Navy Eyes Dark Enough
Or, five times Geralt didn't realize Jaskier was a witcher and one time he did.
Inspired by this post. Read on AO3 here.
-
Most witchers move among humans with some difficulty. People want them around for their skills but theyā€™re hardly considered good company. Their swords, their eyes, their medallions all give them away for what they are and inspire fear in the humans around them. Jaskier passes much more easily as a human than any other witcher heā€™s met. A pretty face and prettier words go a long way for a witcher and heā€™s been blessed with both. Heā€™d been called a pretty boy since his earliest days at Gorthur Gvaed and the mutations had been kind to his looks, leaving him baby faced into adulthood and granting him navy eyes dark enough to hide the shape of his pupils from anyone who didnā€™t look too closely. His teachers hadnā€™t necessarily approved of his interest in poetry and prose but they didnā€™t mind him tearing apart the library for all the fiction he could find, so long as he was reading the nonfiction as well. Heā€™s unafraid to leverage this advantage while on the Path. He gains a townā€™s trust faster than his brothers and is rarely underpaid because of it. Heā€™s never found himself short of romantic partners. Heā€™d talked himself into Oxenfurt because it sounded like fun. He spends his time as a traveling bard, taking contracts only when heā€™s low on funds or his brothers ask it of him. It hurts, sometimes, to keep his twisted Viper medallion hidden under his clothes but it makes it easier to hide in plain sight. For all he leverages the way he blends in with humans, Jaskier had never expected another witcher not to recognize him.
1. 1240 Jaskier has traveled alone for most of his time on the Path. There was the string of contracts almost two decades back when heā€™d helped Letho and Auckes but that was before heā€™d left Nilfgard and the South behind almost entirely. After a week of traveling with Geralt, heā€™s starting to realize that heā€™s missed it. Traveling the Path with someone else is different than the traveling Jaskier does in caravans as a bard. Despite their unfamiliarity with traveling together, they fall into an unexpectedly easy routine when it comes to setting up camp. Geralt, a Wolf to the core, insists on doing the ā€œhard workā€ of it all and Jaskier isnā€™t going to complain about leisurely picking berries and filling their waterskins. By the time Jaskier makes it back to camp with their waterskins full, Geralt is usually finishing setting up their fire after having set a few traps nearby. He lights it with Igni, of course, like any witcher worth his Signs would. It isnā€™t until their second week of traveling together that Jaskier beats Geralt back to their camp. The area theyā€™re in, despite being filled with berries and freshwater, was suspiciously devoid of game. Jaskier had suspected magic at first but his medallion is too silent for the kind of magic that would require. If itā€™s a monster though, itā€™s leaving them suspiciously alone. He debates the likelihood of various possible monsters while he builds their small fire. Heā€™s not nearly as skilled at the technical aspects of fire building as Geralt but a Sign can level a playing field and he has it started in no time. Geralt enters their small clearing only a moment later. ā€œThat was fast,ā€ he grunts as he moves past Jaskier. Jaskier shrugged. ā€œIā€™ve always been better than my brothers at it,ā€ he explains, moving his hand in a general approximation of the Sign. Heā€™d always preferred his magic lessons to swordplay at Gorthur Gvaed and heā€™s a bit jealous at the way heā€™s seen Geralt so easily use his Signs while he fights. The double shortsword style of Jaskierā€™s school did not lend well to Sign usage while fighting. Geralt gives the fire what Jaskier supposes is a thoughtful look and then grunts, moving away to set up a small tent. 2. 1244 It is not often that Jaskier finds himself caught up in the habits ingrained in him during his training. Heā€™s decades removed from his trials and, for the most part, he has kicked the habits that Ivar and the other Viper Masters beat into him. His posture is a wreck. He doesnā€™t keep a journal in the way a witcher should. He takes his medallion off more often than most witchers would deem advisable. Perhaps most egregious to other members of his school is his chosen weapons. He still dual wields while fighting but these days he favors daggers to the traditional Viper shortswords. Theyā€™re much easier to hide. He keeps a stiletto in each boot and two in his lute case. One habit he cannot break is the way he cleans and sharpens his daggers after every use. He has two silver and two steel because he is a witcher, even if heā€™s a witcher who rarely takes contracts. They rarely need cleaning, especially when he travels with Geralt, but when they do, Jaskier is almost religious about it. His latest kill is a pack of drowners outside Murivel, as heā€™s lazily making his way through Redania and towards Ard Carraigh after completing his obligations at Oxenfurt. He finds no contract for them in town, which is frustrating after he ruined this seasonā€™s traveling clothes in the fight, but he gets some decent prices for some of the alchemy supplies he was able to harvest. When he makes it to an inn, itā€™s a bit before the midday meal, just enough time for him to clean himself and his daggers before he sings for his supper and his room. The innkeep is gracious enough to give him the room first, because he remembers Jaskier and knows heā€™ll be good for business. He lays his daggers out in a corner of the room and sits on the floor in front of them with a small bowl of water and a cloth. It isnā€™t long before he loses himself to the familiar motions.Ā Clean the blade. Sharpen the blade. Polish the blade. Unwrap the leather. Oil the leather. Rewrap the leather. Repeat.Ā  It doesnā€™t take very long, given how much smaller the blades are than his old shortswords but he takes longer than most men would bother with. A blade ill-treated is unlikely to treat you well in moments of need.
He goes downstairs to sing a bit for the midday meal. Heā€™s debating the merit of playing through Geraltā€™s song cycle without Geralt himself present when the door swings open and the witcher himself enters. He nods at Jaskier when he sees him and then goes to speak to the innkeep. Jaskier finishes his song and wanders over to Geralt as he plucks at the strings of his lute, playing but not singing.Ā
ā€œHeā€™ll join me, my good man,ā€ Jaskier declares after he hears the innkeep tell Geralt thereā€™s no available rooms. The inkeep shrugs and shows Geralt to Jaskierā€™s room while Jaskier continues to play.
Itā€™s another hour before he joins Geralt, who is making notes in his journal. Jaskier brings two bowls of broth and some bread with him and they share a pleasant meal after spending almost half a year apart.Ā
ā€œYouā€™ve bought more daggers,ā€ Geralt says as theyā€™re finishing, gesturing to where Jaskier had left his blades out after their rather thorough cleaning.
ā€œNot new,ā€ Jaskier clarifies, ā€œjust clean. They were a little too useful on the way here.ā€
Geralt snorts.
ā€œAnd what is that supposed to mean?ā€ Jaskier asks him, with no real heat.Ā
ā€œWhat use would you have for a dagger, other than the one you carry on your belt sometimes?ā€
Jaskier rolls his eyes and gathers the bowls, immune to Geraltā€™s teasing for the most part. It is just like the other man, to consider the fighting style of another school inferior to his own. ā€œNot all of us are trying to compensate for something with our gigantic swords.ā€
3. 1247
Jaskier manages to get his pants tied and his doublet buttoned as he runs back to the inn he and Geralt are staying at. He finds Geralt whetting his silver sword by the fire.
ā€œHello, Geralt,ā€ he says, as casually as he can manage. ā€œIf you wouldnā€™t mind departing just a bit early, I think nowā€™s a wonderful time to leave.ā€
Geralt grunts. ā€œThe room is paid until tomorrow.ā€
ā€œYes,ā€ Jaskier says, moving quickly towards the table heā€™s been using as a desk to pack the papers heā€™s spread across it. ā€œIā€™m afraid Iā€™ll have to lose out on that coin. Cā€™mon. Chop, chop. Pack your things.ā€ Jaskier moves onto his small pack of clothes in the corner.
ā€œDonā€™t forget your weird necklace,ā€ Geralt grunts, shoving Jaskierā€™s Viper medallion into his hand and Jaskier remembers taking it off before going looking for a lay for tonight, trusting Geralt with it before trusting a random lay wouldnā€™t steal it.
Jaskier pauses for a second, offended. The Viper medallions arenā€™t the same heavy stamped discs the rest of the schools use- they were forged individually into various twisting shapes before theyā€™d been enchanted. Jaskier finds them more attractive than the other schoolsā€™ medallions and more practical, easier to hide. ā€œExcuse me, as if yours is better.ā€Ā
ā€œLetā€™s go, Jaskier.ā€
Jaskier shuts his mouth and returns to packing for a moment before heā€™s forced to retaliate. ā€œFine but donā€™t think weā€™re not discussing your terrible taste in jewelry later.ā€
4. 1251
Geraltā€™s White Honey is absolute shit and Jaskier knows firsthand because heā€™s borrowed it before. Heā€™d replaced it after, of course, and he could tell when Geralt used the one Jaskier had brewed because it flushed the toxins much faster than Geraltā€™s usual swill.
Ivar would be very disappointed if he knew how long it takes Jaskier to figure out why Geraltā€™s White Honey is so poor in comparison to his own. As it turns out, Geralt is preparing both the honeysuckle and the white myrtle petals incorrectly. Heā€™s managed to flip their preparations, crushing the myrtle petals and chopping the honeysuckle, when it should be the other way around. Jaskier thinks maybe itā€™s a Wolf thing but heā€™s not sure it matters because watching Geralt butcher his potions every time is getting old.Ā
Jaskier doesnā€™t bother to keep his potions stocked beyond a few that are easy to keep in his packs but he helps Geralt when the other allows him to. Mostly he prepares ingredients as Geralt directs but given how sick he is of watching the other witcher butcher his potions, when Geralt asks him to crush some white myrtle petals he takes the knife from Geraltā€™s hand and chops them instead. ā€œJust give me that,ā€ he says, reaching for the honeysuckle Geralt had been about to chop. ā€œYou always do this wrong. Youā€™re supposed to cut the white myrtle and crush the honeysuckle.ā€
It doesnā€™t take very long for Jaskier to finish preparing the potion, though he stops short of the final mix lest Geralt actually murder him. He wipes his hands and picks up his lute, idly strumming.
ā€œWhere did you learn that?ā€ Geralt asks as he takes the ingredients Jaskier has prepared to finish mixing them.Ā
Jaskier rolls his eyes because White Honey, for all itā€™s helpful properties, is a recipe shared almost exclusively among witchers. ā€œOxenfurt, Geralt,ā€ he answers with a hefty amount of sarcasm in his voice.Ā
ā€œHmmmm.ā€
And doesnā€™t that pique Jaskierā€™s interest. Thatā€™s Geraltā€™s genuinely confused hum, not his ā€˜Jaskier, shut up, youā€™re not that funnyā€™ hum.
Ā ā€œWhere else would I have learned it?ā€ he prods. ā€œI am a Master of the seven liberal arts, as you know.ā€
ā€œDidnā€™t know they taught White Honey at Oxenfurt,ā€ is all Geralt says as Jaskier strums lazily at his lute. Geralt is being serious, Jaskier realizes- he believes he learned how to make White Honey at Oxenfurt.
White Honey is not taught at Oxenfurt. White Honey, per rather extensive experimentation by the Viper School, is mostly useless to anyone without a witcherā€™s mutations. While Jaskier is sure someone out there has the recipe who is not a witcher, it is certainly not taught at Oxenfurt. Jaskier is sure Geralt knows this but the other witcher is taking Jaskierā€™s joke seriously.
Oh.
Oh.
Geralt, somehow, just over ten years into their friendship, does not know Jaskier is a witcher. It takes effort to keep himself from crowing with laughter. This is just- Jaskier would be hurt if he didnā€™t find it so funny.Ā
Oh, this is incredible. Jaskier is going to milk this for all of its worth.
5. 1251
Jaskier continues to insinuate in every possible way that he can think that he is a witcher without actually saying it. Geralt does not catch on. It is simultaneously amusing and frustrating though it gives Jaskier a lot of perspective on certain aspects of their relationship.
Geralt is always surprised when Jaskier lights a fire quickly because he hasnā€™t considered that Jaskier is using Igni. Geralt insists that Jaskierā€™s hidden daggers are for show because he doesnā€™t quite believe that Jaskier knows how to use them. Geralt dismisses Jaskierā€™s Viper medallion as an odd piece of jewelry because he doesnā€™t remember that not all the schools use the same stamped metal the Wolves do for their medallions.
Jaskierā€™s current favorite game is trying to find the subject of his knowledge that will eventually push Geralt over the edge because he canā€™t accept that Jaskier learned it at Oxenfurt. He hasnā€™t found it yet.
Heā€™s trying the Wild Hunt today because there hasnā€™t been a reliable sighting in nearly thirty years and he knows very few humans who actually study the subject. All witchers know about it, of course, but the Vipers are most familiar. They were founded to study it, after all, and Jaskierā€™s knowledge on the subject is both broad and deep.
ā€œTheyā€™re elves, you know. Not the typical kind, mind you, but they speak an off dialect of Elder. Some of my teachers think theyā€™re from some other world. Thereā€™s unicorns there, apparently,ā€ he says as they walk beside Roach. Itā€™s a not-quite-bastardization of the various facts and theories but Jaskierā€™s not aiming for the truth, heā€™s aiming to confuse Geralt.
Geralt just grunts. Itā€™s not quite as satisfying a response as Jaskier had hoped but he thinks maybe Geralt is confused.
ā€œI think the unicorns are a little far-fetched, personally,ā€ he continues. ā€œItā€™s a nice thought, though.ā€
ā€œThe Wild Hunt is not a nice thought,ā€ Geralt says seriously. Which, well, is true.Ā
ā€œIā€™m well aware, Geralt. Iā€™ve read an entire library on the subject. The Continentā€™s biggest, in fact.ā€
ā€œThe biggest library on the Wild Hunt was at Gorthur Gvaed. Itā€™s been destroyed.ā€
ā€œYes. Well.ā€
The painful reminder stops Jaskier short. He normally doesnā€™t have much trouble separating his memories of Gorthur Gvaed from its destruction. He wasnā€™t there and if he doesnā€™t think about the raid he missed, itā€™s easy to pretend it never happened; that the keep, with its hidden passageways and winding rivers, is still standing in the mountains of Nilfgard; that his teachers are still there tending to the library; that his brothers are still out there and theyā€™re narrowly missing each other as they travel their own winding Paths. The mention of its destruction brings his idealized fantasy crashing down. Gorthur Gvaed is nothing but ruins and he has maybe five brothers left.Ā
Guilt wells up in the pit of his stomach and he decides the Wild Hunt is not the topic thatā€™s going to make Geralt realize heā€™s a witcher.
+1. 1251
Geralt feels hazy and slow as he wakes. Thereā€™s the dull ache of a pain in his leg and his blood burns. His vision comes slowly and when it does he takes stock.
Heā€™s trapped under a pile of rocks. The tunnel. The kikimores. The cave-in. The pain in his legs and his ribs is dull, due to his potions, but he thinks his leg might be broken and his ribs at least bruised. He has a concussion but he doesnā€™t think he was out for very long. There are potions burning through his system, one for the dark, at least, but with his head pounding, heā€™s not sure what else.
Heā€™s in a fairly large section of the tunnel system, with a small stream running through. There are four entrances to the cavern. He was caught as the fifth tunnel gave way and caved in.
He can see where his sword had landed and he might have enough time to clear enough of the rock to reach for it. He doesnā€™t like his chances of getting out of the cave on his own but there should only be one injured kikimore left and if it comes to him, he might be able to take it out. Jaskier will come looking for him once heā€™s been gone long enough and as long as the kikimore is dead before Jaskier enters the tunnels, the foolish bard should be safe.
Geralt closes his eyes, trying to listen for the kikimore, trying to gauge where it is and how much time he has. Not much, he realizes, after a moment of listening to the echoes of itā€™s skittering legs, but he can do it if he works fast.
His legs are still mostly pinned under the cave-in when the kikimore enters the cavern from one of the tunnels opposite Geralt.Ā
Fuck.
Heā€™s free enough to reach for the sword, stretching his body as far as it will go and exacerbating the pain in his leg, still pinned, as he does. His movement attracts the attention of the kikimore. Itā€™s beady eyes turn toward Geralt. Itā€™s a smaller specimen, a worker probably, but pinned as he is, Geralt knows it has the upperhand. He braces himself, trying to find the position that will give him the most power. If he can time this right, he might be able to behead the kikimore before it pierces his chest.
Suddenly, thereā€™s another body in the cavern, a blur of blue putting itself between Geralt and the kikimore, a dagger in either hand. The kikimore stops, eyes focusing on the new arrival.
ā€œJaskier, get the fuck out of here.ā€
ā€œCanā€™t do that, my dear.ā€ Jaskier lunges at the kikimore, leading with his blades.Ā
Geralt stops breathing. His only goal after the cave-in- to kill the kikimore before Jaskier came looking for him- is now impossible. He hasnā€™t been fast enough for the bardā€™s impatience and now the fool is going to die trying to fight a monster some young witchers struggle with.
Jaskier lands the first blow, a lucky hit against one of the kikimores legs. Itā€™s not deep but itā€™s enough to put the kikimore off balance. It strikes at Jaskier who dodges and pulls away. He puts some space between himself and the kikimore and pulls a small vial from his pocket. Itā€™s one from Geraltā€™s own stores, though he canā€™t tell which. It doesnā€™t matter. It would kill any human. It will kill Jaskier.
ā€œDonā€™t!ā€
Almost faster than Geralt can see, Jaskier throws his dagger into the kikimoreā€™s eye with deadly accuracy, stunning it for a moment. In almost the same moment, he downs the potion and pulls another dagger from his boot in one fluid motion. He dives back in to slash at the kikimoreā€™s throat, digging into it with both of his daggers. The kikimore chokes on its own blood, a sick wet, gurgling sound, and then suddenly it is on top of Jaskier, stabbing down and obscuring the bardā€™s body from Geralt. Geralt can barely see any of it but the sick sound of flesh being pierced overwhelms his ears. Instead of trying to watch, he returns to freeing himself from the cave-in.
It isnā€™t long before the sound has stopped and the kikimore is moving toward Geralt again. He can sit up fully now but twisting away from his legs to look at the scene behind him pulls at his ribs. Jaskierā€™s body is motionless on the ground and Geralt is furious. The idiot bard.
He manages to free the rest of his legs as the kikimore approaches. It takes massive effort to kneel up, ready to strike, but he manages. He still does not expect to make it out of the cave system but the least he can do is bring the kikimore down with him in honor of his friend.
Just as Geralt is preparing to swing at the approaching kikimore, it sinks to the ground. Standing over its lifeless body, is Jaskier, once again holding his daggers. His eyes are completely black and the veins surrounding them are dark beneath his pale skin. The toxicity of the potion hasnā€™t killed him. Itā€™s swirling through his system. Geralt knows his face looks much the same.
ā€œFuck.ā€
-
ā€œEleven years, Geralt,ā€ Jaskier crows as he helps Geralt back to the clearing where Roach is waiting for them. ā€œHow does it feel to have traveled with another witcher for eleven years and never once known? While holding his medallion in your hand and drinking the potions heā€™s prepared for you? Hmmm, Geralt? How does it feel?ā€
ā€œJaskier.ā€
ā€œYes?ā€
ā€œShut up.ā€

Looks like we are starting to hit the season of fall fashions!Ā  Simplicity has just announced their Pre-Fall collection, and Iā€™ll be posting about Butterickā€™s Early Fall collection tomorrow as well!Ā  Fall fashions tend to be my favorite, but, if Iā€™m being honest, Iā€™m not the most excited with these new releases.Ā  Perhaps my feelings will change as I write this review (as they sometimes do), but as of right now, Iā€™m holding out for the August Burda before I get really excited about fall fashions this year.Ā  Regardless, there is a lot to look at in this release, so letā€™s get started:
Ā  8686 ā€“ 1940s Vintage dress.Ā  I tend to like 40s fashions, but this is one of those styles that really is too cute/sweet/girly for me to picture myself wearing.Ā  I think the vintage lovers will enjoy this dress ā€“ it has lots of great features and style lines, but I think this is also one of those styles that looks distinctly vintage, and isnā€™t necessarily as translatable to someone who enjoys doing a ā€œsneaky vintageā€ modern wardrobe.
Ā  8687 ā€“ This shirt dress, on the other hand, feel very modern.Ā  Also perhaps slightly scandalous?Ā  I definitely get a ā€œwearing my manā€™s oversized shirt as a robe after I get out of bedā€ vibe from this.Ā  Not that there is anything wrong with that.Ā  But I think it may limit the versatility of this as a wardrobe piece.Ā  I do like the asymmetric hem and the wrap style, but, there is definitely a vibe I get from this piece that I donā€™t know if Iā€™d be comfortable wearing in public.Ā  Maybe a belt would change that feel for me?Ā  Styling could change this look a lot I thinkā€¦Ā  Feel free to completely disagree with me in the comments on this one ā€“ I feel like this could be a super popular design, since it is one of the more unique looks in this release.
Ā  8688 ā€“ This dress has some nice options, between the sleeve styles and the skirt styles.Ā  I donā€™t know that I need to add it to my collection ā€“ Iā€™ve got some knit dress patterns from back when I very first started sewing that are pretty similar ā€“ but I like this dress.Ā  Looks like it would be great as an outfit base for those fall days when you need to transition between layers and no layers.
Ā  8689 ā€“ This style of tunic really isnā€™t anything new, but I do think Simplicity did a nice job of styling and presentation.Ā  Another pass for me, but I would be excited to see other sewing bloggers make this one up.
Ā  8690 ā€“ Mimi G. Style.Ā  Iā€™m going to say that this dress looks adorable on Mimi!Ā  But, again, this is a case where I know it isnā€™t something Iā€™d wear myself, so itā€™s going to be a pass from a personal standpoint.Ā  It is super cute though ā€“ the proportions of the sleeves are great in relation to the whole dress.
Ā  8691 ā€“ Sew Chic dress.Ā  This is clearly a vintage inspired look.Ā  I like it, especially the short sleeved version, but Iā€™m pretty sure Iā€™ve got several vintage re-releases that are quite similar.Ā  Another style that I find to be cute, but not special enough to warrant a spot in the stash.
Ā  8692 ā€“ 1950s Vintage blouse pattern.Ā  I do like the shape of these blouses: fitted, but not overly so.Ā  Iā€™m not a big fan of zippers on the back of a top, but for views A-C it is pretty unavoidable with such a high neckline.
Ā  8693 ā€“ This asymmetric top looks like a button front shirt got halfway put on backwards to me.Ā  I do like the simpler versions (as a one-shoulder 80s-inspired sweater Iā€™m all about this pattern!), but Iā€™m really not a fan of the view that Simplicity used for the model photo ā€“ it just looks ill fitting and sloppy.
Ā  8694 ā€“ At this point there really is nothing left to say about these loose tops with sleeve details, except, look, another one!Ā  This one does have dolman sleeves, so I guess thatā€™s a new-ish variation to this style?Ā  Really, though, at this point there are so many, just pick one.
Ā  8695 ā€“ 1930s Vintage sleeve patterns.Ā  Do I want this to use on modern sewing pattern?Ā  No.Ā  Do I want this for part of my costume/cosplay pattern stash so I can study the drafting on these sleeve variants?Ā  You better believe it.
Ā  8696 ā€“ I prefer my cardigans with less volume and more length, but this does look rather cozy.
Ā  8697 ā€“ The square boyfriend blazer really isnā€™t a look that works for me, so Iā€™ll avoid this pattern for myself, but I do like the single and double breasted options here, as well as the collar variants.
Ā  8698 ā€“ I know itā€™s a drawstring pant, but itā€™s a drawstring pant with stripes and pockets and I like it.
Ā  8699 ā€“ I also rather like this skirt as well.Ā  I think I perhaps already have more than enough wrap pencil skirts in my Burda stash, but this one pattern seems to have a lot of variety, even though the pattern tweaks are pretty minimal between views.
Ā  8700 ā€“ Pattern Hacking.Ā  Iā€™ve been thinking I want a more casual jacket for fall, but something about the proportions of this one just arenā€™t doing it for me.
Ā  8701 ā€“ Pattern Hacking.Ā  Somehow switching out pockets doesnā€™t seem like much of a ā€œhack,ā€ but what do I know?Ā  I do like the silhouette and overall look of these, but, again, very similar to other styles Iā€™ve got in the stash already.
Ā  8702 ā€“ Mimi G. Style.Ā  This tracksuit is pretty cute and very 80s.Ā  Iā€™s not be interested in the drop-crotch pants at all, but I do like the jacket, and the slim-legged pants are cute for a fall work-out look.
Ā  8703 ā€“ This was a pattern that initially I just skipped over (itā€™s a plain yellow top and leggings), but, actually, those other tops with the stomach gathers are pretty cute!Ā  I donā€™t know if this will make it onto my wishlist, but it is a definite maybe.
Ā  8704 ā€“ Love these pull over tops!Ā  The raglan sleeve and length look great for exercising is colder weather.Ā  Plus, lots of cool pockets for exercising with devices.
Ā  8705 ā€“ This manā€™s version somehow doesnā€™t read as exciting as the womanā€™s pattern, but the sleeve pouch for a phone or iPod is pretty great.
8706 ā€“ Baby Gear.Ā  Not much to say about baby clothes, but the layers look practical.
8707 ā€“ Iā€™ve been toying with the idea of a lace cardigan for a while, and this isĀ exactly what I wanted.Ā  Love this!Ā  Totally going into my stash until I can locate the perfect lace fabric for this endeavor.
8708 ā€“ These girls dress are pretty generic, but also pretty cute for fall.
Ā  8709 ā€“ Gertrude Made bags.Ā  I donā€™t love the aesthetic of the bags in the photos, but from the line drawing, these are totally bags I would use.Ā  I do wish it was drafted for a zip closure, but I suppose that is something one could find a way to add?
Ā  8710 ā€“ These large travel duffle bags are also not depicted in a color scheme Iā€™d enjoy, but I do love how practical the bags are, plus they fit over the handle of a rolly suitcase!Ā  So cleaver.Ā  Iā€™d be curious to see how the inside is drafted (pockets???), but I think this might be on my list, since it seems my travel schedule is upping in the next year or so.
Ā  8711 ā€“ Madalynne.Ā  The bra does not look supportive enough for anyone outside of the A/B range, and why would you want to add butt ruffles to your underwear?Ā  I mean, really?Ā  At least from the standpoint of wearing underwear under clothes in any case.Ā  I was going to ponder the butt ruffle as an analog to a tail feather and the implications that could have in mating rituals, but I shall refrain.
Ā  8712 ā€“ Aprons.Ā  Pretty simple, not too exciting, but could be good if you want to make a ā€œmommy and meā€ sort of look.Ā  The aprons loop pretty practical, if not overly embellished ā€“ nice pockets and full coverage.
Ā  8713 -Hats!Ā  These are actually pretty cool, and really practical styles for costuming.Ā  Love how much variety comes in a single pattern too.
Ā  8714 ā€“ Love the historical doll clothes.Ā  So cute.
Ā  8715 ā€“ Ok, I want, nay, NEED this dragon in my life!Ā  How stinking cute is this?Ā  And, I mean, letā€™s be real ā€“ I need at least three of them.Ā  Thatā€™s right ā€“ NEED.
Ā  8716 ā€“Ā  These bears are cute, but they arenā€™t dragons.
Ā  8717 ā€“ More aprons.Ā  I find the other style to be more pragmatic.
Ā  8718 ā€“ Iā€™m sure the internet will tell me if Iā€™m wrong, but I really feel like this is supposed to be a Rey/Daenerys mash up of costume pieces?Ā  Lots of great pieces in here for the cosplayers out there.
Ā  8719 ā€“ Iā€™m less excited by thisā€¦ I donā€™t know what to call it?Ā  Generic sexy fantasy style pattern?Ā  I feel like all of these pieces have been recombined from pre-existing patterns.
Ā  8720 ā€“ Good job on picking up that it is the 25th anniversary of Hocus Pocus!Ā  Iā€™m not even sure Disney has grasped that yetā€¦Ā  Iā€™ve not seen crazy heavy advertising about re-release special editions or anything.Ā  In regards to the pattern, I do wish these Sanderson sisters were a bit more detailed in the designs, but, bravo to Simplicity for winning at the cultural relevance game.
Ā  8721 ā€“ One should never pass by a good cape pattern.Ā  The hood shape looks really great, and the cape is nice and full.
Ā  8722 ā€“ Once again, Iā€™m sure the internet will inform me, but Iā€™m not quite sure which franchise Simplicity is referencing here?Ā  There are certainly shows I watch where jumpsuits are ā€œthe lookā€ but this pattern is much baggier and less fitted than the styles used in those shows.Ā  The tan one is a veryĀ Ghostbusters vibe, but Iā€™m not sure if that is the reference Iā€™m supposed to be picking up on here?
Ā  8724 ā€“ Kids Star Wars/Superhero costumes.Ā  Really versatile, and really cute.
Ā  8725 ā€“ Nice to see Ariel added to the Disney Princess lineup.
Ā  8726 ā€“ Super generic kids costumes.
Ā  8727 ā€“ More generic kids costumes.
Ā  8728 ā€“ Cool way to do a mermaid tail in this pattern.
Ā  8729 ā€“ Kids capes, because, capes!
Ā  5628 ā€“ Jiffy pattern re-release.Ā  This literally is a piece of fabric folded in half, with two partial seams, and a neck opening.Ā  Pass.
Ā  9192 ā€“ Menā€™s vintage ties are kinda cool.Ā  Not the massively wide one, but the skinny tie or bow tie could be useful.
And thatā€™s it!Ā  On the whole my top picks for this release really are in the craft/costume/cosplay realm.Ā  Not too much new or exciting in the main release.Ā  There is a lot of stuff I found ā€œcuteā€ but not much I felt needed to be added to the collection.Ā  What do you all think?Ā  See anything that is going to kick-start your fall sewing?Ā  Or are we waiting for the bigger releases coming later next month?Ā  Feel free to discuss in the comments!
