A major element of communication regarding emotion and the etheric is also taken away by covering the face.

The parasitic obsession with our distancing from each other physically follows the same energetic model as “distance is your friend,” does in regard to energies dangerous to us. Lloyd Burrell of Electricsense.com, a website to help people with EMF sensitivity, explained how distance is your friend with EMF and how the most important thing is to avoid it. Keeping it out of the house altogether is best. He doesn’t advocate “gadget” fixes for EMF because he thinks it should be removed from our lives completely (so do I). He doesn’t endorse orgonite for this reason, but I do because if you do the hard work of ridding yourself of EMF and others are using it, the orgonite is a great way to make your home even quieter energetically, aid in sleep and good health, and increase consciousness. Even with distance from your neighbor’s wifi, it’s still great to neutralize it. There is a lot of benefit to be gained by increasing OR. It’s not just about decreasing DOR, which is of course the most important first step. You can’t use orgonite as a band-aid, but in conjunction with eliminating deadly energy, it really changes the whole dynamic of your house and even your neighborhood. If you take this concept and invert it, you can see why the parasites may want to keep us away from each other to avoid energy deadly to them! We are strong OR generators, especially when we’re together.

For the parasites, distance from life-giving orgone energy is their friend. Orgone energy is death to them because they are inverted. They purposely have created a world of deadly energy out of a planet that is a natural OR generator. The OR is still there functioning in the minerals of the Earth, mountain peaks, oceans, and forests. It is also in us. When we are together, our energy increases and we help each other just by being together. Humans are naturally communal, and distancing takes away a vital part of our nature. When we feel depressed and scared because we’ve been isolated in our houses, listening to terrifying news about more freedoms lost (or for the believers in the lie, a horrible disease which could kill them), our OR becomes contracted. This makes us more susceptible to disease and depression because our bodies and minds are weak. This is the state that the parasites need humans in so they can feed. They suck off of the negative emotions as sustenance. They keep us away from each other by mind control, programming delusions into the mind, so that we feel even more depressed and isolated. We need each other’s support now more than ever and we have been convinced that we are not to be together.

When humans are together, it not only satisfies a social need, but it also conducts orgone energy and connects people more strongly through the psychic web which connects us all. The parasites have us connected through an electromagnetic web, but this is not our true nature. This is simply a way for them to control us, mind and body, and to keep tabs on all of our business. In reality, we can already communicate over distances without the aid of a telephone or computer. This etheric ability is suppressed through frequency control and mind control, but now they have also added the distance between us. Distance between us is also their friend. Together, our energetic fields comingle and we can sometimes even communicate without words, even if just through a facial expression. Body language also speaks volumes. Together, we feel safer and connected, so that we know we have support during this very frightening time. Separated and masked, we are afraid to even engage another human, lest they recoil in fear of our germs. We always assume everyone believes the lie because they are masked. But we are all masked so we can buy food. What a state to live in.

Our new home is far from the madness of “civilization.” We have gotten more off the grid and are trading labor for housing. We are still making orgonite and teaching, I am working on writing and plan to release another book, and we are taking care of animals and learning how to work the land. We have a place to grow food now and have reduced dependency on the dollar drastically. We feel like God is looking out for us. We have gifted great amounts of orgonite and as I was planning the summer gifting trips, we were suddenly sequestered in our new life, given by God, because who else could come up with this? It is a dream come true to get back to the land and what’s real. We also have felt very unsafe in this increasingly hostile world. Now is a great time for everyone to make and gift orgonite locally where they live, since travel has become unsafe and sometimes even impossible. There are thugs with guns and badges swarming everywhere now to generate income for the state and bring more misery to the humans, thus food for the parasites. It is time to stay near our homes and really look inside ourselves. We can’t continue in the world the way we were.

The sky is ours, so it’s time to work on cleaning up the deeper levels of parasitic infestation on Earth. If you have not yet reclaimed your sky, it’s time to do so. It is easy with orgonite. The hard part will be disconnecting from the parasitic network, which will suppress your sky-cleaning abilities and other etheric gifts. Most people are tied to this artificial network, mind, body and spirit. It is the symbiotic relationship that has to be broken, and this is painful to both parties. In this case, the parasite needs us to feed, and we have come to need them for our basic needs, like utilities and a means to trade, and now also for the energetic tether that we’ve become accustomed to. Humans have forgotten how to think for themselves and the tracker thinks for them. It creates the thoughts the parasite needs, and right now that is fear. Everyone is scared. Orgone energy is the energy of life, love, and creation. It is the energy of God, which needs to be increased to combat the energy of satan, which is death, fear, and destruction. Now that we have reclaimed the sky and weather, it’s time to destroy evil and eradicate the parasites completely. We are well underway, as can be seen by their struggles in the sky. We have to keep increasing OR and we need to say no once and for all. The breaking point will come and there will be no return, whether you are absorbed into the collective AI or you resist. Once you leave the matrix you can’t return.

airlock grades the Gharnef archetype

so, I got a random hankering to start a text post series where I launch myself off on reviews of each character from a certain villainous archetype in Fire Emblem -- and hey, it’s a reasonably nice time of the year to be doing posts like these, what with that new upcoming entry that we learn more about each day, isn’t it?

to kick off the festivities, I’m doing one of my favorites -- let’s see who wore the heavy robes better!

(do note: under cut are spoilers for... everything, and also a significant amount of me criticizing or blamming characters that you might like. you’ve been warned! but if you’d still persist, you childish sword lord, then come along and meet my challenge-)

the man himself

although the execution suffers from myriad flaws -- of which several can be touted to stem from storage space limitations in FE1 and FE3, but are inexcusably retained in the remakes -- it’s not for no reason that this fellow spawned a lengthy line of imitators.

the detail of his backstory and motivation is brillant; he’s a perfectly understandable villain without being remotely redeemable -- a much-needed class in antagonist writing for more recent entries of the series. he’s also effective as a terrifying, genuinely threatening villain, implacable and powerful.

unfortunately, however, his excellently written characterization is largely confined to flavor; it fails to inform his actions or the flow of the plot, and so, he tends to come across as a plot device instead of a character. even his takeover of Khadein is written very powerfully for something that isn’t seen and barely influences any of the game’s events. and although his sheer ambition in withholding Falchion to eventually betray Medeus ends up coming across as a plot action instead of something steeped in his essence. and this all to say nothing of his second appearance, where he fully forgoes being a character and behaves indistinguishably from a non-sentinent madness-inducing talisman.

overall, he’s a splendid concept for a villain that is ultimately laid low in execution, largely because, back in his day, the text wasn’t big enough to comfortably carry him, and the more recent incarnations were ineffective in expanding it despite having more than enough room to do so.

I also docked a point or two for being an antisemitic/anti-roma stereotype in his earlier incarnations, what with the hooked nose and rare darker skintone; the remakes thankfully eschew this by swapping out the nose and making the skintone outright inhuman, but the more recent Heroes design, while an improvement on many fronts, seems to roll back on this one.

unlike the above-mentioned, this one was in a remake that changed a lot of things; I mention this as a healthy preface to the fact that I am only familiar with his more recent incarnation!

like Gharnef above, he’s an unforgivable, but genuine villain; while a lust for power is hardly fresh as far as motivations go, the game does reasonably well at establishing that he’s already powerful and influential, and has fallen to cruel orthodoxy in a bid to eliminate threats to his power at all costs -- in other words, his characterization is timelessly realistic.

unfortunately, however, that much is all text, if not outright fanon; the story proper restricts him to behaving as an unconvincing cacklefiend playing at a kidnap-the-princess plot that the princess in question should’ve been too strong and too smart to fall prey to. making Celica a somewhat willing hostage instead of a helpless captive was a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t cover the distance; it would have been far more interesting if Jedah had gotten the chance to overpower Celica in the arena of genuine manipulation through theological debate -- and on the other coin of things, I’m sure his preying on Celica’s fears would seem a lot more organic if not for how dedicated the game is to telling her that she’s wrong before she even takes the steps across the point of no return.

he’s much like the original Gharnef in being an intriguing concept that falls flat on execution, although with both of those qualities amped up -- even more interesting in theory, even flatter in practice.

I believe I’ve said it a number of times and I’ll say it again: Manfroy is a manipulative villain in a setting full of people who don’t need manipulation to make bad decisions and ruin their own lives. he comes across as a plot device at the best of times, and as a null factor at the worst of times; he brings nothing to any cutscene that he appears in.

Seliph’s visit to the Yied Shrine alludes to his backstory -- that which he shares with the rest of the cult -- but this instance is even poorer than previous examples at establishing a plot presence; it not only fails to inform Manfroy’s choices in any interesting way, but it’s also outright contradicted by his actions sometimes (cfr: withholding the Naga tome, in a move that brings Gharnef’s playbook to mind but makes no sense at all for Manfroy).

points have been docked again for racial stereotyping, also; the sprite alone doesn’t make it very evident but he’s also got a face that can be used as a fishing pole.

Veld is a step beneath even Manfroy, as yet another pointless manipulative villain -- notorious for stealing a slice of agency from one of the far more genuine antagonists of the setting -- who doesn’t make his presence felt at all. I was halfway tempted to consider Raydrik the actual Manfroy here, even.

Binding Blade, for all its highly repetitious usage of archetypes (being, in fact, arguably responsible for making them a thing in the first place, where they were previously just repetitive Kaga quirks), seems to have eschewed the Gharnef. this actually somewhat works in its favor; although the game’s plot is ultimately one of the shallower ones in the series, the lack of a core manipulative villain puts the focus on the self-interested factionalism that each country suffers from as they fail to mobilize a resistance against the primary villain. so, overall, an approach that would have worked out great in Jugdral.

where Binding Blade had succeeded in building a plot that doesn’t need a Gharnef, its prequel was successful in the opposite: creating one of the most effective incarnations of the archetype to date, and making him front and center, to boot.

although all Gharnefs thus far have been manipulative villains, Nergal and his cronies are the first ones who show true skill in manipulation -- as in, conning people into acting against their interests, in situations where they otherwise would not have. through this, he cements himself as the primary antagonist and driver of the plot, where his predecessors were content, if dishonest, in serving a greater evil. and he brings very perceptible weight to the position, specially in the scenes where he presses the buttons of the heroes; although he fails to ultimately discourage them from defeating him, it comes across as a result of heroic strength, not of ineffective villainy.

that said, however he shimmers and shines as the heavy, he’s somewhat held back by his backstory -- one that only partially succeeds at informing his actions (however compelling it is when it does manage to do so), and worse, is largely locked to second-playthrough bonuses, where the story would’ve benefitted much more from naturally doling out his secrets along the way.

I also docked a half-point because the pseudo-turban and goatee arguably veer into the racial stereotype territory again, although he at least has the point-for of not having an outright gonk design (even when the turban goes off). I should be clear: it’s not that I oppose having nonwhite/nonwestern elements on an antagonist at all, it just comes across rather poorly when certain elements are only seen on antagonists, and especially if it’s always on the ugly ones.

Lyon is the apex of plot-driving gharnefs, plain and simple. undeniably sympathetic, but impossible to save, whether he’s too far gone or was never redeemable to begin with -- and in fact, this ambiguity is easily the most brillant aspect of all of the writing in Sacred Stones.

he’s characterized effectively from wire to wire: his appearance, mannerisms and fond flashbacks do an excellent job of disarming the player while setting them up for a staggering plot twist, but the game is also not too hesitant to bring the plot twist to fruition and saves enough time to keep building on him past the point when the big secret is out -- sidestepping a pervasive trap that otherwise often causes plot twists to weaken stories. and all the way to the end, it’s difficult to narrow his character down to one narrative that doesn’t feel strictly like a personal interpretation; there are as many Lyons as there are players, right down to the point where he comes across differently depending on whether you’re playing as Eirika or Ephraim!

there’s also credit to be given to the remainder of the cast that effectively props him up; because he has underlings that behave strongly on their own motivations -- and sometimes beyond even Lyon’s control -- he spares himself from behaving as a plot device to focus fully on serving as the genuine core of the story as a whole. I suppose he’s a good delegator if nothing else, eh?

unlike the above, Sephiran fails crucially in one regard: he’s set up as an extremely endgame plot twist, which, coupled with a frantic, breathless third act that insuffices to fully explore the implications of the reveals it dishes out, causes his reveal to land closer to shock value than to the completion of an arc.

while his backstory is breathtakingly fascinating, it serves exclusively as a footnote to eulogize him with; it’s not just that his actions don’t seem to be informed by it, but rather that his actions completely lack weight in the plot, making it even somewhat arguable to class him as a Gharnef at all. in Path of Radiance, he only appears as an irrelevant mystery, and Radiant Dawn coming out to accredit him for some number of Ashnard’s deeds fails to budge that one’s sheer weight and doesn’t change perspectives.

it’s quite a shame, because in concept, he could’ve been the next Lyon; but the execution is painfully fragile, and amidst the complex web of characters and plots in Tellius, his greater-scope motions fail to be felt whatsoever until the late chapters of Radiant Dawn’s Part 3.

it’s not for no reason that this guy is the only major antagonist that Awakening doesn’t let you trip over still alive and kicking somehow. he is 100% plot device, adds nothing to the story or to any single scene that he appears in, lacks in personality, doesn’t present any sort of challenge that isn’t erradicated without fanfare by the protagonists, and doesn’t even have any sort of a backstory.

and he’s a racist stereotype on top of all that, so he doesn’t even get a mercy point like his similarly irrelevant predecessor from Thracia 776.

The Monsters of In/Spectre Are Everywhere, Even on the Internet

  As a kid, I was both enamored with and totally terrified of supernatural monsters. That sentiment primarily came from my religious upgringing, but anime was also a factor, which I'll blame on early exposure to the 80s Vampire Hunter D OVA. Live-action movies played a role, as well. I cowered at the TV any time I stumbled across trailers for Francis Ford Coppolla's Dracula (thanks for the nightmares, Gary Oldman). There was something far more disturbing to me about a vaguely 'realistic' depiction of the supernatural, performed by actual people, more so than any hand-drawn renditions of ghoulish beasts. It amplified my fear that those scary beings might be more real than I wanted to believe, and I was terrified of encountering something demonic. 

  Unlike my terror-fueled childhood visions on this topic, In/Spectre shows humanity to be far less impotent in this regard. Humans in this series can regulate, create, and destroy the supernatural, and are even capable of becoming (at least partially) mystical creatures themselves. However, In/Spectre is nuanced enough to avoid making this a one-sided narrative gimmick: paranormal beings are not completely helpless or disempowered by humans. Rather, the show depicts an intriguing interplay between humans and the supernatural; a fluid dynamic with checks and balances on both sides. In/Spectre offers a unique depiction of supernatural creatures, which makes for a refreshing and gratifying viewing experience.

  The Basic Premise of Kotoko's Character

                         The very premise of In/Spectre's protagonist Kotoko offers a unique portrayal of supernatural monsters, and how they connect with humans. Episode one reveals to us that 15-year-old Kotoko lost her right eye and left leg in order to become the Goddess of Wisdom, an intermediary who helps investigate and solve pressing issues faced by spirit beings. Essentially, Kotoko helps regulate the spirit world using her own human intellect. You'd think the realm of the dead would find and choose a ghostly, non-mortal detective to deal with their own problems, right? Nope. In/Spectre provides aficionados of all-things-paranormal a unique, satisfying genre-twist by making spirits seek guidance from a human protagonist, upending the usual narrative trope where humans are the ones looking for preternatural counsel.

As with all things in matters of art, though, it's probably debatable whether or not Kotoko is truly 100% human considering she was granted such a lofty status by the spirit realm. But if she does possess superhuman abilities of some sort, she has yet to display them. One of Kotoko's charms is that she uses her natural brain power to find her way out of dicey situations, even when she's talking to a giant river snake or up against something as fierce as Steel Lady Nanase. And this lack of preternatural powers is what makes Kotoko physically vulnerable to the spiritual creatures she deals with. That's where her more questionably-human 'boyfriend' Kuro comes in as a balancing co–protagonist.

  Kuro: To Be (Human), or Not to Be

                         After being forced by his family to eat both mermaid flesh and a Kudan (a yokai that dies after predicting the future), Kuro Sakuragawa transformed into a hybridized being: at once a person yet also non-human, capable of resurrecting himself after being killed, poisoning yokai with his own body, and seeing and choosing future events. As someone more on the supernatural side of things compared to Kotoko, Kuro makes for a great character contrast to Kotoko's decidedly human intellectual strengths. The multi-episode battle with Steel Lady Nanase serves as as a prime example: Kuro brutally goes toe to toe with the beam-wielding monster, while Kotoko goes online and uses her mental prowess to try to eliminate their ghoulish enemy. In/Spectre certainly knows how to use its two protagonists in complementary and compelling ways. 

  Another point of interest is how Kuro's family acts intentionally diabolical, in a way that makes them crueler and more fiendish than any monster in the series. The Sakuragawa family's willingness to brutally deceive their closest kin by feeding them yokai flesh stands as a sharp contrast to other recent fantasy-based anime, such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, where demons prey on human flesh for sustenance and power. In/Spectre alters that: humans consume demons in the quest for wealth, fame, power, and the ability to predict the future. This thematic alteration also takes shape in how spirits view Kuro. Most of them find Kuro absolutely terrifying for a variety of reasons, a likely one being his ability to poison yokai who eat his flesh. Compare this plot element to most supernatural media, where the humans are usually the ones deathly afraid of demonic spirits/ghosts/fill-in-the-blank.

Kuro and his family add another layer of depth to In/Spectre's narrative repertoire, by making humans a frightful and comparatively crueler presence in contrast to the monsters in the series. In terms of a real life takeaway, the actions of the Sakuragawas offer a stark message: the exploitative pursuit of personal power can transform us into creatures who are far more malevolent, and more demonic, than any supernatural beast or spirit.  And now for my final example...

  You Can Blame Everything on the Internet

The Steel Lady Nanase arc is In/Spectre's meatiest story thus far. Beginning at episode three, it traces the mysterious alleged death of a controversial popstar named Nanase Karin, who died after a steel beam fell on her one rainy night. A faceless, ghostly version of Nanase Karin appears, and uses a metal beam—similar to the one responsible for her death���as her murder weapon. The internet deems her 'Steel Lady Nanase.' The truly fascinating part about this arc is the explanation behind Steel Lady Nanase's existence. Kotoko reveals that the ghastly creature is a 'monster of the imagination,' created and manifested physically by the collective imagination and will of millions of people (a collective will manipulated all along the way by Rikka, who alters future events just like her cousin Kuro does). More than anywhere else in the show, this is the best example of human reality dictating the supernatural. Spirits seem to exist on their own elsewhere in the series (such as a spirit from a person who died), but Steel Lady Nanase comes into existence primarily through the internet's collective belief in what turns out to be a lie. Plenty of supernatural fiction features beasts who exist and act completely external to—or separate from—human behavior, words, etc. In/Spectre forges its own distinct take on the aforementioned trope by featuring a supernatural monster who is permeable to—and in fact created by—human imagination.

  Unfortunately, it turns out that conjuring a murderous monster into existence comes with some problems. The fictive Steel Lady Nanase goes on a rampage and starts killing actual humans, and even though people are fearful of her, the only way to destroy her is by undoing collective belief. It takes Kotoko's sly wit and penchant for fiction to unravel the Internet's certainty of the ghoul's existence. This plot point displays an unfortunate truth pertinent for our current digital age: any Internet lie told convincingly enough and believed by enough people can evolve into 'monsters' that affect the 'real' world (Internet leaks and rumors in all their forms are no trivial matter). It makes the truth about anything difficult and nigh-impossible to uncover when millions of people have access to, and share, countless discussion posts, news articles, memes, and alleged 'facts' without vetting the information first.  From the central plot, to the characters, to the way it addresses the Internet itself, In/Spectre tackles the connection between humans and the supernatural with sparkling finesse and originality. Instead of settling into well-worn tropes of how humans and spiritual beings relate, In/Spectre carves its own path and narrative trail to great success.  What else about In/Spectre intrigues you when it comes to humans and the supernatural? “I figured it would not take you long to show up,” Madara muses, back turned in a gesture of confidence as the Uchiha brothers follow. He doesn’t even glance behind, all too sure of himself, his power, and their loyalty to him.

If only he knew.

Stepping evenly beside his brother, Sasuke’s face is masked into a facade so blank it’s almost inhuman. His eyes, no longer red, are the same dark shade as the rest of the Uchiha coven. The coven started so many hundreds and hundreds of years ago by the man now walking before him.

A man he’s despised for a while now...but tonight - until he has reason otherwise - he feels nothing but burning hatred.

Hinata - the little witchy miko descendant he’s been studying since discovering her - has fallen into the patriarch’s hands. Had this happened back when the pair first met, he’d think nothing of it. After all, those who bear the blood of the old miko - those said to convene with gods and spirits - could very well be dangerous. Their magic, rooted deep in the Shintō mythologies - is in fact very real, like many other old tales from other lands. And those same magics could, when strong enough, enslave those like them: vampires, werewolves, harpies...any Nightwalker breed was susceptible to the influence of their energy.

For while a Nightwalker has power to change what lies within...the witches have that which bends beyond. Be it an element, like fire or water...or the will of another living being.

At first, she’d been a curiosity: after saving her life from another vampire, Sasuke had made to drug her, convince her it was all a dream. But she’d used those very powers on him. Powers he’d assumed, like many Nightwalkers, to be myths...just as they are to the humans. But that night, she proved him wrong...and fascinated him.

They met again later, the Hyūga understandably paranoid. But they’d reached a kind of truce: he’d help keep an eye on her, and keep her safe from any threats beyond the mortal. And she, in turn, would let him keep researching into bloodlines thought long lost after Japan moved to eradicate her kind. For a time, it worked perfectly. The pair became familiar with each other...and he might have even dared to call them friends.

But his role as an enforcer - a top officer of upholding Nightwalker laws under Madara himself - is a dangerous one. After a botched fight against hunters, those who try to eradicate Nightwalker kinds, Sasuke was wounded...with silver. The greatest weakness of any non-human. Desperate, he’d gone to her, thinking she could use her magic to will away the wound. But she wasn’t trained in such things. Had no inkling how to begin.

So she’d instead given him healing of another kind...in the form of human blood. And not just any blood, as he learned after the dose took effect. Miko, as it turns out, have powerful life forces...enough to completely heal a silver wound with hardly a trace of scar.

And that...was what caught Madara’s attention.

Sasuke’s paranoia grew in bounds after that. He had no idea what Madara would do, should he ever come into contact with her. Would he kill her, to ensure she never tried to rise against him? Would he enslave her, as he’s done to other Nightwalkers who owe him debts? So Sasuke urged her to be careful, kept as much spare time watching her as he could...but doing so would only raise more suspicion.

Then, tonight...it finally happened. He had her taken. And Sasuke has no idea why.

And that terrifies him.

All this passes back through his mind in a blink. While he doesn’t want Hinata to die - he’d honestly rather die himself at this point - nor does he want Madara sinking his claws into her. He’s seen it first hand: a harpy hybrid - mixed blooded beings rare in their world - has already fallen into that very trap, owing him a life debt. And of course his foolish brother ended up smitten with her, struggling even now to free her.

Sasuke thought he’d never know that pain, that desperation, of having someone you care for under Uchiha Madara’s thumb.

...but now he does.

“What are you going to do with her?” he asks bluntly, having no more time or patience for manners. “And then she overpowered you - likely by surprise, and yet...your failure is still unacceptable, Sasuke. You have, again and again, exposed a human to the Nightwalker world. You are in no position to dictate how I handle this from now on.”

“Their kind do not use debt as a bartering system as we do. Not as strictly. It was her choice, one she made freely. If anything...your actions tonight are what may have sparked the possibility of her becoming your enemy by kidnapping her under no circumstance but your paranoia...and greed.”

Dark brows lift just a hair at the accusatory tone. “...you speak boldly for one of your position,” Madara murmurs.

“If anything, is it not wise that I do?”

A pause...and then a humored scoff. “...I’ll consider your position. But for now...why don’t we have a little chat?” He takes a door handle, pulling it open to reveal his office.

Within, sitting in a chair with Shisui at her side, is Hinata. To Sasuke’s surprise, she doesn’t appear frightened...but perks up as she sees him. “...Sasuke-san!”

“Apologies my dear,” Madara offers, tone pleasant as always. “He had a bit of a...delay upon arriving. But we’re all here now. We can finally have a...civilized conversation.”

Sasuke, however, is hardly listening. He’s instead watching Shisui...one of the few that he and his brother trust. An ally in the most literal sense.

That being against the fourth man in this room.

Hinata already guessed once at their ultimate plot...hopefully Shisui forewarned her of anything she needs to know.

While he doesn’t want her dragged into it...she might make a crucial piece for bringing about their goal. And if she’s already entangled...it might also be her only bid for freedom.

     Sooo this is kinda random and I know it didn't really...go anywhere, but I had yet another long day, and it's late, I'm tired, and had a lot of trouble with this prompt OTL My bad, guys.      But this is more of the Nightwalkers crossover, the next part after 162: mostly just establishing banter between the brothers and Madara, trying to set up the circumstances going on in their coven right now...that being the divide over Madara's leadership. Some are still deathly loyal, and some want change. And to urge change in someone immortal to time...well...you have to get a little desperate.      Itachi, Sasuke, and Shisui are pretty much the only ones who are actively plotting against Madara...mostly because you have to be stupidly careful: you can't really risk asking anyone else, because word could get back, and...you'd be dead before you could blink.      But Sasuke's getting desperate now that Hinata's involved. Hopefully his urgency doesn't muck things up...      Anyway, I...really need sleep, so I'ma call it a night. Hopefully I'll have better time / muse for tomorrow's prompt. But! Thanks for reading!

All the Difference in the World

It seems almost contradictory to think of shining a light on dystopias. And there’s a certain element of “Why should we?” when history offers a damning surplus of cautionary tales and the future beckons with innovation yet too murky to fully judge. Here we are at the pivot. The pendulum swings without a concrete place to land and opinion drowns consideration. Meanwhile, the clock ticks on; we vacillate like a metronome as spectacle draws attention.

Thus, herein lies our quandary. We can speculate, but we can’t know. We can weigh, but far from settle. Literature presents some longed-for clues, except less discerning eyes are prone to over-simplify the essentials.

After all, non-literary figures frequently cite Orwell as science fiction’s most incisive voice and I agree that there’s grain of truth there. But I can’t help but feel somewhat sorry for poor old George, languishing in his premature grave, largely misread and far too easily utilised to justify all manner of dubious agendas. Quote-mining? Never a good idea. It’s like taking the moral high ground; there really is only one way to go. As for the ghost of the writer? There are two words you need to embrace: context and oeuvre. And in this case, I suspect he’d also like his name back. Because anyone of sober mind really would.

So if not Orwell, then who? If not a partial analogy, then where resides completion? And I hesitate at this juncture because parallelism is never an exact measure and variables come and go. Still, it feels safe – and by ‘safe’ I mean ‘absolutely fucking terrifying’ – to place our bets on Brave New World.

Not entirely original, I know. You could argue that it’s a bit mainstream, a bit staid, possibly a bit done to death. I could trawl obscurity to find something – well, obscure. But no, because what would be the point? Huxley, to use a technical term, knows his prophetic shit.

And ninety years later, here on the brink of some digital abyss, it looks a lot like we’re living it. Or at least we will be, before the next half-century’s done.

Of course, the world was negotiating its own horrifying pre-show in 1931. Lest we forget, communism and fascism were entrenched on the eastern and southern flanks of Europe. Meanwhile, Nazism was on the rise in the crumbling Weimar Republic and the Great Depression took its social and economic toll on the entire globe. In the midst, however, Huxley drew together a vision of a political model that had evolved civilisation beyond war, or famine, or plague, or suffering. A place of continuous peace, prosperity, where the government artificially, by means of advances in biotechnology and social manipulation, keeps everyone in a permanent state of contentment so that no one ever has any reason to rebel.

Control through love and pleasure, we see, is far more potent than that acquired through fear and violence. A whole population anaesthetised, and on and on they beg for another, and another hit. Familiar, isn’t it? And somehow under your skin because unlike 1984, it isn’t as easy to pinpoint what makes this scenario the worst of the worst, or even just one of them.

We turn, then, to the novel’s climactic moment. John the Savage, having lived all his life on a remote reservation in New Mexico and symbolic of the authentic and passionate mindset eliminated in the name of ‘benign’ tyranny, is brought before Mustapha Mond, the World Controller for Western Europe and the only other man in London to know anything of Shakespeare or God, or it must be said, freedom:

““My dear young friend,” said Mustapha Mond, “civilisation has absolutely no need of nobility or heroism. These things are symptoms of political inefficiency. In a properly organised society like ours, nobody has any opportunities for being noble or heroic. Conditions have got to be thoroughly unstable before the occasion can arise. Where there are wars, where there are divided allegiances, where there are temptations to be resisted, objects of love to be fought for or defended—there, obviously, nobility and heroism have some sense. But there aren’t any wars nowadays. The greatest care is taken to prevent you from loving any one too much. “All right, then,” said the Savage defiantly, “I’m claiming the right to be unhappy. Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have syphilis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen to-morrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind.”

So it is that he rejects the ‘blessings’ of modernity and retires to the wilderness to live out the rest of his days as a hermit. Having tried – and failed – to incite rebellion in those shackled by the system, he has learned from their apathy that they cannot be saved unless they possess inside them the will to liberate themselves. Such instincts are instilled in us through the multiplicity – not least of all, our stories, our art. Without them, we are husks of our generational selves, perhaps never to be salvaged.

True to form, as we see in these our days now, John is eventually hounded to death; his novelty of antiquated longings yet more fuel for a public driven rabid by consumerist lust. But so, his soul remains:

“He was digging in his garden—digging, too, in his own mind, laboriously turning up the substance of his thought. Death—and he drove in his spade once, and again, and yet again. And all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. A convincing thunder rumbled through the words. He lifted another spadeful of earth. Why had Linda died? Why had she been allowed to become gradually less than human and at last... He shuddered. A good kissing carrion. He planted his foot on his spade and stamped it fiercely into the tough ground. What death? What purity? What dreams? And of course, what strength?

Choose your dystopias wisely, you could say. But nonetheless, choose. As Huxley writes in his essay Drugs That Shape Men’s Minds, “Generalised intelligence and mental alertness are the most powerful enemies of dictatorship.” We are the intuitive solution; we are the nuanced light. And for all of Miranda's mistaken claims, we might live to “see how beauteous mankind is.” Just be wary of the distractions.

Generator Rex Headcanon: Space Opera

Humanity goes out to find new life and civilizations...

you see, because of the “Heroes United” crossover, we know that Ben 10 and Generator Rex exist in the same series of parallel worlds. Rex’s world is simply one in which, perhaps, Grandpa Max died saving Verdona and humanity worked together to produce nanites. in Rex’s universe, aliens have avoided earth like the plague because in a certain sense earth is infected with a terrifying disease which causes random genetic alterations and often cognitive regression. That’s why the only threats in Generator Rex or terrestrial: the aliens are all scared shitless. (This is also why no magic shows up in Generator Rex: no one in the ledgerdomain wants to let them in)

However, we can see evidence from Heroes United that Primus (the planet upon which the Omnitrix and Ultimatrix both depend for their alien DNA) has to exist. If it did not, neither Ben nor Alpha would have been able to use the Ultimatrix at all.

Thus, in my headcanon, one of the original Ben 10 villains (probably Vilgax) has acquired the Omnitrix (the original one) and has given copies of it to every single member of his species, as was his original plan, and begun taking over and obliterating planets in rapid succession.

Azmuth is dead. Professor Paradox never existed. The Galvins, Glavin Mechamorphs, Incursions, and Highbreed are the only free species left in the galaxy.

Now that humanity is free of the fallout of the Nanite Event, Earth is now ripe for the taking, valuable as it is for it’s heavier elements.

Providence is re-chartered as a defense against this new alien threat.

Rex decides to try to help. He remembers the enhanced builds which Ben helped him build, and asks Caesar to see if they can be replicated. Turns out that enough of the data from those enhanced builds has been stored in Rex’s systems to allow caesar to create new programs for building them, and program them into the Omega nanite. Rex now has access to all the builds from the Heroes United episode, but in a blue color scheme instead. Caesar also programs in a spacesuit build.

Van Kleiss and Black Knight join forces and make an alliance with Vilgax to help him eliminate Providence, as Rex proves to be extremely proficient at deactivating omnitrixes. The take the name the Consortium, and travel in one of the few airwhales left uncured with Breach’s portals, wreaking havok among the human forces and slowly building an army of re-infected human evos and new alien evos.

The series would revolve around Rex and the rest of Providence trying to prevent the Murray Empire from wiping them out, while making allies with the few alien races still in existence in the process.

Also, as a sideplot, Rex could be sent to help Tetrax re-create Petropia by hacking an omnitrix to release Sugilite.

The final confrontation would be when Vilgax unlocks the master control and takes the form of Alien X. As a last ditch effort, White Knight sends providence to destroy Primus before Vilgax gains full control over Alien X, and Rex reactivates the Metananites so that he can delay Vilgax long enough from the destruction of Primus to be complete.

They plan on perfecting mutant kind many years before evolution does and with the help of a perfected Super Soldier Serum, lead that kind into finally ridding the world of all threats.

However, this was one that I had overlooked. So, for starters what makes a choice meaningful? Well Meaningful choices, are decisions that make players believe their momentary action would lead to a different result. These actions can be done within the mechanics (Players can choose which action they would do in a single frame) or narrative (Dialogue tree). A choice is only a choice, if players are unable to utilise all the options they are given in the given time frame (Extra Credits, 2013). 

Choices only have meaning when there is no right or definitive answer. In the video, David used World of Warcraft as an example; where there where some builds that were monstrously better than the others. This significantly reduced the number of meaningful choice, where many other builds were labeled as wrong; thus losing agency. 

Then again choices can have different meanings to players of different skill levels. David’s fighting game example was an example I could heavily relate to, because I grew up playing fighting games and to be honest I got into gaming through them. When I would play with newer players, I felt they would just mash whatever buttons there were. On the other hand, being an experienced player; I would have to calculate moves and see what my best possible approach was. Like would I have to predict their attacks, take into account of the character speed differences, if I cannot out speed them what should I be prepared to block against. All these choice, can control the follow of the battle and counter skill disparities.

One example that can have a very meaningful or meaningless effect is the game Hitman (IO Interactive, 2016). This game is all about choice, giving players a vast array of different methods to eliminate the target(s). After playing through the second story mission, I spent a great deal of time telling my friends about all the choices I made and how it impacted the world and my experience; going into explicit detail on how these options made me feel and how it carved my personal experience. For every playthrough, I was only able to execute a fraction of the given choices. But, hold on a minute there................ So far my description is praising the game for having meaningful choices. So how in tarnation can these choices be meaningless?? Well, every mission is episodic and your choices do not have any impact on the other missions. The game punishes you for killing people that are not contract targets, by deducting a few points from your mission score (Shown after completing a mission). However, these scores are utterly meaningless and are just numbers. They do not hinder your experience in any way. Where, all successful approaches lead to the exact same end result. However, the choices matter a lot more; due to them building agency and tension within the time frame of execution. 

Another topic similar to this is the illusion of choice (Extra Credits, 2013), where developer want to make player feel as though they have made a meaningful choice. This is either a result of a lower budget or not being able to complete a section in time. Telltale games do a good job at this where they have brilliantly scripted dialogue that makes players feel a sense like their choice had an overall impact on the story.

September 12th: A Toy World

At first, I had no idea why this was under the “Fun” readings. Like how is this related to fun? Is terrorism and missile strikes meant to be a casual hobby to some? 

Well to state the obvious, whenever the player launches a missile there is a delay and anything within a given radius is destroyed. With the middle-eastern village being small, there will always be collateral damage. Whenever, an innocent civilian dies; another innocent civilian will cry at the dead body then transform into a terrorist. Thus, feeding to the endless cycle of terrorism.

So, after wallowing with my thoughts for awhile; I thought back to choices and something kind of clicked. The simulation makes players feel the weight of their choice and visualise the consequences of their actions. 

From the beginning players are given a good visual context of that terrorist exist in the scene. Naturally, we are inclined to kill the “baddie”. However, upon pulling the trigger we see things fall apart as our missile leads to a chain of events.

Fun: UX Week 

So, for this week’s filler reading; we were given a video. The video did cover a few interesting points, however majority of the video was just rambling. The content could have been covered in a significantly shorter time. Regardless, there was only one moment that caught my attention. When Ian talked about the tennis match going on for 3 days, where the a large crowd watched the game without abstraction. Basically, a person is having fun when they are having an experience where they suspend their beliefs and go through that experience without focusing on analysing it. This is very relatable where I can think of moments where the experience has overpowered the logical side of my brain. These moments have also involved me watching a tv show and being pulled into the tension and losing focus on my surrounding (Adaptivepath, 2013).  

Playing Go

I just don’t get it. I looked at the rules and they made sense. I tried playing against a computer and just couldn’t capture a single stone (Regardless of the difficulty). I know for a fact that I am terrible at the game. However, I got annoyed when the computer; would capture my stone even after I had it surrounded. I do understand that white can make some moves that black cannot. But, I was never able to understand why copying their actions would not put me in the same boat. After a while the game felt very unfair.

Nevertheless, I do like how complex the rules can get.

Playing Snakes and Ladders

A couple of us got together and played a couple games of snakes and ladders, using an A4 paper print out, mobile app for dice, and coins as pieces. We played 2 normal games, the first with a single dice and the other with 2 dice. It was interesting  to replay this childhood classic. The common mistake we did was moving our piece in the wrong horizontal direction. Each of us came up with a new mechanic. We then played games with them being used individually or in a combination.

Ryan: You can choose to go up a snake, but doing so will make you skip a turn and will nullify your next ladder. 

Sujay (Myself): The game starts at spot 5 and players can choose what horizontal direction they can move upon each roll. However, they have take at least 1 step away from the edges to proceed up.

Aldo: If 2 pieces are on the same spot they both roll. Whoever, get the lower number is sent flying the amount of space they rolled in their choice of direction. Same number results have no effect.

Firstly, Ryan’s mechanic never got used; because one had the chance to lose something. Even though it gave you something, having a fundamental element temporary disabled was more terrifying then gaining something additional. Similar to the concept of us being more scared to lose money over the excitement of gaining it.

Secondly, my mechanic changed the game up where it fixed our mistake of moving in the wrong direction. But, it was the easiest to exploit where I had to make sure that players moved into the center. However, it significantly sped up the game.

Lastly, Aldo mechanic; was trigger on multiple occasions. It works well. However, it had to undergo changes when mixed with my mechanic. When you get sent flying it is possible for players to advance upwards and get much more ahead. Plus, my direction system made him have to add the rule of choosing the direction. Thus, it could be the best mechanic out of the lot; but it just had a poor dynamic with mine.         

Overall, every new mechanic fell apart on their 1st test or were not utilised. However, adding more complexity to the game led to a more exciting experience; because it was new and we didn’t know what to expect.

Complexity 

Complexity is created when a new element is added to a system; if the element has a random behaviour that still occurs periodically. However, the randomness can have more influence than the periodic behaviour. Thus creating a more random system. This is shown in the messenger example ("Chapter 14: Games as Emergent Systems," 2003, p. 161), where the system starts off basic. But with a inclusion of random times and more building, the system becomes harder to track and more “What if?” situations arise. Thus, more counter-measures must be developed; meaning more rules and complexity.

There are 4 categories of systems that represent complexity:

1. Fixed systems remain the same forever, the relationships between their elements never changing

2. Periodic systems are simple systems that repeat the same patterns endlessly

3. Complex systems lie between periodic and chaotic systems, exhibiting patterns of behavior more complex than the repetition of periodic systems

4. Chaotic systems behave in a completely random fashion.

Having Complex systems can be more troublesome than intended. But, a lack of complex systems can lead to very boring results. For example, “Heads or Tails” the game is very basic and has very little rules; as a result there are little to no fault ("Chapter 14: Games as Emergent Systems," 2003, p. 165). However, do to it being very basic it can get very boring.

Emergence

Emergent systems generate unpredictable results, where player can develop gameplay techniques that the designers never thought of. This sub-section covers a few interesting points. But, the examples felt a bit too shallow. A good example in designing surprise would be “Dishonored”. 

In Dishonored they gave players an array of different abilities, possession, time freezing, summoning rats and etc. Most were designed and created to work independently. However, when players were given all these abilities at once they began to combine them with each other and other things in the world (Bethesda Softworks, 2012). These caught the developers by surprise and they began to use them in their trailers and gameplay demos. Here are two examples:

1. When a player was being shot at they would freeze time and posses the the shooter. After, they would walk in front of the bullet; un-posses the shooter and un-freeze time. The result was the shooter being killed by his own bullet. 

2. A player was running away from some guards, while escaping he dove of a tall building and was heading to fall that should have killed him. But, while falling he saw a guard on the ground and aimed his possession ability to him. When possessing the character enters his target’s body. Therefore, the player managed to kill all his falling inertia and stealthfully escape the situation.

In conclusion, this can be linked with complexity where adding more complex elements can lead to some positive surprises and further improve the game. The chapter used the example of “Gearheads” ("Chapter 14: Games as Emergent Systems," 2003, p. 165). It was a good example of players helping the game designers, design more “fun” outcomes. Nonetheless, it didn’t stick out to me; because I do not know much about Gearheads.
