The Case of the Angered House Spirit

Over the course of the past three weeks (since moving to my new abode), I've been having several issues which I've traced back to an angered spirit, here being a Hob. In this case, the angered hob is curdling freshly bought cream, tangling my cat's hair into mats overnight, spoiling food such as bread left on the counter, and making small things go missing. So how does one approach this?

The first thing I attempted was leaving offerings of locally sourced mead and freshly baked bread. I left the items on a makeshift altar, and fell asleep; when I woke the next morning, the bread had turned moldy and the mead had evaporated. The hob was still angry.

Next, I did a deep clean of the room- I had admittedly let the cleanliness of my room go a bit, and it's a very small space. I picked up any clothes laying on the ground, did laundry, and cleared a space for a proper altar/place for offerings. I lit candles, opened the window, and aired out the room in the hopes that taking better care of the place would leave me on better terms with the hob. This, however, had no effect- I felt better, but the milk was still spoiling and my cat's hair was still tangling into painful mats.

Finally, I decided to scry in the mirror that came with the room, with help from a locally made beeswax candle and a mugwort and ghost pipe tincure. I can't speak to exactly what I saw, but essentially I determined that I needed to communicate with and dedicate myself to Good Folk that call the local hill their abode. With some trepidation, I did just that; a contract that connects me to Them for the following three years, while I'm here. I also determined that I had been offering the hob the wrong things; it had connections to brass, motherwort, linden, and hawthorn- I proceeded to make a tea with one part each motherwort, mugwort, linden, hawthorn berries, rose hips, and marshmallow root and now offer a fresh cup of tea each morning.

Well, the current combination breaks the rule of tincture, which means these armes are even more illeagal :D

Heraldry has rather limited colour palette and those seven traditional ones are called tinctures. These tincures fall in to two categories:

Metals Or (🟨) and Argent(⬜️)

and colours Gules (🟥), Sable(⬛), Azure (🟦), Vert (🟩) and Purpure (🟪).

Putting any other colour next to or on to another colour violates the rule of tincture and same happens if metals do the same.

That's why in my coat of arms the Sable duck is on a field which is Or.

For a bit of fun I've been working on arms for the Shivadh novels -- one for the country, one for the royal family, one each for the duchies of Shivadlakia and Askaz, and also one for Eddie, Duke of the Orange, which is a title created for him so his arms are brand new. (For the curious, Richard the Librarian does double-duty as King of Arms, demonstrating that under his orderly and slightly fussy exterior beats the heart of a vicious punster.)

Anyway Eddie's is going to involve ducks, because his title is technically "Dux a L'Orange", and I had to google what heraldic ducks might look like and I can't stop laughing.

THEY LOOK SO LUDICROUS. IT'S PERFECT. They're so adorable and dumb-looking it tickles my very soul. This is the arms of Athis-de-l'Orne in France, and I'm sorry if you live there but your ducks are absurd.

You arrived in the nick of time, standing behind your lab table just as the clock ticked the hour, and your professor entered from the back, perfectly on time as every morning. Professor Kimaris was not impressively tall for a demon, but still stood above most of the humans, with deep brown skin, and bright golden eyes, the left marred with a jagged scar, an old wound that no one in class had dared mention. Quite handsome really, but easily irritated and cold.

Your admiration of the Professor, however, did not help the fact that Alchemy was by far one of your hardest classes, and you had struggled from the beginning with the actual experiments. You knew you lacked the magical prowess of the demonic students, but even still, you consistently struggled with tasks the few other humans scattered in your class excelled on.

Professor Kimaris stopped by the front of the classroom, examining each of the lab tables where you and your classmates had set up your supplies, and you only hoped today would be kind to you.

It was, of course, not.

The Professor cleared his throat, and nodded to the paper in his hand. “Following the syllabus, you will be continuing your attempts to transform water to soap bubbles, using only the bottles in your kit. No real soap is to be used. I will know if you cheat.” You knew that he was referring to Toria, a student— former student, who had attempted to cheat. She had been reported to the guidance office for not following the Code of Conduct, and you hadn’t seen her since. A cold shiver ran down your spine.

Clattering glass and the scarp scent of alchemical tools filled the air as everyone immediately began working. Tomorrow was the last day to prove you could do the simple transformation, and the thought of what would happen if you failed caused your hands to shake.

The bottle in your fingers slipped, falling fast towards the floor, but you managed to dive and save it, the breath whooshing from your chest as you quickly pulled yourself to your feet. Your cheeks blazed, but you kept your eyes down, avoiding the stares of your classmates.

The boy next to you, a demon you didn’t quite know the name of (you made a point, you see, of not knowing demons well enough to learn their names if you could help it) took pity on you, scootching closer when Professor Kimaris was distracted by another classmate’s question on the other side of the room.

“Two drops of Ticture 11, and 8 dashes of dusted robin feather,” he whispered to you, before dropping his attention back to his own glass of water, now a puddle of beautiful foam, reflecting soft rainbows in the light.

Your heart jumped, a smile threatening your lips. Perhaps you could pass after all. You took out Tincure 11 and your vial of dusted robin feather, adding just the right amount.

Horrified eyes widened in your head as the bubbles went from just right to quickly too much, bigger and bigger, flowing out of the glass and creeping off the desk. When you looked over to the demon, he was holding back a laugh.

You stepped back, covering your gasp with a hand. In pure Murphy’s Law fashion, of which you were a staunch believer, you yanked your elbow back knocking over the tub of water used for the glasses, spilling it over your uniform and the floor.

Fear, sharp and tangy, filled your mouth as you tried to find the words that wouldn’t have you killed for this, but the Professor had already noticed the disaster.

“MC!” He said sharply, flicking open the pouch on his hip with his own vials, practiced fingers deftly selecting a bottle you wouldn’t pretend to recognize. He opened the cork with his thumb, and dripped only a single drop on the mess, and you watched as the bubbles collapsed into themselves, instantly water again.

“Go clean up,” Professor Kimaris told you, his cold, gold eyes trained on you. “We will discuss this after class.” Sheepishly, you crept from the room with your tail between your legs, as if you couldn’t feel everyone’s eyes on your back. As if you couldn’t hear their laughing, or your name on their lips.

You didn’t make it far. Your dripping, shuffling, and possibly occasionally sniffling form hit a wall. A wall? A warm wall. No, not a wall, obviously.

I always get so frustrated when I find a new special interest and I get so excited, so I plan my whole future according to that interest, but then a few weeks or months later I lose interest or motivation or find a new one and I have to cancel all my plans.

Like I got obsessed with plant medicine for a while. I learned the medicinal properties of many plants and learned how to make them into tincures, salves and teas and I sold the things I made on markets for a while. I planned on starting a business and maybe even start a practice for fytotherapy. But I couldn't handle the social aspect of selling stuff, then I lost motivation and I still absolutely love plant medicine, but I don't have the hyperfocus to actually spend much time on it anymore. So that dream died, like many others have before..
