Our most emotionally & spiritually rewarding project has been The Remedy Project: The Arts Of Healing. This mixtape series honors those on the forefront of our medical industry and features musical collaborations between Philly Jazz artists, healthcare workers & medical professionals. This photo presents The Sound Mind Ensemble: an all star affair led by arranger/conductor Keith DeStefano and featuring sax men, Odean Pope, Victor North & Josh Lee, as well as brass players, Nick Lombardelli & Stan Slotter. They recorded Blood Count, a hauntingly beautiful song written by Duke Ellington’s collaborator, Billy Strayhorn - who is believed to have written the song on his death bed. We had the great pleasure of presenting & collaborating with the phenomenal Philly-based bassist, Tony Tnt Jones. A musician who could easily move from Jazz to Blues, to Funk to R&B and back again, Jones performed or recorded with a diverse array of artists including Nina Simone, Billy Paul, and Grover Washington Jr., Sister Sledge, Sonny Stitt, Norman Connors, The Blue Notes, Buddy Guy, Red Rodney, Eartha Kitt, Larry Coryell, Pacquito d’Rivera, Taj Mahal, Angela Bofield, Esther Phillips, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Big Mama Thornton, Pharoah Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronnie Laws and others. Tony TNT Jones traveled all around the globe, performing and sometimes, living in cities like Istanbul, Cologne, Brussels, Rome, Madrid, Paris and others. He worked with us on multiple occasions including our Great Migration-First Friday Rent Party Series, Philadelphia Songbook Volume #1 Concert, Facing East: Islamic Influence In Jazz, Philly Makes The World Go Round and Love Notes. Tony Jones was the catalyst and co/producer for The Remedy Project: The Arts Of Healing - a particularly powerful mixtape initiative where Jazz artists collaborated with medical professionals and healthcare workers. For this project, he offered up two beautiful songs that he had written for his friend and mentor, Nina Simone. We have all lost an exceptional artist, leader, visionary and teacher. In 2018, we released a project that paid tribute to our healthcare workers and medical professionals, by creating new music with them. Some of the Philadelphia Jazz artists participating included Barbara Montgomery, Tony TNT Jones, Victor North, Odean Pope, Adam Faulk, Keith DeStefano, Kimpedro Too and others. At the time, we had no idea what was to come, but as we collaborated with them, knew that we were doing something special. Today, our national healthcare infrastructure, in crisis, once again placing our dedicated community of healthcare workers and medical professionals in both harm's way, but also in emotionally difficult circumstances.
