i have thoughts i need to write up at some point on the sociopolitical implications of the targaryens' continuing their marriage patterns for as long as they do as well as the way they use language to set themselves apart and what all of that means in the absence of dragons but i should probably finish writing alysanne and visenya and daena's biographies first

#tl;dr i think that the doctrine of exceptionalism goes way deeper than sibling marriage #and i think that sibling marriage is more of a means than an end on its own #tied in with the way that the targaryens appear to retain valyrian as a private language amongst themselves - see rhaenyra and daemon #being so much more honest with each other in valyrian than in common - and i think you start to see a picture of this family deliberately #making themselves Different and Alien to the people they rule. they actively resist assimilation in a way that makes their lives much much #harder when they don't have dragons to back it up.#and i think that once they didn't have that literal firepower anymore the fall of their dynasty was a foregone conclusion #the people of westeros weren't going to put up with the rulers who deliberately made themselves Weird And Offputting forever #without the scaly swords of damocles hanging over them #tl;dr the incest is a tool. the language is a tool. the dragons are a tool.#all of it is a means to an end of making themselves seem larger than life - they do it because it's allowed and expected of them #blogkeeping ( ooc shitposting )
