this is… this is everything to me. this is one of the best things i’ve ever read in my entire life.

i know i usually talk about characterization and plot and shit like that in my posts but fuck that. not because any of those factors are in any way lacking in this fic, but because it honestly doesn’t matter half as much as pure emotional devastation of a very personal kind this brought me.

because i saw myself in this. i saw my every fear, every struggle, all the ugliest emotions i’ve ever felt about myself, all the times i thought about little me and absolutely fucking hated them for everything they were and all their parts that survived and made up who i am today. but this fic also healed this part of me, at least a little bit. reminded me of all the reasons i felt this way and how much i sometimes want to stop feeling that way. how much, however rarely, i sometimes want to hold my younger self and feed them our comfort food instead of shooting them in a dark alley. it reminded me that i was, in fact, just a child, and it was fucking unfair but i dealt with shit the best i could and if i feel like such a better person right now than i was then, it’s only because that kid, that teenager, that fledgling young adult really wanted to become what i am today and took the first horrifying steps to make it happen.

and well there was definitely sobbing and ugly crying and shaky breathing and blank staring at my ceiling contemplating my entire perception of my identity going on after i read this. and not only in the immediate aftermath but also like a couple of hours afterwards my mind just randomly wandered back to what i read and made me tear up a little bit. like. whatever. “for all you bitches asking why i kin jason todd” indeed. this felt like a gentle beautiful hug and also like a punch to the gut and i will be forever grateful for finding this fic. i want to print the entire thing and put in on my wall, for the times when i forget all the important things it reminds me about.

and this fic is also everything i love about fanfiction. the entire essence of what it means to me. the raw intimacy of seeing someone’s pain reflected in the story and finally feeling seen, because it’s your pain too. because you’re not alone in this and this person you know absolutely nothing about is holding your hand as you walk the same path they once did and showing you the way, or at least figuring it out alongside you.

i mean sure, whump and angst are cool, but have you ever sobbed like a little pathetic bitch because a character you see the most of yourself in is finally learning to be kind to themselves?

@doingthewritethings thank you so so much for writing this. this means more than any words can ever express. i don’t even want to rate this, because no number will ever be enough to reflect just how important this is to me. absolutely recommend, because whoever you are and whatever you went through, you might need to read this as much as i did.

As a bit of a year-end reflection (and belated birthday celebration for myself, which just blew by me last week), I wanted to put together a small collection of personal favorites from the fics I've written so far.

It's been a tough year, and it's had me coming back to these pieces again and again for various reasons. Art has always been a constant in my life, and there is something in the completion and release of it that I find inspirational to look back on.

Feel free to drop me an ask if any of these pique your interest. I ramble in these, about these, and generally about most things—which is a roundabout way to say, yes, I have lots of thoughts on them, and I'd love to hear yours :-)

They're all smutty with I think one exception, so. That's your warning. And they're all Steddie. Mind the tags as always!

Money, Power, Glory by @strangerthings1975 just wrapped and I'm an emotional WRECK because this story is fucking insanely good. Mutual pining, angst with a happy ending, communication is king, sooo much fluff even with the heavy themes. The summary from ao3: Steve starts paying Eddie for sex once he discovers that Eddie doesn't just deal drugs and perform at the Hideout. Strap tf in, heed the tags, bask in its magnificence. This fic is always on my mind, no exaggeration.

is your light on? by @toburnup I love how Vio weaves nuance and simplicity and still manages to have it all land like a ton of bricks. The slowest of burns, have aloe on hand!! Happy ending is guaranteed too thank god because I want to shake the shit out of these two sometimes. This story steamrolls my soul and lives rent free in my brain, and I'm so excited to read the chapter that just posted. I'm screaming!!

Tell Me "Don't" So I Can Crawl Back In They are disasters! They are everything! Steve ditches the old friends and decides to get friendly with Eddie. Steve surprises tf out of Eddie (and me) in this one, and it's a lottt of fun to read.

I can't tune you out by @hairstevington famous musicians Steddie, fake dating/enemies to lovers, slow burn, and Buckingham? Absolutely. Read it.

Tentative by @eddywoww Sapphic Steddie with Stevie in a ln all-girls pop group with Eddie as their assistant. Y'aaallll. Shenanigans. Delicious, thirsty shenanigans. I'm literally signed up for anything that Lee does. I Made Loving You a Bloodsport, Uneducated Guesses, everythinggggg.

Blood and Water by @aidaronan sapphic witches Steddie that has me so hyped to see what all is going to happen. I live for the vibes/aesthetic, and it's already so dark and juicy!

as good a place to fall as any by @rewritingicarus photographer Eddie and amateur model Steve. Oh. My god. I fucking love this story. It's so steamy, and come ON. The title coming from Bedroom Hymns by Florence + the Machine? I jumped on it as soon as I saw the title and I haven't looked back since. I crave the updates!

FIC RECS!!! Im so glad that you used the list and im more happy that you liked them!!! Admittedly im not in the tag as much as I was early on but I do still have a few recommendations!! All that it meant (and all that it did not) (by @yb-cringe) - Completed Fantsy AU fic focusing on Fit and Ramon. only has one chapter so far but I like it a lot. I don't want to spoil much, but the world building seems super interesting with Madagio and the border and everything. It's a prequel to a Fitpac fic that will get written later but I love fit and ramon fics so this is amazing. I'm really interested to see where it will go.

(Update: idk if the sequel fic is still being written but I love this fic anyways so it still has my recommendation)

I'm worried 'bout the future, aint fuckin' with the past (by @tastytoastz) - Completed Time Travel AU where Tazercraft travels back in time 8 years to 2b2t. If you haven't seen me reblogging every chapter of this and freaking out, please take this as the sign to read it. It's a wonderful look at how 2b affected Fit especially while he was in the middle of it, and how it still affected him years later on Quesadilla island. It's such a good fic like everything Toast writes <333

Lightning and Thunder (by ..... Tastytoast (you can fight me if me recommending literally everything toast has ever written is a problem (/j /lh)) - One shot were Fit has trauma from lighting storms on 2b2t and Pac comforts him when one causes him to panic. Very sweet fic of protective fitmc. It's also an english translation of Blixtar och dunder (also by Toast).

Maybe you really are Alive (by @yourfauxentropy) - On going (?), Detroit Become Human AU , only 2 chapters so far. Pac is Connor and Fit is Hank. I had a big dbh phase so im really looking forward to this one and seeing what they add

I think your roommate is hotter (by @fitpacs) - One-shot were Pac and Cellbit are friends with benefits but Pac meets Cellbit's new roommate Fit and it goes from there. It's really good and one of my favorites from Fitpacs. I read it a while ago honestly surprised it wasn't on my first list

hypotheticals (by @tinkatonic) - One-shot of Fit and Pac in different worlds, and in some of them they get to kiss. A bunch of mini peaks into different AU's like royalty, roommates, and a few others i don't want to spoil. But it's absolutely lovely and I love all of the au's so much.

Hideduo Stardew Valley AU (by @hepbaestus) - This is a series as opposed to a one shot or chapter-ed fic, but it's a Rose Family centric au series (including Rosa, Fitpacs fan child) They're all so cute, the last one made me cry. Im also happy that Richas is getting included in Rose Family stuff, i feel like he gets left out a lot.

to love is to be changed (by hepbaestus) - One-shot fic following the popular headcannon that the eggs adapted features of their parents, and this is when Ramon's eyes change to look like pacs. It's so sweet and wonderful. Hep my beloved.

Like a parody of Tantalus (by InconvenientImmortal; @shikai-the-storyteller here on tumblr) - Ongoing Pac centric fic that hasn't been updated in a while, but it's still amazing. It focus on pac's relationship with food, love, and him growing up. This first chapter is so wonderful and his relationship with Isa is so sweet. It's a wonderful fic and I love everything it's doing. Next chapter is going to be heavy but i'm still excited whenever we get it (i am very patient <33)

Teeth, Talons, and Hearts (by WyldChild) - On going modern au (i think?) where most of our cast were federation experiments but all broke out at some point and dedicate themselves to helping others who are lab experiments. They rescue 11 dragon hybrid kids and thats about where the fic is, but it follows Fit's pov and it's going to be FitPac eventually, and raising Ramon and Richas. It is a pretty dark au, the federation are EVIL, and the kids have been through hell, so pay attention to the tags and the warnings before reading. I can easily see how this isn't everyones cup of tea, but im liking it so far.

heaven found in a hellhole. (by kmsquill) - One shot purgatory fic where fit and pac get stuck in a hole hiding from Bolas and they spend that time talking and totally just being roommates. I think it's best described with two of the tags they have '#kissing #woah who put that kissing tag there' My favorite purgatory fic, honestly should have submitted it to the awards.

I said I had a few and i think this list is almost the same length as the last one. There's at least 4 more that I haven't read yet so i don't want to recommend them yet but once I do i'll probably make another post. Hope this has some stuff you would be interested in!!!

What's a fic you recently read and really enjoyed?

I am the worst at reading and keeping up with fics because I get too distracted (which is shameful and terrible because there are soooo many good ones i want to read), but I very recently read Quality time at Butt Farm by @tracingpatternswrites which gave me some very good laughs and is also sweet and a bit bittersweet in one particular place. Highly recommend.

I am also slowly working my way through the updates of As the Worm Moon Dies by @rollercoasterwords and my god, I'm so intrigued. I love the dark and the gritty and the guh!

As with last year, I found each of these fics, in their depiction of the ship, to be a fresh or surprising take on our familiar beloved characters of Harry and Tom|Voldemort, with an emphasis on underrated fics and/or fics that made me think about the ship in some new way. It's amazing to me that even after 20+ years of writing in this ship, there are still so many new themes and tropes and angles to explore. 

Criteria for this list: multi-chaptered, Tomarrymort-centric, with at least 1 update published in 2024.

I can't stop thinking about this scenario i'm your complicated universe:

Burdock is now showing off his granddaughter.

Thank you for letting me know: I’m so tickled!! It inspired me to write a small addition.

For context, Complicated is an in-Panem AU where Mr. Everdeen lives and this would have happened anyway happens much sooner.

Shout out to all who suggested names for the Toastbaby girl for this universe!

Haymitch first saw the girl at the Hob when she was just a baby. Burdock was so proud of her, toting her everywhere. Katniss soon outgrew his arms, trailing behind him with her own scrawny squirrels on her belt, until she was striding beside him with just as much to show as her old man.

They’d never mended the old wound, he and Burdock, but he still paid particular attention to the Everdeens. That way, if Lenore Dove’s ghost ever came to him, he’d be able to tell her of her kin— at least that’s what he told himself.

And recently there’d been a new branch added to the family tree.

Haymitch had watched the girl— Katniss, over the last several months as her belly’d swelled near splitting, until he’d worked himself up worrying it’d be twins— but then he’d learned the father was one of Otho’s boys and her size had made sense.

He’s heard she delivered— a healthy little girl, but it’s just luck that he’s at the Hob today when Burdie arrives, his bundle in tow.

He doesn’t see her right away, just the unmistakable pride on his old friend’s face as he introduces her around.

Haymitch has no reason to linger, his business with Ripper complete, but he can’t resist the urge to get a peek of the girl and any information he can glean, so he sidles up to Sae’s stall and sits at the booth. He ignores the old woman’s raised brow, carelessly pulling a fistful of coins from his pocket. Gone is the bribe and the questioning looks as the bowl of something he rather not contemplate slides across the counter. He hunches over the stew, running his spoon through the sludge, straining his ears to catch crumbs as Burdock moves closer.

Bits and pieces of conversations float over the chatter and Haymitch’s chest tightens at the sound of his friend's voice, so achingly familiar and comforting despite all the years, until the girl’s name shakes him out of his revelry.

Olive?

He scoffs, frowning at Sae’s knowing smirk.

Like the food? He supposes it’s an improvement from the tuberous roots for which mother and grandfather are named…

But no, it’s not just a food. He turns the name over again. It’s a color— green— a dark yellowish green like the moss that’s begun to grow over Lenore Dove’s grave stone, though he doubts that’s what the happy parents were imagining when they picked it. Still a nod to Burdie’s family perhaps? But color alone does not a Covey name make. He briefly wonders if there’s a ballad of Olive Mellark.

He really hopes not.

But there’s still something that nags at the back of his muddled mind. He closes his eyes to clear his head, but instead an image floods his memory: the floor of a Justice building on his tour long ago— a mosaic depicting a bird with a bough — no, that's not quite right— a dove with an olive branch.

He breaks into a sweat and his stomach rolls. Unbidden, his eyes seek out the source of his distress; the tiny girl, swaddled in a dove colored blanket, with a muted orange ribbon accenting the scalloped edge.

It’s as if someone has walked over his grave— no, not his— Lenore Dove’s— but aren't they the same thing? They’re a matched pair, mated for life, more married than any piece of paper could make them. And that girl is his kin too. Beloved and endangered if he cannot fulfill his promise to Lenore Dove.

“Don’t you . . . let it . . . rise . . . on the reaping”

He stands abruptly, knocking the stool over in his wake. He gives the girl— no, Olive, one final look before retreating back to his house. He won’t waste another minute; There’s work to be done.
