Thelreads, MHA 252, Replies Part 2

1) “I like how Bakugo is all “I don`t care about this family drama bullshit” looking away while still clearly paying the uttermost attention to what`s going on. Fucking Tsundere.”- Bakugou has never made any actual input or moving speech to Shoto’s family drama like Izuku has, but he’s deeply and perpetually involved in it nonetheless simply because he cares that much about somebody he considers a friend and rival, even if he’s never say it and would bite their windpipes out if they tried saying it for him 2) “That`s great right there, it`s a far cry from how other characters in other stories got away just by saying they had changed”- Endeavour’s character is a fascinating contrast to paragons like Izuku and Yagi. A man muddied by the mistakes of his past, who is not a natural-born hero but can still fulfil the role of the country’s best through diligent effort and unrelenting willpower, a man flawed and contemptable, but also strikingly noble and selfless at times when you least expect it. He really comes across as a human character, one that doesn’t have some great destiny or monumental charge placed upon him, yet nonetheless struggles because of his own hubris and past failures. Izuku is the ultimate cinnamon roll, but guys like him are one in a million, acting as paragons of what we wish we could be all the time, whereas somebody like Endeavour reflects the myriad mistakes that everybody makes going through life- the part of ourselves we’re not proud of, and wish we could take back now we’re older and wiser- and at the same time, also showcases the parts of ourselves that make up our best qualities, that allow us to be our best selves without forgetting where we went wrong before and must never do so again.

Huh. Interesting tittle…”- Well, he certainly was the ‘ending’ of something. That something being Endeavour’s futile wish of being part of his family’s life again.  Probably for the best he nearly killed Natsuo after all.

4) “Oh right, we were smack in the middle of the Todoroki hurricane, and my god is it being a complete mess. Well, Natsuo put it on the open as well, he wants his family to be happy, he wanted to be able to do the same as his siblings, but he just can`t, and that`s fine.”- Natsuo knows the dream of his family being happy together is the correct one to wish for, but he also knows that it’s right that Endeavour’s sins should not be glossed over by them all, no matter how miserable it makes them to remember, and thus he’s caught between two opposing ‘rights’, uncertain of which one to choose, whether to make his family happy, or take the moral route and stick to his guns about hating Endeavour for his mistreatment of them, even if it upsets the rest of his family.

5) “Well Natsuo, for starters, the usual sense of the situation implies that he will try to atone, which means he`ll be spending the rest of his life trying to make up for his sins, until the day he dies. So, in a way he can`t tell what he`s going to do, but rest assured he intends to do it forever.”- Endeavour has no way to know what tomorrow will bring, or even where he’ll be years from now. He just knows that wherever he is, he’ll never forget the lessons he learned far too late to fix his family, and that’s really all he can promise Natsuo at this point.

6) “fuck`s sake, I forgot Ending was there- Dude please, let the Todoroki`s do their thing right now, your contribution is over, kindly shut the fuck up I want to see the angst going up on this shit”- Ending’s got plenty of Angst going on himself over his second failed suicide attempt- sadly his has no way to stack up against the mountain of angst that is the Todoroki family, and all the assembled parties present frankly couldn’t give a toss about him one way or another. Not even Izuku’s gonna try and reach out to help a guy who’s so blatantly selfish about his decision to off himself and make himself the centre of somebody’s world for a moment before he shuffles off the mortal coil. If he wanted some help with his life and to get better, then maybe Izuku would try, but Ending has no interest in being ‘saved’, he just wants to get his excuse to bow out of the stage of life, and thus not even the smol cinnamon roll has any interest in trying to give this villain some much-needed therapy.

Cue to both of them looking back and seeing that todoroki is already two blocks away, still running like hell.”- That’s twice now that Todoroki’s taken down a villain with his father nearby and the old man is likely the one that the public will attribute to stopping the crazy lunatic, regardless of the actual facts. Sure, this time there were witnesses, but the kids were operating under Endeavour’s supervision, so they’ll likely assume they moved based on how he ordered them to.

8) “Mostly out of the streets, eh? Interesting… Almost like some sort of crawling Vigilante spent  a long time battling against the drug dealers that sold it, until he tragically died taking down the last Trigger factory, unknown to society, and the last few remnants of the drug were later taken down alongside the Yakuza, right? Right?”- Just because you stop them making more drugs, doesn’t mean there aren’t any still in circulation and storage by criminals who’re saving the power boost for a rainy day. Koichi’s likely fully wiped out the trigger factory by this point in the timeline, but him removing every single vial of trigger already on the market by himself is simply too tall an order. The only thing that can be done is to wait it out, as said drugs gradually dry up or turn up in related police/hero busts on villains.

AND DOUBLE FUCK YOU FOR NOT LETTING YOUR OL` BUDDY PAL-PAL SHOTO HEAR IT, HOW DARE YOU, I THOUGHT HIS FRIENDSHIP WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THIS”- So, the one thing we know with absolute certainty from watching Bakugou this far throughout the story is that he is one stubborn and dedicated punk. If he says he’s going to do something, no matter how impossible, then he’ll push himself to the limits and beyond to achieve that goal like he claimed, turning his arrogant bravado into a badass statement of intent. Therefore, we can guarantee that we won’t be hearing his hero name for a ‘long’ time, given he’s sworn to tell Best Jeanist it first before anybody else, and he’s not gonna find out Jeanest’s fate for at least 3 months’ worth of time, given how Hawks has to keep what he did a secret whilst infiltrating the PLF to preserve both his public image as a hero and his true status as the mole. Either way, there’s going to be some awkward confrontations happening once Hawks finally spills the beans, because you can tell the Icarus analogue is burning up inside from the guilt of having to keep the truth about Jeanest a mystery around those who care about him.

11) “Oh? We`re already done with the training? No, Endeavor said they would keep coming regularly, right?”- I think either Endeavour’s getting his affairs in order to move his family out of the house, and thus can’t devote too much time to their training, or he’s judged that by meeting his challenge, they’ve proved they’re now at the level where they won’t be a burden others during this war, but rather valuable assets. Even without him supervising them, they’ll still be training the skills they developed under him in their own time, so he feels justified in letting them go so he can turn his attention to more personal matters.

12) “And now, another hit of drama, it`s time for him to tell her that he`s leaving. Or at the very least that she also doesn`t need to forgive him, because he already came to terms that he shouldn`t be forgiven. Either one is fine.”- Actually, she’s leaving along with the rest of the family, whilst he stays behind with the family’s personal baggage in their house. Try as she might, that home simply has too many painful memories for the Todorokis as a whole for Fuyumi to turn it into a family home, so it’s simply better for them to move to a new place and start afresh, without any lingering memories getting in their way. This does mean that Endeavour will spend his days living with the ghosts of his family’s past in that house, and being tormented by his regret for what he destroyed, but again, it’s the very least he can do for them.

13) “HOLY SHIT HORIKOSHI DID A MASTER STROKE WITH THIS ONE, HE REALLY WENT THERE AND MY GOD AM I GLAD FOR THAT”- It really is a tasteful resolution to the whole mess- not a permanent solution to their problems, but the foundation upon which the family as a whole can start to really move forward from their past.

14) “Endeavor is still a monster, but holy shit must I say how much more I respect Horikoshi on this particular case. He had a lot of missteps and fuckups writing this series, sure, but I think that on this particular case he got shit right. Truly wonderful to see it being handled like this.”- When he sticks the landing, Horikoshi really makes an impactful statement, and its themes like this in a popular mainstream manga series that make me interested in how Horikoshi’s work is affecting public opinion in places with closed and rigid mind-sets like Japan. Obviously, he won’t cause a complete shift in the way the majority handle similar cases, but young people reading his story will grow up leering the lessons he preaches and challenging opinions that their elders take at face value, which will have a knock-on effect down the line-and he’s far from the only manga writer to be doing stuff like this. Truly, storytellers have more power than most people realise. @thelreads

“I’m giving it all up!” A masculine voice from the feet of Andraste’s statue exclaimed with conviction. “I made a vow to the Chantry, and it was wrong to turn my back.”

“Sebastian! Listen to yourself!” Another, a female, rebuked. “You’re as impulsive as the day you turned away from us! Do you really think the Maker wants another rashly spoken vow that you’ll abandon when the next passion takes you?”

Ah, so it is that once more. I had come to the Chantry to bring my mother’s offerings, and it appeared I arrived at the wrong moment. The Grand Cleric had taken upon herself to force Sebastian to reconsider his position towards a religious life, while the nobleman stubbornly insisted he was certain of his desire for taking on the mantle of Brother.

Perhaps I should leave discreetly, as I should not intervene in such affairs. Yet, I was curious about what would ultimately happen, and considering my services for Sebastian, killing off the Flint Company, rescuing the Harimann family and investigating the state of governance in Starkhaven, I supposed I was still heavily involved.

“I will not…”

He tries to argue but is promptly shut down by Elthina.

“This is your life, child. Don’t spend it being blown about like a weathervane.” Then, she looks at me from the top of the stairs. “There’s Hawke. Maybe she can talk some sense into you.”

I walk up to the statue. “Good afternoon, Grand Cleric, Sebastian. I bring this week’s tessera, in the name of the Amell family.”

“I’ll see to this.” She picked up the bag and left.

I, then, turned to Sebastian. “She seems frustrated. Is the Grand Cleric upset with you?”

“She thinks I’m fickle, but I mean it!” He insisted. “It was wrong for me to break my oath to the Chantry three years ago. I’ve turned against the Maker, and for what?”

The man paced angrily, trying to let out some frustration. “Why would I want to rule Starkhaven and deal with jackals like Flora Harimann for the rest of my life?”

“You sound like you have made a decision, already.” I pointed out.

He sighed. “No, I didn’t.”

I raised my eyebrow and motioned for him to carry on.

“When I think about going back to Starkhaven… Calling on allies like Flora Harimann, all the corrupt, scheming nobles, my throat swells shut in horror.” The archer said, an uneasy creak on his forehead growing more pronounced. “When I think about staying, I’m at peace.”

I sat at the steps of the staircase, and motioned for him to sit next to me, which he complied.

“Well, how about we look that from another angle?” I offered. “Let’s work with suppositions. What would you do, for instance, if you formally renounced the throne and joined the Chantry definitively?”

“Well, for starters, I must convince Elthina my commitment is sincere. Then, I will remain here, in Kirkwall, to represent the Maker’s interests the way she sees best.” He said, matter-of-factly.

I nodded. “How about Starkhaven, then? What would happen?”

“My cousin Goran remains on the throne. He rules until the day he dies, and leaves the throne to his offspring.”

“Well, didn’t you say your cousin was rather… simple?” I put it lightly.

“He has not been graced the sharpest of intellects, yes.” Sebastian confirmed, a mean smile graced his lips.

“It sounds like he is an easy target for manipulation on part of ill-intentioned noblemen.”

“I suppose there is a reason why Johanne chose to promote his rights for the throne instead of my brother’s.” He conceded.

“You know how nobles are, they are selfish and insensitive. Goran’s reign spells hard times for the common folk of Starkhaven. Perhaps you should give more thought about that, too.” I argued.

Sebastian scoffed. “I don’t have hubris enough to imagine it matters to the common people who rules them. Someone will take the reins. The fields will be planted, the crops gathered. No one will notice that a Vael lives and isn’t there, and I can devote my life to the Maker’s will on Thedas.”

“It most certainly matters to the common people who rules over them, Sebastian.” I said, full of conviction. “Perhaps more than it does for the nobles and merchants, and I ought to believe you agree with me, or else the doubt would not plague you.

“You are correct in assuming someone will take the reins, as for being the sovereign, there is always candidates. However, wanting to do the job and doing it right are two very different things.

“To rule,” I continued. “Is the art of negotiation, of striking compromises. It is no place for a puppet, whomever it is the master. Besides, you have the chance of doing something great for the little man of Starkhaven, you can protect him from those who only see him as a beast of labour, you can provide for him.”

“So, you are saying I should take the throne? Do you propose for me to go back on my vows?” He asks, with an edge of his voice.

“I speak no such thing.” I countered. “You do not have to be Prince, but you do have a moral imperative to leave Starkhaven in good hands. If those hands are yours or of others’, that is for you to define.”

“I see.” He sighed. “You are right, of course. However, this discussion is moot. I cannot return to Starkhaven and submit my people to war without a clear sign this is the Maker’s will.”

“Sebastian, dear, don’t you think you are asking too much out of the Maker?” I said, sweet but firm. “You are not Andraste. He will not speak to you. He will not tell you what to do. Look for a sign will only serve to soothe your fear, and while this is all fine and good, your omission is as significative and impactful as your actions.”

The man stood up. “You do not understand, Hawke! I made a vow to the Chantry, and I refuse to turn my back to it once again. The Maker was there for me when I had no-one else, I will not forsake it once for the first thing that comes up. I will live a righteous life, and I will exert His will.”

I looked deep into his light eyes and said, “Very well, Sebastian, but I do not remember the part of the Chantry that says the Maker has an abacus to take count of our sins like they are cattle on a field.”

“What does this have to do with anything?!”

“I mean that there is no action on a void, Sebastian. We are not isolated in the world, nor our decisions are self-contained. You paid for the murder of the Flint mercenaries, yet now they cannot do any more harm to anyone else. You were wrathful with the Harimanns, but you banished a demon from this earth.

“You did good with your evil. Is it invalid just because it does not follow the doctrine to the letter? Did it destroy everything you built in the last seven years? What about me? Am I wicked for assisting you?

“Life is messy and difficult and painful, and the logic the Maker uses to judge us is beyond our understanding. We will all go out on the other side a little bit like Andraste, and a little like Maferath.

“There is no problem in going back on a few promises, if the end result is the happiness and prosperity of a city. If it means you will make every day of your life a day in the public service.

“Besides,” I also rose to my feet. I kept my eyes glued to his, despite me being rather shorter than him. “You are not alone anymore. While you keep a righteous path, I can assure you the sisters will have you, and if they don’t, you will still have me.”

I hugged him tightly, letting the smell of mint from his robes fill my nostrils. “I know you are trying to do right by the world, and I will support you, Prince or priest. I can only hope, however, that you heed by my advice and do right for Starkhaven, too.”

His tanned arms encircle my shoulders and pull me closer. “Thank you, Hawke. You gave me plenty to think about. I promise you I will do my very best.”

“That is all we can ask of you.”

Adrien and Marinette have a loooong talk.

“And then you, Nino and Manon came back and that was the end of the conversation.” Marinette was on the phone informing Alya of what happened earlier that day at the wax museum. Her humiliating moment of confessing to a Wax-Adrien only for it to turn out to be the real Adrien and the subsequent agonizing talk that ensued in the long elevator ride.

“Oh girl, I am so sorry,” Alya sounded like the experience had wounded her, “I cannot even begin to fathom what that was like.”

“It wasn’t pretty. I wanted to evaporate into thin air the moment I realized Adrien wasn’t a statue.” Just thinking about that moment gave Marinette a bad case of embarrassment PTSD.

“At least it turned out okay.” Alya tried to assure her, “He didn’t reject you and you said that you two were going to talk about it, right? There’s still hope.”

“I’m hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Just because he didn’t reject me right then doesn’t mean he won’t decide he doesn’t see me that way later. If anything I could just be delaying the inevitable.” Marinette laid back on her bed. The picture of Adrien surrounded by hearts staring down at her.

“That’s not the super confident Marinette I know and love. You gotta have more faith in yourself. The boy basically said that you were the most wonderful girl in the entire world. He said he felt something for you! I think you should be a lot happier right now.”

“I am happy. Truly!” Marinette’s face warmed as she recalled Adrien’s speech about how great she was. “But I have enough sense to not go putting all my eggs in one basket. I’m gonna go into this with a level head and leave it with the same kind of grace. I really like Adrien and I don’t want our friendship to suffer if this doesn’t end up with us together.”

“Since when did you get so mature?”

“Since I had to drop my fantasy and face reality.” Marinette sighed, “Now all I have to get through is the conversation with Adrien.”

“When is that happening?” Alya asked.

“Sorry to say but I’m not telling you that, Alya.” Marinette smirked into the phone.

“Why not?” Alya whined.

“Because this really only concerns me and Adrien. So I don’t need you or anyone else snooping around eavesdropping and trying to ‘help’ the situation.” As innocently as Alya may have meant it Marinette knew that she could get just as carried away in a plan as Marinette tended to.

“It’s called moral support!”

“It’s called this is gonna be a tough, awkward, and probably really emotional conversation between two friends that are deciding whether they should date or not and I don’t want everyone poking their noses into it.” Marinette corrected her.

“You’re right.” Alya sighed, “It’s not right away is it?”

“No. Today was exhausting and we’re both busy with schedules and deadlines tomorrow so it’ll be a good time to rest and think about it on our own.”

“If you want I can get Nino to hype you up to Adrien. Really let him know what all he’s getting if he decides to date you.”

“Oh no you don’t!” Marinette sat up straight in her bed, “I think you and Nino helped plenty today!”

“It kinda worked out in the end…” Alya mumbled.

“Alya, please, for the sake of my already stressed mind and heart, don’t mention that I told you this to anyone. Especially to Adrien. Can you do that for me? Can you not get involved?”

“If that’s what you want, girl. I promise not to meddle in your love life. If you two do start dating though I recede my promise.”

“Alya!”

“Joking. You need to chill. I don’t want to get your hopes up but I’m telling you that Adrien is gonna adore you. He’ll see that you two are made for each other and then you’ll live happily ever after.”

“Thanks, Alya,” Marinette relaxed again. “It’s getting late. I’ll talk to you more tomorrow.”

“Night, Marinette. Talk to you tomorrow!” She hung up.

Marinette stared at the ceiling of her bedroom as the events of the day settled on her. Adrien wanted to explore his feelings for her. He wants to see if there is something truly their between them. It seemed too good to be true!

As rational as Marinette tried to be she couldn’t help but let her mind wander to the best possible scenario. A final fantasy to lull her to sleep. Adrien and her having a nice, long talk. Adrien telling her that he wants to be with her. Adrien asking her on a proper date. The two becoming boyfriend and girlfriend. Adrien and her having a real first kiss! The two of them becoming so comfortable around each other that being together seems more natural than anything in the world.

Marinette held the dream close for one last night. In the morning she would be sensible once more but tonight she wanted to dream.

The next day really helped to calm Marinette’s nerves about talking to Adrien again. Mainly because she was doing fifty billion other things so her mind didn’t linger all that long on him. Occasionally she’d find her mind drifting before snapping back to the project at hand.

She got a text from Adrien that night asking her when she wanted to talk. It took a lot of hashing out but they agreed on Tuesday afternoon after school. It was a short day and Adrien was able to clear his afternoon so there wouldn’t be any time crunch. Marinette suggested they take a walk down the Path of Swans. It was the off-season so there shouldn’t be a lot of people. A nice, calm, place to walk and talk. Maybe sit down on a bench and watch the river while they munched on some cookies.

The day came and Marinette couldn’t help but be a little nervous. This really was her own personal judgement day of sorts. Adrien and her were gonna have a conversation and it was either gonna end with them together or not. A lot was on the line but she couldn’t let that scare her.

After school let out Marinette went home to drop off her bookbag and grab the bag of cookies she had made for today. Alya hadn’t said anything during class but Marinette could tell she knew that today was the day. She looked herself over in the mirror once more and took a deep breath.

“Are you ready, Marinette?” Tikki asked.

“Ready as I’ll ever be.” Marinette opened her purse for Tikki to sit in. “Wish me luck.”

“You don’t need it but good luck, Marinette. Everything will work out, you’ll see.” Tikki rubbed her head against her chosen’s cheek before zipping into the purse.

Marinette made it to the Path of Swans right on time. Adrien was already there waiting at the top of the steps for her. It was a chilly autumn day so he was bundled in a chunky knit sweater and the scarf she made him for his birthday. Why did he have to be wearing the scarf? Wasn’t this already emotionally compromising without that reminder of how much love and care she exerted into him wrapped around his neck?

“Hey,” he gave a small wave, “Glad you made it.”

“I brought cookies.” she held up the bag of fresh chocolate chip cookies she had baked.

“Cool.” they lapsed into silence.

“Do you wanna--” “We should--” They said at the same time.

“You go.” Marinette said.

“Walk? I mean, do you wanna walk? With me? Should we start walking?” Adrien pursed his lips, “Now I’m the one with word vomit.”

“Welcome to my world.” Marinette chuckled.

Adrien smiled at her and motioned for her to take the lead, “After you.”

They descended the steps and started the walk down the path. The autumn cold snap and foggy weather made it a quiet day along the path which was good. No nosy joggers or lost tourists to distract them. The fallen leaves scattered the walkway in shades of orange, yellow and brown.

“You look nice, today,” Adrien said, “New cardigan?”

“Yeah,” she tugged at the fuzzy ivory sleeves, “I finished it yesterday.”

“Fleece?”

“Yep.”

They lapsed into silence once more.

“I’m sorry, I don’t really know what to say. I had this whole speech prepared but it seems so ridiculous now.” Adrien scuffed his shoe through the damp leaves, “I’ve never been in a situation like this before.”

“I don’t want to break your heart or get your hopes up but I also need you to know that I do like you. I had a lot of time to think about what we talked about at the museum and it would be ludicrous to stand here and say that I don’t feel anything for you.”

“I feel a but coming.” Marinette braced herself.

“But you have to understand that this other girl, I’ve been in love with her for so long. She’s amazing and even if she doesn't feel the same way there is a part of me that doesn't want to let her go."

"I understand. I've been going through the same thing with you and Luka."

"So how did you choose?"

"Simple. I haven't."

"But I thought--"

"This is why we're out here, Adrien. It isn't just you deciding if you want me but I am also figuring out if I want you too." It was a point that Marinette realized she needed to make sure they addressed. Adrien wasn’t the one with all the power here. While Marinette did want to be with him her decision wasn’t set in stone.

"That doesn't make this more complicated or anything." Adrien muttered.

"Dealings with the heart are never easy. Trust me." Marinette was glad that she didn’t need to mention a third black clad partner that was head over heels for her hero supersona. Bundling Chat Noir and Luka into one entity as the other man in her life wasn’t fair but it’s not like she could tell Adrien her secret.

After a few more silent steps Marinette took the plunge.

“This other girl, do I know her?” She asked hesitantly.

“You could say that. Everyone knows her at this point I suppose.” Adrien was blushing. That or the cold was nipping at his cheeks and ears.

“Am I competing with a celebrity crush?” Marinette teased lightly.

“Sorta. I mean, she is famous and I do know her personally but...it’s complicated. I just…” he trailed off, “I feel like there is a chance for us. That one day she’ll say yes and we’ll ride off into the sunset. But I also know that she’s in love with someone else and I fear that if I keep making advances then maybe one day she’ll snap and not even want to be friends anymore.”

“Oof,” Did she really just say oof to Adrien’s heart troubles? Idiot.

“Big oof,” Adrien chuckled half-heartedly. His face fell back into seriousness and he shoved his hands deep in his pockets. “And now with you I feel like I’m being unfaithful to my first crush. But then I remember that she’s in love with someone else so me having a crush on someone else shouldn’t matter. Then that comes back around on me because it makes me feel like I’m treating you as a fall back or second best when that’s not the case. I really like you and appreciate you as a friend and I don’t want you to feel as if I’m settling for you because I can’t have my first pick. You’re wonderful in your own way and I--I just--”

“You wish that you had never developed feelings for one of us so you didn’t have to play a relationship invalidating game of who is better.” Marinette could tell exactly what he was trying to get at.

“You put it in words,” Adrien sighed. “I don’t regret having feelings for either of you and wouldn’t trade the experiences for anything in the world but at the end of the day a decision needs to be made.”

“I mean not if you’re open to a poly relationship.” Marinette shrugged, “But I don’t think throwing that monkey wrench into an already complicated teenage relationship is the best thing.”

“Agreed,” Adrien nodded.

They continued on taking a small breather to eat some of the cookies Marinette brought and gaze at the misty world around them.

“We should do stuff like this more often.” Marinette said. “Not as a date thing but in general. I like talking with you and getting an afternoon to breathe in the fresh air with no deadlines is something I didn’t realize I was missing.”

“It is really calming.” Adrien took in a deep breath of autumn air. “No matter how this afternoon ends, we should do this again. You, me, a long walk and a bag of cookies.”

“I’d like that.” Marinette smiled.

They started to walk under the biggest growth of the trees, their branches bent like a forest archway. Little drops of dew water dropping from their branches and splattering on the walkway and the young pair’s heads.

“Well,” Adrien said, “You know all about my messed up heart troubles. What about yours? Why are you hesitating between me and Luka?”

“I know it was unrealistic to think but a part of me was hoping we didn’t have to keep talking about this.” Marinette groaned inwardly.

“I think the biggest difference between you and Luka is that with Luka there is no pressure. There’s no guessing game about his feelings for me. I know that he likes me. He’s told me so. He confessed and never pushed me for a response.” Marinette stated. “With him everything is easier. I don’t get so nervous or tongue tied around him. He likes everything about me just the way I am. Even knowing how I feel about you he doesn’t make a big deal of it. Heck, he’s encouraged me to go after you before. He’s so good about my crush on you. Never acting bitter about it or trying to convince me to move on. He lets me sort out my own feelings in my own time.”

“Wow.” Adrien processed the information, “Makes me wonder why it is even a competition. Sounds like anyone would choose Luka. I’d choose Luka.”

“Like I said back at the museum,” Marinette rolled her eyes with a laugh, “Luka is great but he’s not you. The way I like him and the way I like you are two completely different things. It’s the same kind of problem you have. I don’t want anyone to get hurt with my choices.”

They stopped at a bench and sat down so they could overlook the river.

“I have an idea.” Adrien said, “It’s not perfect but I think it may help us figure things out.”

“I am all ears.”

“What if we did a trial run?”

“Huh?”

“You know,” Adrien started fidgeting with his ring, “What if we acted like a couple for a bit. Got a feel for how we mesh together and if one or both of us feels like it isn’t right then we can stop. No commitment.”

“Oh,” Marinette clutched her cookie bag tighter, “That um...that is…”

“If you’re not for it then disregard everything I just said. It was a dumb idea anyway.”

“Stop that.” Marinette calmed him, “It’s not dumb. In any other circumstance I think it would help but I don’t want to waste time on a halfway relationship.”

She looked him dead in the eyes. “I want this, Adrien. I want to have a real relationship with you and only you. But I’m not the only one that needs to want this.”

“I do want to give this a try. I want to see where it goes.” He impressed, “If we explore this and it turns out that we decide it isn’t for us then what do we do? I don’t want either of us to walk away from this with a broken heart or even worse an angry one. Isn’t there anyway to test the waters before we jump in all at once?”

“I understand where you’re coming from. The fact of the matter is that I don’t want to wait around for three months hoping for this to turn into something and you ultimately deciding that it isn’t for you. We can take things slow if you want, there’s no rush to be connected at the hip. But at a certain point of waiting it’s not you deciding whether you’re ready or not but you stringing me along. I care about you a lot, you mean so much to me, but I know I deserve better than that. So...I need an answer. A real answer. You don’t have to make a decision right now but if I’m not what you want then I’d rather you tell me sooner rather than later. That way I can move on and we can both be content in our lives.”

She blinked rapidly to banish the stupid tears threatening to spill out. “I know I sound like I’m being demanding but I’ve made my choice. I want you to know that it is okay to say no. I don’t want you to say yes because you think it is easier or out of some sense of guilt. I might be a bit sad but I could never be upset at you for doing whatever it is that makes you happiest. All I am looking for right now is your honesty. Whatever you choose I will still be here for you as your friend.”

“Marinette…” Adrien gripped the lip of the bench seat. So many thoughts and feelings battling for space. He looked back at her. There was no pretense. No wall. This was her heart stripped away of all its inhibitions. So vulnerable and trusting and brave. Just like her.

“I--I want to go on dates.” he stammered, “I want good morning texts and goodnight phone calls. I want to hold hands and get ice cream. I want to cuddle on a couch and watch movies. I want someone who I can be myself around. I want to be a listening ear and shoulder to cry on. I want someone to serenade with piano but will also laugh at my bad jokes. I want a relationship with someone who is not just my girlfriend but my friend as well. And...and I want that person to be you, Marinette.”

She stared at him. Not quite shocked but neither happy either. “You mean that?”

“Yes. I mean it.” he smiled as the truth of it truly resonated with him, “I want you, Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”

She leaned closer hugging him tightly. Her face buried in his shoulder. He could faintly hear the sound of whimpering coming from her.

“Are you crying?” he started to panic.

“I am so tired.” she laughed through her tears, “You’re gonna be the death of me, Adrien Agreste.”

“Marinette, I’m still pretty bad at social cues so I’m not sure if this is good or bad right now.”

“Good.” Marinette wiped her eyes, “Very good. I just...I was so nervous about all of this. I know what I wanted to happen but there was still the anticipation that you would reject me and now that it’s over I’m getting a little emotional.”

“I understand that,” Adrien breathed out in relief, “I had to grab the bench to keep from shaking.”

“We’re regular disasters.” she pulled another cookie out of the bag and shoved it into her mouth, “Care to eat your feelings with me?”

“Yes, please,” he took a cookie and crammed it into his mouth. They sat there for a minute silently finishing off the rest of the cookies and letting their nerves melt away.

They got up to throw away the now empty bag and decided to make the full lap around the path. They certainly had the time since they had cleared their schedules for this talk.

“Can I--may I--” Adrien cleared his throat, “Can I hold your hand?”

“Sure,” Marinette was going to die. He was so shy!

He laced their fingers together and swung their arms gently as they walked.

“We don’t need to tell everyone about this, right?” Marinette asked. “I’m not like embarrassed or anything, I promise. I figured that since we are going to need a little transition time to get used to this that it would be best if we didn’t let all our friends know right away.”

“I like that idea.” Adrien said, “Plus, it’ll give us some time to ourselves without any outside interference.”

“That’s what I’m saying. Until we are more rooted and comfortable with this dynamic no one else can meddle in it.”

“Not even Nino and Alya?”

“I love them but I already had to forbid Alya from spying on our talk today. When we’re ready they’ll be the first to know.”

“And our parents?”

“Maybe the second to know. My tendency to go overboard I got from my dad. If he found out that we were dating then he’d jump right into the big questions that we’re trying to avoid.”

“I have no doubt my father would approve of you but he also gets really protective when there is a new big change in my life.” Adrien admitted, “He’ll probably be easier going if we have some time built up behind it.”

They finished their walk and Adrien gave Marinette a ride home. With a quick goodbye kiss on the cheek Marinette bolted into the house and grabbed the nearest pillow to muffle her giddy squeals of joy.

Bloggin’ bout HS^2 Commentary from start to Mid-Jan-2020

Sigh.  Time to pay the piper.  Someone’s gotta extract whatever plot-important and plothole mentions get mentioned in this commentary, even though reading behind-the-scenes stuff about Homestuck makes me even more nervous than reading frontend stuff ever could so I don’t really want to.  FYI, that’s what you’re going to get out of my posts on these -- anything regarding plot stuff and plotholes, things we would’ve misinterpreted or missed otherwise, not any of the other paid content such as sketches or full quotes from them about things.

TWENTY FUCKING DOLLARS A MONTH!???!??  Is Andrew even seeing any of this cash?  --no, not much of it I guess, he would want to make sure the WP folks get paid enough after the--

Yeah I’m not gonna even think about that.

Fuck it.  I’m ponying up.

Alright, first commentary post on the Patreon, commentary and bonus sketches for Ghostflusters... whoa, this is long and extensive.  Is it going panel by panel??

I guess I’ll give you a small quote just for a taste of how this starts...

Page 33:  Not sure what any of this shit means. It’s pretty deep though. We were going for an echo of the beginning of the epilogue when John is dreaming in anime. Except here it’s Jake, and nobody is dreaming, at least not yet. Also an anime dream wouldn’t be a nightmare for Jake, since Jake likes anime. Or he used to. Now anime probably just reminds him of Dirk.

Good thing we’re never gonna hear from that guy ever again.

...because this commentary is sort of stylized.  They’re kind of riffing on what they’re doing, and I get that -- when you have to write commentary you’re asking people to PAY for you can easily feel like you have to be entertaining.  But they are describing the rationale for the shot choices they made and such.  They’re also going for a sort of Andrew-recap sort of attitude, and I don’t blame them for that choice, either.

[Candy] Jade is...well, you’ll see.

GOD DAMNIT.  Don’t remind me that Dave vanished on her forever while they were doing pro-revolutionary work and she’s probably going to be in a bit of a state!  Stupid knowing author future allusions...

Then again, that’s exactly why I’m here blogging about the commentary for you guys -- for me to relay Authorial Intent on Stuff That Happened That Seemed Plotholey and Hints About What’s Going To Be Relevant.

I just, uh... didn’t expect there to be that MUCH of it.  And that casual phrasing for that Candy Jade Is Going To Be Seen And Or Relevant hint is... kinda indicating to me that there’s gonna be a LOT more of that here than I wanted.  :|

Continuing... there’s talk of why they started with Jake here, being unused to writing for middle-aged characters in Homestuck terms, et cetera, but again, I’m only here to relay anything with plot impact or SERIOUS perspective on how we should / the authors are viewing this.  The rest stays behind the paywall for whichever of you all think it’s worth $20, I don’t really have a choice.  At least now I know why there was no one to tell me what details were actually BEHIND the paywall.  Seriously, that’s steep.

Speaking of how stylized the commentary is here, I can get why some might read it and view the authors as slightly callous -- I’m giving them PLENTY of benefit of the doubt, though.  Andrew was FAR from callous and he hurt us worse out of love of artistic intent with the Epilogues than the HS^2 folks could EVER hurt us.  Real Dirk-like, actually.  Dirk is practically half of a self-insert, as we well know.  No wonder Andrew thought the right thing to do was to take his hands off the story, what with Dirk’s villainous action being putting his own hands ON the story.

We like to make fun of Jake English as much as the next guy, but he probably is actually pretty good at “doing things” if the need arises. 

Mhmm; there are some jibes at how screwed up Jake has made his life, but I don’t believe these authors actually disrespect Jake at all.  He was dealt a bad hand by the story leading up to this point (quite INTENTIONALLY by Dirk’s narrative control in the Epilogues, too) and HS^2 and its bonuses so far have been exploring the heap of merits and potential he’s still got in him.

It’s kind of sweet how he wants to clean out his ecto-son’s house, even if most of that is to prevent the slow creep of mounting existential dread and narrative relevance. 

Huh.  So they think Jake can sort of feel that narrative relevance is seeping in around him, to him?  That’s not out of the question at all.

Continuing... they’re going on a bit about the same sort of things I mentioned about their choices in detail or detail-less-ness when depicting people in this new format, considering ages and the paired text descriptions and such.  That’s the sort of thing you’d traditionally want to pony up for commentary for, so rest assured that all that IS in their commentary posts if you want to do that.  I’m kind of extracting the plot stuff out of the paywall just on principle.

A lot of making this comic--and every other comic ever--is trying to convey as much information with as little space as possible.

Quite so.

From this conversation we find out a couple things. 1) that Brain Ghost Dirk knows about Ultimate Dirk, and he thinks he’s a dickhead. 2) Brain Ghost Dirk knows who Jeff Bezos is, and Jake doesn’t. This could be a sign of a couple things, all of which are probably stupid. 

This is ALSO what I came here for:  Legitimate “don’t worry about it” handwaves about stuff that shouldn’t matter to us.  I never ascribed the slightest bit of relevance or inference to BGDirk making a Jeff Bezos reference, and I’m glad I was completely justified in ignoring it.  So far I agree with this probably-plural-but-acting-like-a-singular author’s train of thought.

Come to think of it, it’s maybe strange that in this Cool Future Earth where all of our characters are rich as hell, none of them have bothered to have any sort of corrective eye surgery. Jane, Jake, John, and Jade all still wear glasses. I guess they do have “signature looks” to maintain in regards to their brand. 

I had to include this, I was legitimately curious.  Understood it was probably an artistic decision to stay on-brand a fair bit -- and losing glasses even temporarily has a lot of thematic significance whenever it happens in Homestuck Proper -- but it’s nice to have some confirmation that this was the understandable rationale behind the choice.

Here we find out what Dirk thinks about Jake’s behavior of the last few years. In other words, we find out what Jake thinks about Jake’s behavior over the last few years. [...]

[Brain Ghost] Dirk is manipulating Jake here, but he isn’t actually saying anything demonstrably untrue. 

Again, most of this was obvious at the time, but it’s nice to have authorial confirmation on what was being brought across as per the strange divide between Brain Ghost Dirk’s independent will and his mostly-part-of-Jake status.

Seriously though, shoutout to the conceit that god tiers can just fly endlessly, with no visible effort. It’s a really excellent form of narrative shortcut that fits perfectly into the bonkers vibe of earth c as a whole. Oh there goes one of the Creators, just flying over the Wal-Mart like an asshole. 

You know... who IS doing the commentary here?  One of the authors, all of them?  One of the artists??  This really is a COLLABORATIVE effort between the authors and artists involved here, I think, and it shows in their clear surprise and appreciation for each others’ work that only settles into a full understanding instead of just knowing what one intended off the bat.

It calls into question exactly how much of the Condesce’s mind control was actually mind control at all, and how much was just a lowering of inhibitions. 

Right, right.

We see Jane greeting Jake here with open arms, which makes you wonder exactly what is going on here. If you’ll remember from Candy, Jane has already served Jake divorce papers. A mystery in need of solving, for sure. 

HERE we go!  This is the potential plothole we were concerned about that got me alerted that the commentary had something to add in the first place.  John mentioned toward the trail-end of the Candy epilogues that divorce papers had shown up for Jake.  (And we also saw an HS^2 update ago or so that Jane hadn’t actually KNOWN Tavros was “awol” at all until he was literally a part of this whole clowncorpse logistics business.)  So in light of what this post continues to say:

It could be that Jane has put aside the nasty business of their divorce in order to have a strong chest to cry on. Can’t really say I blame her. Jake English has many flaws but he does seem like a good person to drape yourself across and really let loose on. And without Gamzee there, Jane needs another punching bag. 

...it all finally fits as pretty logically consistent, although the author is being deliberately coy in a way that leaves it open for more to be revealed later about exactly how this is happening.  Good!  No obvious plotholes in HS^2 (yet).  That’s an honest relief.  The more often they have something in mind where I’d previously worried they’d screwed up, the more often I can give them credit and speculate properly on those gaps in story-logic expecting something there, like we so often got to with Andrew before the retconsplit made even THAT kinda fucky.

If you’ve ever had a friend or family member go evil, you’ll know that one of the hardest parts is there’s always still elements of them that you like.

I can definitely say that from nearly personal experience.

Also, at this point in the story there is no lingering doubt that Jake and Dirk have had a sexual relationship. There’s a familiarity there that wasn’t around when they were teens. 

I assumed so, but I guess I never thought ABOUT how I assumed so.  Huh.

Do any of the creators have a moral leg to stand on if all they’re doing is curling up into a ball and hoping the world gets better without them? Actually, does anyone have a moral leg to stand on if they do that?

Taking over Earth C's business world certainly would have required rubbing shoulders with the already-powerful on the planet.

Ah, looks like the bonus commentary is a good deal shorter!  But that bonus section was a good deal shorter than the story section covered earlier too, so.

On to the next one, for Clown Logistics.

Page 58: If you love Vriskas, i hope you enjoy more Vriska content. If you hate Vriskas, well. Here is another one that is kind of different. Feel free to contemplate nature vs nurture and how best to apply this dichotomy toward emoting about the vriskas of your choice how you see fit.

I’m starting to really enjoy this author commentary.

Tavros being named Tavros sure was a decision. Go back and reread the commentary for panel 58 but stop before the nature/nurture thing, since they are not clones, or even the same species. They just have the same name, which, in this universe, means you at least type kind of the same.

Hmhmm.

Page 65:  Sometimes you try and come up with something to say about a page, and you cannot, and so you wait 8 hours, and go see Knives Out, and then you have 2 white russians, and then you still can’t come up with anything to say, but oh well! Commentary needs writing. Tavros is experiencing an emotion here.

Now THAT’s a mood.  I gotta go see Knives Out sometime soon.

...Alright, I can see why some people think MAAAAYBE this author might be being a little disrespectful to the audience, but if they’re going based on THIS, I don’t have a clue what they’re talking about.  This comment could have come from Andrew’s fingertips any day of the week!!!  I honestly wouldn’t WANT replacement authors who couldn’ comment like this in there for a page in paid commentary, especially in a lighter section of the story that doesn't need too much said about it.

And I paid $20 for this shit.

...Continuing, I’m loving all this commentary on Harry Anderson.  Representative excerpt:

(...I just had an internal “Wait, am I using that right, it being a “mood”?  Isn’t that the hip new term, how do I have any right to latch onto that however much I feel it?  Ohhh gosh I’m so fucking old” moment.)

It’s clear from the commentator’s complaints that the crew never viewed this commentary ALONE as worth upping the pledge to $20, but that’s... not quite a bad thing?  I think it’d have been more disrespectful to think that they COULD make the commentary worth that.  I doubt there’s a single person on their team who feels quite right about the business model (besides the artists they have plenty of context to know how deserving they are of a living goddamn wage), but it’s what they have to live with and go with, here.  I feel weird for honestly understanding ‘em, and more than slightly pitying for how many people will look at all this and read “these assholes don’t care about us”.  I really can’t think that’s anywhere CLOSE to true from this without more context.  (And I really DON’T want more context, don’t send me any.  I’ve got to read HS^2 and I’m enjoying reading it so far so let me keep enjoying it please.  Background drama details make me nauseous, DON’T give me any if there is any (which I wouldn’t know about in the first place beyond an opinionated friend or two dropping hints in a bad mood).)

Did you know there are people who I’ve seen honestly believing “Undertale is pretty good but the creator is an arrogant asshole”?????

Because they saw his tweet about the game score passing Kojima’s MGSV on metacritic briefly and misinterpreted his wide-eyed disbelief, disbelief honed to nervous laughter to maintain sanity by Toby’s insecurity about his unprofessional work and work product???  They thought he was SERIOUS without any of the context of the usual insincere little dog persona they should’ve read into the game of his they played??

Awh man.  That just ticks me off.

I don't know if you noticed, but everything is terrible right now. And I don't mean just in Homestuck's dumb fake earth. I mean in our dumb real earth.

Now that’s a mood.

I've been playing a lot of Death Stranding recently. Basically any media that you're making in 2019 has to either address what's going on around us or come off sanitized, sterilized, with its head in the sand. Kojima offers a simple power fantasy: Through Norman Reedus's sweaty, urine-filled labor, the things that divide us can be banished. America can be unified again.

Now THAT is a god damned MOOD.

The author(?) goes in about why this is happening, why Jane is being confronted this way, why she IS this way, et cetera.

Privilege, safety, and inherited wealth do funny things to the brain. People justify to themselves why they have what they have. If you have enough for long enough, you start to convince yourself you deserve it.

That’s one of the biggest goddamn reasons for the inequality and political landscape we have today IRL, yeah.

She saw a new world and chose, simply, to replicate the power structures of the 21st-century America she was raised in. Boardrooms, power pantsuits, formality and professionalism.

Jane's favorite comic, a noir-detective drama steeped in the pop-cultural trappings of pulp Americana, reflects this mindset.

So, our catgirl Seer of Light takes us through the looking glass, and we get to see an old friend.

Nothing really to say, I just had to share this fitting context the author is giving.  How things fit together even better than they seemed to, and this was all far from random.

I feel warmly ensconced in the womb of nostalgia, gently cradled on Norman Reedus's chest.

Yep, more of what we already surmised and appreciated, how Swifer and Cliper were giving us some much needed perspective... the commentary post even has little traditional-Homestuck sprites for ‘em.

And... that’s it for the commentary so far!  Again, I enjoyed all that more than I expected.  $20 doesn’t sting for me as much as it does for others in general, but it stung a lot less after I was through reading all that honestly somewhat-entertaining stuff confirming a lot of the insights I’d thought the plot was having.

I’ll probably wait to check for further commentary posts until like... after bonus updates come out, in the future, and then just blog about whatever I’m not caught up on.  Sound fair?  I’m going to blog as often as a real or bonus upd8 comes out, but I’m not going to pop in more often than that for my own sanity’s sake.  Have a good MLK weekend, y’all.  :)

No need to be sorry - you’re one of us now! Helping the community is never a bother to me or to many others here. I’m happy to be of service, if I can!

There are plenty of methods to connect with others in the community! Here, let me list seven simple ways that have helped me personally (or that I know have helped others) - even if they be but a wee bit daunting:

1. Reblog and Comment on People’s Posts

This seems elementary, doesn’t it? I assure you, this has made me more friends on this site than anything else. Your first few weeks in the Writeblr Community will likely consist of you following every writer you can find and drifting aimlessly through the writeblr tag. Here’s my advice: whenever you see a post that catches your eye, click that reblog button and leave a reply. Not in the tags, not in the comments, but on the actual reblogged post itself.

Why do this? Because there’s no downside! No one looks at someone saying “wow, this character seems cool” or “ooh, this picture is so pretty” and goes: “...imma block this jerk”. Like, no. You know what they’re gonna do? Probably cry into their keyboard, thank the heavens above that someone took the time to notice them, and leave you a lovely thank you note in response.

It still baffles me how many people are shocked that I take the time to do this. You will never know what one act of kindness can do for you or for them. And the people that leave these kinds of love notes on my posts are the ones I’m more apt to reply to, follow, and reach out to in order to form a relationship with!

Not everyone will notice you. Not everyone will thank you. Not everyone will follow you. But plenty will - and even more will be impacted by your positivity! And people like me, and those I’m close with? We know who is making a difference in this community, and we champion those people.

2. Ask to Be Included on Tag Lists for WIPs

Now, you might be wondering how in the world you’ll find posts to respond to. Valid question! The easiest way I have found to do this, other than scouring a number of tags (#writeblr, #writing, #mywriting, etc.) for hours on end, is to ask to be included in a tag list. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, this means that the author will tag/mention you in every significant post related to this story/character/etc.

This saves my life. I don’t have time to search everywhere, so finding projects to follow and having them sent to my notifications instantly, is a blessing beyond compare. From there, you might find the names of other authors to connect with who could have WIPs of their own who you could also follow! Once you find one, you can find dozens more - it’s a chain reaction.

And if you need some ideas of what to be tagged in? My recommendations for where to get started would be: The LORE/SOLE series by @incandescent-creativity, The Dawnbringer by @ardawyn, and literally everything by @lady-redshield-writes. These three update consistently, interact with the community, and are just all-around lovely people with considerable followings.

3. Send Asks and Messages to People

Look at that, you’re already halfway there with this one! Now, you just need to take off that anonymous sign. Scary, I know. But it will make all the difference in the long run!

I’ve built relationships with certain people because they would send me asks on a consistent basis (back when I had the time to run weekly ask games). When I recognized their names, it endeared me to them, and I almost always wound up following and interacting with them. Some of them are my genuine friends now! 

Until you’ve built up a fanbase of your own, you can always interact with other people’s ask games. Tags like “#oc ask”, “#ask game”, or “writeblr ask” can be great sources for finding people to interact with! And, just like with the reblogs, there’s no downside. All you need to do is submit an ask with the appropriate info and BAM! Brownie points earned. Plus, if you take two seconds to look up their WIP’s title or the name of a character (even if you don’t know much about them), it’ll help them to feel like you value them and are making an effort to know them and the work they value so much.

4. Respond to “New Writeblr/Writeblr Intro” Posts

Have you ever made an introduction post so that others from the community knew you? If not, I’m sure you can imagine that you would like others to respond to that. No one wants to walk up to someone, introduce themselves, only for a chorus of crickets to replace any chance at conversation.

The good thing with these posts in particular are that they are all made by people in the exact same position as you! Yes, you’re all scared and timid and intimidated and not sure what you’re doing yet. That’s okay! They don’t bite. All they’re hoping for is to find other people they can relate with - and frankly, you’re in a better position to fulfill that hope than even I am!

5. Participate in Tag Games

Now, this one might seem odd. Don’t you need to be tagged to be part of a tag game? You would be correct! The thing is that plenty of people leave a fun little addendum to the end of their tag lists: “and anyone else who wants to be tagged”. That’s your golden ticket, my friend!

You could then post your response to the tag game, mentioning the author who tagged “anyone else” (that’s you!), and then mentioning other names of those you’ve followed or conversed with thus far! Just be aware of people who have requested not to be tagged in games or posts, but that number seems limited around writeblr (since most things require being tagged in to keep track of).

This is a simple way to engage with other people and post snippets of or thoughts about your own work without any pressure for people to respond! Trust me, there’s nothing wrong if someone doesn’t keep the game going - life’s just busy! But they’ll see your name. And, with any luck, they’ll remember it.

6. Find a Discord Community or Writing Group

This one might be more difficult for my fellow introverts, but it’s an option that can really pay off in the long run. There are a number of writing-centric Discord groups fluttering around that house authors and artists of every shape, size and style. If you’re tackling NaNoWriMo this year, there are a ton for that as well!

If you feel like jumping into a random community would be too much for you, you’re always welcome to join mine: The Homestead! We’re very low-key, and all take life at our own pace, so there’s no expectation for consistent interaction. But I’ve seen people continually encourage and uplift one another, which is beautiful to watch.

7. Ask People You Trust to Introduce You

What better way to find other people who are safe to connect with than asking someone you trust? If you’re submitting this ask, then I hope you have at least the tiniest bit of faith in me. So, once upon a time there was a @yussuna, who gives the idea of a fanfic/drawing challengue to a crazy writer called Kanene.

Since them thing went down a downhill. 

And then this story born! Yaaaaaaaaay!!!

Okay xDD. But, seriously, this is one of the works I am most proud for, and I really, really would appreciate if you give this a shot. It is very crazy and random, I have to admit, but it has a golden heart.

“You need to stop staring me while I sleep, it’s terrifying.”

“Correction: Guard. And request denied. My system has been updated to not open a slightest infinitesimal loophole possible for you to escape.”

“Urg. You guys, ‘perfect’ guards, are SO exaggerated. - The freckled started to walk in slow steps to the kitchen, tossing his shirt to the couch, being followed by the dark as chocolate skinned, who frowned his face to the neglect with the garment lying faint in the furniture, his  impeccable posture almost undoing in disbelief as heard the other’s words.

“Pardon me, exaggerated?!”

Like a movie, they both saw the memories going by as a bittersweet trailer in their own minds: The guard enjoying the calm morning silence and the sweet aroma from the first batch of delicacies being deliciously baked in the nearest bakery in the exact sun rise, receiving greetings even from the singing birds. He felt absolutely charged. Calmly opened his eyes, submerging himself in his desire to hum as he blinked a few times, his glare being totally captured for a light movement on the window. His pupils made soft metallic sound as they  readjusted to better focus in the scene before him.

Which, for some reason, happened to be the fugitive blatantly falling out from the same, without a single hint of balance or sense of self-preservation as he lifted from the ground and started to fastly run through the yard which surrounded the house, the dolphin patterned pajamas shining with the dirt spots acquired from the garden. 

Mathias almost felt moved, even impressed, by the boldness, a feeling that deprived him from his actions for a brief pieces of moments.

Before leaving in a methodical and unbridled career after him.

“I was just practicing my morning run. I need to keep me alive until at least the next decade, preferably.”

“ You clearly was running away.”

“You have no evidence, and I just speak in presence of my lawyer.”  Opened his cupboard (his back staring the dark skinned and being a loyal confident for the police officer, who imitated him with gaudy gestures and grimaces) and placed the pan with water on the oven, his eyes meeting the other’s, who already was in his perfect position with erect back and impassive face, his hand rubbing the back of his neck as a slightly signal of embarrassment.  “Do you drink pure coffee or with milk?”

“Your devil’s advocate? And I don’t drink coffee, sir.”

“Mathias.” Completed the sentence that had already received its final point with a distracted tune, going towards the blender and filling it with water. Gave an ironic with a drop of amargure, crackle. “I’m not the devil. One of the demons, maybe. From the lowest class. The feathers from a fallen angel, to be honest.”

“ Pardon me?”

“You already live with me. - Guard. - Yeah, yeah. Guard, live, whatever. The thing is, we have been together for five months and you calling me ‘sir’ make me feel old.”  

“It’s not in my protocols to call you by your name, sir.”

“ -all powerful, Mathias.” Once again completed the finished sentence.

The guard narrowed his eyes to the grin from the other.

“I’ll keep completing all and any phrase of yours, then.” He poured the milk powder into the water, taking a full spoon just to put it in his mouth. “Chocolate milk, then?”

“I don’t have need to eat, si-” His sentence was interrupted when he noticed the sparkle in the shirtless’ look. “Matheus.”

“Mathias.”

“That was what I said, Matheus.”

This time was his round of receiving the annoyed look, sustaining its with a smile that illuminated the room and almost had his own chorus of heavens by the angelical and (false) innocent tune which he possessed.

“You’re pronouncing it wrong.” Had to blink, the smile was too shiny, even to his standards. He licked his teeth, his lips curling as he didn't break the gaze which he expected to be intimidating. “And you know it.”

“I am an, fluent in more than ten languages, android, sir Matheus. I can assure you that I know how to pronounce a name.”

Silence.

Matheu- Mathias let out a defeated sigh, shaking his head.

“You still haven't answered my question.” Started to mix the powdered coffee in the boiled water, the smell immediately spreading throughout the kitchen and the Perfect Police Officer code 128√e980 controlled his impulse to close his eyes to appreciate it deeply. “And don’t try to sell me this bullshit of ‘I’m an android and I don’t eat and nhenhenhe.’ I’ve already seen you stealing my gingerbreads in the middle of the dawn.” Still mixing the coffee as his had turned 270º degreedes to stare the the android who keep him under surveillance. - So? Chocolate Milk? Tea? Coffee?

The other thanked for his shade of skin that made difficult the perception of how much heated his facial system was; opened his mouth some centímeters, being almost possible to see the synapse powdery working in order to seek an answer on the same level of the half truth and half sincerity  teasing tune.

He didn’t find it.

“Chocolate milk.” Quiet murmur, deviated his gaze from the face which turned again to the activity being made, calmly humming.

It took some minutes drowned in silence while breakfast was being served. The police officer decided to help set the table, partly for a fact question of moral and empathy and the other part, more true, being the one which preferred ignore the dance steps, stuffed for the music that now freely flied from his lips, that Mathias risked, almost dropping plenty of times all the drinks on the floor for trusting on an equilibrium which he did not have when it came to floating.

Humans are so weird.

“Uhh. We’re out if breads… You will have to buy more.”

The law enforcement officer blinked once, twice and more three times in disbelief before facing the other. 

“Excuse me? Whose house is it?”

“Mine, but I can’t go out, remember? I’m in home prison.” Took a big sip of the not strained coffee.

“Misconception. You can move up to 100 meters from your home in order to perform activities to fulfill basic needs, as supermarketing.” 

“Oh, now I see. Do you mean that when I wanted to do my morning run to keep myself healthy and alive this rule never was mentioned, but now when it affects you, suddenly I can have rights and go roaming around?”

“Misconception. You are modificating my words in order to make me accomplish what you want.”

“Rude.”

“The bakery is next to your house.”

Mathias loudly took another sip of coffee, launching to the lively dark eyes an incisive condemnatory look. Few hair strands falling down his face.

“I am not paid for that.” The bright smile one go up, without any smile on lips, which twitched in an annoyed pout, and went grumbling to the prisoner's room to get his wallet, because he didn’t really had a payment.

“Thank you, dear. ~”

Per protocols androids didn’t swore, cursed and neither pronounce threats to any human, in life or not, regardless ofthe situation.

But that didn’t mean that they didn’t thought about it.

Mathias began to receive calls from the gang. He didn’t really gave much details about them, however he always researched a shade of pale skin more and more stronger with each of them. Sometimes the shade took too long to leave. All the numbers were from prepaid cell phones and their tracking always led to a dead end, no surprises from the biggest gang of the perimeter. They got people highly trained and infiltrated in any place. His guard work slowly and yet suddenly, metamorphosed in a protection work, which for some reason managed to calm both.

The robot who never had a name inhaled, observing his own breath being dissipated by the thick and cold drops, which plummeted from the sky in the shape of a majestic storm. It was night. A night without moon and with the only illumination stemming from light poles, automobiles headlights and his night vision. He had administered a dose of sleeping pill in Mathias’ juice, since the sleepless nights started to research a concern and definitely not healthy number. He already had studied each one of the contradictions from the product so as the long hair’s medical record, until know the right amount to use and be sure that it wouldn’t hurt him.

For this he found himself comfortable to enjoy at least for a second the sensation of freedom which he felt for being in the middle of this phenomenon. Closed his eyes and swirled in the same spot a few times, feeling with pleasure the freezing sensation took over his systems together with the wet grass aroma. The world was silent, as if even the nature shut up for a instante to appreciate its beauty.

It was… contagious, it was liberating. In the middle of the storm no one guard him, no protocols holded him, nobody weirdly stared him when he used the verb ‘feel’ and didn’t ignored him as soon they no longer needed his services.

There he was, was…

“NO!!!”

No?

Opened his eyes and three bangs, as little explosions one after another, became present. Few milliseconds after he felt himself fell, a second scream spreading through the air, cutting the calm and fullness he had been in.

Gasping. He was gasping. Weird feeling. Chest tightness. His pupils quickly focused in the form before him.

It had the green and blue colors mixed in small stripes through all his shape. It was bright. Bright enough at the point to completeky extinguish the darkness in the garden at night without satellites or stars. It was-

“MATHIAS??!”

Yes, with his long strands hair bouncing around his face, showing little fins which he had in place of ears; his pajamas hitting and vibrating strongly over his, literally, gleaming skin, whose shine seemed to spread even more with the rain that covered, yet no longer hit, them. He floated, as he always did when was distracted, however this time he seemed to have an established goal, his hand extended in an unknown energy field, apparently of protection, since in it contained two bullet projectiles, while his other hands was pressed in his shoulder which was-

“Shot! You’ve been hit!” Automatically the android connected himself in his Data Network, taking all the possibles and necessaries for the situation. His body impulsed itself, getting up and moving closer to the other, taking off his shirt and tearing it up to make a tourniquet. His gestures were quick and precise, even though his legs shook for a moment when heard the pain interjection, said in the middle of gritted teeths, from his partner. “How?” His glare was suddenly drawn to the three beings who were in attack positions, guns in hand and shining in their chests…

“Distinctives. They got hell of agents infiltrated in the police.”  He wanted to tell that his had a surprised tune, or even that he successfully attempted to hide the astonishment in his voice, but that would be a lie. Actually, this was one of his first theories he had when was arrested and, mainly, leaded to home prision. It was for this reason which in the first month he had been so wary and ignorant with the police android.

And now he got a shot for him. He, who would say?

He was sweating, damn, guns of that level din’t even caused a big amount of damage, however they hurted as if the bullet shards was tap dancing and perforating all of his nerves.

“Can’t you attack them?”

“What?!” His eyes widened, for a instant the pain on his shoulder being a little more light that the unbelieving. “I… Look, this shield is the maximum that I can do at the moment!” Talking hurt. Kneeded down and looked away, suddenly ashamed for his actual condition. “My energy is not physiologically capable to convert itself in any offensive device. Sorry, but you’re going to have to deal with the rest.”

The android’s hands shook, even though his expression remained stoic when nodded. He stared the three forms, who continued shooting bullet after bullet in synchrony. Flexed his arm and relaxed skillfully, as if he was stretching a whip, nevertheless, what actually came of his palm was copper wires, which quickly began to sizzle and snap as electric charge ran all his length. He approached to the shield protecting them, yet couldn’t see the police officers’ face.

Maybe it was for the best.

ERROR. ERROR. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED. ERROR. ERROR. RETREAD IMMEDIATELY, REPEAT: RETREAD IMMEDIATELY. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED.

He blinked, and then knew about all the effect of electricity on a human being. He knew about the electric chairs, the tortures from Medieval Era World War and nowadays, knew about the electroconvulsive therapies and the perfect voltage to incapacitate an adult human of avarage height and weight.

ERROR. ERROR. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED. ERROR. ERROR. RETREAD IMMEDIATELY, REPEAT: RETREAD IMMEDIATELY. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED.

He reached out his hand. Androids weren’t built to hurt humans. They were prohibited to do that. Each movement made feel like there was fire in his metal connections, the ‘error’ warnings beating and pulsing in each one of his systems as a series of spam, or that future appointment you would not want to be reminded right now.

He remembered the scream of pain, the sensation of freedom, the rain, the weird feeling in his chest and his work, his first case and in what it had been metamorphosed:

ERROR. ERROR. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED. ERROR. ERROR. RETREAD IMMEDIATELY, REPEAT: RETREAD IMMEDIATELY. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED.

Protect Mathias.

“Undo the barrier.” If it was on the right voltage there wouldn't be much damage. “On three, tow, one…”

ERROR. ERROR. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED. ERROR. ERROR. RETREAD IMMEDIATELY, REPEAT: RETREAD IMMEDIATELY. BASE PROTOCOL BEING VIOLATED.

“NOW!”

A hole opened itself on the shield, allowing the three conductors wires to unfold themselves and grabbed in each of the police officer’s ankles, electricity discharges flowing through his body and suffering interferences by the rain.

His head throbbing as if the discharges had being on him, which makes sense, since something needed to be the source to charge his attack. Mathias passed, weak small steps, him, analyzing the bodies on the ground.

“Wow. You hit them all at once, and still got to see that they were androids. Impressive.” The one with freckles, not that this was noticeable in the sightly darkness which returned to ravage the place when his gleam amenized, turned out, his smile in a mingle of pain and congratulations. Their gaze met and he realized in the same second:

He didn’t knew.

The robotic voice screaming the protocol in his head shutted up. His eyes were moist, his mind throbbing, shrivers of pain running up his spine and his hands trembled.

‘It must be due to the rain.’, said to himself.

“Hey, we need to go, okay?” The worried face entered in his vision field, his hand went to his not-in-his-so-perfect-pose, shoulder, and he nodded in response.

They came in the house right to the bathroom and with a tweezer the one with technologic systems removed the bullet, wrapping the wound in gauze and pronouncing a few enchantments, offered by Mathias, on the said. The agent got up and moved toward the sink, washing his hands.

“We will need to leave as soon as possible.” He pulled out a pocket knife and unsheathed the blade, observing his reflex with a inexpressive face.

“Sure. I will start to pack the most importMY GOD WHY ARE YOU CUTTING YOUR FACE?”

The police, maybe no longer, officer raised his hand, preventing the other to approached even a single small centimeter. The only eye which was seeing properly, since the cut had been  just above his left eyebrow and the liquid spreaded in a intense flow through a great part of half of his face, focused in the opened cut as he stirred with the, previously sterilized, tweezer in it. Mathias felt an unpleasant goose bump travel through his body, making his bright color became in a more opaque shade, didn’t deviating the glare only for pure concern. 

“Tracking chip. We all have it in case of any emergency. And don’t worry, my nervous system is different from yours. Quick, pack our things.”

Sure that ‘our’ wasn’t just metaphorically. Mathias grabbed two bags and put the basic first: food, first aid apparatus, a pair of shoes to each one, flashlight, prepaid cell phone (like all the great people with important secrets, he got one), towel, raincoats and money to the complete makeover they would do. After that he arranged the superficial which he knew that had its parts of essentially: The book that the agent started one of these days, his pocket videogame, a SD card with important photos and THE teddy bear (whom it belonged? Mystery.) All together he came back to the bathroom, where needed to sew the other’s corrugator supercilii, who was starting to feel a bit dizzy.

They got on the first bus they found. A travel bus, the only main reason for being so crowded. The sat in the back for both precaution and privacy, which seemed a little to much cautelous, since the two kids jumping from side to side (”I TOLD you to not give them chocolate for dinner, John!! Now what do you want me to do, huh??? Look! I just want to see when-”) waking up the cute generic newborn baby with a powerful voice in a cry that filled every inch of the automobile. None conversation would be audible even if screamed.

They dried off and ate a little, the silence, way to talk since Angelly was teaching the parrot from the sleeping man sitting on front seat to repeat the word ‘poop’, always following them.

“What you are?”

“I…” They stared each other a little before Mathias looked, seeking to choose his words. “I was a result of an experiment. I can’t remember if I was a human before all of that or if I was created there, I just know that one day I… existed. And on the others days I realized that I couldn’t take anymore tests; They wanted to see how far my power could go, from where it comes, how it could be recreated, if it could be passed on… I couldn’t stand it, almost exploded. I managed to find an escape and ran away from everything. I can easily be confused with a human when I don’t gleam, as you can see, except for some details.” The freckled lifted a lock of hair, showing the different, exotic ears. The black-skinned listened attentively, leaning against him, both because his energy that was in less than half as the loss of his resources, and feeling Mathias equally relax and snuggle in his side as well. “Yet they can be easily hidden. Anyway, I went out into the world. Never had heard about here and even less knew about how everything worked and… Well, a guy from the gang appeared and said that they were looking for people to fill some vacancies there. He said it was enough to be good with secrets and know when shut my mouth and we would almost be as a family…”

Angelly threatened the bird when it ordered her to wash her mouth with soap, and now the animal kept flying around the ceiling of the vehicle while the child menacingly tried to toss peanuts on its. The tourist guide was praying, probably to the Judgment Day happen in the next few hours.

“And everything was being alright in the beginning. But the things I saw there… It was like I was one of the scientists who tested me long ago and I couldn’t… I surrendered, the cops arrested me and the rest is the story you followed.”

 Silence. Mathias was shaking, it could be sensed his whole chest trembling. The ex-police officer adjusted himself so that he could face him.

“I am sorry. Your… entire record seemed so authentic, I would never imagine something like that could happened.”

“Oh. That it’s good. because then you would realize in the exact same time that it was a story from a movie we saw in our first month.”

…

“Excuse me. What?”

“I knew you slept, I mean, recharged during them!! Very rude of you!”

“I didn’t absorbed useless information. What are you talking about?”

“I was joking, guardian angel. I wasn’t a experiment, lol. I am a alien. I’m grounded.” And finally released the laughs that held so much in himself, literally shaking as seeing the unbelieve face from the one who accompanied him, who quickly adjusted his impeccable posture and angrily pushed him, not even noticing the existence of the new nickname.

“You’re a what?”

“An alien. Octopus Specie, I think it is easiest to your database to relate.” Snapped his fingers, his appearance immediately changing for a young adult with long red hairs, freckles, one of the eyes shiny green as half of his stripes and the other blue as the other half. “Distant planet. The humans don’t have an idea about the existence of our galaxy.” The partner didn’t said anything, what give him space to continue explaining himself. “I made some shenanigans in the past so my parents sent me to here as punishment. I can only come back when I learn my lesson.”

“What do you-” Took a deep breath, forbade himself to seek for any logic. “And what is this lesson?”

“I don’t have any idea.” Answered, the guilt in his expression being totally overshadowed by the playfulness in his smile. “I slept in this part of the lecture.”

The android took another breath and deviated his glare, by the way he closed his hand in the seat leaded Mathias ponder if he was imagining that the said object was his face. Gluped.

“So, are you stuck in the Earth until you learn a lesson which you don’t have the single idea what is about?”

“Putting like this seems a bit too exaggerated, but yes.”

“I literally just resumed what you just said and G-a-ah! - Gave up. Leaned in the back of the bus, not even looking bothered with the much his head hit the wall in each irregularity in the trails, which was a lot, that they passed by. He massaged the tip of his nose. ‘Follow orders.’ They said. ‘It is just guard him for he doesn’t run away or has contact with the gang.’ They also said. ‘It won’t be so hard.’ THEY SAID-

In truth, no one in real life had told him that, however it was what always the movies showed, so it must be true.

“Did you really thought that I was a human?” From his tune it was perceptible that he stilled trying to control his laughter, most likely because he noticed that if one more laugh escaped from his lips, his shield would not be enough to prevent the other’s fury, who probably would take his base-protocol and throw in his face. “I always thought it was pretty obvious.”

“Of course I didn’t! How would I even suspect?” Awwww. He was doing the annoyed frustrated pout. Aaaah! Look at this ashamed blush.

“Well, I literally floated? And could rotate my head 270º degrees? And eat strange things?”

“You were my first case! I didn’t had any database about the habits of Homos Sapiens Sapiens, I mean, have you seen the weird traditions they have? There are gestures that in some area is a compliment and in the other is a coursing in the same country! Not to mention the most expensive coffee of the world is made with seeds defecated by a bird! The entire humanity doesn’t make any sense!”

“I know right? I started to float because I read a book and there the character did that! I thought ‘Wow, finally something we have in common!’, I just realized that no one did that when the peoples looked at me weirdly and started to applaud!
