The solicits for August 2017 Marvel comics have finally been released – the start of “Marvel Legacy” – and I think it is now fair to ask if Marvel actually hears or heard any of the criticism of their line over the last few months.
People have complained about (among other things) the lack of “the real” Marvel characters, about over-expansion watering down the line, about tired creative teams who should be replaced, and about a reliance on gimmicks over substance. And, based purely on the solicitations, Marvel does not immediately appear to have taken virtually any of these points to heart.
Let’s take those more or less in order, starting with “the real” Marvel characters. Now I, for one, find this particular complaint pretty drastically overblown: despite the new consensus of the internet, I would argue to you that characters like Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and “original Thor” are actually really uninteresting characters who have, largely, outstayed their welcome – there’s a reason that these characters keep getting replaced with new versions again and again and again: unless you’re exclusively mining nostalgia, it’s hard to keep these characters fresh and relevant at all. Watch and see: after they come back, some creator will be trying to replace them again within five years. It happens every time.
If anything, I think Marvel’s actual mistake was having all of those characters off-stage at the same time – you look around the “Marvel Universe” and you recognize almost none of the characters… well, that’s jarring. But it isn’t true that the OG versions are inherently fascinating enough to freeze them in amber, in my considered opinon.
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Either way, that was what people are saying that they wanted: “the real” versions back. But reading these solicits, it doesn’t appear that any of the characters are back in these “Legacy” renumbered comics – yes, it looks like they’re setting up stories where they will come back eventually, but they’re not back here at the time of the actual repositioning itself. Here’s the text for, say, Invincible Iron Man #593: “THE SEARCH FOR TONY STARK Part 1 Tony Stark has vanished! The mystery deepens as Stark friends and foes must decide, finally, who will wield the power of Iron Man! All the contenders are in position, and all the armor is polished. There can only be one Armored Avenger! The path to the most startling Iron Man story ever begins here!”
This would appear to be clearly saying that while Tony is coming back, he isn’t in this comic book. I’m going to assume he’s going to show up again probably just in time for “issue #600”, because: comics. But what’s the reason for a reader who has decided he doesn’t like the current direction of “Iron Man” to jump on here at this “jump on” point? Not only is the comic seemingly not giving them what they asked for, it’s doing so under the exact same creative stewardship that has already driven them away from the book.
Think that is strong words? Well, here’s “Iron Man”’s sales arc over the last while (thank you Xavier Lancel for making the chart, and ICv2 for the numbers)
06/14 Iron Man v6 #28 – 28,027 ( -0.9%)
…

05/16 Invincible Iron Man #9 – 49,334 (+6.0%) (CV2)
06/16 Invincible Iron Man #10- 49,141 (- 0.4%) (CV2)
07/16 Invincible Iron Man #11- 49,439 (+0.6%) (CV2)
08/16 Invincible Iron Man #12- 50,571 (+2.3%) (CV2)
09/16 Invincible Iron Man #13- 48,394 (- 4.3%) (CV2)
10/16 Invincible Iron Man #14- 43,888 (- 9.3%) (CV2)
11/16 Invincible Iron Man # 1- 97,713
12/16 Invincible Iron Man # 2- 81,271 (-16.8%)
01/17 Invincible Iron Man # 3- 44,184 (-45.7%)
02/17 Invincible Iron Man #4- 36,600 (-17.2%)
03/17 Invincible Iron Man #5- 38,746 (+ 5.9%)
04/17 Invincible Iron Man #6- 31,561 (-18.5%)
05/17 Invincible Iron Man #7- 28,266 (-10.4%)
Those numbers look awful, the book is cratering and the audience isn’t interested in it, delivering some of the lowest “Iron Man” sales of all time – so why is this specific “legacy” iteration going to be any different?
It isn’t just “Iron Man”, of course – of the twenty-nine “Marvel Legacy” comics on the August order form, only two are entirely “new” series (“Falcon” and “Spirits of Vengeance”), and of those remaining twenty-seven, only a single one has a different writer in place (“Cable”, replacing James Robinson with Ed Brisson… in a move that seems like it was going to happen with or without “Legacy”) than it did two months before. And virtually every one of those comics has a similar sales trajectory.
Keeping the creative teams the same seems… well, strange to me. Marvel has reached a point with its publishing program that it has chased enough readers away that the don’t have a single ongoing Marvel Superhero comic that is not a first issue in the month of June that even sold 60,000 copies. If you told Jim Shooter or Tom DeFalco that, I suspect they might laugh in your face (books that sold under 100k back then got the axe!)
So, if you’re flopping on that level, why on earth would you stick with exactly the same creators in exactly the same iteration of titles? I’m not saying “get rid of X!”, but at least change up who is doing what book to bring some fresh energy in.
Here’s your kicker, for all of these new “Legacy” books, Marvel has set a target number of sales that it expects – and also that gates things like certain variant covers – and Iron Man’s reads like this: “Meet or exceed 225% of orders for Invincible Iron Man #7 [MAR171004] with orders for Invincible Iron Man #593 regular cover” Two hundred and twenty five percent, oy!
Now to be fair, Marvel does often downgrade such ambitious targets in the face of retailer incredulousness, and there are some indications that something is going to happen with these targets as well, but in all official documentation available to me today Marvel is claiming that we should more than double our orders for something that essentially the exact same product as it was the month before. The current lowest percentage for any of the “Legacy” books is 125%. The highest is 250%.
What does meeting that gate get you? Well, again, this is only for now, because Marvel has this nasty nasty habit of changing and adding permutations as we get closer to “Final Order Cutoff” (which sucks because that means as a retailer you have to do your math and calculations multiple times unless you don’t place “initial orders” [which can carry its own consequences, see below]) – but currently if you meet that gate, then you’ll be allowed to order 1) “INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #593 DAVIS LH VAR LEG” (which despite lack of that word in the actual product name is the “Lenticular Homage” Variant) 2) “INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #593 ZDARSKY HOW TO DRAW VAR LEG”, and if you “only” match 200% of your orders, then you get blessed to be able to order 3) “INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #593 TRADING CARD VAR LEG”. This doesn’t include the 1:10 and 1:50 covers. Three of these five covers don’t even yet have art for which a retailer can base a decision upon, either!
But, in short if you don’t order 225% of a previous issue of “Iron Man”, then you are not allowed to order any copies of those two variants. None at all.
Now the Lenticular covers are fairly new – in fact, originally the announced plan was to simply have a “Homage” variant for each “Legacy” book. The one for IM #593 is a call-back to IM volume 1 #150. These covers were originally announced as not being lenticular at all, and, oddly, the lenticular is a replacement and not an addition – there’s no longer a non-lenticular edition of any of them.
But the thing is: Lenticular covers (like those on DC books like the whole “Villains Month” stunt a few years back, or more recently on “The Button” storyline) are very popular with customers, to the point where it is my experience that if the lenticular is available, the vast majority of customers prefer the “fancy” one. And in the case of the Marvel “Legacy” covers, this should be even greater because the Lenticular has the same cover price as the regular edition. From a particular POV, the “regular” cover is now far far less desirable as a result.
But again, you can’t order any copies of the lenticular of “Iron Man” if you don’t order 225% of the regular one. Another problem: this kind of line-wide stunt really becomes an “all-in, or stay out” kind of program – it simply isn’t rational to think you can carry a few of the lenticular covers, but not all of them. That’s not how audience response works. If you buy-in, you have to buy-in across the board.
You’re not even a comic book retailer, and you see the conundrum, right? If you get 225% of the one you can order the other, more desirable version, but then you lose pretty much any demand for the “regular” edition in the first place, even if you can sell 300% or more of the fancy version. Literally, you are being asked to purchase comics you can’t sell, in order to gain access to comics that you can. While a small handful of people are willing or able to buy multiple copies of the same insides, the largest majority of customers just want a single version to buy.
That’s madness.
Compounding this situation, Marvel has also announced that you can not receive your regular discount on the Lenticular edition – a massive break from decades of business. Instead, your discount is capped at 50%, removing up to nine percentage points of margin from their largest accounts. That doesn’t necessarily sound like much to the lay person, but please let me assure you that those points of margin are where the actual profit (if any!) of selling comics comes from.
And let’s compound it again: Marvel is also saying that it can only guarantee orders for those covers that are placed by the Initial Order deadline of August 24 (again, these are books shipping in October) – anything placed after that date, even if it is before “Final Order Cutoff” dates in September runs the risk of being allocated. This gives very little time to figure out what you need, and, in fact, runs entirely contrary to how a significant number of retailers now do business.
When you add these things together, it’s very hard to see how a store can stock the lenticular covers in a way that is profitable, unless their intention is to mark them way up for the aftermarket. In fact, that becomes almost a self-reinforcing principle since it seems clear to me that a significant number of stores in any given market are going to opt out of stocking the lenticulars at all because of the low chance at making a profit in a non-mercenary way. This, in turn, increases the demand at the places that do have them, and nearly guarantees that these comics will be speculator-bait and chum for a frenzy as a result. At least one prominent retailer has already openly embraced such a plan, gleefully saying that he intends to sell these for double cover price to all of the customers the less ethically-challenged amongst will be turning away.
And it’s not like he doesn’t have a point – there’s a clear opportunity to profit here that becomes inherently self-reinforcing.
The question for me always becomes: what is the publisher trying to accomplish? Marvel clearly knows, has known, and probably always will know how to sell a speculator-bait launch or first issue. Look back at that “Iron Man” chart – almost two hundred and eighty thousand copies of that first issue in 2015 on the market for a book that clearly had a long-term audience of less than a quarter of that. That’s all from variants – it had a 1:15, three different 1:25 variants, and what looks like no less than four different “beat this threshold to order any” covers (it was 160% of “Old Man Logan” #1 back then) There was also a one-per-store “party” variant, and a number of store-exclusive covers as well.
So they know how to sell a first issue – and these lenticular are going to sell to the national market like a house on fire because they are speculator-bait – but how do they sell a fourth issue? Marvel kind of sucks at that.
For “Legacy” to be a success (a success that the market needs right now!), Marvel needs their lapsed readers to come back. And the problem that I see is that selling the flash and sizzle as the main selling point is sure to induce a speculator frenzy, but will do very little to bring back the lapsed. We’ve played this song before. Played it to death, and the audience doesn’t want to hear it any more.
But again: who is Marvel trying to attract? If it is speculators, they’re set. But if it is the lapsed reader, creating a speculative product that the market doesn’t have easy and equal easy and simple access to seems like entirely 100% the wrong tack to take.
It seems to me that all the talk of a new direction with “Marvel Legacy” is actually yielding very little change at all – in fact, most of the comics that are going to the same comic they were going to be before this rebranding effort was pitched. Sure, there might be certain storylines that have been pushed back or forward as a result, but there’s not the level of wholesale change that the audience appears to be demanding.
Right now “fancy” covers are trying to cover a multitude of underlying problems with the actual core product. This is not the first time such a thing has been tried, and I wish I can remember who it was, but I remember talking to a retailer who told me they had built a literal chair out of the leftover copies of “Adventures of Superman #500” they had; with similar stories about just how many unsold and unsalable copies of “Turok” #1 were left over. Those who don’t know their history are doomed to repeat it, and while I’m hopefully we’ve wised up as a class to not fall down that same rabbit hole again, when I see Marvel’s August plans, added to DC’s August books with foil covers (three), Lenticulars (two) and even a glow-in-the-dark cover I think “Damn, we’re there again, where greed and glitz has overwhelmed common sense”
That time of the crash and the few years after it was dire for comics, and this time is likely to be significantly worse, as we don’t have a core of books selling at 100k or more to keep things propped up.
I think it will be great for them if Marvel sells a bunch of dollars of comics in October thanks to manipulative processes designed to get the greedy moving – but it won’t mean a damn thing if come January “Iron Man” is back to selling under 40k again because speculator bait never ever has led to stable long-term growing sales.
Until Marvel is willing to think about the long-term steps needed to right their ship they’re going to remain in danger of collapsing the entire market; and there is literally nothing they’ve shown us from “Marvel Legacy” so far that doesn’t literally feel like rearranging the deck chair on the Titanic.
I hope to god I’m wrong; otherwise 2018 is going to suck.

Tilting at Windmills #261: Marvel Comics and The Deck Chairs of the Titanic By Brian Hibbs The solicits for August 2017 Marvel comics have finally been released – the start of “Marvel Legacy” – and I think it is now fair to ask if Marvel actually hears or heard any of the criticism of their line over the last few months.

Pop Culture Conventions are still pretty new to me. In my 4 years as a published author I’ve been to exactly 4 of them, though technically you could say that I’ve been to the same one four times because I’ve only ever tried representing myself at the Sugar City Con right here in Mackay.
My first convention was all about having fun and learning 🙂
Obviously I’d love to go to an actual writing convention because I’d be more likely to find my target audience, but the SCC is still a very new thing here in Mackay and I am still very much an ingenue when it comes to the publishing world, so this is definitely one of those “Think globally, act locally,” events for me.
I’m glad to say that I’ve been with the SCC since their inception back in 2014, and I am very thrilled to say that I’ve learned a lot in those four years- perhaps even enough to warrant me passing my advice along becuase I myself have been frustrated when it comes to researching how best to navigate these events, especially as an author.
My first ever Convention set-up. Not very attention grabbing, is it? It looks like the booth of a beauty sales consultant.
The start of my convention evolution was a little bit embarrassing. I’d only been self-published for just over a year and all I had to offer potential readers was links to e-books and some brochures, which I tried hawking over a plastic-coated foldable table. I managed to raffle off a Kindle E-Reader that first year which at least gave some people a reason to come hang near my booth and jot down their e-mail addresses for me, but I’m not very good with being the pushy sales chick and I never actually used those e-mail addresses for anything so in the end, the most I got out of that event was a teeny tiny bit of promotion.
Second year’s booth- hit the ground running 🙂
My second year was a little bit better. By then I had one book in paperback and I ordered in a lot of copies, in addition to getting business cards and better brochures, and I went to a lot more trouble with my booth. I made fancy decorations out of old books, had posters printed up to blow up my various book covers so that they could be pinned to my backing panel behind me, and actually took along my computer so I’d have something to do other than sit and stare at the people passing me by. That was a much better year, but the entire event was a lot bigger and better in general so it was pretty hard to steal attention away from the other vendors. I sold a lot of copies of my novels, but I chose my solitary YA title to print (because it was the smallest) and that definitely limited my reach because I am first and foremost an adult paranormal fantasy writer. I also printed out lots of samples of my other books and had a demo of a second novel ready to place orders for, which did generate a lot of sales. I was learning but I was learning too slowly and I knew that I needed to plan well in advance the following year if I was going to have a hope of getting my name and my work truly out there.
I’m still very proud of these home made decorations
This was how I packaged the ordered copies when they came in. Sah cute, yeah?
Next came 2016, which was definitely my best year. The convention had grown into its larger venue and the crowd was twice the size of the year before thanks to the fact that we had some fantastically talented people front up for the SCC, including a well-known actor and an incredibly talented young writer, Will Kostakis. I was asked to appear on a panel that year, along with Will Kostakis and another local author, Sharon Johnston to talk about how we got into writing- Will being the award-winner, Sharon the one that had official representation and me- the poor man’s Indie. That was lot of fun and a great experience, and although I don’t know if that got a lot more people heading my way, it certainly attracted the attention of one or two. I was much better prepared that year- I’d just produced my first original play so I spliced footage from that with my book trailers and played it on repeat on my computer so I had better visual aids, and by then I had 4 different paperbacks to sell and I happily almost sold out. I’d upgraded my brochures yet again, added in some book marks and printed out 18 posters while running a free promotion for several of my other novels on Kindle at the same time, so if there was anything that anyone wanted to read, they had the option of buying it then and there in paperback, or downloading it free.
Me with star guest Tony Amendola 2017
Me on the writer’s panel with Sharon Johsnton and Will Kostakis
My 2017 booth- simple with lots of titles for sale!
Yes 2016 was definitly a successful year but like I said, the SCC was growing so by then there were 6 other writers present, so it was a good thing that I’d gone in prepared because it was much harder to stand out in that sea of faces.
I’ve just done my 4th SCC and although it probably should have been my best year yet, I found that it was pretty hard to top 2016. Not only because an economic downturn led to the event being down-sized in general, but because I didn’t actually make the decision to attend until 2 weeks before so I was grossly underprepared. I ended up having to order books at the last minute in bulk from Create Space which means the postage for each book cost as much as the titles themselves (and literally arrived the afternoon beforehand!), and I didn’t think of anything new to do with my booth so it was a lot simpler than it had been before. In fact, the highlight of this event for me was the fact that I finally got into the Cosplay spirit!
There were no other authors this year, but I didn’t rate that as being an advantage because it meant that the people that came were mostly drawn in by all of the sci-fi and cosplay stuff. I sold quite a lot of books still and managed to generate some great publicity for my upcoming shows and a collection of local ghost stories that I’m writing, but I definitely wish that I’d been better prepared and had had something new to offer people. That’s definitely the issue with being a small-town writer; if you don’t keep evolving, you go stale.
So here are my personal tips and tricks for representing yourself as an author at a convention- especially if you’re not attending an author-only convention and are competing with the special guest artists and cosplayers that the atendees are lining up for:
Go to some effort with your booth. You’ll likely be supplied with one table, one chair and a backing panel just like everyone else, so be prepared to make it all it can be. Table covers, covers for backing panels, posters, props- make the space look eye-catching. Please try to theme it or keep the colours simple though, because people do judge books- and authors- by their covers.
Find out if you have power and use it accordingly. I definitely wish I’d upgraded my PC display this year because I’ve found that it gives potential customers the chance to drift your way without being forced to have to look or speak to you if they don’t want to. All of the vendors are selling something and selling hard, and most atendees will do their best to maintain a safe distance between themselves and the desperate sales person eyeballing them until they’re as interested as you’d like them to be. A lot of people would advise you to call out to each one or do the ‘hard sell’ but I wouldn’t recommend it. When it comes to books someone is either a reader or they’re not, and readers know what they like to read. If your cover doesn’t hook them, then trying to talk them into it will scare them off more quickly. In fact whenever anyone drifts my way and starts eyeing my book covers I always test the waters first by saying: ‘Are you a reader?’ If the answer is no, then I know to tread carefully and offer them a pretty book mark. If the answer is yes, I ask them what genre they like. If it’s not something I write, I’ll talk to them about what they’re interested in instead and let them decide if they want to know more about me. Once again, I’m not going to waste my time or anyone else’s trying to convince a hard-core fantasy reader to buy a book about zombies.
Keep yourself occupied without actually going too far and making yourself look unapproachable. I take notebooks to doodle in because I can get a lot done without shutting myself off or getting overly distracted by technology.
Have things to sell or give away- I cannot stress this enough. Running a bunch of free books on Kindle might seem like a great idea, but a lot of people won’t go to the trouble of looking you up once they get home if left to their own devices. And be prepared to sell too: have a lot of copies on hand, change, bags, bookmarks and I would highly reccommend that you have one of those personal eftpos machines or at least have your internet banking details, a means to connect to the internet and an invoice book on hand. This year the thing that handicapped me the most was the money thing: the venue had one ATM that died in the first hour, leaving people with only the cash they had and their ATM cards. I’d learned from 2015 to get a portable card reader so I had that as back up but unfortunately, the signal on my phone was too weak to hook the thing up with the app and so I lost a lot of sales that way, as did all of the vendors. Next year when I go back I’ll take a portable wi-fi device to be safe.
Have something to give away to keep you in people’s minds, but if you can’t afford to go big, don’t. Giving away a Kindle loaded with my books was a great idea, but that only really appealed to e-book readers and in a town like mine, that cuts out 70% of your potential customers. Giving away an iPad is expensive and not likely to pay off for you because everyone will enter into that, so you could waste your time trying to hook the attention of people that want the iPad so they can use Instagram, not so they can read off it. If money is no option then by all mens, raffle off an elephant if you’re so inclined, but I’ve discovered that personalised bookmarks are the best way to go. They’re cheap, they’re relevant to the sutomers you want to make a connection with and a lot less likely to be thrown out than a glossy brochure will be.
Link your social media to your event- run competitions using your pen name as a hashtag and get yourself some authentic likes. This year I did a few things- I used my booth to take ticket bookings for my next play, offered a special discount off my next book for people that pre-ordered it before midnight, and tied my appearance at the Con to a cover reveal for my next book online. Just be careful to walk that fine line between self-promotion and spamming, whatever you do.
And last but not least, get into the spirit of things! Pop culture conventions are all about the cosplay, so find something to wear that’ll make it clear that you’re there not only as a vendor but as a fan of the experience in general. I’ve heard some authors say that they rate dressing up as a character from their own books, but mine aren’t really distinctive enough for that yet, so I decided to dress as Ariel, given that I have three books out about mermaids. It meant that I had to get up a lot earlier and was a lot less comfortable than I had been the prior years, but it was a lot of fun!
So here I am, hoping that 2018 is gonna be the year that I get it right, so if you have any tips for me, please share away!
To convention or not to convention? That is the question. Pop Culture Conventions are still pretty new to me. In my 4 years as a published author I've been to exactly 4 of them, though technically you could say that I've been to the same one four times because I've only ever tried representing myself at the Sugar City Con right here in Mackay.

How to Get Products to Review on Your Blog
The post How to Get Products to Review on Your Blog appeared first on ProBlogger.
This post is based on Episode 178 of the ProBlogger podcast.
Whether your blog is all about reviewing products or you want to review them occasionally, it’s not always easy to get your hands on them.
I faced this problem in my early blogging days when I ran a camera review blog.
Back then I used seven strategies to get products to review. Some might seem fairly obvious, but others may well be things you haven’t considered.
I’ll come onto those in a moment. But first, let’s take a look at why you might want to write reviews.
Why it’s a Great Idea to Write Reviews on Your Blog
I started my camera review blog by accident when I posted a 300-word review of a camera I was using. I didn’t expect much from that particular post. But I quickly learned that reviews are fantastic.
People search for reviews to get advice on purchases they’re making. People find them useful – they’re grateful for them. I used to get emails from people saying, “Thank you for the review you wrote on this particular camera”. And those people often became long-term readers.
Of course, reviews can also be monetised if you use affiliate links. (And affiliate links in a review tend to convert quite well.)
Reviews are also great for getting conversations going. When you put your opinion of a product out there, other people respond – either to agree with you or to offer a different opinion.
So how do you actually get products to review? This can be a challenge when you’re just starting out, especially if you want to do a lot of reviews.
#1: Start With What You Already Have
I know this is obvious, but begin with the products or resources you’ve already purchased for yourself.
My first review was of my first (and at the time only) digital camera. After that, whenever I bought a new piece of gear I’d review it – a lens, a flash, an SD card, a memory card or something else.
#2: Borrow Products from Friends or Contacts
In those early days, any time a friend bought a new camera I’d ask if I could borrow it for a day or two.
It was amazing how many people not only agreed, but also started coming to me with their new gear because the word got out I was reviewing. Friends wanted to put their new piece of equipment in my hands so I could review it. They were interested in my opinion.
I was also part of a photography club, which opened up all sorts of possibilities for camera and gear to review. Could you join something similar for your own niche?
#3: Try Stores or Rental Places
When I was reviewing cameras back in 2004 and 2005 , manufacturers would send them out only to journalists – not bloggers.
So I asked myself, “Who has the cameras I want to review?” An obvious place was camera stores. I’d go in, introduce myself, and ask if I could borrow a camera to review in return for helping them build their online profile.
A lot of stores were really interested (and I suspect even more would be today). Lots of them let me take cameras away and review them, keeping my driver’s license or some other form of ID.
In my review, I’d link to them and write something like, “This camera was provided by Michael’s Camera Store, which is a Melbourn camera store.”
Who has the type of thing you want to review? It might be a store, or even a rental place. Later on we found a camera rental company that was willing to send cameras to us to review in return for a link on our blog.
#4: Pitch the Manufacturer or Distributor of the Product
Even if you don’t think you’ve got a big profile, you might be surprised how many manufacturers have review units they’ll happily lend you providing your audience is on topic for them.
Try going to trade shows or similar. In Australia, I went to trade shows for the photographic industry and meet the manufacturers or distributors. That was another way we were lent cameras to review.
When you pitch manufacturers, don’t just talk about how many readers you have. Talk about the type of readers you have. A targeted audience can be much more valuable than a big one.
#5: Consider Buying or Renting the Product You Want to Review
Because photography gear is expensive, I only bought products outright a few times. I did it with items that were coming out that:
I knew would be really popular
I was fairly confident I could make enough from the affiliate links to cover the purchase.
The option I used more often was to rent a camera for a week from a rental company. While there was still some cost involved, I could make that money back from the affiliate links.
#6: Ask Someone Else to Write a Review For You
I often emailed other bloggers to say, “Hey, I notice you’re using this particular camera. Would you mind writing 500 words on what you think about it?”
It’s amazing how many bloggers were willing to do that in exchange for some exposure.
A couple of times, friends who were hesitant to lend me their camera (see #2) offered to write a review from their own perspective.
I also found a journalist who wrote short reviews of cameras in a weekly supplement in one of our newspapers. He was happy to write two versions of each review and send us one to publish on our blog.
We also had some camera stores and rental companies write reviews for us.
Some people won’t want to write a post for you, but be more than willing to talk to you. For instance, one car blogger I knew had a blog about exotic cards. It was hard for him to get manufacturers to lend him cars to review. So he’d find people who already owned those cars, take his camera out and interview them in person.
#7: Aggregate Other People’s Reviews
I also looked at reviews other people were writing and aggregate some of them. I’d quote from their articles and link to them from my site.
I’d write a post called something like “The Canon Powershot A60: Reviews”. Then I’d list the key features, include a picture from the manufacturer of the camera, and write my thoughts about the features (who the camera might suit, what features might be missing, etc.)
Underneath that, I’d quote other reviewers. I only took one or two sentences from their review, and made it very clear it was a quote. I’d also link to the source of the quote.
Normally, I’d use two or three reviews of the camera and sum up the post with my own thoughts, picking up some of the themes of those reviews.
These days, you could also embed reviews from YouTube, which wasn’t an option back in 2005. For practically any product you can think of there’s a review on YouTube. And the creators are happy for you to embed their video on your site because it gives them more views and raises their profile.
Here’s a recap of the seven things you can try:
#1: Review the stuff you already own #2: Review stuff you can borrow from your friends or network #3: Look for places that will let you borrow the products you want to review #4: Pitch the manufacturers and distributors #5: Buy the product yourself #6: Ask other people to write reviews for you (or interview them) #7: Aggregate what other people are doing
If you’d like some help with actually writing the review itself, check out episode 140 of the ProBlogger podcast: How to Create a Review Post.
I’d love to hear your own thoughts on this, whether you write reviews regularly or just occasionally. How do you get products to review? What types of products do you focus on? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Who Needs Jobs?; Uber Eats $3 Billion Loss; Roku’s Still Boss
Who Needs Jobs?; Uber Eats $3 Billion Loss; Roku’s Still Boss:
Friday Four Play: The ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Edition
It’s official. The U.S. economy is in tatters … and Wall Street doesn’t seem to mind.
According to the Labor Department, the U.S. lost a record 20.5 million jobs in April. That’s roughly 25 times more lost jobs than in the worst month of the 2008 financial crisis.
Furthermore, the unemployment rate skyrocketed to 14.7% — the highest such reading since the Great Depression.
In short, the U.S. economy went from the lowest unemployment rate in 50 years to the worst in 50 years … in less than two months.
And what about that grand discussion that CNBC’s Jim Cramer said we would have today?
You know, how the report would be so bad that we’d debate “whether we’re in a serious recession or a depression?”
Yeah … that discussion ain’t happening, at least on Wall Street.
The market rallied in the face of today’s horrific jobs data. I think we can officially throw out any notion that Wall Street is in any way tied to the economy.
Great Stuff’s advice remains the same despite the market’s insanity: Hold gold, hold bonds and hold currencies with the majority of your investment capital.
After that, use what you can afford to lose to speculate on this insane market rally. There are opportunities to be had, but the market is in unprecedented territory right now. It’s a house of cards built on unfounded optimism that could tumble down at any moment.
However, you still have time to come out of this mess stronger than before. Experts like Matt Badiali have helped people just like you navigate irrational times and bear markets alike.
Click here to learn what he recommends you do before all else.
You have been warned.
And now for something completely different … here’s your Friday Four Play:
No. 1: Overreaction Opportunity
Roku Inc. (Nasdaq: ROKU) is up more than 40% since Great Stuff first recommended the shares roughly a year ago. Compared to the rest of the market, that’s a big win. But, if you missed the boat last year, don’t worry … the market has handed you an opportunity today!
Last night, Roku reported revenue and earnings that beat Wall Street’s expectations. The number of new Roku accounts surged 70% year over year, and streaming hours rose 48%. The company now sports nearly 40 million active accounts.
Looking ahead, Roku said it expects to report “substantial” ad revenue growth for fiscal 2020. However, the company warned that it saw “higher-than-normal cancellations as overall advertising budgets have declined.”
Mr. Wall Street decided to focus on that tidbit of info to send ROKU plummeting, giving you an opportunity for profit.
You see, ad companies are having trouble adjusting to the new cord cutting paradigm. They’re used to spending on traditional TV ads, and they’re pulling back ads without major blockbuster events, such as the NCAA tournament.
Once ad agencies realize their audience has migrated to streaming, ROKU will be front and center for their ad dollars. To put it another way, print media advertising went through a similar ordeal back in 2008. That ad money moved online as newspapers and magazines were finally pushed out in favor of online publications.
ROKU is doing the same thing to traditional TV, and it will pay off big for investors. So, if you haven’t taken a look at buying in (or adding to your stake) over the past year, today’s as good a time as any to shoot your shot.
No. 2: Uber Eats a $3 Billion Loss
OK, so it wasn’t exactly $3 billion. It was more like $2.9 billion, but potato, potahto … you get the point.
Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) had more than a few “sins” to get off its chest in the earnings confessional last night.
The first was that $2.9 billion loss, which breaks down into $1.70 per share on an adjusted basis. It more than doubled Wall Street’s expected loss of $0.84 per share.
The next sin was that revenue came up $30 million short of the consensus estimate. Finally, gross bookings fell 5% at Uber’s ride-sharing unit, coming in below expectations at $10.87 billion.
So why did Uber stock rally today? Because of Uber Eats. The food delivery unit saw revenue surge 52% to $4.68 billion, beating analysts’ targets. Additionally, investors were keen on Uber’s cost-cutting measures, which include job cuts.
“We will not shy away from making short-term financial sacrifices where we see clear long-term benefits,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. (Say his name three times fast, I dare you.)
Wait a minute … where have I heard this before? Ah, right: This line has been one of Dara’s faves, word for word, ever since Uber first went public.

No. 3: Cloud City Rich
For the longest time, Box Inc. (NYSE: BOX) and Dropbox Inc. (Nasdaq: DBX) were the two reigning cloud-storage kings. Typically, office workers and freelancers alike rely on Box and Dropbox to access work files easily from at home, the office or — bad habit alert — on vacation.
With the stay-at-home market, remote workers can now conveniently access all their data and projects from the living room, the kitchen, the shed out back … my, this truly is the work-from-anywhere revolution.
So, Mr. Worldwide, what’s up with Dropbox?
Today, Dropbox dropped, while Box barely dropped. Dropbox’s drop shows us that, even when you outbox Box, you can still get boxed in.
Dropbox posted its first ever quarterly profit. Earnings came in at $0.17 per share, beating analysts’ consensus estimate for $0.14 per share. The company brought in $455 million for the quarter, just squeezing by the projection for $452.2 million.
Better still, it still expects to turn a profit for the full year!
And what does Dropbox get for its dashing results? A 2% aftermarket rally that today’s trading almost immediately erased.
So what gives?
Dropbox even provided second-quarter guidance at a time when guidance is rare. The thing is, it didn’t meet Wall Street’s wishful thinking projections.
CEO Drew Houston still gave some much-needed optimism, though: “Certainly, a huge percentage of the world is being forced into a remote work state for the first time, but I think the effects of it will persist well beyond when we typically go back into the office.”
No. 4: Glasses Meet Camera
Now, with a mixed medley of earnings messes behind us, let’s have a quick tech talk.
Vuzix Corp. (Nasdaq: VUZI) is augmenting reality where reality was never augmented before.
Think of the geeky-looking privacy disaster that Google’s smart glasses turned out to be. But, instead of the bright scrolling news feed an inch from your eye (that no one asked for), Vuzix’s M400 Smart Glasses have joined the COVID-19 fight’s many front lines.
This week, news came out that health care workers can now use a version of Zoom specific for “telemedicine videoconferencing.” And here I thought the Jetsons had futuristic tech!
Even better, doctors and hospital workers are also using Vuzix’s glasses at Johns Hopkins Hospital’s intensive care ward to remotely carry out their rounds for quarantined COVID-19 patients. Doctors also said the glasses would help out with training and other hands-free patient monitoring.
VUZI shares are up big … relatively that is. Today’s 19% surge puts VUZI roughly 188% above its mid-March lows. You want to talk pre-crash levels? Psshh … before today, VUZI shares hadn’t traded past the $3 mark since the balmy days of July 2019.
And if you’ve never heard of Vuxiz before, I don’t blame you. Heck, Ian Dyer is the only other Banyan Hill analyst who I’ve seen cover the stock.
Vuzix is far from a household name, and it’s tiny. (How tiny is it?!) Today’s surge put the company’s entire market cap at just over $85 million.
A Great Stuff crowdfund could buy out the dang thing … I mean, in theory. Who wouldn’t want to own an augmented reality company? It’s sure more interesting than whatever else Snapchat is doing with augmented reality. Because the world really needs more puppy dog selfies…
Great Stuff: Weekend Rabble-Rousing
That just about wraps things up for this week of Great Stuff.

Music Marketing: The 8 Step Digital Music Marketing Plan
Music Marketing: The 8 Step Digital Music Marketing Plan: via LANDR Blog
Releasing new music is always a special and exciting moment.
You worked hard to create something that’s personal to you and now it’s time to share it with the world.
But how to get your tracks in front of as many people as possible?
You don’t want to put in all that time and not have anyone hear what you’ve worked so hard on.
You need a music marketing plan to grow your audience and capture the hearts of new listeners.
In this article, we’ll look at everything you can do to successfully piece together a great music marketing campaign.
Plus, we’ll show you how to promote your music in the lead up to your release and post-launch.
1. Grow your following on social media
Your social media following is the quickest measure of your popularity and reach.
But don’t get discouraged. You don’t need tens of thousands of followers to be considered successful.
Having a small niche of followers who care about you is often enough to convince labels and press that your music is worth their attention.
There’s plenty of ways to increase your following.
Here’s a few ideas:
Playing shows in your local scene
Engaging in conversations online
Regularly posting about your creative process, music, and life
Networking with other artists
Focus on finding the right followers for your social media accounts.
1000 loyal fans are always worth more than 100,000 lukewarm (or even fake) followers.
1000 loyal fans are always worth more than 100,000 lukewarm (or even fake) followers.
2. Get a band website
Band websites are a music marketing tool that musicians often overlook.
When you create a website for your project you’re claiming an online space that’s uniquely yours.
You can design your website in any way you like, and you can use it for a number of different purposes.
For example, a website can be used to host your electronic press kit, collect fan emails for a newsletter, announce upcoming tours and events, or serve as a conceptual art piece.
The cool part about owning a website is that its content is up to you!
The cool part about owning a website is that its content is up to you!
And don’t worry about coding, tools like Squarespace or WordPress make it easy to build a custom website using a cool template.
3. Develop your EPK
If you’re planning a big release, you really need to piece together a strong EPK.
Getting press coverage should be a big focus if you’re just getting started.
We’ve written about how to make the perfect EPK before, but here’s a few quick tips.
Keep it simple
Include basic details about the release
Mention any major shows
Include past press coverage
Include your music, artist pictures, and any relevant music videos.
Once your press kit is ready your best bet is to send it to journalists, radio stations, blogs, and podcasts that already know about you.
If you’ve gotten press from playing shows in your local scene first reach out to any outlets that previously covered you.
It’s very rare to have your EPK get picked up by a media group that hasn’t heard of you yet.
Industry professionals get thousands of cold emails a day from hopeful artists looking for coverage.
Practice proper email etiquette to respect their time and increase your chances of getting a response
4. Release singles from your album early on
It’s really common these days to see artists release singles sequentially in the lead up to a big release.
So once you plan the actual date of your album’s release, plan to release a few singles up to a month in advance.
That way you can treat the launch of each single as a mini-release, complete with a round of press, social posts, and even a music video.
This is why you’ll benefit from having some kind of video to accompany any single from your release.
You’ll benefit from having some kind of video to accompany any single from your release.
Scheduling your releases for online streaming is easy if you work with a distribution service like LANDR.
5. Paid promotion tactics
Digital advertising is a relatively new music marketing tactic for artists.
If you use it, you need to be careful since it won’t be effective and can cost a lot of money if you don’t do it right.
The main philosophy behind pay per click advertising is that you only want to pay for a click that will earn you money.
Only pay for a click that will earn you money.
That means targeting your paid ads to the kind of people who buy vinyl, concert tickets, merch, or at the very least stream your music.
As a starting point, your best bet is to boost posts about your single or album on social media.
Each social media platform has its own way of boosting posts, but let’s dive into how it works on Instagram.
How to boost posts on Instagram
In Instagram’s case, you have to turn your account into a business account, you can do this in the settings of your account.
Beyond boosting there’s a number of benefits to getting a business account including stats about followers and engagement and the option to put your contact in your bio.
Once you have a business profile follow these three steps to start boosting posts:
Step 1: Click the promote button at the bottom of the post you want to promote
Step 2: Pick a goal for your ad.
You’ll have the choice between profile visits, website visits, and promotion visits. Depending on the type of post you’re promoting the goal will change.
A new album might do best with profile or promotion views, while concert promotions will do better by encouraging ticketing website clicks where viewers can purchase tickets.
Step 3: Pick an audience for your ad.
Instagram gives you the choice between automatic, local, and manual targeting.
Automatic targeting uses Instagram’s algorithms to target people like your followers, which is great for album promotion.
Local targeting chooses people in a specific location, which is perfect for concert tickets.
Manual targeting allows you to customize who exactly will see the ad.
When is paying for online promotion worth your money?
Boosting posts to your followers ensures that people who know and care about your recordings most see your ads.
Going beyond boosted posts can be risky since pay per click advertising can get pretty complicated very quickly.
You may be better off hiring a specialist to run your paid campaigns for you, or relying on an in house expert if you have a record label supporting your release.
6. Get playlisted
Playlists and algorithm recommendations are one of the most common ways to discover new music today.
Whenever you release a song or album, make an effort to get placements on relevant streaming playlists.
Whenever you release a song or album, make an effort to get placements on relevant streaming playlists.
There’s a few ways to do this.
The first way is to flag your album for playlisting when publishing it on Spotify and correctly identifying its genre and subgenres.
This won’t mean your album is guaranteed a playlist placement, but it means you’ll have a chance.
The second way to get your music playlisted is to work with a music publisher that has pre-existing relationships with streaming platforms and can get you an in.
Your last way to get on a playlist is by developing relationships with blogs and other media that make playlists that are independent from Spotify.
This is a great plan if your music appeals to a specific niche since smaller playlist makers like Resident Advisor or BIRP often focus on niche music.
7. Run a college radio PR campaign
When I ran a local tape label in my early twenties one of the most effective DIY methods we had for promoting our releases was college radio PR campaigns.
We had a list of local college radio station addresses across the country, so we bought and burnt CDs, packaged them up nicely and sent them in the mail.
For less than two hundred dollars we were able to get our artists played across the country.
For less than two hundred dollars we were able to get our artists played across the country.
It worked because college radio stations get a ton of online submissions, so they love getting physical CDs in the mail.
Here’s a couple tips for making sure your radio PR blitz actually works.
Label the CD’s spine with your artist and album name.
Since the CD will live on a shelf in the radio station’s library, you need all the important information to be clearly visible on the spine so the DJ can see it.
Send the CD in a nice package
When we sent our CDs we included tons of stickers and a handwritten thank you card.
I know it worked because we got tagged in several radio station’s Instagram posts thanking us for the note and package.
Follow up with the radio stations by email a week after sending your packages
This helps to identify which stations checked out your package and confirm if your PR campaign was successful or not.
Once you know what radio stations actually opened and played your package, you know who to skip and who to keep in contact with for your next PR campaign.
8. Launch your album in style
It’s time for a big party to celebrate your finished release so why not plan a big launch show and tour for your new record.
It’s not just another round of PR, it’s your opportunity to start generating real excitement about your new release.
It doesn’t matter how big your project is, whether it’s a local dive bar or a mid-size night club you can find an appropriate venue for your release show.
Whether it’s a local dive bar or a mid-size night club you can find an appropriate venue for your release show.
Make a big deal about it on your social media accounts in advance of the launch day, and make sure to book acts that compliment your music and will draw new audiences in.
Then plan a small local tour to other cities in your area. I’m sure you can find a local bar show to play in the next city over.
Running a small tour is a great way to prove you’re serious about your release.
Your music marketing plan is going to work
If you put the same effort into your music marketing plan as you put into your music you’ll have success with your next release.
Your best bet is to put together a plan and stick to it.
When you find your audience and grow your fan base, all the hard work will be worth it.
Congratulations on the new release, now get out there and promote it!

Forced Traffic & Conversion (FT&C) Strategy
Forced Traffic & Conversion is a strategy I have developed to speed up making money through Real Estate Investing, big time. This strategy works great for seasoned investors and beginners alike, but especially beginners will appreciate this as this strategy will get them up and running scaling their business within weeks, not years. Before we dive into this we need to know a bit about the role of SEO and credibility when it comes to deal making.
But first, let me explain the true meaning of life! Are you little gringos ready? Are yeh? Well okiedokie then here goes. Get your pens ready, the meaning of life and the meaning of “to be” finally revealed. Here goes, are you ready? Seriously ready? REALLLY rrrrrrreaaallllly ready?
OK fine calm down. Here is the meaning of life: So here goes.
Deals = Traffic + Conversion
Well there you have it. whooaaaahhhhh shhhhhhhhuuuaaaahhhhh the crowd goes wild whhaaahhhhhhssshhshhhhsh whoaaahhhh. Where is my stinking Nobel Prize?! Heck I deserve 3 of them.
OK this is a very true and valid equation, yet very generic. So lets get a bit more specific.
DEALS = SEO + Credibility.
OhSnap I am a genius! This is more like it.
SEO gives us Traffic
CREDIBILITY gives us Conversion.
So this explains how we went from the generic version to the specific one. Everyone following thus far? Yes? Good!
OK.. so now…
We all know that SEO takes a while to take effect, but credibility is instant. All you have to do, to be credible, is show your reviews, put your phone number on your site, take a picture of yourself and show it on your page (along with some other secret strategies my clients have access to wink wink) and… you are set. You can be done with this in 2 weeks, 3 weeks, a month if you go all out, but you have full control over it.
Applying The Meaning Of Life
So we have one part of the equation covered (credibility). Now we need traffic… how can we get instant traffic, so that we can satisfy the second part of the equation?
Well easy, PPC, DMM, Facebook Ads, pick one, heck pick two!
Now we have a very credible website, and we have plenty of traffic heading your site. You make deals, immediately. Now you know enough to understand the FT&C strategy!
Applying The Forced Traffic & Conversion Strategy.
The Forced Traffic & Conversion strategy is a very powerful strategy that will have beginners hit the ground running. How would you feel if I told you that I have developed a model where you immediately started scaling your business into a money generating machine the moment you start? This sounds like a guru pitch huh? Well don’t believe me then! See if I care, loveyoubuhbye!
Yup most businesses will struggle to start, then they work hard to make any money (if this ever even happens), then they have to make enough money and profits to grow, and after they finally manage to grow enough only then will they start thinking about scaling, hiring people and automating methods into systems.
Often this takes years and years. WHY wait? You can immediately start with the scaling process! Interested? I figured. I will tell you how this is done! Isn’t that nice of me!
Let’s say you are a beginner, you don’t even have a website, or your site is new, or your site is old but neglected on page 68 on Goolge. What do you do. You go to BiggerPockets and you read all these depressing sad poor attempts at wholesaling making money and everyone telling you the same crap “do driving for dollars, do bandit signs, ohh no no buy lists. Buy the foreclosure list, no no the probate list is where it’s at, OMG no you fools obviously its the absentee owners list.. bla bla bla ALL WRONG!!
1. START GAAHDAMNIT: Get A Real Estate Investing Website!
SEO for real estate investors is important. That is what we need to focus on from the start. That is what I did, and look at me now! FORGET lists, forget D4D, CC, bandit signs! NO! Stop winging it. Try a method that works, actually WORKS. And yeah I will show you the way to freedom.
So your and !
You start with getting a website. Not just any website, you get an Investor Carrot website. Nothing else works as well as this platform so get it! I have discussed previously how to set up your Investor Carrot Website. So review that now if you must. But just to make it convenient for you, here is the plan you need to pick. Just click on the referral picture below. Let me know you clicked on it and I will give you that referral fee back. Makes your site a little cheaper.
2. Deals = SEO + Credibility
Do SEO yourself, hire it out, I do not care! The SEO (& Credibility) efforts needs to start IMMEDIATELY though. To make sure the SEO efforts are going to be done lets assume you hire someone (that friggin KNOWS what they are doing). I am already sad for you because I am 100% sure whom ever you will hire will do SEO wrong. EVERYONE is doing it wrong, I promise you this! Don’t believe me? Visit the blog where I show Erics low DA and still ranking high proving everyone tries to please google not the traffic.
You Need Money To Make Money
If you are afraid to spend money to make money, you shouldn’t be on my blog nor should you ever be an investor. PERIOD. So to all you people that are going to “wait till I have some money to market”, DUDE… NO… NOOO!
NO!
Get a job, save money, get money, do it right. Don’t go door knocking or driving for dollars “because that’s free”. You are wasting your time. You are winging it. Work with a proven system! So if you simply do not have the money to market you will become successful a LOT faster if you took a two month job at MC D, save up $3,000.- and start investing the right way.
Sure you may get lucky getting a deal doing Driving for Dollars, and then again, you may not! If you want a 100% sure and guaranteed way of making it (this is called having a system), you get a job and get that marketing budget going.
Work The Plan
Let’s assume you will do this the right way and you pay someone that knows what they are doing $1,500,- to work on SEO, website credibility, and create landing pages for you.
Then devote an extra $1,000.- for your marketing budget, let’s say you choose Facebook ads.
So now you have spend $2,500,- for the first month. Honestly, this is not at all a bad budget when it comes to marketing. DMM would cost you double ($5,000.-) for a similar campaign (buying a list of 2000 to 3000 people and paying for the cards to print and ship out, with far lower ROI).
So within the first 30 days, you are down: $2,500,-.
SEO services: $1,500,-
Facebook marketing services: $1,000.-
there is some good news though: “bandit signs”, “driving for dollars”, “door knocking”, “hoping a lead will fall in your lap out of the blue”, won’t guarantee leads reliably but, Facebook ads, and PPC will, as long as:
you are targeting the right audience
you have enough budget dedicated to your campaign
If you satisfy these 2 criteria you WILL get leads, guaranteed. Isn’t that some news to be joyful for?
3. Get Your First Lead: Wholesale Like A Boss!
Doing SEO for your real estate investing website is crucial yes, but we all know SEO will take time for results to creep in. So we now have a very credible website (or at least this is being worked on in the background). While someone else is worrying about SEO we are going to start marketing on Facebook and sending that traffic over to our landing page that was created 1 week into this strategy.
All we are going to focus on, is getting 1 deal. Indeed JUST one. We do not care how we will get the next deal the following month. We don’t care about anything else but just this ONE deal right now. Since we will spent the $1,000.- the right way by not winging it and apply the marketing correctly you will generate leads. The goal is to wholesale one deal.
Wholesaling Is Not A Matter Of Luck
Wholesaling this deal is not going to be a matter of luck. The second you sign a contract from your marketing you WILL wholesale it and this is also a guarantee. You know how I am so sure will will be able to wholesale this contract? Because you do not sign a contract until the numbers work FOR YOU! None of this crap where you sign a contract based on the absolute lowest a seller is willing to sell for. NO! YOUR numbers are the only numbers that matter!
When you ONLY sign contracts that work for you (and thus your buyers), you will have no issues selling the contract to a cash buyer. And that is how you become successful at wholesaling! And now you have made $10,000.- in a wholesale fee!
Dance around, run 5 laps butt naked around your block, get it out of your system because although you are set, and I can already tell you’ve made it, there is still a lot of work to do to realize that “you have already made it” notion.
4. Repeat: The FT&C Method!
Now things are getting exciting! You were down $2.500,- at the start of the 30 day plan, but by the end of these 30 days you made $10,000.-!! So what do you do?
Wells I’lls tells yous whats yous dos!
You take that $2.500,- and shove it up your damn brown or black damp musky smelling… wallet! You thought I was going to say ass didn’t you. You are seriously perverted. Get off my damn blog you freak!
Anyways, you take what you spent out of that 10 grand, you now have & $7,500.- left. So within the first cycle you managed to make a profit. Maybe in your market the wholesale fee is not $10,000.-, and your marketing costs are also different, and that doesn’t matter. All the numbers automatically adjust to your market. The point is that you will make a profit. If marketing is more expensive where you are, then the wholesale fee is a lot more. You sign deals based on numbers that would work for you in YOUR market to make a profit.
Now this is what you do. You now double your marketing budget to $2,000.- and you fork over an other $1,500.- for continued SEO work on your website.
Where are we at this point?
Right here:
PROFIT! = $10,000 – $2.500 – $2,000 – $1,500 = $4,000
$10,000.- = Money made from wholesaling the lead.
$2.500.- = Money you spent getting the $10,000.- (remember this was the $1,500.- (for SEO) + $1,000.- (for Facebook Ads)).
$2.000.- = Your new Facebook marketing budget (double your previous marking budget).
$1.500.- = For this next months SEO effort.
You made money. It WORKED!! Sure this is your first deal. This means you were nervous, not very confident, you made mistakes, you could have done things better, you could have done things more efficiently and by all means this deal could have been sheer dumb luck! Absolutely… and you know what? WHO CARES. You made $10,000.-.
You followed a plan and it actually worked. Your motivation level has gone through the roof. “Let’s do it again“, you say, and yes I agree. Let’s see if we can do this again. Same method, but we will make a few changes. What changes you ask? Well…
When you did this the first time, you wrote down notes. What was causing you stress, delays, what could have done better, what did you miss, what could have been avoided to make this method better, faster, more efficient. You have a log!
You will now do this exact method again, but this time, you will tweak it based on all the improvements proposed from all the mistakes you’ve made AND you will now double your marketing budget. In addition you fork over an other $1,500.- for continued SEO work on your site (remember you hired someone for $2,000.- a month to do your SEO for you.
So what do we have now?
You have some experience now
You have double your previous budget
You tweaked the method not to make the same mistakes again
You do it again. Now, there is no reason why you wouldn’t do AT LEAST equally good, if not twice as good (as you have doubled your marketing budget). So you make two deals this time. Again you wholesale them and now you made $20,000.-.
Now this is very important. Following a method once making a deal could be pure dumb luck. Following the same method twice and make a deal twice,… that is a SYSTEM!
The Money Making More Money Machine
Have you realized something amazing yet? You are not spending a single cent out of your pocket anymore. Your money is making you more money. The system is self sustaining. It’s like magic!! WHAAAAAAAA??
Out of that $20,000.- you take an other month of SEO payment out and this time you put $7,000.- in marketing. Now you make 10 deals! and you net… what…$70,000.- in profits? With $70,000.- you can put down an astronomical marketing budget, but you won’t! Calm down, Seabiscuit!
You now look like the big dogs that put down $30,000.- a month on marketing. But now you have a new problem. Your one-person-team (you) can not possibly handle the leads coming in at a $30,000.- marketing budget.
5. Hire People: Fire Yourself!
Now you stop. You hire an acquisitions manager, and you hire a receptionist. You give that a “try”. You put these people in place and you hit the “start” button. Again you note down all the bottle necks, all the trouble areas and all the issues that hiring and working with people bring. You analyze it, you tweak it and you make things more efficient by either hiring more people to cover all these extra positions that opened up as a result of hiring your first round, or you train your people to become more efficient.
6. Scale Up: Grow!
With every new cycle of marketing, increasing your budget, tweaking, you increase your budget. Little did you know that you have been scaling your then non existent business, from the start.
7. Step Out: Automate!
As you increase your budget, and you hire more people, you will see soon enough that you will be getting more leads, you make more offers, do more deals, all while you do far less work, because you will eventually have a complete solid team in place that will handle every task there is to do. The a remarkable thing will happen without even expecting it.
8. SEO World Domination: SEO Always Wins!
As you are so busy enjoying watching your business grow and making money you completely forgot someone was constantly working on your SEO, Now after the 4th or 5th iteration of the tweaking process you have your business mostly on automatic. On one heavenly day you were just counting you money as you do every day, when you hear this werd “DINGGGGG”. “Well goodness gracious what was that“, you ask, as you lift your head with a 100 dollar bill slips down your face with drool all over it. ANd you look at your fancy laptop screen. “Oh an emailmajiggy“. And you open it… and your eyes open wide. “Yo dawg, I GOT AN ORGANIC LEAD“. Suddenly “Dingg dingg dingg FRIGGINDINGGG“, your email gets bombarded like so:
You now get leads for free. The lead count may quite possibly be compatible to your 30K marketing budget for paid traffic, BUT you lead quality is far superior:
#gallery-0-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
So the equivalent to getting THIS many motivated seller leads using paid marketing could possibly require doubt the marketing budget! This is why you NEED SEO in your live no matter if you are getting plenty of leads using paid marketing.
60. Forced Traffic & Conversion (FT&C)Strategy Forced Traffic & Conversion (FT&C) Strategy Forced Traffic & Conversion is a strategy I have developed to speed up making money through Real Estate Investing, big time.

Hey - Pat from Starter Story here with another interview.Today's interview is with Aaron and Lior, the founders of Hush Blankets, a brand that makes weighted, anxiety reducing blankets. Some stats:Revenue/mo: $50,000Started: January 2018Location: Toronto, OntarioFounders: 2Employees: 1Hello! Who are you and what are you working on?Hey there! We’re two young entrepreneurs from Toronto working hard to control this "side hustle" which is rapidly turning into our main business because of it’s fast growth. Our product, Hush Blankets, is a weighted blanket that when placed on you, helps instantly reduce anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Our customers are mainly people looking to buy this for their spouses that can’t sleep, or as gifts for other family members. Usually women above 40.We’ve grown fast, averaging 300% month over month growth, rapidly expanding into new ecommerce channels as well. What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?Who would have thought that a background in the software and restaurant space would lead to a health product. We’ve always been entrepreneurs, both dropping out of university and with the mindset that we can create more for ourselves than school would ever provide us.The idea for Hush started when my partner, Lior, worked at an overnight camp for special needs children. They had a room there called the "Stimulation Room" and it had all sorts of devices and tools that were sensory-related. One of them was a weighted blanket. If your current idea isn’t successful, don’t give up until you’ve hustled at it for 4 months straight. It was so effective that he kept going back there just to try it out. But it was ugly, and he knew it could be improved.A couple years later, the Hush Blanket was made into a premium product that any adult can enjoy the benefits from, outside of a hospital or rehab centre. We both have our own businesses, but we also struggle from stress and sleeping from time to time. Once we started trying our own product, we were in love.We threw up a quick Shopify site and started running pre-orders. Those flooded in, and we knew our first order was going to sell out quick.Describe the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing the product. There is only 2-3 main manufacturer players in the market, but really they’re just textile companies that decided to perfect this and niche down. We are currently looking into keeping our options open by actually owning and controlling the entire manufacturing process from start to finish, which will give us the competitive edge. The trick is designing the product yourself to be superior and one that everyone will rave about. This consisted of late nights deconstructing prototypes, and even buying every competitor’s blanket until we were satisfied with our first version.I have limited experience in physical product design, except the odd t-shirt or product bag for our juice kitchen. In the beginning, we really had to learn from competitors and limited market research with real people trying our prototypes. We both funded our first production run ourselves (insanely expensive for textiles, super high barrier to entry), with a loan to the company we paid a lawyer to create.Describe the process of launching the online store/business.Shopify was a natural selection because it’s just so great at e-commerce. We only have one product at the moment, so it was easy to choose a theme based around that. We’re both marketers by trade, SEO and Social Media, so we knew we had that covered. We’re also lucky to be surrounded by very good friends that run our AdWords and Facebook ads.Everything was financed by us in the beginning. We pretty much poured everything we had into this, took out 3 credit cards and 2 lines of credits with 2 different banks to help with larger purchases along the way too. Over $80,000 spent, 1200 units on the way and we were ready to start rolling. The first sale was made the very next day after starting AdWords. Since then, every dollar we make we put back towards either inventory or growth through marketing. We don’t plan on taking a profit for the entire first year, and we know some of our competitors simply can’t afford to do that, so we’re blessed to have our other businesses that allow us to do that.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers? Our biggest growth factor has been AdWords for sure. Most people think it is too expensive, but if you have an A+ ads team, and a decently priced product, it can work well with a lot of room to scale. The reason it works so well is because people are searching for the unique product where they read about it elsewhere online. Their buyer’s intent leads them to clicking our ad and much more likely to convert. Our homepage is setup like a landing/sales page since we only have one product at the moment so that helped with conversions too. We’re now spending well into 5-figures a month on advertising, with Facebook for retargeting, and massive plans to use it for cold audiences as well. Every 2 weeks we try another paid platform and that seems to fuel growth even more.We have a campaign that "farms" new keywords that are “long tail keywords”. Once we know people buy through those super unique or buyer-intent keywords, they are moved to a winner campaign. The goal is to eventually have a massive campaign with only winner keywords that we bid on.Lead times (the time it takes from manufacturing to warehouse) completely blindsided us in the beginning. It can be incredibly difficult to estimate when and how many units to order. We are going heavy on video production for cold audience with FB traffic, and we even recently hired a salesperson to call our abandoned carts and give them a personal touch of customer service. As long as it’s profitable (or break-even in some cases), keep doing it. My biggest advice would be to have enough cash and a really good advertiser to be willing to test things for 3-4 months before calling it quits. We also hired a full time instagrammer to just do social media and find us influencers, which we plan to use as a big channel of traffic.Email has been huge for us too, which we know most stores don’t tackle. Automations, winback campaigns, retargeting, thank you follow-ups, etc, not only help drive branding but have increased sales dramatically.Connections are huge in this game as well. We’re lucky to have friends that can run our ads for cheap, do massive press releases for free, and that we can handle a lot of the marketing ourselves because of our expertise. Build connections, utilize them. How is everything going nowadays, and what are your plans for the future? On everything we do, we try to keep our profit margin at around 30% or more. Our biggest aim right now is to lower production costs as well as lead time so that we can go bigger with our marketing while knowing that we can deliver more blankets, profitably. We don’t see the need for an office yet, or anytime soon, since we are pretty much digital nomads, but we did set up a home office where we both work.In the coming weeks, we will be fully launched on Amazon, as well as expansion into USA and Canada with their own separate websites. The long term goal will be to have all of our channels running like a well oiled machine, at which point we will likely be at around $300,000/month (if SEO kicks in properly).More products, and variation, will lead to higher cart values and an increase in CLTV/repeat purchases.Brand plays a huge role here as well. As we attack from every angle, we also have a more premium look to our brand, which allows us to demand higher prices and win more customers when people are deciding or comparing us to competitors.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?Lead times (the time it takes from manufacturing to warehouse) completely blindsided us in the beginning. It can be incredibly difficult to estimate when and how many units to order. If it’s too long, you run out of cash to purchase more inventory. So it’s always a delicate balance there. There’s also a huge amount of luck when it comes to SEO, which is by far the biggest driver for some of our competitors. We’re going full force on that, but it’s just one of those things you can’t fully control. It also really, really helps to focus on one business at a time. Since we each have our own businesses, this is only something we can focus on for half of the day. FOCUS. Keeping each other accountable has really helped us stay on track. What platform/tools do you use for your business?Shopify for ease of use and order managementDrip for email capture and automationDrift for customer emails/chat/targeted messagingAhrefs and Serpfox for SEOBeeketing for social proof on the websiteZapier for many of our connectionsGoogle Sheets for some advanced trackingXero for accountingScout Abandoned Cart Recovery - great tool that automatically sends you a Messenger bot reminder with options to follow up via phone/SMS/WhatsappA lot is also done manually (surprising, I know). If you have the time or money to manage ads and things yourself, you don’t need to rely on too many tools. What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?I’m not huge into consuming content. I’d rather look for a quick solution on Google when I need an answer.I follow Gary V for inspiration and Tim Ferriss from back in the day got me on the track to working for myself.Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?I mentioned this before but: FOCUS.I see so many people hopping from one idea to the next, or trying to many things at once. If you have a business and want to move on to another idea, make sure your current one has systems in place to flourish without you.If your current idea isn’t successful, don’t give up until you’ve hustled at it for 4 months straight. It also helps to have cash. It just makes things move faster and keep the ball rolling quicker. Get a job, save up, get investors.Liked this interview? Check out more founders that shared their story on StarterStory.com

How to scale your agency (with the help of an online army of freelancers)
Scaling your agency can be a scary thing. Most agencies want to grow, but the steps it takes to achieve that growth can be daunting.
But if you want to grow and take your agency to the next level, you’ve gotta be willing to experiment. Sometimes experiments fail (thanks, Crystal Pepsi… oh and the Taco Bell Chihuahua, too). But sometimes, those experiments are so successful they make your head spin.
And that’s been my experience with online freelancers.
Conklin Media logo by Rintika
Hi, I’m Dave. I’m the owner of Conklin Media, a digital business growth and web design agency. Building a reliable network of awesome freelancers has been an essential part of my success. For two years, one of my companies (which was started with a $5,000 credit card and no outside investment) was on Inc 500’s list of fastest growing companies in the country.
Failing wasn’t an option for me. <FUN-FACT> I’ve got 2 set of twins—girls age 21 and boys age 13</FUN-FACT>. I was willing to do anything and everything to make it work. We put ads everywhere and hired a ton of freelancers, commission-only sales people, and got them fired up about what we were doing. A few years later we had 60 employees and had helped thousands of clients market and grow their small businesses.
So how, exactly, do freelance designers help you scale your agency? —
Freelancers allow you to focus on ideas instead of implementation
By minimalexa
As an agency, your job should be to focus on the big picture for your clients. What makes today’s top agencies incredibly valuable to their clients is their ability to discover the challenges and goals of an organization and then use their knowledge to fix those challenges and meet those goals.
Not to hit you where it counts, but if you see your agency as simply a “talent for hire”—and not a business challenge solver and goal achiever—you’re missing a huge opportunity, and not serving your customers very well. Even if you have a background in these things, you’re not a designer and you’re not a developer. You’re a digital business growth expert: a business problem solver.
You’re responsible for the ideas. And if you want to scale, you need to hire someone else to manage the implementation.
And that’s where freelance designers come in.
Hiring a freelancer to manage the implementation of your ideas (whether that’s designing a logo or coding an app) frees up your time to focus on the real value you provide to your client—the strategy, idea and business problem solving.
So, for example, let’s say I’m designing a new website for a client. My team can come up with the ideas for the look, feel and concept, and then pass off the actual design process and edits to a freelancer, which frees up our time to brainstorm ideas for another client. We get more done in less time, our clients get their work done quickly and efficiently, and I get to provide the maximum value to my clients from both an ideation and implementation standpoint.
Long story short: freelancers manage the implementation so you can focus on the ideas—which massively increases the amount of value you can add to your clients (and will massively increase the size of your agency in the process).
Freelancers allow you to WOW your clients (and get referrals)
Another way freelancers help you scale?
They give you the opportunity to WOW your clients.
We had a client come on board recently that needed design support. We created a mockup and sent it their way. They liked it, but they weren’t 100% sold. So, I said to them, “For an additional $1,500, I’ll have my design team create about 20 different designs for you to look at as our starting point.” They were out of their minds excited about that idea.
Now, my small, in-house team is amazing at what they do. But let’s be real—there’s NO WAY they could come up with 20 custom designs in a cost- and time-effective manner. Just to come up with one custom design would take a day or two—and cost WAY more than $1500 dollars.
But I had a trick up my sleeve to WOW my clients: I ran a design contest on 99designs and got close to 40 design options to share with my clients—and it only cost me about $900.
So what happened? My clients spent $1500 to get a whopping 40 design options, which WOWed them so hard they had to pick their jaws up off the floor. I got to work with a great network of freelance talent to come up with the designs, and all I had to do was manage the communication with the designers. And I made $600 off the deal.
Definitely not something I could do without my army of freelance talent.
The point is, working with freelancers gives you the opportunity to go above and beyond for your clients. And when you consistently deliver the WOW factor, word gets around. Not only will your current clients give you more business, but they’ll refer you new business, which will help you grow your agency. And it’s all thanks to your freelancers.
Talk about WOW.

Freelancers allow you to broaden your services
It’s a sad reality that many smaller agencies don’t pitch full scale ideas—the kind of ideas that will create immense business growth for their clients—because they just can’t get the tactical work done in-house.
Client wants a t-shirt? Slam dunk the project with a freelancer. By diwaz.
And when you hold back on pitching full scale solutions to your clients—or send parts of their business elsewhere—you’re missing out on a HUGE opportunity to scale your agency.
But working with freelancers allows you to offer full scale solutions to your clients—even if you don’t have anyone in-house who can handle their requests.
For example, we work with a client who targets women who love—or want to learn more about—working on cars. They had the awesome idea to create a sticker that would go beneath the hood of a car showing how to jump a battery in the event of an emergency.
Our agency is focused on helping our clients grow their website and audience through SEO and social media, not on merchandising and product, so we’d never made a sticker for one of our clients before.
I could have just told the client to go get their sticker designed somewhere else because I don’t have the staff to handle it. But instead, I just hired a freelancer (from 99designs) to design the sticker. We got an incredible design, then sent the stickers to a ton of influencers who write for car blogs, which helped our clients grow their audience and traffic. It was a full scale solution, and our client was THRILLED.
Working with freelancers to fill in the gaps of services on your team allows you to offer your clients a wide variety of services and keep all aspects of their business within your agency—which is essential for growth.
Freelancers allow you to cover busy times without overdoing it on the hiring front
In the agency world, there are slow times and there are crazy busy times.
by Milos Zdrale
If you don’t hire enough people, you won’t have the manpower to get through the busy times and give your clients the kind of service they deserve (at least not without completely running your team into the ground).
If you hire too many people, you’ll have a lot of people sitting in your office and twiddling their thumbs through the slow times (and you’ll pay an insane amount in overhead while they do it).
The perfect solution? Freelancers, of course.
Hiring freelancers allows you to supplement your workforce during busy season without making the commitment of a full time hire. You get the ability to scale and grow without the need to hire payroll-draining staff that will completely tank your revenues when things get slow.
It’s a win-win situation.
You can hire in-house experts and give them the resources to succeed
by MarkCreative
I want true experts in-house that understand digital business growth, true experts in design, true development experts, SEO experts, etc. But the best people aren’t cheap. It can be tempting to hire two less experienced people (so you’ll have more capacity). But I’d rather 100% of the people in-house be A-Players for my company, and give them the ability to manage freelancers and crowdsourcing projects as they see fit to get the job done.
If I have a logo designer in house, who is great, why not give her the ability to use crowdsourcing to get the main ideas developed, put her own spin and finishing touches on them, and then present to the client? It makes her a Creative Director of sorts, allows her to be scalable and makes the client happier in the end. It’s seriously a no brainer.
Some common objections to working with freelancers (and why they’re bogus) —
So, even after reading all the reasons why freelancers are key to growing your business, I know there are some people out there who still might have objections. Here are some of the most common (and why they’re completely and totally bogus):
Is hiring freelancers cheating?
If you’re wondering if it’s cheating to take $2000 from a client and then hire a freelancer to do the work for $1000, the answer is NO.
The idea of buying low and selling high is literally the definition of a profitable business. There isn’t a business out there that makes money selling something for less than it takes them to produce it. As long as you get your client amazing work at the price they agreed upon, it doesn’t matter if you’re getting it done in-house or by a freelancer—or how much you’re paying the freelancer to do it.
Online design websites are my competition. Why would I want to work with them?
by João Brito
Now, if you’re thinking “I’m a design agency! Sites like 99designs are my competition!” it’s time to reexamine your thinking.
I will always be of the opinion that working and partnering with other people—even if you consider them your competition—is better than trying to go at it alone. Even the big guys do it! That new iPhone X you’ve got? Yeah… the glass is made by Samsung. And if these two can figure out a way to work together (they’ve sued each other so many times, there’s a Wikipedia page dedicated to their lawsuits), you can figure out a way to work with freelancer sites in a way that makes sense (and is profitable) for your agency.
I can’t control the quality of a freelancer, and it makes me nervous.
I hear this one loud and clear. You value your relationship with your clients and you don’t want to trust a mediocre freelancer with their work. And I’ll be honest—when you use freelancers, not everything you get back is going to be up to your quality standards. Every platform has freelancers who are amazing and freelancers who are… less than stellar. So, if you want to get high-quality work, you need to know how to find the right people efficiently.
There are legitimate things to be scared of. Finding a good freelance designer shouldn’t be one of them. Yeti Campfire by BATHI.
Here are a few tips to find high-quality freelance talent:
Use sites that vet their talent. 99designs hand-rates every designer on their site and assigns them a designer level. Upwork has a rating system that allows you to see how past clients rate the quality of the freelancers work.
Always take some time to evaluate each designer’s portfolio before making a hire. Past work is always a great indicator of future work, so if the quality is there on previous designs, you can be fairly confident it will be there in future designs as well.
And my favorite solution: instead of hiring a freelance designer from the get-go, run a design contest on 99designs. You’ll get a ton of designs from different designers and can judge the quality before you make an official hire. (And if you have the budget, go for a gold or platinum contest, where only mid and top-tier designers can compete, which will eliminate the more inexperienced or low quality designers from the talent pool from the beginning).
Are you ready to scale your agency? —
Scaling your agency can feel like an uphill battle—but when you have an army of high-quality freelancers in your corner, it becomes much easier to get up the hill, defeat the battle and scale your business to the next level.

Scaling your agency can feel like an uphill battle—but when you have an army of high-quality freelancers in your corner, it becomes much easier to get up the hill, defeat the battle and scale your business to the next level.
