I read Backstage Lens Flare recently, and I wanted to guesstimate how Tomomi Ohara looks
#hunter's art#project sekai#hatsune miku colorful stage#also an attempt to draw in the prsk art style#I'm kind of salty that he didn't get a live 2D but the guy that showed up for 2 minutes did#(yes I'm aware why that might be the case. the other guy will probably show up again in the future and ohara most likely will not)#still. I wanted to try this out#rui kamishiro#tomomi ohara#edited: I forgot his glasses in the second doodle

Are there any characters that canonly have bad eyesight/glasses? Like ik kohane wears glasses in one of her untrained cards, but is that canon or is that just for the card's aesthetic?
I'm assuming you haven't read VBS main story because Kohane wears glasses for a decent chunk of that and switching to contacts is part of her character development (to appear more confident). She wears them in her woao untrained because it was late at night and she would've taken them out by then.
KAITO in School SEKAI has glasses as part of his original outfit and is shown wearing them to read sheet music, though the glasses were removed post-3rd anniversary. None of the other MCs need glasses, but Haruka and occasionally Airi wear fake ones when out and about to avoid being spotted. In terms of side characters, there's Keisuke, Mafuyu's dad, Reki, Sakaki, the More More House Landlady, and Hiiragi who all wear glasses. There's also Hibiki Miyake, Shuuta Hayashi, and Tomomi Ohara who don't have Live2D models but are illustrated with them.

I agree there’s absolutely something going on with Sakaki and he’s being foreshadowed as a future antagonist, but I disagree about Ohara -
This is the first thing we hear about him:
Bakuno: Yes. Director Tomomi Ohara is still in his mid-30s, he's quite young for movie director, but he is a well-regarded individual in the industry.
[…]
Bakuno: But um…. This is a bit difficult to say, but director Ohara tends to get overly heated when it comes to the production…
[…]
Bakuno: Yes. It seems like there are reports of him making unreasonable demands with the actors and staffs, and coming off as quite blunt. So, it might be a good idea for everyone to be mentally prepared.
Bakuno: But despite that, the final result is impressive, and there seems to be a deep trust from those who have stayed with the director until the end.
Rui: (So, it seems that he's the type whose desire to create something great goes a bit too far)
Rui: (.......It's not something that should be praised, but I can understand that sentiment a bit)
(BLF CH1 - TL Tsukasa’s #3 fan)
Which is where he’s kind of set up as a (less harsh) Prima Donna Director. He’s an extremely passionate director who asks a lot of those he’s directing, but those who are skilled enough/serious enough to stay with him trust him a lot - which, as Rui says, isn’t something to be praised, but it *is* something Rui can relate to (gestures at RMD).
He approaches Rui the day after Rui takes initiative with rebinding the scripts to include both the old and new versions, and after the assistant director emphasizes that WxS have been capable of filling the shoes of the people who quit and have been doing it quite well.
[he offers to let rui look at what they just shot, rui picks up on some directing stuff]
Director Ohara: Yes, that's a good thing you've picked up on.
Rui: It may be obvious, but there's a big difference in atmosphere between when you're watching on set and when you're watching through the camera.
Rui: It's because the visual perspective differs depending on the cut, no?
Director Ohara: There are many differences between stage and film... but I think the biggest one is use of perspective.
Rui: use of perspective…
Director Ohara: The only perspective on stage is the audience's eyes — a camera facing the stage directly from one specific angle.
Director Ohara: In contrast, film is very different. By using multiple cameras, one space can be viewed in various ways from all angles.
Director Ohara: ... What do you think the advantages of this are?
Rui: ... It would be easier for the production side to control the audience's viewpoint through video than through stage.
Director Ohara: That's right. At least, it's much easier to manipulate the audience's impression through film than it is through stage, where the camera is fixed at one point.
Director Ohara: The scene we shot today is one such example. By changing the brightness of the screen and the number of cuts between cameras, you can manipulate the impression of the characters even in similar scenes.
Rui: …that’s right…
Director Ohara: Well, a movie is a movie, so there is still the disadvantage that it's difficult to create the same intensity that screams "this is a real person" in film than it is on stage
Director Ohara: What’s interesting, though, is that by controlling perspective in this way, you can get closer to the audience's hearts.
Director Ohara: …Well, that might not be useful to you as someone who's aiming to become a stage director.
(CH4 TL haruka’s penguin)
For him to take time out of his break to teach some random kid about directing is pretty notable, but I think the most important part of this exchange (and what most clearly explains Ohara’s mindset around directing) is this:
[Rui says he wants to learn abt all kinds of directing]
Director Ohara: ... Well, if you're serious about what you want, you do have to have the guts to do it.
Director Ohara: l've met so many spineless people that, before I knew it, I couldn't believe that any younger people were serious, but you seem to be a little different.
Director Ohara: So - to honour that big dream and the guts you have to pursue it, I'll teach you.
(CH4 TL haruka’s penguin)
There’s a big culture about sticking through unpleasant work if you want to make it in the arts world - to network, to find other opportunities, to work your way up from the bottom, etc - and Ohara is of the opinion that those who can’t put up with his high standards and difficult demands just aren’t serious enough. Kind of reminds me of Amami Seiichi in tsukasa3 talking about how if you’re getting nervous to perform in front of a famous person you don’t deserve to perform at all. (Kind of a bummer & not something I agree with but that’s an entirely different discussion.)
Despite all of that, he changes his mind seeing how determined Rui is - to him, Rui has proven that he *is* very serious about pursuing his dream of directing, which is why he decides to take him under his wing for the rest of the shooting.
Ohara doesn’t encourage Rui to skip dinner/stay up late thinking about the scene they’re struggling with/leave lunch - that’s all Rui. It’s all stuff that Ohara does himself (& Bakuno), but notably he actually encourages Rui to go eat dinner before they’re interrupted by Sakaki.
Director Ohara: In any case, you should go back already. There's still tomorrow, so you should eat dinner in the hotel—-
(CH5 TL arvon oven)
He didn’t gain anything out of Rui doing this, and he also didn’t really gain anything out of teaching Rui - the solution for shooting the scene is figured out by both Rui and Ohara independently.
Rui: And — to the director, as well, I am truly grateful to you for giving me the opportunity.
Rui: Really... thank you very much for everything you've done.
Director Ohara: ... I approached you because of your own good work.
Director Ohara: Whenever you have time, please come and assist me again. I'd welcome you.
(CH8 TL haruka’s penguin)
As he said himself, he approached Rui because he saw Rui’s talent and determination. And even when WxS have all left and he’s just talking to Sakaki, he still talks Rui up.
Director Ohara: …But thinking about it again, I'm amazed Kamishiro managed to get there with your nonsensical words.
(CH8 TL haruka’s penguin)
I think Ohara is - setting aside his intensity and exacting standards - a pretty good guy. Everyone in WxS (save Emu, I guess, given she’s more focused on PxL than acting/directing) has done really intense and unhealthy things for the sake of pursuing their dreams in performing/directing. Nene practiced more than was healthy in on this holy night/canary and went through crazy training in canary, Tsukasa did the whole fasting thing in Phoenix, even outside of this event Rui is known to forgo sleeping to get work done.
Whether or not colopale is going to address this in a big way or go the shounen “it’s actually super epic to run yourself ragged pursuing your dream” route is something I go back and forth on, but Ohara also skipping meals and staying late to work makes me think they might not. It seems to be portrayed as a sign that you’re Really Serious About This and not as. Yknow. A pretty unhealthy habit. The capitalist “the grind never stops” mindset is truly pervasive. I think the people working under Ohara should join a union.
UHM GUYS...
So my friend @anakirui was reading the event and we came across those specific lines and....
DIRECTOR OOHARA WAS BASICALLY USING WXS FOR HIS OWN MEANS, EXPLOITING THEIR YOUTH
THERE IS A VERY LIKELYHOOD THAT HE WAS JUST USING RUI
WHICH MAKES THE COMM AND THIS SCENE...
MAKES A LOT MORE SENSE WITH CONTEXT
WHICH PRETTY MUCH KINDA CONFIRMS MY GUT FEELING WITH MY CYBERPUNK DEADBOY ANALYSIS
This also has a very concerning impact on Rui
Like he actively starts spending less time with WxS.
He starts taking care of himself less, focusing really hard on working for this director including not sleeping and skipping meals.
He constantly makes excuses for the director's dubious action (sakaki and oohara)
He shows a lot of unhealthy behaviors in this event and the fact that he basically now brought the attention of scummy directors like Oohara and now most likely Sakaki is very concerning
Also my friend pointed out that when Sakaki says Rui's last name, it's always misspelled. Which makes think it's to show that Sakaki doesn't really give a shit about Rui or more so doesn't respect him already to the point where his name can't even bothered to be spelled correctly (also with the fact that despite saying hi to rui he literally forgot he existed)
So yep shit's fucked everybody o7 we had a nice run
