I found Nostradamus (so named because he's always so curious about me, observant of us hoomans in general, and loves to explore his nesting box and now the entire bathroom) in the most uncomfortable-looking position. 🙀 Oof. Me: I'm going to follow my doctor's recommendation of easing back into my normal life and daily activities. I think I will start doing that by taking a leisurely walk. Also me: during said leisurely walk, within HOURS of coming home after a 7-day voluntary inpatient stay for severe depression, I happen upon an extremely dirty, skinny, diarrhea-stricken and dehydrated mother cat and her six tiny 3 week old kittens (+ two others of the same age two years down!), all unwanted, neglected, abandoned in a filthy backyard within reach of a very large dog, so I end up trespassing in order to rescue them and bring them home to safety. 🤍 Did you know that kittens born around this time of year will not survive the winter? It is absolutely imperative that kittens born around this time of year be brought indoors, because the mother cats cannot both provide for their babies AND find shelter for them both during the winter, so what happens is the kittens either die of starvation and/or exposure. PLEASE, keep your eyes and ears out for kittens, and if you find them get them to a rescue, a shelter, or look on Facebook or Craigslist for a foster. If nothing else, do a Good Samaritan surrender at a local vet or emergency clinic. They're out there, so please look! Thank you. Anyway, Mama, who we're calling Zelda, simply needed two doses of anti-diarrheals + the start of a 7-day course of probiotics, and her bowel movements returned to normal. Since Zelda has EIGHT kittens (the two oranges, the solid gray, and the dark brown and black marmalade are males, so we've got five sassy little bitchlets on our hands! 😻) to nourish, not only are we offering them KMR, but we're giving it to her, too, along with high-fat foods. This is my calling. Godspeed, babies. Sometimes Tux Mama isn't in the mood to nurse her four biological 3-weekers, the two 2-weekers she took in, and the two 3-weekers we snuck in. That's when I give her face and toebean rubs to keep her calm, compliant, and lactating. It's a time-consuming process, but you do what you have to do! 🤷‍♀️ (We also top off the babies with KMR, since clearly eight kittens is a lot for one mother cat to produce for!)
