When Nashville needed The Highwomen, The Highwomen showed up. Following a tragic tornado that took lives, homes and Nashville businesses, Yola (member of The Highwomen) had an idea and with the help of her manager and her music family they brought some of the biggest names in music together in less than a week, volunteering their time for a charity concert that raised over $500,000 for the community.
Among the business destroyed by the tornado that went through downtown Nashville, The Basement East, is the location where another idea was born in December 2017. Amanda Shires approached Brandi Carlile, a stranger to her and boldly said they needed to form a super group. In the months to follow they would collaborate with some of the biggest names in music, both song writers and performers. It started out as a mission for Shires to change the way women are represented in country music.
Shires, with a l daughter of her own, wanted to lay the frame work for more opportunities for her child and the daughters all around the world. Shire has a unique expression of music and beauty. She is far from one to jump into the spot light, often deferring to Brand Carlile to speak during interviews. She had to overcome fears and social anxiety just to reach out to Brandi Carlile, a woman who herself was fighting against the machines of society as an openly gay musician and mother of two daughters.
The Highwomen was formed with four core members, Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby, Shires and Carlile. Honorary members included Yola and Sheryl Crow. Their first album release in 2019 featured songs like "Redesigning Women" , 'If She Ever Leaves Me" and of course "Highwomen". In the months to follow the band would support each other as a unit, as individual artist and on projects helping other women get the notariaty that they deserves, like Tanya Tucker who won her first Grammy in 2020 for the song "Bring Me Flowers". The album was Co-produced by Brandi Carlile who also collaborating on writing most of the songs on the album.
Country music radio began receiving pressure for their lack of female presence on the air. CMT vowed to play female artist as often as they played male artist, a sign that what started out as an idea was causing real change.
Brandi Carlile, a Grammy award winner also began opening up for women artist who hadn't received as much attention as their talents deserved. Maren Morris, a top selling artist with #1 hits before the group made a call to her, as she was on the set of Jimmy Fallon, was eager to be a part of the group despite having already done what so few women were able to do and so early in her career.
Amanda Shires could not be there the night of the benefit concert, but husband, Jason Isbell was there. Amanda Shires may not have been on the stage with them, but I have to wonder if any of it would have been possible if a shy artist and mother with an idea hadn't of had the courage to approach Brandi and say, "let's form a super group.". I wonder, also if Amanda would of found that courage if it wasn't for the love she had for a daughter who dreams of being a musican and her mother loving her so much she wants to do all she can to make that path for her a little easier than it has been for women artist.
As a group that was more than music, but a movement grew in momentum, it should be no surprise that when Yola had an idea, they made it a reality.
A tornado destroyed a community and a music land mark (The Basement East), but thanks to the butterfly effect of a loving mother and the kindness of so many in the community and an extension of the community, Nashville will rise from this destruction and be even greater.

Floated art is the best way to display, so much more dimensional and tells a story about each piece. - [x] #memphis #901 #memphisart #framecornermemphis #midtownmemphis #germantowntn #colliervilletn #customframing #framecornermemphis #framecorner #Choose901 #memphisartist #bluffcity #memphistennessee #901shoplocal #memphisframer #mustbememphis #parkave #38117 #38104 #38103 #ilovememphis #memphisdesgner #memphishome #newmemphishome #memphishomegoals #interiordesignmemphis #mississippidelta (at Frame Corner, Inc.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZUGzUgukqU/?utm_medium=tumblr
