Shimeji Simulation really reaches levels of yuri rarely seen before (spoiler for chapter 46)

Like how yuri is it when you become a god longing for thousands of years for your gf who is lost in an existential void ?

im reading this super somber military girl doujin (might be a boatgirl thing) and it really makes me realize again how important a strong sense of aesthetic is. Especially with all the Goblin Slayer mockery currently going on, the art style and generic as fuck aesthetic makes the edgy parts laughable at best. The attempted edginess has no edge.

This shipgirl doujin though is edge concentrate but the art and aesthetic just gives it an incredibly somber mood that's hard to shake off. The writing is very nice too I guess. In the form of to the point diary entries that hint to you at something human and maybe even tender, but superimposed onto the coldness of war and death.

This DJ really reminds me of girls last tour in mood.  But, well, much generally darker and moodier. Not that GLT didn't have its moments... Meaningful. That's the word I was looking for. Subtle and meaningful. Dark and edgy things are much better with a strong sense of aesthetic / mood, and subtle expressions that imply intricate, complex feelings in simple, wordless ways. Kind of reminds me of the 9 Touhou Doujin in mood. Very moody and narration-centric, with an undercurrent of unhinged. Nice.

To die in June is the doujinshi name btw. Beautiful and worth keeping imo.

I like that the potato girls come back in Shimeji Simulation, I haven't had much occasion to overthink it in the way that those people on Reddit have. Reaching for hints and allusions in canon and seems like a little too much effort for me. I'd rather think of their cameos as a sort of retirement from being actors or leads, where they sell corn dogs in a long dream.

"Oh, it's over now." Final chapter 49 came and went without sparking much of a reaction in my head. Only after tkmz's comments in her afterword did I get to thinking about the contrast between the completed Shimeji Simulation and GLT. I haven't really fully formed my thoughts, not without a reread, but I'd love to hear your impressions as well.

Ironically I haven't actually read Shimeji Simulation myself, I just know about the link because at some point discussion of it became so ubiquitous that I kept stumbling onto it while, like, pulling up random manga pages online to check stuff during fanfic writing. (rather than walk six feet away to pick up the physical books) I probably will once this fic is posted, since I'll need something to help my brain switch gears before I switch back to urapi or Touhou. (probably the former because Kozakura still needs to shiv Satsuki)

I was talking to my dad today and by some circumstance the conversation shifted to the tkmz artbook on my shelf and he, in his blissful ignorance of what an anime is, really wanted to show it to his Japanese friends from work after learning it was a Japanese artbook. This was without me actually letting him look through it of course, because there are titties in there and other things unfit for parental eyes.  Though this would have been a horrible idea for both of us, the idea of my 54 yo white father trying to show a tsukumizu artbook to a group of Toyota salarymen is a pretty funny mental image

finishing the last couple chapters of Shimeji Simulation while on a train on my way to reunite with the girlfriend has to be the most thematically resonant setting I have ever read something in

This chapter is only 10 pages long but it is so fucking heavy, it has so much in it it is insane. It broke into my head at its release and won’t go.

It is a chapter about love and fear of love, about sex, about lockdown, it is yuri, it is about home, it is about comfort vs unknown, it is about mandarins raining, it is about that weird dream that I had one time that I wrote into a short story, it is about eternity, it is about ennui, it is about living plushes, it is just like NGE, it is just like me
