relistening to mag 170 - recollection
this episode never fails to make me want to cry so much
the way martin forgets and forgets, but only because he’s trying so hard to remember
the place he’s in has to work to keep him, and it ends up failing
martin has a tape recorder with him. is it jon, attempting to find him? the web, weaving away secretively, hoping to claim him first? some combination of both?
listening to this and remembering how, close to the end, annabelle says that jon and martin’s connection became… complicated. too closely woven even for her to manipulate
they call to each other. they care so much for each other. maybe they couldn’t save themselves, but all that mattered was that they were together in the end

Magnus Archives 170 thoughts after the cut.
Last time I listened to The Magnus Archives, I left off at #166 ("Worms"), in part because Season 5 was still coming out and in part because #166 was really rough to listen to (and, I suppose, the transcript was nowhere near ready yet).
This time around, I've listened to all of them except for #166, and as such realized that it's the point where I left off in 2020. "Curiosity," "Roots," and "Fire Escape," novel to me, are your regular listening, not too distressing or wallowing or slow.
This means I've now gotten to "Recollection." I'm not sure how Martin got separated from Jon, but he's wandering around in a fog by himself, talking to a tape recorder.
This one is the scariest episode so far because it is chillingly familiar: Martin talks through the same points (the fog, the nature of a tape recorder, the uncomfortable chairs, whether it's his house, what he can/can't afford) about 6 times: sometimes in an identical script, sometimes with slight variations, following the same train of thought.
And then he gets just enough clarity, enough knowledge to remember Jon's name and to recognize that he's alone, and to grieve it for a moment before that clarity slips away again.
God.
There’s always so much to do, and I’m always forgetting something. I do try, you know? I mean, I really try to keep on top of things, but I’m just – I’m just so forgetful, and she – she – Sometimes I wonder if I forget things on purpose. Easier not to think about them, I guess. Easier to just let them… slip away. They can’t hurt you if you don’t think about them; they can’t shout at you or call you names.
I-I-I’m scared. I think this fog is doing something to me; I can’t – I’m losing myself, and I – and I don’t know if I mind? Maybe I deserve it. So much of what’s behind the fog hurts. So much of it just makes me wanna curl up with pain and embarrassment and – Maybe the fog’s here because I want it here. Is that why I opened the windows?
So often, depictions of memory loss in movies or shows hit false notes: people who recognize their own gaps and loss too clearly, who don't repeat their script.
The fact of Martin experiencing the Lonely as memory loss is doing things to me that I can't quite articulate.
