So, I'm a new follower that is a bit slow on the uptake. Are Keet, Yonder, Aisling, and Onyx in the same story? Are they interconnected? Yonder 🎯 Keet ✨ Aisling 🧊 Cassius 🍀 Onyx 💼

Omg I appreciate your curiosity about my guys!!! You are not slow on the uptake, my oc tagging system is labyrinthine even to me and I'm sure it's incomprehensible as a new follower djsvbksjbg. Anyway, Yonder and Onyx have connected stories/share a universe, and Aisling and Cassius are in their own separate story, but they're otherwise not connected. They are all my D&D player characters (with the exception of Cassius, who is a side character serving Aisling's story)! I included brief descriptions of each below for a little more context, and their relevant tags are included in the tags on this post if you are curious about any of them.

Yonder (kenku/ravenfolk witch, in their 50s*, pathetic tiny little bird guy, skeevy con artist, wants to literally fight god but is 4'8"): 🎯 What do they do best?

Oh man.......probably finding things out, by which I mean both actually locating things that are hidden and getting information/making discoveries. They are an experimenter at heart and once something's piqued their interest (especially if that something could get them some power they didn't have before), they won't stop poking at it and trying to get to the bottom of it, even if it means making themself a test subject.

Keet (selkie ranger, 19-ish*, amnesiac, washed out of military training and really should let it go, cute dumb lost puppy energy): ✨ How did you come up with the OC’s name?

Hehehe I was hoping someone would ask this about Keet specifically. So she did name herself, being that she woke up alone on a beach about 18 months prior to the start of the story without any recollection of her past life. Her name is the sound an osprey makes, because, when she was living in the woods by herself for the first month or so after waking up, ospreys were some of the only living things she could talk to semi-regularly. She named herself after their sound because, in her words, "It's nice to feel like at least something is calling your name."

Aisling (half-elf rogue, 23, very fire-themed, kind of unpleasant person unless you know them well, chronic pain haver): 🧊 Is their current design the first one?

Her current design is pretty close to the original one from several years ago actually! The general body type, big face scar, hair and skin tone, black and red colors, and gold key accents were all there from the start. The blackthorn cane and white blackthorn flowers are added motifs that are more recent though. (The original art is very old please do not ask to see it vkdsbvkjdvbksb)

Cassius (orc healer, 71, extremely sweet old man with nonetheless crippling anxiety and self-esteem issues, 7'5" gentle giant, widower): 🍀 What originally inspired the OC?

Man this is kind of a hard question for me to answer about any of these guys because ultimately a lot of things probably influenced them, but Cassius is like. The comparison that comes to mind is the bishop from the beginning of Les Miserables lmao. He's that kind of fatherly archetype.

Onyx (formerly human druid turned hellbeast, mid-30s when they died, tar pit/fossil-themed, awful awful person, twisted by vengeance etc.): 💼 What do they do for a living?

Uh, well. When they were alive they were a knight/personal bodyguard for their ruler/lover. Then they were framed for her murder and weren't that anymore. Then they sold their soul to a devil who made them a devil as well. And now they torture people in Hell! They love their new job <3

bound: Has your OC ever been imprisoned or captured? What happened? How did they get out? Did the experience leave any scars?

Laika: Yeah so at the time that she and Salem met 4 years ago she was very much being kept as a prisoner by her caravan since, you know, they believed her to be killing people. Would have certainly ended up a lot worse for her had Salem not taken the interest that she did. Aside from that, though, I think she spent most of her life feeling constrained and suppressed and, at times, was physically sequestered away from anyone else. Her bouts of isolation are partly what led her to develop the vivid imagination that she has.

Keet: At least as far as she can remember, not really? She's pretty much had the ability to make her own (mostly bad) choices and travel freely. If anything, she voluntarily gives other people control over her. I've said before that she would rather be wanted than free, and I stand by that tbh.

ghost: Who or what haunts your OC? What happened? How do they live with their ghosts?

Laika: I suppose, most recently, her "Dad" lmao. I'm sure that dream is not the last appearance he's going to make. Aside from that, though, she's haunted, and driven, by everyone who never believed in her. She's haunted by what she's known since she was very small, which is that, for whatever reason, people are unable to think of her as a decent kid.

Keet: Ohhhh so many fucking things. <3 I mean let's start with the very obvious fact that she can now see the souls of creatures who die around her and that she is burdened by the responsibility of sending them somewhere else on their afterlife journey. Already ghost central with this girl. And then all the vestiges of a past that's familiar, but not too familiar, but not too not familiar. Haunted by the words of a language that she speaks and no one else around her does. Haunted by the pendant around her neck that she can never bring herself to take off. Haunted by the songs she knows despite having no memory of ever hearing them. Haunted, quite literally, by visions of people who share her features and whom she has never seen before in her entire life. And let's not even get into her failures dogging her all the time~!

hide: What does your OC hide? Why do they hide it?

Laika: She doesn't want people to perceive her as weak or to think that they're capable of bothering her with their little digs. (They very much are capable of that.) That kind of bleeds into her not seeming to care very much about things in general, and she can come off as flippant even when that's very much not how she actually feels. That part is less intentional hiding though--it's more that she hasn't had too many models of people who are very emotionally open.

Keet: In a very literal sense, she hides her selkie pelt from most people. She doesn't even strictly know why, other than that she has a very strong, visceral instinct to do so. Besides that, unlike Laika, she's not very good at hiding her emotions at all, but I do think they're alike in that she attempts to conceal pain, with mixed success. In her case, it's more because she doesn't want to burden people.

heartbreak: Have they ever had a relationship that ended badly? Experienced some other kind of heartbreak? What happened?

Laika: Many! Most of which ended all at once when she left the Crown! None of her relationships that ended badly were romantic though--pretty much all her romantic/erotic attachments have been pretty chill and fun.

Keet: She's not one to end a relationship or admit that it might be over tbh lmao.

wound: How does your OC handle being wounded? Are their wounds mostly physical? Mental? Emotional? What's the worst wound your OC has ever experienced?

Laika: I mean she's a fairly squishy spellcaster lmao. I don't think she's a complainer, though, when she's hurt. The things that affect her the most are words. There are probably a couple of things her mom has said to her that would qualify as the worst.

Keet: Her relationship with physical pain is uhhhhh. Unhealthy tbh! She's just come from a highly militant environment where taking a lot of hits and throwing yourself into the fray is encouraged and a massive point of pride. And while she's decently sturdy, in a mechanical sense, she acts way more like a tank than she actually is, getting up into the face of enemies immediately and staying there often until she just goes down. Which is to say she's taken a lot of pretty nasty hits. In terms of mental wounds, well, nothing has fucked her up more than her experience right after she came to consciousness 18 months ago, alone. Almost like it dictates her entire worldview and most of her actions!

6. Who will they take advice from, no matter what it is? Who won't they take advice from, no matter what it is?

Keet: Frankly, Keet could stand to be a lot more discerning about the people she listens to lmao. She tends to assume that people know better than her and it makes her listen to bad advice. It's not that she'll take ANY advice from ANYONE, to be fair, but still. However, in terms of who she will basically always listen to? Probably gonna be Alcaeus, for better or worse. And in defense of both of them, a lot of his advice is genuinely good and confidence-building! ...Even if he's a "do as I say, not as I do" type. But yeah, she'll always listen to the group therapist. Idk if there's anyone in particular she flat-out won't listen to, aside from, like, the cultist that are the party's sworn enemies, idk.

Laika: To the surprise of probably absolutely no one who plays this game at this point, Laika listens to.......Salem! She will frequently be kind of a little shit about it in the way that she usually is, pretending like she won't take Salem's advice, and then very much heed it anyway. Hey, in her eyes, following Salem has led to only good things thus far. In terms of who she will not listen to, pretty much anyone from the caravan where she grew up, with a few notable exceptions. Doesn't matter if they're right on occasion. At this moment, she's also pretty disinclined to listen to her """Dad""". Mostly because he introduced himself as her dad and she hates that.

13. Name one thing their parents taught them.

Keet: So we still don't know anything solid about Keet's family or parents. However, based on what I did come up with about selkie culture and community more generally, her parents probably taught her the first songs she ever learned. This is one thing that she can still remember now, at least in part.

Laika: Mmmm. Let's say her mom taught her self-sufficiency, rather unintentionally cdnasmbdbsbc.

22. Do they like being called pet names? Do they call other people pet names? What’s their go-to?

Keet: Ohhhh she loves it when people give her pet names or nicknames. I mean they haven't very much yet but she would love it if they did lol. If her friends started with her she would absolutely, gleefully do it back to them.

Laika: I think she loves to be a liberal nickname-giver, actually. It hasn't come up so much in-game yet, but I think at minimum she is like, going to be referring to Hammerfall as "little buddy" and Llewellyn as "Llewie." Conversely, there are Some Things wrapped up in her own name that are personal and kind of sensitive for her. That's not to say she wouldn't take a nickname or a pet name (Salem has already demonstrated this with the "Pup" thing), but she might not take it from just anyone, you know? If you're not gonna call her by her actual name you at least need to make it a good alternative lmao.

I'm oblivious to DND so I'm very curious about Kenku's conceptually, but Yonder sounds like the Most Character ever. Corvids are so much fun/it tracks. Which of the asks did you want to get for them? Keet 🌂 Onyx ❤️✂️ Aisling: why does she feel trapped?

I love kenku and am so glad to finally play one. They are literally just little guys, to me. In the official lore, they are flightless and can only speak by parroting what other people say, but I found the second bit to be a bit too limiting for a player character. Instead, Yonder can speak more or less normally, but they are an uncanny mimic of others' voices and, when they're not paying attention, sometimes slip into the voices of others, including those who are no longer alive.

Anyway, in terms of the meme, the question of whether I would ever kill them off is interesting because uh. The short answer is yeah, maybe, lmao. They are actually quite afraid of dying and the associated rot and decay. However, they are currently trying to resurrect their dead family members (their older sister in particular), and since they are a character in a horror campaign, there's a good chance that will all end with them either dying (perhaps in order to take their sister's place) or becoming something that transcends life and death, in which case it's arguable whether they would be "Yonder" anymore.

🌂 What genre do they belong in?

I think Keet is pretty well suited to the adventure genre that she's in, but I have also said before that she kind of behaves as though she were a shounen anime protagonist lmao. Very power-of-friendship (and violence) kind of girl. Perhaps paradoxically, she also wouldn't be entirely out of place in some kind of horror/dark fiction, as we know now that her memory loss is due to her having died before and, long story short, she now sees dead people and has unlocked wacky psychopomp abilities that she doesn't know what to do with yet.

❤️ What is one of your OC’s best memories?

They have a lot of remaining good memories of the princess whom they loved and protected as a knight. While she had several lovers, including among her knights, she had various little ways of indicating in front of everyone that Onyx was particularly favored, and they remember all of those.

✂️ What is one of your OC’s worst memories?

In the first game that I played with them, there was a moment when an enemy hit them with a psychic attack of sorts that made them relive their single worst moment. As I told my GM at the time, what they saw was not discovering the princess dead, not being sentenced to death in the tar pits, but falsely confessing to the dead under torture.

I'm going to answer the question about Aisling under the cut due to spoilers. IRL people who play with me do not look please and thank you ckjdvbdvabg

When they were still a teenager, Aisling was imprisoned for killing a guard during a botched heist. Without going into detail, they spent a couple of years there (prior to breaking out and fleeing the city-state) being almost constantly dehumanized and abused in ways physical and psychological. Also, before all this happened, they had some pretty impressive fire powers, but as a prisoner, they underwent a ritual that prevented them from ever being able to channel that magic properly again. The magic still exists, though, and without a way to escape, it can do (and has done) a lot of internal damage to their body that is sort of reminiscent of certain autoimmune conditions. All of this combined means that, obviously, her life has been permanently changed in ways that she had no control over, and she simply cannot do a lot of things that used to come easily for her previously. (On top of the chronic pain, she struggles a lot with social phobia and borderline agoraphobia, for example.) Basically, no longer physically confined but constantly reminded of the limitations imposed on her by her experience, etc. etc.
