’d say I have pretty :/ feelings about the Bleach ending, but not really because of the end game pairings, which fans tend to aim towards most, but the events leading up to it (the TYBW arc devolves into a trainwreck not gonna lie). The biggest points for me are:
Obvious character bias: fan favorites such as Byakuya and Toshiro more screen time than they really need, while underdeveloped characters like Unohana and Ukitake are just. Killed off.
The unstable pacing: the fact that the last few chapters were rushed Did Not Help, and resulted in many unanswered questions. Although many of them would be answered in the CFYOW novels, it just doesn’t feel that... satisfying.
Soul Society never changes: The beginning of the SS arc establishes that Soul Society is actually incredibly flawed; there is a huge class gap, with most of the Rukongai being poverty stricken because of the government huge bias for the nobles, to the point people will sacrifice themselves by becoming just so they can afford necessities. They are then manipulated into believing that Soul Society is actually a pleasant utopia to prevent uprisings. Anyways, after the SS arc it’s never addressed again, and Soul Society is never viewed in a negative light afterwards. The end of the series gave an opportunity to depict some drastic changes to Soul Society, but instead there are just new captains. Everything is the same again.
I actually have a lot more to say about it but I’ll probably save it for another time since I already wrote a lot asdkjalkd
6. favorite opening sequence
The 6th opening of Bleach, “Alones” by Aqua Timez, the song’s A Bop, and I get a lot of nostalgia listening to it since this season was airing on toonami when I first got into bleach about a decade ago.
Anime Asks!

Every time I hear the yu yu hakusho op I literally feel so good bc I flashback to those nights I’d watch toonami and I loved the show and the song and it’s just so reminiscent of 90s anime and even to this day it is a damn bop!!!

This one’s a long ramble about people my age, and their place in society. I don’t exactly know what I’m talking about here. I don’t even know what I wrote. But the deadline’s past due, so take it!
I think a lot about generational experiences. What it was like to live in an era with speakeasies and mafia-dominated politics, or in a period of major cultural reform in response to a lost war. But today I’ve been thinking a lot about my generation in particular - or rather, what exactly my generation is.
The people that I hang out with in person are generally around my age. I mean, that’s natural, right? That’s obvious. I was born in 2000, and so were a lot of my friends. We were born on the tail-end of the millennial generation, but aren’t quite young enough to properly identify with Generation Z, or the iGeneration. A lot of us didn’t even get our first iPhones until we were already preteens!
The first shows we watched growing up - Courage the Cowardly Dog, Powerpuff Girls, and Dexter’s Lab come to mind - are just as fondly remembered as the ones we discovered a bit later on - Chowder, Regular Show, Adventure Time, to name a few. On Toonami, I caught episodes of Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, as well as Dragonball and Naruto. The toys I played with reflect this too. We had this mix of Furbies and Bop-its and a bunch of other by-then-passe trends, while still being there for the start of crazes like Webkinz and Silly Bandz (they both had z’s at the end, strange).
I always had trouble publicly calling myself a “millennial”, since people would always give me this sort of look that just oozed “Aren’t you a little young…”. At the same time, though, I didn’t exactly grow up with widespread internet or smart technology. That was all still relatively new stuff as I was becoming old enough to know how to use it. But after some careful elaboration, I think this sort of “in-between generation” classification fits pretty well.
It’s not such a bad thing, living my life at this sort of cultural crossroads. At least for me, personally, I’ve found that it’s less of a “caught between two cultures that both reject me” experience, and more one of me enjoying all of the experiences unique to both generations at once. They music I grew up listening to ranged from dusty, lo-fi hip hop((((( to bling-era rap and bubblegum pop. I discovered a box with classic flicks from the eighties on VHS, just as my favorite movies from the theaters were hitting DVD.
I can identify with and relate pretty easily to most people within a decade of my age, having usually at one point shared at least one piece of media or culture that we can both reminisce upon fondly. For some, it’s a series of books that we both held dearly during our formative years, me in grade school, them in high school. Hell, my friends and I can spend hours talking about the best games on the Cartoon Network website, the majority of which don’t even exist anymore.
Of course, all of this means that I’ve been affected by the harsh realities of both generations to some extent. The all-too-real financial and economic issues that plague the millennial generation are becoming more and more scary by the day for me, even though I haven’t had to engage very directly with them just yet. At the same time, I’m tasked with Generation Z’s burden of the future, having to inherit the Earth left to me by the sum of humanity up until now - complete with all of its self-destructive, crisis-ridden fuck-ups.
This isn’t to say that “true” millennials can’t relate to the experiences of the iGeneration, or vice-versa -- there’s definitely some cultural crossover. I think a lot of the reason that this crossover exists, though, is because of my mini-generation, a sort of missing link between two cultures that would probably have a much larger rift without us.

What anime should I watch next?
Just finished Yuri!!! On Ice and I loved it. But it's been a while since I watched much. Grew up on toonami anime (cowboy beep bop, outlaw star, inuyasha samurai champloo), as well as a healthy (ish) diet of shoujo (marmalade boy, nana, Othello, mars, absolute boyfriend). I like action, but am a total sucker for romance and comedy Recommendations?

“*Thirteen* years. Waits up, still sleep, wake-up, Girl gone, break-up, mind right, cake up, Friends came, friends left, Bullshit is endless”- Joe Budden
*Beat comes in* Yeah. Turn the caps up. Turn me up in the cap locks. Okay. Yeah. Ha-Haaaaaa. Cartoon Network you crazy for this one! Adult Swim I see you. All the way at the deep end baby, what up. Ayo, T.O.M. Toonami! Bet you Twenty grand I get this in one take!
*Hands in 6 God prayer formation* Listen, for thirteen years Samurai Jack left the fandom on a Whitney/Mariah high note with it’s final episode back in 2004. For thirteen years Samurai Jack bowed out the game. I’m talkin’ Exile. Retirement. Raised Jack’s jersey Gi in the rafters with the greats. Samurai Jack let your fave shows on Cartoon Network eat. Ya man let Naruto eat. Ya man let all incarnations of Teen Titans Go eat. Jack even allowed shows on different networks to eat like Gravity Falls on Disney. Jack sat back and watched the next generation flourish, He allowed Steven Universe to teach yall muh fuckas ’bout this “Love is love is love” life. Jack fucks with Adventure Time messages and swords play. Jack cosigned every season of Young Justice.
Tumblr media
Then somewhere along the lines, they got Samurai Jack fucked up. Maybe it was all these remakes of old classic shows coming back as half-ass television or trash movies. Maybe it was studios fucking up with the lack of diversity and paying homage. Maybe it was when they canceled Jack’s successor to realness Young Justice or disrespected Avatar: Legend of Korra over at Nickelodeon. I don’t know what it was but something made ya shogun snap and say, “Nawwww. Nawww, I don’t accept that.” Something made your samurai and dem tired of letting these unknown ingrates eat. Something made Samurai Jack realize he’s got some stuff left in the basement and a muhfucka is ready to renovate.
We were told Samurai Jack would be darker and grittier and folk got worried that we wouldn’t be getting the Jack we grew up with. The wanted that wholesome Jack back. They wanted that Kidz Bop Jack. You don’t get what you want in life, Fam. They brought your man back decked out in the God’s armor, kevlar’d the fuck up. Off the strength, Jack was up riding on a Bon Jovi edition steel horse. My guy, how you riding on the chopper while holding a choppa (gun) doe?! Rocking a fucking a tengu mask and letting the oowop (another gun) bop. Then we see Jack got the fucking 10 O’ Clock silhouette on his face, hair grown out to a mane cause ya man done seen it all and been through it all. This is 50 years later an Jack isn’t the same, for us in real time it’s thirteen years later in the fandom. We aren’t the same either. Jack done lost his sword, and although that sucks we get to remember how much of a capable fighter he is and all the styles he’s trained in.
