The Lore of Death

Someone asked me to explain the lore of The Clown. Behold, a condensed down version that's friendly for all your non-wrestling normie friends (as I make a concerted effort to avoid revealing this is wrestling related. Idk I found it funnier that way)

Once upon a time there was a woman named Kaori Yoneyama.

One day, she became possessed by the powers of death metal and began hanging around with some raver chicks with neon glow weapons called Tokyo Cyber Squad. She changed her name to Death Yama-san, and all was well for a long while. She had many friends.

However, due to very tragic circumstances, the neon ravers had to be disbanded, and Death Yama-san was left without a home. She was taken in by our resident heroes who go by the name Stars. They cast a magic spell on her to remove the darkness from her, and turned her into a happy clown by the name of Gokigen Death (lit. translation to I Am Good Mood).

Gokigen Death and Stars played together for a long while, until they were challenged by the forces of evil, known as Oedo Tai. They waged war, and after one gruelling battle, Gokigen Death was captured by Oedo Tai and corrupted by their darkness, turning her into Fukigen Death (lit. translation I Am Bad Mood).

She now runs around with them, causing mischief, reading the sports paper and smoking air cigarettes. There are also rumours she is an alien, but these are unfounded.

Today's Focus

05.30.24 - Well it's very sunny which is important because it is Thursday therefore there are food trucks downtown for me to visit for lunch today. It is not going to be overly warm, and downtown is windy so I'm expecting the temp to actually be a little cooler than when I did this last week. I hope y'all like this shirt, because it's now burned into my brain as a source of frustration so the fashion better be worth it.

Work - I need to contact a court reporter for a lawyer whose secretary is out for a week, but that's the only thing I left behind for myself. I'll take care of whatever comes in as it comes in; I like being on top of things.

Background Noise - Well I'm in the office so the background noise is YT with a focus on like pop media reviews and discussions.

I did seven YT videos yesterday which is pretty good for a day when I'm home and doing DVR stuff.

Study - Thursday is book day so I'm going to try and read pages of the books I have open. Let's see how well I do; books have been hard for me recently.

Yesterday I did seven full hours of content off the DVR, including two hours worth of Jeopardy episodes. I also managed to watch a couple of biography videos and I read half a dozen different articles so it was productive.

Extras - It is Thursday so I have to make sure the garbage leaves the house and heads to the curb. All the bills are paid, and I'm back to cooking, but cooking is easy; I'm roasting a pork loin, steaming the veggies in the microwave, and the potato salad was pre-made. I am doing three episodes of Kamen Rider Build tonight; I did cover the movie, but had to shower last night so didn't get the extra episode. Because there's a special after ep 18, I'm trying to make sure I spread the hours out throughout the week evenly. One more episode of The Tick tonight as well. Mini-essay turned into a full one, which you can read here if you'd like, and I did write a little more of a movie review yesterday so I'm going to try and keep on with that.

Silly fic musings below the cut

So just because I've said I won't write any more of Nellie's story beyond Dominion (but there ARE more prequels planned—lots of them) doesn't mean I don't have thoughts and HCs about what she's been up to since then. (Please, ofc I have them.) And idk I feel like sharing what I'm thinking re: her Stardom faction/happenings.

I'll recap her faction history in a nutshell since it's relevant. She started out Stardom in Queen's Quest and was with them for 3 years until Momo Watanabe turned on them to head up Oedo Tai (thus leaving QQ leaderless), at which point Nellie joined Cosmic Angels because she was tagging with Torrance at the time (their tag team name being Cosmic Queendom, get it?). (Prior to Cosmic Angels, Torr was in Tokyo Cyber Squad, if anyone is wondering.)

Now, Nellie leaves Cosmic Angels in 2023 because it's not a good fit, which is a huge plot point of the final fic. But while it's made clear that she's debating between either joining Donna Del Mondo or going back to QQ, I never actually state what she does, mainly because I couldn't definitively make up my mind 🙃 But I've been thinking.

So, Nellie is super close with QQ leader Utami Hayashishita and DDM member Thekla, but honestly? I don't know that her and Giulia get along. I think they're both too competitive to really be friends. And once I realized that, Nellie joining DDM didn't seem as ideal a fit as it did when I first started writing the final fic. But the only other faction I can really see her in is QQ. Which would be interesting given that she's also in War Dogs and I believe QQ are babyfaces? I know Japanese wrestling doesn't really follow the face/heel dichotomy as "strictly" as American wrestling does, but still.

But then I thought about how Saya Kamitani (who was Nellie’s tag partner back when she was in QQ, so more incentive to rejoin them) is injured. And then I started thinking that if Nellie rejoined QQ, she could tag with Utami and sort of be... I don't know, the more heelish of the two? Maybe even a bad influence of sorts?

Admittedly I don't really know at all what's going on in Stardom outside of what I'm exposed to on the dash because it's so hard to watch/follow, but yeah. My point is I imagine Nellie in QQ being a menace and Utami is just sort of like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Oh and I also imagine Nellie and Thekla having kayfabe "beef" because Thekla is heartbroken that Nellie didn't join DDM. It's a whole thing in my head. If anyone wants to talk about it my ask box is always open :)

kawajiri #6 - cyber city oedo 808

this one promises a trashy kickass cyberpunk suicide squad and that is exactly what it delivers. you got the dude with the pompadour, the classical anime femboy, and the big mohawk guy who's the hacker. together they fight crime. i watched this dubbed and i can't recommend it enough, the english dub is just fucking going for it. they don't make them like this anymore!

each episode is just a great one off cop story. the first is about pompadour man handling a hostage situation in a spacescraper (skyscraper that's so tall it exits the atmosphere) that's more than it seems. the second is about the hacker uncovering a broader government conspiracy when an old flame needs his help. and in the third one the femboy has to hunt down a god damn vampire, giving us the immortal line "get lost, you wouldn't recognize a goddamn vampire if one jumped up and bit you on the end of your fucking dick". you know, classic cop show stuff!

the hostage situation was fun but nothing special. pretty standard cyberpunk stuff, programmer set up a plan that's still being executed after he died and they have to figure out how to stop it. good action and strong vibes, as you'd expect from kawajiri, but not much else. the conspiracy is where it gets really fun, with some really great setpieces where they murder a whole bunch of soldiers and a fantastic finishing duel between gogol and the cool psychic cyborg warrior guy. and finally, the vampire episode has incredibly strong bloodlust vibes from a decade before kawajiri would direct that, and given bloodlust is one of my favorite movies of all time you KNOW i loved it. it's like if bloodlust was about 3 times trashier, which is a very winning formula. the scene where she confronts the old man in front of the moon is incredible. the emotional core doesn't really compare to bloodlust but the ending still hits. plus there are some really gruesome deaths in this one, it's fantastic

this is one of my favorites so far. it's ridiculous and fun and pretty straightforward, with basically nothing objectionable. i mean, that's funny to say about a show where a guy implodes violently on screen and where the main characters say fuck about twice a sentence, but you get what i mean. there's nothing that i didn't have a fantastic time with. interesting that this is kawajiri's first original work outside running man from neo tokyo, which was much simpler. i can definitely see how he got from here to bloodlust, and there's only a few things he did in between so i'm very curious.
