It upsets me sometimes that the world makes it seem like we should do all these “cool” things in order to have meaning but I think having a simple and peaceful life can be good too,no? I am on the autism spectrum so sometimes I think things that are out of the ordinary quite anxiety enduring … as followed of Christs as long as we are listening to God do you feel this way of life can be good too?
I like the way you think, listening to God and following Him as we pick up our cross is better than world influences. I don’t film myself on social media like all these videos at YouTube, Instagram, tiktok, and even here. The “trends” I have witnessed on TikTok that people do to try and get famous are even dangerous (like the cinnamon challenge, stealing anything from a school bathroom, tidpods, self-choking challenge, devious licks, etc). So many people who get addicted to social media tell how they get so depressed, they see how “wonderful” the lives are of others through good posts but they forget not everyone posts every single thing about their day and most of the time a person isn’t going to post bad things. “Cool” even has its own trends before social media, such as smoking to be like a movie star without researching it and finding the consequences. People spend thousands of dollars traveling and going to expensive events. While I don’t have autism, I can say I can relate to some things you may experience such as avoiding noisy large crowds in places like malls, I’ve never been to a dance club because it’s just too loud and potential strobe lights, etc. While Jesus never promised our life would be all peaceful and easy if we pick up our cross and follow Him, I believe there are those of us who do suffer less when compared to another person. We can find ways to become more simple (like the little way of St. Thérèse) to offer everything up in prayer and we can find peace the more we become familiar with the Word of God. I believe it’s a gift to be able to understand the Word of God and live it. God wants us to know Him more and more. Listen for His voice and never harden your heart. Let’s live in the world but not of it. I hope we meet in Heaven.
