okay this is my complaint about booktok discourse.

i really think people should actually name the genres they’re talking about instead of going on about ‘booktok books.’ ‘booktok books’ is about as meaningful as ‘tumblr tv show’ — like yes, there are some trends, but it’s usually a thinly veiled complaint about a perceived demographic of readers (ie young women and teenagers.) it’s not reflective of what’s actually being consumed and promoted. like there’s a reason so much of the anti-booktok discourse dovetails so easily with misogynist & puritanical talking points.
