the fantasy genre having become this space where only white people are allowed to exist as anything from knights to mermaids while any inclusion of black or other poc denotes such a visceral reaction is, comment dit on, unfortunate.

several major fantasy franchises tend to lean heavily into a eurocentric perspective when world-building which ultimately causes writers to lean heavily into orientalism, anti-blackness, and different ways of "othering" people of color when constructing their fictional worlds. hence why we can draw so many parallels between fictional cultures and real ones, because oftentimes the former are caricatures of the latter.

#💭#to construct a world from a eurocentric perspective which has caused so much damage in reality #does not play into the fantasy bit because systems and characters operate from that viewpoint #and then we’re left with the situation we are in now #which is people getting unnecessarily angry at even a mere suggestion that a character could be a poc #because these worlds have worked so hard to maintain a solely white society #where the poc who are included are marginalized and/or villainized #or on the other side of it #turning a white character into one of color can wind up being more harmful #because already there are harmful stereotypes at play that worsen if that change is made #idek if this is making sense because it’s late and i’m tired but #moral of the story is: poc can and should exist within the fantasy genre #and there’s no such thing as any fantasy role or creature being only limited to white people #BECAUSE NONE OF IT IS REAL
