Paper rings

Paper Rings is about love over wealth and luxury. Paper rings are simple and unglamorous, but also can be fragile. Paper being temporary and disposable. The song mixes good and bad to say that Taylor choses an imperfect life with this person. Taylor described it as not having modern influences when it does and being punk, a word that fits this song better than reputation but Taylor used in Time. It's was hinted at on Reputation which makes me wonder if it was a Reputation vault track. It copies the sound of Hilary Duff's 2015 Breathe In Breath Out which Taylor mentioned on Tumblr:

Paper Rings was hinted at in the Me! Lyric Video with a Paper Ring with two polaroids (it mentions photo frames) and has a Spotify Story:

"I wrote "Paper Rings' with this idea of throwback sounds. We didn't want to use any sounds that were very modern on this song. This song talks about true love, and if you really find true love, you probably don't really care what the symbolism of that love is. Material things wouldn't matter to you anymore if you found someone that you just wanted to live your life with. "

In the iHeartRadio Secret Session (Audio in the video above) Taylor said:

[...]"imagining that I was a wedding band at a reception, playing the love songs that the bride and groom wanted to hear in, like, 1978 or something. It's called 'Paper Rings.' The whole song is just basically reminiscing on fun memories. [...] there's some fun, kind of, punk, like inspired by punk girl groups and the way they used to sing, shouting them in a really unapologetic way. [...]

A 1978 Wedding Band is a very specific reference. So thinking of songs from 1978... This wedding blog lists a few like Just What I Needed – The Cars, released in 1978 and one (H tweet) and was also in The Wedding Singer. Blondie is a clear reference for the Lover aesthetic and the song. Blondie released One Way or Another in 1978. (Before the 1D cover). The Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop is an earlier influence for it.

When was it written

Like all of Lover it is copyright 2019 for its release. It was Easter egged in the Call It What You Want Lyric video on 2 November 2016 and in the Reputation magazine hinting pretty strongly that it was at least partly written with Reputation.

It was recorded at Conway, LA, & Metropolis in London. London Boy was also recorded in both. Taylor didn’t record reputation at Metropolis but KOMH and a few lover songs were at Conway.

Live performances

Paper Rings was a surprise song in Minneapolis on 23 June, 2023, the other surprise song was If this was a movie. Taylor also performed it as a mash up with Stay Stay Stay on 21 July, 2024. It was not played the few Lover promo shows.

Rings

The Spotify Visual features a huge ring, pearls and beehive. When talking about the song Taylor talked about not caring about a ring if you truly loved someone, and the lyrics 'I like shiny things, but I would marry you with paper rings'. So why this visual with a huge ring and perfect life? To me this is about giving those things up, which fits the 'unapologetic' punk feel. This idea is also in the LAWYMMD video. Maybe rejecting a proposal with a shiny ring for a more youthful love.

In the iHeartRadio intro Taylor said the song was reminiscing on fun memories which these first verses are. These are the sections which match Breathe in Breathe out. which has lines that start with “I remember..” while Hilary was looking back on a lost love Taylor is reminiscing on a current love, it sounds both nostalgic and new.

Some fans do gymnastics to make them about a specific muse but they are very generic but I’ll add that Joe was not with friends at the Met Gala, he was with a costar that knew Taylor better.

The wine is cold Like the shoulder that I gave you in the street Cat and mouse for a month or two or three Now I wake up in the night and watch you breathe

This verse continues the reminiscing, I like the use of cold shoulder and street compared to the intimacy of watching someone breathe. Also this line reminds me of the Hilary Duff song title.

This verse is the most like a wedding band, and one Taylor mentioned when talking about the song that Jack does the count in. Taylor has not used ‘be alright’ very much:

I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings Uh huh, that's right Darling, you're the one I want, and I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this

The refrain is where Taylor would chose a simple paper ring over a fancy ring or wedding. When talking about the song Taylor described this as the ring not mattering, but to me paper is more temporary, it’s not a wedding but a tentative commitment of sorts. Taylor also describes the relationship as non traditional with “this” an ill defined situationship.

The one I want implies again there is someone Taylor is choosing this person over, she’s forgoing something shiny for this relationship. Yet the theme of reminiscing implies this is not a new relationship. Darling is not used a lot.

Picture frames are also uncommon in Taylor’s work, only HYGTG, Run and this song have a framed picture to mean a relationship. The Me! Lyric video had 2 Polaroids with the paper ring, very 1989/reputation-esque, one of her holding a cat and one with friends.

In this verse their relationship has some history of "exes, fights, and flaws" they’ve overcome. Similar to “one I want” this is not a simple we met and went from friends to this, they have history.

Icy outdoor pool

I have a post on the icy pool. Which is something Harry has been known for (also in Hampstead Heath Pond) long before Joe did handy exposition for this. Taylor said on 2 June 2018 in Chicago ( Harry was in the City) "2 New Years Eve's ago I found myself in the midst of a very like incredible 3am moment where you think you are invincible and you end up like jumping in a pool in the winter and you feel super untouchable in that moment" Taylor Nation cut this part out.

The house Taylor rented in Hampstead in December 2016 has a pool and she included photos in the Rep Magazine. A post on that.

Blue Walls

I have a post on this blue wall line and that it is a metaphor for being emotionally isolated. She also referred to blue painted walls in:

In the bridge Taylor tells how she wants good and bad, a similar idea to on New Years Day about wanting someone to clean up bottles after the party, or dreary Monday’s here. Again with complications, this is not a fresh relationship between 2 single people.

Drive is a Haylor theme also and this line reminds me of Style’s “let’s get out of the town” and finally taylor calls the muse “baby boy” .. perhaps she is singing about someone who’s ‘younger than her ex’s but acts like such a man, so.

He never really lived in Paris, he never even stayed there for a long time. Btw I'm only saying this based on photographic evidence from fans and friends out there:

Until early April 2019 they were on tour, later in April they were in La Frette recording, in late April he was seen with a fan in NYC!

In May he was in Paris for Pauline's open mic restaurant "performances".

in early June he was photographed in Paris and then in London (most of the June he was in London apparently) and at the end of June in Branson, Missouri with Matt, Zackery and David Adcock at a wedding without Pauline Imao (the mod with relatives in Missouri rise)

in July he was seen in LA (iirc with Matt and Josh Homme and Dave Grohl of all people) in late July he was in Paris but again on August 1st, he was photographed at the airport leaving Paris so didn't stay there for a long time (they were seen at Strokes gigs in Paris so tbh I think he went there to see them lol)

He was seen in London until October or sth multiple times. In early October he was seen in LA (throwback photos of him looking hot in a brown leather jacket smoking) and at the end of October photographed with his Muay Thai instructor.

In November he was spotted in London with Matt.

At the end of 2019, in December, he was pictured at an event in LA (GQ men of the year) and Pauline posted a selfie from his bathroom iirc

2020

in January he was in London, in early February 2020 he was in Paris and in late February he was back in London.

After that he went to LA, stayed there for over a month and wrote The Car.

It was around this time that Pauline stayed at his London house alone and delivered the infamous two cups one girl trend.

It was during the pandemic and she didn't have her own apartment, he went back to London (iirc in late April) and after a few days Pauline was back in Paris without him. This was also when she got her dusty basement apartment which she painted black. I also want to mention when they saw each other in Paris they always stayed at hotels cause she was renting rooms in shared apartments.

In 2020 he was also spotted many times without her in London. He was seen in Paris in June 2020 but only stayed for a really short period, maybe not even more than a couple of weeks cause in July 2020 he was seen in London with Nick and in August with Miles.

also maybe worth mentioning that she'd just moved to her apartment in May and him being in Paris in June might be the story behind "sweeping for bugs in some dusty apartment", idk, just a thought

So he never really "lived" in Paris, just visited. After that he doesn't seem to visit that often (there's no evidence, maybe he does, but I think people would spot him just like they did back then)

it's usually Pauline who goes to London and LA. It was only in late 2021, October or November iirc, after final La Frette sessions for The Car, he was seen walking with her in Le Marais, Paris and in May 2024 he was photographed on the eurostar train by a fan. (around the time Pauline seemed to be moving somewhere new, so maybe he was there to sign rental papers lol)

Also Pauline was nowhere to be seen most of the times he was spotted in NYC, LA, London or Missouri in 2019 (only in June in London, basket-carrying miserable-looking faces fighting and having a row over their phones and December 2019 when Pauline posted a bathroom selfie from his LA home)

That "moon restaurant" saying he was a regular customer might've thought just because he bought something from there a couple times he could be called a "regular customer" lol. (Read: marketing) that was in July, so he hadn't really stayed in Paris around that time.

Oh btw, Alex's aviation CO2 emissions and carbon footprint should be measured fr.

Thanks for the recap. We weren’t in any doubt that he never lived with her in Paris before now. This year is what people are questioning- did he just move in with her? We don’t think so

Breaking: Paulo Dybala no va a la Copa

This whole Dybala mess really upsets me.

This is actually kinda ironic for me because back in March, at the end of my post (this post), I wrote a lengthy paragraph about how fans’ toxic culture could destroy this team.

That supporters’ behavior who tend to compete players against e.o or criticize players, act like they have the right to decide who should join the NT and who shouldn’t is ridiculous. I mean, being Scaloni isn’t an easy job. Not only that Scaloni have to defend the Copa America title holder, but he also has to pick 23 or 26 players to be invited for his Copa squad when roughly 50 players are showing immense performance on their respective clubs this season. It must’ve been a dilemma, and supporters need to be wise in accepting what Scaloni has decided and believe that Scaloni knows better what is best for his team.

I never expected that I would have to swallow the bitter pill of my own words. Because that is actually what’s happening now, with Dybala becoming the center of controversion in light of the decision made by Scaloni.

Really, who would have thought that the player that gets left behind would be Dybala?

We’ve all seen how Dybala is a true baller this season, despite his injuries. Man be the only player who won 3 POTM awards, assisted 9 times, and scored 13 goals with 7 of that being 100% successful penalties. Unlike how he got injured 40 days before the World Cup, this time –less than a month before Copa– he’s fit. But what the heck then Scaloni decided not to call him?????

Maybe this is what Scaloni meant when he said, those who played for WC don’t have any advantages. That the only 2 players who got a 100% guarantee to play for this year’s Copa are just Messi and Di Maria. But the idea of not calling Dybala is just a total shocker to almost everyone.

A little throwback when the news of him picking up an injury just 40 days before the World Cup sent his teammates into concern. According to Cuti’s statement, their Whatsapp Group chat talked about that and he felt bad for Dybala.

But, surprise surprise, he still made it into the list and joined the whole team just a day before he celebrated his birthday with the team in Abu Dhabi (November 14th).

You can see just how happy and relieved everyone was when they embraced Dybala, even Cuti hogged him from the rest of the players.

Back to the present time.

How can I defend Dybala without discrediting other players, such as Angel Correa, Garnacho (who did well on United tbh), Carboni, or Nico Gonzales, whom according to Sofascore they are all scored less than Dybala’s average rating.

How can I explain that I don't expect Dybala to play as a starter (I don't even expect him to play as a sub either). My only plea toward Scaloni is simply to put Dybala on the roster just like Scaloni always puts Armani despite him not playing. Dybala's presence itself is enough for me.

I know the reality is kinda harsh for Dybala as he found it difficult to get a permanent spot (not only in the Scaloni era).

As in the last World Cup, Dybala only played <20 minutes (replacing Julian in the 74th minute in the match against Croatia and coming on in the last minute during the Final match).

Moreover, in the previous Copa Dybala was also absent due to poor performance at Juve caused by his injury. It really hurts to know he missed the chance to play when the country won the trophy.

To lessen the disappointment, he at least won Finalissima by only playing for 5 minutes, and amazingly in just that short time he scored a goal to secure that 3-0 victory over Italy.

Looking back at the 2019 Copa, out of the total 6 matches played by Argentina, Dybala’s first time entering the field was in the 3rd match against Qatar. Coming on in the 76th minute to replace Lautaro, providing an assist for Kun 6 minutes later. Argentina’s 4th match, he played in the last 5 minutes when Argentina was leading 2-0.

In the next game, again he came in the 85th minute when Argentina had already lost 2-0 to Brazil, and as for the last match to obtain the 3rd place Dybala played as a starter, along with Messi and Kun, scored in the 22nd minute before being replaced by Di Maria in the 67th minute.

Can you see what I’m trying to prove here?

Dybala may not always be the #1 option, but when he eventually plays, he delivers. He’s a clutch. And just like his statement, that he simply wanted to support the team, and tried not to show an angry or frustrated face for not being played. He knew this, and regardless of the situation he was fine with that. He accepted that.

And judging from how very important it is to be an NT player for every Argentinian footballer, I believe Dybala is happy enough to be invited to this year’s Copa even without any guarantee that Scaloni will really let him play. I believe he wouldn’t mind being a benchwarmer (unlike that England player who refused the country call because he didn’t want to be a benchwarmer under Southgate as coach).

So, what made Scaloni leave him out this time around?

What frustrates me the most is knowing there’s no logical reason to justify Scaloni’s shocking decision not to call Dybala up for Copa. There’s absolutely no reason at all.

1) He's fit,

2) His performance with Roma this season is amazing despite injury, while the other players that Scaloni chose are actually played not much better than Dybala,

3) Sentimental aspect-wise, he's one of the senior players,

And even more so 4) He has good chemistry with the whole team (( Especially since he's also part of Messi's close circle –Messi, LDP, Ota, Di Maria, and the Palo Santo trio– ))

5) Nothing bad happened between him and Scaloni previously (as confirmed by Scaloni himself in this interview).

Even Scaloni told that story about his son Noah’s favorite player is Dybala. Like, is that doesn't mean a thing??????

In return, Dybala always shows respect to Scaloni. Never openly throw a fit or complaint.

6) More importantly, this might be Dybala’s last chance to play in Copa America ffs!!

So, what's with the sudden plot twist????

Many people reacted to this news by saying, “Scaloni can do everything that he wants, you don’t question him”, "With or without Dybala won't change anything", and yes, it’s true. Scaloni could have called Dybala either based on performance aspect or sentimental reason, or even simply just because he can and I bet no one will gonna file a complaint about that because almost all of us expected Dybala to be there!! And okay, Dybala's existence won't give any differences since probably won't play either, but at the very least it could spare Scaloni from having this unnecessary public frenzy.

But somehow out of nowhere, Scaloni chose the extreme opposite. Which then sparked public heated discussion, and eventually, supporters dragged the other players like Garnacho or Nico Gonzales, when In my opinion the most random thing out of this situation is the fact that Scaloni chose Angel Correa over Dybala (again, I don't mean to belittle Correa, simply just stating a fact that it's bizarre).

Call me overreacting or being a bit too dramatic, but it feels like Scaloni is using the power that he knows he has. I’m saying this because there’s no justifiable reason to explain this Dybala situation, this feels like purely a power trip from the coach.

I try to respect Scaloni’s decision, I try to be positive and supportive, I want to be level-headed in response to this news, I try not to hate the coach, I try not dragging the other players, and even try to not pity Dybala’s bad luck too, but it’s just hard.

I know, anything can still happen.

Who knows, right?

Maybe Scaloni suddenly realizes that he made a mistake and is willing to make a little change on the squad list. Maybe some players try to reason with Scaloni for him to call Dybala. Or maybe someone from the already selected strikers picks up a last-minute injury so he can’t play thus Scaloni has no other option than to replace that someone with Dybala (this is very ill thought coming from my brain, pardon not pardon). or maybe Dybala will get married to Oriana this June, so at the very least, he won’t be feeling too woeful to abstain from Copa (the last part is just my wishful thinking tho)…

At last, I'm upset knowing that Dybala out from Copa means I won't get any new content of this beloved Cordobese pair.

And for this reason alone, Scaloni, sir, what you did is a crime.

Title: CHEERING FOR PACQUIAO

Well, another 'Pacquiao' related artwork by ME. 🙂🥊🎨🖼️ As I said before, I used to be a "Pacquiao supporter", in my early years of childhood until January 2019, which is my last said related artwork.

• So, for this November throwback installment, MuruKir and the Speedster Twins (Spot 🐶🏎️ & Riya 🐰🏎️) cheering at Manny Pacquiao 🇵🇭🥊faces Algieri Hungry 🇺🇸🇦🇷🥊 for the WBO World Welterweight title. The so called "PacMan" (which is his nickname, and not to be confused with the yellow hungry video game icon, "Pac-Man") lands Algieri 6-times, until the referee declares K.O. and Pacquiao successfully defended his WBO title. Yeah, what a moment for the former Filipino boxer unlike his previous opponent, which you should check it out. 👇🙂

How do you think MV19 is going to adapt "Moominpappa's memoirs"? Because it seems like they're also doing the comet adaptation, so they are going to clash both¿

I doubt Gusty would have the gall to make a straight adaptation of Moominpappa's Memoirs so late into the series and somehow fit it into the plot of Comet in Moominland, or at least I hope they don't have the gall to do it in their 13 episode runtime.

They already referenced the story in good detail in the Golden Tail episode, they've already referenced Edward, the Muddler, the Nibling and Hodgkins, now we just need them to follow it through with something more substantial, because the show's viewers who haven't watched or read anything else of Moomin are definitely going to be wondering who exactly Muddler and Hodgkins are, and what the heck a Nibling is.

They've already used up the Ghost (or at least a character similar to it) and sent him to the aurora borealis in season 1, I can imagine that maybe they would, like, do a throwback to him but honestly who even thought about the 2019 Ghost in any substantial way after that episode? The creators don't even bother putting Emma or Ninny in crowd shots or give them small character bits past their respective episodes, so it's doubtful they'd being the Ghost back. It'd be redundant to have an episode dedicated to Moominpappa's backstory adapted into a stage play only for us to see a flashback version of it unless they really wanna go out there with it. The Joxter lacks even a peep of reference which is super weird so it'd be double weird to bring him in with Muddler and Hodgkins who have been mentioned, like, who the hell is that guy?

If they want to bring in Moominpappa's Memoirs in a way that feels more natural for the final season of a show they should probably just adapt the epilogue where they have a big family reunion, perhaps interweave Moominpappa's character into it and make him proactive in seeking out his old friends for the adventure and we'd get the adaptation through his reminiscing while the end of the world is ongoing, I think that'd be neat.

You could even sprinkle in a little heartbreak and say he's doing it for a proper goodbye because if they did in fact make Moomins and the Great Flood canon then that would make Moominpappa abandoning his family for years canon, and that could extend to him abandoning the Oshun Oxtra without warning because something something he was too selfish and he gets character development when he realizes how self-centered he's been and tries to make up for it.

Perhaps that would be the B-plot with the Moominparents instead of them staying at home waiting around like in the book while the kids go off on their mountain-trotting adventure.

Honestly I just want Sniff's character arc to end with him finding his proper parents who care for him along with getting the cat he adopts in Comet in Moominland. Everyone else has been very rude or disregarding him throughout the show, that was even his main thing in season 3, so it would mean the world to me if he just. Gets a Happy Ending.

What I'm most worried about in an adaptation (adjacent) of Memoirs is the infantilization of the Muddler, everything else is either already gotten down by the show (Moominpappa's character) or difficult to mess up unless they're actively trying to (Hodgkins and Joxter's characters) but Muddler........ It's already a problem within the fandom and we know Gutsy and Moomin co. do cater to the fandom quite a bit. Maybe it's just that he's my favorite character ever but I am. Worried about him. Especially considering characters like Sniff or Toffle.

But like, yeah, you can do alot with Moominpappa's Memoirs but I doubt Gutsy writers have the imagination or brain power to manage it alongside a Comet in Moominland adaptation some the likely adaptations of the comics or original plot episodes. That episode based on Moominvalley in November is the most egregious thing they've done in the world as an adaptation and I hope they don't stoop down to that again but, yeah.

It really sucks that the showrunners weren't sure if they were gonna get past season 2, they could've done alooooot better with the show's plot and character arc structure and I'm sceptical about the quality of a simultaneous Comet in Moominland and Moominpappa's Memoirs adaptation for the final season. But we'll see.

What inspired you to write your thg fic?

I have a cousin that I love very much and since 2015 we have what we call a “Yearly THG throwback” which is: either one of us reread the trilogy or watch the movies, always around October/November/December, and then we spend around seven days talking non stop about it - it genuinely started without us even planning this, but around 2019 we noticed this pattern of ours so we kept the tradition.

This has been going on for so long that we literally say the same thing over and over and we know the week is ending when either one of us points out “we already went through this last year…”. Anyway, since like, forever, she complains I never wrote anything to her, which is true, but it’s only because our fandoms never align, so I never got to write her anything. Last year, we went again into our throwback and, looking back now, I think I went into a maniac episode and I sat down and I was like: I’m tired of crying over Finnick and Annie and I’ll write something happy about them. It was supposed to be 10k of fluff. Camera cuts to 8 months later when I have 70k of fanfic written and nowhere in sight to finish it. People who knows me knows I’m a 5k maximum fanfic writer. I didn’t even knew I was capable to write 70k of anything which it surprises me to this day - I was texting my cousin last month and I was like how tha hell I wrote 60k of words??? Anyway, that was my inspiration:)

Dark Prince: Chapter 72. The Chosen. 

Vanimórë held out his hand.

"This is not for either of us I think, but it cannot be in my keeping." He leaned forward and kissed Glorfindel on the mouth, and turned away.

It did not burn him although his fingers quivered and tingled about it. He knew what the Silmarilli were, what was within them, and it was far more than the Light of the Trees.

Glorfindel turned, and Fos Almir was there.

Another rebirth and the greatest.

His body became white flame, the sound of his cry was torn away and through it the Silmaril pulsed like heart, a spirit.

He walked out of Fos Almir like the sun, and the jewel was a star in his hand. He saw Middle-earth in all its splendour, Aman in its aloof purity. He saw everything, felt every soul, save for those judged by Námo, cast out as dross upon a slag-heap.

He said, “Let there be Light in the Eternal Dark!”

He lofted the Silmaril and hurled it. Like a comet it traced a path through the skies and then hung there. Darkness opened about it, a nothingness that spread as if it would devour the jewel, feed on its light and all other light until it covered the whole world. The Void, the Everlasting Dark. But the Silmaril flared against it, shone into the place where the condemned were held.

And it was answered.

There was green, gold. There was light, after so long, when all he had been was a houseless flame which refused to go out, to be eaten by the Night.

The spirit was aware of weight, of flesh, of solidity forming around the soul. He felt air rush into lungs which began to inflate and deflate, felt his heart begin to beat. He staggered, regained his balance. Long hair fell like water against his back.

He went down on his knees again, just breathing, seeing each mote of sand below him, feeling its granular texture. The wild scent of brine was in the air. With a powerful surge and bunch of sinew, he forced this new body to its feet. For a moment the weight disoriented him, and then his soul forged with it as hand into a glove.

Fëanor raised his head.

Magnificat of the Damned. Book IV: Anvil. Chapter 33. 

~ His eyes narrowed. He drew a harsh breath that felt like ice in his lungs. ‘Melkor. It is Melkor,’ he shouted. 

Melkor, in the shape of Ancalagon, possessing the dragon, pouring his spirit into it. Get away from thee, did he, Eru? Or didst thou let him go?

Vanimórë.

He felt himself held immobile by Eru’s will and, in fury, lashed back. All the terror he felt for the Elves he loved, the rage at Eru’s interference, went into one appalling and violent mental slam that ripped agony through a mind still scored raw.

Eru’s presence reeled back in shock and pain, and Vanimórë wrenched himself from that suddenly lax mind-hold, his world limned in one bright blaze of pain.

Fëanor was looking at him. Looking directly at him, and then his eyes flicked to the approaching darkness coming out of the North. They widened.

Fëanor, Vanimórë pleaded, No.

But it was all there, the madness of grief that had brought him to an end in his first life. And the brightest of stars could detonate into supernovas.

The brightest of stars...

A supernova.

And to do what he was about to do, Fëanor had to release his hold. The skeins of light snapped and recoiled into him as he gathered himself.

Oh, Fëanor.

He ascended like a white sun, his sons following him.

Keep them back, Vanimórë. His voice was quite calm.

He dropped his sword, pulled off his helm, let them fall like a statement of intent. They were of no use to him. Raven hair rayed about his fierce, diamond-beautiful face.

‘Father.’ Maglor cried, his voice striking the aether like thunder, and Vanimórë, his heart breaking and a cold fury filling up the cracks, caught the Fëanorions in an iron fist of will. He thought he would weep as they raged and fought against him. But he did not let them go.

Ancalagon’s wingspan dwarfed the skies, midnight shadow racing under them, his jaws open to a cavern of fire. Fëanor poised for a moment, then he moved. Faster, faster, a shooting star but, unlike a shooting star, did not burn out; his brilliance raged greater and greater. Against Ancalagon’s immensity, he was tiny, a firefly to an eagle, but bright as a hole opened to an infinity of Light, a declaration of Life set against that which would devour Life.

In those last moments, Vanimórë read Fëanor’s mind clearly. There was love there, and absolute defiance, hatred like reforged iron for the one who had slain his father, his brother, tortured his son, warred with and slaughtered his people over centuries. He loathed Melkor, but there was little of selfishness there, of self; the theft of the Silmarils did not even brush his thoughts.

Ancalagon’s stretched jaws would have inhaled a warship of old Númenor like a fly and behind them, in the fire chambers, laval flame built and built, red as shed blood, smoke curling around the gigantic fence of teeth. Melkor, riding Ancalagon’s will, was coming for the Silmaril incarnate, the one being in all of Arda he had wanted to possess, to swallow, to make his.

And Fëanor, with all his fire, all his will, hit the dragon like a meteor.

Throwback Thursday

Tagged by @shipping-through-eternity to admit publicly to the first writing I ever posted.

In November 2019, my daughter was in hospital with what would turn out to be covid before it was a thing that had migrated to the USA. There she found the harry potter movies and watched them obsessively, but had some valid complaints. Namely, that there were not enough girls and there were not enough dragons and there was egregious lack of girls finding and making friends with dragons. Enter a mom stuck at the hospital with no way of managing her anxiety, and what you get is a ridiculous amount of words on C list characters from the HPHM mobile phone game who find and take care of a wounded dragon.

3.5 years and however many terrible twitter comments later, and I'm not part of this fandom anymore, but I can't bring myself to disavow my little story. It was my first attempt to ever sit down and finish a random idea I had. And I did it. And my daughter still asks for it at bedtime sometimes, so I call it a win.

Inoue-Fulton: Stephen Fulton Last 5

Incredible fight week coming up at the end of July w Inoue-Fulton and Crawford-Spence happening w/in a few days of each other. To spread out the fun, we’ll start with the previews a bit ahead of time. Today I’ll have a look at Stephen Fulton’s last 5 looks.

CoolBoy beat Isaac Avelar in Edinburg, Texas (the fight capital of Hidalgo County) in August of 2019. He wore an interesting white, navy blue and brown trunks, with bronze Grant gloves and florescent yellow shoes. A bit of trunk detail below:

I like the color scheme (even if the random inclusion of brown is a bit Charlo-esque) and I like the CBS CoolBoy Steph logo. Shoes obviously a bit questionable.

In January of 2020 Fulton won a unanimous decision over Arnold Khegai in Brooklyn.

CoolBoy stayed consistent with the bright yellow footwear and Grant gloves. His trunks are interesting because the wording is largely on the back while the front contains only an oversized logo and a few patches.

Note the use of the 13 stars for the “O” in Fulton and “Boy” by the Philadelphia native -- a reference to the original 13 colonies and, more specifically, his hometown basketball team:

In January of 2021, Fulton returned to the ring in Uncasville, Connecticut, beating Angelo Leo by wide decision for the WBO super-bantamweight title.

An orange and black theme for Fulton -- impeccably matched trunks and gloves, along with some incongruous footwear:

Fulton’s trunks contained both a Black Lives Matter and an All Lives Matter graphic and text, and the back contained “I Cant Breathe” across the waistband, a reference to Eric Garner.

In November of 2021, Fulton faced his toughest test against Brandon Figueroa in Las Vegas, winning a close majority decision.

A Mexican theme from CoolBoy Steph (aka ChicoFresco Steph) - great look, matching shoes and Grant gloves.

In June of 2022, Fulton beat Daniel Roman in Minneapolis by wide scores.

Fascinating throwback Buccaneers creamsicle look -- light orange trunks, sherbet orange trim and inside flaps, a bit of white fringe along the side and a surprising mint green flap on the back of his trunks. He matched with light orange shoes and orange Grant gloves.

Can’t wait for July 25th in Tokyo!
