Here's the answer to the #YankeesTrivia question on the @yesnetwork
I got three out of the four answers. I have to be honest, I have no idea who Don Kessinger is. Looking online he had respectable 16-year career as a shortstop for the Cubs, Cardinals and White Sox. He has two managerial claims to fame.
One is that he is currently the last American League Player Manager (Rose is the last National League Player Manager.) The second is that on August 2, 1979 he was replaced by then AAA Iowa Oaks manager, future Hall of Fame manager and current manager of the Chicago White Sox Tony La Russa.

Book Review: ‘One Last Strike' by Tony La Russa with Rick Hummel
Tumblr media
I love the game of baseball.  I can credit my grandfather for that.  When my brother and I were young, we watched baseball games with my grandfather and he showed us his baseball card collection.  I’ve always found there is something magical about the game. Watching baseball has never been boring for me.
I’ve been a lifelong Phillies’ fans.  My brother got us tickets for Opening Day, which is tomorrow.  I have been to Citizens Bank Park where the Phillies play many times, but never on an Opening Day.
I am not a Cardinals’ fan.  But I love the game of baseball, and I have a lot of respect for their longtime manager Tony La Russa.  La Russa got his managerial start with the White Sox the month I was born (August 1979). He also managed the Oakland A’s in the ‘80s and ‘90s and was the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1996 to 2011. He won three World Series titles (one with the A’s, two with the Cardinals).  He is third all time in managerial wins. He was quite an impressive manager, so I decided to read his book, One Last Strike.
The book is a memoir of La Russa’s career and also the inside story about the incredible season that the Cardinals had in 2011.  Luckily, the book is not divided into Part One and Part Two.  La Russa weaves his past experience into the parts about the 2011 season.
La Russa strikes me as very honest and candid, and highly intelligent. There is no BS with him – he tells the reader exactly what he is thinking.  He is very insightful into the matters of the game of baseball, and I learned a lot from this book.  It is a pleasure to read.
The 2011 season was off to a bad start when ace pitcher Adam Wainwright had to have Tommy John surgery and was shut down for the season.  The Cardinals also had a lot of injuries throughout the year, which every team deals with.  The real story with this team begins with six weeks left in the season. The Cardinals were 10 ½ behind the Atlanta Braves in the wild card.  The Cardinals went on a historic run, going 23-8 for the remainder of the season and clinching the Wild Card spot on the last day of the season.  La Russa gives credit to his players for grinding out games and staying hot down the stretch.  Throughout the book La Russa spoke very highly of his players and their commitment and intensity.
La Russa’s mantra is “win the series,” which means win two games out of a three game set.  He also believes in what he calls “personalizing,” which is about him developing personal relationships with his players.
The Cardinals were the underdogs throughout the playoffs.  They beat my beloved Phillies in the NLDS.  I vividly remember the last out of the series. Ryan Howard blew up his Achilles’ and couldn’t even run to first base after he hit the ball.  2011 was the last time the Phillies were in the postseason. The Cardinals beat the Brewers in the NLCS and staged yet another comeback in the World Series when they beat the Texas Rangers in seven games.
The reader never really leaves La Russa’s point of view in the book.  There is, as expected, a lot of play by play in the book, but it is nicely supplemented by La Russa’s insights.  La Russa really illustrates how much thought goes into every baseball season, and every baseball play Even if you’re not a Cardinals’ fan – hell, even if you are not a baseball fan – One Last Strike is a compelling, detailed, and enjoyable read by one of baseball’s greatest managers, thinkers, and philosophers.
The Cardinals play the Cubs tonight at 8 PM EST on ESPN to open the 2015 Major League Baseball season.  Sports Illustrated picked the Phillies to be the worst team in baseball, but I will be rooting for them anyway.
