No Spoilers!
Wade & Logan & Reader
A/N: Another bad thing that wasn't planned at all. I got the idea this morning, and decided to speed-write it right now just to get rid of it.. Sucks to be me.
Summary: Wade and Logan are bickering about spoilers. Not a big deal.... right? (Also on AO3)
Warnings: Tickling, swearing
Word Count: 2K
They were going to be home soon. You could hear their trademark bickering in the distance. Voices raised. A pitch here and there from Wade. Your lips curled up. Oh, these two.
Althea turned her head to you and grinned. "Looks like we can kiss the peace goodbye," she said. Blind Al was actually the reason you started to come over. After Deadpool and Wolverine had saved you from some nasty business and you asked them however you could repay them, Deadpool had looked you up and down after which he rubbed his hands.
"I know just the thing for you."
It almost sounded like a punishment. Some shady stuff they'd pull you in to repay your debts. But no, it was actually rather sweet. The big favor they asked you was to sometimes stop by and accompany Blind Al when they were gone. And walk Dogpool.
Blind Al, or Althea, was such a kind lady, but did not have many people in her life except Deadpool and his chaotic team of friends. And Dogpool could use more attention too if Wade and Logan were too busy.
Which was why you started to come over every now and then, and with it came the bonus that you could hang out with Wade and Logan and enjoy their quirky antics.
At first it was a funny and strange thought that the infamous Deadpool & Wolverine lived here together in this small apartment, together with their blind roommate and funny dog. But you had gotten used to it pretty fast, and even felt quite at home with them. And with time, it was as if they felt the same, trusting you more and more.
They had started to involve you in their missions, taking your advice seriously, letting you help come up with plans, and even allowing you to assist with making some very important decisions.
"No! You spoiled it!" you heard Wade's voice getting louder as they were almost home.
Some inaudible grumbling from Wolverine could be heard in return, until the door slammed open and they took their argument inside.
"Totally spoiled it! We can kiss our big reveal goodbye."
"There was never going to be a big reveal."
"Oh there sure was. You and I both agreed to it. When we agree to build up something towards a big reveal, you can't just Tom Holland it. But you did. You said it straight to the press."
"They overheard, that's something else."
"Oh so you admit it! You admit that you were spreading spoilers! On live TV!"
"It wasn't live! And it wasn't a spoiler."
"The cameras were totally rolling! Just you watch, they'll use it on the show and next we know is it'll cover the headlines!"
"Wade shut the fuck up. I never told any spoilers, I only said ー"
They froze and looked at you and Blind Al as you two had been listening to their little quarrel in silence. You nodded.
"Spoilers eh," you said dryly. Wade immediately changed his attitude and spread his arms.
"Oh hiiiiiii! We're so back! Our day went so well! Boss-fighting here! Celebrity interview there! Totally followed the script you gave us, well, for most of the part. Missed me?"
"What was the spoiler?" you asked curiously, ignoring everything else he said. Wade gasped.
"Spoiler? Spoiler. I have no idea what you're talking about, oh wait, I actually do. This guy over here is a pain in the stinkin' ass who ruins surprises. Who ruins fun. Right, Logan? That's what you do. You ruin fun. Logan the fun-ruiner."
Logan shook his head at Wade's ramling and rolled his eyes. "Whatever you say, Wade."
"Can I hear the spoiler too?" you asked Logan curiously as you got up from the couch, but Wade quickly jumped in between you and pushed you right back where you sat next to Blind Al.
"NO! No you cannot! Totally classified. Don't say it, Logan. Not again. I'm warning you."
"I wasn't going to," Logan said in disbelief. You sighed and jumped up again.
"If you spoiled it once, you can spoil it again. I want to he-Ehey!" you laughed when Wade pinched your side.
"I can't have you encourage the spoilerer to spoil spoilers!" Wade said, squeezing your side repeatedly. You jumped around and giggled, trying to escape his grip.
"Whahat kind ohohof t-tongue-twihihister is that!" you laughed. You couldn't see Wade's face beneath his mask, but you were sure he was smirking.
"Not as bad as this tongue-twister right here," he said before attacking you with both hands. Well your tongue didn't twist in any way, but you sure let out a loud shriek and tried to flee, tripped over Dogpool and stumbled clumsily into Logan's arms.
"That's it, the big wolf's got you. No escaping now!" Wade sang as he tickled both your sides.
"Nohoho lehehet me go- ahhahah!!" you cackled, realizing Logan wasn't going to let you through as he blocked you with his arms.
"Remind me why this is happening?" he asked casually while Wade continued to tickle you. Wade shrugged.
"It's how to deal with spoiler people I guess. After this, it's your turn."
"I don't think so. I'll make this count for two," Logan said, and to your surprise you suddenly felt his fingers dig into your sides - a remarkable, much firmer kind of tickling feeling than Wade's, and you trembled and shook in his arms.
"Wahahaha you two! Cuhuhut it out!" You struggled and flailed, but Logan tightened his hold on you while he tickled you with ease. Wade was dancing along with you, clawing up and down your ribs and all over your tummy as well. It tickled so bad.
"Guhuhuys! Ahhhaahah nohoho!" You struggled hysterically but failed to escape as their fingers continued to torment you.
"Tickles, doesn't it?" Wade asked smugly.
"Hehehell nohoho!" you laughed defiantly. People who ask stupid questions get stupid answers - but you also learned that those who give those stupid answers... well yes, they get punished.
Somehow you could get even more ticklish, as Wade spidered his fingers rapidly all over your tummy, while Logan was just moving from your sides to your stomach.
"Out of the way Logan! Or did you do that on purpose, hmm?" Wade said seductively when they bumped hands trying to tickle you in the same spot, and Wade teasingly interlocked their fingers in a romantic way. Seeing both of them with one hand occupied, you immediately bolted out of Logan's arms and tried to make a run for it.
"Oh no you don't!"
You let out a loud squeal when Wade literally tackled you, and you could hear Blind Al laughing at your predicament.
"It's good to have a laugh sometimes!" she encouraged. Well, this was more than just laughing. This was bloody murder.
"AHAAHAH WAhahade! Nohoho why- eheeheh!" you cried as Wade wiggled his fingers rapidly all over your torso. Your eyes widened when Logan kneeled by your side, and he grabbed both your wrists and pulled your arms up, stretching them over your head.
"Looks like fun," he commented dryly.
"Thanks bro~!" Wade thanked him before immediately tickling you your now very exposed and vulnerable armpits. You threw your head back and howled for your life.
"Thiihis ihihisn't fahahair! Aahahaha!" Life had always been weird and random ever since you got involved with Deadpool and Wolverine. But this was something that had never happened before. Sure it wasn't the first time Wade tickled you, he did it a lot actually.
But for some reason, Logan was now also motivated to join, and they both tickled you until you cried tears of laughter.
"This is almost like an inauguration ceremony, isn't it?" Wade said.
You wanted to ask for the meaning of that, but you were laughing too much. Luckily Logan already did it: "An inauguration for what?"
"For the DW Manager part of course!" Wade then gulped. He immediately stopped tickling you. Logan was still merely pinning your arms, and he nodded.
"Now you spoiled it, Wade."
Wade gasped. "I did not."
"Did too."
"Oh quit yapping and just tell us what's going on," Blind Al suddenly complained from behind you guys.
"Riiiight. Wade looked at you as you still lay there, all tired and breathless, and he chuckled.
"Well, I guess it's truth time then. So DP (me), and this stinky wolf over here," he said, poking Logan, "we were thinking to promote you officially to be our manager. What do you think? An invincible team like us, will need an invincible manager, and you may totally fit the job."
You frowned. First they tickled you to death and now they were... trying to, kinda, hire you? Talk about random.
"...But I don't have any powers."
"Except for being ticklish as fucking fuck, no you don't. But! You've got people skills. And what do you think, does Happy Hogan have any powers? No! But he kicked ass with Iron Man by his side. Oh and we can build your physical endurance, hehe," Wade poked your side to demonstrate, making you jump and yelp.
Deadpool laughed at that and continued:
"...and we just like to have you by our side, and make it official. What do you say? Will you be promoted from blind roommate caretaker and dog walker to the official Deadpool & Wolverine manager? Short: DW Manager?"
You couldn't help but giggle and nodded. "S-sure," you laughed.
"Fantastic!" Wade gave you a high five, and immediately used that hand to help you back on your feet. Logan patted your shoulder.
"You know Wade, he sometimes does weird things. He just wanted to do something to make sure you won't abandon him."
"Hey! Like giving a name tag to a dog? God no! That's our manager now, and we're going to be so much more badass together," he yelled.
"Well then, as your manager, I do hope that death by tickling is no longer something I'll need to experience," you said. Wade chuckled and poked you again.
"That would totally depend on how you do your job."
Logan let out a charming laugh. "What he probably means is, he'll still tickle you to death whether you like it or not."
"What about you?" you asked him, and Logan shrugged.
"I don't know. As the fun-ruiner, I might need to give some extra effort sometimes. After all, that was kind of fun," Logan explained calmly, smirking at you. You heard Blind Al laugh.
"It sure was," she said. Well, if all of them liked it that much... You grinned.
"Geez. Well, just next time, at least one time-out please."
That got both Deadpool and Wolverine nodding.
"Deal!"
Epilogue:
Wade and Logan looked cozy on the little sofa together as you walked in. Their voices could be heard through the room, but they weren't talking. It was their interview on TV that was playing.
"So the two of you basically do it all by yourselves? Fighting villains, dealing with the damages, public appearances, and all?"
"Yes, we totally do," Wade answered proudly, and while the interviewer answered and continued to speak, the camera slowly zoomed in on Wade and Logan, with Logan mumbling softly to Wade:
"Deadpool's taking all the credit huh? I think we've got someone at home who's being doing a lot of the work lately. We basically got a manager."
"Shhh, don't say that out loud yet!" Wade hissed, but his own whisper was interrupted by the non-TV Wade's loud scream which could be heard through the apartment as he pointed frantically at the TV. "SEE! THEY CAUGHT IT! SPOILER! ALERT!"
Logan and you snickered and exchanged glances. "That was the spoiler? You didn't say that much."
"I know right? He's just being dramatic. Overreacting is his thing."
"Agreed." Wade heard and his finger that was pointing at the TV was now aimed at you.
"That's it, you two do not team up on me like that or I'll tickle both of you to sudden death!"
"We're not teaming up," you said innocently, but Logan already got up and got the hell out of here. Maybe you should have followed his example.
"No Wahahade please- Aaaaaaaaaaaah!"
Well, just another day in your life as the manager of Deadpool & Wolverine!

i've known you for a few years now, playing your on-screen big brother and all, yet you still haven't fully grasped that being spidey comes with constant attention. maybe you should consider dating someone completely unknown; it could solve most of your privacy issues. still, it's not like i'm rolling in cash after taxes, you know? my credit score is solid, no doubt about it, but affording to live downtown los angeles? that's a stretch. you've got a two-bedroom place?
it's not the money that's the problem. it's the constant invasion of privacy and the lack of being able to keep something to yourself my friend. wait a minute and back up, you're pretty well known and last i checked outter banks was a well watched show lately you should have your own small fortune by now? if not you need to talk to the ones in charge mate. i mean you can take over my flat but it's only a two bedroom and not over lavish so good luck?
#( replies : tom holland. )#/// there goes his idea of offering to be his roommate... like.. level up tom

instead of you [part thirty-two] || l.mh
pairing: [best friend’s brother] lee minho x college!reader ft. han jisung
summary: you didn’t expect to spend your summer pretending to be your best friend’s girlfriend- then again, you didn’t expect to fall for your best friend’s brother, either.
warnings: swearing, angst, mentions of sex (mdni ; 18+)
word count: 2.2k
a/n: revamped my tom holland series from my main blog ( @wazzupmrstark ) to try and motivate myself to finish it!!
series masterlist | early access to the next chapter on ko-fi
The first time you met Jisung was at a party on campus. It was a month into your first semester of college and one of the frats had passed out fliers in the residence halls in the hopes of getting lots of the freshman girls to attend.
You had dragged your roommate with you, insisting that you needed to get out there and start meeting people since you were each other’s only friends thus far.
But the joke was on you because she ditched you not even five minutes after arriving, having recognized an ex-boyfriend from her hometown. You didn’t hold it against her, you had been the one to convince her to come in the first place and you understood the whole ex thing.
But you were a lot shyer back then, less confident. So you stumbled your way through the house until you reached the kitchen. No one had offered to make you a drink yet so you figured you might as well make one yourself. You’d need a little liquid courage if you were going to get the balls to talk to any of these people anyway.
That’s where you ran into Jisung. He was bent over the stove cooking what looked to be a grilled cheese sandwich. He turned his head when he heard you come in and nodded at you in acknowledgement.
“Want one?” he asked.
“What is it?”
“Grilled ham and cheese.”
You nodded. “Hit me.”
He finished simmering the one in the pan and slid it onto a paper plate before grabbing the ingredients for yours.
“How long have you lived here?” you asked conversationally.
“Oh, I don’t live here.”
“Are you a pledge then?”
“No.”
“You’re not… affiliated with this frat?”
“Nope.”
“Are your friends?”
“Nah.”
“So you’re just…”
“Stealing their food? Kind of.”
You shrugged. “I won’t tell.”
He cracked a smile. “Good, because I’d really regret making you a sandwich if you did.”
You hadn’t noticed until that point but he had an accent.
“English?” you asked.
“Yes, that’s what we’re speaking. Why, do you know another language?”
You rolled your eyes. “You know what I meant.”
“No, I’m from Korea, actually,” he explained after chuckling. “But my English tutor was British so I picked up a little bit of an accent.”
“What made you decide to come all the way over here?”
“A mix of things, really,” he sighed.
“You’re probably tired of that question, I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s okay. I just don’t have an interesting answer or anything so conversations usually fizzle out after that.”
“I get it. It’s like when everyone in your hometown asks you what you’re going to study and what job you’re getting your degree for.”
“Pretty much,” he agreed. “Your grilled cheese is ready.”
He plated the sandwich and handed it to you, turning the stove off and depositing the pan and spatula in the sink.
“Thank you!”
“You might want to let it cool down a bit, though.”
“Yes, chef.”
He gave you a look, making you freeze in place.
“What? Should I not call you that?”
“No, it’s just- I’m a culinary major. I’m always saying that to my professors but no one’s ever said that to me before. I know you didn’t mean it mean it but it sounded weird.”
“I was just referencing Hell’s Kitchen,” you admitted.
“Just so you know, not all chefs are like Gordon Ramsay.”
“Only the majority?”
He winked at you. “Bingo.”
“So if you don’t want me to call you ‘chef’, what should I call you?”
“I never said I didn’t want you to call me that,” he clarified. “But you can call me Jisung.”
“Jisung. Nice name.”
“Thanks. Do you have one?”
You grinned. “I do.”
He gave an exasperated little sigh. “And what is it?”
You told him, leaning forward and whispering it like it was a secret.
“You have a nice name too.”
“Thank you.”
“By the way, your sandwich should be cool enough to eat by now.”
You leaned back against the island and took a bite of your grilled cheese. Jisung gauged your reaction, raising his eyebrows expectantly.
“Good?”
“Great. Best grilled cheese sandwich I’ve ever had.”
“Don’t fuck with me,” he warned.
“I’m not! Listen, I can’t cook for shit so I’m very easy to impress.”
“I’ll take your word for it. It’s better for my ego if I ignore the last part.”
“I can make a mean Moscow Mule, though. My talents lie in mixology, not gastronomy.”
“Make me a drink, then?” he asked.
“Gladly.”
You set your paper plate on the counter and made your way over to the fridge.
“Let’s see what they have in here.”
“Oh, now you’re the one stealing food?”
“Guess that makes us partners in crime.”
You fell silent as you looked over the contents of the refrigerator, gathering a bottle of orange juice and half-empty jar of raspberry jam. You checked the expiration dates before continuing because you didn’t trust frat guys and then set them on the island with a handle of tequila that had been left out.
Jisung watched as you spooned the jam into an empty solo cup, visibly skeptical. You couldn’t blame him for not trusting you, you had just met him, after all. You poured the orange juice in next and mixed the two together, finally adding a shot and a half of tequila.
“Don’t want to get you too drunk,” you explained.
He scoffed. “You think that’ll do me in? I’m Korean, remember?”
“Fine, suit yourself.”
You poured what you approximated to be another shot of tequila into the cup. You filled another cup with ice from a nearby cooler and poured the contents of the first cup into it. Instead of shaking them and risking making a huge mess, you rolled them between the cups until you were satisfied that everything was properly mixed.
You presented Jisung with your creation, eyes shining. “Here you go! It’s a makeshift tequila sunrise.”
Jisung reached for it but you stopped him abruptly. “Wait! Hold on.”
You took a sip of the drink yourself, just to make sure it was actually palatable, before passing it off to him.
“Sorry, wanted to check.”
“Not confident in your abilities all of the sudden?“ he mused.
“I’m trying something new, you grumbled defensively, “artists make mistakes. I’m not above admitting that and therefore want to quality check my products to make sure it’s good enough for my consumers.”
“Didn’t realize you were taking this so seriously.”
“I take everything seriously.”
He eyed you suspiciously. “Something tells me that’s not true.”
-
That night, and all the others you spent with Jisung flashed before your eyes like some sort of sick slideshow as you stood there with him in the hallway. The fractures in the glass were beyond repair now, spindling inward threatening to shatter.
You supposed it was what you deserved, watching your relationship with your best friend crumble right in front of you.
“Why do you ask?” you said quietly, still testing the waters.
“You think I haven’t noticed you sneaking off every night?” Jisung demanded.
“Uh-”
“At first, I thought you just needed some space. And I understood because you’ve been stuck with us for over a month now, but then it happened every night and you’d be gone for so long,” he sighed. “So finally, I followed you-”
“You what?”
“I know, I’m such a bad friend for invading your privacy.” His voice was dripping with sarcasm and you could already feel the tears welling up.
You tried to hold them back because you didn’t deserve to cry. You’d put yourself in this situation, and you knew it was wrong, but you still did it anyway. You clutched your towel closer to your body, trying to shrink into yourself.
“I heard what I needed to,” he continued. “So how long have you been fucking my brother?”
“Jisung, I-”
“I asked you a question.”
“Long enough,” you muttered. “He found out we weren’t actually dating. I didn’t tell him-”
“That makes it better?”
“No, I just thought you should know.”
“What does it matter anyway,” he spat. “We had an agreement. You had one task and you couldn’t even do it. I should have never invited you on this goddamn trip.”
You couldn’t help but agree. “I’m sorry.”
Jisung laughed humorlessly and shook his head. “I don’t believe you. If you actually felt any guilt over this you never would have done it. Or you would’ve at least stopped before it got to this point.”
“No, I am sorry,” you tried. “It’s just…”
“Just what?” he asked, eyes widening suddenly. “You’re not pregnant, are you?”
For a fraction of a second, you were thrown back in time. The best friend that didn’t hate you was suddenly standing in front of you, eyes full of concern. It passed just as quickly as it had come when you denied it.
“No, it’s just… I f- I’m in love with him.” You couldn’t even look Jisung in the eye when you said it, too afraid of his reaction.
It was dead silent all throughout the house after your confession. You stared at the floor where a puddle had appeared at your feet from your dripping hair.
He chuckled again in disbelief, breaking the silence.
“You’re not in love with him,” he said matter-of-factly. “You don’t even know what love feels like. You’ve only known him for a fucking month, how could you possibly love him?” You were crying now, furiously wiping away the tears that fell onto your cheeks. “You’re just lonely, y/n, and desperate, and grasping at straws for anything that feels like ‘love’.”
“That’s not true,” you insisted. You weren’t sure why you were trying to defend yourself. He was probably right.
“It is true! I’ve known you for how many years now? You’ve never had a real relationship with anybody. How could you possibly know what love feels like?”
You shook your head adamantly, convincing yourself he didn’t mean what he was saying. “You’re lashing out.”
“Is it lashing out if it’s true?” he quipped.
You swallowed hard, choking a bit.
“I can’t fucking believe this. My best friend and my brother. I went away to school to be on my own and have my own life, and somehow Minho manages to take that too.” He was mostly talking to himself now. “What if someone else had caught you two? How fucked up would that have looked? I put no flirting with my brothers on the list of rules for a reason, obviously. Although I guess it didn’t matter in the end anyway, did it? You didn’t take them or this seriously.”
“Ji, that’s not true and you know that. I’m the one who wrote out those flashcards. I memorized all that stuff about your family. I flew halfway around the world for you— I did take it seriously.”
“Until Minho offered his dick to you on a silver platter?”
“Oh my god!”
“Am I wrong?”
You sighed. “It’s a lot more complicated than that.”
“Explain it to me then. When did this all start anyway?”
“Minho kissed me for the first time in, um, Italy.”
“Oh my god, I’m the biggest fucking idiot in the world,” he groaned.
“But it wasn’t like that then… he still thought we were together then.”
Jisung threw his hands up. “That makes it worse!”
“I know but he was drunk.”
“That’s not an excuse. You of all people should know that.”
You let the dig slide since he was in an emotional state and you were in no position to argue anyway.
“I know.”
“So you guys have been sneaking around behind my back for like a fucking month now?”
“We didn’t sleep together until Shanghai, when he found out we weren’t together. But I feel like I should tell you I kissed him in Japan. Just so that you know everything.”
“Oh, thank you so much,” Jisung deadpanned. “Thank you for being so honest.” He spat the last word at you, which again, was deserved, but hurt nonetheless. You sniffled. “I can’t believe you’re the one crying right now.”
You couldn’t believe that Jisung wasn’t crying but then again he wasn’t the type to cry when he was angry. He only cried when he was sad, and that probably hadn’t hit him yet.
You were starting to get cold wearing nothing but a towel but tried not to let it show. Of course, Jisung noticed instantly. He sighed as you shivered and pursed his lips. Even when he was furious with you, even when your relationship was irreparably damaged, he cared about you. It wasn’t something he could just turn off, though maybe with time, he’d learn to.
“Anyway, go to bed. I’m going to sleep on the couch.”
“O-okay,” you mumbled.
Jisung brushed past you abruptly, muttering to himself loud enough for you to hear.
“God, I wish I’d never fucking met you that night.”
You bit down on your lip as hard as possible to choke down a sob. All you could do was stand there motionlessly and stare at the floor. You waited for him to walk away into the living room but the footsteps stopped suddenly.
“Oh, and a word of advice-”
“Hm?” You turned around to face him, trying your best to pull yourself together.
“You should try getting over your feelings for Minho as fast as possible. He doesn’t love you back. He’s just using you, babe. I know he’s pretty smooth but that’s why he’s so good at his job. Easier said than done, I know, but you’re a smart girl. You’ll figure it out.”

She’s bone-tired, aches in places she didn’t know could ache and muscles stretched out in a way they haven’t been for a long time. Since her physical therapy, at least. The rock climbing a few weeks ago certainly hadn’t helped, but there was no way she was going to stay with her feet rooted to the floor. Not when she could climb up 15 feet and hang there like Spider-man. Better than Spider-man.
Suck it, Tom Holland.
She paid for it later, though, and spent the next day letting her body remember how to stretch, going through yoga poses and washing her breakfast down with ibuprofen.
It was worth it, still, to see the look on Bea’s friend’s faces. Mary was impressed, clapping her on the shoulder when she got to the bottom and telling Camila - who made it up the wall the fastest - that she had competition. Even Lilith regarded her with a level of approval that Ava ate up. She’s going to make Lilith like her. Or at least smile politely, even if it is with all her teeth.
But it was Bea’s face that made it even better.
She hasn’t known Bea long - she’s known others longer, including that one cafeteria lady who always saves her a side of mac and cheese because Ava said one time that it was her favorite - but she already knows that a big part of her wants to impress Bea. She can’t quite put it into words. There’s something about Bea that makes Ava want to show off. Maybe it’s because one thing she’s learned about Beatrice is that her smiles are fleeting. Ava wants to collect every one of them.
She’ll have a lot of opportunities, now that Bea is her friend and her roommate.
“Where do you want this one?” Beatrice asks from the doorway. She’s holding a paper box with tons of smiley faces drawn on it in a thick-tipped permanent marker. There’s a method to her packing madness, but Ava is big enough to admit that she has no idea what’s in this particular box.
“Here is fine.” She shifts in the computer chair Bea got her, a slight pinch in her back.
Bea looks down at the last few inches of floor where Ava points and frowns. “How will you get out?”
Ava lifts her legs, wiggling her socked toes. “I’ll jump. Have you jumped on this bed? Is it a solid bed for jumping?”
“Jumped on the…” Beatrice blinks at her. “No, Ava. I haven’t jumped on the bed.”
Ava shrugs. “You’re missing out. My dorm room was not good jumping material. When’s the last time you jumped on a bed?”
“Nev-never.”
Her mouth drops open. “Never?” She immediately frowns. Beatrice wasn’t kidding when she told her that her life hadn’t been normal kid stuff and her parents were hardly around. They had that in common: a girl who lived in an orphanage and a girl who grew up alone. It makes her a little sad for Bea. “We have to fix this.”
“I am not jumping on the bed,” Bea says firmly.
Ava shrugs. Today is not the day, and tomorrow won’t be either, but soon. She stands and stretches her arms above her head, immediately dropping them so that her shirt doesn’t ride up any higher. Bea seems like the kind of girl who appreciates a little modesty. Ava can do that. Or, she can try really hard to do that.
“I am officially all moved in.” She grins, surveying her kingdom. There’s a desk in one corner, left behind by Bea’s roommate who went to study abroad and didn’t come back. A nightstand by the bed has her lamp and her hat on it. She’ll have to hang her clothes, fill the dresser, find a few posters to put up on the walls. But it’s hers. “So, roomie, what’s next?”
Bea looks around, clasping her hands behind her. “I believe those are all your things.”
“Except for the kitchen stuff.”
“Yes.” There’s a faint smile on Bea’s face and Ava feels a thrill, knowing she put it there. “How could I forget your… hot dog maker.”
“Not sure. It’s fire engine red.” But she looks around too. “I think we’re done. Now we can get ready for movie night!”
A proper end to moving day. Movie night with an Ava-curated predetermined list, tons of drinks and movie theater popcorn and Bea’s friends. She had hesitantly suggested it to Bea a few days ago. She’d never done a movie night and her College Experiences bucket list clearly had it marked as item #8. But Bea had said yes almost immediately, and Ava went to work, making a list of options in between packing and classes and meals with Bea and her friends.
They’re going to be my friends, she decides. That’s on her bucket list too.
Now she just needed them to get here. The minutes have been dragging on as she’s waited as patiently as possible. But time didn’t seem to be cooperating. It’s doing its best to drag its heels. Ava wants to grab it by the neck and shake it.
Bea seems to notice that. “They’ll be here soon.” She says it very patiently, like she already knows Ava does terrible with waiting. And Ava likes that. She likes that Bea is paying attention to her enough to notice these things.
Bea’s going to be a great roommate. Ava wants to be just as good. She looks around her room, satisfied. She can unpack later - there’s enough space to get from the bed to the door and Bea insisted she make the bed first, almost like she knew that Ava was going to stack everything in insurmountable piles and try her best to get around them.
See? she thinks. She knows me already.
She’s about to say that, to tell Bea that she’s already killing this ‘best roommate’ contest that Bea doesn’t know they’re having, when someone knocks on the door. Once, twice, three times.
Ava does jump on the bed this time, beating Beatrice to the door and pulling it open to find Camila on the other side.
Ava beams. “Movie night!”
~
“Is the whole movie about… biking?” Lilith makes it seem like a swear word.
Ava grins, shoves a handful of popcorn into her mouth, and says, “id bub nimnasts.” Everyone turns to her. She swallows and smiles more sheepishly this time. “It’s about gymnastics.”
Lilith heaves a long-suffering sound. “Gymnastics.” It’s really a testament to her disdain for everyday things, that everything that comes out of her mouth sounds like she’s spitting it from between her teeth. But then the running biker rips off her helmet and it’s Missy Peregrym and even Lilith seems interested.
Ava gets it. She does. This is peak Missy Peregrym. And it only gets better. She stops watching the movie when Missy Peregrym’s character, Haley, finds her way back to the gym and on Vanessa Lengies’ character, Joanne’s, last nerve and starts watching the room instead. Onscreen, Haley pretends to be on the phone while Joanne stomps her foot angrily, and Mary snorts, lips curled up in a smile, and that’s when Ava knows this is a good choice.
She wants to impress them so badly. It consumes her. Partly because she thinks they’re really cool, even Lilith. And partly because she thinks Bea is amazing and these people agree. Sister Frances always told her to stop wasting her time and do everyone the favor of aligning herself with the right people. Ava is pretty sure she was saying it to get rid of her, to go out and be someone else’s problem, but Ava thinks she found the right people all the same.
“Isn’t that the guy from Twilight?” Camila asks, abandoning her popcorn. Ava meets Bea’s eyes and smiles. Bea shakes her head fondly at Camila and Ava wonders when she’ll get the same look. Someday, she thinks. She looks back at Camila, leaning forward in her seat on the bean bag chair she wrestled through their front door earlier. “He’s the cute one, I think. The other one kind of freaked me out. I don’t think he ever blinked.”
Their front door. Ava’s heart beats a little harder.
Ava could go into detail about Twilight - it was basically contraband at the orphanage. But they’re in the middle of a movie. And she thinks Lilith might actually throw a soda at her. She doesn’t think Bea would appreciate the mess. So that’s a Camila-and-Ava conversation for later.
“Yikes. Ice baths.” Shannon shudders. “I used to do those in high school, during the season. Need a wake up call? Submerge yourself in a metal tub of ice cubes.” She points her entire soda towards the screen. “Though, I never looked like that doing it.”
Mary snakes her arm across the back of Shannon’s shoulder. “No, you didn’t.”
Ava slaps her hand over her mouth to keep in her laugh but Shannon rolls her eyes and elbows Mary gently. “You’re right. I looked better.”
“Damn right you did.” Mary meets Ava’s eye and smirks. It feels like a secret between them. That swelling feeling in her chest reaches a crescendo.
She shoves another handful of popcorn into her mouth and spares a glance at Bea, finding that Bea is already looking back at her. She inhales, nearly choking on a kernel. Bea sits forward, worry on her face, but Ava holds up a hand, stopping her. She swallows a few times, washes down what she can with her soda, and takes a deep breath.
“Do you like it?” Ava whispers, aware that she can be too loud sometimes.
Bea has to lean closer to hear her. “It’s entertaining.”
Ava’s eyes narrow. She doesn’t know what that word means to Bea yet. Sometimes entertaining means not good, and sometimes it means the best thing I’ve watched in my whole life. She’s still learning to read her.
“Good,” Bea fills in. Ava exhales in relief. “Gymnastics takes a considerable amount of skill.”
“You could do it,” Ava says confidently. She nods when Bea goes to argue with her. “I saw you rock climbing. And all the martial arts you talk about? I bet you could beat Nastia Liukin.”
Bea’s cheeks might redden but Ava can’t tell in the dim light. “Actual Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin? I doubt that.”
Ava shrugs. “Guess we’ll have to call her and find out. But my money's on you.”
Lilith shushes them, glaring. Ava puts one hand up in surrender and grins at Bea when Lilith turns back to the movie. She pushes the popcorn back to Bea and waits expectantly. Bea is much more graceful than Ava, picking out a few pieces delicately. Ava doesn’t offer the same grace; she shoves her hand in and grabs as much as she can.
“Wait, her mom cheated on her dad with her coach?” Lilith doesn’t pull her eyes away from the screen, but scoffs. “Pathetic.”
Camila claps when it ends, grinning. Ava matches her smile, looking around excitedly.
She pats herself on the shoulder mentally, though her hand itches to do it physically. She made a good choice, a strong start. She stands up, twists her back side to side so she can stretch it out, and grins. “Who wants more popcorn?”
~
She waits until a quiet moment, after everyone has been settled into movie and Bea has finished what Ava is sure to be the first of many comments on the historical validity of The Mummy before she says:
“This movie was my bisexual awakening.”
There’s a cough and sputter from her left where Beatrice is sitting. She thinks about reaching out and giving her a friendly whack on the back, to clear out whatever has gotten stuck in her windpipe, but Mary laughs so loudly, Ava just ends up grinning instead.
Lilith eyes her critically. “Brendan Fraser isn’t the worst you could do, I suppose.”
It’s a glowing compliment coming from Lilith. Ava files it away for the next time she inevitably says something that isn’t.
Camila leans her head back, staring at Ava upside down. “Rachel Weisz is my ‘if I had to pick a girl’.”
“Fraser is not the guy I’d pick,” Mary says firmly. “I’m more of an Usher kind of girl.”
Shannon shrugs. “I think I’d take Mummy-Fraser over Tarzan-Fraser. The long hair is… Eh.”
The TV flickers, brightening the room as Rick O’Connell crosses the screen with a torch in his hand. Ava turns expectantly to Bea. “What about you?”
“What about-” Bea’s voice is slightly squeaky, if Ava had to put a word to it. Almost as if she doesn’t know where to break the syllables. “This movie was not my bisexual awakening,” she finally says.
“Well, of course not.” Ava reaches over and does touch Bea this time, patting her knee gently. “I assume you’d be too focused on the truth of all this history stuff to even focus on either of them.” She smiles warmly. “Am I right?”
Everyone seems to be looking at the two of them. Ava feels the room tip a little. She’s suddenly worried she said the wrong thing. She just thought, with Mary and Shannon clearly dating, that it’d be okay to say something like that. They seem to be open enough, not shying away from each other. But maybe she shouldn’t have. Or maybe it’s the movie choice. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Antonio Banderas also had something good going on.
Bea stares and Ava starts to count the seconds as they stretch.
“I’m not—” Bea begins haltingly, then stops.
A tendril of panic curls around Ava’s chest. She just assumed. Sure, Bea never explicitly said she liked girls, but Ava isn’t usually wrong about this kind of stuff. Maybe she did get it wrong. Or maybe she just said it too loud. She has a tendency to barrel head first into things without thinking.
Bea clears her throat. “I suppose…” Her eyes dart over Ava’s shoulder to where Mary and Shannon are. Ava looks, smiling a little, still confused. “I suppose… Rachel Weisz is someone a person might find appealing.”
“Attractive,” Ava corrects, slightly relieved that she didn’t read Bea incorrectly. “And good choice.” She nods in total agreement. Bea’s taste is up there.
She shoves her hand into the candy bowl that’s replaced the popcorn. M&Ms in this bowl, but Bea has Junior Mints. She looks up, mouth full, and finds Bea still staring back at her. An M&M falls out of her mouth and lands in her hand. She feels her face flush and she quickly tosses it back in.
Lilith’s face is twisted in disgust. There goes that good favor. But Mary and Shannon are looking at her too, and Ava gets a weird feeling in the pit of her stomach.
“I’m sorry,” she says slowly. “I think I said something wrong.” Even though she has no clue what that might be. Her worry that she’s made Bea uncomfortable by talking about her sexuality rises again in her head.
There’s quiet for a moment before Bea says, “No.” She reaches forward like she’s trying to get Ava to understand something but her hand hovers over Ava’s, the one with a small chocolate smudge on it, and she pulls it back into her own lap. “You don’t mind?”
“Mind…” Ava blinks, looks back again. Mary is staring at her and there’s a slight edge she hasn’t seen before. “That you like Rachel Weisz?” No one says yes or no and she’s still so confused. “I totally don’t mind, if that’s what you think. Like I said.” She points both of her thumbs back at herself and tries to smile in a way she knows is charming. “Awakening.”
Bea’s face is pinched, though. Ava has the strongest urge to press her hands to it and smooth it out. Mary clears her throat and Bea’s face does it all on its own.
“I mean, I’d still be okay with it if you liked Patricia Velasquez better,” Ava admits. “The gold costume was…” She whistles low and reaches out a hand, nudging Bea in the shoulder. Bea sways away and back in again stiffly, but she seems to be breathing out.
Ava exhales. She looks back over her shoulder and Mary is still looking at her but she’s smiling too, nodding once at her. Whatever test that was, she knows she passed it. And honestly, Bea can’t go wrong with either choice. And if she is into someone like Patricia Velasquez, Ava knows a girl in her Humanities class who can pull off that same kind of eyeliner.
She offers Bea the bowl of M&Ms silently, gesturing for the Junior Mints. Bea hands it over slowly, her eyes still searching Ava’s face. She hopes Bea finds whatever she’s looking for. Because she wants to show Bea that she’s someone to trust, that Bea made a good decision, and that moving in was something that was going to be great.
She smiles encouragingly and Bea smiles back, ducking her head slightly. Ava turns back to the TV screen, silently passing Camila the bowl of Junior Mints in return for the Skittles.
“Actually,” Bea says quietly, almost as if she’s only talking to Ava. “Did you know that Medjay, the Pharoh’s bodyguards in the movie, actually refers to people from the land of Medja. It was believed to be located in Nubia, near the Second Nile Cataract.”
Ava abandons the screen, turning to Bea now. “How do you know this stuff?”
Bea shrugs a shoulder. “I like knowing things.”
“We’re finding a trivia night and going out,” Ava decides. Lilith shushes her and she ignores it. “The brains between you, Shannon, and Camila, plus my good looks, Mary’s brawn, and the whole… scary thing Lilith has going on, we’ll clean up.”
Bea smiles fully this time. A pillow hits Ava in the side of the head but it doesn’t stop her from smiling back at Bea before snatching the pillow off the floor and holding onto it until Lilith wrestles it out of her hands ten minutes later.
~
They’ve moved onto pizza by the time Atlantis queues up on the TV. Six different boxes sit open on the breakfast bar, greasy plates on the floor and coffee table. Ava rests a hand on her stomach, her whole body stretched out and her socked feet dangerously close to a mushroom sliding around in a puddle of grease. She peers down. Bea’s plate is full of mushrooms, picked out from the other toppings.
Huh. No mushrooms. Maybe Bea does have a flaw.
“I dated a guy who looked like Milo once,” Camila offers. “Soft spoken, too.” She squints, looking into the middle distance. “I think his name was Ted.”
“Ted.” Mary wrinkles her nose. “There was a Ted in my Women’s Safety class freshman year. Thought it was an easy A and he’d get to feel up a few girls.” She scoffs. “He sure felt my fist in his stomach.”
Ava lifts an arm in solidarity, her whole body weighed down with hot dough and spicy tomato sauce. “I beat up someone once. When I was 6. He broke my ant farm.” She gets a sudden burst of energy as damp anger flows through her. She sits up. “I was the one who got in trouble though, the little jerk.”
Lilith pushes a piece of half-eaten veggie pizza towards Ava. Ava’s stomach protests, but the mushrooms are just that good, so she takes it and polishes off the rest of it. Lilith is warming up to her and Ava revels in it. It’s all part of her master plan to win Lilith over, one small step at a time.
With the understanding, of course, that she’s going to go backwards more than she goes forward. But she can tell how much Lilith means to Beatrice and she can play the long game. It’ll be a good exercise in patience.
“What about you, Beatrice? Beat a lot of people up? I know you can, like, kill a man with your bare hands.”
Lilith snorts. “Beatrice would never.”
Ava grins. “So you would?”
“No,” Bea says loudly over Lilith opening her mouth. “Our training is for self-defense. I have never found any reason to escalate a fight outside of tournaments and educational exercises.” She sees Ava’s eyes tracking the table and nudges the plate of mushroom slices towards her. She thinks she sees Bea’s nose wrinkled in disgust.
“Okay, but, if someone like Helga Sinclair - a total babe, by the way - came charging at you, you wouldn’t fight her?” Ava points at the screen where Helga is lifting boxes up, just to show off her muscles. Her mind gets stuck for a minute. They’re impressive arms. But then, Bea’s arms kind of look the same, now that she thinks about it. Helga has more of a Lilith-attitude, though.
Bea blinks. “She’s a cartoon character.”
“But if she was real,” Ava stresses. “Are you just too proud to tell me you’d wipe the floor with her pretty, 2-dimensional face?” She looks at Shannon. “Is she always this modest?”
Shannon snorts softly. “Yeah, Beatrice never really sells herself well.”
“We’re going to fix that,” Ava decides. Bea opens her mouth but Ava shakes her head. “It’s decided. Operation Beatrice is a Badass henceforth commences tonight, on this Saturday, in Apartment 3B. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Order.”
Bea’s mouth opens and closes a few times. “That’s not at all how that goes.”
“What a ridiculous thing to say,” Lilith mutters.
“It was kind of sweet,” Camila says kindly. “I think Beatrice needs a personal cheerleader.”
“Seems like Ava is up for the job,” Mary says. Her eyes are on Beatrice, a small smirk on her face. “I say go for it.”
Ava beams. “That’s four votes yes.”
Shannon hums. “I didn’t vote.”
“My vote counts twice,” Ava says without even looking at her. She goes to say something else, but Atlantis comes into view and she forgets what she was going to say, staring in wonder as Milo sees the lost city for the first time.
She watched this movie a lot when she was in the orphanage. Sister Frances was fond of donations and didn’t usually splurge on new things; a handful of DVDs, including Atlantis, were the last thing that showed up that wasn’t already in pieces by the time it got to them. Osmosis Jones was the other one, but one of the older boys broke it when he thought Osmosis Jones was living inside his body.
Atlantis always caught her attention, though. The idea that there was a secret world out there where anything was possible? It was all she dreamed about as a kid, confined to a bed and locked away under Sister Frances’ crow-like eyes. She imagined she was Milo, on the hunt for the one thing that would make her life make sense. Sure, she never found her Atlantis, but Milo did. And she could live through that.
Her eyes stray to Bea. She’s caught herself doing that all night - constantly tuned into Bea, wondering what she’s thinking or if she likes Ava’s choices or if she’s regretting agreeing to this new living situation. She thinks everyone is warming up to her and it makes her grin. Friends. Friends she can hang out with and do movie nights and trivia nights and lunch dates like the one she has scheduled with Camila on Monday between her morning and afternoon classes.
And all thanks to the person who is quickly becoming her favorite person. Bea is her Princess Kira, showing her a whole new world. She frowns. Wrong movie. But then she shrugs; the point still stands.
“Well, you eat enough for two people,” Mary says, pulling Ava’s attention back in. She sounds impressed, though. “I’ve never seen anyone put away what you have in the last few hours.”
Ava grins and pats her stomach. “There’s still room in this ol’ thing. Just you wait.”
Mary shakes her head, a smile on her face. “Okay, baby girl. Whatever you say.”
A rush of affection swells in her chest. No one has ever called her ‘baby girl’ before. Or said it with a smile like Mary’s, like it’s some secret between the two of them. She holds onto it. She wants to wear it again. She wonders what Bea will call her, what her nickname will be.
“None of you seem to understand what a movie night is, do you?” Lilith cuts in. She has her arms crossed over her chest, eyes narrowed. “It means watching a movie, not talking through it.”
“I didn’t realize you liked this movie so much,” Mary says lightly. “If we knew it was your favorite-”
“Not my favorite,” Lilith sniffs.
“-we would have quieted down,” she finishes. “You heard her, ladies, no talking through Lilith’s favorite movie.”
Mary, unlike Ava, catches the pillow Lilith throws and chucks it right back, hitting her right in the face. Ava gasps but the sound is swallowed up by the growl of disbelief from Lilith, the weary groan from Beatrice, Shannon tutting, and Camila clapping her hands together lightly.
It takes considerable effort, and they have to rewind twice, missing the mark both times and just giving up, but now Ava can put an X across the “bloodshed” square on her “how to be friends with girls” bingo card.
Lilith pouts for the next twenty minutes, Mary gloats, and Ava eats two more pieces of pizza, chewing happily.
~
“You’ll like this one,” Ava promises Bea as she loads the DVD unseen into the player. “It’s Shakespeare.”
A soccer ball bounces across the screen and the look of confusion on Bea’s face deepens. Ava holds out a hand, anticipating a question.
“Just wait, okay? This is pop culture history.”
Bea looks skeptical. “It really is,” Ava insists. “It takes Shakespeare and modernizes it. Think 10 Things I Hate About You. Think Romeo + Juliet. This is a cinematic marvel.”
“Sit down,” Shannon says without any bite. “We’ve liked the other ones so far.”
“Speak for yourself,” Lilith mutters. She scowls, but closes her mouth when Camila looks at her.
Ava doesn’t let it bother her. She swears she saw Lilith crying at the end of Atlantis. But Shannon’s words give her enough courage to take her seat again and watch Bea’s face, eager to see her reaction. She doesn’t have to wait long.
“I love this movie!”
“Not this one.”
Ava looks between Shannon and Mary. They look at each other.
Shannon blinks first. “You don’t like this movie?”
“I want to strangle her boyfriend every time he’s on screen.” Mary scowls, like she’s imagining his throat under her hand. “And Channing Tatum is just…”
“He’s a baby in this movie.”
“He’s not a good actor in this movie.”
Camila raises her hand weakly. “I like him in Magic Mike.” She balks at everyone’s sudden frown. Ava shakes her head. “My freshman year roommate was, like, obsessed with him. Actually, I think her mom was. And it just sort of… trickled down.”
Ava reaches out and pats her head gently. “I’m so sorry. That sounds terrible.”
Camila shrugs. “We traded off. Horror movies for me-”
“Horibble movies for her,” Mary finishes.
Shannon shrugs. “Well, I like this movie. Though, Olivia and Viola should have ended up together.”
That, Ava can get behind. She nods furiously. “Best chemistry, definitely.” She reaches for her bowl of ice cream - she has a scoop of every flavor they got at the grocery store. She digs into it, lifting her spoon to her mouth before she pauses, speaking first. “Do you think Amanda Bynes really knows how to play soccer?”
“No,” echoes around her.
She shrugs. “Didn’t think so.”
They turn their attention back to the movie, ignoring the comments Lilith makes critiquing Sebastian’s girlfriend and Marcus the creep and the principal - who she says reminds her of her tutor. The one you made cry? Bea asks. Lilith grins with all her teeth.
Ava soaks it in like the sun on a beach. She catalogues the way Bea laughs at the pizza shop scene, the way she repeats the ug-lay as if it’s some foreign word she’s learning for the first time. She wonders if she’ll ever hear Bea say it out loud. Maybe she’ll wear something really loud - a word she picked up from Chanel - and see what the reaction is. She watches the way Mary and Shannon whisper to each other, soft murmurs over Olivia and Viola-Sebasatian arguing about cutting open a frog. Even Lilith makes a noise that sounds like a short laugh when Duke shoves a tampon up his nose. Camila mouths the words along with the characters, body jerking a little as if she’s the one playing soccer on the screen.
If 12-year-old Ava could see her now. If 17-year-old Ava could see her now. She wouldn’t believe it. She’d think her whole world extended only as far as the four walls of that orphanage. But it doesn’t. It’s bigger and brighter and filled with the coolest people she’s ever met.
Amanda Bynes flashes the soccer team and Ava laughs and laughs until Bea is smiling and shaking her head - that look, the one Ava saw Bea give Camila, that slight hint of fondness, is aimed directly at her.
The Illyria soccer team wins against Cornwall and Ava feels like she’s won something too.
~
She barely hears the door click shut as Lilith closes it behind her, the last one to leave.
Ava had watched Camila wrestle her bean bag back out into the hallway, smiling too brightly for someone still up at two-thirty in the morning before she slumped back down on the couch, her energy spent. Mary patted the top of her head with a heavy hand, smoothing it out with a smile, and Shannon had squeezed her shoulder gently in a goodbye before they followed Camila. Lilith had stayed, helping to pick up a few things and talking quietly with Bea. Quiet enough that Ava couldn’t hear it - and too tired to tune into.
The popcorn and the candy and the pizza and the ice cream were catching up to her, making her a little nauseous and a lot full. She slumped down further on the couch and watched Lilith move through the apartment like she knew all its corners. She couldn’t wait until she could do the same.
Bea closes the refrigerator now and turns to Ava, smiling. “Did you have fun?”
“Best night ever.” It’s not a lie. This has kicked ‘First Night out with Chanel’ off the top of her list without a care in the world. “Did you?”
“I had a very nice time. We haven’t done that in a long time.” Bea drifts closer. She sits on the edge of the couch, hovering a little above the cushion.
“Monthly movie nights, then.” A thought crosses her mind and she pouts. “Hey, we forgot National Treasure.”
Bea laughs breathlessly. “I think four movies in one night is more than enough, Ava. There will be more nights for movies. We can watch it another time.”
Ava nods decisively. “Monthly movie nights. We have all the time in the world.”
“We do,” Bea says, and it feels a little bit like they’ll have this forever.
Ava reaches behind her, groping at the back of the couch until she finds the corner of the blanket she’s searching for. She pulls it down over her head.
She thinks she hears Bea laugh, soft and melodic. But she could be imagining it, a holdover from her being hyper-aware of each time she did during movie night. She curls into it and smiles into the arm of the couch. She doesn’t know how she started sliding down, but it’s comfortable here.
“Ava,” Beatrice says gently. “You have a bed.”
Ava pulls the blanket off her head and throws it onto her legs. She squirms, trying to get it to settle over her body. “But this is so comfortable. Where did you find this couch?”
“Shannon picked it out. I’ll ask her the next time I talk to her.”
“I’ve always wanted a couch like this,” she admits. “Big, comfy. Just for us.” Her eyes flutter closed and the room goes hazy before her vision goes dark. “I’m going to sleep here.” She wiggles again. The blanket tangles around her waist.
Bea is quiet for a moment. “Come on. I have something for you.”
Her eyes open quickly, rolling off the couch and onto her feet. “What is it?”
Bea looks nervous but crosses the room to her bedroom, slipping in through the closed door. Ava hears some things moving and then Bea is in the living room again, hands clasped behind her back. She’s holding something.
“It’s- Now that I have it, I’m not sure it-” Bea takes a deep breath and smiles tightly. “I got you something. A sort of housewarming present.”
Ava grins. “I love presents. What is it?”
There’s still an undercurrent of nervousness in the way Bea uncharacteristically shifts. “Hold out your hands. And close your eyes.”
Ava immediately slams her eyes closed and thrusts her hands out. The air feels still but not uncomfortable. Silences with Bea don’t feel weird, which is crazy. So she doesn’t mind the wait as Bea obviously works up the courage to put something in her hands. After a long moment, she feels something soft and nearly weightless drop into her cupped palms.
Bea clears her throat. “You can open your eyes.”
Ava does. She blinks. A long, thin, soft stuffed animal with a white belly and tiger stripes stares back at her. She’s confused for a moment before the pieces slot into her place in her mind. “Is this… Is this Hobbes? From Calvin and Hobbes?
Bea’s cheeks are just the slightest hint of pink. She clears her throat again. “I’m sorry if this is overstepping.”
“It’s really not,” Ava rushes out. Her heart is too big in her chest. Her eyes start to burn a little, hot beads forming in the corners. “How did you-”
“The internet is more than just Wikipedia and Reddit.” Bea’s hands are tucked back behind her again. “But after our conversation…”
Their conversation.
The one where Ava told Bea everything: her accident and the grueling years of work, the orphanage, years spent in the libraries reading everything she could get her hands on. She told her about the Peanuts comics she liked and how one of the older kids had called her Linus because she carried around a blue blanket for a few years. She told Bea about the hours she would spend reading the Calvin and Hobbes comic collections and pretending she could join them on their adventures: riding in a wagon, bubble bath statues, exploring the forest, sledding, waiting for the school bus.
She told Bea she always wanted a Hobbes stuffed animal to take with her on her own adventures, just as soon as she could go and have them. She’d never admitted that to anyone else, not even Diego, the little boy she shared a room with. But something about Bea made it easy to talk about these kinds of things, Maybe it was the way she listened. She didn’t judge, she didn’t laugh.
Ava knows that’s going to be a problem. She’s going to end up telling Bea everything all the time.
And when Bea is ready to talk more about herself, about what her parents were like and how they were never around, Ava is going to be ready to listen.
“You didn’t have to do that,” she says quietly.
Bea’s voice is just as quiet. “I wanted to. You deserve to go on adventures.”
She breathes in slowly. “Today was an adventure. The best kind. And I know there’s going to be a million more.” She hugs Hobbes to her chest. “Because now I have someone. Two someones.” She smiles softly at Bea. “Hobbes. And you.”
Bea’s cheeks pinken just a hint more. She opens her mouth like she’s going to say something, but closes it again. Ava doesn’t want to say anything either, afraid to break this precarious moment. So she just looks at Hobbes, her Hobbes, and feels her chest swell with affection for this new friend she’s found.
‘Thank you,” she whispers. Bea doesn’t whisper back, but Ava doesn't think she needs to. She places Hobbes carefully on the couch. She strokes down his soft belly, fingers lingering before she turns to Bea. “I’m going to hug you. Brace yourself.”
She sees Bea physically prepare for it, watches the muscles under her thin cotton shirt tense. And she laughs, inwardly, that Bea seems to ready herself, as if Ava is going to knock her down. But she doesn’t blame her. Ava crashes into her, arms tight around her middle, trapping Bea’s arms against her sides. She feels Bea struggle for a moment before she frees her arms. Hands hover above her back before Bea pats her gently. Ava grins into the soft skin of Bea's arm.
“I think we’re going to be best friends,” she says quietly in the space between them.
She doesn’t break away from the hug until her arms start to ache. Then she steps back, giving Bea a hesitant smile before she ducks around her, headed to her new bedroom with Hobbies in her hands. With a soft goodnight, she lets Bea have a moment to herself. She seems like the type of person who needs to recover from a hug, but Ava will take care of that.
She’s a very good hugger. And they have time.

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
summer had gone by in a blink of an eye, and before you knew it, it was fall. the start of junior year, the second to last year of your college education. the year where almost everyone starts to realize ‘oh, this shit is real’ and really whip themselves into shape.
you had gotten back to your off campus house before your two other roommates. you had met the two other girls you now call best friends during your freshman year. there was sarah, who was your roommate your first year, and mia, who was your neighbor in the dorms.
you enjoyed being the first one to the house. you could move in your stuff peacefully without having the other girl’s stuff in the way. plus, you could play music as loud as you wanted to. that is, with the exception of the open window and the other students looking up towards your room whenever they walked by.
and of course, just like it was last year, once the others girls arrived: chaos ensued.
“oh my god, the hockey team is throwing a party tonight,” mia practically yelled from the kitchen, “we have to go!”
mia was the wild child, the party animal out of the three of you. sarah was a lot more like you, someone who would rather stay at home and watch a good movie than go out to a party. however, over the past couple semesters, mia has gotten you more out of your shell.
which she may or may not take a little for granted on some occasions.
you shook your head, “hell no.”
“why not?” she frowned. you rolled your eyes.
“because if the hockey team is throwing a party then you know, about 99.9% of the time, taylor and her posse are gonna be there.”
taylor harrison, the president of the sorority and the literal definition of daddy’s money. she's the type of girl who gets what she wants when she wants it, and if she doesn't then all hell brakes loose.
it didn't help that she was the girl every guy had their eye on. the girl, that for some reason, every girl wanted to be approved by her and be her friend. you couldn't understand why someone would want to get sucked into her toxic, little circle.
“besides,” you shrugged, “jack and i have plans.”
the two other girls sent you playful looks, “plans?”
“oh, shut up.”
jack had been your boyfriend since the beginning of last year. the two of you were in the same class, he sat next to you and the rest is history. it was cliche and something that happens to everyone, but you could tell that it was different with him.
“well then,” mia sighed, looking over at sarah, “i guess you’re forced into going to the party this time.”
sarah groaned, “seriously? there’s a new episode of drag race i need to watch.”
mia gave her a look, “i’ll buy you coffee for a week.”
sarah rolled her eyes before looking back over at you, watching as you slowly backed away from the conversation, “you owe me.”
you laughed, hand on the knob to the front door, “sorry! gotta go!”
you quickly left the house before you were convinced to skip out on jack and go to the party too. you made your way towards the campus apartment buildings, giving small smiles to a couple of the familiar faces that passed you. you had made your way through the group of people in the quad, going inside the building and heading for the stairs.
you reached his apartment door and knocked, but there was no answer. you waited a couple seconds as you heard shuffling from the other side of the door.
you knocked again, “jack?”
with no answer yet again, you reached for the door knob and turned it slowly, but you wish you hadn’t. you watched as a red headed girl held her shirt up, covering her chest and as jack froze in place in front of the door, shirtless with hickeys littering his collarbone.
you didn't know what to say, or how to react as the girl turned around and put her shirt on.
“y/n, baby, this isn’t what it looks like-“
you cut him off with a hard slap across his face. the red headed girl gasped quietly. you sent her a look.
“don’t you have somewhere to be?”
she gathered her things quickly before talking to jack before she pushed past you, “i’ll call you?”
he didn’t answer her, just stood there looking at you. you watched her leave as she quickly made her way towards the staircase at the end of the hall, disappearing behind other people.
“how could you?” you asked, your voice breaking as tears threatened to spill over your eyes.
“i’m sorry-“
“don't,” you mumbled, “we’re done.”
he watched as you turned away from him, walking towards the stairs. you ignored his calls to come back as tears spilled out of your eyes and onto the tile of the hallway.
you took out your phone, sending a text to the groupchat with mia and sarah.
y/n change of plans, not going to jacks. you guys at the party yet?
sarah unfortunately what happened with jack?
y/n ill explain when i get there
mia YAY Y/NS COMING TO THE PARTY!!!
you locked your phone, shoving it into the back pocket of your jeans as you made your way towards the house party. most of the guys on the hockey team had done the same thing as you and your friends, they had decided to share a house off campus. it was the hotspot for all the parties and they were known to throw the best of them.
you walked up the path, people sitting outside with drinks in their hands as music boomed from inside the house. you made your way through the door, looking for sarah and mia, but they were nowhere to be found.
you sighed, making your way to the kitchen instead. you went through the different alcohols and mixed up some kind of concoction into your cup, gulping it down before reaching for another alcohol. you poured a heavy amount, someone walking into the kitchen and coming up next to you, grabbing a can of soda.
“damn, rough day?”
you instantly knew that accent. tom holland. the captain of the hockey team, the hottest guy on campus.
and taylor harrington’s boyfriend. or ex boyfriend. it really depended on how she felt that day.
“you could say that.”
he watched as you mixed the vodka with a can of soda. you didn’t tense at his gaze, didn’t immediately want to keep his interest. but something about you made his eyes linger a little longer than he would’ve done with anyone else.
“you alright?” he asked, still watching as you sipped the drink from your cup. you made eye contact this time, nodding as you swallowed.
“not really, but it’s not like you necessarily care, right?”
you didn’t mean to sound like an ass, but you really didn’t want to deal with taylor’s bitching if she saw you talking to tom. you were pretty sure that if she were to say something to you right now, you’d rip the overpriced extensions out of her bleach blonde head.
“i mean if you’re upset about something, i think it’s best if you talk about it. especially ‘cause it looks like you’ve been crying.”
why's he so nice?
“and what? talk to you about my problems? no thanks.”
he shrugged, leaning against the counter, “can’t say i didn’t try.”
you took another sip before looking back at him. you didn’t mean for your eyes to linger around his jawline, but god he was hot. any girl, or guy, would say the same thing. he was easy on the eyes, extremely good at his sport and he got near perfect grades. he literally checked all the boxes.
that’s when you noticed something was missing, “where’s your barbie girlfriend and her minions?”
he laughed, “not a clue, could care less to be honest with you.”
you raised an eyebrow, “what? did she break up with you for the 30th time today because you didn’t get her a chanel bag?”
he smiled, “nah, i broke up with her. caught her sleeping with this other guy.”
your eyes widened, mentally cursing yourself for being such a dick, “oh, uhm- i’m sorry.”
“no, it’s okay-“
“it’s not, because i know what it feels like,” you said, your eyes meeting his brown ones, “it sucks.”
“how long ago, if you don’t mind me asking?”
you looked down at your phone, glancing at the time, “about forty-five minutes ago.”
his eyes widened softly, “shit, i’m sorry.”
you shrugged, “what can you do, right?”
he nodded, “suppose you’re right.”
it was quiet for a couple seconds before he spoke up again, “is there a part of you that kinda wants them to be jealous? like see you with someone else and be like ‘damn, i shouldn’t have fucked that up’? or is it just me?”
you thought about it for a second. thought about the look on jack’s face if he were to see you with someone else, if he would even react. you thought about rubbing it into his face that you found someone better, someone who would never betray your trust.
“yeah,” you nodded, “now that you mention it.”
your conversion was interrupted when mia and sarah made their way into the kitchen, “y/n! there you are!”
you smiled at sarah, clearly seeing a very drunk mia.
“hey,” sarah said, “so what happened with jack?”
“it’s a long story, i’ll explain later,” you said, grabbing the bottle of tequila out of mia’s hands, “let’s put that down, yeah?”
“but ‘m not even drunk!” you were surprised you were able to make out the sentence from how slurred her words were.
you chuckled, “trust me, you are,” you looked over at sarah, “we should head back to the house.”
she nodded back at you, agreeing. tom spoke up once again, “hey, i could give you guys a ride back to your house.”
you waved him off, smiling politely, “no, it’s okay. it’s not that far of a walk.”
“no, no, i insist,” he said, fishing his keys out of his pocket, “just tell me how to get there.”
you looked at him, “you’re sober?”
“yeah,” he said, “i don’t really drink.”
you nodded to him, knowing he wouldn’t take no for an answer. you let sarah and mia walk in front of you, tom on your left. he walked up to a group of guys that you assumed to be his house and teammates.
“hey, i’ll be back in a little.”
“sounds good, man.”
he nodded towards the door, placing his hand on the small of your back to lead you through the crowd. as you pushed through with tom following behind, you noticed the looks that got thrown your way.
of course everyone’s eyes were on you, you were walking with tom holland, who had his hand on your back. of course it looked a little bit conspicuous to anyone who was watching.
once you were outside, he unlocked the audi that was sitting in the driveway, mia and sarah filing into the backseat as you climbed into the passenger side.
“so, where to, ladies?”
“we’re on lincoln, in one of the off campus houses.” sarah said, letting mia lean her head on her shoulder.
he nodded, putting the car in reverse. the music softly playing from the speakers as you found yourself staring out the window, losing yourself in thought as tom made small conversation with sarah in the back.
“hey,” his voice directed towards you as it pulled you out of your train of thought, “you alright?”
you looked over at him, sending him a tight lipped smile and a nod, “yeah.”
“you sure?” he looked back over at you before looking at the road in front of him, “you’re not a very good liar.”
you sighed, “just thinking about what you mentioned earlier, you know the whole ‘making my shitty ex jealous’ thing.”
he nodded, “yeah, it’s just the coming up with something that would bother them that’s the hard part.”
you nodded in agreement, looking back out the window. you started thinking of ways that you could make it look like you were doing so much better than jack, something that would instantly make him regret cheating on you.
that’s when it hit you.
“a fake relationship!” you said, tom’s attention turning back to you.
his eyebrows were furrowed, “what?”
“you know, get into a fake relationship with someone. you go out and pretend that the two of you are dating, the other person would obviously know it’s fake, and the both of you could benefit from the ‘relationship’. the best thing about it is that no one else would know you're not together, only the two of you.”
he nodded, “doesn’t sound like a bad idea.”
“of course it doesn’t, because i came up with it,” you smirked, “and i’m the mastermind.”
he let out a chuckle as you pointed to your house, telling him he could just pull up in front of it. he did as you had asked, pulling in front of the house and unlocking the doors so the three of you could get out.
“thanks for the ride, tom!” sarah smiled, helping mia out of the car as she led her towards the house.
“anytime.”
you watched your roommates from where you were standing by the open car door. once you saw they were inside, you looked back at him.
“thanks for letting me vent,” you smiled, “and for the ride, too,” you tucked a piece of hair behind your hair as the wind softly blew it in front of your face, "you know, she really ruined your reputation."
he smiled from the drivers side, “i’ve heard that more than you think.”
you smiled back, “thanks again.”
“always.”
you closed the door to the car softly, making your way to the front door. you had noticed he stayed in the car, making sure you made it to the door okay. you sent him a small wave as you closed the door, locking it and turning off the outside light.
you leaned up against the wooden frame, looking back at your grinning roommates, “what?”
“tom freaking holland just drove us home because of you!” mia said, “how did that even happen?!”
you rolled your eyes, “nothing happened. nothings happening, okay? we’re just in the same situation.”
“oh, yeah,” sarah said as you made your way into the kitchen, “what happened with jack?”
you took a deep breath as you grabbed a water bottle, the two girls anxiously waiting for you to tell them why you were so upset.
“i uh, i went over to his apartment and he was fucking another girl,” you said, both of their mouths dropping open, “and i broke up with him.”
“i’m so sorry,” mia said, “he didn’t deserve you.”
“what a dick!” sarah rolled her eyes, both of the girls walking over and wrapping you in a group hug, “we love you.”
you smiled, “i love you guys.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
“what, so are they broken up or are they dating still?” you asked, watching whatever reality show sarah had put on the living room tv. she shrugged her shoulders.
“not really sure.”
“if i was her, i’d break up with him.” mia said from her side of the couch. sarah nodded her head, pointing at her as a silent way of saying she made a point.
there was a knock on the door, pulling all of you away from the show. you got up from your seat, putting your drink down, “i got it.”
you walked over to the front door, unlocking it as you peeked open the door. you opened it the rest of the way as you smiled at the brunette boy in front of you.
“stalker much?” you joked and he let out a soft laugh.
“hello to you, too,” he joked back at you, “do you have a minute? i uh... have to talk to you about something.”
you nodded, letting him inside the house. sarah and mia watched from the living room, eyebrows raised as you shut the door.
“hey, tom!”
he smiled back at the girls in the living room, sending them a small wave as they sent you a look. you waved your hand in front of your neck, telling them to cut it out.
“we’re going upstairs.” you grabbed tom’s arm, pulling him away from the looks your friends were sending. he followed you up the wooden steps and into your room. he looked around at your room as you closed the door.
you sat cris-cross on the bed, waving towards the desk chair and the bed, “you can sit wherever.”
he nodded, opting for the desk chair, “thanks.”
you sent him a soft smile, “so, what’s up?”
“so, i’ve been thinking about what you said in the car last night, the whole ‘fake dating’ thing,” he started, taking a pause to make sure you understood what he was talking about. when you nodded, he continued, “what if we 'fake-dated' each other? i mean, i know it’s kind of crazy beings we barely know each other, but you said it’s better to choose someone who knows it’s fake and someone who could also benefit from it. plus, you said you wanted to make your ex jealous too. you check all of the boxes.”
you raised an eyebrow, “i… i uh-“
“i know, i'm sorry to just kind of throw it all onto you at once, but i’ve been thinking about it since last night. i mean, you are the mastermind, right?” he smirked and you rolled your eyes playfully.
at the end of the day, how bad could it be?
“what if i say no?”
he was silent for a second, “i didn’t really think you’d be opposed.”
you let out a sigh, why am i doing this?
“okay, fine, you have a deal,” you extended your hand out for him to shake, when he reached for it, you pulled your hand back. he shot you a confused look.
“however, we’re doing it by my rules.”
he shook your hand, “deal.”
you pointed to the notepad and the pen on your desk, “can you hand me that, please?”
he nodded, grabbing the paper and pen off the desk. you turned to a blank page, writing at the top of the page.
fake dating rules:
“okay, number one,” you said, tapping the pen against the notebook as you thought about the first rule. when it came to your mind, you immediately started writing it down, “no strings attached. this is simply just to get back at our shitty exes.”
he nodded, “oh, you have to come to my games and the hockey team parties. gotta make it look like you’re an actual supportive girlfriend.”
"the games i'm alright with, but the parties?" you scrunched your face up. he gave you a look, but softened when he came to an agreement.
"okay, not all of them, but most of them."
you rolled your eyes, "fine."
you wrote down what he said as rule number two, “anything else?”
“one ‘date’ per week. we get to know more about each other so it doesn’t seem suspicious to anyone we talk to about our ‘relationship’.”
you wrote it down, adding the last rule in all capital letters and underlined it, “no one knows it’s a fake relationship. absolutely no one.”
he nodded in agreement, watching as you made makeshift signature lines. you passed him the notebook as he let out a soft laugh, taking the pen from your grip. he signed on his line, your signature going next to his.
“so it’s settled, girlfriend.” you smiled, “it’s settled, boyfriend.”

I loved your “we gotta go” imagine when the reader pranked Tom. I was wondering if you could do the “starting an argument then flashing my boyfriend prank”. Thank you love your work xxx
Flashing || Tom Holland
Summary: You do the ‘Starting an argument, then flashing my boyfriend’ prank on your lovely and stressed boyfriend, Tom.
I haven’t proof read this, so sorry if there’s mistakes.
You and your boyfriend always had an on going prank war. Even before you started dating, you both pranked each other here and there, making sure t record one another’s reactions. You both started off as being roommates, just you and him. At first you just walked passed each other, not wanting to get to know one another, not even trying to make a small conversation, with a ‘hi’ or ‘how are you?’.
But one day you both just clicked. Then you wouldn’t ever leave each others sides. Where ever Tom was, you was. Well except for when he went off filming, sometimes you went with him, however other times you had to work as well. At first you and Tom were blind, you both denied your love for each other. Until one rainy day, when you missed his company, missed annoying him every morning, you told him.
And that’s what brings you here today. 2 years you have been dating, and you have known him for 5 years. Living with Tom has its perks, you were always with him when he was in Kingston and you always had his dog Tessa.
“Hey guys, I hope your all doing well. I don’t know why, but everyone has been asking for me to do videos of me starting an argument with Tommy then doing something random. A few weeks ago Tom had done a prank on me, however that back fired.” You chuckle, holding the camera in your right hand, looking through the lens. It’s true sometimes the pranks could go so wrong, but then they could go right.
Last time Tom pranked you and it back fired on him, it was really funny. “Today I’m going to be starting an argument with Tom and then flashing him. He’s currently on a meeting call, and today i’ve been acting moody. So he was like “why you being moody today?”
“I have to make sure that i’m not in the frame and that you can see his clear reaction to me flashing him. I don’t know what to argue about, i’ll have to think of something.” You pause the camera, walking into the kitchen to set it up on the counter. You hid it by a plant pot, hoping your super hot boyfriend won’t see it.
You threw some more dirty dishes into the sink, it being the only thing you could think of to make a stupid argument. The camera is rolling now, you place a finger on your lips, signing that Tom was coming.
“Tom are you gonna help me?—You said you do the dishes and you didn’t do them.” You call out, rattling the dishes as you hear his tired foot steps.
“Oh my goshhh! Im so stressed. Can I get a hug? I need love..” He tiredly smiles, Tom loved physical touch when he was stressed, you always calmed him.
Tom walked over to you, extending his arms out for you to fall into. You move away from him turning off the tap, his arms falling with a frown on his face. “No can you just do the dishes”
“Can I get no love?” He chuckles, thinking your messing around. You sigh, giving him a quick hug, patting his back like he was a friend. “There’s your hug, now do the dishes.”
Tom kissed your bare shoulder, “I’ve been in meetings all day, i’ve missed you” holding onto you still as you pull away.
“Okay now do the dishes” Now this makes Tom confused, his eyebrows raising up as he looks into the sink. “There’s three dishes, babe” He tells you placing a hand on your waist, all he wanted to do is get love from his beautiful girlfriend.
“Okay but why do I always have to do your dishes?!” You snap a little, trying to sound annoyed.
“I told you i’m stressed out, and this is how you’re gonna treat me?” He still spoke in a soft tone, gesturing to the dirty dishes in the sink. “I’ll do them”
“Okay then do them”
“I’ve been on a meeting since 7 a.m. How’s I supposed to do them?” Tom chuckles, running his hands through his loose curls. “Well you could’ve woke up earlier to do-“
“Earlier baby girl-“ He laughs, looking at you.
“I’m just frustrated, because last night you literally said don’t worry about them i’ll get them. You lied, you said you would do them” That part was true, you didn’t mind though.
“Most of these are from breakfast, and when would I have time to clean them” He quickly bends down to stroke Tessa’s head, finding her as a way to calm him down.
“No that one is from last night, when you literally had cereal.” You pointed at the bowl, fixing your straps of your tank top.
Tom puts his hands on your shoulders, helping you fix them. Ahh you were so lucky, it’s all the small things he does. “I’ll clean them, baby..” He gently shakes your body, hoping that you will at least be less moody if he jokes around to make you laugh.
“Okay! Don’t touch me” You pull his arms off, looking into his chocolate brown eyes.
“Are you serious?”
“No, i’m just irritated.”
Then he moves to where another dirty pan was left on the stove, picking it up. “Thank you for cooking for me. I said thanks like four times, I said i’ll clean the dishes.” Tom puts the pan into the sink turning on the tap, getting ready to clean the dishes even though he’s tired and stressed.
“Okay but why do I always have to ask you?” You try to raise your voice, continuing the argument even though you felt so bad for your sweet and loving boyfriend.
“I didn’t have any other time to do ‘em babe. I’ve been on meetings” He started to clean the pan, squirting the washing up liquid onto the sponge.
He’s still looking at you, “Well if you had time to eat then you had time to do the dishes, Tommy. And you could’ve done some of the ones last night, babe.”
Then he puts everything down, starting to grow even more stressed by how you was treating him over dishes. “I was eating on my meeting, y/n. Are you serious?” He said, pulling a face when you told him again that he could’ve ‘woken up earlier’.
“You’ve seen me on my like….What are you talking about? You literally know I had zero time to do anything” Tom still didn’t raise his voice, not wanting the argument to get worse. Now was the time that you decided that you had to flash him.
Walking away you say, “It’s just the fact that you don’t care, and you leave your stuff everywhere. I spent twenty minutes cleaning up everything” You made sure you was out of the cameras view.
“I left a bowl out last night, i’m sorry, baby. What else can I say, I didn’t mean to.” He sighed turning the tap back on, fully done with the argument you had started.
“You leave everything everywhere, you leave your keys on the counter, you leave your wallet-“
“Why are you acting physco about it? Like I’m sorry that I leave some things in certain places, maybe it’s because im stressed. Like I understand when your stressed, i’m always here for you, i’m never like this” Tom keeps his eyes on the dishes, focusing on cleaning the pan and placing it on the rack when he’s done, moving onto the next dish.
“But like, it not being clean stresses me out to” Your hands slowly go to the bottom of your tank top, him not noticing yet. The camera couldn’t see you either, all they could see was Tom and then him trying to spray you with a laugh.
“Will you smile? Come give me-“ Tom looks back up ready to finish his sentence, the camera seeing his facial expression change. You lifted your tank top all the way up, not having worn a bra so he could see your boobs bare.
Tom smiles cheekily, “What the fuck?” He laughs, dropping the spoon in his hand, it landing back into the sink. “What you doing?” He smirks a laugh, turning of the tap walking over to you as you pull your top back down.
“Nothing” You innocently say, moving back into the cameras view.
“Why you doing that? Baby!” He whines.
“Are you still mad at me?” You try hold in your laugh, a smile falling from your lips.
“I’m not mad at you, you’re mad at me. So that’s how your gonna fix an argument, your just gonna flash me?” He’s still laughing as he cups your cheeks, pressing both your foreheads together.
“You think boobs can fix everything, because they can” You wrap your arms around his neck as he picks you up a little, laughing.
“Yeah?” You smirk.
“Yes”
“Okay” You peck his lips, his hands going to your waist as he looks at your cleavage from your top.
“why you being mean?”
“I’m not being mean” You told him, pulling away.
“You are, i’m gonna do the dishes” He told you.
“So why ain’t you doing them now?”
Then he gave you a ‘are you serious right now?’ look, “Because you just flashed me your tits babe.” He gave your clothed boobs a squeeze, slapping your ass as you went to walk away saying ‘and, and what about it?’
“You want me to do the dishes-“ You flash him again. “Stop, how am I meant to do them when your doing that. Okay, what do you want. I’m confused” He took a step towards you thinking you wanted to do something.
“No, I want you to do the dishes” You laugh from behind the camera.
“Oh my goshhhhh” He drags the word out. “Babe, i’m stressed and I don’t have a lot of time. So it’s either I do the dishes or we do something better”
“I want you to do the dishes quickly, then we can do something better as soon as your done” You tease him, knowing he will grow frustrated after.
Tom grabbed your waist, pushing your body into his. You could already feel his hard on, he was really turned on by you just flashing him? “But there’s a bigger problem now, baby girl” Tom told you with a smirk, placing a sweet kiss to your lips.
“Well do the dishes” You push yourself into him, hearing him grunt as you walk back behind the camera, flashing him again.
“Y/n, that’s not fair. That’s like me showing you my dick, then saying no do the dishes. Baby, come on. First you was mean, now your killing me here” He picked up the dirty spoon again, you finally having enough of the prank. You felt too bad, you wanted to end this and show your boyfriend some love.
You grab his hands, dropping the spoon from it, and pulling him in for a sweet kiss. His hands go around your waist again, swaying you both side to side. “it’s a prank, love. I’m playing with you, I wanted to start an argument then flash you. The cameras there- I’m sorry. You don’t have to do them, i’ll wash them up later” You peck his lips, seeing him feel relieved that it was all a joke.
“So your really not mad at me?” He questioned.
“No, i’m not”
A smirk played on his lips as an idea popped into his head, “So does that mean I can see your tits again………,in the bedroom?”

The rest of the boys were already in the kitchen making their own food and doing dishes when you and Jisung came in.
“Look who’s finally awake!” Felix exclaimed and clapped his twin brother on the back.
“It’s almost noon,” the tall one, Hyunjin, pointed out then smirked. “Long night?”
Jisung gave him a look. “Jet lag, you idiot.”
“Is that what the kids are calling it these days?”
“Give me a break, Jinnie, we’ve barely been here twelve hours.”
He held up his hands in surrender and leaned back against the counter. “Fine, I’ll save the harassment and embarrassing stories for when you hit the twenty-four mark.”
“Thanks for the heads up.”
“You don’t have to wait on the embarrassing stories,” you piped up, “I’m all ears.”
Hyunjin traded looks with Jisung then glanced back to you and cracked a smile. “We can talk later.”
“I’m holding you to that because I have stories of my own to trade with you.”
Jisung looked at you with incredulous eyes. “My own girlfriend.”
“Sorry, babe, but your friends have valuable information and it wouldn’t be fair to offer them nothing in return for it.”
You touched his hand softly only for him to yank it away in mock betrayal as he slid past you over to the fridge.
“Do we have eggs?” he asked as he surveyed the contents inside.
“Minho just used the last two in his scramble,” the other roommate, Changbin, you assumed by process of elimination, said.
“Bro, c’mon,” Jisung sighed and slammed the door shut.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know you’d want them,” Minho apologized.
“It’s okay,” you assured Jisung. “We can have cereal or something.”
“No, I’ll run to the store to get more,” Minho offered.
“I can go with you,” you added, earning a raised eyebrow or two from the rest of the boys. “There’s something I need to pick up.”
“Okay,” he agreed and turned to the rest of the group “Anyone else want to come?” There was silence. “Alright, then it’s just the two of us.”
“Is that okay?” Jisung asked lowly, pulling you to the side.
“Yeah, we don’t need to be together every second,” you reasoned.
“Are you sure? I can go with you guys!”
“No, no, catch up with your friends. We’ll be back in a few.”
“Okay, love you,” he said and kissed you chastely on the lips.
It wasn’t the first time you and Jisung had kissed. You weren’t one to turn down a dare, which your friends knew and used against you, but there weren’t always stakes involved. On drunken nights neither of you cared to remember, in those early hours of the morning that followed parties or nights out… when it was just the two of you in one of your dorms rooms basking in the warm glow of alcohol, when everything still sounded muffled and your voices were shot from shouting for hours…
This felt different though. There wasn’t the same tenderness or hazy intimacy like there had been those other times. This felt forced, like he had something to prove. You hoped it wasn’t noticeable to the others.
You wrapped your arm around Jisung’s neck and turned to Minho. “You ready?”
“Are you, uh, going…. like that?”
You looked down at yourself in confusion, realizing you were still wearing what you had worn to bed. To be more precise, you were still wearing the boxers that everyone probably thought were Jisung’s. Had you not learned your lesson after last night?
“I mean, it’s cool if you are,” Minho continued. “It’s just the grocery store. I wasn’t trying to be- I was just wondering.”
“I forgot I was wearing pajamas,” you admitted. “I’ll go throw something on really quick.”
-
“You wanna drive?” Minho asked as you walked out to the car together, waving the keys in his hand.
“I… think that’s illegal.”
“I was joking.”
“Oh.”
You slid into the passenger seat while Minho started the engine and turned on some music.
“Any requests?”
You shook your head. “I’m good with whatever.”
You watched as Minho scrolled through his phone, picked a playlist, and put it on shuffle. A melody with low drums and heavy guitar started playing through the speakers. You didn’t recognize the song, but you liked it. It sounded like something you’d hear in an alt bar, or a grungy coffee shop.
“Are you all packed for tomorrow?” Minho asked suddenly, turning down the volume.
“Yeah, I never really unpacked so…”
“Right. Sorry.”
“I hope I have everything,” you added, trying not to let the conversation die. “It seems like every country has a different kind of outlet. It’s kind of hard to keep track of which adapters you need.”
“It fucking sucks,” he agreed.
“You travel a lot?”
“You have no idea.”
“Is it for work, or for fun?”
“Depends,” he answered with a shrug, “but mostly for work.”
You didn’t want to pry anymore than you already had or make it seem like you were interviewing him so you changed the subject.
“Was your scramble good?” you asked.
“The one I made this morning?” Minho asked, looking at you as if it were the last thing he expected to hear.
You nodded. “Yeah, was it worth it? Breaking Jisung’s heart like that?”
He burst out laughing at that, making you smile too.
“It was totally worth it. Best egg scramble I’ve ever had.”
“I’m glad.”
Minho was still grinning to himself when he pulled into the parking lot a few blocks later. He picked a spot in the corner and backed into it. Show off. Maybe you couldn’t back into parking spots, but at least you didn’t make turns at forty miles an hour.
“Fuck, did you have to park a mile away?” you groaned as you made the trek up to the grocery store’s entrance, struggling to keep up with him.
“Sorry, force of habit.”
He slowed down to let you catch up and threw the hood of his sweatshirt over his head before shoving his hands in his pockets.
The store wasn’t too crowded, at least by American grocery store standards. It looked like the regular weekend rush. Everyone was using their precious time off to check things off of their to-do list, living the corporate dream.
Minho led you through the bakery to the dairy section in the back.
“How many eggs do you reckon we need?” he asked as he looked at all the different options.
“However many it takes to make an omelet.”
“Do you know how many that is?”
“Nope.”
“Lovely.”
“I don’t usually cook,” you said defensively. “Even my instant ramen is just ‘meh’.”
“It’s a good thing you’re dating Jisung then,” he muttered under his breath. “Otherwise I’m afraid you’d die of starvation.”
“Hey, it doesn’t need to taste good. If anything, I’m resourceful. All I need to survive is tap water and a microwave.”
“Please don’t tell me you’ve been microwaving your instant ramen,” Minho groaned, eyes widening when you didn’t deny it. “Have you been?”
“It’s probably better if I don’t answer that.”
“Jesus.”
“Yeahhh, that’s what your brother said.”
“Should we text him about the eggs? Since we’re obviously both clueless.”
“No, we can figure it out,” you insisted, “I can be domestic.”
Minho raised his eyebrows and stared at the ground. “I don’t know how long you guys have been together, but I’m sure he knows that’s a lie. I literally met you yesterday and even I know that.”
You narrowed your eyes at him. “Okay, maybe I’m not the best cook, but I’m the best roller in our friend group. Better than Jisung.”
“Wait, Jisung smokes?”
God damn it.
“Uh, no.”
“Damn, before college he’d never even tried it.” He grinned proudly. “You’ve really loosened him up, haven’t you?”
You opened your mouth to answer and shut it again. You’d already said too much. “I wouldn’t say that it was all me…” you trailed off and glanced back at the display in front of you. “Anyway, about the eggs-”
“Oh shit, right.”
You’d been standing there for a solid five or six minutes and were no closer to deciding on how many eggs to get.
“We don’t want to get too many because we’re leaving tomorrow… unless Hyunjin and Changbin would want the rest?”
Minho seemed to think about it for a second before grabbing a carton of half a dozen off the shelf.
“They don’t eat a lot of eggs,” he explained, “but better safe than sorry. I don’t even want to know what Jisung would do to me if we came back with less than enough.”
You laughed and brushed him off. “Psh, he talks a lot of shit, but he’s a softie at heart.”
“Maybe to you.” Minho gently placed the eggs in the basket you were carrying and then put his hands in his pockets again. “What did you need to pick up?”
You had forgotten the entire reason you tagged along on the errand until he mentioned it.
“Fuck, thank you for reminding me. I needed to get some pads.”
“Oh, okay. I don’t know where they keep those, but I’d guess they’re on the same aisle as pharmaceuticals and like soap and stuff?”
The tone in his voice had changed a bit. Not in a way that was disgusted or embarrassed, but in a concerned, almost panicked, way. Like he was afraid you were about to bleed out and die in the middle of the aisle but was trying to play it cool. You thought it was endearing if not a little amusing.
“Seems like our best bet,” you agreed.
“Do you want medicine or anything else?” he asked once you’d found the right aisle and picked a pack of pads from a brand you recognized.
“I have some back at the house, but thanks for thinking of that.”
“Yeah, I know it’s really painful for some of my co-st, uh, co-workers and I just didn’t want you to be hurting…” he trailed off awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck, avoiding your gaze.
You smiled softly and followed him up to the check-out where you put the items on the little conveyor belt thing and grabbed a divider to put in between them.
“Hey, put that back,” Minho said and leaned over your shoulder to slide the divider back onto the side.
“You really don’t have to do that,” you protested as the cashier rung up both things.
Minho didn’t even glance back at you before handing the woman his credit card. “Don’t worry about it.”
“I am worried about it.”
“This is saving time instead of having two separate transactions,” he insisted.
“I’ll pay you back in the car then.”
“No you won’t.”
“And why not?”
“Because these are like five pounds, y/n, it’s not a big deal.”
You sighed stubbornly. “Fine. But I’ll get you back. Eventually.”
Minho shook his head and gave you a smug look. “I’m sure you will.”
-
You thought Jisung had been joking when he told you that you could pick one of the places to go for his family trip, and you definitely didn’t think he had been serious when he said you could pick literally anywhere. But that was the rule, apparently. Everyone going on the trip got to pick one of the places that you’d visit, including girlfriends who happened to be tagging along.
It was a good idea in theory, but in reality, it meant scrambling around international airports with no sense of direction. Jisung’s mom had the first pick, which meant the entire Han family plus you were huddled around an airport ticketing counter trying to arrange your travel to Paris.
“Is it going to be an overnight flight?” you asked Jisung.
“Yes, baby. The flight is fourteen hours long.”
“Okay, well, I wasn’t thinking about that.”
He sighed and pressed a kiss to your forehead. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”
You were trying to get used to hearing your best friend saying things like that, but they still sounded foreign coming from him. To be fair, you had only been fake dating for a couple of days now, but you were supposed to be convincing everyone around you that you had been in love for months. You had thought it would be so easy because you already did love Jisung, just not like they thought you did.
Jisung looked down at you when he felt you stiffen underneath his arm. “You okay?”
“Yeah, sorry.”
Seeing as there were only three seats to a row, one of the four of you would have to sit with their parents while the rest of you played Bullshit with the deck of cards Minho had packed in his backpack. Felix made the sacrifice and opted out of sitting with you and his brothers so that he could get some work done free of distraction.
“He’s only saying that,” Jisung said in a whisper loud enough for his twin to overhear. “He just wants to get out of playing with us because he’s a terrible liar and he knows he’d lose.”
“I’m not playing because I’m a gentleman,” Felix clarified. Jisung raised an eyebrow in amusement. “I wouldn’t want to sweep the floor with you in front of your girlfriend.”
“How noble.”
You stashed your backpack next to Jisung’s in the overhead compartment and took your seat next to him. Minho was sat in the window seat, smushed against the wall with his hood up and head down. It seemed like he did that every time he was in public. It was like he tried to become invisible.
Jisung occupied the middle seat in between you and Minho. He talked to his older brother about plans for the trip as he absentmindedly played with your fingers that were intertwined with his.
“Do you guys have any plans for the free day in Paris?” Minho asked. “I assume you’ll be spending it as far away from our family as possible?”
Jisung shook his head. “No, we don’t know what we’re gonna do yet. We haven’t had much time to plan with finals and all.”
“You should take y/n to that bookstore by the Seine- Shakespeare and Company, she likes to read right?”
“Yeah,” Jisung answered for you, unable to hide his surprise. “How did you know that?”
Minho looked over at you and grinned. “I could tell.”
“Fuck’s that supposed to mean?” you accused, leaning past Jisung to glare at his brother.
“Nothing,” he said and held his hands up innocently, “I can just tell you’re well-read, is that such a bad thing?”
“No, there was a negative implication there, you were calling me a nerd, weren’t you?”
Minho glanced over at his brother for help, but Jisung just shrugged. “I mean, there are a lot of really good bars over there too… that you might also like.”
“Nice save.”
“Awful save,” Jisung chimed in. “For what it’s worth, baby, I love that you’re a nerd.”
You yanked your hand out of Jisung’s and grit your teeth. “I see charm runs in the family.”
“Awful save,” Minho mocked.
“I actually don’t need your help right now, Min,” Jisung snapped.
“Oh come on, I’m a great wingman,” he insisted. “Remember when-”
“Let’s not bring up past dating stories in front of my girlfriend, yeah?”
“Wait, but I’m interested now,” you interjected, ignoring the look from your fake boyfriend. “Hyunjin promised me embarrassing stories and he didn’t get to tell me any. Let me at least have this.”
Minho traded a look with his brother before locking eyes with you and smirking. The plane started to move as he started to tell the story, and all three of you pitched forward from the sudden motion. You braced yourself against the seat in front of you with one hand and grabbed Jisung’s wrist with the other. He shifted so that you could hold his hand properly, fingers slipping between yours easily.
“Sorry,” you whispered in embarrassment.
“Don’t be. I used to be the same way on planes.”
“And how old were you then?”
“Um, six.”
“And here I am as a twenty-something year old-”
“Nope, none of that,” Jisung cut you off before you could finish the self-deprecating thought. He had a habit of doing that. Sometimes you found it endearing, other times it got on your nerves. You let it slide this time.
You smiled at him gratefully and relaxed into his shoulder. His hair tickled your face as his shoulders rose and fell in time with his breathing. His hair was long enough for you to twirl around your fingers if you wanted to. He hadn’t let it grow out this long in a while, and it reminded you of your sophomore year of college.
Back a couple of heartbreaks ago when your hair was short and his was long, when you both felt like you had finally gotten the hang of the whole college thing… you’d spent that Fall Semester laying on blankets on the green outside of the Dance Hall together, drinking spiked cider out of reusable water bottles as you spent what little pocket change you had betting on who could get more dancers’ numbers before the sun set.
It had been a simpler time then, but that’s how it always goes. The stakes creep higher and higher without giving so much as a warning and suddenly you’re clocking in on a Monday morning at your corporate 9-5 gig, your diploma and your ambition sitting in a box somewhere in your apartment collecting dust.
“Fuck that’s depressing,” you mumbled to yourself and let the hand that had been in Jisung’s fall to your side.
“What’s depressing?” Minho whispered, leaning across his brother to talk to you.
You lifted your head from your best friend’s shoulder and looked up to see him slumped to the side with his eyes shut as he breathed softly. You hadn’t even realized he had fallen asleep.
“What’s depressing?” Minho repeated, nudging your knee with the back of his hand impatiently.
“Growing up,” you replied with a sigh.
“Ah, yeah. Shit sucks,” Minho agreed.
“Yeah I was just… bumming myself out over here. Feel free to join.”
“Would one of those stories you were promised help?”
You perked up at his offer. “Are you fucking serious? Are you actually going to tell me one? Don’t tease me, Minho.”
“I would never,” he scoffed, the grin on his face telling you otherwise.
He glanced back at his brother as if to make sure he was still asleep before turning back to you.
“Right, so a few summers ago when Ji was home from college, we were out at a pub near our place. And for whatever reason Jisung had ordered himself a couple shots of tequila-”
“Oh my god. I already know where this is going.”
“You do?”
You rolled your eyes. “Tequila always makes Jisung horny-” you explained, freezing when you remembered that you were talking to his older brother. You stared down at the floor, trying to recover. “It always makes Jisung make irresponsible decisions.”
Minho blinked at you and pursed his lips. You so badly wanted to tell him that you only said that because every time Jisung drank tequila he hooked up with somebody, not because you were the person he hooked up with. But you couldn’t. You had to let him believe whatever the fuck he had thought you meant because you could never seem to shut the fuck up.
“It sure does…” he trailed off, eyebrows knit together in a mix of amusement and discomfort.
“Anyway, you were saying?”
Minho cleared his throat awkwardly. “So Jisung had downed a couple of shots of tequila, and I suppose he was feeling lucky, so he tried chatting up this girl-”
“Tried?”
“Yes, emphasis on tried. She had a friend, so he asked me to come over with him as well. And being the good big brother I am, I agreed.”
You narrowed your eyes. “The friend was hot, wasn’t she?”
“Fuck yeah, she was hot,” he admitted shamelessly. “But we go over there, and right away they’re not impressed. You know when some drunk assholes try and flirt with you at a bar and you’re just trying to have fun with your friends?”
“Unfortunately.”
“Well, we were totally those assholes. And to make it worse, we lied and told them we were students at the university across the street.”
“So they told you to fuck off?”
“No, when we told them we were students they were suddenly interested and wanted us to take them on a campus tour.” Minho sighed and shook his head at the memory. “So we did.”
“No you didn’t.”
“We did. I mean, we tried to. It started with pointing to random buildings and reading the names off of the signposts in front of them, and it ended with being escorted off of the premises by campus police.”
“What?” You blinked in disbelief. “What did you do?”
“Nothing!” Minho insisted.
“You don’t get kicked off a college campus for doing nothing!”
“Alright, we might have tried breaking into the science building to get to the rooftop greenhouse.”
“I fucking knew it.”
“A friend of mine who actually goes to that uni told me about it! He said he always takes girls up there because the doors are always unlocked and it’s a cool place for a date, but the doors were not unlocked that night.”
“Did you set off an alarm or something? How did security catch you?” you asked.
“They were walking by,” he said with a sheepish grin. “We were pretty wasted at the time so we didn’t hear them come up behind us.”
“Typical.”
“At least neither of the girls got in trouble. And Jisung and I were let off with a warning once we were escorted off the grounds.”
“I can’t believe Jisung’s never told me that story.”
“Probably didn’t want to ruin your romanticized image of him,” Minho suggested.
“We were friends way before we started dating, I know way too much about Jisung to have had a romanticized version of him in my head.”
“And you still chose to date him?”
You laughed. “Love is weird, isn’t it?”
Minho cocked his head to the side. “You love him?”
You hesitated.
“I- sorry if that’s too personal,” he added quickly and sat back up, increasing the distance between the two of you.
“I do love him.”
The answer was simple, because you did love Jisung. He was your favorite person, He knew everything about you. You always swore that you’d find each other in whatever lifetime came next. But you didn’t love him like you were supposed to.
“I’m glad,” Minho said. “He deserves it.”
“Don’t worry, you’re not going to have to go all Protective Big Brother on me,” you assured him. “I promise I won’t break his heart.” Because there’s no way I can.
He gave a tight smile. “Whatever you say.”
Next to you, Jisung began to stir. He opened his eyes and stretched, using it as an excuse to wrap an arm around you like they did in the movies.
“Smooth,” you said as you rolled your eyes, leaning into him anyway.
“What are you guys talking about?” he asked through a yawn.
“You.”
“All good things, I hope?”
You suppressed a smile and glanced over at Minho who was shaking his head at you with wide eyes.
“Minho told me the greenhouse story,” you blurted, sending an apologetic look in his direction.
Jisung whipped his head towards his brother and punched him gently in the shoulder. “Minho!”
“That was supposed to stay between us,” Minho groaned as he rubbed his shoulder.
“Dick,” Jisung muttered.
“Hey, we’ve all been kicked off of college campuses by security before,” you reasoned.
“We have?” Jisung asked doubtfully.
“No, but I’m adding it to my bucket list.”
“Look what you’ve done,” Jisung said to Minho. “You’re a bad influence.”
“So I’ve been told.”
