OwlCrate Unboxing

Through the Seasons August 2023

August's theme is Through the Seasons. The colour scheme seems to be just... winter. It looks like OwlCrate might be going through a weak few months. They do have a trend of ups and downs.

The featured book is "Omen of Ice" by Jus Accardo. I hadn't even heard of this book, and the blurb doesn't sound particularly thrilling. The cover is completely redesigned, and really, really different. To be honest, I don't like either cover much. The standard edition is boring, and the redesign is amateurish. The edges are sprayed (thank god OwlCrate have started doing that again) light blue, and there's foiling on the hardcase, and two different full artwork endpapers. The front one goes really well with the cover, but the back one doesn't fit at all. There's artwork on the interior of the dust jacket, which is so, so gorgeous, I really wish this was the cover, but unfortunately there's no title printed on it so it's not reversible.

The first item is a tin. This is inspired by "A Court of Thorns and Roses". I don't understand the fascination with ACOTAR, but it's a nice tin. I'm not sure what to use it for though. It looks sort of shortbread sized, maybe.

The next item is a solid perfume. This is a really good idea for an item, but. This solid perfume contains aloe vera, which I'm allergic to. Aloe is one of the most common skin allergies, and it's a completely unnecessary ingredient in perfumes. This is based on "An Enchantment of Ravens".

Next is an annotation kit. This is actually less a "kit" than just a set of sticky tabs. They're cool though, because they're super thin, so as well as being page tabs, they can also be used instead of highlighting. I'm really getting into annotating, so I'll add these to my pencil case! These are inspired by "The Fifth Season".

The last item is a story doorway. This one is inspired by "The Chronicles of Narnia". When this collection was announced, I thought it was going to be amazing, but actually these doorways are really ugly. I thought they'd be more decorative. I'm not going to keep a single one of these, and I really hope this collection finishes soon.

This month's pin is inspired by "Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries".

Saying goodbye to an old friend of this blog: today I discovered a stump where my favorite old sycamore maple used to grow. It wasn’t in perfect health but I always liked seeing it. Let this post be its memorial.

So I've been wanting to share this. I finally drew May in all her Volume outfits. Lets get this started!

This is her V1-3 outfit just simply called "Academia." I used this outfit to show her more calm and quiet feeling. A bit of a loner.

Here we have the V2 alternate outfit known as "Brighter." This was meant to show there was more to May. A much more to her personality.

Next is the Beacon ball outfit. I wanted something fancy but something I know she would be comfortable with.

Then we have V4-6 outfit "Returning Home." This was meant to show off May's homage to the fact she was born in Mistral. I gave her a dash of red again much like her dance outfit has the red shimmer to it.

Finally my all time favorite is V7-8 outfit, aka "Dustslinger." This is much more my style at the time. Also it is the first time May's symbol is on her outfit in an obvious manner.

Do you ever think about how truly amazing it is that God blessed us with seasons and holidays? As we never get bored of a season or during, because there’s always something to look forward to like flowers, hummingbirds, and baby animals in the spring, more wildflowers and fireflies and butterflies in the summer! Then in the Autumn season there’s so much to look forward to, for instance the changing colors of the leaves! All the bright colors and acorns that squirrels chase after and bury. Then there’s all kinds of different scents and baked goods, you walk around and you smell petrichor mingled with pumpkin, cinnamon, apple and cloves! As well as the holidays such as Halloween, all the adorable little trick or treaters with all kinds of different costumes so that someone can be whatever character or creature they choose to be. Then of course there’s Thanksgiving where you get to be with the family you choose and love, surrounded by warm food then cozy up on the couch with blankets and watch “It’s Thanksgiving Charlie Brown.”

Then don’t even get me started on Christmas!!!

Sooo many things, there’s the smells too of course, of gingerbread, chocolates, vanilla sugar cookies! Warm sweaters and holiday outfits! The music is always heartwarming and cheery! Everything always seems a bit softer, the smiles and people. The lights and decorations seem to light up the world and everyone’s happier, kinder. The world seems to pause and remember that magic, and love, exists. The kids are sweeter and more giving as well, they’re looking for Rudolph and his friends along with Santa.

I just find it such a blessing that we have that and I couldn’t even begin to write how much joy that brings me, or even others. It’s just very captivating, almost ethereal in a sense.
