Toe bean Tuesday

Much like the human fingerprint, the pads on every feline paw is totally unique to that cat based on colour, shape and their breed. In the crazy cat community, these are called ‘toe beans’ or ‘paw jellies’ and are often the focus for online memes and people to rightfully fuss over. I’m guilty of this too; my camera roll is full of photos of my dad's cat, Alfie, in every cute pose imaginable. It’s impossible to resist his adorable cute face that says ‘feed me’ despite doing so 10 minutes ago. Don’t get me started on the 3am wake up calls either! Let’s face it, we wouldn’t have our fur babies any other way.

One lazy Sunday morning, I was having the first of many coffees with Alfie curled up in my bed, looking as content as ever. Usually he’s in his traditional croissant type pose. This time, I noticed his toe beans were exposed and immediately grabbed for my phone to capture the cuteness before I woke him up. However, upon noticing the individual strands of fur and slight creases in each toe bean, that was my chance to get up close and include those subtle yet impactful elements. Combined with the reduced background focus, the result emphasises even more on each toe and surrounding fur. It’s like Alfie knew how handsome he is and put up his best post for this shot. He’s not wrong though.

Animal photography is one area I’ve yet to fully explore, and I didn’t want this to be another of my many last second cat snaps. Even if it’s just one part of that subject, the finer details are what makes that photo and animal one in a million.
