IM READY
hazel’s homeland is a little island nation, one amongst a lot in the little archipelago that hades rules over, and it’s not even the biggest, so it’s looked over a lot. but the weather is nice, save for the occasional hurricane, and the native people who live there live cohesively w/ some of the subjects from hades’ kingdom that est. trade and manufacturing on the island
the people that hazel comes from are known for their “mystics” and very “miracle like” religion. personally, hazel doesn’t follow the religious practices, but the magic that is passed down from priestess to priestess has been in her line of ancestors for centuries.
hazel’s people have lived on that island since before hades came to rule, so they can tell stories of the previous wars, how darkness ruled over the land and they feared that the “end of days” had come a few centuries early
but then hades and his allies managed to defeat the previous rulers of the mainlands and other regions; although the peoples didn’t really like being told “hey you’re part of my kingdom now” the lord hades treats all the native people w/ respect and didn’t attempt to take away their culture.
so the village where hazel grew up was very much traditional and kept separate from the towns built by the Mainland people. although there is trade, and diplomacy, it’s just a general “them versus us” kinda deal, so hazel doesn’t know much, if anything, about life or people from the Mainland. that’s why, when she’d ask about her father, none of the younger generation knew/wanted to talk about it, and the elders only ever told her he was a “diplomat from the kingdom”
life was great, at first. hazel’s mother was the high priestess of their town, everyone naturally deferred to her and the elder council. everything regarding the town/the people was done w/i a small group of elders and then approved by the various towns on the island and neighboring islands (bc henlo, they’re not a small population)
but then hazel’s mother took them into the remote areas of wilderness when hazel was 10 and no one saw them for almost three years. hazel returned alone, and didn’t stay long enough to tell the town what happened to her mother. she traveled to the port city, got on a boat, and sailed for the mainland to find her father
now, the magic passed down from her bloodline is mainly in healing magic, so she knows a lot of potions/salves/stuff like that and how to bless people n all that good stuff. there are things she’s learned from her mother’s old mage books, a few curses/jinxes, and some necromancy
the magic is what ostracizes her community from the Mainland bc the people there see hazel’s people as nothing more than dark witches who would like to curse everyone. so there’s a lot of tension there that will make it hard on the royal family even ON TOP of hazel being illegitimate
hazel is so young when she finally is claimed as a princess, so everything going on around her is so POLITICALLY DRIVEN that she doesn’t quite know who to trust amongst the nobles. her father obviously cares about her, her step-mother is as welcoming as possible, and she loves her new brother with all her heart. her father’s advisor, thanatos, is probably one of the only people that knows hazel’s power or knew hazel’s mother personally
MEETING JASON N THE OTHERS HOO BOY OH BOY
hazel meets percy in the streets, not knowing he’s another bastard child like herself: they both end up trying to help a merchant who was getting bullied by a snobby rich guy. only percy realizes that this guy could recognize him and has a “oh SHIT” moment n takes hazel and BOOKS IT TF OUTTA THERE. later on hazel goes w/ nico to a small banquet at the castle and LOOK WHO’S THERE THE GUY WHO RAN W/ HER IN THE MARKETPLACE. she keeps his secret and he becomes the first person outside of pluton that gains hazel’s complete trust
she’s met a few of the royals from the other kingdoms, and doesn’t really have an opinion of them. her tutor, lady hecate, and thanatos are the main ones who introduce her to other royals and heirs, ladies and lords. but it’s really nico who tells her “this one and this one are okay for the most part, but these guys are kinda assholes, don’t interact”
MEETING JASON IM BOUTTA
kinda???? similar to percy in that she doesn’t know jason is a royal child when she meets him in zeus’ kingdom--specifically the stables. she was waiting for her brother to show up and sees this older guy practicing his w/ his sword and automatically she’s like “!!!!!!” and tuns over to check it out. jason probably spots her and is like “.....are you lost, miss?” n hazel doesn’t really know how to act bc she doesn’t think he knows her n she obv doesn’t know him so
they hit it off talking about swordplay (of which hazel is particularly good at despite her small size) and talk about horses for a while. jason’s impressed w/ her skills and thinks she’s absolutely adorable and a lovely person, although he thinks she’s the kid of a visiting nobleman/merchant. he has to leave before nico gets there, so he doesn’t really KNOW who she is until a while later n he just “!!!!!!!!”
immediate adoption of the other “bastard child” bc she’s too damn young and sweet to deal w/ the shit he also went through, n also bc of her background that makes it harder for the royals to accept her is so!!!! fucking unfair!!!!! whenever he gets the chance, on any visit, he makes sure to seek hazel out and spend time w/ her, walk around the markets, go on horse rides, things like that. makes it VERY OBVIOUS that she’s a favorite of his, so everybody better BACK TF OFF >:(
ummmmm in general, i think hazel rises even quicker than jason did in a diplomatic sense as she’s very good at arguing/debating and can change people’s perspectives easier than others (she does have mental manipulation magic, but that’s not always the reason people change their minds). jason admires the strength and conviction hazel has, always has a guiding hand and supportive position behind her should she ever need it. both jason n percy are always willing to vouch for her whenever there are meetings regarding the kingdoms.
her powers grow over time and she’s able to control them better. again, most of it surrounds the earth and anture, since she has a great affinity for healing and similar magic. due to her people’s religion, hazel is also a skilled necromancer, she knows how to scry, and has a large arsenal of “dark magic” although hazel calls it “offensive/defensive magic”. thanks to her tutor, lady hecate, hazel can also manipulate the opinions/perspectives of others, which she only really uses in extreme situations that involve wars, life and death type stuff.
