An Interview with TOMMYGUNN

Recording with icons, working in LA, and more

Tommy Grasley aka TOMMYGUNN is a Hamilton native making a name for himself in rock and roll. He has gone from lip-syncing “Surfin U.S.A” by the Beach Boys at The Grimsby Community Centre as a kid, to working with iconic artists like Dale Harrison, Eddie Kramer, and Ian Andrews. Growing up in Hamilton, Ontario in a musical family - as the son of saxophonist Sonny Del Rio and once removed cousin of Rod Stewart - rock and roll is practically in his blood. But TOMMYGUNN has established himself as an artist of his own merit, with his brand-new album I Believe in Love released this past February. Lots of big things are on the horizon for this Canadian rocker.

“I write about my own personal experiences and as my journey unfolds and I’m walking the path and experiencing things … that’s really what I write about”

TOMMYGUNN’s sophomore album, I Believe in Love, is a journey from hate to love across 11 songs, exploring different genres along the way. When asked about the inspiration to write about that journey, Tommy revealed that it is about his life experiences, “I was in a not very nice relationship, and I found true love and my soulmate, my wife … my life changed and inspired my whole album, and that’s how that came about,” he recalled to me. Grasley always keeps it real, writing about his own personal experiences, “walking the path” of his own life and writing killer tunes along the way. Every song on the album is raw and based off of real experiences and emotions from his life.

The experience of recording the album truly sounded one of a kind. Big names, friends and family from all over came together in the Rose Room Studio in Toronto, Ontario to produce I Believe in Love. “I was very fortunate to have a friend in Michael Wekerle, one of the Dragons on Dragon’s Den,” Tommy says. “I wrote a song about King Biscuit Boy aka Richard Newell. The song is called ‘Richard’ ... Michael Wekerle plays on that song, and Galen Weston the owner of the Rose Room Studio plays guitar on that as well as Ian Andrews, and my father plays an unbelievable sax lead and solo. I have a video of Eddie Kramer bowing to my father in the studio. Yeah, it’s a really really fun experience,” he added. Grasley also had some friends come together for one of the heavier songs on his album, both sonically and thematically: “My friends were in on the sessions too from Varga, Joe Varga and Dan Fila from Sven Gali ... They play on a song I wrote about Junction 66, it’s about a friend of mine. Mike King actually wrote the music to it, I wrote the lyrics. It’s about our friend who got murdered in 1989, we all went to school with him so it was a special song, we all recorded it and it’s a metal song. So it’s really fun,” Tommy explained. Metal is among one of the four genres he explores on the record, with some other songs sounding more classic rock and blues inspired. Continuing on the recording experience, he mentioned another icon, Greg Godovitz, “I wrote a song with Greg Godovitz, Goddo, and Greg also lent his voice for background vocals ... so did Joey Varga on a lot of songs. So, it was a real thrill with icons, and my favourite icons … Goddo was a huge inspiration in my life when I was a kid. Great music though. Yeah, it was a lot of fun,” sounds like TOMMYGUNN is living the dream!

When asked about his upbringing and how that shaped him as an artist, as well as getting his start, he revealed, “I grew up in Hamilton because [of] my parents, my father (Sonny Del Rio) is a musician. He played in a band called Crowbar, and Ray Materik, and before that a band called Terra Nye Experiment. [On] my mom’s side, my cousin’s Rod Stewart, [he’s] my grandfather’s cousin really so he’s my cousin once removed .. What I’m saying is music was all around me and creativity and love and everything, you know. It’s feast or famine [but] it was still a lovely upbringing in Hamilton.” A star-studded family like that must feel like a lot to live up to, but Tommy is doing a fantastic job. His first performance was at the Grimsby Community Centre, he told me. “I did Surfin U.S.A, I lip synced on a stage show … when I was 12 at the Grimsby Community Centre. But as TOMMYGUNN, it was at a place called Sealed Art on Gage Avenue and Main Street. It’s right on the corner, I played upstairs as TOMMYGUNN’s first show there. Yeah, for friends and family, it was fun,” he added.

 TOMMYGUNN is always open to collaborating, and while he didn’t reveal any names, he hinted at some pretty exciting collaborations that are set to happen in Los Angeles, so we’ll all be keeping an eye out for that. Although he is based in Canada, he is definitely establishing some roots in Los Angeles as well, with family ties. “I’m fortunate because my wife is a writer and producer in feature film and television, and her whole family are in feature film and television; and two of her brothers live in Los Angeles so it’s really great. We had a blast, I was there for six weeks. Met a lot of really interesting, very cool people, and that’s why I’m going to record my next album there. Yeah, it’s a really cool place,” he said when asked about his time in L.A. earlier this year, doing some album promo and radio shows.

 Not only falling in love with the city, but all parts of it, “the canyons and Calabassas, and West Hollywood, you know it’s gorgeous.” His trip to L.A. sounds like, well, a trip: from meeting Gene Simmons while out for coffee, and being VIPs at the Easyriders launch party, TOMMYGUNN is certainly living the rock and roll lifestyle! “We go for a run, Amy and I go for a run or a brisk walk every morning .. we went to a place and ordered Starbucks, and grabbed our coffee, and there was Gene and Shannon. So we actually talked to Shannon first for about 15 minutes. They had a full film crew there and everything, they were filming something, and so we talked to Shannon for about 15 minutes and I talked to Gene for a full half hour on camera … Yeah it was kinda cool. And you know, I have a friend out there who bought a magazine recently and he’s doing really well. I’ve made a lot of really good friends in Los Angeles, and some great connections, so you know that’s why definitely I’m gonna record there and have a bunch of friends help me out there. I’ve already written the album while we’ve been on this downtime. Yeah so, I’m excited. Lots of connections in L.A.,” I can tell it’s only up from here for TOMMYGUNN.

 However, all plans for travel to record and perform have been put to a halt while the world is social distancing. From the sounds of it though, during quarantine TOMMYGUNN has been gearing up for the future from the comfort of home. He is still promoting his newest release, which is doing well in Toronto. While a new album is in the works that he’s very excited about, it’s not over yet for I Believe in Love. Tommy says that he thinks it’s the best work he’s ever done, and gives a taste of what is to come. I wasn’t given the title of the next record, but a few hints were dropped: “It was something that happened to me in Vancouver, that’s what it’s going to be about,” we can only imagine what stories he’s going to tell on album number 3. Like I Believe in Love, the next TOMMYGUNN project will also be a concept album, and it will be recorded over on the west coast in Los Angeles. In the meantime, a cross-Canada tour is in the works. Although, of course, it had to be pushed back due to the current craziness in the world.

 What can we expect next from TOMMYGUNN? Lots. “Lots more of everything,” he revealed, and that the creative juices are flowing rapidly. “You know, I’m not one to say it’s going to be this or that, I’m just doing the journey and whatever happens, happens … I’m very excited about the next album, quite frankly, really excited. I’m really excited about [I Believe in Love], because this album, the message seems to be needed now, and like it couldn’t have been more perfect timing. I released it on Valentine’s Day and then all this stuff started happening ... you know, everybody really needs to love each other and be kind to each other….not be so judgemental, you know. It’s really needed,” well said, Tommy. All we can do right now is spread love and listen to TOMMYGUNN’s album!
