i have a lot of mixed feelings regarding trans headcanons in orv, or in general in fandom spaces because of how often its taking transmisogynistic jokes and bending them to actually have a cool and awesome meaning instead of just reading fiction with transgender characters. how do you feel about this as an everyone in orv is transfem poster (not accusatory tone i am genuinely wondering your take on this)
I think it's complicated because i Do agree that most trans headcanons in fandom are rooted in transphobic ideas, especially when it comes to transfem characters. I actually personally wouldn't trust most people who headcanon characters as trans unless they're able to point out when something in the text is transmisogynistic. and orv does have transmisogynistic stuff in it. the whole joke with nirvana and the entire scene with the pink kids is based around transfems being predators and men in disguise. I really don't want to hang around other orv fans unless they're able to point that out. (also, i would Definitely not trust anyone who refers to those characters as trans icons or whatever.)
I'll also fully admit that I don't remember the revolutionary arc all that well. at the time when I first read it, I just simply assumed that jang hayoung was meant to be a trans woman, and any issues kim dokja had with recognizing her gender was interesting because of how it tied into the metafictional elements about how characters can change beyond a reader's perception. from my recollection, and from the readings of other people in my life who have read the novel, it seemed canon that she was intentionally transfem. similarly, I felt like the plot point of "yoo joonghyuk has a female alter ego" was taken pretty seriously, rather than being a meanspirited joke. if I'm not remembering that right, though, please let me know.
orv in general has a problem in depictions of lgbt people. there's the abovementioned transmisogyny with nirvana and the pink kids, and there's also the undeniable fact that "kim dokja and yoo joonghyuk are gay but haha Not Actually" is leaned on a little bit too much as a joke. I have a similarly complicated relationship to the idea of shipping them for that reason - I think their relationship is meaningful and rich, but I really dislike that the fandom seems to just take that joke as an uncritical BL trope, rather than discussing how it's sometimes a bit homophobic. again, I don't trust joongdok shippers who aren't able to discuss this.
at the same time, though, I do think that if you're aware of the problems in the text, it's possible to construct a lot of rich meaning out of applying queer lenses to the text. there's a lot to dig into regarding how the story depicts gender, for example, and how it depicts transcendence and self-actualization. you can't credit the authors here - like I said, their writing has several issues with lgbt people. but as long as you aren't advertising the story as Queer Fiction, I find that it's extremely valuable to discuss how a trans reading might cast an interesting light onto a character. and on a more personal level, I think having these sorts of open discussions about both the problems and merits of trans readings, as well as the issues present in a text, do tend to make a lot of trans people feel more welcome in fan spaces. both are necessary for making a story and space that may be hostile towards them feel more welcoming.
yes, I do agree that it would probably be better to read fiction with better trans characters. those stories are out there! this is also why I am wary to praise singshong for jang hayoung's character - I don't think orv exactly Deserves a reputation as a trans inclusive story, especially when there's a lot more of those that are much better at it out there.
but at the end of the day, there are going to be trans people who do like orv, all the same. I'm one of them, though I will say upfront that I am tme and therefore much less affected by the story's problems. my fiancee is transfem and she likes it. a lot of my mutuals who like orv are trans. I don't think it's such a bad thing that we've constructed these community readings in a work we already liked for its other merits. we're going to be here anyway. as long as we do our best to be respectful and point out problems as they arise, I think it's a good thing that we're having these sorts of discussions.

Not trying to change your mind about the whole "keyleth ex machina" thing cos I actuly agree when it comes to the percy and vex (that would be cheep imo), but I doooo think it can be done well if it Keyleth..for me it comes down to looking at it at oryms perspective because yeah, he must be feeling pretty guilty right now so he must be thinking he has to do whatever is in his power to fix that burden of guilt (I'm not saying thats healthy I'm saying its real for him to feel that) and well.. keyleth is who he would turn to logicly.
as well as the fact it was hinted at that keyleth tried to save Will and failed so Kiki may even feel alittle guilty herself....not saying that keyleth owes him a dept for that but it would be a nice to sort of explore that and show rather that just tell us why he has such huge respect and admiration for his boss and to discuss those sorts of feelings of guilt on both sides. Just my opinion and of course your entitled to your own just wanted to throw my thoughts out there so thanks for listening.
I see your point and I don't disagree! I really have no problems with the in-character decision to reach out to Keyleth. She is one of the most powerful known people in the world and Orym has a direct line to her- other than keeping from bothering her and Orym self-identifying as "just some guy/guard" to her, he really has no reason not to contact her, especially in a situation this dire. I agree that going to the de Rolos is more of a stretch as none of them even know the de Rolos (not even Laudna).
My problem with the C1 tie-ins has nothing to do with in-character decisions, but more of a meta level of- are they necessary? Are they detracting from (my) enjoyment of the campaign? Could the story exist without them? And in this case specifically, is the inclusion of these ties making what would typically be a difficult task easy?
I'll probably go more in depth on this later today or this weekend because I'm getting multiple asks about this topic but the tldr on this one is that I get you and my gripe is slightly off center from your point.
#as mentioned last night i want and expect laudna to come back. while orym felt like he could be a permadead character laudna i think has#too much reason to come back not to. she was ALREADY undead. she can do it again#but conceptually calling up keyleth and going 'yooooooo can you res?' is a little cheap to me no matter how in character the choice is#(and yes the on the noseness of marisha healing marisha is just a little extra eye roll jab for me personally)#cr spoilers#ask#anonymous

*Important FAQ*
Aka questions that pertain to what I usually post about or stuff I donât like getting asks about but continue to get asks about regardless.
[Insert any invasive question about my ethnicity/race]
Iâm Ghanaian American. My parents were born in Ghana and I was born here in the US. Iâve seen it more on twitter and tumblr, but Black Africans donât like me because Iâm American, and black Americans donât like me because Iâm African. So Iâm stuck in the middle lmao. Iâm what youâd consider a First-Generation African, my parents are Continental Africans, and if I have children, they will be considered Generational African Americans.
First Generation African: A black person born in the US to parents who were born in Africa
Generational African American: A black person born in the US to US-born black parent(s)
Continental African: A black person born in Africa to parents who were also born in Africa
Non is just a prefix, black people donât have a monopoly on the term! I suppose you think nonbinary people are racist huh?
Yeah sure it wasnt coined by black people but the context itâs currently used as was predominantly used by black people. ALL people who are not black benefit from and contribute to antiblackness, even if they are marginalized themselves. That kind of dynamic doesnt exist in other contexts (unless weâre talking about transfem + transmisogyny, but thatâs something youâd have to talk to someone who is transfem about. Plus they have their own word for ânon-transfemâ). Using it in contexts outside of antiblackness is appropriative (Yall are annoying as fuck with the ânon-aspecâ ânon-lesbianâ(this term also has anti-bi roots btw) ânon-biâ shit etc, stop it. You also canât complain about the âreplacement termsâ lumping yall with oppressors when ânon-xâ does the exact same thing youâre so worried about. âCisâ puts cis gays with cis hets, cis disabled people with cis abled people, cis white people with cis poc, I could go on.)Â
Plus weâre talking about marginalized groups here. Black people are a marginalized group. Binary people as a whole are not so the term nonbinary isnât appropriate at all.  I dont take issue with terms like ânonamericanâ or ânonwhiteâ because (obviously) whites + americans as a whole arenât oppressed for being white or american.
Basically using "non-xâ in contexts to talk about oppression bad, everything else good.
Follow up: If we canât use non-[marginalized group], what can we use instead?
There are other words to describe the people youâre talking about
non-transfem- TME
non-LGBT- cishet, or people who arenât LGBT
non-trans - cis
Black people donât have a monopoly on the acronym nb! Iâll call myself nb if I want to!
At this point I dont really care, go on your antiblack crusade elsewhere and out of my inbox, Iâm always gonna mean nonblack when I use the acronym nb.Â
And yes, youâre antiblack as fuck if you think black people telling you ânbâ stands for ânonblackâ is the same as exclusionists claiming âaspecâ is for autistic people.
Is x AAVE?
I have a tag dedicated to what is and is not aave and how harmful it is for nonblacks to use aave given its history. I know some things overlap with southern culture but others are specifically for black people. A lot of âstan twitterâ language/slang is just repackaged AAVE. No, I canât tell you how to stop using AAVE. Donât tell me youâre going to try to stop using AAVE, I donât want to hear it.
Why donât you like the n-word being compared to LGBT slurs?
Race and Sexuality/Gender arenât comparable topics because each deals with a different history of oppression. I donât care about slur discourse that much because I donât even use/reclaim any myself except the n-word.
I have a problem with nonblack LGBT people co-opting black culture and struggle(like they always do), especially for trivial online discourse.
And to be honest it goes deeper than slur discourse. Every other day someone is weaponizing the oppression of black trans women, or comparing âcishet aces/arosâ in the LGBT community to white/nonblack people invading black spaces (you know, something that ACTUALLY takes resources away from the people who need it, see the cultural appropriation of Black African and Blac American culture in literally any nonblack community while black people get demonized for said culture), or tokenizing their black friends to get away with something blatantly racist. And thatâs not even getting into how a lot of gay slang/stan culture is just repurposed AAVE/black culture.
And Iâm not gonna lie, Iâve seen this more with exclusionist accounts than inclus accounts, but itâs still not excusable for inclus to do that either. We get erased as black gay/trans/queer/aspec people up until itâs time for discourse accounts to bring us up to one-up each other
Can you give me advice on x?
Most likely not, because Iâm not an expert or an advice blog. Iâll try, but don't take my word for it. Iâm also tme, able-bodied, not Jewish, singlet, etc, so Iâm not able to accurately answer questions about transmisogyny, (physical?) ableism, antisemitism, âsycourseâ, etc.
I might be able to give advice on school-related stuff since I just graduated high school, but remember that students are not a monolith, and what worked for me may not work for someone else.
Can I follow if Iâm nonblack/a minor/cishet?
Nonblack and/or cishet can follow but watch your step, minors blacklist the #minors dni tag before following
Why do you hate Ao3?
*long sigh*
I don't, I have a problem with the fact that it allows racist and (frankly voyeuristic) pedophilic/abusive/incestuous content to exist on its platform. Itâs a good concept overall, but the devs are complicit in allowing âunderageâ and ânoncon/dubconâ fics on their platform.
And there's the fact that they somehow need donations every year despite exceeding their goal several times over each year?
Whatâs wrong with Hazbin Hotel/The Ships/Vivziepop?
[WIP, as I have to go into extensive detail about this and I currently donât have the energy for it]
TLDR: Viv made a half-assed apology for supporting racists (one of whom did blackface [yes the mask was used to do blackface shut up] to mock black activist) and drawing gross content. Her current projects including Hazbin Hotel are full of anti-gay/trans/aspec (Angel Dust, Vaggie, Alastor), antisemetic (Mimzy), and racist (Vaggie again, that yellow cyclops character that Iâve forgotten the name of) content under the guise of humor. If youâre into that shit, whatever, just donât follow me and donât whine when I make posts criticizing it.
Whatâs wrong with Hamilton?
Aside from the fact that itâs very obviously glorifying slave owners and made people worldwide believe the founding fathers were good people, LMM, the creator, is nonblack. This isn't his story to tell at all.Â
Can you tag x?
I have a list of things I usually tag because they come upon this blog a lot. I cannot do catch all tags, as I have way too many followers for that. The closest thing to that is the âask to tagâ tag when thereâs something potentially triggering but Iâm not sure what it is. Everything is tagged as âx twâ. If something is extremely triggering, Iâll tag it as âmajor twâ
Do you tag slurs?
I tag slurs Iâm not able to reclaim at all (i.e., d slur, f slur, t slur) or slurs I can reclaim but are being used as a slurs. I donât tag the n-word, as I reclaim that one. I always tag the r slur
Can I message you about something/someone?
Unless youâre a mutual, most likely no. My DMs are only open to mutuals.
Do you want to be mutuals?
I donât usually follow back people who follow me, especially if youâre under 16 or post things Iâm not interested in.
Why is it important to have byf or about?
1) So I know gross people arenât following me. This is not up for discussion
2) So I know someoneâs not speaking out of their lane, which tends to happen a lot. (i.e, someone refusing to disclose that they are tme when discussing transmisogyny, someone not having their race listed when discussing racism)
3) Some people donât want to interact with people under 18 or over like 30 or something.
Yeah, yeah, people arenât entitled to personal information and all that crap but I have a serious problem with people speaking on topics from a place of privilege. Not to say they canât talk about those things, just perhaps add a disclaimer that youâre privileged when talking about these things and be open to criticism, and NOT blocking people of the said marginalized group when they tell you something youâve said was problematic.
I also have a problem with people who are intentionally vague about their age. Thereâs a difference between interacting with someone whoâs 20 and someone whoâs 29. I donât want to say itâs the opposite for minors but at the same time thereâs a difference for saying something racist at 13 and doing so at 17, and keeping your age vague makes it harder to determine how to deal with something like that. (Not that 13-year-olds shouldnât know better, itâs just I donât feel whole ass callout posts and receipt blogs are necessary for someone of that age).
Also anyone under 16, I can't stop you from following, but keep your interaction limited, please. This isnt an 18+ blog but I do rb suggestive jokes from time to time
I sent you an ask and you never answered it!
Itâs likely that
I never got it
You were blocked
Iâve already answered this or itâs been answered in my faq
Itâs a random positivity ask (which I appreciate but not sure how to respond to those)
You were rude in your ask and I didnât feel like answering
I forgot until it was too late, which happens when my inbox gets a lot of asks at a time.
You sent it to the wrong blog (I.e, sending asks about my ocs to this blog instead of @ochood )
Hey, the op is [insert post] is [someone on my dni]! I usually double-check myself, just to be sure.
Have you heard about [someone who is mutuals with someone Iâm loosely connected with]?
Most likely, no. And unless theyâre an immediate danger to someone or theyâve got my name in their mouth, I donât care.
Do you know who [x person/group/thing] is?Most likely no. Not to sound like a hipster but I don't usually keep up to date with trends. If I do hear about something, itâs most likely from twitter or Instagram.
Why am I blocked? Check here.
Why do you continuously move mains/change URLs/update themes?
Iâm inconsistent. And sometimes there are posts on my blog that I no longer stand by.
Can I tag you in posts I think Iâd like?Of course!Â

do you have any tips on bringing up ADHD to a therapist? I desperately need help for it but I donât want my concerns dismissed because stuff like adderall is heavily misused :(
i had like two pages of an answer for this (and it was coherent, even, if you can believe it) and then i refreshed the page like a dumbass so this is take 2, which is Less Coherent and im sorry but theres nothing i can do about it
so im not an authority on the subject or anything, and i donât know your situation, and also ive been diagnosed for like 2 weeks, so you can pretty much take everything i say with a grain of salt. what im gonna do is im gonna run through my own experience / what i wish i did differently / what im doing now, and i hope it helps, and you can totally feel free to come back if you wanna talk more at all once im finished!! and i really hope that at least something i say here is of help to you
also this is gonna be rambly and im sorry about that but i donât know any other way to be. im gonna preemptively forgive myself because youre like me so you get it but im sure itâs not easy to read so for that i apologize.
tldr: know concretely why you think you have ADHD and what treatment options you want to pursue, do like 3 times more research than you think you need to do, write down all your symptoms in advance, cite your past history of mental health treatment if you have one, and try not to worry too much. if your therapist is any good at their job theyâll know youâre not just drug-seeking, and theyâll recognize the symptoms and problems you discuss when you bring them up in the context of ADHD. probably youâll be okay, and youâll get the treatment you need.
so i spent most of my teen years in a drug-addled haze. i was depressed and anxious because i couldnât Fucking Do Anything, and my parents were worried so they took me to the doctor, and the doctor was worried so she sent me to another doctor, and this continued for a long time and i was on like 4 different antidepressants and 4 different antipsychotics and also some anti-anxiety meds between the ages of like 15 and 16. it was heavily traumatic and also not fun, and the reason all this happened was that nobody stopped to think that maybe i might share some genes with my dad, who has been diagnosed inattentive since before i was born.
right off the bat i should have been way more up in arms about self-advocating, which is something youâre clearly doing, so thatâs awesome and you should give yourself a pat on the back because thatâs really difficult in the mental health industry especially when youâre already fighting your own brain on most things.Â
hopefully you havenât been through a wringer of false diagnoses and nonsensical prescriptions, but if you have, then you can guilt your doctor a little bit. âi was traumatized! i was given dangerous psychoactive drugs during a critical phase of neural development! you have to give me stimulants to atone for your sins!â phrase it exactly like that, itâs like a silver bullet. in all seriousness if you ahve past diagnoses of anxiety or depression or anything to do with emotional dysregulation that can help your case, because you can point out that a) these things are common misdiagnoses for adhd, and b) the symptoms for these things logically emerge from things like emotional hyperarousal and rejection-sensitive dysphoria.Â
what i should have done, and what i think you should do, is write down your symptoms in advance, because then you wonât have to spend an hour hemming and hawing and trying to thnk of them all in the doctorâs office. i did not do this. it didnât prove to be a problem because my doctor was kinda irresponsible but i really should have done this, just for my own benefit.
when i actually brought it up to my doctor that i might have adhd i had a couple different things going for me. i was talking to my GP, and not my therapist; im not in therapy (which you can probably tell) because therapists creep me out, but i think physicians are probably more inclined to throw drugs at it than therapists are. my GP was also brand new to my caseâ i had never even met the guy before. i mentioned my history of mental health treatment, and i also mentioned my dad being diagnosed, and im also a girl (girls are chronically underdiagnosed and extremely likely to be misdiagnosed with either anxiety or depression), so i had some concrete facts to support why i had suspicions. i had also done a shit ton of research beforehand, so i advise you to do thatâ know concretely why you think you have adhd and what treatment options you want to pursue.
you might benefit from talking about it with your doctor before your therapist, but idk that might just be my fear of therapists talking. i think a doctor is less likely to want to taco bout it than a therapist but that may just be my specific experienceâ you know your situation better than i do. and admittedly a therapist is more likely to, like, Know You and know what youâre talking about when you say (for example) that youâve always struggled with emotional dysregulation, or whatever.
something else that might help youâ i wish i had done this not because i donât want to look like a drug-seeker but because i Miss Coffeeâ is to bring up non-stimulant treatments like strattera (for adults) or kapvay or intuniv (both for children but sometimes prescribed to adults) because itâll show youâve done your homework and it might be a point against writing you off. stimulants are usually the first resort for adhd, so itâs highly likely youâll end up on adderall or another stimulant, but itâs good to bring up as an option. might also be good to research it as a serious course of action, especially if you suffer with anxiety, because stimulants are likely to make you more anxious.
i would also advise you not to fixate on adderall? idk enough about your situation to know if youâve done that but itâs good to be open to other medications and treatment plans bc if adderall doesnât work for you it doesnât work and thereâs not a ton you can do about it. you should for sure read up on other treatmentsâ you might find one that sounds more appealing, or at the very least youâll know what to think if your doctor brings up another one unexpectedly.
so i brought up to my doctor that i might have adhd and he immediately plonked a questionnaire in front of me. i filled it out (spoiler alert most of my answers were âoftenâ) and he was like âoh this is textbook, letâs get you on adderallâ which like WHAT. i didnât even ask about adderall. like im not gonna argue with you but letâs talk about this first before we break out the stimulant medication. but iâve been on it for a couple days and no major side effects yet so maybe he was right who knows. anyway he was super irresponsible donât let your doctor just prescribe you meds at random go through the side effects. always ask about the side effects. i get such bad headaches after it wears off. i have one now and its Bad.Â
but as an addendum you should for sure be prepared to use other coping mechanisms. iâve started using a bullet journal since i was diagnosed which iâve found works really well, and youtube channels like howtoadhd are really helpful to me!! i try to use the meds sparingly because i Donât Like taking pills and also bc adderall can be habit forming, and because i hope to eventually be able to function without it, and i advise you to think of it the same way. drugs donât have to be a permanent fixture in your lifeâ you can use it as a temporary tool while you build up the necessary coping mechanisms and mental pathways to function without it. adhd isnât broken brain, itâs just brain on hard mode, if you know what i mean. i try to think of the meds as training wheelsâ i learn to function with it, and then i gradually learn to function without it. so idk if thatâs a useful way to think about it for you but to me it feels more hopeful than resigning myself to a lifetime on more drugs. idk.Â
but even if youâre okay with that, adderall isnât gonna make you functional (it might. kinda feel like youâre magically functional. thatâs how i feel right now, that is to say when im not headaching.) so you have to have systems in place to make it easier for yourself. some kind of productivity app might help ig (i used ike for like 3 days and then my phone died and i forgot to charge it for a week because that happens to me sometimes, but i liked ike!) but i like analog todo lists. feels good checking stuff off. either way is good though.Â
also get your phone to send you alerts. also rearrange your stuff. like, make the world around you conducive to your functioning. do your best to create and live in a space that enables you to do the things you need to do. get accommodations at school if you need to (i havenât done this and canât tell you how but there are a ton of online tutorials and you can probably just google your school + accessibility, or something, and thatâs assuming you even go to school)
but yeah i hope any of that was helpful to you and im sorry to make you do 1 million hours of deciphering my shitty informal writing style and i love you and i want to help you please come back and let me know how everything goes bc im gonna worry about you otherwise

su-critical and sorta referring to the lion-4 leak so skip this if you donât wanna see it
Okay, so Iâve seen people saying that S-U is more about characters and their development now more than plot. Thatâs fine, carrying a story really is more about the characters than the plot. Iâd say, and I think alot of people would agree, itâs alot easier to enjoy a story with good characters and a bad plot than a story with bad characters and a good plot. And S-U definitely had/has unique characters. I donât like seeing people compare filler now to the earliest episodes, because there is a definite difference between exposition and filler. This is a plot driven show, promising dynamic and developing characters. They needed exposition early on to introduce everyone, and show their relationships. But now, filler episodes sort of coming out of nowhere to develop characters (alot of the new episodes about Beach City residents.) They go beyond exposition to make us so invested and sympathetic towards these characters that either donât help the plot or only show up when they need to make Steven look as nice as possible. But the thing is, thatâs what youâre supposed to do early on. We donât need to establish Steven is nice and helpful. We know that. Weâve known that for a while. They were able to establish this with plot episodes where Stevenâs actions were driven by a need to drive the plot, not a need to show that heâs nice. Then again, Steven hasnât been treated the best. He went from saying to Lapis, âThatâs why we have to fight [Homeworld!]â to becoming⌠The same person but poorly written. I think Steven still agrees they would need to fight Homeworld if the Diamonds canât be reasoned with (but Iâm pretty sure this show is going to have Steven befriend the universe before another antagonist is fought.) So, itâs time I bring up Bismuth. Weâve seen all the posts; Bismuth was unjustly bubbled and shelved from the show. Know right now that I agree. I feel like Bismuthâs characterization, last half of the episode included, could have been fine if the episode ended differently. Heck, have the entire episode, just⌠Donât bubble Bismuth. Have her regenerate at the end, alone with Steven in the forge. I highly doubt sheâd try to attack him again. We donât really know if gems can tell theyâre bubbled, but Iâm guessing they can at least tell they canât reform and are trapped. Wouldnât Bismuth expect that? But instead, we see Stevenâs niceness and compassion in action, rather than him going âholy crap donât kill things.â Steven has not been faced with the idea of killing something. Fighting, yes, killing, no. If Steven had a different personality, he probably would have reacted in all the same ways. But since heâs written as this compassionate character, we could, and I feel, should have had this reformation scene. Like I said, I donât think Bismuth would have attacked Steven. Why? Because this is reinforcing the fact that Steven is not like Rose Quartz. Heâs better. Heâs different. We would see that, Bismuth would see that, and Iâm sure Steven would too. We could get Bismuth deciding that everythingâs changed so much, and her deciding to stay in the forge to think things over. But not before telling Steven all he needs to hear before he leaves. (remember that part? Where she told Steven everything he needed?) Sheâd still be shelved but at least not bubbled. (The worst part is that, if she returns, itâs probably going to be a reformation like this with the same development but itâs going to be WAY too late.) But instead of this, we get Steven Sulks and has Existential Crises: The Series. Was this all⌠Necessary? For one thing, it comes out of nowhere. You could say itâs been building up but, in that case, shouldnât we get an episode containing more than three (four if you count Rose) characters? You know, like his best friend who has a mom, or his three guardians that knew Rose way back, or any /minor characters/ like that (/sarcasm). Yeah, ok, so they want to say S-U has characters above plot. Then why are those characters ignored so often in favor of Steven? Theyâre interesting, theyâre complex, theyâre- being reduced to basic or out of nowhere traits. Weâve seen Garnet go from the stoic leader coping with loss but who still loves Steven with every bit of herself, to a fusion whoâs just serving to give Steven permission to do things. Pearl went from a gem with a complicated history and amazing training, to a gem who *knows better than everyone and is a gentle innocent soul*(their characterization, not my opinion) and gets at least one sad episode for each arc (unless itâs her own. Then, oh boy.) Amethyst went from basically an older sister maturing right along Steven, to a character completely ignored when it comes to Stevenâs development. As for Connie, she was helping Steven learn to accept his human side and motivate him⌠Now sheâs just the person that lets Stevonnie be tall and use a sword.
Conclusion/TLDR: Steven Universe canât be excused from having a poorly handled plot just because itâs âmore about the charactersâ when its characters arenât even well written.
Iâll probably respond to any notes btw so if you just want my thoughts or to discuss Iâm open

oh hey you have a submit page!
yeah regarding Firth/RDJâs âyellowfaceâ plotline, it was more like âis the yellowface really necessary for the plot? is it still okay if we changed the character to a kenyan illusionist so you have to use blackface?â
Oh and Iâm not the anon who asked about why canât asian actors play other asian nationalities, but want to give my 2cents:
while i think the perfect situation is to have an actor of the same nationality of the character, as an asian american, i feel like im asking too much. letâs take GitS for example.
i know that thereâs a few big name east asian american actresses in hollywood, let alone japanese (american) actresses. in hollywood, afaik lucy liu is /that/ asian actress, you know, the most popular; the only one that might have a chance of getting that role if weâre talking about star power, and she canât even compete with the popularity of other a list white actress. thatâs why i/we settle on her.
we settle with âas long as you look (east) asian, so at least i can relate & be proudâ, because there arent any big asian american actresses in hollywood (aside of her, and constance wu, and sheâs big just recently). its not like we dont care about the âcorrectnessâ of the nationality, but its because we feel weâd be demanding too much (asking for an east asian lead is already too much, now we want proper nationality? smh hollywood doesnt care haha)
you might argue âif your point is SCARJO IS NOT JAPANESE then your possible alternative should be rinko kukuchi, not lucy liu.â while this is true, but represented by lucy liu is a lot better than scarjo. represented by scarjo meant another lost chance for east asian to main a hollywood movie slash another movie out of thousands of movie that has a white actress as the main character. represented by lucy liu is a big win for the east asian community slash one of the few hollywood movies that has east asian character as the lead.Â
in the end having lucy liu is a lot better than any white actress. if itâs up to us, then we want 3 steps forward in the direction of proper representation; but weâre not the one whoâs making the shots; 1 step (as long as sheâs east asian) is a lot better than 1 step backwards (scarjo), thatâs why we âsettle downâ. but still, in the end we âlostâ, right?
tldr; represented by the wrong nationality >>>> represented by white actress, because at least itâs still somehow a representation for us east asians.
by the way, in your tags, if tw is trigger warning, what is cw? thank you for answering!
in the end im sorry, when i write a long post, i tend to go in circles, and repeating things i may have said before. sorry for the troubles & confusion!
âââ-
I have a submit I just donât publicize it for obvious reasons ;)
that said: I think that with RDJ it was necessary because otherwise the satire doesnât drive the point while CF seems wholly unnecessary but then again with RDJ.. I mean satirizing blackface means doing the exact same contrary of what blackface is supposed to be doing so I donât think itâs the same thing at all and like⌠if you wanna have a satirical movie where you show that blackface sucks getting a black actor wouldnât cut it I think because black actors donât blackface you know X°D
that said I 100% get your point but the thing is that a) people shouldnât have to settle and should actually ask for the whole cake imo, b) the point with GITS was that it was put as a thing going against asian actorsâs interests and likeâŚ. if itâs a japanese franchise and youâre aiming to have a correct recast then you should want the japanese actress, if your issue is rep in american movies fine but then say you want it as asian-american, because to a japanese it changes nothing if itâs scarjo or lucy liu, sheâs still not japanese. like, my issue is people saying that scarjoâs casting hurts the japanese but then propose not-japanese actresses, at that point say that the issue is asian-american rep, not japanese rep. which is what 99% of the people on here do, that was my problem X°D if they were straight up about it being an issue with their market without bringing in the japanese who cares, but if you market it as âI WANT JAPANESE REPâ and then donât push for a japanese actress then it doesnât look too coherent if you get my meaning X°D Â
that said idk if you lost because that movie wasnât a total box office bomb but it underperformed and they got more criticism for it at least in the us/anglophone spheres than else so I donât think theyâre gonna do it again if they get that kinda backslash, but like the thing is that when it happens people actually criticize it so itâs not a bad thing, it means people have more sensitivity to the subject. at least thatâs my two cents.
(that said sorry if Iâm butting in on a thing I might not have a leg to stand on, I think that itâd be great if people actually tried to publicize what media is there with good/appropriate casting, I mean for one I know tumblr has a hateboner for clint eastwood but gran torinoâs plot point was the protagonist getting to know his hmong neighbors and bonding with one of the kids and the hmong actors were actually hmong or sons of hmong parents emigrated in the US and if you look at reviews online while not faultless most hmong people who auditioned for it were ecstatic they actually went looking for them instead of casting from other backgrounds, and his letters from iwo jima was about the iwo jima battle from the japanese pov and all the actors were japanese acting in japanese and he prevented the distribution from dubbing it even if it meant losing money, and no one on here ever mentions those movie exist even if GT was a box office success. when marco polo was airing not many ppl were watching and on tumblr people complained that âthe lead was too whiteâ [âŚ] and then it got canceled, and those are like⌠THREE things I can think of, but I mean, some people try to do accurate castings and then get shot down so I think that other than protesting like in scarjoâs case, more supporting/promoting what is there would be more eventually proactive but likeâŚ. idk I think I saw four people in the last years promoting fresh off the boat which Iâm told is good asian-american rep but I saw all of my dash going hard on scarjo and people saying that since ânot many asians went to see black panther then we should boycott crazy rich asiansâ [out of whacked statistics anyway], you get what I mean? XD like I get protesting scarjo but giving money to products with asian actors would also be a better idea and would push producers to go in that direction, but I donât see a lot of that happening on tumblr at least D:)
also, cw = content warning, I use it when Iâm discussing a thing but itâs not⌠VERY MUCH IN YOUR FACE, I mean like weâre discussing racism, Iâm not showing you a racist person doing racist things, in that case Iâd have used tw XD I usually use both if Iâm extra cautious XD
