Adventure Time-Come Along With Me Recap
The fun will never end it’s adventure time! Spoilers below.
After Sym Bionic Titan wasn’t renewed for a second season, a coworker told me that Adventure Time better turn into something great. Little did he know. Adventure Time came right when we needed it. This is bittersweet for me. My first review for this blog was for the season six episode “Breezy”. It’s still my least favorite episode. And the rest of season 6 didn’t really help matters. But the show bounced back, next season. And was still one of the best on tv to the end.
Due to a series of circumstances involving Aqua Teen Hunger Force, a lightbright, and the city of Boston, Cartoon Network got a new head executive who wanted to move the channel in a new direction. He greenlight a series of reality shows and launched CN Real in 2008 planning to move away from cartoons completely. This move was universally hated by everybody and cost the channel millions. Fast forward to 2010 had Cartoon Network premiering it’s first cartoon since the failure of CN Real. It didn’t just save Cartoon Network it saved cartoons. Cartoons were kind of fading from television. Nick and Disney didn’t have a lot of animated shows at the time. And there was a lot of stuff like Adventure Time at the well... time. It’s hard to image since how cartoons have built off it’s style, but Adventure Time really was a breath of fresh air. If we didn’t have Adventure Time we wouldn’t have had Gravity Falls, Steven Universe and so on and so on. It showed everyone that cartoons could be funny and smart too.
It did have issues. Particularly in season six when the show started to by its own hype. And the gave everyone daddy issues. And I mean everyone. Finn, Marceline, Lemonhope, Jake, Jake’s kids, Jake’s brother, Jake’s grandkids. But they did improve season seven going onward by grounding the lore and the story based on the characters. I think deciding ending the series forced them to address interesting lore points.
Speaking of the ending, let’s talk about the finale. It begins a thousand years in Ooo’s future, seen in Lemonhope and Graybles 1000 +. We join Shermy and Beth, who looks like a decedent of Jake and Ladycorn, as they try to topple a Prize Guard Guardian. They fail but gain the ire of a futuristic banana guard. The duo also find an old metal arm. Finn’s metal arm. The return to their house, which is Marceline's house. The two decide to find the King of Ooo to see if he knows anything about it.
The duo travels up a mountain to the King’s house, who turns out to be BMO with a crown and a sheet tied to his face to mimic a beard. Shermy and Beth look around the room breaking a lot of stuff. BMO asks them to leave but the show him Finn’s arm. BMO remembers his old friend and how he lost his arm at the end.
We go back a thousand years. Finn and Jake see King Man and Betty doing something with the unconscious Maja. The three disappear. They report it to Bubblegum who is planning a defense against Gumbald and his army. Both Finn and Marceline warn Bubblegum about the war. The show is framing them in the right but I disagree. Look, war is bad, I get that. But you gotta defend yourself. This isn’t a cold war equal power kind of deal. Gumbald is gunning for Bubblegum. Ask Neville Chamberlain how well appeasement works.
Bubblegum discovers a spy forcing her to launch the attack now. Gumbald, who knows his spy was caught, knows what she would do launches an attack himself. Before the two forces duke it out Finn throws a potion he got from Nightmare Princess back from that episode set between the island and elementals mini series. Finn, Jake, Gumbald, Fern, and Bubblegum are hit and trapped in a shared dream. Finn tries to get Gumbald and Bubblegum to talk it out but the two fly off to dream fight. So Finn tries to get Fern to listen to him, but that’s not working out for him either. Jake meanwhile, conjuring up his brother, goes looking for something in there shared minds. He finds what he’s looking for. Finn’s vault. Finn tries to explain that he has issues just like Fern but Fern insists that he’s the only one who angsted. Trust me Fern, Finn have angsted plenty, just watch season six.
Jake comes in with the vault and opens it releasing a bunch of bad memories. Fern sees that Finn does suffer and Finn and Jake are transported into Fern’s head. The episode does rush past the bad memories without much thought. But I get they only have so much time for the episode. They find that grass octopus holding Sword Finn. Finn kills the grass ocotpuss and frees his time displaced counterpart.
Meanwhile, Gumbald gets to experience running the candy kingdom while Bubblegum lives turning into a candy person. The two get a better feel for each other.
The five of them meet up at the beach. Fern starts to distagrate but Jake assures him it’s just a dream. They wake; but Fern is still disintegrating. Can I just say I love LSP’s “Oh no, there dead! Oh wait there fine.” It just really cracked me up. Gumbald and Bubblegum go to hug it out but at the last moment he pulls out the candy juice. But Lolly trips him and it spills all over Gumbald turning him back into punchbowl, saving Bubblegum. Guys, I feel so validated.
We cut back to the future and Beth thinks that BMO meant the end of the war, but no BMO meant the end of Ooo. Because as soon Aunt Lolly and Bubblegum makes peace, King Man comes crashing down, telling everyone he donked up. Bad. The chaos demon Golb comes down with an unconscious Maja and Betty in a trance. Somewhere deep in Ice King, Simon flashes back to him and Betty discussing GOLB. Back in the present, GOLB turns a bunch of people into a giant monster. The army Gumbald had recruited flees. Boy they were pointless to bring back. Bubblegum turns to the banana guards. She asks them if the will obey her orders. When the yes, she orders them to run away for their lives. Which they do.
King Man and Finn bring Ice King to Betty hoping he can snap her out of trance. Ice King sings the Fiona song. We never got an answer for that Fiona transmision plot line did we? Betty is not happy but that frees Maja who laugh at her chance of revenge. She is promptly overloaded by GOLB’s power and explodes. GOLB than eats Betty, Ice King, and Finn. Biting off Finn’s robot arm in the process.
The monster goes on a rampage and smashes Bubblegum, sending Marceline into a rage. She knocks back the monster and attend to Bonnie. After the two talk, the girlfriends kiss. Good for them. It was never my ship but it was a huge part of the fandom and they deserve to be canon.
Jake fights the monster, who smashes the tree house and BMO’s face. BMO picks up a smashed tiny Jake and sings ‘Time Adventure’ the last song Rebecca Sugar wrote for the show. While singing the monster couldn’t attack them. Bubblegum realizes that creatures of GOLB are creatures of disharmony. And thus are hurt by harmony. So the cast begins to sing.
Meanwhile, trapped in his stomach, Betty and Simon are reverted to their premagic selves. The crown itself also switches to it’s prewish state. Betty and Simon are finally reunited, only to have to face of death. Finn fruitlessly punches the walls. But the song gets through and opens up GOLB’s stomach. Simon and Finn escape while Betty ops to stay behind to use the wish crown. She wishes for what she always wanted, Simon safe. Betty fuses with GOLB and disappears. The crown falls with a clang. I feel the show was a little harsh towards Betty’s quest to save Simon. It’s not her fault that Magic Man transferred his insanity into her.
Gunther picks up the Ice King’s crown and Jake reminders everyone that Gunther is a powerful space demon. But the crown just turns him into a smaller version of the Ice King head from the Garybales episode. Fern distagrates for real and Finn and Jake planet him were the tree house was.
BKO finishes his story. Beth and Shermy thought it was a story about the end of Ooo. BMO tells them it was. They asked what happened to everyone. BMO says they lived their lives. As the two leave and giant Sweet P can be seen walking in the background. They walk to the giant tree and Sherny pulls the Finn sword at of the top.
We cut back to Finn and Jake at the song hole, who sings the ending theme. We see flashes of everyone. Gunther marries Turtle Princess. LSP is crowned queen of Lumpy Space, Simon tries to find Betty, Marceline and Bubblegum cuddling on the couch, Susan and Frieda are still exploring, and Minerva leading the humans to Ooo.
I am bummed that we didn’t get anything with Finn and Huntress Wizard. I thought they worked as a couple and we spent a good chunk of the series dealing with Finn’s love life and would have liked some resolution to that. Also, why are the candy people in stasis in the future?
I think the final episode could have used another 15 minutes to flesh some stuff out. Other than that it was a great ending. I was a little worried we were gonna get a bad or strange ending, but I was happily wrong. It was bittersweet in some ways but did right by most of the main cast.
3 ½ out of 4

DB: Gurren Lagann vs GaoGaiGar
^ Image from here
Fighting Spirits and Courage. Two mens who faces greatest threats to the universe and continue to fight to save the their home and humanity. The ”King of Braves“ GaoGaiGar pilot by Guy and the “Super Ultra Combining” Gurren Lagann pilot by Simon. I want to make a info if one day if theses two powerful fighter will be one day to entering a Death Battle.
(May contain language)
Gurren Lagann:
Deep in space in the past there’s been an Anti-Spiral War between the Anti Spiral and the Spiral Warriors which fail as one of the Spiral Warrior turn his back on his team and comes back to Earth naming himself the Spiral King as the Beastmen rule the surface. Many years past as furries rule the top and humans living underground like mole and with moles too. Till that day is change when a young boy name Simon the Driller (or Digger?) have found a mysterious key and a robot face known as Lagann. Along with his brother Kamina who lead a group Team Gurren (later name Team Dai Gurren) who he said the surface exist which him and Simon day change as a mecha known as Gunmen crash to their town and Simon take Kamina and a hot sniper chick with them to ride in Lagann as they defeat the mecha with Lagann and finally see the surface. Later on Kamina got his own gunmen name Gurren and decided “hey we’re up against a guy whose robot taller than mine! Hey Simon let’s combine!” She when he stab Lagann on Gurren, Lagann energy activate and became with Gurren as Gurren Lagann. (Lagann can combine with any robot.)
First lets talk about Spiral Energy. It’s a power or an energy that powers up the Laganns and use to create Drills. This power comes from fighting spirits from the pilot which everything that is living have spiral energy inside them. This also helps them to evolve further like Simons mole pet in one episode. But thing is spiral energy that only fighting spirit help the Lagann to move so if the pilot goes berserk or abusing the power to destroy and revenge will cause the energy to overload and out of the pilots control (For example Simon crying and not begin himself when Kamina die). But Simon snap back out of it and recover which made him and Gurren Lagann stronger.
Lagann may be small but for a head with legs and arms and bunch of drills it’s a dangerous tiny mecha. He even takes on the Spiral King own robot Lazengann which is an evil version of Gurren Lagann. Very tough to handle huge weapons that are bigger than it’s body and still function. When combine with Gurren to be Gurren Lagann it gives them more speed, strength, modability, and fly when Simon hijack one of the beastmen jet gunmen to become the robot jetpack with wings giving it the advantage to the air. And let’s not forget the drills it has like there’s like infinite amount of drills on this robot! It’s arsenals are crazy, it can shoot drills from it’s arms, extend the drills like spikes from all it’s holes which penetrated easily through gunmen and destroy them fast, uses it’s glasses and jetpack as boomerangs. But if we’re gonna do something big then once he throw it’s glasses boomerang to hold the enemies to place so it can uses all the drills to one hand to create the ultimate move! The Giga Drill Breaker! It’s one of Gurren Lagann finishing move which it can penetrate through the enemy cockpit in the mech which kills them and the mecha along with it which then makes it look cooler (King Kittan achive it as well to sacrifice himself to get Super Galaxy Dai Gurren to Transform). That’s not all he can use his drill. If it need to swim through water it can use it’s drill and spin fast in water easily and go fast too like dam. It can also use the drills to make mini drills and shoot them like missiles. Like this robot weapons is only a drills that can spawn as much drill as it wants like seriously where and how are theses drills made and come out. (If the drill is broken off it can regrow new one fast)
But there’s more thing about Gurren Lagann and that’s Lagann himself along with Simon too. When combining it uses the spiral energy to control Gurren which Simon in his later age pilot Gurren Lagann alone with out the secondary pilot but later team with Viral who became the secondary pilot. But with Lagann it can control Dai Gurren during one episode when they hijack it and mostly Lagann can combine with any robot it thrusts it’s drill into.
Along with that power Simon can use Gurren Lagann to go bigger if he combine it with “Arc-Gurren” which is the biggest giant spaceship to become Arc Gurren Lagann which is a same size as Dekabutsu which if we look at this image here...
that’s just FUCKING HUGE! which given the size and the layer of atmosphere it must be by the Ozone Layer where planes and jets can fly high. It can punch object through the space and time continuum with a single uppercut. But if you want it bigger well there is Super Galaxy Dai Gurren (a colossal battleship) which transform into Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann which that battleship size is longer than the moon length but in robot mode it’s bigger than the moon and got drill on the tip of each fingers and 2 giant drills on it’s shoulders! But that’s not all! In the final battle against the Anti Spiral he and his friends combine their Spiral Powers which create the true and broke the record of the most biggest robot in history “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann” which is a size of a universe. It’s get more bigger to make Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann which is bigger than the universes like dam!!! A drill that size will take out anything! Still he need his friends to get that huge.
So you got a head, put it on a body that has a face, then get that body into a ship, then that ship into a bigger ship, which becomes and inside a giant robot which that robot gets bigger to become a even bigger robot! WHAT IS THIS SOME ROBOT ORGY!?
Gurren Lagann may look unstoppable but it still got some weakness to them. It requires two pilots to ride Gurren Lagann as Simon as an adult then controls the two mechas alone but still get Viral to pilot Gurren. The Spiral Energy is run by fighting spirit which if the pilot lacks any then he’s a goner even abusing it will cause it to overload. Lagann is tough but when fighting the spiral king himself he punch it and rip it’s arms off with force but Simon defeats him with the drill key which leaves a huge hole on the king body and kills him. And Simon without Lagann against the anti Spiral he create a drill on his hand from his own blood and defeat the Anti Spiral for good or use Lagann in the actual episode to beat him.
But we know that when it comes to Simon. His drill is the drill that can pierce the heavens.
"If you're gonna dig, dig to the heavens. No matter what's in my way, I won't stop! Once I've dug through - it means that I've won! ... Just who the hell do you think I am? I'm Simon. I'm not my Bro! I'M ME!! Simon the Digger!"
GaoGaiGar:
Long ago a space man name Guy is on a satellite spaceship till one day an alien call Zondar crash his ship and closely killing him. But was save by the might Galeon kind of his grandpa repair him now making him a hot anime robocop who can run faster than a bullet train and do transformation like a power ranger. Later year when they finally defeated the Zondar, Guy whose body is powered by the G-stone which Galeon give to him recover his whole body evolving him. But with help of Galeon, Guy can fuse with the alien robot lion to become GaiGar.
Now G-Stone is an energy source stone that was made from a planet call Green Planet. It was use for the GGG for technology energy or other word infinite battery source. The energy works by turning courage into energy. And Guy has alot of courage in him.
GaiGar possesses jetpack for dodging, speed, and sharp lion claws for combat but can call upon the Gao Machines to help with flying and to thrust drills with it’s arms too. There’s many Machines but recent ones are the Genesic Gao Machines which Galeon became Genesic Galeon to Genesic GaiGar. which possess same moves but upgraded to become stronger with Guy along with it. When Guy calls to Final Fusion he can combine with the machines to become the reborn legendary King of Brave GaoGaiGar. (During Final Fusion it creates a green dust clouds to cover and protects GaiGar during transformation)
(Final Fusion) & (Genesic Final Fusion) <--click to see video
“This is the strongest God of Destruction. It's the ultimate shape of courage. We've struggled greatly for this great inheritance. His name is...King of Braves..Genesic GaoGaiGar!”
GaoGaiGar strength is unbelievable, defenses unstoppable, and size is big! For it’s left arm it can create a wall of protection (Protect Shade) (Heaven) and spin his right fist to launch it out as a deadly flying spinning death punch (Broken Magnum) (Hell). With GadgetGao it can gives GaoGaiGar arsenals to close combat and like the past gadgets like Dividing Driver it can split space and surroundings to make a fighting like arena field which stay for 30 min. and Will Knife to create a sword like hand for the right arm. It got two knee drills which he can kick and drill them hard. It’s whole body is protected by a Genesic Aura which protects it from harm but from it’s final battle doesn’t look like it. So when to finish things off it will use the hot & cold, fire & water, life & death, but the powerful Hell and Heaven! It catches them in the green tornado gravity lock and charges full force turning them into scrap as he rips out the core destroying the body. If that ever fail he can use the Goldion Hammer that can turn anything into photon level particles leaving no destruction as if the guy is a bomb so if he destroys him he explode but with the hammer he can turn the explosions to dust by bonking it on the head. But if wack a mole becomes a bigger threat Guy can go to space and use the most powerful G Tool of them all...
The Goldion Crusher (<-- click to see video)
Known as the “Gravity Shockwave Generating Division Tool” this giant planet size energy hammer is the final trump card for GaoGaiGar. It was made for only GaoFighGar but the GGG modify it to make it for Genesic GaoGaiGar but he punch it really hard to get his right arm to fit it. Just like the hammer when swing it can destroy anything it hit with the bright gold energy hammer head turning them into light. Like seriously when I say huge this thing looks bigger than the Moon or Earth!?
In past Guy inside the giant robot faces alot of obstacles which pushes their limits to keep fighting. He went to depth of ocean about 1,001 with the help of the Dividing Driver and come out all tired out, handle the Goldion Hammer with out Goldymarg, under huge amount of gravity pressure that only Goldymarg can handle when he was GaiGar, withstand a nova explosion which he’s been there for a long time, took down the Zondar leader and a deadly final battle that he literally got stab in the freaking chest from a sword! Like dam he got some guts.
When in the heat of battle if things are going down he still believe he can still keep going with every last energy he has in him and the mecha itself. So he pushing more further and get stronger even when the robot body is becoming scrapped and breaking apart.
He maybe reckless but Guy has guts and with that he still continue fighting no matter how badly damage he is for he will show the power of the G-Stone and his True Courage.
“When those with courage hold a G-Stone...THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE POWER TO CLAIM VICTORY!!!”
MOD: This is all I got so far and I can’t wait to see if Death Battle does this in any episodes. If you want see recent episode of Death Battle go to Rooster Teeth site or YouTube to watch their updated Death Battle as they’re close to their 100th episode.

TakaraTomy’s latest entries in their Transformers run get a look at first tonight, along with the formal reveal and pre-order of the new Nendoroid from a video game that’s kinda popular. Then we’ve got pre-orders for toys bringing back the anime boom of yesteryear, with another Nendoroid of the classic variety, and Bandai of America trying to bottle that Dragonball lightning again. Plus a quick peek at a new Pokemon toy that caught my eye, and a new Transformer hot off the shelf onto my desk, tonight on Tuesday Night Toys!
New Stuff: Fine China
After seemingly staying quiet for some time, TakaraTomy finally saw fit to show off the next entries in their collector-geared Legends line: Targetmaster versions of Kup and Hot Rod, and Sharkticon with a bonus Sweep head. The Targetmasters continue to go as ambitiously above-and-beyond as TT has been getting lately, including multiple retooled parts (including new arms for Kup and a flip-down engine cover for Hot Rod) and completely new-tooling figures of the transformable gun-buddies. Those look great, though a couple things are rather off. Hot Rod’s got his proper magenta colors here, though his flame decal is looking a bit oddly stained-glass-ish. Kup’s colors are the real question mark, desaturating his distinctive teal all the way down to a mix of greys. This seems to be the result of Takara referencing some particularly poorly-colored models from late G1 episodes, and leaves it looking, as a friend of mine said, like a toy of Kup’s corpse. That aside, the new Targetmasters still look very good, and will likely still be worth it to those going in for the new tooling.
Hey TT, if you wanted to throw together a pack of Nightstick and Fracas, I’d be totally okay with that.
Sharkticon is predictably done up in a more specifically cartoony color scheme, and includes an amusingly Wario-esque alternate ‘Sweep’ head for the Scourge body. It’s nice of them to pack two troop-builders together.
Nendoroid Mei from Overwatch was fully revealed and put up for pre-order yesterday. She continues the detailed standard set by Tracer, good to see GSC is not just phoning these ones in. She includes a removable Snowball who can be set up with an effect for her Ultimate (the description even suggests you set up other Nendoroids ‘frozen in place’ within it). Sadly, no tiny Ice Wall or defensive block is included, those would’ve really pushed Snow Waifu over the edge. These Overwatch Nendos could maybe benefit from Zelda-style DX releases with bonus accessories. As-is, she still looks great, and they know people are going to buy her anyway. Apparently Mercy will be next.
Wishlist: Runnin’ in the 90’s
Nendoroid Lum from Urusei Yatsura went up earlier. The classic Alien Girlfriend getting a new toy like this just this year shows the endearing popularity of Takahashi’s formative rom-com, and the toy looks to be a good choice for anyone still nostalgic for it.
I saw that the first few of Bandai of America’s Dragon Stars line of six-inch Dragonball figures was up for pre-order, and that led me down a rabbit hole of finding out that they were actually launching a full Dragonball Super toy line for aisles over here! Not just these premium collector figures, there are also little blind-bagged spin-battling figures, collectible figurines, a fan-launching Goku, and these goofy things that apparently flex and their shirts fall off. It even includes role-play toys like deluxe Scouters and what is probably the greatest Dragonball cosplay accessory ever: A wristband with a firing Kamehameha.
Oh god anyone actually remember Karate Fighters?
Seeing all these clearly kids-play focused gewgaws makes the impending rollout of Dragonball Super in the west an interesting anticipation. DBZ was indeed hot shit in the late 90’s/early 00’s, and toys not unlike these ones were available to kids like me. Bandai made a lot of money off the franchise, and it’ll be interesting to see if they can repeat that success nearly two decades later.
Tangentially, Tamashii’s World Tour exclusives include this very nice-looking Kaioh-Ken-effect Goku SHF.
I haven’t paid enough attention to Tomy’s stateside Pokemon line. For all that some people gripe that Nintendo doesn’t release toys of enough of the Pokemon, Tomy does seem to do their best to make multitudes of miniature and posable figures of a variety of the cute little bastards. Notably, I was in the aisles the other day and came across a new figure they’re done of Mega Mawile! Mawile’s been a sleeper favorite of mine for some time now, and the Mega form was welcome when it appeared in Gen 6, and this new figure is an impressive, decently posable rendition of it. Nice to see Tomy willing to throw some unexpected choices out there along with all the Starters and Eeveelutions. I’ll have to grab this thing at some point, to indicate to them that I’d like more like it.
On-Desk: Couldn’t hit him
Hasbro’s distribution on Transformers has been nothing if not consistent lately. I hear people are finding that Chaos on Velocitron pack in Toys R Us across the country, so I head to my local TRU and there it is! Now just the last few days everyone has been finding the new Broadside in stores, and indeed, I found one for myself. Broadside was an anticipated release for me, not just for completing the Autobot Triple Changers or adding one more to a modern Wreckers lineup, but because he’s always been a rather unique design with a particularly underrepresented alternate mode. So how is the toy itself?
Titans Return Broadside is a ‘retool’ of Alpha Trion in the same way a chicken burrito is like a chicken salad. Some of the same ingredients are there but you’d probably need someone else pointing it out to even notice. Broadside really is pretty much a whole new toy. The robot mode is one of the looser reinterpretations we’ve gotten from the otherwise stringently G1-accurate Titans Return, sporting the character’s artwork-distinctive ‘broad’ grey chest with a cockpit bit in it, and in spite of ‘only’ being a Voyager-class toy, does a good job of ‘looking’ bigger than average, the way Broadside has often been shown in comics. Lots of bits besides his chest contribute to this, from his thick lower legs with the fins jutting out even further in front of them, to his big meaty mitt-hands, to his solid block of a face. He just conveys size, something that’s always cool when toys of any scale do it.
Transformation to his jet mode is shockingly simpler than I was expecting, especially after the enjoyably involved conversions of the previous wave’s Megatron and Optimus. You really just angle his legs up, shift the arms down, and flip up the nose and you’re there! It definitely is more than the sum of its parts, at least. Once it’s all in the right position everything converges together into a decidedly fantastical but still cohesive jet mode. Once again it commands a sense of size, with the bulky back end and chunky cockpit with its big bubble window that can easily be popped open to seat his Titan Master (delightfully named ‘Blunderbuss’). Thanks to a couple well-placed pegs and clips, it even holds together decently, in spite of playing fast and loose with how the transformation itself works. Still, this is definitely the ‘third mode’ of the Triple Changer.
So would a Broadside gijinka just be a KanColle?
The ‘main’ alternate mode would of course be Broadside’s aircraft carrier form. Fully stretching out the robot’s frame and pegging together panels on the top to achieve the ‘deck’ of the ship, this mode delivers the most fully on the ‘big’ promises of this toy. It’s as long as possible, and even stands high thanks to some creative ‘landing gear’ that folds down from the bottom, to help it set stable. There’s a wide variety of details on top of the deck, selling the idea that this is a big ship with lots going on, including an ID number, a runway (made up of some stickers that could be better) a tiny little scale control tower, and plenty of spaces and areas sculpted in for planes (and more on those in a minute). If there are some imperfections like the stickers and top panels not lining up perfectly flush, it’s all kind of swept away in the overall appeal of the toy achieving a big, unique mode like this.
Broadside is complimented with one of the coolest extras I’ve seen included with a mainline TF in some time: A sprue of absolutely tiny scale airplanes, which are actually sculpted in the likenesses of the Combiner Wars Aerialbots! You clip these off and they’ve got holes on their undersides to peg into the standard-scale tiny pegs that all TR toys have in some places (nominally to let Titan Masters stand on them). In Broadside’s case, the deck of his carrier mode is loaded with a bunch of those things, letting the planes be pegged in a multitude of different positions all over it, completing the look of an aircraft carrier and fully selling the size and scale of the thing once and for all. It rather awesomely turns the whole thing into a mini vehicle playset of sorts. It truly brings the toy to life in this mode, and was a super-cool thing for Hasbro to include. These tiny jets honestly make this toy.
Meanwhile, you can flip over the control tower for probably the goofiest Titan Master seating option in the entire line.
Broadside is far from perfect, with each mode having its share of issues or shortcomings. But it’s the way all the good parts those modes also have come together that makes him work as well as he does. He’s unique and fun to play with, and the bonus of the tiny Aerialbots is just a hoot (you can even peg them onto him in robot mode to sell the idea that he’s super-huge in that form). I know most are going to get him just to complete one or another ‘set’ with previous toys, but he is totally worth getting on his own merits.
I’ll see you all next time, and as always, I hope you have fun!

Original Finn
Adventure Time will end in 2018 after nine seasons. The coming conclusion is bittersweet. The show built a singular brand, a character-driven fantasy drama, swinging from low-stakes bathroom humor, to deep and painful personal truths. Suburban Decay is sorry to see it go, but remains comforted by three facts. First, the network of creatives nurtured by Adventure Time is fruitful and will continue to produce compelling work. Second, serialized fiction without a defined endpoint always deteriorates. Stories that persist forever inevitably lose focus. Third, the show has plenty of good stories left to tell and questions to answer. The remainder promises to be a wild, entertaining ride.
The biggest remaining mystery of Adventure Time was the origin of Finn Mertens, Finn’s status as the last of his kind is the show’s defining concept, and the audience wonders how a human fits in a world that moved beyond humanity. In the first season’s “Memories of Boom Boom Mountain,” we learn baby Finn was found by his adoptive parents, Joshua and Margaret, alone in a forest crying for help. That painful memory solidified his desire to help others, so no one else would experience such trauma. Along the way, we meet two other human survivors. The first is Susan Strong, a musclebound hulk found living among a tribe of subterranean mutants, the Hyoomans. The second is Martin Mertens, Finn’s father.
Martin shares his son’s love for adventure, but the similarities stop there. When introduced, he’s imprisoned in an interdimensional jail reserved for the worst of the worst, and is unruffled upon meeting his long lost child. He flees in an incident that leaves Finn badly hurt, and continues the life of a planet hopping n’er do well. Martin’s role is mostly as a painful lesson for Finn, who eventually accepts that Martin will never live up to his paternal obligations. He can’t clarify where Finn came from, either out of disinterest or amnesia. That loop closes when Martin opts to become part of a galactic collective consciousness. The identity of Finn’s mother is left unclear.
All of this changed in “Islands,” the recent feature-length Adventure Time mini-series. A mad scientist named Dr. Gross reveals there are many other humans remaining, and recognizes the tiny metal implant implanted on Susan Strong’s scalp. That implant, when activated, sends a mysterious flying craft to the Candy Kingdom to retrieve Susan. Before it’s destroyed, the ship’s system recognizes Finn, and the quest to find its source begins. Finn, Jake, Susan, and B-MO find a string of islands based on map data from the ship’s computer. The first is almost completely inhospitable, prone to rapid, absurd shifts in weather and giant animals. The second is mostly derelict, populated by defenseless and withered people incapable of life outside virtual reality. Finn meets his mother on the third, Founders Island.
Minerva Campbell was a Helper, or doctor, on Founders Island, a successful settlement of humans that survived years of radiation poisoning and hardship after the Mushroom Bomb. The community’s security came at a price - residents couldn’t leave, and those who did were caught and sent to re-education by musclebound Seekers. Anyone avoiding capture faced the massive, Colossus-like Guardian, a killer robot who left no survivors, and example of the show’s consistently incredible design. When Minerva met Martin, he was a banged-up con man long on charm and short on scruples. They began a relationship, and Minerva gave birth to baby Finn. Domestic bliss didn’t last. A victim of Martin’s schemes came knocking, and he desperately rowed beyond the shore with Finn to avoid his assailants, yet provoking a confrontation with the Guardian. Martin miraculously felled the robot, saving his son, but never returning.
Minerva was left in pieces. Susan, originally Kara, was the elite Seeker sent to retrieve Finn. The trail went cold, and soon the scientific overreach of Dr. Gross caused a devastating contagion. Nearing death, Minerva uploaded her consciousness to artificial intelligence, and her hundreds of robotic drones pulled humanity back from the brink. She assumes Finn will stay home with her, and is disturbed to see in his memories a life of violence and hardship. When Finn and Jake evangelize freedom, creating a wave of fervor for departure, Minerva activates a flesh-killing forcefield, planning to “protect” the islanders by making them into AI, too. Finn’s mother stops when he shows her his good deeds, proving the unpredictability of the world at large made him into a good person. Minerva and Finn embrace, and Finn returns with his friends to his life in Ooo, the last shot a lonely, glowing ride into a sunset.
Adventure Time always had nuance, and the writing has grown even more subtle. “Islands” is as long as a movie, giving room for overarching thematic touches. This story is about risk versus danger. The first scene shows a little girl playing on the beach, admonishing her imaginary friend to stay within the sandcastle. This extends to the home of Finn and Susan. Founders Island’s highly controlled, fascist society was an understandable reaction to the perilous world after the bomb: rules kept people safe. Yet rules can swallow people whole. Susan’s backstory is achingly beautiful. She idealizes her role as a soldier for the cause, even as her budding love, Freida, chafes at the constraints. Her lasting shame is hurting Freida when she tries to escape, forced against her will by the electrode implanted in her skull. The final confrontation between Finn and Minerva collides his unpredictable life with her desire to protect everyone. Adventure Time always trusts its audience with big questions. The risk of choosing safety over freedom is as relevant as ever.
It’s deeply satisfying to see characters with origins that ring true to their story so far. The show’s previous feature-length project gave this foundation to Marcelline the Vampire Queen. She was born between worlds, the daughter of a demon father and human mother, vulnerable and wary of her evil inclinations. After a childhood focused on survival, a teenage Marcelline found a purpose, helping humans wage war on vampires. The last of the humans escaped, presumably to Founders Island, but the vampire strain survived in Marcelline. She's the teenage anti-hero of Adventure Time: brash, acerbic, violent, and solitary. For all her defensiveness, she craves friendship and intimacy. Her visible dark side doesn’t stop her from doing the right thing, eventually. All of Marcelline’s character traits found points of reference in her story, illustrating the depth of the lore.
“Islands” gives Finn the same satisfying resolution. While the hero of Adventure Time, Finn was mysterious. Ooo comes from tragedy - the world from space looks like a discarded apple. This candy colored planet is perilous. Finn’s the centerpiece - earnest, relentless, and still damaged, his heroism motivated by the trauma of abandonment. “Islands” shows how Finn’s story mirrors his world. Everything reflects the nuclear devastation - all stories emanate from the cycle of destruction and rebirth. Minerva, devoted to selflessness, and Martin, fearless and foolish, combined to create Finn. Minerva’s sacrifice keeps her bound to Founders Island. Finn, though he long craved to know his roots, found a family along the way, and chooses uncertainty over the safety of his birthplace. It’s an elegant story, giving the audience something new while staying true to Finn. Adventure Time is set for a strong, if heart-rending finish. “Islands” is a beautiful way to begin the end.

Ethics in the Drone Industry & AI’s Slippery Slope
It’s an exciting time for the drone industry.
Several companies are pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Hardware is becoming ever more sophisticated, reducing weight, improving flight times and bringing down prices.
Last month DJI launched the Mavic Mini, a tiny 249-gram drone with a range of 4km that can shoot 2.7K video and fly for 30 minutes on a single battery.
A feat of engineering and a measure of how far things have come in the last decade.
October also saw the launch of another industry benchmark: Skydio’s new drone, the Skydio 2. It’s lighter, cheaper and more sophisticated than the original R1 – which is saying something.
Both of these recent releases highlight the progress manufacturers are continuing to make.
Read more: Interview: Skydio CEO Adam Bry on Autonomy, Scaling Up & Taking on DJI
They are being assisted by advances in other spheres, too. One example would be developments from computer chip specialists like Nvidia, who have also recently released a new supercomputer designed for AI at the edge.
There have also been regulatory steps forward. Aviation authorities around the world are getting to grips with drone technology and are increasingly open to more advanced operations. A market is developing around autonomous and BVLOS applications, even if the rules aren’t quite there yet.
Difficult questions on the horizon
But there are challenges on the horizon. One recent product launch in the space of autonomous aviation might have slipped under your radar: Anduril’s Interceptor drone. The Interceptor is an autonomous counter-drone drone that can locate, track and bring down targets at the touch of a button.
Unlike DJI and Skydio’s computer vision technology – which aims to avoid collisions – Anduril’s drone attempts to crash into what it recognizes as a rogue drone. Similar technology, vastly different application.
As with Skydio and DJI’s latest releases, Anduril’s drone is a remarkable feat of engineering. But it’s also proof that the potential of drone technology has reached a point where we have to start asking ethical questions.
Is weaponizing drones a good idea? How will we stop this technology getting into the wrong hands? How can we devise regulations to make sure drones reach their potential as life-saving tools without inadvertently enabling life-taking applications?
DJI, Skydio and Anduril are all combining drones with sophisticated computer vision.
In an interview with the FT, representatives for defense start-up Anduril have insisted that the Interceptor is not the first step on the road to autonomous warfare.
“I can’t imagine a scenario when humans are taken out of the loop,” said Matt Grimm, one of Anduril’s co-founders and its chief operating officer, adding that he did not “accept the premise that the natural end is all out autonomous robot conflict.”
Currently, all of the Interceptor’s attacks are initiated and confirmed by a human operator.
Grimm also described autonomous weapons as unattractive for logical, financial and ethical reasons, and said none of Anduril’s customers have asked the company to develop them.
“Everything we’re doing is in coordination with the US government…. [and] an extension of Department of Defense policy,” said Brian Schimpf, co-founder and chief executive. “Most of the work we’ve done has been very defensive,” he added. Devising weapons is “not something we’re rushing into.”
That may well be the case. But one man’s defensive tool is another’s offensive weapon. More broadly, the elements required to build autonomous drones capable of causing harm are already present across the industry.
As soon as you start bringing those elements together, the argument goes, the genie is out of the bottle and there’s no going back. The technology could be weaponized in a sophisticated way and deployed either against other aircraft, as Anduril does, or against people.
All of which means that regulators and manufacturers have a role to play in shaping how this all unfolds.
Skydio: We’re not going to be in the business of building weapons
The aforementioned Skydio is one company whose technology fits into the category of ‘Incredible, but you wouldn’t want that to get into the wrong hands‘. The startup’s AI is as sophisticated as anything we’ve seen in the industry and it doesn’t require a lot of imagination to take it from a super-smart, obstacle-avoiding, object-tracking consumer drone to something more sinister.
Speaking with DroneLife, Skydio CEO Adam Bry explains that there’s a middle ground to be found for companies like Skydio and Anduril.
“We definitely see clear applications and use cases for our technology in the military and defense world. It’s something we’re working on and we’ll have more to say about it in the coming year,” he says.
“Any time you’re doing product development, you need to think about the ethical implications. Even when you’re purely working with consumers, there are safety concerns and privacy concerns. That kind of thinking should always be present when you’re a product company.
When you get into public safety and defense, the stakes are heightened because [what you’re building], it’s potentially being used in war,” he added.
We have to be realistic and accept that government contracts are big business. No drone manufacturer would or should turn down a lucrative public safety or defense contract, at least not while we’re still at the stage of drones simply providing situational awareness – a feature that is already supporting life-saving operations for first responders and public safety teams around the world.
Bry says that ethical concerns down the line are “definitely something that we think about. I don’t think there are any easy answers.”
“The position we’ve taken is that we’re not going to be in the business of building weapons. We think that our products can be useful for providing information and keeping people out of harm’s way. But we’re not interested in weaponizing them in any form.
“There are concerning possibilities… A shorter-term thing for us is making sure that people don’t abuse the Skydio SDK. With a programmable flying robot in the hands of a bad actor, there are all kinds of concerning things that could happen.
Bry explains that the company is keeping the SDK private at this moment in time. Partly because there is more interest than they can support, and partly because doing so ensures they have more control over how it’s used.
Skydio is expected to announce public safety and defense tools/partnerships in the coming months.
Drone industry manufacturers will soon have decisions to make
Inevitably, the issues raised by the unveiling of Anduril’s Interceptor will be faced by the industry’s mainstream manufacturers. Particularly as they strive for public safety and defense contracts.
It’s not just about developing physical weapons. AI can be used as a tool of oppression, for example assisting surveillance and facial recognition. At which point it’s worth noting that concerns over the development and application of AI aren’t exclusive to the drone industry.
In recent times, Github employees have quit over the company’s work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Google has walked away from two lucrative AI contracts with the Pentagon following complaints from staff and concerns that the company’s technology should not be in the business of war.
And last year, 450 Amazon employees reportedly signed a letter urging CEO Jeff Bezos to stop the sale of facial recognition software to law enforcement agencies.
Ultimately, it’s down to regulators to have the foresight to put measures in place that ensure all technology under development is applied for good.
But given how they tend to be a step behind the drone industry as it is, a little self-reflection and self-policing might be a more realistic option.
