Scottie Maurice Pippen, Michael Jordan's helper?
Scottie Maurice Pippen, Michael Jordan's helper?
Tumblr media
an American basketball player He won six NBA championships with Michael Jordan and two gold medals as a member of the Dream Team at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.
Scotty Pippen was born in Hamburg, Arkansas, the youngest of 12 children. His family was poor. His father worked tirelessly to feed his family. Pippen dreamed of success as a basketball player, but when he attended Hamburg High School, he was only 5 feet 9 inches tall. That's why I get rejected in the athletic department. Even in the basketball team that barely made it, he didn't stand out much. It may be hard to imagine for now, but at that time, he was short and weighed very little, so he was almost like a pencil, and he did not show any distinct talent. Graduation approached and the university had to offer scouting, but there was no place for Division 2 and Division 3 universities to pay attention to such Pippen, let alone Division 1 universities.
At the time, director Donald Wayne finally appealed to his university teacher to accept the Pippen. The university was the University of Central Arkansas, a college league team called NAIA, not the NCAA, whose presence at the time and now is incredibly important. Central Arkansas was also a university with a presence in the NAIA, and only one player in history went to the NBA after graduating from this university. In addition, he appeared in the NBA 2K20 and told the story with his own mouth, saying that he did not go as a player but joined as a team manager.
However, he didn't stand out much in his first year. In my first year, I only had 4.3 points and 3.0 rebounds. He was only 6ft 1in tall. As it is, Pippen almost became such a player in college, but a surprising twist came.
Tumblr media
In his second year, he gained eight pounds and grew six inches (about 15 centimeters) in height, when Pippen began to gain confidence. He scored 18.5 points and 9.2 rebounds in his sophomore year, 19.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in his senior year, 23.6 points and 10.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in his senior year, respectively, and was selected as the NAIA All-American for the second consecutive year in 1986 and 1987. However, he did not receive much attention because his college basketball team was a third-rate NAIA team. Coach Don Dyer, a teacher, began to inform NBA leaders of the existence of Pippen. The first person to find him was NBA scout manager Marty Blake (1927–2013).
He showed Pippen's Portsmouth Tournament to Chicago Bulls leader Jerry Kraus, who watched the game, and asked agent Jimmy Sexton to "please don't show Pippen to other teams," while suggesting "the team will pay the full fee, so don't attend the draft pre-camp and go on a two-week vacation to Hawaii." There was even an anecdote that the Sacramento Kings couldn't sleep well at night, wondering what would happen if they noticed Pippen. At that time, the Bulls had the right to nominate eighth and the Kings sixth.
For your information, Kraus was a bit of a thinker, so he made a suggestion to another player that didn't work, and he gave Dan Muller (a white player nicknamed Thunder Dan) who was certain to be nominated in the first round ahead of the 1988 draft, saying, "We'll nominate you in the second round, so you won't be able to work out with other teams." Marley was so obviously saying, "I refuse. "You have to be selected in the first round to get more money," he replied. Regardless of the money issue, it is foolish to refuse to work out by believing in only one team's lack of confidence to protect it. A workout rejection is usually interpreted as a refusal to nominate the team.(Of course, in the case of super-large prospects who are certain to be nominated, there are cases where they do not work out at all) It is polite and unwritten to not openly say, "I don't want to go to your team." In fact, if Muller did this and Chicago did it, there would be no way that a big prospect would not be selected, but it would have been a little awkward with the nominated team.
By the way, even if you are selected by a team you hate and push for a trade, you pretend to be happy on the outside. In fact, Steve Francis, the second nominee in 1999, who publicly refused to go to the Vancouver Grizzlies, was heavily criticized. However, Kraus was afraid that the other team would steal Pippen, and Pippen confirmed through a workout that he was an NBA-level player. Krause's anxiety escalated, eventually negotiating with the Seattle SuperSonics, and Pippen was named fifth overall to Seattle and traded to Olden Polinis, who was named eighth overall that day to wear the Bulls uniform.
He is also considered a player who popularized the concept of a point forward in modern basketball. He is a well-rounded forward who is also considered the top-class defense, game reading, ball distribution, and excellent rebound ability. Size, strength, athletic ability, and BQ can all be defined as a player who had many things to like.
In fact, Pippen was the vertex in the triangle, mainly positioning himself at the high post (around the free throw line) and turning the ball. For this reason, Pippen had the longest ball possession time and the most assists during the first and second three-fits at the Bulls. Point guards such as John Paxon, BJ Armstrong, and Ron Harper, who were with Pippen, are all hard to see as typical point guards who are capable of leading the attack at the top. Paxon and Armstrong are 3-pointer specialists and Harper was Swingman's original position. Due to the nature of the triangle system, No. 1 does not lead the game at the top, but it can be said that he was in charge of actual match coordination because of the excellent view and passwork of the Pippen. Now, in the 2020s, forwards often come out with reading rolls, but at that time, this style was really innovatively accepted.
What's unique is that the ball handling is very good enough to see the role of a point guard, but the position of the ball is very high when dribbling. Although tall PGs are common, the Pippen is more severe, so the ball often comes up to the head when it flies fast. The height of the Pippen is in the early 2 meters, but its arms and legs are so long that it feels a little floundering when dribbling. However, few errors occur when carrying a breakthrough or ball, and handling stability is sufficiently guaranteed.
However, it was a weakness that mid- to long-range shots and free throws were weak. With a 32.6% 3-point shot success rate and 70.4% free throw success rate during his career, he is a player with poor mid- to long-range shots as of 2022 as well as by swingman. When I went in, I went in fine, but on days when it didn't work out, the shot missed the rim. According to Steve Kerr, director Phil Jackson described Pippen as "sometimes a shooter." Of course, according to Horace Grant, who was with him, Michael Jordan is a player who bullies his teammates with an attacker, so you can think of it as a word of similar credibility. Pippen's shot distance was very long, so once he got the feel, he showed that his shots went in. Because of this, he held a record of seven three-pointers in a game for more than 10 years (Kenny Smith and Thailand), and when he burst, he burst like a superstar again. The problem was that it wasn't stable. That's why he became an option 1 and there was a limit to leading the attack. However, it is hard to say that Pippen lacked the ability to shoot outside, just as some domestic Jordan believers said that Jordan had enough three-point shots with seven three-point shots in just one game. According to their logic, Jordan is also a player whose outer shooting ability was greatly reduced.
Based on his heyday, Pippen was a player who scored mainly with a height of 203cm, a solid muscular body, a hook shot following a breakthrough and post-up using long arms, and a short-distance jumper. In this regard, it was similar to the small forwards who played in the 80s, but Pippen even had mid- to long-distance jumper skills. The advantage of Pippen is that it has excellent spatial penetration ability due to its enormous athletic ability, excellent physicality, and understanding of team play, and based on this, it has excellent ability to cut in the back door or pass through the screen.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, he was a player with poor shot creation, that is, the ability to remove defense or secure space through individual skills, and the shooting touch itself. As can be seen from the free throw success rate, his shooting touch, which was in the late 60% range when he was with the Bulls, was rough for three times at the time, and the open was scratched better than usual on the day of the shot, not the type that threw a defensive pull-up/faderway like Jordan. In addition, Pippen was very fast on full court, but he was a player who did not have the ability to move quickly and take off the defense like Jordan. For this reason, the team's attack was blocked like the fourth round of the conference semifinals in 1994, and it was completely blocked when the ace had to squeeze out the score.
In any case, he was with Jordan except for the 1994 Flop, which faced the above mentioned limitations during the Bulls, so he maintained a decent field pitching rate in the late 40% of the season until the 96-97 season. However, this style had its disadvantages. First, when Pippen's physical condition was bad or his physical strength decreased (i.e., when the proportion of mid- to long-range shots increased), and second, his offense dropped sharply in the playoffs (because he couldn't easily take off the defense). Jordan, the former postseason ruler, has never dropped below 45% except for the rookie season and the third year, but Pippen has only fallen over 45% since his sixth year, 92-93 season. He has fallen to .300 twice, once 32.9% in 98-99 and once 39% in 95-96 season.
In other words, since Pippen lacks the ability to remove defense and secure space in view of him as an ace scorer, his power as a scorer in the playoffs tended to drop sharply even if he maintained a good field pitching rate in the regular season. Securing space is the key because most players who score more than 20 points at the original NBA level are putting in open shots as if they were natural. For example, Michael Jordan's post-up seems to use force to push the opponent away, but after a dribble or two, he lightly hits or fakes with his shoulder to secure space, penetrates into the space, makes an up&under (scoop shot or layup finish), or turns to the less defensive side and finishes with a faderway. If you don't get enough space in the post-up Faderway, Jordan's Faderway is a tough shot, and the reason why Jordan's Faderway was so accurate is because his shooting touch and Faderway completion were mostly separated from the defender through the process described above. There is a problem here, and since Pippen is stronger than Jordan, he is not capable of breaking through with various fakes, staff, and quick instant movements like Jordan, even if he is good at pushing out. As a result, defenders with a large difference in physique and strength will push out, secure space, and finish with shots and other hook shots, but their power is limited due to limited options. In the end, the stiff shooting touch restricts almost all attack options as well as medium and long distances. Even Pippen played with his striking teammates for most of his career.
There were many excellent things such as versatility and second-in-command mind, but the best thing was defense. After 90–91 seasons, he joined the All-Defensive First Team with Michael Jordan for eight consecutive seasons from 1991–92. In addition, there were three people including Rodman in the second three-fit. This is like a wall. Phil Jackson claimed that Pippen, who was faced with the enemy during the playoffs between Portland and the Los Angeles Lakers, is skillfully playing the Illigal defense. In fact, it was very important to keep big men from receiving passes at all from the post because it was difficult to focus on postmen at a time when regional defense was banned until 2001.
Anyway, the reason why it was hard for Chicago to go to intensive defense for Big Man was that the Bulls had never had an all-star or higher center. Bill Cartwright was a good defender during the first three consecutive losses, but he was not a good player to compete with power centers such as Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O'Neill, and in the second round, Look Longley was below average among the NBA's main centers. That's why the help defense of Pippen, Jordan, and Ron Harper was important later, and Pippen, the highest peak in the field, was absolute. Pippen was unrivaled in Dinai, as well as his ability to lock down his 1:1 opponent.
If Jordan was the highest peak of the man-to-man defense, Pippen was the highest peak of the team's defense. The 6-8 long-sleeved Pippen was then a defensive player who blocked from point guard to center intermittently, which allowed him to block anyone. This ability was highlighted in the 1998 Utah Jazz and the final, when Stockton and Malone's 2-2 play was the best weapon. Theoretically, if Stockton was free with Malone's screen, he could shoot or break through immediately, and to prevent it, a defensive power forward or center had to be attached to Stockton. Of course, NBA big men switch and cover it because they have excellent mobility, and in this case, the point guard blocks Malone, so it was enough for Malone to simply score using a mismatch with a small point guard (which he couldn't stop Malone. But what if there is no change even if it is switched? Chicago Bulls have long arms between 88-203cm, and they were players who can stop power port guard from the point guard. In this reason, Peter and Rodman, the attack of the Ppman, the attack of Jae-in's attack, because Peter could withstand the power of the power.
At the time of the eastern fighting against Mark Jackson. Jackson, who was the time of Facebook attack was slow as the point of 191cm, but it was a powerful post-up and wide viewing their colleagues with strong post-up and wide viewing. However, Jackson was much larger than him, Jackson played a turnover show. However, Michael Jordan, who was a defender of Dong-class defender, who was Dong-class defender. P Peniel made almost a day in the 96 Playoff, which was his main store, and Haerway played much higher when Jordan was blocked.
However, the best point of Pp pen's most excellent points, and Jordan. Pp pen was filled with a double team whenever necessary to check their sales. Peter, who blocked explosive attacks such as Haint Hill, and graphene Hill Hill Hill Hill Hill, and he was forced to pressure on the outside. As a result, it boasts a wide defensive scope than anyone else, and it was just the strongest league in the league.
Michael Jordan, who ate the defense king, who ate to defend against the defense king of the first defense, and it is also a strong opponent's ability to make a strong opponent's passengers. The opponent team could not only have been able to be pressed because of the powerful Dipper. Jackson knew this, and it was very possible to see the media play in the referee call. Among the director of the director who plays this style of media play, but the bullpen, led by the bullpen and nickname led by the two consecutive years in the stadium. If Jackson complaining that Jackson complaints are rough, Rale is a super star.
Also, Pippen actively defended, but he always tried to steal whenever he could see a gap. Sometimes he intentionally blocked the point guard, but he pressured his opponent to make it difficult to even cross the half-court, and even after crossing, he moved his hands constantly to make it difficult to pass properly. Even during post-up defense, he tried to steal or caused a turnover by preventing it from coming inside. A figure that disproves such a fact that the all-time P.O.P.'s No. 1 steel. The defense aimed at Steel is called a gambling defense in that it is difficult to respond in case of failure. However, Pippen's ability is that he maintained his defense like an iron fortress while exhibiting pressure and steel. Still, if the underdogs Philadelphia and Toronto had advanced to the playoffs at the time, the Bulls would have completely overpowered 3-0 because they were so ahead in basic power. Of course, once the overall record itself is ahead of Bulls, and once it is not settled, Jordan can come forward instead of Ron Harper, who usually plays defense against them. Jordan is overwhelmingly superior in agility, defense sense, and physical strength, leaving the big short-guard defense, which is burdened by the physical arrangement of Jordan, who is burdened with high scoring burden and a lot of help, to Harper, who has little role in scoring. In fact, Jordan was already the most important defender along with Pippen in the team at the time of his third consecutive loss in the second half, and he was like a final weapon in a man-to-man defense that blocked Harper when there was a scorer he couldn't afford.
Of course, he is one of the best defenders of all time, including Bill Russell, along with Kawhi Leonard in the small forward position. As seen in the episode of the clever Illigal Defense, it naturally has the highest level of team defense ability ever, and the sweatshirt defense ability is also the highest level in the small forward position and the highest level ever. Defending Magic Johnson in the 1991 final is a case in point. At the time, Magic Johnson was at the forefront of his 31-year-old career and made it to the final by going from strength to strength in the Western Flop, where Pippen and Jordan's man-to-man defense had great difficulty coordinating and eventually conceded the championship to the Chicago Bulls.
Tumblr media
In addition, he not only exclusively marked legendary ace players such as Kobe Bryant, Reggie Miller, Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, and Carl Malone in the final and playoffs, but also played an all-round role as a team defense. In his late career in Portland, he gained a reputation for defending then-winning Lakers' Kobe Bryant in the playoffs, playing a rock-down defense against Corby, and simultaneously serving as an all-out defense commander as an anchor for the team's defense, which gave the invincible LA Lakers a big crisis at the time. The fact that he went to the upsets against the strongest team as the core of the M2 and Team Defense is due to his defense, which is invincible only with a skilled defense that does not rely on physicality, even though he has lost his athletic ability due to consecutive injuries.
For some time, his defense was not even comparable in the position, and among the forwards, Hall of Fame forward Bobby Jones, who played in the '70s and '80s. It is difficult to compare with other players because he is mentioned as one of the best defenders in all positions. Pippen was good at all existing defense techniques as a team defense, and he also mastered both horizontal and vertical defense, as he was also ranked No. 1 in the playoffs with his fast hands. Above all, his clutch defense in big games was perfect, not only against the Lakers at the end of his career, but also the clutch defense in his heyday was the driving force behind Jordan's six-time victory over the Chicago Bulls, who had a relatively small market and a stingy owner. Kawhi Leonard, who has received two consecutive DPOYs in the small forward position since 2014, has appeared and is considered an all-around defender comparable to Pippen.
However, this is largely due to changes in the method of selecting defensive teams and defensive kings, which have changed since 2014. Previously, coaches selected defensive teams from reporters and media, but from the 2014 season mentioned above, all existing defensive kings and defensive teams have also been changed to voting in journalists and media. It may be controversial which method has been more objective and verified, but it is difficult to say conclusively who was better among Dicembe Mutombo, who won the defense king four times, David Robinson, who won the defense king once and twice, and Hakeem Ola Joo-won, respectively. It means that the defense king is not everything. Also, unlike attacks with some objective figures, the defense is subjective, so it is very difficult to say that a player is a special defender, but who is better between special defenders A and B. Basketball is an absolute advantage for strikers, so even top defenders can lose a lot of points, have good defense that is not revealed as a steel/block (typically, Dennis Rodman's steel/block is only one level) and are influenced by teammates, so it is difficult to judge only by +/- figures. Therefore, it is easy to say that Pippen is a much better defender than Larry Bird, but it is very difficult to say that who is better than Pippen or Leonard, who is equally the best.

I could not get the “Soren and Viren!Harrow work out together” idea out of my head, so here, have a BIG OL’ CUP of dad feelings, drenched in ALL MY TEARS.
--
The doctors had recommended Harrow exercise regularly. It will help restore your sense of ownership over your body, one had said. You’re used to doing things that he never did. The muscle memory isn’t there.
Neither, Harrow reflected for probably the hundredth time in just that hour, was the muscle. He had by no means ever thought of Viren as being frail or weak, but certainly no one would ever have called the man physical.
But the exercise was helping. Both to build the muscles, and with his other symptoms--he didn’t spend his first moments awake every morning convulsively dry-heaving, anymore. Looking at his hands no longer gave him vertigo. He could even think of them as his hands, his shoulders, his--well, he still had some work to do to get to face.
It wasn’t Viren’s face. He wasn’t sure anymore whose it was.
A drop of sweat landed on the ground in front of him. He lowered himself toward it, arms burning, then raised himself back up.
“Come on, King Harrow!” Soren, doing two, possibly three push-ups for every one of Harrow’s, was barely out of breath. “I want to see that nose touch the ground! You’ve got five more in you, I know it!”
The first few times Soren had joined him in the hazy pre-dawn light of the practice yard, they had both stayed silent. Harrow’s critical mistake had been that the first time Soren tentatively corrected his form, he’d been grateful. Apparently that had given Soren license to devise a multi-day full-body workout routine that Harrow knew was impeccable in its balance and intensity for building muscle and endurance.
Knowing that did not stop him from hating every second of it, however.
Harrow struggled through five more push-ups, with Soren’s encouragement or in spite of it. You’re the one who wants to be able to swing a sword again, he reminded himself grimly.
“Next up, it’s your favorite,” Soren said with a sing-song voice, springing lightly to his feet. Harrow also stood, but with significantly more effort and not a little reluctance. He would rather have stayed lying face-down on the ground.
Soren beamed at him. “Squats! Let’s go!”
Harrow sighed heavily, but assumed the starting position--feet spread, hands raised to his head.
Legs had been a frustration from the start. The old injury dealt by Thunder had never seemed to impede Viren much, and Harrow had always assumed he carried the elegant staff everywhere for show--then he had found himself barely able walk without assistance. Even now, his gait felt unnatural, and the muscles still cramped at odd times, locking the knee and rendering the entire limb useless.
Building up to the point of being able to do squats had been long and hard-earned, with the reward of... more squats. But the strengthened muscles helped with both preventing pain and keeping his balance reliable, so it was worth it. Probably.
Soren was already moving, working up and down on only one leg with the other held straight in front of him. Harrow sighed again.
His first few squats were fine. Then his leg abruptly seized and dropped out from under him.
He landed hard, knocking the wind out of himself. Before, he could have rolled, or at least been able to properly break the fall. Now, he had to just lie there and wheeze for a moment.
“Dad!” Soren cried. He was at Harrow’s side immediately. “Are you okay?”
He sat up slowly, with Soren’s concerned support. The leg was still locked, muscles painfully knotted and unresponsive. Wonderful.
“Here, hang on,” Soren said. “This will help.” He lowered Harrow back until he was resting on his elbows. Then, starting with the calf, he began to slowly work it with his hands, alternating brisk squeezes and pressing deep circles with his thumbs.
Harrow hissed at the sensation of muscles being coaxed to un-knot, letting his head fall back to face the slowly lightening sky.
“Soren,” he said, “You know I’m not--”
“Yeah,” Soren interrupted quietly. “Sorry. It just... slipped out.”
“It’s all right. I miss him, too.”
He wanted to say more. I’m sorry. He should be here, instead. It was supposed to be me. I failed. Empty words that sought comfort, but brought none. All that he could do was add this to the weight of his sins and carry on.
Soren silently worked his way up the leg, going more slowly as the muscles got larger. He paid extra attention around the site of the original wound, circling it thoroughly with touches that began gentle and built until Harrow grunted with pain through his gritted teeth.
“Did you do this for him?” Harrow asked, closing his eyes against a particularly vicious assault from Soren’s thumbs.
“No.” Soren snorted a mirthless laugh. “That’s why I learned it, I guess--but he never let me.”
His hands stilled. “I loved my dad,” he said, finally. “How could I not, right? But I didn’t--I didn’t really like him very much.”
Harrow raised his head to look at him. “He was a difficult man to like,” he acknowledged.
“And,” Soren swallowed and looked away. “I know he didn’t like me.”
Harrow didn’t know what to say to that. Could he deny it--tell Soren that of course Viren had loved him completely, fiercely, the way he deserved, but couldn’t show it? Was it his place to deny it?
Would it even be the truth?
Soren returned to massaging his calf, working back down to finish at the ankle. “What I’m saying is that--that Callum and Ezran are very lucky to have you,” he said. “And I’m happy that they still do.”
He stood, extending his hand down to Harrow. Harrow looked up at him, silhouetted against the morning sky--the sun would creep over the castle walls, soon--and took it, letting Soren help him upright. Once on his feet again, he didn’t release Soren’s hand, instead pulling him into a tight hug.
“Your dad didn’t know what he was missing,” he said quietly. “I wish he’d had the chance to find out.”
Soren, who had stiffened when Harrow embraced him, slowly relaxed. Then he buried his face in Harrow’s shoulder and hugged back.
They stayed that way for a long moment, Harrow releasing the hug only when Soren did. He kept one hand on Soren’s shoulder for balance as he shook out his leg and pretended not to see him swipe a hand across his eyes. “Thank you,” he said when the moment had passed, indicating his leg as he flexed his knee. “It feels good as new.”
Soren cracked a smile. “Oh, does that mean I don’t have to go easy on you tomorrow, then?”
Harrow groaned. “Never mind, I take it back. You’re awful.”
The sun spilled down into the practice yard, warm and dazzling. “I know,” Soren laughed. “The worst.”

George Floyd’s name became a hashtag as soon as his brutal killing by police was caught on tape for the world to see. In the past two weeks, a new hashtag demanding justice for Floyd and all the other Black men and women killed by police has emerged. As a result, the #DefundThePolice movement has gone from a whisper to a thunderous roar, with influencers who usually post about matcha lattes and workout routines stumping for dismantling an institution that disproportionately kills Black people. And celebrities are signing petitions. Of course, Black activists have been yelling about defunding the police for decades (Angela Davis has been pushing for abolishing the police altogether since the ’60s) but now, the world is finally listening.
Activist Sandy Hudson founded Black Lives Matter Toronto and is the vice-chair of the Black Legal Action Centre and a UCLA law student. Last week, Hudson tweeted about being cut from a segment for CBC's The Current, after she brought up defunding the police in a pre-interview with a producer. This week, she's Canada's go-to expert on the subject. Hudson’s recent op-ed in The Huffington Post, titled “Defunding The Police Will Save Black and Indigenous Lives In Canada,” went viral. In it, she wrote, “defunding the police can free up funding that we can reinvest in services that provide real safety.”
Cities are already addressing public pressures to reexamine police funding. In Toronto, where Black people are 20 times more likely to be shot by police, city councillors announced a proposal to reduce the police budget by 10%. Right now, the biggest portion of Torontonians’ property tax bills go to police services. In most North American cities, the police get more money than education and childcare, and across Canada, mental health checks result in the deaths of Black people like D’Andre Campbell and Regis Korchinski-Paquet, and Indigenous women like Chantel Moore. “We need to say that Black lives are worth it. I don't think this goes far enough at all,” says Hudson of the 10% proposed cut. Small reductions like this one, she notes, are not defunding the police.
There’s been confusion about what defunding looks like, and why it’s so important. Here, Hudson shares what defunding the police actually means, why it’s been met with such resistance, and why the proposed cuts to the Toronto Police don't go far enough.
Let’s start with the basics. What does “defund the police” mean?
It means that we think the services that police provide can be better provided elsewhere. For example, there's no reason why the police should be the only emergency option to call when someone is having a mental health crisis. The police often show up with lethal force, and use that lethal force. If someone really needs medical assistance, social assistance, and de-escalation, the police have consistently shown that they are both unwilling and unable to provide that service appropriately. I don't know why we wouldn't create something new.

Ep 196: The Christmas Monolith and the Warminster Thing
"The air was brazenly filled with a menacing sound. Sudden vibrations came overhead, chilling in intensity. They tore the quiet atmosphere to raucous rags and descended upon her savagely. Shockwaves pounded at her head, neck and shoulders."
– Descriptions of the “Thing” by Arthur Shuttlewood, as reported in his book, The Warminster Mystery
Description:
In a rare dual-subject episode for us, we take a look at two somewhat Christmas-themed stories, the mysterious yet not-so-mysterious "Utah Monolith" and the Warminster "Thing." In the first part of the show, we discuss the recent discovery of a 9.8-foot-tall metal triangular prism-shaped pillar we've dubbed "The Christmas Monolith." This story made the rounds after state biologists from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spotted the out-of-place-artifact while conducting a survey of bighorn sheep by helicopter over San Juan County in southeastern Utah on November 18, 2020. Two days later, the Utah Department of Public Safety posted a photo of the monolith on Instagram, with more pictures and videos of the puzzling pillar to follow. The internet and media outlets were soon abuzz with speculation about who, human, alien, or otherwise, would've illegally planted the iconic looking structure in such a remote red sandstone slot canyon in the middle of nowhere and why. Other metal columns have appeared in Romania and California, prompting the question, are these pranks, artworks, a message, or perhaps all three? The second part of our show tonight examines a freakish "flap" of High Strangeness that's so fantastic in its details and so widely experienced at the time that it's baffling why the story has mostly become forgotten. Generally considered to have gotten its start in the early hours of Christmas morning in 1964, this saga of shocking incidents in hindsight seems to have only publically peaked on December 25th and continued well into the following year, and only gradually declined in the decade to follow. The holiday literally started with a bang for the residents of the town of Warminster in Wiltshire County in southwestern England. Numerous citizens and British soldiers training nearby awoke to a medley of piercing, thundering, clattering, metallic noises in the sky and on their rooftops, the nature of which nearly defies description. The strange and untraceable sounds would continue to accost the townsfolk, with some reporting these sonic attacks were so violent it threw them to the ground and sickened their pets. As 1965 wore on, the unearthly rackets would eventually coincide with sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena and craft so unique they sound unusual even for a UFO wave. And what bouillabaisse of the bizarre would be complete without cattle disappearances, freaky interstellar messengers, and tall, humanoid-alien visitors? Warminster had it all. All told, this series of strangeness was so beyond comprehension, and with no vocabulary to satisfactorily describe it, the phenomena became simply known as the Warminster "Thing."
Location:
The former site of the “Utah Monolith” a.k.a. “The Christmas Monolith.” The 9.8-foot tall metal prism-shaped triangular pillar was discovered on November 18, 2020, in a red sandstone slot canyon in the former Lockhart Basin in northern San Juan County, Utah. The structure was spotted by state biologists from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources while conducting a survey of bighorn sheep by helicopter. The monolith was seen being removed by four unknown men on November 27, 2020. If you zoom in all the way on the above map you can see its shadow.
Location:
The town of Warminster in the western part of Wiltshire county in southwestern England. Warminster sits on the western edge of Salisbury Plain, famous for the standing stones of Stonehenge and Avebury as well as other ancient landmarks, and known as “crop circle country.” Wiltshire is also home to training facilities for the British military.

seria if you wanna do another one for her paris if you dont
You know, I have no memory of doing any of these for Seria specifically, nor could I find one in my archives :/. I have mentioned her in past ones, but she wasn’t the focus. I’ve definitely written her story deeper than what surface we were given, but not in this format. What the hey, let’s do both.
Seria:
Headcanon A:  realistic
The disdain Seria held towards rookie Summoners pre-GQ and then some was also fueled by the fact that Bloody Rose canonically takes in rookies displaying "problematic behaviors", among others. While she didn't take as much issue with that pre-Algmos, becoming Captain post-Algmos is when she really starts to have her issues, now in charge of troublesome folks who she's obviously stronger than. It got to a point where a vast majority of Bloody Rose's subsequent recruits were "problematic rookies", her general attitude towards new Summoners driving off many who otherwise would've enlisted, especially given the recruits' age range being impressionable teenager to young adult. Thus exacerbating her view of "all rookies are good-for-nothing weaklings."
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
I’ve mentioned this once before, but I like entertaining the idea of Seria secretly (at first) getting into Pokémon GO while doing her daily workouts, just as an added bonus. Like, she hears about it through the grapevines and suddenly, bam. She’s on the app. She’s on Team Valor b/c this is Seria we’re talking about. She guards one of the Gyms set up inside the Summoners’ Hall, and the one at the Arena. She’ll vehemently deny it at first, but the more she teaches students the more willingly open she becomes about it. Younger Summoners on other teams take this as a kind of incentive to do enough to dethrone her, even though she’ll be right back on. Roy, who joined Team Instinct, has already done this several times. I would include Wallace, but he’s on Team Valor and is like the last person you face before Seria.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
Seria’s family didn’t know about the Algmos Incident until she finally decided to come clean about it, which was quite a bit of time post-GQ. No, she didn’t drop contact with them completely after the incident, but it did noticeably decrease in volume. A mix of “not talking about anything specific” and “barely talking about anything in general”, not wanting anyone to see her as anything to pity for; less than “strong with a successful career”. They were so proud when they got the news of her passing the Demon Slayer aptitude exam, and later her promotion to Lieutenant. And yet, here she was, choosing to pick up what little was left of a squad she, in her mind, had a hand in destroying. After all, she was close with that rookie and had no qualms about him being on that fateful mission.
Her family was none the wiser, thinking that work was just suddenly keeping her busy. Oh, how emotional things got when she finally told them the truth....(In a “Why didn’t you tell us sooner?” kind of way, please.)
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
(Not unrealistic, but an alternate canon)
Seria isn't gonna willingly admit that Liam's the one who got her into Pokémon GO, and neither will he. She just noticed her favorite nephew playing it while they were out somewhere and got curiouser and curiouser. As Liam is on a different team than the one she picked, she's also secretly proud of when he takes out one of her Pokémon in a Gym.
Paris:
Headcanon A:  realistic
The Lowendells, even ones that don't take up the path of the warrior, are known for their strong affinity for Thunder magic, though there are outliers here and there due to marrying those of other houses. Paris is also versed in Light and a bit of Fire from her non-Lowendell relatives.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
While she had short hair, her bedhead would stick up in the most Shonen Anime Protagonist/Character ways. Think of just about any spiky-haired anime character. There has been a point where Paris’ bedhead has resembled them and she’s had to tame it down every morning.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
I’m going to start swerving a little into my own verse for this:
That bit in Celgrad about how her parents disapproved of her joining Akras? Yeah, there’s more to that story. Paris was nowhere near ready mentally to become the next Imperial Guard commander in the absences of Eriole and Tesla. Hell, Eriole made and kept her third-in-command for everything but her true capabilities as a leader, and especially for her apparent naivete that he and Tesla were all too quick to point out back in Atharva once they disowned her.
Here’s the thing, though: Both sides of her family have strong ties to the Imperial Guard: father, older brother, and maternal aunt being very prominent members after Paris herself, who was appointed third-in-command to the previous commander so young. So, for Paris to suddenly up and try to “abandon tradition” instead of salvage the pieces was...inconceivable. Well, it was to some vocal members, such as her mother. Others just didn’t want to voice their opinions for one reason or another.
Then came her maternal grandmother, still a matriarch. And she supported Paris’ decision. This lead to other relatives coming forward and allowing her to distance herself and give herself some space. This gave Paris at least some ease in her decision to join Akras. Of course, she also has it in her mind that many back home are anticipating this being only a temporary stay....(Well, it turned out to be.)
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
(Not so unrealistic, but and alternate canon)
After enrolling in the Academy for some supplemental classes after joining Akras, Paris takes a bit to both address Ren as "Instructor" and then shake the habit while in Ishgria. Not that Ren minds too much, but Paris is a bit embarrassed by the awkwardness.

A Dazzling Catalyst for the Future
Zen x MC
Part One | Pro Figure Skater!MC AU
Tumblr media
You'd been stuck at Rika's apartment for a few days now. Much to your coach's horror and your own chagrin. But you promised after the party you would still be able to make it to the Championships—grateful that this year they were held in Seoul—and that your "voluntary charity work" would not be getting in the way of your actual profession. After much insistence that this had been your idea and that you were not being held against your will, your coach had reluctantly allowed you to stay. Not like you really offered much of a choice. Seven ensured that.
But the illusion for both you, your coach, your sponsor, your curious fans. All of them were appeased at your spontaneous 11-day mission work you'd decided to partake in before the big day.
Speculators and sports announcers wondered if you were stalling the inevitable. At age twenty-six, you were basically on last tendrils of the sport. Some wondered if you would retire at twenty-eight, others figured this would be your last year.
The World Figure Skating Championships were no small deal after all.
This year's routines had been specialized for difficulty in particular to advance you as far as you could with just technical score... but with almost an entire two weeks away from the rink, you tried not to fear the worst.
Seven hardly allowed you to leave the apartment. Runs at the wee hours of the morning were all he risked, and only with complete tracking. Swallowing your pride you took what you could. Afterall, even as you tried your best—making impromptu workouts to take up the parts of the day not overrun with party business, and filling the rest of your time ceaselessly going over your choreography and jump sequences—your heart swelled as someone else tried his best.
Zen.
Out of the all RFA—without knowing who you were—he connected to you as a performer, entertainer, and storyteller before all else. He figured fast that you were an artiste of some sort. Although you didn't want to worry him with the fact that you desperately needed a place to practice, so you didn't mention exactly what sort of performer you were. When you sent a picture to the chatroom of the post-it notes you'd laid on the floor (which he claimed looked like the position tape on a stage) for your routine, it almost gave you away. Bit by bit, as you both talked and talked and talked, something else other than admiration wiggled it's way into your relationship. The smile in his voice gave it away whenever he called. Every pitter-patter of your heart betrayed yourself.
Every moment spent together whether in the messenger or in person nurtured a shy and fluttering romance.
Even when the world worked against you both with Echo Girl threatening Zen's career and Seven nearly blowing you to smithereens, still the passion and love flourished.
It wound its way around you both and tied you two in an inseparable and steadfast bow. Like laces on a pair of skates.
So as Zen sat chatting excitedly beside you during the night of the party, you couldn't shake the growing pit in your stomach. Tomorrow was the big day, not that the RFA party wasn't a big day, but this one...
Would there be another chance next year?
"Babe," Zen leaned down for you to hear him in the loud ambience of the lively atmosphere. "Your brow's doing that thing again. What's wrong?"
You worried your lip and wondered if you should just leave it be.
"Just tell me, MC." He laced his hand in yours, giving your arm a light encouraging tug.
You caved, not able to handle that soft upturn of his lips and the gentle furrow of his brows as he concentrated on you.
"I have a performance tomorrow afternoon."
No time passed before the panic swept over his face. "Why didn't you say anything?"
You shrugged weakly. "What could I do? It wasn't like I was allowed to leave until I was forced to... and then with the party—"
You hadn't even finished as Zen pulled you along. He spotted Jaehee in the crowd and called out to her. She waved at him and made her way over.
"Zen?"
"Jaehee, with all the trouble I caused, I shouldn't be asking this. But can you and Jumin cover for us?" Zen raised your hand a bit. "Please. It's urgent."
You tried to force away the blush on your cheeks.
She took one good look at you both before deflating just a bit, still Jaehee nodded and shooed you away. "Take the back exit. I'll make sure Mr. Han draws the reporters attention."
Giving your sincerest thanks, the two of you escaped out the back—surprisingly enough, someone as flashy as Zen could still be stealthy. He hailed a cab, and you both hopped in. Once you were seated, he took your hands in his and gave you a stern look.
"The minute we get home, you have to go to bed, m'kay? You need 8 hours of sleep and no less. What time do you need to be at the pre-performance rehearsal?"
You scratched the back of your head sheepishly. "There's only warm-ups. After that I'll be waiting with the other skaters until my routine."
"Wait," he murmured. "Skaters?"
"Yeah," you drawled, realizing you really probably should not have kept this a secret. "I'm a figure skater."
He stared at you for a moment before his hand braced his forehead in disbelief. "You're the missing skater they've been talking about on the news—your coach said you had a sudden change of heart and disappeared to do charity work before the competition started... That's why Jumin or Seven didn't want me announcing your name at the party."
"Unknown slipped me the phone on the way from the airport." You stared down at your hands. "This may very well be my last time on the ice as a skater. I can always take up coaching, but I had wanted one last chance to show...to prove..."
Your voice caught in your throat and you found that you couldn't find the words. Junior debut at fifteen, pro-debut at seventeen, you'd been chasing this dream of yours for as long as you could remember. And to fade into obscurity because you failed both programs in the last leg of your career tore at the flesh of your heart.
"Babe..." a mixture of emotions crossed his face. Anger, worry, frustration, it all painted that beautiful face of his before he exhaled and calmed. Wrapping his arm around your shoulder, he pulled you close. A silent camaraderie, his understanding of the things unsaid overwhelming you as you shook.
Needless to say, after a gentle kiss on the forehead, Zen guaranteed the moment you returned his place—you went almost instantly to bed.
...
You woke up alone in the bed. A half-hearted giggle worked it's way out of you as you went to the bathroom to wash up and get ready. The beast probably made him sleep on the couch.
You'd texted your coach ahead of time so he would bring your makeup and costume, you just needed to get ready and leave. You wondered if Zen had left for his own rehearsals when you found him hunched over his computer watching—to your chagrin—recordings of your past competitions. His chin rested on the back of his hands, and his lips pursed in an uncharacteristically serious frown. Honestly it was kind of cute.
You leaned against the doorframe, watching him with half-hooded eyes and a warm blossom in your chest. "Zenny?"
"Can I go?" He said, pulling his gaze from the computer to you. His hand reached out fingers outstretched to you. "I want to see your story unfold."
Your fingers interlocked with his and he tugged you over.
A smile seeped onto his face, and the determined look in his eyes sparked something bright and flashing in your stomach. "It's you MC, you won't go out with anything less than magnificence."
The confidence rushed you. If Zen cheered you on, there was nothing you couldn't do. "Of course you can come with." Your heart thundered in your chest, pounding against your ribcage as Zen jumped up with excitement to go get his motorcycle helmets. He was determined to get you to the rink earlier, you needed the best jump ahead of everyone if you didn't want to clearly display your disadvantage. The fact that he knew that, the fact that he took the time to study your style and technique and interpretation, the fact that he took the time to learn about you...
If you were going down after this, you were going down with Zen tracking the blazing wake of your passion. This story of yours wouldn't end on the ice, long after the fluttering tails of success faded from the limelight—a strong hand would continue to pull you forward into the conflagration of dazzling light. Because everywhere Zen went, he sparked a catalyst of inspiration.
And you wanted to do the same, with every spiral, with every leap, with every poise of grace. This sport had always been your dream, and into the future you were sure it would continue to be. Just now it was yours to share freely with the Adonis of Storytelling himself.
Clenching your fist, you grinned.

Returning to the gym: The new normal.
Today Toronto and Peel region moved to Phase III of relaxing COVID restrictions. A gesture bestowing on us depraved Torontonians the privileges of indoor dining, larger gatherings, facials and the gym. Like most who had a regular routine of working out once upon a time long ago before COVID ravaged our lands I relished returning to the gym. While I am no Cris Cyborg.
Tumblr media
I still enjoy the benefits of a regular exercise routine: good health , feeling strong, the endorphin high and hey I need to keep these thunder thighs in check. Sure I had my home work out and have taken to running but pumping iron is what I really enjoy. I love feeling the challenge of exercising with weights. I love feeling strong! For those of you looking to head back to the gym, this is what my experience was like at my local Gym .
Being a morning person I booked the earliest slot 6am-7am. I pulled into the parking lot at 5:53am and walked to the end of the physically distanced line which went to the far side of the building. Max capacity at my very large gym is now 46. At precisely 6am the friendly gym associate walked the line to check attendance. Upon booking my workout, my gym was prompt in providing instructions on where to wait in line, sanitation and that masks are expected but not while actively engaged in exercise: However how to register for parking was not communicated so the first few minutes resulted in everyone upon entry on their phones registering for parking. My gym has done away with the communal germ reservoir aka laptop to register for parking, which is great because how often have we read keyboards carry more germs than toilet seats.
By the time you are in and ready to workout you have 55 minutes left. Now for some this is ample time, for others not so much but I will list the pros and cons of this new gym COVID regimen:
PROS:
• Everyone cleans equipment before and after their workout (yes this should have been the case before but we all know the nasty people who did not pre-COVID)
• Equipment is not held hostage by Chatty McMChatty or the InstaModel trying to get the perfect shot for the Gram(Everyone is very aware of the time limit and is focused on working out, not wasting time )
• Staff walk around to observe and have laminated ’15 minutes’ and ‘5 minutes left ‘cards , they display which helps to keep you on track with your time.
• No BO. Hallelujah!!! I am not saying no one had BO, because there is always that one sweaty stinky person but no one was close enough to offend my delicate nostrils.
CONS
• Time limit. Depending on your workout routine 55 minutes may not be enough. It certainly was not enough for me to stretch before and after. Certainly not enough if you plan to change in your workout gear at the gym. Again this boils down to your workout routine, if 30 mins is all you need to actively workout then you have sufficient time to dress, stretch and even get the perfect Instagram shot. Anything 45mins or more will require strategies such as: arriving dressed for the gym and warming up at home before or while in line to get in.
Overall not a bad experience, I would say even better than Pre-COVID. I love an empty gym, I used to go at 5am just to avoid crowds and BO.
I had a great workout but lost so much strength . I used to squat 155lbs and now found 95lbs challenging but I left feeling strong and sexy! I felt ...
Tumblr media
I am sure tomorrow I will not feel so great but I have a massage scheduled later.
This is my very first blog post so if anyone reads this, feel free to share your first day back to the gym experience below. Thanks for stopping by.

Notes:
New-comers to this blog should be aware that the author has by this time had a beer and 2 large glasses of wine.  This posting will likely be revised and cleansed by morning.
The thunderstorms were nearby but never fully presented until most of you had left.  And then we had a frog-strangling rain.  We can always use more rain during our hot Summers...it is not allowed during LHCF workouts.
All of us fully enjoyed having Patrick Emerson visiting us this weekend.  His family is in Orlando but they need to be HERE.    His brother’s family is in our backyard, and they are turning out to be fantastic new members.  Another couple of weeks of continued attendance and I may offer them a lifetime free membership.
Andrew and Rowena are neighbors and are also new attendees.  If they survive the initiation,  they could become lifetime members also.  It is not a good recommendation that Andrew is somehow connected through college frat life with David and Larry.  Very suspicious.  I don’t think this necessarily reflects poorly on Rowena.
One of our new ladies today referred to a Barbell as a POLE.  OMG !!  I almost had a heart attack.   I didn’t really ask if she was an experienced pole-dancer.  I would never say that.
Please note that there are over 100 of you who attend here in a willy-nilly fashion.  Please don’t be offended if this 76 yo (Joe Biden demented) coach can’t remember your name.  After all, it has been pre-COVID-19 since you last attended here, and that was your one and only time.  You didn’t even bring a good looking woman with you as a memory aid.  No T-shirt for you !!
Tuesday at 4 PM.  I have devised some especially fun WODs .  Please come and enjoy.

Ya̧nomamö Offer ‘No Sympathy for a Rat’ in Blistering New EP
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
This may be my favorite effort from YANOMAMO to date. Despite the harsh veneer, their songs are doom to the core.
Yanomamö represents the collaborative efforts of Sydney-area musicians Scott Tabone (vox), Jason Higson (guitar), Clarence Wandren Albatross (bass), and Jack Thomas (drums). 'No Sympathy for a Rat' (2020) is their latest offering, the fourth EP since 2012, to join three splits and last year's full-length debut, 'Neither Man Nor Beast' (2017). Perhaps the band paint more comfortably on a smaller canvas, where there's plenty of legroom and individual tracks won't get lost in the grander project.
Like the Yanomami tribe from which the band takes its name (the meaning, simply: "human beings"), Yanomamö is bare of pretense and adverse to artifice. As they played, I imagined a group of friends banding together after another tough week of slogging, underappreciated work, just slugging down shots of Aussie whiskey at one of the local dives, then grabbing their instruments and jamming out all the stress with wall-shaking intensity.
No Sympathy For A Rat is ruthlessly transparent about its feelings, a brooding behive of inner turmoil that seems eager to swarm on the first mofo it bumps into. The title track sets the tone of the EP with a rockslide of tumbling beats, tangy southern riffs, and fuming vocals that make an entrance with brutal shrieks, before settling in for Hollow Leg-style crooning, later morphing into death-touched howls.
Following this massive stomper, we take part in "The Offering," a song that greets us with a confident splash through the sludgey swamp, only to slowly become embedded in the muck. Just when all hope is lost, the pace quickens. We're starting to get our footing again. But then unexpectedly, the song devolves into a grinding dirge, as we're caught in the undertow of a swirling vortex.
Lost deep in thought by this point in the record, "Miasma" gave me quite the jolt. It's agro, for sure. Rudely awakening everyone in the house, but not without righteous cause. Miasma is basically the ability to smell danger. Sampling the Evil Dead, Abomination reveals: "I can smell your filthy soul." For sure, the most rough and tumble number of the lot.
That's not to suggest that the rest of the record is anything other than badass. "Iron Crown" is the big closer and it sounds just as heavy as the song title implies. I assumed that iron would make for the heaviest crown, but was apparently wrong. It's supposed to be gold, at least that's what the keepers of the Crown of Tonga say. But I digress...
Hell, let's digress some more. The Iron Crown of Lombardy turns out to be one of the oldest of the Christian Age, fashioned in the Middle Ages from one of the sacred nails with which Jesus Christ was affixed to the cross. Whether or not you believe its legend, the iron crown is a great relic from the Kingdom of the Lombards in old Italy. Sure, the song may be touching on something else entirely in the lyrics. After all, the iron crown has many stories to tell.
Of course, we needn't worry about how a song is interpreted. It's a hot day and time to get a hold of some cold brews and get into some serious headbanging. No Sympathy For A Rat by Yanomamö releases this Friday, August 7th (pre-order here). A rugged ride for a hot August midnight. Come get your Yanomamö on, y'all.
Give ear...
No Sympathy for a Rat by Yanomamo
Some Buzz
It’s well established that pretty much everything in Australia is trying to kill you. So too, apparently, are their heavy metal bands. This particular specimen, roaming the streets of Sydney, are dealers in pitch-black sludge metal. The name is Yanomamö, named after an indigenous Amazonian group known for ritual endocannibalism (which itself is metal enough), and after nine years of existence their sound has only expanded further into new territory, this is self-evident on their new release, No Sympathy for a Rat (proceeding one album, two singles, and three EPs).
A lot is packed in for a half-hour record. The four tracks drip with whiskey-soaked swagger and somehow blend the collective wisdom of Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity, and Kylesa -- the latter especially in the title track, where crushing heaviness collides with psychedelic groove. The bass filters through like treacle, especially on the Evil Dead 3-inspired “Miasma” (“I can smell your filthy soul!” we are reminded), and gets a real workout as it thunders through the speakers. The riffs are similarly inspired, with an instant memorability that sets each song apart.
Tumblr media
Jack Thomas makes his presence felt with every punch and kick in the crisp and organic drumming. As well as this, cymbal abuse riddles mid-paced thrasher “The Offering” - and the monstrous crashes that happen in the latter third of the song. Whatever is being offered as a sacrifice appears to satiate the recipient. Meanwhile, Scott Tabone roars and shrieks in layers, echoing strains of Neurosis’ rawness, highlighting the troubles of war on “Iron Crown” in one of the record’s most potent moments that - unfortunately -- brings the whole thing to a close.
Australia may not be first on people’s minds for ear-decimating metal, but based on the strength of this kind of release it should be. If you aren’t listening to No Sympathy for a Rat, then where the bloody hell are you?

Can you do a jealous Mira story?
They were an awkward relationship, to say the least.
On the surface, he was a mostly apathetic, recovering asshole, indulging hothead while she was the demure head barmaid of his grandfather’s guildhall. There were so many things making something more than, at most, just a fling between them impossible.
He was gone. Constantly. On long, tenuous jobs.
When he wasn’t, she was far too busy working far too much for far too little in a guildhall whose profit margins were nearly nonexistent as, for every successful adventure one of the countless members ventured out on, multiple misadventures were returned in kind.
He was known for being a strong silent type in those days. Following his failed attempt at an overthrow of power, his witty quips and cutting remarks were traded in for silent judgment, his sneering face now hidden by a long, downcast gazes.
She was bubbly and perky and just so full of energy and could talk about anything and everything to anyone and everyone and life was just so wonderful, when you really thought about it, you know?
Though they both held massive power, they both saw the task of a mage in separate ways. She saw it as a blight, in the worst of times, and a duty in the best, to protect those not chosen to wield such a responsibility. He viewed it as a blessing, only given to those chosen and destined for greatness and, if this wasn’t the case, how was it that he’d gotten so far? So fast? So young?
They were just fundamentally different people. Their outlooks and lifestyles not only didn’t mesh, they felt on opposite ends of a spectrum which couldn’t be brought together.
And yet, Mirajane felt so different, when they were together. Because Laxus was more than just an uncaring, jerk with unresolved anger issues. And she was so much more than a good-natured waitress.
He was quiet in those days because he’d worked at turning his personal jabs into deep thoughts. Considerations. Laxus was beginning to see people for more than just their power levels and what they could possibly offer him, one day, if he were to come into possession on the guildhall.
She thought of much more than the guildhall and had much bigger dreams and desires than working her entire life away in the guildhall. She had hopes for one day going somewhere with her music and yet found herself stumbling every step o the way, because she just couldn’t let go of the family she’d build in the guildhall that had given her life.
They weren’t so different, really.
Maybe outwardly, but inwardly, it was so different. It was just, they could only act on their inward thoughts when they were alone which, while infrequent, was enough for Mirajane, she’d always felt. And she thought Laxus as well.
But even it weren’t…sufficient, things between them weren’t exactly exclusive. Or at least never specified. Over the course of a year and a half since they’d begun dating, she personally had slowly found herself letting go of any other men in her life. It wasn’t immediate, but it seemed to be catching around her different circles that she was only interested in one person and, really, it felt as if Laxus thought the same.
Truly, it did. At the very least, they had a routine.
He would be gone on his typical long, strenuous jobs. When arriving back into town, she’d ask for someone to cover his shift, go out and buy him a big meal to cook and then they would just spend the evening together, and any other time she was able to find away while he spent time healing up and recuperating before, once more, taking up the request that called to his adventuring heart the most and set out on it, only to repeat the action in a few weeks to a month.
It was enough for Mirajane. Honest, it was.
But something had changed, the previous month as, when the man came into town, he didn’t arrive at the hall with a list of what he wanted to eat for dinner that night. He merely brushed his lips against her ear and whispered something of how he had other business to attend to and that was fine. That made sense.
His life was more than just her and work.
He wasn’t in town long that time and, though she did stay the night at his apartment one of the three he was actually around, he was gone quickly again. Only this time, the job he took up was short and he was back once more the next week. This time though, he had no time for Mira and he apologized, but he was just very busy was all, and she probably wouldn’t have been that bothered by it.
At all.
Until she saw him out one of the days he was just too busy for her, he’d claimed, walking around the heart of Magnolia with some woman and she’d always assumed.
At least somewhat.
He was gone a lot. It would make sense that he was still seeing other people, even if it was just on occasion, during his travels across the kingdom. She held no gripes about this as, even as they’d lie in bed together and he’d recite his journey in vivid detail to the usually stuck back in Magnolia barmaid, he never made such insinuations. And why would he? She was certain he made no mention of her either, to other women he may or may not be seeing.
It wasn’t her business. Just because she found herself unimpressed with the attention of others currently didn’t mean he had to feel the same. Or even that she couldn’t reverse that decision at any time. Go back to dating with freedom and, though Laxus may still be her main concern, dabble in the idea of another staking a claim.
For as much as they talked, and oh did they talk, when they were alone together, hiding out from the world in his apartment, sharing all their inner most dreams, both had always avoided such a topic, so no offense could be taken on either side, Mirajane was sure.
And it didn’t bother her.
At all.
If it did, it was on her to bring it up. Which she had no intention to do because, well, somethings were just left unsaid.
But it was one thing, she felt, for him to do such things out on jobs and far away from home and her possible eyes, or those of their guildmates and friends. Though neither referred to the other in specified terms, everyone saw them as such and it would feel like a massive punch in the gut for any poor assumptions to be drawn in this regard.
Plus…
It hurt.
In a way she hadn’t felt in a long time.
Mirajane didn’t let guys get to her in those days. She’d matured and grown and immediate thoughts of love and marriage and eternal pledges of life to another were no longer things she assigned each and every man she dated. Love was fleeting and, when it fled, she rarely felt any need to further something along purely for the sake of ceremony.
But things hadn’t been fleeting. With Laxus. If anything, they’d felt as if they’d gotten off to a slow start, but were building up to something and, though it might only be some sort of spectacular climax only for a slow let down, she planned to head it up for as long as she could. To allow something to shatter it, before it reached its apex, would feel a betrayal to how she treated other relationships in current times.
Yet, as she’d spotted him there, after claiming business, walking around the downtown area of the town, she only blushed and made herself scarce, hurrying on along to the market, as she’d been sent out from the hall for some necessities before the dinner rush.
Though they were in no way exclusive, in no way did Laxus even owe her an explanation, she felt as if he’d broken something, gotten caught doing wrong, and as she drifted back to the bar, she hid her pain and concern behind the same plastered on smile she always used when something was bothering her, not even her sister nor best friend Lucy taking note of something digging at her.
But oh, it was digging at her.
She wasn’t even that cute. The other woman. At all. And she didn’t seem to be a mage either and Laxus hardly had interest for people who weren’t powerful and they were on the completely opposite side of town from his favorite restaurant so she couldn’t be that special or important and did the Thunder Legion know about her? Because they were all smiling in Mira’s face that day and how fucking dare they, honestly, because she was so nice and kind to each and every one of them, even Evergreen, and no one liked Evergreen, Mira hoped she knew, and Bickslow was weird and Freed was fine, okay, but he was friends with Evergreen and Bickslow, so he was lumped in with the two of them and oh, what if everyone knew?
What if absolutely everyone knew and they were all just hiding it from her and not saying anything to her because they all knew she wouldn’t take it well, but oh, wouldn’t they be in for a surprise, because she would take it so fucking well.
She went home angry about it that night and hoped, in the morning, this would fade.
It did, but only into something else as, while she was getting ready for work around dawn that morning, there was a knock at the front door and Laxus was standing there, sweaty from his typical pre-dawn workout.
“Hoped to catch ya before you went in,” the man said simply as he pulled a headphone away from his ear. ‘Your sister home? Do you think you could ask her to go in for you this morning? Or the whole day? There’s something I wanted to kinda talk to you about.”
This might have made her ecstatic, in the past. Before the day before when he blew her off to go spend time with another woman right under her nose and who knows for how long, anyways, right?
Mirajane wanted to tell him no. She couldn’t just ask her sister to do that. Because her life didn’t revolve around him and he couldn’t just do that anyways. Not go out with her the night before, so he could see some other woman, only to turn around and want her the next day. She wasn’t too sure now, long term, if she wanted to pursue a further relationship with him in conjunction to him seeing women in Magnolia, but she did know for sure, if this turned out to be the case, that rule would without a doubt be a given.
“I was also hoping,” Laxus was going on as she only stared out at him, on the porch of the Strauss household, “that I could use your shower? To go all the way back to my place, shower, then come back to get you would be kinda dumb.”
She just let him into, relenting and agreeing, but it was as she stood there, over at the stove, making him and the groggy, griping over having to get to work Lisanna breakfast that it occurred to Mirajane the real reason he didn’t want to go home. Or to have her go to his home.
Clearly, it was because that other woman was there and ooh, this was just all eating her up inside.
“Uh, I think that’s enough salt, sis,” Lisanna remarked, taking the time out of her busy sulking to comment on the loads of it Mira was mindlessly tossing in anger over Laxus’ stupid omelet as it cooked in the skillet.
But oh, it wasn’t nearly enough.
After choking that down (as well as two tall glasses of water), Laxus seemed ready to head out and Mirajane was mostly mad that it was dawning on her then, as he made no mention of where they were headed that he clearly was breaking up with her.
Clearly.
He and that woman were going together so well and he’d made the choice, between them, and chosen her and that was just so disgusting of him. You don’t break up with a woman by forcing her to take a day off. You don’t even take her out to a fancy dinner. You don’t wait on her front porch until she arrives home and break it to her easy.
You don’t break up with her at all!
You let her break things off with your pathetic, sorry self and oh, Mirajane was going to do it,. She was going to breka things off with him before she could him and, why did he keep looking at her with that goofy half smile he had, when he was really happy and she wasn’t ready to give him up, no way, she just wanted to be together, how they were, for as long as possible, and if that meant getting rid of that other woman, well, so be it.
…What was she say?
Or not saying, honestly, as Laxus said nothing too and they walked together, through the streets, through the early morning sleepiness that Magnolia possessed, into the heart of the town where, eventually, Laxus stopped before a building, near the bunch she’d happened to glimpse him around the evening before, with that woman.
“What,” she asked Laxus eventually, “are we doing here?”
“You’ll see,” was the best he’d give her and Mirajane wanted to remark something relaly snippy back. Something real smart.
Like…like…’No, you’ll see’ or something else real smart and snippy, but she was just too worked up and when he led her into one of the nicer apartment buildings, she began to fear the worst. He was taking her to he and that woman’s…lovenest, clearly, where they probably had a bunch of children and oh, gross, what if he wanted her to put their past feelings past one another and be a nanny to his children?
Yeah, Mira really was losing herself a bit, in her own imagined grief.
“I,” Laxus remarked as they climbed the stairs to the top floor and he pulled a single key from his pocket, “have been saving and budgeting and figuring some shit out. You know how much I would spend on cigars a month? Cut that shit down in half. Drinks up at the bar. When I’m out on jobs. There’s better things, you know, to spend money on than niceties. Though, this place is plenty nice. Don’t you think?”
“You’re renting a new apartment?” Mirajane asked slowly, confused as to where this fit into all her concerns.
“It was time.”
Perhaps, but she couldn’t fit that into the piuzzle exactly other than…did he show that other woman his knew place first? Did he?
But as they wlaked into the apartment, none of his things adorned it yet and it was mostly bare, save a few pieces of left over artwork hung on the wall.
“Freed and the others will help me with moving my stuff in,” Laxus began as, after entering the place, he just came to a stop in the center. “It’s bigger though. You know. Than my other place.”
“Nicer,” she offered.
“That’s what I was saying,” he agreed and it was kind of awkward, as they just stood there together.
She didn’t get it, Mirajane didn’t, why this was such a sudden thing. Even if she did now know he was seeing other people, he hadn’t even mentioned moving to her, not once, and that felt odd and this whole thing was strange and…
“Do you like it?”
“Well, I guess.”
“You guess?” Laxus seemed disappointed as he walked on then, to one of the closed door. “Come look at the main bedroom. And the closet it has. And-”
“Laxus…who was that woman you were with yesterday?”
“What are you talking about?” He didn’t even glance back at her. “I think I could fit a bigger bed in here. Unless you like the bed we have now. I mean-”
“Yesterday, I went to the market and, on the way, I saw you out, in town, with someone else-”
“The woman showing me apartments?”
“Oh, is that your story?”
“What story? And come in here,” he called, his voice echoing some in the mostly empty apartment. “Or, oh, look at the kitchen. Demon. Pretty nice. I don’t really have a good dining room table yet, but once I get one, I bet you, your siblings, me, and the Thunder Legion could probably all have some pretty nice dinners-”
“Are you seeing other people?”
And there was no answer to her question then as, instead, Laxus’ heavy boots were heard as he walked back out of the bedroom and over to where Mirajane stood still, in the middle of the apartment, arms folded over her chest and oh, she was mad, she was so very mad.
“What,” he grumbled, sounding somewhat annoyed, “is wrong with you?”
“What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with you?”
“Nothing.” Then he thought. “Other than the fact that I’m trying to show you my new place and you’re being a massive-”
“Careful, Laxus.”
“You be careful.” But he coughed, after he said this, and looked at his feet. Feeling her bright blue eyes bore wholes into the side of his head, he complained, “What are you so upset about? I couldn’t go out with you when I got into town ‘cause I finally felt secure, you know? In my funds? I wanted to go out and lock this place up immediately. I’d seen it, the last time I was in town, when I couldn’t go out with ya. I was excited it was still available and signed the documents, yesterday. Now, after all those jobs I’ve been pulling, I can take a month or two off, and get settled in.”
But she hardly heard his words because they weren’t lining up with her preconceived notions.
“Why the big secret then? Huh?”
“Mira-”
“Why, Laxus?”
“I was trying to ease into this,” he grumbled as he raised his eyes. “But… This is gonna be my place, you know? For awhile? I like it, I feel comfortable here, and I wanted to consult with you a bit before I… But I just felt like I had to make a decision for myself first. And if you don’t like it here, that’s fine, I just thought that, if you did, then…eventually… We should try…living together. I took all the things I thought you’d be interested in into consideration, honestly, I just, kinda didn’t want your opinion either because then it would be us going into something together and if we broke up, I’d have nowhere to go and I want a place to myself, you know, because you have your home with your siblings and-”
“You’re rambling,” she whispered softly, as if her racing mind hadn’t been doing the same. Studying his expression though, she had to contain so many things as they swirled all about, drowning out the jealousy now with something else. “But you really should consult with someone. Laxus. Before you buy a place that you think that you’re going to live in together.”
“Well, I come first.” Then he made a face. “Well, I did. I do. But I won’t. If we ever… It was just a thought. And you do stay here a lot, when I’m around, mostly every night, so yeah, maybe I should have thought of you, but… This is all new for me too, Mira. And I kinda thought that if I got us a place, a place that would fit both of us that you’d just…move in naturally and it wouldn’t be a big deal.”
Mirajane just stood there, breathing irregular as she stared at him, trying to take everything in. Understand. It was hard. To go from believing so heavily that she was watching the demise of something, previously, she’d pretended as if meant little to her, but actually meant so very much.
“Give a guy some warnin’,” Laxus complained when she launched herself at him, wrapping her arms around the man as he stumbled back a bit, but catching her all the same. “Is that a yes?”
Instead of answering, she only stared up at him with wide eyes as she questioned, “You’re not seeing other people? Laxus?”
“Why the fuck would I be? Is that what you thought? Mira-”
“Not even when you’re out on jobs?”
Now, Laxus frowned some, pulling back from her some so he could stare hear dead in the eyes. “Do you see other people?”
“No. Not since…nearly a year.”
“Then why do you think I do?”
“Because we never said… I don’t know!” And Mirajane laughed then, suddenly, causing the slayer to smile at least while her hands only came up to wipe away some tears as they fell. Not of sadness or joy, but left over from the frustration that had built up over the past day. When Laxus reached up to catch a few on a finger, she only leaned into his touch. “I just… You were being secretive. I felt. And then… I want to be with you, Laxus. And only you. I have been, but I want you to know it. And I want the same thing.”
“Yeah, it kinda goes with living together, I thought.” Shaking his head at her some, he said, “Some things just go without saying, demon.”
“But some things need to be said, sometimes, too, dragon,” was all she offered, blushing again as she thought of how she’d felt, only moments before. Still, she found herself frowning as well when she said, “And you don’t begin renting places, with the intentions of having someone move in with you very soon, without asking them about it first.”
“You live, you learn.”
“Who said I even wanna live somewhere else? Maybe I thought you would just come live with me and my siblings. Ever think of that?”
But Laxus only pulled her closer again, just for a moment, before taking her by the hand to show her about the place.
“I didn’t,” he answered. “But knowing you could have thought that, I guess it proves your point. Some things definitely have to be talked about. Because no way in hell was that ever fucking-”
“Behave.”
“Look at all this space in this fuckin’ closet your dragon got for you. What could you fit in here, huh? Everything you own, don’t you think?”
“We need to talk about rent. And your lease. And I hope you know that I think you keep your apartment way too col and if I’m going to stay long term, you’re gonna need a-”
“And this,” he sighed mostly to himself, “is why I decided to forgo asking you to move in. Happens naturally, this shit gets worked out. Plan it, and I have to listen to each and ever meticulous detailed get all planned out.”
“Also, if you’re not going to work for an entire two months-”
“I said at most two months.”
“-then,” Mira hummed as she skipped around him, hoping to get a good look at the entire apartment, “that sounds like the perfect amount of time to have a few discussions on what we want out of this relationship. So we don’t have anymore of these problems.”
“You sure we can’t just go back to show, don’t tell?”
“Considering you don’t show too well?” And, when he was close enough, Mirajane came to press a kiss against his cheek, causing the man grin more openly. Still, lips against his stubble, she assured him, “No.”
