The petty bourgeois has a house, a garden and a dog. This is not why I criticize him. My fear is caused by the neglected, suppressed [or oppressed — t/n] world of the petty bourgeois, which is nothing other than the universe suppressed under consciousness. As for his house, garden and dog, I am at best happy about them, even if only with a faint smile—, because these are at least visible things. These he has accepted into his life and his consciousness. What I am afraid of is what the petty bourgeois doesn’t dare to shoulder from the whole of human existence; that garden without a sky.
Glancing at the petty bourgeois, I sense above all a deformed, denied and unconfessed [unaknowledged] universe, which, if once it finds a chance to speak, the "petty bourgeois" will leave his house, garden and dog without hesitation, to fit out -modelled on the suppressed [or oppressed — t/n] universe- a world of concentration camps; an unconfessable universe modelled on an unconfessed universe.
