oooooooh the Kobolds of Tian-Xia often work as bureaucrats and scribes working for powerful supernatural creatures in their imperial and royal courts. Thats such a good use of their "minion" lore. plus there is a very cute and serious look kobold in the artwork of this book.

Pathfinder Review: Tian Xia Character Guide

YOU CAN ALSO BE A LITERAL MAGICAL GIRL NOW
Something else about Pathfinder is I'm not sure many people are aware how fucking funny some of the options are. Like, you can make a dude who's entirely built around being a gossipy little shit but it gives you particular bonuses for being a gossipy little shit. You can make a story teller who tells stories and if you're fighting the stories come to life and help everyone. You can fall asleep and do everything through dreams.
Not that you necessarily need "like D&D but different" to try new ttrpg stuff in general or those ideas in particular, I only happen to find it entertaining all of those are specific options someone decided to include in one system. Like yes you can also build your damage optimized fighter or whatever. Or you could be a detective! Or a clown. Or a clown fighter who is also a detective.

I acquired the Lost Omens Tian Xia Character Guide for PF2e recently and there's lots of cool things in there, but as the person who writes about familiars extensively, I always check those out first. This thing, this tiny fella, let me tell you I love it.
Tumblr media
Why yes I would like my familiar to be the kindest and wisest tea master in the world that just so happens to also be this fudging thing.
Tumblr media
Anyway, if you want to see me talk about this and many more familiar options in PF2e, check out my familiar guide I've been working on since December. Now updated fully for PC2 and LO: TXCG!

Youku helpfully providing us with a guide to each character's name for our four main actors. Here are my notes on who's who from the novel (may be changed in the drama)
"Shangqing Immortal realm (war between Gods and Demons)"
Devil God - baddest (and hottest) guy in this or any realm, all he wants is to destroy immortals and plunge all beings into a hellish existence. I, for one, will be subscribing to his newsletter.
Li Susu - a righteous cultivator, daughter of the head of the Hengyang sect, who will travel back in time and into the body of Ye Xiwu to try to prevent Tantai Jin from becoming the Devil God
Mo Nv - (this is a new character not in the novel)
Gongye Jiwu - Li Susu's senior eldest brother in Hengyang sect
"500 years ago - mortal realm"
Tantai Jin - born with an evil bone and no understanding of right and wrong, abused as a child and sent to live as a hostage prince in a foreign kingdom. Has a crush on Ye Bingchang.
Ye Xiwu - married to Tantai Jin but hates him, she's actually in love with Xiao Lin.
Ye Bingchang - Xiwu's half-sister. Concubine of Xiao Lin. She's one of the few people who are nice to Tantai Jin (OR IS SHE?)
Xiao Lin - heir to the throne of Xia. A nice guy.
"Fleeting Life of Wisdom Realm"
Ming Ye - a flood dragon who lives at the bottom of the river. In the Shangqing realm, was the god of war. Devoted to Tian huan.
Sang jiu - a lowly but cute clam sprite married to her biggest crush, Ming Ye (for reasons that I don't remember) who doesn't give her the time of day
Tian Huan - a heartless, selfish, evil B of an 'immortal'
Sang You - Sang Jiu's brother

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

PLEASE tell me what the new stuff for pathfinder 2e is that lets you play a Actual Wolf infused with magic and sentience . This would make me play pf2e again on the spot.
So the first and most accurate to the phrase is the new Awakened Animal ancestry that will be appearing in Howl of the Wilds which comes out in May. in the Tian Xia: Character Guide there will be Yaoguai which are described as animals, plants, or aspects of nature that were infused with magic or energy and gained a humanoid form and shapeshifting powers. I don't know enough about them in Golarion, or the original lore that inspired them. But they seem really cool, and get the concept broadly. I hoped I helped.

I got to flip through the World Guide earlier this week and am slowly making my way through it now, and it's truly remarkable, in an already-remarkable lineup of similarly deluxe setting books that PF2 boasts.
Tian Xia in First Edition was...messy, to say the least, but it also had a good deal of potential, and it's genuinely impressive how much this book elevates and fleshes it all out - while at the same time not being overwhelming with detail on any one place (it's about 8 pages per nation/region, which still adds up to over 300 pages total in this first book alone).
I'm Polish, so not exactly Asian by any measure, but the authenticity, inspiration, and passion on display in the writing and artwork in this is palpable... And it's just damn cool, fun, and fresh fantasy, you know?
Hoping to one day run some games utilizing this material (places like Tianjing and Wanshou are probably my personal favorites so far!), and equally excited to crack into the accompanying Character Guide later in the year! 😊
Earlier today, Paizo announced long awaited books for their Asian inspired continent Tian Xia. Unlike many other companies attempting projects that large, Paizo went out of their way to hire damn near every Asian TTRPG writer in the business.
I’ve worked on ~100 books & games. I’m often the only Asian on a project. It’s rare to have more than 1 other Asian on a book with me.
The Tian Xia books?
There were like 40 of us! 😲
I’m really glad that Paizo took the time to do this right. 💚
Players are going to see what a difference that level of representation makes when they get their hands on Tian Xia & see the massive diversity of Asian cultures & experiences reflected in the books.
I’m not just talking about countries or ethnicities; there’s also different stories of identity — diasporic groups, immigrant experiences, people reconnecting with their heritage, refugees, people finding & making places of belonging, … The sheer breadth of Asian experiences and identities represented in Pathfinder’s Tian Xia team and in our books is astounding.
This is why representation matters.

Would like to add two more canonically trans characters: you've mentioned the Iconic Shaman Shardra Geltl (left); but there's also Wrath of the Righteous NPC Anevia (who is also a lesbian. Her wife Irabeth sold her family's sword to buy a potion of sex shift for Anevia to magically transition); and Iltara Clavela, proprietress of a stall called "Material Changes" in the Grand Bazaar. She helps people find their inner self, which means transitioning without the help of magic, and she is an expert seamstress who makes clothes that help people feel like themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as Mios, the Iconic Thaumaturge (left), who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, we have Reiko, the Iconic Ninja, who is female-presenting genderqueer/genderfluid and asexual.* *This was stated in a forum post by the person who wrote Reiko's backstory, but they stated it while not acting in an official capacity, so it hasn't been confirmed as canon yet.
Pathfinder also has a deity of sex workers, Lymnieris. Her edicts are: Help others achieve their desires, aid and protect sex workers, help others through difficult transitions; and her anathema are: Persecute sex workers, force or support unwanted marriages
And that's just LGBTQIA+ rep! Mobility aids and assistive devices like wheelchairs and prostheses are common in the world of Golarion and readily available for adventurers.

Paizo also employs many black and indigenous American writers and artists, and gives them a chance to share their experience, culture and heritage in blog posts like these:
Uplifting voices for Black History Month 2023
Honoring Native American Heritage Month
Not to mention these passages from Lost Omens: The Mwangi Expanse and from Gamemastery Guide:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paizo's current design philosophy makes clear that they're conscious of reductive tropes in fantasy fiction and they're trying to steer away from them, making stories about people.
Next year, there are going to be two books about Tian Xia, the Asian-inspired continent. But unlike some settings, which take "Asian-inspired" to mean "Chinese, Japanese and Korean but all blended together and homogenised", the lands of Tian Xia take from wider Asian traditions (including India and southeast Asia, which is often underrepresented in fantasy fiction). Paizo is trying to be very careful about cultural appropriation, inviting people from different backgrounds and heritages to share their culture with the community.

You do! It comes out when the book is sent for shipping. If you go to the Paizo website, it'll let you know what's the first book you'll get if you subscribe now. Likely Lost Omens Tian Xia Character Guide, if not, you'll just get the current Lost Omens book on the normal shipping date for release.
Tumblr media
Thanks Paizo for basically letting Desna have an alternate form that's Mothra in the Tian Xia World Guide.
