I will be honest and say that despite viewing it as an overall better movie than some 😒 toy franchise movies at its discussion of sexism, a sizeable chunk of lego movie 2's commentary on sexism begins to fall apart the moment you apply a more complex gender analysis lens to it. I'm constantly back-and-forthing on its depiction of wyldstyle's shifting identity and choices to change her appearance as chronic "not like other girls"-ism, that the hair color and name she was (presumably) "born" with are always depicted as somehow more authentic to her than her chosen identity.

Like..... its true that some girls go to great lengths to deny themselves the joy of their own femininity that would be truer to themselves, and that experience doesn't exclusively apply to cis women. On the other hand, its not like wyldstyle as she is isn't still pretty feminine even in her chosen identity, its not like she entirely eschewed being a girl, she just chose to have a different, less conventional style. So is it really fair that the movies constantly portray her style choices as annoyingly tryhard and ingenuine and symptomatic of internalized sexism? Her motivation for doing so, as far as the story is concerned, is usually peer pressure to conform to the standards of the out-group she is a part of. But it still is admittedly uncomfortable at times, especially as a trans person, to see characters casually disrespect her chosen name and appearance, and be generally depicted as in the right for it, or at least not actively in the Wrong.

It's really a double edged sword, for me. Is it enough that the movies justify themselves by making wyldstyle's motivation for changing her appearance multifaceted? That you could just as easily read it as a metaphor for body shame and shame around one's natural interests, or even that her rejection of her inherent femininity could be a manifetation of dysphoria in and of itself? Does the movies circumvent this issue well enough by having characters still respect Wyldstyle's chosen name even when they know her "real" one, and by not having her entirely lose her chosen aesthetics by the end? I never come to a solid answer. But I guess it keeps the movie endlessly engaging for me, personally.
