So I was digging into Strawberry Shortcake lore, and though the Strawberry Universe was later created/expanded upon by Muriel Fahrion and AG, I found the original "Strawberry Girl" art by Barbi Sargent (a freelance artist with American Greetings) (Exhibit #3 above) from 1978. It reminded me of Holly Hobby (pic #1 - created in the 60s but was a popular toy line in the 1970s and 80s) and also the Sarah Kay girls (top center), Sarah Kay being an Australian illustrator known for drawing happy little girls in polka dots and pinafores. Very demure. Very cutsey u_u
Got me wondering about WHY these little Prairie Girls were so prevalent in our toys, greeting cards, and clothing in the early 80s. I had a Holly Hobby doll & lunchbox and iirc my mom made a Holly Hobby Halloween costume for me (still looking for pics). My sister and I were gifted lots of little Strawberry Shortcake items (but that was probably due more to the ANIMATION SELLS TOYS form of marketing in the 80s). We had many a ruffled blouse and tiered skirts and lots of calico. One would guess that it came from the very popular Little House on the Prairie series, about a pioneer family, starring the very wholesome Michael Landon and child actor/activist Melissa Gilbert and based on the writings of authentic Prairie Girl Laura Ingalls Wilder. (Sanitized and Romanticized for TV of course).
And it made me wonder- Was this longing to return to "simpler days" a result of, oh I don't know, the rapidly changing world? The conservative push against the Womens Movement? Was this precursor to our current Cottage Core just people wishing we could go back to a time when Men were cowboys MEN and Women kNeW tHeIr PlAcE (and weren't fighting for the right to contraceptives, safe ab**tions, and the right to have their own goddamn credit card?) Were these little Holly Hobbies and Strawberry Shortcakes just... meant to encourage the Trad Wife life??
In this essay I will...
But Wait!
JOKE RUINED !!
!!!!! THEY WERE !!!!
"While the prairie look has its roots in the hippie fascination with all things Victorian and “natural,” I can’t help but think it grew in popularity partly as a response to this labor shift. Looking back at how it was sold, the prairie revival, ironically, appears to be both a conservative fantasy of “traditional” gender roles and a mild resistance to late-capitalism. Advertisements and editorials depict a “frontier” or country life where chores are hobbies and you spend most of your time sitting on wooden fences watching the sunset over a field of daisies."
"And for adult women, when you’re living in a culture that demands your labor but isn’t prepared to offer fair pay or equal opportunities (the Equal Rights Amendment died in Congress in 1982) the daydream of dropping out of a stagnant 9 to 5 job to churn butter and watch sunsets sounds pretty good."
"The prairie fashion revival, then, followed a larger trend of nostalgically romanticizing America’s rural and frontier past. But there was more to prairie’s appeal than whitewashing and nostalgia. In the early 1980s, women were entering the workplace in record numbers. A 1986 Atlantic article about how women earned less because they just didn’t want to work as much reported that “from 1890 to 1985 the participation in the work force [sic] of women between the ages of twenty-five and forty-four soared from 15 to 71 percent.” The increased visibility of working women in “traditionally male positions” was both a cause for celebration (1980’s second highest grossing film was the feminist comedy masterpiece 9 to 5) and anxiety (in 1982 that spot went to Tootsie, a movie about an annoying straight white guy who can’t get a job until he disguises himself as a “feisty feminist” woman). "
(some excerpts from the Dismantle Article "What the 1980s Prairie Revival can tell us about Cottage Core" by Sara Tatyana Bernstein)
Anyway, ok, maybe they weren't meant to brainwash us into that lifestyle but still ... >_>

Just got The Left Hand of Darkness from the library again and I like the author's note so much I'm just gonna post the whole thing
Science fiction is often described, and even defined, as extrapolative. The science fiction writer is supposed to take a trend or phenomenon of the here-and-now, purify and intensify it for dramatic effect, and extend it into the future. "If this goes on, this is what will happen." A prediction is made. Method and results much resemble those of a scientist who feeds large doses of a purified and concentrated food additive to mice, in order to predict what may happen to people who eat it in small quantities for a long time. The outcome seems almost inevitably to be cancer. So does the outcome of extrapolation. Strictly extrapolative works of science fiction generally arrive about where the Club of Rome arrives: somewhere between the gradual extinction of human liberty and the total extinction of terrestrail life.
This may explain why many people who do not read science fiction describe it as "escapist," but when ques- tioned further, admit they do not read it because "it's so depressing." Almost anything carried to its logical extreme be. comes depressing, if not carcinogenic.
Fortunately, though extrapolation is an element in science fiction, it isn't the name of the game by any means, It is far too rationalist and simplistic to satisfy the imagi native mind, whether the writer's or the reader's. Variables are the spice of life.
This book is not extrapolative. If you like you can read it, and a lot of other science fiction, as a thought-experiment. Let's say (says Mary Shelley) that a young doctor creates a human being in his laboratory; let's say (says Philip K. Dick) that the Allies lost the Second World War; let's say this or that is such and so, and see what happens.... In a story so conceived, the moral complexity proper to the modem novel need not be sacrificed, nor is there any built-in dead end; thought and intuition can move freely within bounds set only by the terms of the experiment, which may be very large indeed.
The purpose of a thought-experiment, as the term was used by Schrödinger and other physicists, is not to predict the future indeed Schrödinger's most famous thought- experiment goes to show that the "future," on the quantum level, cannot be predicted- but to describe reality, the present world.
Science fiction is not predictive; it is descriptive. Predictions are uttered by prophets (free of charge), by clairvoyants (who usually charge a fee, and are therefore more honored in their day than prophets), and by futurologists (salaried). Prediction is the business of prophets, clairvoyants, and futurologists. It is not the business of novelists. A novelist's business is lying. The weather bureau will tell you what next Tuesday will be like, and the Rand Corporation will tell you what the twenty-first century will be like. I don't recommend that you turn to the writers of fiction for such information. It's none of their business. All they're trying to do is tell you what they're like, and what you're like-what's going on-what the weather is now, today, this moment, the rain, the sunlight, look! Open your eyes; listen, listen. That is what the novelists say. But they don't tell you what you will see and hear. All they can tell you is what they have seen and heard, in their time in this world, a third of it spent in sleep and dreaming, another third of it spent in telling lies.
"The truth against the world!"-Yes. Certainly. Fiction writers, at least in their braver moments, do desire the truth: to know it, speak it, serve it. But they go about it in a peculiar and devious way, which consists in inventing persons, places, and events which never did and never will exist or occur, and telling about these fictions in detail and at length and with a great deal of emotion, and then when they are done writing down this pack of lies, they say, There! That's the truth!
They may use all kinds of facts to support their tissue of lies. They may describe the Marshalsea Prison, which was a real place, or the battle of Borodino, which really was fought, or the process of cloning, which really takes place in laboratories, or the deterioration of a personality, which is described in real textbooks of psychology, and so on. This weight of verifiable place-event-phenomenon-behavior makes the reader forget that he is reading a pure invention, a history that never took place anywhere but in that unrealizable region, the author's mind. In fact, while we read a novel, we are insane- bonkers. We believe in the existence of people who aren't there, we hear their voices, we watch the battle of Borodino with them, we may even become Napoleon. Sanity returns (in most cases) when the book is closed
Is it any wonder that no truly respectable society has ever trusted its artists?
But our society, being troubled and bewildered, seeking guidance, sometimes puts an entirely mistaken trust in its artists, using them as prophets and futurologists.
I do not say that artists cannot be seers, inspired: that the awen cannot come upon them, and the god speak through them. Who would be an artist if they did not believe that that happens? If they did not know it happens, because they have felt the god within them use their tongue, their hands? Maybe only once, once in their lives. But once is enough.
Nor would I say that the artist alone is so burdened and so privileged. The scientist is another who prepares, who makes ready, working day and night, sleeping and awake, for inspiration. As Pythagoras knew, the god may speak in the forms of geometry as well as in the shapes of dreams; in the harmony of pure thought as well as in the harmony of sounds; in numbers as well as in words.
But it is words that make the trouble and confusion. We are asked now to consider words as useful in only one way: as signs. Our philosophers, some of them, would have us agree that a word (sentence, statement) has value only in so far as it has one single meaning, points to one fact that is comprehensible to the rational intellect, logically sound, and- ideally- quantifiable.
Apollo, the god of light, of reason, of proportion, harmony, number-Apollo blinds those who press too close in worship. Don't look straight at the sun. Go into a dark bar for a bit and have a beer with Dionysios, every now and then.
I talk about the gods; I am an atheist. But I am an artist too, and therefore a liar. Distrust everything I say. I am telling the truth.
The only truth I can understand or express is, logically defined, a lie. Psychologically defined, a symbol. Aesthetically defined, a metaphor.
Oh, it's lovely to be invited to participate in Futurological Congresses where Systems Science displays its grand apocalyptic graphs, to be asked to tell the newspapers what America will be like in 2001, and all that, but it's a terrible mistake. I write science fiction, and science fiction isn't about the future. I don't know any more about the future than you do, and very likely less.
This book is not about the future. Yes, it begins by an- nouncing that it's set in the "Ekumenical Year 1490-97," but surely you don't believe that?
Yes, indeed the people in it are androgynous, but that doesn't mean that I'm predicting that in a millennium or so we will all be androgynous, or announcing that I think we damned well ought to be androgynous. I'm merely observing, in the peculiar, devious, and thought-experimental manner proper to science fiction, that if you look at us at certain odd times of day in certain weathers, we already are. I am not predicting, or prescribing. I am describing. I am describing certain aspects of psychological reality in the novelist's way, which is by inventing elaborately circumstantial lies.
In reading a novel, any novel, we have to know perfectly well that the whole thing is nonsense, and then, while read- ing, believe every word of it. Finally, when we're done with it, we may find- if it's a good novel- that we're a bit different from what we were before we read it, that we have been changed a little, as if by having met a new face, crossed a street we never crossed before. But it's very hard to say just what we learned, how we were changed.
The artist deals with what cannot be said in words.
The artist whose medium is fiction does this in words. The novelist says in words what cannot be said in words.
Words can be used thus paradoxically because they have, along with a semiotic usage, a symbolic or metaphoric usage. (They also have a sound- a fact the linguistic positivists take no interest in. A sentence or paragraph is like a chord or harmonic sequence in music: its meaning may be more clearly understood by the attentive ear, even though it is read in silence, than by the attentive intellect.)
All fiction is metaphor. Science fiction is metaphor. What sets it apart from older forms of fiction seems to be its use of new metaphors, drawn from certain great dominants of our contemporary life-science, all the sciences, and technology, and the relativistic and the historical outlook, among them. Space travel is one of these metaphors; so is an alternative society, an alternative biology; the future is another. The future, in fiction, is a metaphor.
A metaphor for what?
If I could have said it non-metaphorically, I would not have written all these words, this novel; and Genly Ai would never have sat down at my desk and used up my ink and typewriter ribbon in informing me, and you, rather solemnly, that the truth is a matter of the imagination.

📰 JTBC: ONF's Persistence "We Offer a Charm That's Different from the Trend"
Persistence has paid off.
ONF has recently concluded their domestic activities for their eighth mini album, 'BEAUTIFUL SHADOW'.
Now in their eighth year, all members of ONF have completed their military service. True to their nickname as a "home of great songs," their new song has ignited the hearts of K-pop fans. Their recent release, 'Bye My Monster', earned them a first place on SBS 'The Show', marking a significant achievement. Their sincere tear-filled acceptance speech, coupled with their stable encore live performances, sparked a lot of discussions.
Fueled by enthusiasm, they appeared on Mnet's 'M Countdown' on the 25th, even after concluding two weeks of official activities. They are now set to continue their performances in Japan and North America. Only showcasing the true taste of K-pop remains.
The robustness of ONF is proven by 'Bye My Monster', composed by ONF’s producer 'Hwang Hyun'. The song, a pop dance with a classical ambience and a strong band sound, incorporates the theme from Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 Movement 3, adding a majestic touch.
This album shines with the persistence that ONF has consistently shown. Filled with ONF's unique sense of longing and nostalgia, it has been praised as the epitome of K-pop. In a K-pop market aimed at short-form content, where songs typically last less than three minutes, ONF has released a 3-minute 27-second song with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Their choice of '안녕' (hello/goodbye) over a simple 'goodbye' evokes nostalgia. Unlike contemporary K-pop that predominantly features English lyrics, this song has fewer than five lines in English, reminding listeners of an older K-pop vibe. Listeners have described it as 'a song that perfectly mixes classical music and K-pop in three minutes,' 'this team has always done traditional K-pop,' and 'it's like eating homemade food after fast food.'
The members of ONF confidently stated through their agency, "While embracing a feel from past generations, we felt a grand charm that’s different from current trends. Our team's killing point is our vocals."
Recent music show wins and tearful speeches have touched fans and the public alike. What were your feelings that day and any further comments you’d like to make?
Hyojin: "I had a lot of thoughts and emotions. I really want to thank everyone who loved our song. I've seen many supportive messages and heard a lot from not just fans but also others who support us. Hearing all that, I’m motivated to work even harder and offer better songs to more people. Please look forward to ONF's future. Thanks once again."
E-Tion: "It was my first time receiving an award in front of fans, which made it even more memorable. I was moved by the fans’ love and shed tears."
The response to 'Bye My Monster' is heating up. What do you think is the highlight of this song? Additionally, what are some unique strengths of ONF’s music or the team itself?
Seungjun: "The killing point of this song, I think, is the overwhelming emotion it evokes. When I first heard it, it touched my heart, carrying a charm that spans all generations, unlike today’s trends. Also, the unique characteristics and abilities of each ONF member blend well, enabling this expression."
Wyatt: "I think our team’s vocal and powerful high notes are the killing points. Thankfully, many have said our music is trustable. True to our group's name, showing distinctly different sides on and off the stage is a strength of ONF."
Now that the military hiatus is over, active participation is expected. How do you feel about the recent album activities ending? Any plans and goals for the future?
Minkyun: "It was a fun time showing a new side of ourselves, although it ended too quickly. We will be touring in Japan and North America. We’re also preparing diligently for the next album."
U: "Concerts and album activities have been fun times spent with fans. Many listened to our songs and supported us with love, allowing us to conclude our activities well. We plan to be active in Japan and later in North America this summer. Since we couldn’t meet fans during our military hiatus, we aim to meet them frequently starting this year. Meeting many of our fans, Fuse, is our goal this year."
Can you recommend a hidden gem song from ONF’s discography?
Hyojin: "From our sixth mini album 'Goosebumps', I’d recommend the track 'Alarm'. I personally love this song. We released this album just before enlisting, so we couldn't promote it much and perform as much as we wanted. It’s a really good song, so please give it a listen."
E-Tion: "From our recent eighth mini album 'BEAUTIFUL SHADOW', I recommend 'Slave To The Rhythm'. It offers a different sentiment from our title song 'Bye My Monster'."
Seungjun: "From our third mini album 'WE MUST LOVE', I recommend the track 'Yayaya'. It’s a song I suggest listening to when you’re facing tough times or want to break out of the mould. I hope the fun lyrics will lighten your mood."
Wyatt: "After our concert, a track from our special album 'Storage of ONF', 'My Song', feels like a hidden gem. It’s as if you’re watching a scene from a Disney movie. I’d recommend it."
Minkyun: "From our debut album 'ON/OFF', I recommend 'If We Dream'. It’s a song that can help you fall asleep if you’re having trouble sleeping. It’s dreamy and allows you to further appreciate the charm of our voices."
U: "From our summer popup album 'POPPING', I recommend 'Summer End'. As the title suggests, it perfectly matches the end of summer. It’s comfortable to listen to anytime and provides healing with each listen."

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Scare Clowns
Say hello to Mr P, a funkopop lineage scare bred to of course look like the latest cinematic version of Stephen King's infamous character, Pennywise. I don't normally choose to support funkopop due to their over breeding of scares and low support for keepers. I've seen plenty of first time clown keeper's have a lot of trouble with these tough critters and it always ends in tears.
To help deter the recent trend of irresponsible people dumping their semi-aquatic scare clowns in local sewers, I've written this blog as a basic care guide for this fierce but adorable breed.
Are Scare Clowns Good Pets?
I hate to say it, but the short answer is a firm no. While there are breeders capable of producing lineages of docile clowns with scare looks, it's debatable among scare enthusiasts if this practice produces a true member of the breed or if it's even humane. Scares of purer breeding are for all practical purposes a wild animal.
Generally speaking, they don't want your atte tion, they don't want snacks, and they most certainly don't want cuddles. While individuals will of course vary, most scare clowns are highly territorial, completey solitary, and primarily they want to hunt and to terrify. It's just what they do and their raw personalities and high intelligence are what make them so appealing to their die hard fans (like me! 🤡💖).
So if you're looking for a companion or a funny friend, think twice before choosing a spooky clown. Except in very rare cases, you will end up heartbroken and possibly faces high fees for endangering the local wildlife and your neighbors.
Can Scare Clowns be Kept in an Urban or Suburban Setting?
If you ask a scare clown, they'll probably tell you, yes certainly yes. This is because they are hardwired to scare-- hence the breed name! They actually want to be in denser populated areas so they can terrify unsuspecting people and stalk stray ankmald easier. And that should answer the question enough for any sane person: no, scare clowns should be kept far from densely populated areas.
Ideally scare clowns do best in a large piece of land where they can lurk, frolic, and feed off of small wild animals such as rabbits, squirrels, and mice. Five or more acres of partially wooded land is ideal for containing a scare clown and also ensuring the land won't be depleted by their needs. Any smaller a space and you can expect to need to supplement their diet with store bought meat, else keep a very close eye on the dog!
I personally keep a group of scare clowns on a much smaller space, but it's lightly populated and densely wooded. It's a delicate balance, but as an experienced scare clown keeper I can just manage it. I don't recommend doing so for new keepers as you'll cause undue stress to yourself and your clowns.
Can Scare Clowns be Kept Indoors?
At this point it should be very clear that scares are not house clowns. However if you're like me and live in an area that is frequently dangerously cold, this may not be so clear a cut. It takes a lot of brave breeders and keepers to make sure that the population of scares out there are cared for and aren't left up to their own devices in the wild. What's more, keeping scares in a cold region keeps them at bay as its much easier for a young scare to escape and become invasive in a milder climate.
Keeping scares indoors during poor weather can actually help deter the worst of their nastier behavior. They won't ever be tame, but there comes a point in your relationship where they accept that you are just part of the environment and mean them no harm. This is when it gets really fun to keep scares as they will haughtily stalk by you while snooping around. They're a joy to watch even if the humor comes more from enjoying their sour moods than the lighthearted joy we expect from clowns.
Yes you can keep scares indoors, but consider it strictly a necessity. They should be free to come and go as they please, weather permitting. When stuck indoors, ensure they have their own space which is kept dark and quiet at all times. Avoid going into that space altogether. If you must go in, announce yourself gently and listen for them to find a hiding space before turning on the light and entering.
Lastly, be sure to pass by the spaces where they are at least once a day. Linger by areas where they like to lurk so they have ample time to jump scare you. While trapped indoors, they still need a lot of stimulation.
I hope that's cleared up a lot of questions anyone has had about potentially adopting a scare clown! They're a tough breed but they are clever, witty, and fun in their own very special way.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to comment, reblog, or ask!

REFLECTIONS ON THE QUR'AN: Sūratu’s-Saba’ (Sheba): Part 2
Among the jinn were some who, by the leave of his Lord, worked under him (Solomon). Whoever of them swerved away from Our command (by disobeying him), We would make him taste the punishment of a fiery blaze. (As-Saba’ 34:12)
Prophet Solomon, upon him be peace, knew some prayers and certain Divine Names to govern the jinn and make them work under him. By God’s leave, when Solomon recited them, the jinn came under his command. In fact, God’s Names do not consist only in the 99 Names which Abū Hurayra reported. In one of his prayers, God’s Messenger says: “O God! I ask for the sake of Your Names by Which You named Yourself or You revealed in Your Book or You taught one of Your creatures or You allocated to Yourself in Your knowledge of the Unseen (without informing anybody about it).”
This prayer of God’s Messenger, upon him be peace and blessings, implies that God may have taught each Prophet one or some of His Names Which He did not teach others. Thus, Prophet Solomon was possibly con-trolling the jinn by reciting the Names Which he was taught. In reality, it was God Who put the jinn and devils under Solomon’s command. This is clear in the Qur’anic chapter of Al-Anbiyā’ (Prophets).
According to certain reports from the Israelite sources which are not found in any authentic Islamic sources, Prophet Solomon hid those Names in a corner of his throne so that they might not be misused after him. Nonetheless, the Jews of the time found them and used them for their interests. Some approaches in the Old Testament can be understood to be implying this assertion.
Some of the recent movements and trends have added some ultra meanings and functions to Prophet Solomon’s use of the Divine Names taught to him. For example, some claim that pleasing evil forces or powers is enough to set things right, and, therefore, there is no need to pray to God. Others assert that evil powers are superior to powers of good; therefore, they should be pleased. These assertions and certain similar Masonic ap-proaches, many of which are based on Kabala, as well as certain statements that we especially encounter in cartoons, such as “In the name of the grey skull, I have the power!” or “In the name of the power of shadows or darkness,” are falsehoods that have no place in our creeds and terminology. Such assertions and statements wound the minds and spirits of children and distort the true metaphysical or spiritual realities. It seems that such falsehoods and distortions will continue until our true conceptions of metaphysics and spirituality are established.
Another point worthy of mention in this verse is that both David and Solomon were favored with employing some sections of existence in their service. Mountains used to participate in David’s prayers and invoca-tions, and he used iron and copper to make many things, such as armor. As for Solomon, whom God praises in the Qur’ān saying, “How excellent a serv-ant Solomon was! Surely he was one ever-turning (to God) in penitence” (Sād 38:30), not only jinn and the devil but also wind was put under his service. Prophets David and Solomon represented, respectively, the inner or meta-physical and outer or physical dimensions of the Truth of Ahmad—the truth represented by Prophet Muhammad before his coming into the world. It can lastly be said that Prophet David was a seed in the name of the inner dimension of the Truth of Muhammad, while Solomon was a seed in the name of its outer dimension. When the time was due, both were united in that most illustrious person of Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings.
God knows the best.
