as soon as she heard the gunshots, scarlett immediately ran to where she and ellie had separated minutes before to look for supplies, with the bow already in hand and an arrow ready to be used, after all, she didn't know what she'd find and she always prepared for the worst. out there, they had to be prepared for everything, especially the worst.  her heart was racing, and that didn’t change even after she was reunited with the other girl, who apparently was fine, at least as far as she could tell.

The silence that stretched between them wasn't uncommon, the two stragglers oftentimes simply basked in the presence of someone else beside them. Emmet had grown used to Sarah being within arms reach, had become used to the days she had much to say, and the ones she was lost deep in thought. Tonight, it had seemed to be the latter of the two. Movement beside him has Emmet glancing up from his absentminded whittling, the wood in his hand taking on more of a wolflike shape than it had the night before. Brows furrow in worry as the woman shifts from her spot, and Emmet finds himself quickly scanning the area around them for threats.

He's cut off by lips pressed against his, slightly chapped but warm despite the chill around them. Eyes flutter halfway closed just as she pulls away, his hand coming up without a second thought to sink into the hair at the nape of her neck, cradling skull as he pulls her into a proper kiss, lips slanting just right over hers. How long had they been skirting around these specific feelings? Or a better question would be, how long had she felt the same as him? What had started out as simple companionship and then friendship had blossomed into much more. He had been sitting on his own feelings. In a world like this, it was dangerous to develop any sort of attachment to someone, he knew that and yet there he was, and there she was. It was almost too easy. When it's his turn to break the kiss he does so with a parting one and a small nudge of his nose against the side of hers.

That suited her just fine. She enjoys his company well enough, and she had long before she’d fled from that dark, dingy little surgery they’d shoved her into to work. It’s one of those nights where they’ve found somewhere safe to sleep, there’s a little ravine full of clean water that Winifred had boiled over a fire, and a moment to check and glance over his wounds. There was nothing in the way of clean bandages, so she’d taken a shirt she’d found in one of the drawers of a nearby house and boiled the hell out of it. It wasn’t ideal, but it would do. Somewhere, between picking away the old coverings, she becomes very aware of how close he is to her. She can feel the warmth radiating from his skin, and the slow heat of his breath against her cheeks. Winifred has always been a nervous babbler.  “You’re looking at me like you want to kiss me, John,” she jokes, glancing at him from the corners of her eyelashes. she would’ve jumped in on that honestly. had considered it, split second. protecting ellie matters the most to trish— she’s a child, and all children deserve protection, and trish loves ellie, knows her, cares very personally, but it’s proven moot when the kid absolutely knees this guy right in the family jewels. an almost delighted trish restrains part of a giggle and ellie’s the warmest she’s ever looked, and maybe that makes trish warm, too. she’s always been great with kids, teenagers in particular, because she kind of gets them. feeling unheard is how she’s gone through her whole life. “i know so. that was great. you have fantastic instincts.” she holds her fist out, extended, fanged grin big and wide. she’s proud.

Elizabeth groaned as she considered the battered home in front of her. It’s getting late, and this seemed like the sole place that would have to do for the night. Liz moved for her shotgun that was on her back; never would be safe. Infected could be anywhere and Elizabeth would not stand by for them to strike first.

The woman made her approach to the door, opening it, and poked her head inside, gazing at the dark room. Eyes squint as they focus on a short candle, wax building at the bottom., she closed the door and walked over, pulling a lighter out from her pocket and lighting the candle so that there was a light in the area. “There...” Elizabeth murmured with a small smile. As she turned around; she saw a shadow move in the parts of the room that wasn’t lit., she drew her weapon up; ready to shoot at any moment----no, Liz, be smart..., the brunette started her way to where the shadow was, her finger hovering over the trigger. As she came around the corner; that’s when she lowered her weapon slightly. It was a kid; a girl. Now Elizabeth knew she couldn’t trust anyone let alone children but... she couldn't shoot her.
