There is no avoiding the reality that fractures sustained while training and racing is the most pressing of the challenges facing Thoroughbred racing. Veterinarians, trainers, and their support workers at Santa Anita Park have made some dramatic improvements to their system of checks and balances and have significantly reduced their injury rates relative to their previous numbers. In fairness to those that have recently joined the debate about these injuries, the details of these improvements are lost with the addition of each new injury and the growing injury total.

A recent opinion piece on the effects of the products Lasix, Gastroguard, and Thyro-L on fracture formation is an example of the misunderstandings associated with fractures in racing Thoroughbreds.  Although strong evidence is missing that therapeutic medication plays a role in fracture development, these topics have become entangled due to the recent events in southern California: perhaps a discussion for another day.

The purpose of this editorial is to address some of the misunderstandings of fractures in racing Thoroughbreds, to provide some insights about why these fractures are elusive and a challenge to identify, and how early identification using advanced imaging can help the situation.

When dealing with tissue, two types of injuries can occur: an acute injury and an overuse (chronic, stress) injury. An acute injury occurs when a single high force overwhelms the tissue's ability to deal with the force and it fails. The second type, overuse injuries, can affect muscle, tendon, ligament, and bone and are the most common reason that human athletes visit a sports medicine clinic. Overuse injuries are the result of smaller forces whose damage accumulates over time. Common examples in human medicine include tennis or golfers' elbow, Achilles tendinitis, and shin-splints.

Speaking specifically about bone injuries, an acute fracture of bone is known as a traumatic fracture. Falling off a ladder and breaking your tibia is an example of an acute (traumatic) fracture of bone. The single high force of falling overwhelms the ability of the tibia to deal with the force and it fractures. Acute (traumatic) fractures are a rare event in racing Thoroughbreds, although the phrase taking a “bad step” is often mistakenly implicated in media reports as the cause for fracture formation.

Overuse injuries of bone represent the great majority of fracture failures in the racing Thoroughbred and are known as a bone stress injury or BSI. Racing Thoroughbred, like marathon runners and the marching military, perform a sport with a repetitive cycle to the sport. For racing Thoroughbreds, their repetitive cycle is the gallop gait. In a small number of horses, the repetitive nature of the gallop gait causes bone to gradually accumulate damage over time and ultimately fail. Fractures begin at the cellular level manifested as bone marrow edema and, when combined with insufficient rest, progress into micro-cracks, macro-cracks, and ultimately a complete fracture. Two examples of bone stress injuries in racing Thoroughbreds include humeral (upper forelimb) stress fractures or condylar fractures of the cannon bone in the fetlock joint.

Herodot este acela care ne aduce primele stiri despre agatârsi (agathyrsi). El afirma ca sunt oameni foarte luxosi si poarta podoabe de aur. Ei îsi tatuau si îsi pictau fata si tot corpul, iar parul si-l vopseau în albastru dupa cum ne relateaza Pliniu cel Batrân. Se tatuau desigur dupa obiceiul tracilor cu un ac si cu o culoare albastra ce nu se stergea, iar în afara de bijuteriile lor de aur mai purtau si diamante.

Agatârsii aveau un stat din Transilvania pâna în Moldova

Agatârsii îsi creasera un stat în Transilvania pe vaile Muresului si în partile de apus ale Moldovei care se pare ca a dainuit pâna catre sfârsitul sec. III î.Hr. Aristotel care scria catre sfârsitul sec. IV î.Hr., îi mentioneaza pe agatârsi. Pomponius Mela din sec. I î.Hr.,Vergiliu, dar si Pliniu cel Batrân (sec. I d.Hr.) îi mentioneaza pe agatârsi, ce nu erau prea demult disparuti, astfel ca trebuie sa admitem ca ei au existat, asa cum ne arata si alte surse istorice, pâna în sec. III î.Hr.

Agatârsii vroiau un stat unde sa nu existe ura, ci doar iubire

Statul tracilor agatârsi are o serie de caractere cu totul unice în Antichitate. Trebuie sa folosim termenul de „stat” când vorbim de societatea tracilor agatârsi, fiindca ea era guvernata de legi scrise într-un codex pe care tinerii îl învatau pe dinafara si mai ales îl învatau sa-l cânte. Informatia acesta ne este adusa de Aristotel, care precum se stie a adunat constitutiile tuturor popoarelor cunoscute, desi nu a ajuns pâna la noi decât „Constitutia atenienilor”.

Se pare ca, dupa spusele lui Herodot, tracii agatârsi au urmarit ca în poporul lor sa nu fie nici ura, nici pizma, adica au vrut sa constituie o societate în care oamenii sa se îndrageasca între ei, si sa nu existe ostilitate si lupta pentru ca fericirea sa domneasca, toti fiind frati, foarte uniti între ei.

La agatârsi nu exista familie, ci o comunitate a femeilor

În acest scop în statul lor se instituie comunitatea femeilor, desigur pornind de la premiza ca femeile pot aduce dezbinare si ura între barbati.

Nu stim care era modalitatea prin care se faceau uniunile între barbati si femei, dar faptul ca barbatii erau foarte luxosi, ca se tatuau, ca se vopseau, adica faptul ca acordau atâta însemnatate aspectului lor exterior, apoi faptul ca purtau podoabe de aur, dovedeste ca voiau prin frumusetea si eleganta lor sa câstige inimile aleselor lor si ca alegerea se facea atât de barbati cat si de catre femei.

De asemenea daca femeile erau în comun, cum afirma Herodot, si bunurile si averea trebuie sa fi fost tot în comun, pentru ca neexistând o familie nu avea cine sa aiba grija de bunurile personale, de vite de pilda, de casa, de gospodarie, pentru ca, asa cum vom arata în continuare, comunitatea femeilor în istorie a fost asociata totdeauna cu comunitatea bunurilor.

Comunitatea femeilor, caz singur în lume, doar la agatârsi

În lumea antica existenta comunitatii femeilor nu se constata decât la agatârsi. Nicio cetate greaca nu a instaurat asemenea legi, desi a existat poliandrie ca la Sparta de pilda, unde mai multi barbati aveau o singura femeie, fiind de obicei frati intre ei. Herodot relateaza ca un popor din Africa, nasamonii „au fiecare de obicei mai multe femei, dar le folosesc pe toate în comun. Când un nasamon se casatoreste obiceiul cere ca în prima noapte sotia sa treaca de la un oaspete la altul.”

Tot asa masagetii nu aveau femeile în comun, dar se puteau uni cu orice femeie ar fi vrut. Însa promiscuitatea propriu-zisa n-a existat la niciun popor niciodata, si nici comunitatea femeilor n-a existat la vreun popor vreodata.

Asadar, comunitatea femeilor care exista la agatârsi nu era un fenomen social originar, ci fusese introdusa pe cale de legiferare, iar legiferarea nu apare decât la popoare aflate în stadii înaintate de dezvoltare.

Barbatii se împodobeau mai frumos decât femeile

Precum am aratat, comunitatea femeilor la agatârsi presupune ca fiecare barbat putea sa-si aleaga iubita sa, cu conditia ca aceasta sa-l accepte. Din acest motiv barbatii se împodobeau cât mai frumos, se tatuau si îsi pictau corpurile, purtând podoabe si giuvaeruri de aur.

Textul lui Herodot indica faptul ca doar barbatii se purtau atât de luxos, desigur spre a cuceri pe aleasa inimii lor. Astfel barbatii erau mult mai frumos imbracati si împodobiti decât femeile.

Aceasta deosebire se regaseste întocmai la unii locuitori din Pacific unde barbatii se decoreaza (prin tatuaje) si se împodobesc cu coliere, bratari etc. mai mult decât femeile. Actualmente în portul popular din Maramures si din nordul Transilvaniei se poate constata ca barbatii sunt foarte frumos împodobiti, în contrast cu ce se observa în Oltenia, în Muntenia sau în Moldova de sud unde femeile au costume mult mai frumoase si sunt mai fastuos împodobite decât barbatii.

Agatârsii si getii erau comunisti

Desigur comunitatea femeilor implica si o comunitate a bunurilor. Stim din textele lui Horatiu ca la geti, deci si la agatârsi „ogoarele sunt neîmpartite si produc roade comune”.

Comunitatea femeilor la agatârsi suprima desigur salbaticul obicei al sinuciderii vaduvei ramase dupa moartea sotului ei, asa cum era datina la unii geti. Este posibil ca aceasta comunitate a femeilor sa fi fost instituita spre a se suprima datina jertfirii vaduvei ramase dupa moartea sotului sau, datina care se stie ca a persistat pâna în sec. al XIX în India sub numele de sati.

Astfel putem interpreta eleganta si luxul agatârsilor. Daca avem în vedere ca în societatea agatârsilor era o continuare a riturilor din Misterele lui Dionysos, ai carui adoratori erau acestia, atunci femeile erau egale cu barbati si aveau, poate ,un rol mai mare fiindca în ceremoniile Misterelor , femeile numite bachante sau menade sau thyade, adoratoarele lui Dionysos, erau cele care organizau desfasurarea acestor ceremonii.

Agatârsii nu credeau în Zamolxis, caci purtau podoabe de aur

În ceea ce priveste credintele religioase ale agatârsilor, putem afirma cu destula certitudine ca ei nu erau adoratorii cultului lui Zalmoxis si ai Misterele sale, adica ai riturilor prin care se conferea nemurire geto-dacilor deoarece tracii agatârsi duceau o viata foarte putin ascetica, aveau relatii cu multe femei si purtau podoabe de aur, fiind tatuati si vopsiti spre a place femeilor. Or în cultul lui Zalmoxis exista o interdictie de ordin religios – în acord cu ascetismul si cu simplitatea vietii adoratorilor lui Zalmoxis de a nu purta obiecte si bijuterii de aur.

I.H.Crisan scrie cu privire la aceasta problema: „Ramâne în continuare deschisa problema ciudata a disparitiei obiectelor de aur în secolele ce au precedat cucerirea romana, atâta vreme cât izvoarele literare ne atesta clar existenta lor”.

Iar Vasile Pârvan scrie: „Ceea ce trebuie sa mire mai mult decât lipsa chihlimbarului, e lipsa aurului de la Ten-ul getic”. Ar fi fost cu totul paradoxal ca oamenii ce aderau la credinte ce impuneau înfrânarea si simplitatea vietii sa poarte podoabe de aur. O interdictie similara pare sa fi existat si în Egiptul antic,si se stiu relatiile care au fost atestate de antici între Egiptul antic si Zalmoxis, prin intermediul lui Pitagora.

Agatârsii, adoratori ai lui Dionysos, zeul vitei de vie si al orgiilor prelungite

Agatârsii par a fi fost adoratori ai lui Dionysos, zeul vitei de vie, dar si al orgiilor prelungite. Se stie ca Dionysos, al carui nume îl aflam si în scrierea creto-miceniana a alfabetului linear B si în tablitele de la Pylos din asa-zisul palat al lui Nestor din sec. al XIII î.Hr., era un zeu care fusese adoptat de acheeni micenieni înainte de razboiul troian. El se afla mentionat si în Iliada, împreuna cu adoratoarele sale, numite de Homer „doici”, dar care sunt denumite menade sau thyade în Misterele sale, precum si în riturile si ceremoniile legate de acestea.

Adoratorii lui Dionysos în conflict cu adoratorii lui Zamolxis

Fiind Dionysos divinitatea protectoare a vitei de vie si a vinului este evident ca masura stârpirii vitei de vie în Dacia pe vremea lui Burebista si a marelui preot Deceneu era în ultima instanta un act de ostilitate vadita împotriva lui Dionysos si a riturilor sale orgiastice. Lucrul nu trebuie sa mire întrucât chiar în Iliada se arata cum regele trac Lycurg le urmareste , vrând sa le ucida,pe adoratoarele lui Dionysos, curmând o scena ce pare a fi o parte din Misterele ce se desfasurau în cinstea lui Dionysos.

Este de înteles ca împotriva orgiilor din riturile lui Dionysos trebuie sa existe o mare ostilitate a ascetilor,adoratori ai lui Zalmoxis ce posteau necurmat si se înfrânau de la orice placeri trupesti. Într-adevar cultul lui Dionysos avea un caracter orgiastic, comportând ceremonii care se desfasurau la anumite intervale, în care se bea mult vin, se cânta, se jucau hore noaptea la lumina facliilor, se striga, se alerga, rituri la care luau parte, despuiate sau îmbracate în costumatii stranii,femei amestecate cu barbati.

Aceste Mistere ale lui Dionysos au fost interzise în anul 186 î.Hr. la Roma de catre senatul Republicii pentru ca puneau în primejdie siguranta statului si moralitatea publica,din motive bine intemeiate.

Agatârsii, getii cu tyrs

Un autor latin Valerius Flaccus îi numeste pe agatârsi, Tyrsagetae „geti cu thirs”( adica getii cu toiag) , apelatie care nu trebuie confundata cu Thyragetae, „getii de la fluviul Thyros (Nistru)”.

Aceasta apelatie a lui Valerius Flaccus ne dezvaluie sensul real al acestui nume de „agathyrsi”si ne arata originea acestei denumiri.

I.H.Crisan crede ca reprezinta o porecla data tracilor din Carpati care n-a fost evidentiata pâna acum.

Aceasta denumire thyrsagetae, „getii cu thyrs” înseamna ca agatârsii erau adoratori ai lui Dionysos, pentru ca în multe din reprezentarile grafice ale acestui zeu, el poarta thyrsul, acesta fiind emblema zeului Dionysos (un toiag de lemn sau de trestie care la cap era încununat cu frunze de vita de vie sau de iedera) . Mai toti adoratorii lui Dionysos purtau emblema acestui zeu, thyrsul, în literatura greaca el aparand catre anul 430 î.Hr.

În marele Dictionnaire des antiquite’s grecques et romaines (Paris, 1898) întocmit de Daremberg si E. Saglio, în articolul consacrat thyrsului, marele elenist A.J. Reinach arata ca pentru autorii antici, agatârsii erau getii cu thyrs, adica adoratori ai lui Dionysos, si se interpreta numele de „agthyrsos” prin „acela care agita thyrsul”, prima parte a acestei denumiri “aga” fiind verbul grec “ago” = „a duce, a conduce”, iar “thyrsos” este numele thyrsului însusi.

Deci “agathyrsul” este acela care umbla mereu cu thyrsul în mâna, semnalându-si astfel calitatea de adorator al lui Dionysos. Grecii care îi vedeau mereu pe getii adoratori ai lui Dionysos cu thyrsul în mâna i-au poreclit agathyrsi (agatârsi).

Aceasta etimologie a numelui agatârsilor – singura deocamdata pe care o cunoastem – exclude bineînteles orice posibilitate ca agatârsii sa fi fost sciti, pentru ca vita de vie nu crestea în tinuturile locuite de ei – iar Dionysos nu era un zeu adorat de sciti. Ba mai mult, un rege scit care a fost initiat în cultul lui Dionysos a fost izgonit de pe tron din acest motiv si apoi ucis, tocmai fiindca si scitii erau ostili ca si romanii sau ca unii dintre greci cultului orgiastic al lui Dionysos.

Agatârsii sunt dacii de mai târziu

S-a scris de catre W. Tomaschek, dar si de catre H. Stein ca agatârsii sunt dacii de mai târziu, si afirmatia acesta este facuta si de I.H.Crisan care scrie ca „agathyrsii pe limba lor se vor fi chemat întotdeauna daci”.

Este foarte probabil ca agatârsii este o porecla data de grecii din cetatile portuare ale Pontului Euxin traco-getilor din Transilvania pentru ca umblau mereu cu thyrsul în mâini, dar trebuie aratat ca acestia nu erau închinatori ai lui Zalmoxis, ci erau adoratori ai lui Dionysos, ale carui Mistere le celebrau în orgii rituale, iar reformele lui Burebista si Deceneu au avut ca scop extirparea acestui cult. Cert este ca agatarsii sunt stramosii dacilor

Since I’ve been taking care of lacy the last new days it’s been perfect for me to work her as well. She has been so awesome coming back into work. Of course it’s been super easy and light work but she has been so sharp and listening so well 🤩 I have been going a lot slower than usual, sometimes I think I go fast and it feeds to her anxiousness/anticipation, and it’s helped a lot. We’ve also only done w/t so that helps too. She’s been so calm and so sharp on things I’m asking. Besides her *obvious* weight gain, it’s like she never got off work and is coming back even better. Our transitions have been so much faster and our stop is wonderful and immediate. I’ve been trying to do something a little different every time we work as well to try and keep it interesting so I don’t sour her too much. Esp when I want to do a lot of ground work before riding again for one, to get her in shape and two, get back to the mindset so we’re good to go when we ride. Plus, we’re coming into fall and winter so depending on winter will depend on my riding.. I think the biggest thing I’ve noticed we need to work on again is ground tying. She’s walked off on me twice now so def need a refresher 😂

But anyways I’m SO pumped and I hope this continues. And the plan for jack is to lightly/moderately work all until the new year and then get a performance test on him and possibly put him back on thyro-l if weight doesn’t come down.

Anybody have any fun/different ground exercises I can do to spice up our fat camp/get back to work camp?
