Kodama Helpers {Ashitaka and San}

A/N: AHHH thank you so so SO much for this request omg i actually rewatched the movie to write this and i SOBBED i love this movie so so much!!!! i love ashitaka to bits and his relationship with san makes me so HFUDSHFJKD i love them!!! this takes place after the events of the actual movie because i couldn't figure out how to work it otherwise LOL and i love the kodama so... yeah! lolol as always i hope you enjoy and have a LOVELY day and remember to hydrate!! :D

Summary: After the Forest Spirit's death, Ashitaka and San work with the kodama to help rebuild the forest. The kodama, however, are feeling a little mischievous.

Word Count: 1.6k (under the cut!)

Ashitaka stirred awake, brushing leaves and grass off of his face. He blinked away sleep and looked around, his mind still foggy while he laid against the soft moss of the forest floor.

“Finally awake, huh?” San leaned over Ashitaka, a small smile on her face. “I couldn’t find you because you were asleep. I needed one of the kodama to help me.”

Ashitaka rubbed his eyes and sat up, mumbling an apology. “I’m sorry… I think my body is still adjusting.”

When Ashitaka and San returned the head of the Forest Spirit back, he had been cured of the curse that would’ve taken his life. He was grateful to the Forest Spirit, which had given life back to both him and the forest as it’s final act. The kodama were coming back and the flora was renewing, which had previously died out after the Forest Spirit’s beheading.

Ashitaka spent most of his time helping Lady Eboshi rebuild the town, which was much further from the forest than before. Ashitaka could tell there was still much lingering resentment from San for Lady Eboshi, but the two of them never spoke of it when they were together.

The curse that would’ve killed Ashitaka had also given him immense strength. However, it fed off of the hatred around him and inside of him and inflicted pain on him with every passing moment. He was still getting used to his old strength and no longer being in pain. Even though he was cured, he was still constantly sapped of energy.

“Your body can adjust while we help the kodama. Come on,” San said, helping Ashitaka up.

The two of them walked through the forest until they reached what used to be the Realm of the Forest Spirit. Trees that had fallen were now growing moss on their logs, and saplings were beginning to sprout where the old trees had died. 

The kodama clicked softly as San and Ashitaka approached. Ashitaka couldn’t understand them as well as San, so he waited until she finished talking with them to find out what the kodama wanted this time.

“They have handfuls of seeds that need to be spread out. Not all of the seeds will grow, so they have a lot.”

Ashitaka hummed thoughtfully, glad for an easier task. The kodama sometimes forgot that he no longer had the same strength, and they had previously asked him to move an entire fallen tree so that they could clean the soil underneath. He and San had to explain that wasn’t possible, and the kodama had been just a bit disappointed.

Ashitaka and San crouched down in front of the kodama, who dropped a small number of seeds into each of their palms. They pointed in the direction they wanted the seeds, and Ashitaka and San got to work.

Ashitaka grabbed small pinches of seeds and threw them around across the forest floor, taking more from kodama that appeared whenever he ran out. San was silent while she spread the seeds, as she always was. Ashitaka turned to the kodama for more seeds, and was surprised to see two in front of him.

“Hello there.” He smiled and reached his hand out, taking a few more seeds. He was about to turn when one of the kodama waved to get his attention again. “Do you need anything else?”

The taller kodama clicked and pointed at San. The shorter kodama then pointed at Ashitaka. The two of them clicked again and then held hands and toed at the ground shyly. Ashitaka raised an eyebrow. “You want the seeds there?”

They looked up at him and clicked again before running through his legs towards San. Ashitaka laughed when they tried to get San’s attention. “I think they were trying to tell me something.”

“What do you need, friends?” San crouched down, tilting her head. The kodama clicked and did the same pose from earlier, making San laugh. “Oh, I’m not so sure. What do you think, Ashitaka?”

Ashitaka was mildly confused. “Do they want us to put the seeds closer together?”

The kodama clicked in a way that sounded almost like a giggle. San snickered as well, waving dismissively at Ashitaka. “It’s nothing. Let’s get back to planting.”

Ashitaka felt left out of the conversation, but he decided not to press the matter if it wasn’t important. The kodama began to trail behind him and San, following in a line as the two of them progressed in spreading the seeds. He would turn around to grab more seeds and the first kodama would sprinkle more into his palm before running around to the back of the line. He looked over and saw them do the same thing for San, clicking as they followed.

After a little while, they had finally spread enough seeds for the kodama to be satisfied. Ashitaka sprinkled the last few seeds he had and turned back to San, who was talking with the kodama and chuckling with them.

“What are you all talking about now?” Ashitaka wandered over. San turned back to look at him and smiled softly, gesturing to the kodama.

“They want to know if you’re my partner,” San said, her smile widening when Ashitaka’s expression became surprised.

Ashitaka nodded, then flushed when he realized what the kodama had meant by “partner.” He shook his head and averted his eyes, trying to avoid San’s gaze. But the kodama had circled the pair, so no matter where he looked, he saw a kodama.

“Do you know what they mean, Ashitaka?” He nodded slowly again, looking directly at the forest floor while he tried to compose himself. San laughed. “Are you… blushing?”

Ashitaka huffed, finally turning to face San as he chuckled. “I suppose I am…”

The kodama surrounding them put their hands on their cheeks and pretended to swoon. Some of them appeared on Ashitaka’s shoulders and lightly poked at his cheeks, clicking while they did so. He giggled softly, trying not to swat them away. Some poked at his ankles as well, making him shift his weight awkwardly.

San observed with amusement, a few kodama appearing on her own shoulders as well. She walked over to Ashitaka and ruffled his hair. “What’s got you giggling?”

He huffed. “I didn’t expect kodama to tickle…”

San raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t know humans could be ticklish.” She began to reach towards Ashitaka, making him flinch away. “I’m just going to tickle you. You’re fine. My brothers love being tickled.”

She poked at his stomach lightly. Ashitaka squirmed and giggled awkwardly, then grabbed her wrist gently and moved her hand away. “Well, your brothers are wolves. I’m not a wohoholf–! Sahahahan!”

He stumbled backward when San scribbled lightly at his ribs, trying to avoid kicking any of the kodama. They moved away when Ashitaka lost his footing and fell backwards in a mess of giggles, San laughing with him in sheer amusement.

“Are humans ticklish in different places? You’re different than wolves, after all. What about your belly?”

Ashitaka gave up trying to squirm away, knowing San’s interest was piqued enough for him not to have a chance of escape. Instead, he curled up and tried to push her hands away, but they were too quick and strong for him to move.

“Sahahahan! Dohohon’t tickle me thehehere! Ah–!” He squealed when she went back to his ribs and journeyed upwards. She hummed in fond curiosity and kept going, reaching Ashitaka’s underarms. He gasped and wiggled around, laughing harder than before as he whined. “Hehehelp!”

“Are you talking to the kodama?” San chuckled. “They’re not going to help you, Ashitaka, they think your reactions are funny.”

“I cahahan’t help it! Yohohou’re tickling mehehe!” Ashitaka wailed. He kicked his legs weakly, then stopped when he noticed the kodama beginning to group up near his legs. “Dohohon’t!”

The kodama were trying to join San, and had slowly begun to poke at Ashitaka’s legs. He tried not to kick them, but his frantic energy from being tickled had to go somewhere, so he began to shake his head and covered his face with his hands.

“Now you’re hiding? You’re so peculiar,” She teased, scribbling under his arms. He had made it much easier for her to get there by covering his face, but he was too distracted to truly notice.

“Mahahake them stahahap! Sahahahan, plehehease!” Ashitaka wailed. He was going crazy from both San and the kodama’s tickles, but not being able to squirm very much made it harder to handle. He squealed until she finally waved them away and continued her own tickling. “Sahahahan!!”

“You just asked for them to stop! Are humans ticklish everywhere? My brothers aren’t ticklish on their legs. And they definitely aren’t ticklish here,” She emphasized under Ashitaka’s arms by poking them, making him squeak in surprise. “Where else?”

“I’m nohohot ticklish everywhehehere!” Ashitaka protested, kicking his legs now that the kodama had dispersed.

“You basically are,” San teased, scribbling around Ashitaka’s torso to prove her point. 

He finally began to hiccup and swat at her hands more, signalling her to give him a break. She sat beside him while waiting for him to recover, which took a while for him to just stop giggling. Finally, he calmed down, and she watched him with a patient smile while he laid flat. He looked at her and smiled, furrowing his brows.

“Are you sufficiently entertained?”

She nodded, helping him up. “We’re all done helping the kodama. Would you like to visit the river before heading back?”

Ashitaka sighed, stretching his arms. He giggled when she poked him again, quickly pulling away and putting some distance between them before he could completely react. He narrowed his eyes playfully. “Am I safe around you anymore?”

San shrugged. The kodama clicked around them, catching their attention. They began to put their hands on their cheeks again, clicking and pretending to swoon. Ashitaka’s cheeks went red again and San laughed, nudging him to follow her down to the river. They waved to the kodama and went down to the river, spending just a little more time together before Ashitaka left.

Ashitaka // Tickle Headcanons

Tickler:

🪐 Would occasionally tickle his little sister growing up.

🪐 Very skilled and gentle as a ler.

🪐 Likes to make sure his lee is having fun.

🪐 Only tickles those he is close too.

🪐 Was the one to introduce San to tickling.

Anticipation {Ashitaka and San}

Ashitaka fidgeted. He leaned back and leaned forward. He crossed and uncrossed his arms. He lifted one knee and then the other, then lowered both back down to the ground.

“Would you stop that?” San barked from the other side of the log.

Ashitaka stopped fidgeting.

There was a long silence where only the clicks of the kodama could be heard. San sighed.

“Okay, now it’s too quiet. Keep going,” She said, going back to whatever she was doing on the other side of the log. Ashitaka could not see what she was up to, but he knew she was likely helping one of the kodama.

Ashitaka did not resume his fidgeting.

“Ashitaka?” San peeked over the log and Ashitaka offered a sheepish smile. She frowned. “I didn’t hurt your feelings, did I?”

Ashitaka shook his head. “No, I was being impatient… I’m sorry I bothered you, it wasn’t my intention.”

San sighed again. “I know it wasn’t. I was very focused but now I’m not, so you can keep making noise now. The kodama enjoy it.”

Ashitaka shrugged. “Fidgeting isn’t really something you can do when prompted…”

San rolled her eyes and ducked back down behind the log, continuing whatever she was doing.

“I could always just tickle you to make you fidget,” San said. Ashitaka could hear the grin in her tone and he shuddered.

“There’s no need for that…”

Ashitaka began to scoot little by little away from the log, but San continued on.

“I’ll catch you if you try to sneak away, and I know exactly how to make you laugh by this point. I know that tickling your ribs makes you squirm back and forth,” San peeked her head over the log at this point and clocked Ashitaka’s nervous expression. She grinned. “I know that when I tickle your belly you grab my wrists and try to pull them away.”

Ashitaka’s face twisted into a nervous smile as he scooted back just a bit more. San climbed up on top of the log and continued.

“When I tickle your underarms you laugh even harder and always cover your face, which really just makes it easier to tickle you there.”

“San– San stop it,” Ashitaka giggled, continuing his slow retreat.

San hopped off the log and began to slowly lurk toward Ashitaka on her knees. Her hands were behind her back, because another thing that she knew was that if she wiggled her fingers at Ashitaka he would break out into nervous giggles.

“I know that when I tickle your hips you buck like Yakul–”

“I do not!”

“And I know that when I tickle your legs you try to pull your knees into your chest, almost like you want me to tickle your belly again.”

Ashitaka and San were now face to face, with San’s hands still behind her back. Ashitaka tried to hold her gaze, but he glanced toward her hands out of nervousness, which is what finally prompted San to end the anticipation.
