💫 FAKE PRETEND RELATIONSHIP BC THEY'RE IDIOTS IN LOVE AND I ADORE THEM A LOT 😭😭
COMING RIGHT UP, QUEEN.
***
Kaz is going to regret this.
He walks into the ballroom with Inej’s gloved hand resting in the crook of his elbow, his crow’s head cane replaced with a standard one that would draw less attention.
Get past security. Break into the servant’s quarters. Have Inej scale the servant’s elevator shaft up to Druiminn’s office while Kaz lets the others in through the window. Nina and Matthias would create a diversion to distract the guards, allowing Inej to escape. Wylan and Jesper would be waiting to drive them away in a valet carriage outside.
They just had to get past security. Together. While pretending to be a giddy couple madly in love.
Inej had been opposed to the idea initially. But her desire to find information on Druiminn’s trafficking operations had won out against her pride. Or maybe it was her disgust. He couldn't tell these days.
“No.”
“I don’t recall asking for an opinion,” Kaz responded, not looking up from the layout of the mansion.
“I’m not giving an opinion. I’m telling you no.” He ran a gloved hand over his face. Only Inej could get away with such a statement, and she damn well knew it.
“It’s the only way we’re going to get past security to let the others in.”
“Then send Matthias and Nina.”
“Last I checked, neither of them can scale an elevator shaft or pick a lock in under 60 seconds. Think logically, Inej.”
“I am thinking logically,” she retorted. “And logically, we won’t be successful if we use this ruse.”
He studied her then — the set to her jaw, the way her hands sat stubbornly on her hips, the fire dancing behind her eyes. She’d been an entirely new person since she began her hunt for the traffickers that plagued The True Sea. He missed his Wraith more than he was willing to admit, but there was something equally captivating about the woman she’d become.
Kaz pushed aside the harsh whisper in the back of his mind reminding him that she was clearly better off without him in her life.
“Do you have so little faith in your ability to pretend to love a demon like me?” he said quietly, standing up and crossing the room so that they were only a breath apart.
He expected her to scoff at him, or perhaps fire back a sarcastic response about his own acting abilities.
But she surprised him instead when she reached a hand out to rest against his chest. He closed his eyes at the contact. There was the fabric of his vest between her skin and his own, but he could feel her warmth seep through to his very core. He yearned for it to consume him.
“I’m more concerned with my ability to pretend not to once the ruse is over.”
He sucked in a breath at the boldness in her admission. But when he opened his eyes, she was gone. Out the window as if carried by the wind.
In the end, she’d agreed and Kaz had felt vindicated.
But now that she stands beside him — dressed in a deep green silk dress that covers the daggers he knows are strapped to her thigh, her long hair flowing uncharacteristically free behind her, he’s beginning to think she was right.
The first hour of the evening goes off without a hitch. They make idle small talk with other partygoers and dance when the band plays
He holds her hand more than is strictly necessary, equally grateful and despising of her elbow-length silk gloves and his black leather ones. Over the past months, his desire to feel her skin against his has started to encroach on his repulsion of being touched. He’s awoken in the middle of the night, images of her lips against his cheek, his hand at her back lingering in his mind.
Kaz tries his best to push those thoughts from his mind as they make their way to the side of the ballroom. He has a job to do, a mission to complete. His unrealistic fantasies would have to wait for his dreams.
Even if he could have Inej, she deserves much better than the bastard of the barrel. She may have changed, but he has not. Not enough. Never enough.
In his distracted state, he doesn’t register the guards headed for them. But Inej does. She pulls him quickly around the corner, pushing him against the wall. The move itself is so surprising, his body doesn’t even react to her nearness.
“You wanted this to be the ruse, so now it’s time to put it to the test. Kiss me, Kaz Brekker.”
“What in Saint’s name—” But he’s cut off with her hands on his lapels and pulling him down to her. Her lips touch his, and sensation explodes like one of Wylan’s demolition sticks beneath his skin.
He expects to feel that familiar overwhelming need to pull away. He expects a wave of nausea to consume him at the contact. But instead, he feels an inextricable want to draw her closer. He wants to hold her against him. He wants to never let her go. He wants. He wants. He wants.
One of his arms wraps around her while one of his gloved hands cups her cheek, his cane forgotten as it clatters to the floor. He has half a mind to spin so that he can press even closer. But before he can move, a harsh cough sounds nearby.
Inej pulls away, an uncharacteristically ditzy smile plastered on her face. “So sorry, officers,” she croons. “Just got carried away with the music and the wine.” Woman must have been taking lessons from Nina in her spare time.
“Back to the main ballroom, both of you,” the guard cautions, pointing back around the corner to the crowd. She nods quickly, and both men continue on their patrol as if they’d never seen the two of them.
Kaz is stunned silent the entire exchange, eyes wide and fixated on Inej. Their exchange seems to not have phased her, and she smoothes out his lapels and picks up his cane.
“If only I had known how easy it was to shut you up,” she comments, a smirk pulling up one corner of her mouth. Her tease riles him into action, and he straightens himself. His hand reaches out to grab her arm as she passes in the opposite direction from the guard’s instruction.
“Inej...”
“Without armor, Kaz Brekker,” she says, her silk-clad hand tapping his own. “Until then, we have a job to do.”
She walks away in the opposite direction from the guard’s instruction, and he’s left standing there wondering when he’ll finally muster the courage to stop letting her go.

The Fourth Moon of Kr'vta
For Kidgemas 2020. The prompt for December 27 is “Snow Angels”.
Summary: While Lance tries to convince Allura that they should take a vacation on a snow planet, Keith and Pidge take matters in their own hands and set off without the rest of the paladins.
Also posted on AO3 under the username “kishirokitsune”.
❄ - ❄ - ❄ - ❄
There was only so long that Pidge was willing to watch Lance's painfully awkward attempts at flirting with Allura while also trying to convince her that a vacation on a planet covered in snow was exactly what they all needed. (Though why Lance “I-hate-the-cold-and-will-bundle-up-in-sweaters-if-the-temperature-drops-below-60” McClain wanted to go play in the snow would remain a mystery that she didn't care enough to solve.) She took a good look around to make sure Coran, Shiro, and Hunk were too preoccupied to pay her any attention and then she tapped Keith on the arm and gestured towards the doors.
It took Keith a few seconds to understand what she was indicating and then he nodded and they left the bridge without anyone noticing. Once the doors shut behind them, he turned to Pidge to ask what she wanted.
Pidge raised an eyebrow. “Who do you think helped Lance find a planet that's safe enough for us to visit? I figure we may as well enjoy it before Allura fully shuts down Lance's idea.”
A flicker of confusion crossed Keith's face. “You... want to go play in the snow?”
“Yeah, it sounds like fun,” Pidge said with a shrug. “Mom and dad used to take us to a snow lodge on some holidays just to get away from everything. Matt and I always had a blast. If it's not something you're into I understand, but I'm still going to go.”
Keith was quiet for a moment but he didn't hesitate to continue following her. It was as they drew close to the fabrication room and slowed down to open the door, that he softly admitted: “I've never seen snow before.”
Pidge paused long enough to glance his way and give him a smile. “Then we better get you suited up.”
The door slid open before them and Pidge led the way to the fabricator on the far side of the room. A variety of fabric samples were hung around the rest of the walls, all labeled so that someone could fully customize their clothing if they wanted. The only place along those three walls that didn't have fabric was a door leading to the changing rooms. For Pidge it was all familiar; she'd visited the room a number of times to recreate her favorite sweater, as well as to make a variety of shirts that she wore beneath it.
“What is this place?” Keith asked as he looked around.
“Wait, you've never been to the fabrication room?” Pidge asked with a frown. “How have you been wearing the exact same thing this whole time? I thought Shiro was going to show you how to use this!”
Keith shrugged. “I think he was planning to, but I never saw the point. I just use the shower in my room to wash everything at the end of the day and let it dry overnight.”
Pidge made a sound like she wanted to say something, but instead turned away to cover up her grin. It really wasn't a surprise that Keith was so self-sufficient in such an unnecessary way. She found it charming, in its own way.
“We'll talk about that later, but right now we're making you a coat. And a hat and gloves. Maybe some thicker pants,” Pidge mused. “You know, I made fun of Lance when he spent an entire day in here trying to input styles from Earth, but I may have to thank him for doing that, otherwise we'd be running around in the snow in our armor instead. Yes, that's an option. No, we're not doing that.”
“I guess that would ruin the spirit of things,” Keith remarked, sounding as though he was trying not to laugh.
“It would.”
Pidge directed Keith to step up onto a raised platform so the system could scan him for his measurements. Soon after, she made a few quick selections on the screen and the fabrication machine went to work. It wasn't long before there were two bundles of clothing deposited in a chute in-between the screen and the platform where Keith stood.
“Here's yours,” Pidge said, gesturing to the bundle of red-and-black. Her own was noticeably green, and she scooped it up into her arms and set off to the changing room without waiting for Keith.
She took her time stripping out of her sweater, tank top, and shorts, carefully folding each and setting them to the side so she could retrieve them later, until she was standing only in her underwear. There was a brief moment where she admired the way the red looked against her pale skin but that moment quickly passed and she chastised herself for moving so slowly when Keith was undoubtedly waiting for her.
Pidge redressed in her chosen clothing – a white turtleneck and weatherproof gray pants (which had a texture somewhat similar to jeans), over which she wore a simple pea-coat in emerald green. To complete her ensemble were a pair of dark gray boots, as well as white gloves and a knit hat.
When she left the changing room, Keith was waiting for her as he pulled on his own gloves, which were black to match his pants and boots. His coat, which was similar in style to Pidge's but longer, was an attractive shade of red and he wore a scarf and hat that matched. He lifted his head as she approached, his eyes flickering over her form.
“Ready to go?” Pidge asked. “I was thinking we could take the Red Lion, since she's the fastest.”
Keith didn't hesitate to agree and it wasn't long before the pair of them were flying out into space with Pidge giving out the coordinates for Keith to input. To keep the others in the dark for a little while longer (and to buy more time to fully enjoy the snow), they temporarily turned off communication to the Castle of Lions.
“So, where exactly are we going?” Keith asked.
“The fourth moon of Kr'vta,” Pidge replied. “The poles are a whole new scale of subarctic, at least compared to Earth, but around the equator it usually stays just under freezing and it's perfect for snow.”
Kr'vta itself was a massive gaseous planet and was surrounded by several sets of icy rings, not unlike Saturn. Only the two largest moons had names – Kr'x and Kr'tn – and both were slightly larger than Earth and capable of housing life. The third largest moon had a liquid surface too hot for most species to handle. The fourth moon was known for its icy cold temperatures and while there were once several outposts established there, all intel suggested they had been abandoned for more profitable locations.
The Red Lion landed on the surface of the moon without any problem and Pidge and Keith were soon disembarking into the snowy landscape.
Pidge breathed in deeply, enjoying the crisp, fresh air.
It had been so long since she last got to enjoy the snow. Plaht City never saw snow even during the coldest years, so the only time she saw any was during the winters when her family would vacation at a ski resort in the mountains. She had such fond memories of racing Matt to be the first one to make snow angels.
Her eyes lit up and she grabbed Keith's hand, tugging him farther out into the snowy field.
“Pidge, what-?”
“I'm going to show you how to make snow angels!”
She took his silence as agreement.
“The hardest part is standing up without ruining the image once you're done. Matt and I found the best way is to get someone else to help you up. Our parents were always willing to lend a hand, but in this case it'll just be me and you.” Pidge released his hand and took a few steps away. “Do you want to go first?”
“Um, maybe you should? That way I can see how it's done,” Keith said.
Pidge grinned at him as she spread her arms wide and tucked her chin against her chest before letting herself fall backwards. The snow cushioned her fall, the fresh top powder resettling and melting on her face. She giddily moved her arms and legs until she was sure she had the perfect image imprinted into the snow and then she raised her arms. “Lift me up, Keith!”
She could hear snow crunching beneath his feet as she approached and then saw a pair of hands come into view as he carefully grasped hers and began to pull her up and forward. It was when she was halfway up and able to stand on her own that she realized a problem, but it was too late.
Keith overestimated the amount of strength needed to help her up and yanked her fully into his arms, which knocked him off balance and backwards into the snow with Pidge on top of him.
For a few long seconds, they could only lay there.
And then Pidge started to laugh.
Keith snorted and was soon laughing just as hard, both of them lost to mild hysteria over their own silliness.
Pidge lifted herself up, suddenly aware of Keith's arm around her waist, and her breath caught in her throat as she witnessed pure joy light up his face. She couldn't bring herself to get up and ruin the moment, too enraptured by how gorgeous he looked. (And she'd always found Keith attractive, but seeing him so happy made him even more so.)
The moment was eventually broken with the roar of a Lion from overhead and the rush of wind generated from the Blue Lion coming in for a fast landing.
Keith's laughter faded away, but his smile did not. “I think Lance ruined your snow angel.”
“I'm sure I can think of a suitable punishment. Want to help?” Pidge asked as she reluctantly stood. She held out her hand to help Keith, though he didn't need it.
“If it means I can shove snow down his coat? Absolutely.”
Pidge covered her mouth with one gloved hand to cover the giggle that bubbled up. “I think I can arrange that.”

THE HEART OF YOUR DIGITAL MARKETING STRATEGY.
Your website is the foundation of a good online marketing strategy. Just say: the beating heart. Without a decent website, your entire strategy collapses like a pudding. In other words: this is the absolute starting point where you can place your product range. Yet you should absolutely not see it as a product catalog. Translate your products into benefits for the consumer.
A concrete example?
Take sun protection now. People post it because it blocks the heat, provides a lower energy bill and gives a sense of privacy. If sun protection providers know that comfort, money and safety are important factors, they must formulate this as concrete benefits for the consumer. In this case you have to make the consumer feel that awnings solve their problems.
This could be on your website, for example: 'Blessed hey, the sun. Well, not always ... In the summer, the sun often causes your home to overheat. In winter, on the other hand, the sun is so low that it always causes dazzling. Did you know that with high-quality sun protection you will never suffer from the above recognizable situations? Moreover, this lowers your energy bill by at least 5%. Discover all the benefits of sun protection here. ”
That is different from: 'With roller shutters and Verboven sun blinds you keep the sun out of your eyes. We specialize in roller shutters and sun blinds. View our range. ”
Some communication tips for your website
This is just one optimization you can implement on your website. Discover more tips below to transform your website into a lead paradise:
Be inspiring: show realizations and projects . An extra tip here: show what your products and / or services are for in practice. Tell us which products you used for this project and explain this.
Build trust with reviews : testimonials make or break your business. Not convinced? Take the test on yourself. Imagine: you go to a village in the Ardennes. Then you search the internet where you can eat well. Then you come to TripAdvisor and you come across two restaurants. One has not yet been reviewed and the other has four reviews from people who speak highly of it. Where will you be dining?
Speak plain language: avoid technical terms or abbreviations when describing a product or service. Nope, we really don't know what RAL19085 or a PVC extruded clip profile with a Ø3MM fabric string can be combined.
P stearate not about how good you are, but do it. This comes down to a summary of the above: show this in the way you write your texts, with realizations, with reviews, etc.
Respond to online inquiries as soon as you can . If someone enters your showroom and shouts: 'I want a quote!', Do you leave it there? Why do many construction industry companies do this online? Some just don't get in touch, while still providing an online tool for a quote request.
Think of the different target groups that end up on your website. Make sure your website is wide enough to accommodate different target groups.
YOUR COMPANY ON GOOGLE
Another way to be found is to register your company with Google. When someone searches for your brand name, they automatically see a company profile on the right. Below you can see an example of Coolblue:
I will explain how to do this in a short video of just 6 steps.
What are the benefits of this?
Online visibility : the people who search for your brand name immediately get a very visual example of your organization. They see the logo and atmospheric images of the showroom. Then they also see interesting information such as the address (with which they can consult directions with one click), website and opening hours. And what do we also see? Reviews from satisfied customers! You're on the map: When you verify your business information, your business will appear on Google Maps. This way, customers can request directions to your company. All contact details and reviews will also appear. Discoverable on different devices: Whether your customer searches for your brand at home or on the road on his laptop, iPad or mobile phone, he will find the same company profile including the correct information.
BLOGGING: THE WAY TO SCORE AT GOOGLE
Do you want to express your love to Google? Then start blogging. And this is why:
46% of all internet users read at least one blog per day. (HubSpot Science of Blogging)
Blogging is what you should do for this too:
B2B marketers who blog on average get 67% more leads than marketers who don't. (HubSpot State of Inbound)
Marketers who prioritize blogging are 13 times more likely to get a positive ROI. (HubSpot State of Inbound)
Blogs are ranked fifth in the rankings of most trusted online sources. (HubSpot Science of Blogging)
When you start blogging, you have to make sure that you blog about a topic that has search volume . For this you use Google Keyword Planner or alternatives such as Keywordtool.io or Wordstream . Do not focus on short-tail keywords such as 'Insulation', but on longer keywords such as insulation placement, insulation benefits, insulation premiums, insulation material and insulation <enter city>. This way you have more chance of top positions in Google.
Concrete titles that you can simply copy :
Save on your energy bill with these insulation tips.
Find out if your plans are eligible for the Flemish renovation premiums.
With these secrets you place insulation like a professional.
Survive the summer with customized sun blinds.
Renovating a bathroom? First read the following points for attention.
FACEBOOK: SHOW YOUR TRUE FACE
"Is Facebook not over yet?" some will think. Well, Facebook is still not outdated for businesses. It can really grow your business. With 1.6 billion active profiles, chances are that your target audience is prominent.
There are different strategies, formats or creative ideas to communicate to your target audience. Most importantly, just be honest and genuine as a brand . Sorry for the Bond Zonder Naam advice, but we will keep repeating it as long as companies ignore that advice.
So forget your marketing story and all your promotions. Tell your real story. Nobody wants nicely packaged, inflated USPs. Facebook is a social medium. We underline equally socially. It's about two-way street, interaction and relationship building . And in which relationship are you allowed to brag, or worse, lie?
Show photos from behind the scenes. Put your staff in the spotlight, show customer achievements including quotes, and more. The possibilities are enormous. When you have a Facebook page, people will leave reviews on it. Respond to these reviews regardless of whether they are positive or negative. Provide a fast response time so that the consumer realizes that you are dealing with him personally.
A well-maintained Facebook page can cost blood, sweat & tears. When you start looking at the results, your heart sinks completely. "Am I doing all this for 2 likes and 100 impressions?" you wonder out loud. You can ask your friends and family if they like and share your posts, but do you think that will pay off? Another, more correct solution is message sponsorship.
LinkedIn: SHARE RELEVANT CONTENT
Another social medium you should really focus on is LinkedIn. The chance that you will get leads from this is greater than on other social channels. LinkedIn is a business channel. When people follow you on Linkedin, it means that they are really interested in your services or products.
The messages here can be more businesslike. Talk about your business, the environment, and the growth you envision. In the ideal world, share your own relevant blog posts or share interesting articles from your sector . In this way you show that you are concerned with what is going on. This gives the consumer confidence.
Using social media also has a positive effect on your ranking in Google . If your pages are alive, Google will reward you with better rankings. In addition, your company profile on LinkedIn will also be found in the search engines. This effect increases when employees indicate on their personal profile that they work for you. Take the test here .
INSTAGRAM / PINTEREST: THE EYE WANTS SOMETHING TOO
Visual channels such as Instagram and Pinterest are perfect for creating a community . You will not score masses of leads from this, but it is still important to be present in the environment of your target group.
Instagram gives you the opportunity to display your brand, services and in a fun way. As a company in the construction sector you can post beautiful photos of realizations or behind the scenes. Plus, you're on a two-way street so your fans can get feedback right away.
Some #instatips:
Always use the same filter so that you define a clear style.
Make use of Geotags.
Use the correct #hashtags. Be sure to explore and see which hashtags are used within your sector.
With Pinterest, you are more likely to collect ideas for the end user. For example, you can make all photos on your website Pinnable . When those images are pinned, they will often be 're-pinned' and a snowball effect will occur. This way you increase the traffic to your website and you take on the role of influencer.
VIDEO CONTENT: PROVIDE YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE WITH INFORMATION IN AN EFFICIENT WAY
In every trend report you can read: video content is getting trendy. Wrong. Video content is hip. How many videos do you watch per day? A lot huh? That in itself is not surprising, because video is one of the most effective channels for conveying a specific message and disseminating it on a large scale . This is because there is too much information to be found these days. Humanity is asking for an efficient channel to find out quickly. And video is the answer to this question.
Deploy video content through how-tos. This way you can develop a concept / video sequence such as '60 seconds'.
Recognize the correct insulation in 60 seconds.
Your shutters spic and span in 60 seconds.
Ask online about your renovation bonuses in 60 seconds
Movies of the atmosphere, projects, walkthroughs, 3D drawings, how to use products safely, ... are also possible. Don't be put off by time. You know what they say: ' It always seems impossible until it's done '
EMAIL: BUNDLE YOUR CONTENT
You can collect all of the above content and email it to your database in the form of a newsletter. Provide a balanced newsletter that also looks good. There may be promotions, but alternate enough with fun, relevant content. Also write a haunting headline so that you trigger people to open it.
So not: 'The overview of Dakwerken Wouters'
Well: "Do you already know these secrets to save on your energy bill?"
For email marketing you can use programs such as MailChimp, Campaign Monitor or all-in-one platforms such as HubSpot.

Happy Small Business Saturday
To celebrate Small Business Saturday, we’ll be introducing you to several small businesses and the women who make them run.
Seattle Urban Farm Co.
Meet the women of Seattle Urban Farm Company. Their knowledgeable team can plan, build, and maintain the urban farm you always wanted but never thought you could personally manage—perfect for those of us who may not have a green thumb, but love the idea of homegrown tomatoes.
Hilary Dahl is co-owner and host of the Encyclopedia Botanica podcast. The podcasts are quick lessons in farming. Follow @seattleurbanfarmco to check out her tips and advice. The all female maintenance team includes Sarah Bolton and Emily Barry. Together, they care for over 60 urban vegetable gardens across the city. Daily tasks include planting the crops, keeping an eye on the soil, fertility, irrigation, pest management, pruning, weeding, and harvesting.
“Engaging with local businesses often takes more effort from the consumer, but I think it’s worth it. Buying local provides an opportunity for genuine human interaction, better quality products, and more interesting stories. The success of a small business often depends on word-of-mouth. Anytime you vouch for a local company, you are doing somebody a huge favor and I thank you on behalf of small business owners everywhere. Just get out there and rep the businesses you love.” -Hilary Dahl
Kubich Lumber Yard
Meet Bobbie Rowe. She’s been a nurse for two years, but she’s always played a big role at her family’s lumber mill. Her main gig is driving the water truck, and when it gets busy, it’s all hands on deck. Then you can find her throwing strips or controlling the multi-head resaw she built with her dad as a child. The mill has been in operation for over 70 years. It sits deep in the woods of Grass Valley, a small Californian town that was the epicenter of the Gold Rush in the 1800s. With a population of just under 13,000, the city is closely knit together by a strong sense of community and tradition. If you’re in the area and in need of some fresh milled timber, give Bobbie a call. They have a wide variety of products, ranging from sugar pine flooring to cedar siding. You can also visit their website: www.kubichlumber.com.
“People are especially shocked to find out I’m a nurse when I jump out of the water truck. I remember dad laughing really hard one day after I drove the truck when I first became a nurse. He told me a couple customers had just commented on how cool it was that he hired a woman truck driver and he replied ‘That’s actually my daughter, and can you believe she is giving up truck driving to be a nurse at Stanford? She must be crazy.’ The truth is I really would be crazy to completely walk away from the mill.” -Bobbie Rowe
Glass Artist Ona Magaro
One Magaro has been working with glass for 30 years. The shear heat and intensity of the craft most attracted her during summer camp. Years down the road, she earned her BFA from Alfred University and MFA from Bowling Green. Blowing glass requires immense physical strength, particularly when fabricating on the scale of some of Ona’s larger pieces. However, Ona considers her willingness and eagerness to evolve her approach to her work her greatest capability.
Though Thanksgiving has come and gone, hopefully the spirit of gratitude remains. Ona met her mentor in school, but he continues making an impact in her life to this day.
“My sculpture professor in undergrad at Alfred University, Glenn Zwygert, showed me that I needed to be fully committed and devoted to my passion. Glenn and I use to butt heads on a lot of topics, but through the years I realized that those interactions made me open up to being able to SEE. He is still mentoring me everyday, by his own pursuits and ambition to constantly be creating.” -@onamagaro
To see more of Ona’s work, visit her website: www.onamagaro.com.
Amaltheia Dairy Farm
Amaltheia Dairy Farm in Montana is a family run operation. Sue and Melvyn Brown broke ground on their very own Grade A goat farm Thanksgiving Day in 2000. After building their own cheese facility, they developed exceptional products with the highest standards for purity and flavor. Amaltheia offers 17 different products and the Browns are able to produce 2,000 pounds of goat cheese a week. Sue and Melvyn’s children are a big part of the business as well. Their son Nate and his girlfriend Karen play a big role in caring for the vegetables and animals along with property maintenance. Their daughter Sarah oversees operations at the cheese plant, though you can often find her fixing fences and feeding animals.
“To be raised in a barn is the most fulfilling childhood I could possibly imagine. Yes, it’s a lot of hard work; but you develop a close-knit relationship with animals and nature. And my parents’ ideals of organic, home grown food for their children has definitely been instilled in my brother and myself. We are blessed to be able to continue to develop and hone-in our farming and cheese making skills into the future. My brother and I hope to take the reigns and continue to provide our community with farm-fresh, organic products.” -Sarah Brown of @amaltheiadairy
You can order a fresh batch of Amaltheia cheese for yourself at www.amaltheiadairy.com.
Ceramic Artist Alayna Wiley
Alayna Wiley is a ceramicist, an art educator, and a craft curator. She teaches at The Art Shack in Brooklyn. This women-owned non-profit ceramic studio offers classes to both offer classes to children and adults. If you’re interested in learning more about hand building, wheel throwing, glazing, plaster mold making or slipcasting—head on over to @artshackbrooklyn for more info. When Alayna’s not working at The Art Shack, she’s a studio assistant at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her education is impressive and extensive. She’s studied at Oberlin College, Germantown Academy, Penland School of Crafts, and Harvard University to name only a few. Follow her instagram, @alaynawiley.nyc to take a closer look at her work.

Final evaluation
At the beginning of the project, I explored more abstracted themes around ‘Wonderland’ with my creative photoshoots focusing on mirrors and inner reflection. After conducting a character analysis of Alice, I wanted to create a garment for her reflecting her personality traits, animals she meets, things she experiences and how this influences her.
I was greatly influenced by Tim Walker’s White Rabbit photoshoot for Vogue Italia where the models are wearing over-sized rabbit heads (1). This made me look at the novel and the different characters Alice meets in more depth - leading me to create illustrations (2), a clay model (3) and eventually the tissue and wire mask seen in the final photos. I wanted the head piece to have more of a distorted feel instead of Disney-style “cute” rabbit. I researched the masks used in the 1973 ‘The Wicker Man’ (4) and how these added to the story line. Following along from this, I looked at artwork by Paula Rego’s ‘War’ (5) depicting human-like rabbits. This really helped me with the scale and the contoured look for the head piece as well as how it could be constructed.
When looking at possible silhouettes, colours palettes and construction methods, I came across costumes used in performance - including costumes by Georgia de Chirico in the play ‘Ball’ (6) from 1929 and the 1966 televised version of ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ (7). I really like both of these sets of costumes because of their block colouring. I incorporated this aspect into my final piece and illustrations by having the panels over the hips continuing into the trouser legs.
I also looked into the organic and nature aspect of Wonderland. Looking at flints (8) found in the fields surrounding my home helped for colouring and texture as well as sculptures by Peter Gentenaar (9) . He creates amazing, twisted pieces by creating a structure using bamboo and tissue paper. I wanted to use this method to create my sleeves - I used dope, modelling tissue and strimmer wire (10). However, this did not have the outcome I was after, so I manipulated fabric and used plastic boning instead to create a similar look.
Maths, Religion and Science - I developed my pattern cutting and construction method using mathematical working and calculations. I also looked into the darker aspect of Wonderland by watching a TED talk about Conscious Reality and how the brain processes our own reality, what calculation the brain makes to perceive it and how this relates to religious ideas of an afterlife. This links to Wonderland because of Alice’s experience and how this could be interpreted as either something that happens to her consciously or unconsciously in a dream.
I chose to focus on costume design, making, pattern cutting and dyeing. I picked these to focus on as I have not yet done a project with very complex pattern cutting, fitting and precision and really wanted to push myself. I chose dyeing as part of my project because I really enjoyed the process of printing my own fabric for the Inside Out project and the different effects I can make. This links very closely to my future plans as I want to do Costume Construction at university.
In the exploration stage of the project, I looked at the ‘Pool of Tears’ chapter from Alice in Wonderland. This led me into looking at how to make the fabric look wet and heavy without actually being that. I experimented with resin to give this look and it worked very well. I really wanted to include this sampling in my final piece but as my design developed this looked out of place with the overall aesthetic. I also sampled fabric manipulation techniques and dope/modelling paper to give the idea of expanding and contracting (as Alice does in size).
Overall view on outcome- broken down.
The colour palette – when deciding the colour palette for my overall look, I took a lot of inspiration from what Alice would see when falling down the rabbit hole. I used earthy tones - like the golden brown and greens - as an enhanced vision of nature, going into the more pastel colours of what I imagine Wonderland would have as you look up the costume.
In this project, I really focused on the pattern cutting, fitting and accuracy (12). I chose to do curved strips over the waist and creating a V shape in the centre front in order to exaggerate the waist and, with the under structures, help give a distorted figure shape. I found it difficult to get the point in the centre front even and continue the line accurately over the hips. This shape was inspired by James Charles 1940’s clothing (11) I decided to tell the story of ‘Absolem’ the caterpillar who helped Alice. This is shown by the stripes at the waist; they are thinner here representing his segmented body and wider at the bottom symbolising his growth into a butterfly.
I wanted to include pleated shapes down the legs on the light green side panel (13). However, when I tried to create these they did not work as I wanted them to, and I had to improvise. I hand dyed and made 60 flower shapes and hand sewed these over the hips whilst keeping the stripes visible. I chose the pastel colours pink, blue, purple and green as this is what I imagine Wonderland would have looked like before the Red Queen had all the flowers painted red. (14)
The colours used for the bodice were inspired by Disney’s animated version of Wonderland that most people associate with Alice. I used the white on the bodice to represent her curiosity and her youth. This also harks back to the original illustration -by John Tennial- of her white apron (15). As this costume additionally reflects characters Alice meets and her character development, this also resembles the white rabbit and the Queens servants who were painting the white roses red.
On the bodice, I wanted to include petal-like shapes. I used batik methods and hand dyed this piece. I originally wanted to dye them the same colour as the sleeves however something went unexpectedly in the dyeing process and created this turquoise colour (16). I am really pleased that this happened as this resulting tone linked the greens in the trousers to the blues in the sleeves. Having this on the front of the bodice really tied the whole costume together as before the bodice and trousers look very separate and not cohesive. I really like how the colour transitions from white to pale turquoise, growing out from the bodice.
For the sleeves, I tried lots of different techniques such as constructing a frame using tissue paper and dope inspired by Peter Gentenaar. However, this did not work in the way I wanted it to, so I resorted to using fabric manipulation. I dyed the white cotton using the dry ice and batik method to create different tones. As this is her most well know colour, I used the blue tones to represent Alice. I was very drawn to this colour and the idea of falling down a rabbit hole and different layers of the earth you would see. When out on a walk, I found blue Anglican flint and I really loved the texture and colours and included this into the sleeves. Another reason I chose this colour was to reflect her ‘Pool of Tears’ and the power of imagination.
To complete my costume, I created a mask from wire and tissue paper. I drew inspiration from Tim Walker’s photography from the ‘White Rabbit’ photoshoot for Vogue Italia where he used oversized animal’s heads. I started this process by drawing rabbit illustrations and developing this into a 3D clay model which I used as a basis for my final mask. I really like how the mask captures the white rabbit ambiance without being too cute/”Disney” and is instead darker and dream-like. I find this very effective as the White rabbit starts her journey and almost traps her in the world of Wonderland.
Overall, in my opinion my final outcome is very effective as I capture the dreamlike quality of Wonderland, with an uneasy feel. If I were doing this at college, I think my time management would be much better as I finished the garment 5 days late. I would have spent less time on the mock-ups and fitting but I feel this was necessary to complete my garment. I would have also included different print techniques and maybe a form of metal work or vacuum forming that I could not do from home. However, if I completed this project at college, I would not have made this outcome as I have now. I am very happy with what I have achieved. If I were to make this again, I would fix the bodice as the white cotton was a bit larger than the interlining layer causing wrinkling across the chest. I would also have built in a form of structure to the bodice to bring the waist in more and to avoid the wrinkling at either side. I would change the back fastening to something strong and be more innovative with that to have a flush finish.
I would really like to improve my time management in the future and make a schedule that is more realistic but still pushing myself. Going forward into the next project I want to work on using a wide range of skills and different approaches and design I could use to create a better outcome.

New top story from Time: The Pandemic Closed Art Galleries’ Doors. But Who Said a Gallery Needs Four Walls and a Ceiling?
The traditional art gallery—the sterile, windowless viewing room aptly labeled the “white cube” by artist and critic Brian O’Doherty in 1976—has dominated the art world for decades as the primary way to display works. The white cube, which has been compared to an operating room as well as a burial vault, has been championed as a way to maintain neutrality while viewing artworks. “The outside world must not come in, so windows are usually sealed off. Walls are painted white. The ceiling becomes the source of light. The wooden floor is polished so that you click along clinically, or carpeted so that you pad soundlessly, resting the feet while the eyes have at the wall. The art is free, as the saying used to go, ‘to take on its own life,'” O’Doherty wrote in Artforum.
But its eerie, clinical neutrality comes at a price. The cube creates something artificial about the way the viewer interacts with art, removing both from the outside world, and from anyone who doesn’t seek out or stumble upon that room. The cube has been perceived as a symbol of elitism: if you didn’t dress the right way or frequent certain neighborhoods, the cube and its contents were not for you. And if you didn’t know the right people, the chances of your work being displayed there were even slimmer.
Now the pandemic has made the gallery even more inaccessible, at least temporarily, inspiring curators and creators to reimagine how art might be shared. But while today’s circumstances are new, artists’ efforts to think beyond such restrictions are not. In the 1960s, members of the Fluxus movement created works that blurred the distinction between art and life and denounced the gallery’s formalities. Everyday acts could be works of art, and many of the works could not be restaged or reproduced in full. Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece, in which the artist sat on a stage with a pair of scissors and invited audience members to take turns cutting off her clothing, blurred the relationship between the viewer and the art, and threw into question any sort of neutrality.
The land-art movement of the ’60s and ’70s saw artists sculpt the earth to create large-scale works, like Robert Smithson’s 1,500-ft.-long Spiral Jetty made of salt crystals, water, and basalt rock on Utah’s Great Salt Lake, that inherently held their creators’ anti-commercial politics: other than in photographs, there was no way for the massive pieces to exist within four walls. The “earthworks” made during this period were the antithesis of what the white cube represented; rather than existing in a void that nullified the outside world, these works were the outside world.
As galleries have shuttered during social distancing and stay-at-home orders, this spirit of creativity, if not outright anti-establishment thinking, has informed new relationships between art and viewers. From video games to snail mail, the examples below are just a few of the ways artists and museums have seized upon this difficult moment to prove, yet again, that possibilities for interacting with art are as wide open as a room is closed.
A Miniature Gallery
Courtesy of Shelter In Place GalleryB. Chehayeb’s abstract paintings on display in the miniature Shelter in Place Gallery
On March 27, artist Eben Haines launched Shelter in Place Gallery, a miniature display room that allows artists to create small-scale works that appear larger when photographed and shared on Instagram. After reviewing artists’ submissions of sample images and proposals over email, Haines and his partner Delaney Dameron ask the selected artists to drop off or mail them their work. Then they install and photograph each tiny solo art show, which lasts for less than a week.
“The fact that the space is miniature, and that the viewer understands that it is a fabrication, means that they end up looking closely at details: the masonry and the conduit and poorly placed outlets, the water stains where the skylight has leaked,” explains Haines.
For artists who don’t have access to their studios now, creating small works is far more feasible than what their usual work might entail. They’re “able to make more ambitious work than they could ever afford to at scale, let alone have shown in a commercial gallery,” says Haines, referencing the prohibitively high cost of real estate for urban galleries that might otherwise show more large-scale works.
Exhibited artists include B. Chehayeb (whose work is shown above), who makes paintings of abstracted memories of growing up Mexican American, as well as Mary Pedicini, who created a mixed-media room installation that hung from the beams.“ Hopefully,” Haines says, “we allow people to make the work they’ve always wanted to make.”
Video-Game Curation
Courtesy of Sarah WaldorfThe Getty’s Animal Crossing Art Generator tool allows players to import works from the museum’s open-access catalog
In 2020, you can have your very own Claude Monet or Vincent van Gogh—or at least a pixelated version hanging above the stove in your virtual kitchen. With the Los Angeles–based Getty Museum’s Animal Crossing Art Generator tool, players of the highly popular Nintendo game—in which users design a whimsical island world while befriending the animals that inhabit it—can search through the museum’s open-access collection and import images into their game. Then, players can display each work however they choose: on a wall; on a piece of clothing; or even in their own galleries, which friends who are also playing the game can visit virtually.
Bringing works of art into a video game and inserting them into a fictional world changes their contexts entirely, making them playful, moldable items. Players, in a sense, become curators. “It doesn’t just give users access to our collections, but it allows them to shape the museum experience for themselves,” says Selina Chang-Yi Zawacki, a software engineer at the Getty who developed the project. “In general, the typical museum experience is very rigid. It’s set up for you; there’s a flow you have to follow—but with this tool, you can make it whatever you want.”
Some users have chosen to print out the digitized versions of their chosen works, bringing the digital back into the physical world. The Art History Undergraduate Association at the University of California, Irvine, even used the tool to add works to a virtual art show honoring the opening of a canceled campus exhibition.
Mail Art
Courtesy of Julie Sola and Jason BrownMore than 350 participants sent their works to Nashville for Brown’s “my view from home” mail-art project
The decades-old populist art practice commonly known as mail art or postal art has seen a revival in recent months. The rules are simple: all one has to do is make a small work of art of any kind (drawing, collage, poem, etc.) that can fit into an envelope and send it through the mail to another correspondent.
Dada artist Marcel Duchamp, Fluxus artist On Kawara and many others practiced the form in the late 20th century. The movement gained prominence in the 1950s, when Ray Johnson, who wanted to rebuke the gallery system, encouraged his network of acquaintances as well as strangers to share work through the mail. Johnson would send templates that had copies of his own drawings with prompts, like “Please add hair to Cher,” to correspondents, who would add their own mark to the mailings before returning them to him or forwarding them to someone else. The project eventually became known as the New York Correspondence School.
Since stay-at-home orders took effect, several mail-art projects have emerged. For one such project, Nashville-based art collector and curator Jason Brown has been holding an open call called “my view from home.” The initiative invites people everywhere to send in their works, which Brown collects and posts to the project’s website and Instagram account. After the submission period is over, Brown plans to donate the mailings to the Special Collections at Vanderbilt University Library in Nashville. According to Brown, he’s received more than 350 works from 27 countries, including India, Cuba and Germany. “It expands the notion of what an artist is. Mail artists come from all walks of life; most are not professional artists,” says Brown. “All you need is your imagination and a stamp.”
Jason Pickleman, a Chicago-based graphic designer and gallerist, held a mail-art exhibition over Instagram Live and plans on divvying up the 600 artworks he’s received in the mail into smaller groups that can be mailed out as “as a lending library to anyone interested in experiencing the collection.” The project, titled “MAILL” (Mail Art Inventory Lending Library), aims to create “a museum from your mailbox,” as Pickleman puts it, and allows for art viewing to become a more tactile and intimate experience. Plus, according to Pickleman, it’s nice to open your mail and discover artwork rather than utility bills or mail-order catalogs.
“Drive-By” Exhibits
Courtesy of Toni Ross and Sara SalawayIn a “Drive-by-Art” show in New York, Toni Ross and Sara Salaway exhibited When, a social-isolation “calendar” of jumbled chairs with date-related words
Organized by Los Angeles–based conceptual artist and theorist Warren Neidich, “Drive-by-Art” is a unique blend of the physical and digital that creates a socially distant art experience. Aimed at bringing art back to its starting place, the artist’s studio—where Neidich believes the work is in its purest and most powerful state—his shows allow spectators to use an online map to drive past works displayed on artists’ lawns, porches and mailboxes from the safety of their cars. He came up with the idea after being sequestered in a cabin at the start of the pandemic; “Drive-by-Art” was his “reaction to feelings of isolation and disconnection.”
Neidich has already completed shows in L.A. and New York’s Long Island, and plans to expand to more cities and countries. Exhibits have included Jeremy Dennis’ “Destinations,” wood silhouettes covered in photocopied images of the Eiffel Tower and Elvis’ meeting with President Nixon. Neidich worked with local artists and curators Renee Petropoulos, Michael Slenske and Anuradha Vikram to ensure a diverse range of both established and emerging voices for the expanded Los Angeles show. “I was using the car, which has many functions in the history of America, like the building of suburbia, and was trying to give it another meaning as a place of protection, a kind of solitary bubble through which you could experience art,” he explains.

SWIMMING POOL SHADES
Many Ways to Cover Your Swimming Pool
Swimming Pool Shades Ideas Guide
When you think of a pool, it’s natural to think of sunshine. Pools are a hallmark of the summer months, keeping families and homeowners outdoors and entertained during hot and sunny weather. For more and more pool lovers, grabbing a bit of shade is becoming a priority. Whether it’s from concern over UV exposure, a need to find some respite from the hot midday sun, or simply to avoid a sunburn, many pool owners are turning to shade solutions for their pools.
Installing a shade structure over pool can deliver a range of benefits beyond UV protection and relief from the rays. Today’s shade structures can be great aesthetic additions to a pool, giving you a bit of ambiance and style. And with well-structured, large-scale permanent structures, you’ll also be adding value to your home. Let’s take a look at the seven best pool shade ideas:
Swimming Pool Shades Sails
Swimming Pool Shades sails are increasingly popular options that give a truly modern look to a pool. These interestingly shaped sails can be placed in an array of unique angles, giving a pool a very edgy and modern look. The downside of shade sails is that they can give inconsistent shade (requiring several shades to cover an entire section of a pool) and because they have to resist high winds, can be surprisingly expensive.
Swimming Pool Shades Pergolas
A pergola can provide ambient shade with just the right amount of filtered light over a pool. Placing a pergola over one end of a pool can also create a great, visual centerpiece. Today’s pergolas are made from quality woods and add value to your home, provided you know what to specify. Read our guide on pergola building materials for more information.
Retractable
"Swimming Pool Shades"
Canopies
Retractable shade canopies are probably the most comprehensive shade solution for a pool, capable of delivering reliable sun protection to an entire section of a pool with ease. These large canopies run across the pool along beams spanned between support posts on each side of the pool, giving homeowners an easy and very stylish way to shade a pool. The retractable option is a necessity. Otherwise, you might as well have an indoor pool. See more photos of the project above.
Swimming Pool Shades Umbrellas
Los Angeles Times Home of the Week in Tongan
Sometimes the traditional answers are the best. Freestanding umbrellas, such as the ones that have provided shade by pools for decades now, are a great option for those who want flexible and movable shade. An umbrella placed on the side of the pool can provide a modicum of shade for those in the water and out and homeowners can place them wherever they like, adjusting them with the movement of the sun throughout the day. The downside is they look unseemly when closed.
Swimming Pool Shades
Ideas Cantilevered
Weather Safe
Cantilevers are shade structures similar to canopies that use just a single support structure on one side. Support posts are driven into the cement around the pool; horizontal, with a canopy, extend over the pool from these vertical support posts, providing shade for poolside guests and those in the water.
Swimming Pool Shades Retractable Enclosures
Endless Summer
A large-scale solution that offers a good deal of flexibility and that might have appeal for many homeowners is a retractable enclosure. These enclosures are skeletal structures constructed from a series of arched trusses that nest into each other when retracted. Retractable shades run between each section of the enclosure, providing as much or as little shade as homeowners want any moment of the day.
Swimming Pool Shades side Freestanding Structures
For those who don’t want to shade the pool itself but still want a refuge from the sun, a shade pergola can be a good option. You can place one of these freestanding structures right next to a pool, placing lounge chairs and other outdoor accessories in it to create a relaxing enclave. Enjoy as much sun as you like on the water, then retreat to this comfortable and shady spot to enjoy conversation, relaxation, and even drinks with family and friends.
Whether you are looking for a lightweight answer such as a shade sail or a more permanent option such as a pergola, you have a wide array of options available to you today. Look for shade options that use the latest technology in terms of material, so that you get the greatest value and a shade solution that protects you from harmful UV rays well into the future.

The 60 Most Inspiring and Successful Shopify Stores http://bit.ly/2To0Kj3
Starting an online business can be intimidating. There are so many things you have to deal with, like how not to go broke or how to optimize your landing pages. But, let’s put that aside for now. Here is a list of 60 inspiring online Shopify stores.
All of them are successful ecommerce businesses. Each of these businesses carved their own way to success. And, for each of them, success meant different things. I’ve highlighted the greatest accomplishments, usually monetary, for these Shopify stores. Their successes vary from having high-end clients like Ben Affleck to earning multimillion-dollar investments and six-figure revenues. Hopefully they will get you inspired about your own online business.
Best Shopify Stores for Clothing
Negative Underwear
This company’s goal is to help women feel confident in their own bodies. They don’t want to rely on push-up pads or bows for women to feel sexy. And it must be working for them since this Shopify store’s revenue grew 150% just a few years after they launched. They have gained acclaim from big names such as Forbes, Vogue, and The Wall Street Journal for making a place in the industry and bridging the gap between functionality and appearance.
Unconditional
Unconditional’s website design is nothing but striking. It’s simple, yet eye catching. Starting up in London, this Shopify store is now 11 years old. They describe themselves as “a winning combination of the laidback and the edgy”.
Sir
This Shopify store is bold, it’s big, and it’s beautiful. With its serene photography style, it does a great job sending a calming message through the theme of the store. Located in Sydney, Australia, this store steals a place in our list for one of the most striking Shopify stores for clothing.
Bluebella
This Shopify store takes a place in our list because of their fashion-led luxurious lingerie and nightwear collections. Their designs reflect a modern take on lingerie. They claim to use unusual fabrics and trims to create stunning new silhouettes. There’s so much to say about this store and the subtle colors that they add to their clothing. Taylor Stitch

How Much Does Luxury Home Automation Cost?
Explore The Luxury home automation calculator.
If you straight out ask an integrator how much it costs to turn your house into a smart home, the answer will most definitely be “it depends.” So, if you’re in the market for home automation and looking for a ballpark price, here’s a quick and easy way to calculate all of the factors “it depends” on.
These questions for your consideration come straight from the Build a Budget Tool at the bottom of this article. It’s a pricing system calculator designed by the Home Technology Association that quotes prices based on industry standards. It is the most accurate, realistic depiction of what it costs to have smart home technology installed today. As you work through the create a budget process, this article will give you an idea what you need to decide on before you can create an optimal price range.
Start with Scale
What is your home’s square footage? What about the cost of living in your area? While inputting your home's square footage in the calculator below (a round number is OK)
How many rooms will need advanced technology of some sort? Having a good idea of not only what you want but also how much of it you need is a great place to start as you consider approaching a smart home integrator. For example, you know you want WiFi for your new estate but does it need to extend outdoors to reach the back patio, barn, pool, gate, etc.
Let's talk about wiring. What best describes your Homes Wiring situation?
My house is already “fully” wired
I am building a house and need all new smart home wiring
I need some new wiring installed
My house has old wiring, need all new wiring
Note: Prewire calculations assume you would like your home fully wired for ALL home technologies shown throughout the budget calculator, including 'future-ready' wiring. Prewire pricing can vary substantially based on what features you would like in your home. Wiring budget is for low-voltage wiring, not for electrical.
How about Wi-Fi?
None
Consumer-grade (is not recommended with smart homes)
Enterprise-grade (more secure)
Keep in mind that our modern lifestyle and our home's technology systems are extremely reliant on a quality network and Wi-Fi system. Most homes are moving towards enterprise-grade hardware and away from the types of products you could buy in an office supply store or a consumer computer store. We recommend that all homeowners consider the network and Wi-Fi system to be the most important system in the home. Click here to read more about this subject.
Plan Out Your Home Entertainment. Let's talk music
How many rooms would you like music in the two categories described below?
Include exterior areas too!
Higher-quality sound or higher-grade architectural finishes. (If none, just enter 0)
Basic background music. (If none, just enter 0)
If music throughout the house is important to you, it’s crucial that you decide the quality of sound you want as well as how many rooms you want it in. Consider that you may want speakers installed in more places than just the media room. Calculate the number of televisions you want in the house and consider how you’ll be getting entertainment on those devices, whether that’s cable, streaming, or otherwise. Don’t forget the outdoor amenities!
Now on to Televisions.
Price Range will include video sources such as AppleTV, a blu-ray player, satellite receiver, and remotely-locating them for best aesthetics. A basic soundbar is included for better dialog audio. TV's between 60" - 100" diagonal size - (If none, just enter 0)
TV’s between 32" - 55" diagonal size - (If none, just enter 0)
Do you want to centralize your video sources (Cable TV, Apple TV, Roku, Blu-ray player, etc.) in one location and have them viewable on all TV's?
This is called “video distribution” and reduces the amount of audio/video equipment located at each TV location / room.
Choose Yes or No
Do you have a dedicated home theater room? Please select a budget.
Pricing listed below does not include seating or room build-out costs.
No
Entry Level ($10K - 40K)This budget is typically for a 4-6 seat theater room with a 100" - 120" screen, a sub $10K video projector, and a receiver-based audio system with in-wall speakers.
Enhanced ($41K - 90K)This budget is typically for a 6-8 seat room with a 120" - 140" screen, a brighter, higher performance projector, and a higher quality sound system.
Performance ($91K - 150K)This budget is typically for an 8-16 seat theater with a 12' - 15' wide screen, high performance projector, and theater-quality sound system.
High-Performance ($151K - 300K)This budget is typically for an 8-20 seat theater with a 12' - 20' wide screen, reference-grade video projector, reference-quality sound system, and acoustic design.
Ultra-High Performance ($350K+)This budget is typically a spare no expense theater with the very best equipment available and acoustic design.
Do you plan on outfitting a room in your house with a surround sound system? Please select a budget.
A surround sound system creates an immersive sound experience, much like a dedicated home theater room, though in a dual-purpose room such as a Family Room, Master Bedroom, etc. If you would like more than one surround system location, click on the "Add Another Surround System" button below
No
Entry Level ($5K - 15K)This budget is typically for a 65-75" TV with a "receiver-based" 5.1 audio system with in-wall or in-ceiling speakers and a subwoofer.
Enhanced ($16K - 30K)This budget is typically for a 75-85" TV, a "separates-based" 7.1 audio system with higher performance in-wall or in-ceiling speakers and a subwoofer (or two).
Performance ($31K - 75K)This budget is typically for a 85"-100" TV, a "separates-based" 11 speaker Dolby Atmos audio system with higher performance speakers and a subwoofer (or two).
High-Performance ($76K - 150K)This budget is typically for a 75" TV for daytime use plus a 135" motorized projection screen for movie viewing and a theater-quality 11 speaker Dolby Atmos audio system.
Think About Security
Do you want a security and fire detection system?
Choose Yes or No
Incorporating smart security into your home is one of our most practical and convenient solutions. It goes beyond just alarm systems and cameras. Smart security means monitor your home, unlocking the doors, controlling garage doors and gates, and responding to the doorbell all from your personal device. Make a list of just how convenient and safe you’d like your home to be.
How many security cameras do you think you need to cover your home?
Here you will enter the number of cameras you would like to budget for. (If none, just enter 0.)
Typically, homeowners want to see the following areas: front of house, front door, driveway / gate, sides of house, and pool. If you are more concerned about security, you may want to add cameras for the perimeter of your property. Good-quality cameras see about 75 feet of distance on average. The high range of the budget estimate includes higher resolution cameras, better night vision, and longer surveillance recording time. To learn more about security camera option, click here.
Do you need a whole-house intercom / IP phone system?
Choose Yes or No when filling out the form below.
IP phone systems are great for business professionals who have IP phone systems at their main offices. This way the company can push an important call directly to the person working from home just as fast as if they were working physically at the main office.
Consider the Luxuries
When you think smart home - voice control, lighting automation, and motorized shades come to mind. Are you here for convenience, safety, luxury, or all of the above? Take a tour of our services to get the thought process going. The more you can hone in on your smart home priorities, the easier and more accurately you’ll be able to create a smart home automation budget.
Do you want a lighting control system for the whole house?
Lighting control systems reduce wall clutter, allow preset lighting scenes at the push of a button, increase security, and add convenience.
Yes, for the whole house and exterior
Yes, for the main areas of the house and exterior only
Only for a couple rooms
No, I will use conventional wall switches
Do you want any motorized shading?
Motorized shades add beauty, convenience, address privacy concerns, and can be used to save energy. If desired, provide your best guess on how many windows/shades you want to motorize. The higher-end of the budget range includes higher-end fabrics, large windows, and dual-roller shades (both sheer and privacy shades on one window).
If none, just enter 0
Do you want to control your house through different multiple apps?
Single app
Multiple app
No house control
For example, a house music app, an app to operate your TV, an app for lights, an app for locks, an app for cameras, an app to open close garage doors & gates, etc. Or do you want to control the house through a single unified app that controls all the systems in the home? You can read more about the smart home by clicking here.
Let us know what home systems you want to control on a single app.
Music, TV, Lights, Climate, Alarm, Motorized Shades, Security, Cameras, Pool/Spa, Locks, Gates/Intercom, Garage
Once your form is completely filled you you will get your budget range calculated. You can then email the budget to yourself and your local technology integrator. The Journal
While I was purging my computer, I found these old documents that I had written in what feels like a lifetime ago. At first the discovery of the continued existence of these documents horrified me and I considered deleting them. After some consideration I decided to finally do what I had originally meant to do with them before I had decided to forget about them, putting them online for the public. Despite the danger this story could impose on others I considered that many who read this will think the story fabricated which should help alleviate some of the danger in reveling this information. More importantly though I convinced myself that is was better to present the danger posed in the unknow than to leave it shadowed in its own mystery. To those who read this whether you believe it to be fake or based in truth this should be taken as a chance to arm yourself against a great danger that approaches us all.
I like digging through the trash. Which isn’t to say I dig with my hands and fingers through the trash. I just kind of look and see if there is anything of interest in the trash and if I see something cool I grab it I don’t normally have to dig. Honestly, everyone should do it you would be amazed at all the cool shit to be found in the trash like the occasional book, some fresh batteries, at one point I even found a new figurine although I think that was in there by accident. Mainly though I find some pens, pencils or unused/slightly used journals that I can scrap for school supplies. I haven’t yet stooped to taking food from the garbage yet and I hope I won’t have too, but that is unrelated to what I need to tell you. You see one day I took a glance into a trash can on my way to class not expecting to find anything because nobody had passed by yet and the trash had just been taken out that morning. That’s why I was surprised when I found a strange yellow military grade weatherproof journal. I couldn’t believe someone just threw away a twenty-dollar journal (I looked up the estimated cost later) into the trash, so I took it and hurried off to class. When I got back to my dorm I was able to take a better look at the journal and to my dismay found it full of notes. I couldn’t use it for school, but I decided to read the notes just to put off studying a little longer and to wait for my show to buffer. I will continue to put some of the entries up here, so others can figure out what some of these entries mean for themselves, because frankly I can’t, and I don’t want to be bother with doing so I’m busy with other things.
Just skimming through the journal though made it seem kind of disturbing, like a mad man’s notebook, but upon reading it I think it is just some creative writing students attempt at a story. I say attempt because it seems to be paced poorly with long entries seeming to be about nothing at all. The weirdest parts are the images of a strange box poorly sketched through the book. The Sketch is hard to explain it looks like a kind of Cube or something except its all gray and some of the pieces are sticking out. I will start putting up some of the entries the first ones are boring, but I think the author was trying to build up the characters or something like that. I will occasionally add input on the story to help give some context, so I will keep the journal entries in italics to keep it separate from my entries.
Date 05/15/2013
They brought us into a living quarter with six rooms: four bedrooms, a kitchen, and a lounge. This is just supposed to be a time for us to meet up and get to know each other. They told us to get the guards to bring us anything if we need it like they were room service or some shit like that. I think they are trying to make it seem like we all don’t know their true purpose here.
They drove us out to this military base in the middle of nowhere with a location we are not allowed to know and say we were just recruited for our expertise, and its all okay because the guards will give you fuckin room service. Its just fucking typical of the fuckin system to notice my expertise when it is convenient for them but to not give me any recognition for it beforehand. I’M A GODDAM HERO YET THEY TREAT ME LIKE SHIT!!! But I muscle on anyway because I’m a hero and that’s what heroes do.
They brought me in due to my experiences in programing, and they were right to because I’m the best. They also have a geologist, Humbert, who is a fucking asshole. Just because he went to school he thinks he is so fuckin smart. Zed said that if we stuck a rock up his ass we would get a diamond in a month could be worth trying so that we might get some profit out of this endeavor. Zed is the architect they brought in he is probably as smart as Humbert but not a dick. Had a few beers with him in the lounge he is a fun guy. Then there is Burkeman, oh I’m sorry Dr. Burkeman, the psychologist, he is the one who gave us all the journals and told us to write in them. As the commanders said Burkeman is our life line he is going in there to help keep us alive. He seems alright, but he also has the authority to force us to let him read our journals, at least for the first week before the mission. He has this power for our own safety, but if he is reading the journals then why would I write anything bad about him or anything I didn’t want him to know. In honesty though I have always felt having journal to be useful with both my work and with keeping myself organized, so I will probably continue to use this anyway. Just thought you should know Dr. Burkeman, but I still dislike the idea of you reading it.
05/16/2019
I try to recall the gathering we had this evening it was a peaceful moment and might be the last we have.
I was sitting on the couch with Zed having a good talk with some beers and listening to a baseball game. Even though I never liked baseball the beer is good and I have learned to at least talk like I enjoy baseball. Humbert comes in and snorts at us like he is a fuckin pig, I would guess he is half.
“Shouldn’t you be prepping,” he says.
“Chill Humpy” Zed responds (Sorry that is a says in the Journal, but this guy uses that word for every single dialog and I’m sick of seeing that word so I’m changing it from here on. Also, there are countless spelling errors I’m just fixing because I can’t stand them.). “Besides..” Zed continues “we are prepping getting to know each other like we are a team. Bonding is an important part of the downtime ain’t that right Dr. Burkeman!”
Burkeman steps out of the kitchen and pops open the beer he grabbed as he goes to sit in the recliner to the right of the couch “That’s right Zed,” says Burkeman.
“Well then” Humbert says and goes into the kitchen to later come out holding a glass of wine, he continues to stand though “if we are doing team building then how about you tell us your name Zed, your actual name?”
“Zed is my actual name. It’s what I go by now anyway.”
“No parent names their child Zed.”
“What does it matter anyway. We are only teammates for this mission we will probably never see each other after this op, so who cares?”
“It’s a matter of trust you know my name, you know Henry’s name, and you know Burkeman’s name I would like to know yours,” whines Humpy.
“I only know your first name,” Zed counters “besides I’m not sure Burkeman is Burkeman’s first name.”
“Its my last name actually,” Dr. Burkeman responds then continues with a sigh “So when it comes to keeping score for names as it is we have Humbert’s first name, Henry’s first name, an alias for Zed, and my last name. So, if it is any comfort to you Humbert that just means you are one of the more trustful people here.”
“If it helps Humbert I wasn’t going to give my first name either,” I point out.
“Nobody was going to call you Sup3r_H, man” says Zed. Everybody laughed at that, I was glad to help bring some peace to the scenario although I’m not sure if Humbert was satisfied. We then continued to listen to the game while making stupid bets like what the next commercial was going to be advertising.
I liked this whole story for some reason I can’t quiet put my finger on why I liked this story enough to try to memorize it. Maybe I liked the back and forth we all had there or the conversation. It was peaceful in an odd sort of way like a calm before the storm. The field is always hectic, and it was nice to have some rest before then. I will kind of always picture the guys as they were in that exchange no matter what happens in the field. I think I will tell this story to my girl when I get back home too.
Okay I’m skipping the next few days since a lot of nothing happens the next two days and the entries are uninteresting. At one point, Thomas decides to write a whole entry on the quality of his shit, I think he was trying to mess with Dr. Burkeman though. So, like my friend Mikey always says “On with the show.”
05/18/2019
They herd us into the general debriefing room like cattle. In there they would give us all a general idea of what we were going doing for them. Then they would individually brief us on our own assignments and what was done before us by the previous teams.
We were the sixth team to be sent to discover the identity of an unknow object and as of today we were now part of Operation Gordian (Ha, did the author really think he could slip an Alexander reference through so easily!). As far as they would describe the object was cube like and appeared to expand upon the completion of a scenario of its choice being solved like a sick sort of puzzle box. At current point it was 5 meters tall and 4 meters wide and a length of 3 meters leading to a volume of 60 cubic meters, and they estimate it is still growing.
They told Humbert something about it being a regenerative mineral that they would only now be able to get him a sample to work with and the tools to get more if needed. They said that it was discovered that the mineral was perhaps an 8.5 on the talc scale but behaved like a 4.0 on the talc scale when removed from its host. They at first thought it was made of perhaps a metallic basalt but recently have come to think that it may made up of some sort weird combination metallics or metallic by-product. Some of the experts believed it to be containing lots of iron and nickel like substances.
Zed they wanted to find out what could be the inside design of the structure or how it could be made and what could make it open. They said they wished they could give him more information, but so far, he was only their second architect on the scene and the first one was only able to discover that while it appeared to the eye to be a perfect hexahedron its measurement betrayed it to truly be a prism. The object seems to have some weird optical illusion the measurements being just close enough to each other in length to give off such an illusion. However, the object was much smaller when this observation was made though and they are unsure if such an illusion still exists.
To me they said that they had been able to connect all sorts of wires and devices to the cube. They are unsure of how, but they have two theories. One being that the material seems to form an appropriate outlet for any type of device. The other theory is that the material simply absorbs the end of the wire. While they have been able to seemingly connect devices, they have yet to be able to get a charge from the object to power said devices, but it has yet to destroy any devices even with its apparent magnetism. More importantly they have found a signal within the object and what they would like me to do is try to get a response and communicate with it.
They had no instructions for Dr. Cord.
They would give us the rest of the day to prepare and tomorrow they would send us in for three weeks with three weeks’ worth of food and after which they would let us out. After that we would be free to choose to stay and study the device or simply be free to go.
Zed asked the first question and only question “How come you think all these things have you not observed the object yourself?”
Their answer was that only field experts recruited to study the object were allowed contact with it. Comforting.

Design Tips for a Home to Match Your Style
Have you ever been in a store and saw a great piece of artwork or other home décor item but then said, “Well, it doesn’t match any of my things?”
When it comes to furnishing your home, a number of factors come into play. You might consider the elements within the layout of the home that might lend themselves to a certain style. For example, you may have raw-wood accent beams that might inspire a more rustic design. You can also furnish rooms based on your personality, the function of the room and the environment you’d like to create.
When you determine your style, you can make smarter decisions with your bigger furniture purchases and add stylish elements to complement the entire look.
If you aren’t sure what your preference is or how you’d classify it, here are a few pointers to help you understand several popular styles and how to incorporate them.
Traditional
Traditional design is inspired by antique styles before 1900, according to Justin Riordan, the founder of Portland-based Spade and Archer Design Agency.
This style is the most formal and often characterized by dark wood, floral or damask designs. You’ll find tufting, spiral legs on tables, rolled arms on chairs and strong pieces that aren’t flimsy.
The color palette is deep in color, such as merlot, navy, dark green, gray or taupe. You can paint the room after you select your furniture, knowing colors that are rich in hue will complement the anchor pieces in your room best.
To add traditional elements to your room, Riordan said, “You would want to make sure to eliminate all modernist or minimalist items in the room.” He also suggested finding antique pieces in lieu of more modern pieces.
Hesse Manual Recliner $280
Adeline End Table $94
Antique Copper 2 Bottle Wine Chiller $80
Turned Polyresin Floor Lamp with Natural Linen Shade – Antique Brown $80
Caitlin White Throw Blanket for Couch/Sofa/Bed, Luxury Super Soft Microplush Velvet – Burgundy $12
Contemporary
This style is quite the opposite of traditional.
You’ll notice a sleek look, often with wood floors, plenty of windows, tables featuring clean lines and furniture that showcases geometric shapes.
The color palette range is typically a mix of dark and cool. Think gray, white and black as a classic backdrop, using bright colors in fun décor accents for that pop of personality.
“Contemporary is things that are popular right now that have never been popular before,” Riordan cautioned. “The chances of these thing staying popular for any length of time is very slim.”
Allison Burgundy Area Rug $35
Thummepalli 27” Table Lamp $143
Apex Standing Sculpture $60
Osto Small Oval Rotatable Coffee Table Glossy White $143
Syre Sleeper Sofa $440
Farmhouse
Farmhouse decorating has become popular in the home décor world due in part to the success of the Gaines’ family and their show, “Fixer Upper.” Think shiplap, farmhouse sinks, loads of charm and anything in the Hearth & Hand collection at Target.
A few key elements of farmhouse décor are barnboard details, wide plank floors, iron accents and cute, vintage-inspired details.
When thinking about colors and finishes, think warm and natural. It’s okay to go gray but choose a warmer gray, unlike the grays you might find in minimal or contemporary design. Wood, matte black and brass finishes go particularly well with a farmhouse motif.
Throw Pillow Striped $20
Stoneware Debossed Dinner Plate Set of 4 $25
Arielle Arm Chair $160
Wonderly Pedestal Butterfly Leaf Dining Table $430
Tuscan Terra Cotta Vases $30 to $199
Mid-Century Modern
This style is a little blast from the past. Mid-century modern refers to styles and design philosophies from 1945 to 1965. A time when designers were intentional about scaling back to create space and functionality.
“Mid-century modern design is all about efficiency,” according to John Linden, lead designer at MirrorCoop. “The designers from that era wanted to create things that could make people’s lives easier by reducing clutter and opening up space.”
Mid-century modern design often showcases different materials (like metal and wood), little embellishment, rounded edges and clean lines. Color-wise, think of neutrals and retro jewel tones like burnt orange, teal and olive green.
One of the most popular designs from this period is the Eames lounge chair. It can instantly give a room a mid-century feel. Careful though – Riordan suggested using them singularly saying, “[An Eames lounge chair] does not do well in pairs. If you really need a pair, think the Wassily chair or Barcelona chair.”
Color Block Lumbar Pillow $20
Defreitas 18-Light Chandelier $83
Amherst Mid Century Modern Two-Tone Coffee Table $143
Mid-Century Metal Wall Décor Gold 36×30″ $55
Eames Lounge Chair $5,295
Transitional
Yep, you guessed it. Transitional interior design transitions from a more traditional design to contemporary. It merges the two by creating traditional looks with current materials. The result is something trendy but still timeless.
Transitional pieces utilize clean lines and soft curves. It’s not particularly showy, using few accessories and letting the texture, lines and bold art piece speak for themselves.
“Transitional pieces are very important to pull spaces together, think of them as background singers,” Riordan said. “You are glad they are there, but they strive to not pull focus from the star.”
To create this look, you could use a traditional piece of furniture, like a tufted armchair, but pair it with something more modern like a metal accent table.
“Look for lines, colors, textures, shapes and structures that do not draw attention,” Riordan suggested.
Tensed 9-Light Globe Chandelier $302
Vienna Twilight Accent Chair $267
Vandale Adjustable Full/Queen Headboard $429
Hague End Table With Storage $104
Samira Shag Ivory/Gray Area Rug $32
Bohemian
A far cry from any other style of home décor, bohemian design is unique, eye-catching and often uses rich, warm tones.
Natural pieces, like houseplants, wooden furniture and rattan are key elements of the bohemian style. Colorful fabrics and bold patterns draw the eye immediately, and they don’t have to match. It’s more important that colors complement each other, rather than match. For example, you could decorate a room with jewel tones or all warm tones. Mixed-matched shades and patterns are encouraged with bohemian décor.
While some of the other styles focus on clean lines and simplicity, bohemian design showcases intricate details, like hand-carved wood, beading and macramé.
Velvet Tufted Stitch Quilt $49
Handcarved Albaron Three-Drawer Dresser $998
Newburyport Beige/Orange Area Rug $53
Black Rattan Teardrop Table Lamp $50
Sketched Floral Medallion Tapestry $49
Minimal
Last, but not least, is minimal home design.
The main thing to remember here is that less is more. Minimal design cuts out anything unnecessary and black, white and neutrals tones are used more often.
Abra Landau, design expert at Fashion Furniture, said the “less is more” concept doesn’t have to mean boring. “It means getting rid of superfluous items that do nothing except drag down your space with disorganization and clutter,” said Landau, “Minimalism is about prioritizing only the things you really need.”
When describing pieces to look for, Landau added, “Minimalist furniture is simple in style while maintaining functionality, with sharp and streamlined lines.”
Andes Sofa $1,039 – $1,799
Extended Shoe Rack $80
Texture Color Block Lumbar Pillow $20
Entenza Wire Geometric Table Lamp $30
Square by Adam Schwoeppe Metal Clock $79
There are plenty of resources out there to help you get ideas for the style, colors and feeling you want to create in each room. Besides going to a furniture showroom, you can peruse home design magazines, search for inspiration on your favorite social media sites and more! You can also enlist the help of a home furnishing professional who can assist you in making choices you will enjoy waking up to each morning.
What’s your home’s style? Have you ever considered changing it?
