As a Russian I felt obliged to watch 80`s USSR Moomins (my mother grew up on them and loved Groke lol)

So I redrew and translated the moments from there

(I tried to translate as much as possible as in the original)

In fact, they are not as cursed as they may seem at first glance, I found them funny to watch, maybe it is because I am used to the look of such cartoons and do not find them scary (I really liked Sniff, he seemed to be the best character here, and Snufkin, whose brain seemed to have been taken away, killed me)

When your hat was sold to Groke, everyone made you conjure some bullshit all night, but gave you pancakes:

There was that Moominmama wanted to lose weight, but asked to conjure up a kilogram of ham, Snufkin asked for a typewriter (I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY)

here's a little list of things i remember from watching moomin as a kid that no one asked for

• having this weird attraction to alicia. turns out i'm lesbian.

• nightmares from the groke (canon event for every european kid)

• nightmares from edward the booble

• this weird blue guy with a purple jumpsuit and orange butt patches??? (couldn't remember his name until i joined the fandom)

• shipping tofslan & vifslan so hard. 6 year old me knew what was up

• a strong love for ninny that i still have

• moominpappa being found on a doorstep

• moominpappa pissing the bed

• actually just the entire first part of moominpappa's youth

• thinking snufkin was way older than moomin. i thought he was like 30 while moomin was like 7??

I feel bad for English speaking Moomin fans because some of the names are SO BAD in English

Like What do you mean Tofslan and Vifslan are called “Thingumy and Bob”??!??? ALSO THE WAY THEY SPEAK IN ENGLISH? Its just not as goodddd

They’re some of my favourite Moomin characters and I had a very hard time coming to terms with the fact that they have terrible names in English

forgot to post this! whoopsies! painting sketch of my Garden AU Tofslan and Vifslan designs :] (i am not calling them thingumy and bob don’t make me /lh)

design notes:

i based their designs off of hummingbirds and a liiitle bit of butterflies, looking back on it now they look like those one fairies from that guardians movie (?) LMAO so i was probably thinking of them in the back of my mind!

i imagine their noses kindof working the same way butterfly proboscises work ? Maybe…

im probably gonna revise Vifslan’s design a little bit bc im not happy with the wings 💔 (and maybe a little bit of Tofslan’s general design too) So expect a few changes the next time i draw them ! but for the most part i’m happy with these :]

First anime moomin redesign and... Rewritten?

Why not? What if the first anime adaptation had a remake in the late 70s, a little closer to the original characters, but keeping the innovations that I like (and plus add a little of my own, but that's a small thing). Like, maybe I’ll make a fanfic for fun.Moomin is the same, but maybe a little braver than in Shin mumin.The Snork Maiden is the same age as Moomitroll. She is a smart, modest girl, but she can be cheeky sometimes. Plays the piano.Sniff. The youngest of the company. A cowardly, profit-loving and money-loving boy.Snufkin is three years older than Moomintroll. Perhaps a slightly more pronounced dislike for prohibitory signs, houses and park rangers (they were not present in the anime, even in the lost episodes). Tireless adventurer.Little My is several months older than Snufkin, so she is the oldest in the company. She is extremely malicious, sarcastic and cunning.Mymble the younger - The girl is serious and straightforward. Loves herself and her luxurious hair. Elegant, quite friendly and responsive. Very romantic. At the age of 16, she ran away to Moominvalley with My (by chance, with her, her sister was 8 years old.)The rest of the character may not change much. Now look at the publication date.

(from the official site moomin com), "Thingumy and Bob (Swedish: Tofslan och Vifslan, Finnish: Tiuhti ja Viuhti) are recurring characters in the Moomin works. Tofslan and Vifslan, as names, were based on those of Tove Jansson and her girlfriend at the time, Vivica Bandler.

Thingumy and Bob speak strangely; in the original work, which is in Swedish, their language is created by adding a sla-syllable in the end of nearly every word.

(In another place of the official site,) "In the original Swedish, the characters are called Tofslan and Vifslan – echoing the names Tove and Vivica, for Vivica Bandler who was the first woman that Tove Jansson fell in love with.

Actually (it has hit me now), Tove ��> Tofslan & Vivica –> Vifslan

(In the translation into the language where I lived, the translator(s) used slightly changed names (without last n), but -sla in their words IS there :) In an article somewhere online, it was stated that ~ Tove wasn't completely all right with lesbian self (in relation to others' reaction, presumably), and this is why Tofslan and Vifslan. They cannot differetiate bad and good; this is why they did some bad things.))
