The grindarap: Faroe Islands

A few weeks ago

we wrote about the slaughter of whales that takes place every year in the Faroe Islands:

the grindadrap.

An event presented as tradition but that,

instead, is based on economic interests relevant for the economy of these remote islands.

The 2015 “event” directly affect the Italian foreign minister. Alice Rusconi Bodin,

italian citizen, was arrested for interfering with the traditional “grindadráp”,

the local whaling. An arrest that follows the arrest of another italian citizen,

Marianna Baldo, activist of Sea Shepherd, locked up in prison on July 23 for the same reason.

Referring to the authorities they,

and four volunteers of the Sea Shepherd coming from different countries,

could be “guilty” of raising between a pod of pilot whales

that were targeted to be slaughtered during a grindadráp and hunters.

Even then 61 pilot whales were pushed ashore and killed with blows of spears.

Their suffering has ended.

But the suffering of the protesters has just begun: Rudy de Kieviet, Lawrie Thomson,

Tobias Boehm, Alice Bodin and Frances Holtman saw their passports confiscated

and are being held pending trial.

It remains to be seen whether and what to tell the Foreign Ministry on this whole affair ….

Le billet musical 06

Tous les matins du monde. J’avais lu le livre de Pascal Quignard. L’adaptation filmée par Alain Corneau a mis des images sur ma lecture. Bien plus que des images, de la musique sur ma lecture.

Jean-Pierre Marielle reproduit à l’écran les gestes de Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, personnage essentiel du film. Il fait de la musique avec ses filles, fait de la musique seul, dans son refuge. Marin Marais, caché, à l’écoute de l’exigence du maître, apprend le mystère de la viole. C’est une voix qui nous parle.

Quelques semaines après avoir vu le film, j’ai  acheté la bande originale. Encore une découverte.

Combien de fois ai-je écouté cet album. J’ai, par la suite, attendu avec impatience les enregistrements de Mr Savall.

J’ai pu, un par un, écouter les cinq livres des pièces de viole de Marin Marais. J’ai cherché d’autres versions, Pandolfo, Charbonnier, Coin, plus récemment Joubert-Caillet. Quel ingrédient merveilleux ce compositeur a-t-il glissé dans ses partitions pour que soyons, trois cents ans après, toujours sous le charme.

Après Marais, j’ai écouté d’autres compositeurs, Sainte-Colombe père et fils bien sûr, Forqueray, Purcell et Joseph Bodin de Boismortier.

Je les abandonne, j’y reviens régulièrement. Ma dernière trouvaille c’est Tobias Hume, soldat et compositeur. J’écoute beaucoup d’autres musiques, mais, régulièrement, j’ai besoin de revenir à Marais pour me ressourcer. Comment la viole peut-elle rassurer, attrister ou combler en même temps, selon notre besoin ou notre humeur .

Je regrette parfois de ne pas avoir appris le violoncelle ou la viole. Si je revis un jour, si la réincarnation n’est pas une blague, j’apprendrai plusieurs instruments. Je pourrai alors interpréter moi même ces pièces qui me touchent tant.

Je dois vous quitter, je viens d’acheter «Les voix humaines», je sais que vous comprenez.
