the thing is that The Backrooms has spawned two very different communities: 1. Liminal pics community. There they just like passing pictures and videos of Liminal Spaces around and go "hm. yes. looks like the place where i held my 10th birthday. Very liminal"
2. Backrooms Levels community. These took the pictures from the first one and created an elaborate lore around a whole dimension consisting of interconnected Liminal Spaces that they call "levels", here there's creatures and monsters and survivor camps and stuff. This is where most "liminal horror" takes place.
Most people don't seem aware of the difference, and when they expect a certain post/game/video/etc to be from one community but find it's the other, they recoil and are left unsatisfied and with a bad outlook on the whole "backrooms/liminal thing" As I said, most games take place in the world of the second community, but there's a REALLY nice game called The Complex: Found Footage that is more in line with the first one. It's just you, the rooms, and the uncomfortable feeling of liminality. I saw a pair of streamers play it and one was going "oooh watch out, there's the monster!!!" every 10 minutes, expecting a monster to be there. There is none. This made the stream a very uncomfortable experience, but not a *liminal* kind of uncomfortable. Just unmet expectations.
The backrooms was kinda fun because it played with the concept of liminal spaces, which before being oversaturated was also fun (and still is, Liminal Argentina has become popular lately)
You can't make a survival game about the backrooms because it's not that kind of horror, you aren't surviving anything. You're in one of those spaces created by industrial civilization that look all the same. You could create horror, perhaps even videogames, based on that, but I don't think it's a question of survival.
