stuff victoria said about her new series on today’s live:
It’s an adventure/quest fantasy book, very lotr-esque, with all the tropes people love about the genre while also poking fun at the ridiculous things about it.
She said she wrote it as like, what would she have liked in a fantasy book when she was a teen? She said that while she was a lotr Stan, she never really saw herself in the story, so this is just a bunch of stuff she likes to see in books.
The world is kind of medieval, around 1300s (it’s not set in that year but it’s like that time period)
The mc, corayne, is a mf pirate. That’s so cool I—
She also deals more with like the technical side of piracy, not the more physical/fight side.
She said corayne was different from mare in the sense that corayne never felt like she had a home and is sort of seeking that, while mare wanted to defend the home and family she already had
On a similar line, this story has a found family trope!! Kind of like. soc meets lotr I guess
The crew includes corayne, an immortal dude named dom, and an assassin, maybe some more.
This is a multiple POV book, she said there were 5 or 6 but some of them were not very frequent
It’s also written in third person which she said was what she was used to, she used to write fanfic in third person and had never written in first until rq, and now she’s gone back to it
There’s also multiple villains!! And twists like “ope thought this person was good but they’re not yikes”
There’s multiple love interests but not love triangles, and the romance is more slow burn (I’m thinking like.... a soc kinda thing where there’s couples within the crew lol)
She said the thing binding the crew together was “well SOMEONE has to save the world guess it’s us smh”.
She didn’t give many details on the plot but mentioned a sword was very very important, it’s sort of what the crew is chasing
She also said the crew was very culturally diverse, and she did a lot of research in world cultures in order to get their stories right
She talked a lot about this dom guy who is an immortal, said it was interesting to write him because he had to learn to deal with grief and loss, something he’s never had to face before
This time she was way more careful with the names because they say a lot abt the characters’ stories and cultures, like for Dom for example she took a lot of inspo in Celtic and Gaelic cultures (and he has a super difficult name I did not catch but ppl just call him dom)
On terms of houses, Corayne is a ravenclaw, Dom is a gryff, the assassin is definitely a slyth, and there’s a hufflepuff character too.
There’s A Lot of action scenes
It comes out in 2021
Cover reveal is “sooner than we might except” and it’s a seccsi seccsi cover according to her
Overall this sounds like a pretty spicy book
pls add to this if I missed anything, got anything wrong!!
